UNTY... FW13/14 Novocaine Collection
With the first breeze of the winter season, UNTY launches the Novocaine Collection; a winter collection featuring designs inspired by the absence of sensation. Drawings, paintings, and graphic work are mixed together to create 5 designs featured on navy blue sweaters of the highest quality. The designs have transitioned into a much more ambiguous concept, rather than masks, these faces are layers of skin covering a mind of thoughts no one can predict or possibly understand. ASK
ASK G for fashion advice, shopping dilemmas, seasonal trends & styling tips & tricks. I’m a classic man who dresses up in a very classic way. I’m 29 and my wife thinks I look 40 due to the way I dress. She said it looks really boring and old age. I’m not into extreme fashion and trends, I like the way I look but I’m also afraid I would look older than my real age… Ahmad I totally understand your wife’s point of view; however, I still understand and believe that classic is what makes you feel comfortable. Please note that classic doesn’t mean outmoded. On the contrary, classic is never out of fashion. Might be a bit boring as she mentioned but we could change that by adding some color, some styles and some prints that you might actually like to introduce to your wardrobe. For instance polo shirts are classic, if they are loose and not fitted they will give a look more boyish than oldish, if worn with denim or shorts will definitely look more trendy than with classic pants and blazer. Try adding T-shirts too, with prints, images and multicolor, shorts, colored shoes, colored jeans, etc, as such you’ll feel and look younger.
I’m a wife and mother of 4 kids. When I’m out with the family, my husband gets upset because I look much younger than him, to the extent that some people even think that I’m one of the children and he’s the father of 5. I hardly wear makeup, mostly pull my hair up and almost always in jeans and a T.shirt. I know I do look young but how can I change my way of dressing as to satisfy my husband? …… ……… …… Nadia Well, that’s an ironic question, cause Nadia, everybody in the world wants to look young, but then you think it’s a problem you want to solve. I think it’s your husband who ought to change. He and you should be proud and grateful that you look young. Don’t ever change your young spirit of dressing. All we can do here is that when you are with him alone in a more formal set up, then you can add more makeup, dress up more elegantly and style your hair in a more modern style. Not advising by any means to look older, of course not, but just dressier, this might make him feel more comfortable around you.
I’m veiled and bored of my veil wraps. I don’t have problems with dressing up, I’m just facing a major problem with the veil itself, buying it and wrapping it…… ….. …..Dina Shopping for scarves, veils, shawls, hats or even bandanas is an easy mission now I believe. Veil could be used within any of the former list. Also veil, non veil, high street, designer, accessory and any kind of store in the entire world must sell at least one of those mentioned items. There are many wraps to try out on different occasions as the regular Islamic veil, the Spanish (uncovering neck and knotted at the back of the head), the Syrian (dangling with a V behind the neck, also uncovering the front neck), the Arabian (loose around the head with a tight bandana underneath), the Indian (wrapped like the Maharajah, neck showing), the Bonbon (bow tie under the neck) and last but not least the lovely back to 20’s fashion the Turban. Play around and create as you wish.

Deana Shaaban... The Woman Behind
the Brand
What is your background in fashion?
I got my Bachelor’s degree from the American University in Cairo in Business Administration with a concentration in Marketing and a minor in Psychology. I then went on to get two certificates in Fashion Design from Istituto Di Moda Burgo and in Pattern Making from Institute Technique de la Mode. The next step; I went to London for a one year intensive diploma course in Fashion design at Istituto Marangoni.
Tell us what fascinates you about fashion.
- Fashion design to me is one of the most beautiful forms of art and the most obvious form of self-expression. I think it’s incredible to see the transformation people go through when trying on a piece of clothing that makes them feel confident and ultimately good about themselves. I think it’s amazing that in a piece of fabric, lays an infinite number of possibilities. Any piece of fabric can be transformed into anything, if you have the right vision. This process never ceases to amaze me.
Tell us about the Deana Shaaban brand.
Currently based in Cairo, Egypt, we design evening and wedding gowns on a per order basis and the Ready-to-Wear line is debuted twice a year. Throughout the year there are several limited edition collections that are also released. Not one design is ever repeated because we believe that not every gown suits every woman, but that every woman is unique in her own right and the gown that adorns her should be true to that belief. When a woman is draped in a dress, the focus should not be on the dress, but rather on the woman. The pieces that a woman wears should give her that majestic glow we all look for.

Beside fashion, what is Deana Shaaban passionate about?
I have a few other passions, of course. Dancing and baking are just a few. I love contemporary dance because I think it’s beautiful that when I’m standing in a class, the only way I can truly be a great dancer is to strip myself away from all of my insecurities and allow my body to move freely. Dancing to me is just as exhilarating as the design process. As for baking, I love baking a basket of muffins with love and seeing the joy on someone’s face when they first lay eyes on them.
What part of your job do you like best, and which part do you like least?
Best part of my job is seeing a collection come to life. I love every part of it; from the research, to the production, to the fashion shows and finally to the satisfaction that my customers experience when wearing one of my designs for the first time. The part I like least has to deal with production mistakes and unnecessary glitches that can happen to any designer during the final stages of designing. It’s all part of the learning process though.
What was the inspiration behind your latest collection?
The inspiration behind my last collection is women. I was searching for female role models that we as Egyptians can look up to, and started coming across some incredible names. I felt an immediate urge to shed the light on these women through my designs. In the collection you will find hints of Women who show us every day what it’s like to stay feminine and dress powerfully at the same time. The collection is an empowering design vision that defines the features of a woman without taking away from her core.
Where can our readers find the collection?
We are available at Theodor’s in Maadi, Asfour El Nil in Zamalek, Veevaame and Deana Shaaban studio both in Attameya. Our website is www.deanashaaban.com

Awards Season 2013 (part 5)
Best &Worst Dressed Editor’s Pick By Mahamad El Haddad
American Music Awards
BEST
Rihanna in Jean-Paul Gaultier. There are some looks that not anyone can pull off and here’s a classic example; RiRi looking spectacular in this two-piece avant garde number.
WORST
Katy Perry in Oscar De La Renta, and Olympia Le -Tan clutch. Polka dot garden of heaven… and the dictionary book clutch is totally and absolutely adorable!
Emma Roberts in Lanvin dress, Casadei shoes, and RODO clutch. Ill fitting foil monstrosity… Was she going for metallic trash bag chic?
Kids Choice Awards
BEST WORST
CFR 8
Jessica Alba in Mary Katrantzou, Christian Louboutin shoes, and Stella McCartney clutch. Looking oh so fresh in a print A line frock. Perfect dress for the perfect event!
Ke$ha in… who knows what! Paying an homage to Dumb & Dumber in blue suit/costume, all what was missing was a white rabbit and we guess a two drink minimum?
Heidi Klum in Marchesa gown + clutch, and Brian Atwood shoes. Guess who’s dress was caught in a paper shredder?! You should know better “Miz Project Runway”
MTV Movie Awards
BEST WORST Holland Roden in Donna Karan, Ruthie Davis shoes and Amanda Pearl clutch. The Teen Wolf star looking sophisticated and elegant while channeling old hollywood glamour.
Ke$ha in Gypsy Junkies pants. If you would just put an ounce of the effort you spend trying to look ridiculous… well we guess we’ll never know!
MTV Video Music Awards
BEST
Holland Roden in Naeem Khan and Rupert Sanderson heels. It is refreshing when someone takes a risk on the red carpet and it totally pays off… isn’t that what fashion is all about?
WORST
Lady Gaga in Prabal Gurung. Okay yes the dress is not the prettiest dress of all but for Gaga to look THAT normal and chic; this definitely had to make it to the best dressed list!
Miley Cyrus in Dolce & Gabbana. Looking cheap as ever in a twopiece plastic fantastic outfit… and really whats with the tongue stunt?! Do us all a favor and put it away please!
Katy Perry in Emanuel Ungaro. Looking absolutely tacky in a leopard heavily embellished dress. Okay okay we get it; you have a hit song called Roar, get over yourself already!
Teen Choice Awards
BEST WORST Katie Cassidy in Zuhair Murad and Christian Louboutin shoes. The Arrow star looks delish in this hot pink lace number… eye candy indeed!
Miley Cyrus in Saint Laurent. What’s with the bat inspired outfit?! Honey wake up it is NOT Halloween. Well at least she put that horrid tongue of her away!
