God's guidance is evident in changes following discernment

With the completion of last week’s session of the Texas Annual Conference, John Stephens officially completed his first year as our senior pastor. After his fast-paced first year, which included over 70 neighborhood chats, John is taking some well-deserved time away from the pulpit this summer. Part of this time away involves leading a trip to Italy. Our summer Sanctuary preachers will include Josef Klam, Gregg Taylor (preaching his last sermon as a Chapelwood pastor), Melissa Maher (our new pastor at Mercy Street), Wick Stuckey, Andy Cunningham, and me. Also, I’m excited to share that Rev. Tammy Heinrich, who will be appointed to Chapelwood effective July 1, will preach her debut sermon on July 26. Tammy, who currently serves at Terrace UMC, was recently commissioned as a provisional elder by Bishop Janice Huie. She will be joining our Adult Discipleship team and also doing pastoral care.

Our Ministry Council recently held a very important meeting I’d like to tell you about. Back at our March 7 Leadership Summit, we appointed six ad-hoc strategic working groups consisting of members and staff to work on specific projects that emerged from the neighborhood chats. These include such things as expanding our worship opportunities, in a way to reach young adults, enhancing our Spring Branch serving strategy, dealing with facilities issues such as inadequate parking, seeking tighter alignment and expansion of our School for Young Children, and focusing our discipleship pathway. These ad-hoc groups have been hard at work since March and they all gave updates at the recent Ministry Council meeting. They are all dreaming very creatively and making great progress. They have been asked to make a final report to the Ministry Council at its August meeting. The Ministry Council will then be tasked with developing our strategic ministry action plan (MAP) going forward, so stay tuned! Summer is a time when many of us travel and have an opportunity to visit other churches. I’d love for you to share with me the worship bulletins of the services you attend. It’s a great way for us to learn. I hope to see you this weekend.

On Thursday, June 4, the Piney Point City Council met to hear discussion and vote on the Special Use Permit under consideration that would allow Chapelwood to proceed with the plans for the Memorial Chapel and Columbarium. After hearing passionate but respectful discussion on both sides of the issue, Council voted in favor of approving the permit.

Dream Today...Create Tomorrow

Over 40 seniors gathered to celebrate their upcoming graduations from high school on Sunday, May 17. They led worship in the Sanctuary services and attended the 11:10 a.m. baccalaureate service where they heard a message from John Stephens. After the services, they were able to celebrate with friends and family at a luncheon in the Fellowship Hall. The luncheon was planned and hosted by the junior class with the theme “Dream Today…Create Tomorrow.” The Fellowship Hall was full with over 250 people in attendance! Seniors were honored with gifts and Josef Klam gave a meaningful message to the seniors, leaving them with advice for their roads ahead. Stephanie Dickinson, parent of a college student, talked to

the parents, encouraging them on their journey yet to come. Senior Molly Balderach thanked all those who helped them along the way, including youth staff and volunteers, parents, friends, and the junior class, who hosted the event. 1 Timothy 4:12 was the theme verse for the senior class: “Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young, but be an example for the believers in your speech, your conduct, your love, faith, and purity.” The seniors will take this verse with them as they step into a new adventure, creating the tomorrow of their dreams. Best of luck and congratulations to all seniors!

Listen to these ancient women in Scripture and allow them to call to your heart and intrigue your mind with their voices and stories. Tuesday, February 2, 5:30 p.m., Parlor Good God, Lousy World, and Me: The Improbable Journey of a Human Rights Activist from Unbelief to Faith by Holly Burkhalter, 183 pages Holly Burkhalter was born into a devout Christian family whose grandparents were Mennonite missionaries in India. At the age of 16, her grandfather died, and her faith was shattered. She began her work with international human rights in the 80s writing for the Washington Post, and for 40 years came face to face with atrocities that call into question both the existence of God and whether there is any “human” left in humanity. This is a blunt, challenging, laugh-out-loud, and deeply personal account of a journey from unbelief to the work of justice in the name of God. Personal spiritual questioning and plunging the depths of our faith is allowed.

UMW AUGUST BOOK STUDY CREATED FOR HAPPINESS

Chapelwood’s UMW will host a study of the book Created for Happiness: Understanding Your Life in God this August. The study is being held in four parts on Tuesdays in the Fellowship Hall beginning August 4. Gather at 11:30 a.m. to sign in, get your lunch, and visit a bit. The study itself runs from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. Registration is recommended and appreciated so that seating and food can be planned. Register at www.chapelwood. org/auguststudy. Lunch is optional, and costs $10. The book is available in the Chapelwood Bookstore for $12 for those who wish to read the book prior to the study, and the nursery is available upon request by emailing nursery@chapelwood.org. The pursuit of happiness is something our society is obsessed with and our faith warns against. But understanding our life in God and finding true, life-giving happiness isn’t as easy as it appears. Even if it is easy to understand, it seems almost impossible to live out. And what does our Methodist heritage say about happiness? In our current fast-paced condition, it almost seems lofty to even stop and consider the word happiness. Yet, if we don’t, will we ever discover it? This August, we invite you to consider not just your state of happiness but the world’s. Each Tuesday we will pursue the idea, the culture, the societal and Biblical definitions of happiness, and the Methodist theology and practices of happiness. Chapelwood members Scott Adams and Amy Vogel will take turns leading our discussion Scott Adams, a founding faculty member and current Principal of Gateway Academy, graduated from Baylor University in 1986 with a double major in English and Communication Studies. He taught for a short time and then entered the financial world. In 2004, Scott accepted a position to teach at The Joy School; a career decision driven by his desire to return to education and his

10

understanding of the challenges of having a learning disabled child. His experience at The Joy School offered a launching pad to accept his current role at Gateway Academy. Scott is an awardwinning speaker of Toastmaster’s International and one of the top 18 speakers in the organization. He is a longtime member of Chapelwood, worships in the Sanctuary at 8:25 a.m., and spends much of his time teaching Sunday School to both teens and adults on just about any subject asked. Scott and his wife Kim recently celebrated 23 years of marriage and are amazed daily by their two beautiful children, Spence and Annie. Amy Vogel is a writer and mommy to three beautiful girls. She is a bIogger and has been writing on jesusbling. blogspot.com since 2008, where she posts a daily devotional. Since the age of fourteen, Amy has been discovering Jesus while going through the ups and downs of life. She’s been writing about it since she rededicated herself in her 30s. Today, she is trying to explore every way to use the gifts the Lord has given her. That, of course, includes the passion for writing about His Word for the betterment of the people of faith. Ministering to those with cancer became a part of her story in 2010 when her middle daughter, Sophia, was diagnosed with cancer. Sophia was healed in 2011, but she continues to meet the needs of cancer patients and their families as part of her mission. “I'm always working on several projects and enjoy the opportunity to speak to encourage others to go deep in their faith.” Sometimes that is in the United States and other times it’s overseas, following husband David's career. She is a member of the Upper Room at Chapelwood. In addition to the discussion, on August 25 UMW will collect school supplies for UMCOR missions. SEW SOCIABLE’S SUMMER PROJECT

Tuesdays in July, 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 noon, W202 Come join the United Methodist Women as we work on completing various projects for ministries and charities impacting children and women. The main focus is making Linus quilts and blankets given to children in Houston area hospitals. Other work in process is making isolet covers for premature babies in Memorial Hermann Children’s Hospital; book bags for UMCOR and Wesley Community Center; costumes and craft items for Chapelwood children; pillowcases for Small Steps; walker pockets for the Chapelwood Gathering Place, and other handmade items given to charitable organizations. Sewing skills are useful, but not required. Please plan to attend some if not all of these sessions. While we spend time together, we have fun creating and completing our projects. Got Kids?

Chapelwood’s Parenting Ministry’s got something you need

Is there a parent anywhere who hasn’t at some time wondered if his bright, beautiful, most-intelligent-offspring-ever-in-thewhole-wide-world child has gone completely off the rails? Or is there a parent who hasn’t wondered just what, exactly, is “normal” for this new alien creature called “middle-schooler” living in her house? Or wondered how and what (and when) to talk with a child about sex? How to raise children with a strong faith and love for God? Or just wanted a few hints about what’s to come, and tips on how to make some predictable milestones easier? Of course not – and don’t let that “perfect” parent over there in the corner fool you. Parenting is both the hardest and most rewarding job you’ll ever have, and there’s not a parent anywhere who doesn’t want to do the very best job possible. Chapelwood gets it – and is planning a full range of programs to guide and inform parents for the 2015-2016 school year. Here are some of the offerings: • A series of Brown Bag lunches covering these topics: Brain health Tweens, teens, and technology Preparing for Middle School Preparing for High School Preparing for College • Pathway to Purity (for parents of 4th – 6th graders) • Father/Daughter Dance • Purity Event for 7th – 12th graders and their parents • Community-wide event featuring Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton and his dad, Greg Dalton • A wide range of Sunday morning opportunities including Common Ground worship, Confirmation family lessons, “Keep Your Love On” and “Loving our Kids on Purpose” (Danny Silk), Family 101, and “Single and Parenting” classes The events take a number of different forms. Some are DVD- and discussion-based, some are speakers, some are small groups. The “Brown Bag” events usually have 20-30 attendees, while the large events see as many as 150 people. Donna Jackson, wife to David and parent to 13-year-old Will and 11-year-old Elizabeth, has attended a lot of the Parenting Ministry events over the past few years. She says, “Whatever

they offer, if I’m available, I go. It’s all good information.” Parenting events are not just for families in crisis – although they can be lifesavers for those families. Donna agrees. “In today’s world, with all the things that they’re having to deal with (they have a lot more stresses to deal with at their age than we had), I like to learn as much as possible about how to help them get through this phase.” The Parenting Ministry is headed by Linda Withers, long-time Chapelwood member and mother of three grown sons. Under her leadership, the ministry has expanded to meet the varying needs of parents – from the specifics of what to expect during certain life stages to the broader issues surrounding how to develop and inspire a Christ-centered family. All ministry events support the goal of the Parenting Ministry, stated as follows: To help you fulfill your God-ordained role by encouraging, empowering and equipping you to disciple your children, to impress the things of God upon the hearts and minds of this generation, and to view parenting the way God intended. How is this done? By empowering parents; offering opportunities for worship, serving, growth, and play together; providing resources for families in crisis; working with the marriage ministry; fostering family small groups; and raising the church community’s awareness of the importance of children and teens in our church family. Sometimes what a parent takes away from an event is a new idea or perspective, but sometimes simple confirmation that “You’re on the right track” and not alone can be the most welcome of messages. “It helps to hear that some of the things we are doing are good and that we are headed in the right direction,” said Donna. “When Will was a pre-teen I decided that the more I knew, the better.” If you’re interested in finding out more about the amazing wealth of resources available to you as a parent, check out www.chapelwoodparents.org. CALLING ALL ENGAGED COUPLES PREMARITAL SEMINAR COMING UP! Saturday, August 29 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Chapelwood is hosting the Prepare/Enrich Premarital Seminar for couples planning to be married. The seminar is conducted by Kaisi Cunningham, who has her Master of Divinity and Master of Counseling degrees from Asbury Seminary, in addition to over twelve years of conducting the Prepare/Enrich seminar series and six years of pastoral counseling. Kaisi’s experience is a real blessing to couples starting off in life, and Chapelwood is fortunate to be able to share her skills with engaged couples. “Marriage is hard. Marriage is challenging. It doesn’t just come naturally all the time. And so we really do an injustice to couples if we don’t prepare them,” she said. The seminar is open to Chapelwood couples, as well as couples who are planning to be married in other churches. “Some smaller churches don’t have the staffing to do quality premarital work with their couples. This gives them a way to do that very inexpensively,” said Kaisi. The program is free for all couples being married at Chapelwood, and costs just $85 per couple for couples being married elsewhere. That’s a value that you won’t find anywhere else, given the quality of the Prepare/Enrich program. The feedback from couples who have taken the seminar says a lot. One couple had attended another nearby church’s premarital seminar before they attended the session Chapelwood hosted last spring. That couple liked Chapelwood’s program especially because of the time built in to the day for couples to talk and discuss what they’re learning. Different topics are presented throughout the day. “We have all these different topic areas, from communication, conflict resolution, personal style and habits, finances, sex and intimacy, family and friends, and a few more,” said Kaisi. “We do a family map, where you see what you grew up with and what your future spouse grew up with, and you see how your expectations and their expectations might affect holidays, or life in general.” Participants complete a 45-minute comprehensive assessment, including a personality profile, at their leisure about a week before the seminar. They are given their results and discuss those questions that Saturday: why they answered the way they did, how they feel about different topics, and more. “It causes them to talk about some things they never would have talked about until they were in the throes of a problem,” said Kaisi. “It’s pre-communicating instead of reactive communicating.” According to Kaisi, communication is key to a good relationship, but at the same time it’s something that most people don’t know how to do well. “For example, how many times do we have conversations with people and instead of listen to what they’re saying, we’re formulating our answer in

our mind? We miss half of what they’re saying, we’ve already decided what they were going to finish saying, and now we’re going to answer.” Active listening is taught as part of the seminar. The first step is to repeat back what was heard, and interestingly enough, often it’s not at all what was said. Kaisi also teaches conflict resolution skills - so that even if the couple is one of those fortunate types with no problems yet, they learn the skills that they’ll eventually need. The class is set up to be completed on one Saturday. It’s a full day, but it moves quickly because there are a lot of opportunities for couples to discuss each topic. Nothing personal is shared with anyone outside the couple’s own relationship, and lunch is included. Each couple leaves the seminar with a new understanding of what’s important to the other person, along with a very thick workbook with all the information presented in the seminar, including their profile printouts and assessments of every area, so they have a wealth of information to be able to refer to weeks, months, or even years later. Do you… …like people? …show up on Sunday most of the time? …want that warm fuzzy feeling that you get from helping others? We’ve got just the thing. We need a few good people for what’s probably one of the quickest, most pleasant, and most important volunteer jobs around – greeting our new members on the day they join the church, and getting a little bit of information from them. The job (although calling it a job really makes it sound too much like work) is to meet our new members immediately after the worship service while they’re shaking hands with everyone, walk with them to the library, take a quick family snapshot, and have them fill out an information card. The whole process might take about 15 minutes, but it could go longer, depending on how much fun you have chatting with Chapelwood’s newest members. This is one of those times that a very small and simple effort can make a big difference. If you’re interested in helping, contact Ginny Itz, gitz@chapelwood.org, and let her know which Sanctuary service you most often attend. She will get you plugged in.

SINGING IN THE SUMMERTIME

It’s summer – and a wonderful time to sing with the Chancel Choir. We will sing easy songs, we don’t wear robes, and there are no auditions. You don’t even have to be able to read music. The only requirement is that you love to sing. Just show up on a Wednesday evening a little before 7:00 p.m. upstairs in the Choir Room. There will be someone there to greet you, get you the music you will need, and seat you with a group of folks of the same vocal part. Rehearsals last about an hour and a half. On Sunday morning, come a little before 10:30 to the Choir Room where we warm up and rehearse whatever we will be singing that morning. We are a fun loving, caring group of people who take seriously our part in the 11:10 a.m. worship service. Consider joining us – we will be very happy to see you. MERCY STREET MOBILE BRINGS HOPE TO MANY

Join other volunteers to bring church and a meal to the homeless of Houston. Meet at 6:15 p.m. on July 10 in Chapelwood's Youth Building lobby to ride the van or carpool. If driving directly to this event, please arrive at 2715 St. Charles by 7:00 p.m. Dress is very casual – jeans and T-shirts are fine. WHERE IN THE WORLD? UPDATE FROM GLOBAL/ NATIONAL MISSIONS

In April, an earthquake hit Nepal, killing more than 8,000 people and injuring an estimated 19,000. The earthquake triggered several avalanches, including one on Mt. Everest that killed at least 19 people, and several aftershocks that took the lives of nearly 200 more. In response to this disaster, Chapelwood designated the May communion offering for disaster relief efforts in Nepal. Thanks to the generosity of our congregation, over $7,500 was raised. These funds were doubled from Global/National Mission funds and a total of $15,000 was sent to UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) designated specifically for Nepal on behalf of the Chapelwood congregation. UMCOR raises funds for their administration costs separately, so 100% of the proceeds donated to the Nepal relief effort will go directly to support efforts there. Additional Global/National funding was sent to two other organizations that are assisting in Nepal. Mountain Child has delivered supplies by helicopter to over 8,000 individuals in remote areas of Nepal that have been cut off since the earthquake. Free Wheelchair Mission has committed to sending three containers of wheelchairs to those affected by the earthquake. We continue to be in prayer for the people in Nepal and all who are affected by the earthquake, including first responders and the families of those who have died or are missing. Thank you, Chapelwood, for the impact you are having here in Houston, across the United States, and throughout the world!


THE KENYA MISSION 2015 THIS YEAR WE ALL GET TO JOIN THE TEAM!

We had a fabulous mission to Maua, Kenya, in 2014! A house was built for Mary and her four children, we had a de-worming clinic for over 1,200 Primary and Secondary school children, and we sponsored a remote medical clinic where over 400 people saw a Physician’s Assistant and received necessary medications. We were able to visit the ZOE family that Chapelwood sponsors and took 19 bags of supplies and medical equipment to the Maua Methodist Hospital (MMH)! Whew!! In early 2015 plans began for what we hoped would be an equally successful mission for this year. However, because of the growing security concerns in Kenya, the difficult decision was made in early May to not travel to Maua in 2015. Rather than abandoning our partnership with the people at MMH and the surrounding areas, our team has chosen to deepen our mission partnership with MMH by planning a virtual mission to Maua. We are hard at work creating a mission that all of Chapelwood’s members can join. As with any mission, we need to raise funds. We also need extra-powerful prayers for its success, and willing hands to create a Kenya event so that everyone will understand the needs of the Maua Methodist Hospital a little better. Plus, we need to sow the seeds for an even more successful mission in 2016! This virtual team will sponsor a campaign to get Chapelwood members to stand with Kenya, reminding our brothers and sisters in Kenya that we are with them even if we are not there physically. We want to bridge the distance through prayer. The virtual team will send money to the organizations that would have served our team if we were in Kenya, including the Maua Basin Hotel, where our team would have stayed, and the drivers of the Transportation Company who would have driven our team while we were there. This will reduce the economic impact of our team not physically traveling to Kenya. We will also send money directly to the Maua Methodist Hospital in support of both special projects at the hospital (a new van for transporting patients, two new industrialsized washing machines, and more) and the hospital’s Emergency Service Fund, which assists the patients and their families who cannot pay their hospital bills.

Maua Methodist Hospital was founded in 1924 by the British Methodist Church. It now has about 250 beds with 21 physicians working at the hospital. MMH serves over one million people in its immediate area. MMH also has a nursing school on the compound, which provides for the training of a large number of the nurses needed in Kenya. The relationship between Chapelwood and Maua Methodist Hospital started in 1999 with the departure of Chapelwood’s first mission team to Maua, Kenya. While Chapelwood has not sent a team every year, we have supported our partners in Maua every year. Jerry and Bill Savuto were the Resident Missionaries at Maua Methodist Hospital at that time. They have come to Chapelwood many times visiting friends here who have been to Maua on a mission pilgrimage. When Jerry and Bill returned to the USA, Jim Monroe and Sue Owen took their place as the Resident Missionaries in Maua. One of the questions asked of each mission team member is, “After your mission experience, how is God calling you to be in mission at home?” This year, we all find ourselves “at home.” So the question now becomes, “How can we partner with, and encourage, the people at Maua Methodist Hospital?” You can help us send the love of God to the people of MMH by praying for: • peace and reconciliation in the country of Kenya, • success for the new CEO at the Hospital, • safe travels for Jim and Sue as they end their time at the hospital and return to the USA, • understanding on the part of the Hospital staff that this was not the year for our team to travel to Maua, and • success for the hospital as it continues to be the servant to over a million persons who need help. Please watch for the notices about Kenya. We, the Kenya 2015 Team, wish to get each and every Chapelwood member involved in our virtual mission. We will be offering some educational information, a variety of opportunities for involvement, and a method that allows financial support of the Maua Methodist Hospital. Also, please mark your calendars for Sunday, July 26, when we hope to have a special lunch and activities after church to support these efforts.

We were blessed with over 300 people in attendance! We are very grateful for the dedicated dinner committee that planned a very special night. The KIPP SHARP Singers, directed by Laura Taylor, sang beautifully and provided inspirational entertainment for the audience. Martha Macris, Executive Director of MAM, delivered an uplifting message about the Spring Branch community and how we can continue to provide a hand up to our neighbors in need. We give our special thanks to all the Chapelwood members who volunteered at the event, including those involved with decorations, check-in, and the meal preparation and service. It was a wonderful night to celebrate the many ways that God is working through the Foundation to bless others.

Sponsor a Child through MAM’s 2015 Back to School Drive

New school uniforms are a financial burden for many families in Northwest Houston. Please consider helping send these kids back to school by donating to Memorial Assistance Ministries’ annual Back to School campaign. The suggested donation per child is $50, which can supply school clothing and shoes for one student. You may donate any amount and 100% of the donations received will be used to purchase school clothing and supplies. Please take this opportunity to help a child start the school year off on the right foot! A table will be set up Sunday mornings in the Fountain Hallway on August 2, 9, and 16. If you prefer, online donations may be made by selecting “Gifts and Donations” at www.chapelwood.org, or checks can be mailed to the church.
