Chapelwood’s Mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world by embodying God’s grace as we receive it to those who need it. The Chapelwood family is a service-focused body of believers who welcome all to experience God’s grace and goodness through Christian community.

While we are determined to “take church” to those who do not belong to a local church family, we also delight in serving those individuals and families within our church. We provide ongoing faith-building activities and meaningful fellowship opportunities for men, women, youth, and children.

BE BORN IN US TODAY

JOHN STEPHENS SENIOR PASTOR

In Isaiah 11:1-10, the image of the wolf lying down with the lamb is a declaration that seems unreal and absurd. We often hear of the “lion laying down with the lamb," but in Isaiah it reads, “The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them The cow and the bear shall graze, their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder’s den. They will not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain; for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.” These images seem far-fetched and impossible in our world, especially in light of the terror and brutality we see around us. We are all acquainted with fear, injustice, and violence but that doesn’t mean we like it. There is a lot of anxiety around us because the things going on in the world seem to have power over our circumstances. What can we do to make a difference? When we feel powerless, we grow hopeless. That leads us to become negative. Christmas calls us to a better way of dealing with the brokenness of the world. As we enter another Christmas season, where can we find new life? Where can we find a new, green sprig growing out of a stump

4

(to use Isaiah 11 language)? In the places where we feel cut off, where can something new be born? What area of your life needs new promise? The message of Advent and Christmas is a promise not just of a future hope, but also of a present hope. Isaiah proclaims the coming reign of God in the presence of Christ, and Christ brings new beginnings…even in the midst of uncertainty and fear. The good news of Christmas is that Christ brings power for those who are weak and afraid. His birth didn’t just bring hope 2,000 years ago…it brings hope every moment of every day. This is why we celebrate Christmas every year and focus on Christ’s coming again and again. It all starts with us. We must admit the places where we are afraid. We must admit the places where we feel weak. We must admit the places and times when we are aggressive and negative. Advent is a good time to engage in personal examination of our assumptions about life, the world, and our place in it. What can we do so that the “wolf” and the “lamb” in our lives can actually lie down together? What can we do to help Jesus make a peaceable kingdom in our sphere of influence? This Advent, there are many ways you can be transformed in your faith and grow the peaceable kingdom of God. I hope that you will check out the ways to Experience God’s grace in worship, Grow in God’s grace through study, and Share God’s grace in mission and ministry. I am especially excited about our sermon series, “Be Born in Us Today” which will be preached across all our communities. We will examine where we find ourselves in each of the characters of Christmas. This examination will help us admit the places of fear, joy, and uncertainty in our lives. Check out the Chimes and the website to find out more. I am so excited to share this holiday season with you! I hope you will be present and participate as much as you can. It will make all the difference for you this Christmas. I love you, Merry Christmas,

John

EXPERIENCE GRACE IN WORSHIP

BE BORN IN US TODAY AN ADVENT SERIES

ADVENT SERMON SERIES

November 27 – December 25, All Worship Communities This Advent series leans into a new way of prayer. It invites us not to find ourselves in the story as much as to allow the story to find its place within us . . . to allow the persons and elements of the birth narrative of Jesus to be present within us, to understand that this story of Jesus’ birth is also a story in which we participate. In short, the many elements, characters, and images of the birth narratives in Matthew and Luke all live within us. They all represent parts of what it means for each of us to be fully human. These stories, and the persons who shape these stories, are not fanciful creations to be studied or sung about from afar; rather, they speak to our own interior connection with God. And each of them illumines a different aspect of what it means for you and me to live out our own fullness, to be fully human, fully the persons God created us to be.

LAS POSADAS

THE MANY MOODS OF CHRISTMAS

Sunday, December 4, 5:00 p.m., Sanctuary The second concert in the "A Musical Christmas at Chapelwood" series features Robert Shaw's timeless classic, The Many Moods of Christmas, a sweeping arrangement of Christmas carols from around the globe. The Chancel Choir will bring this musical treasure to life with organist Cameron Cody and a 21-piece orchestra under the direction of Chapelwood Director of Worship and Music Ministries Dr. Craig Gilbert. Additionally, the evening will feature congregational singing, multiple soloists, small ensembles, and the Chancel Bells under the direction of Diana Montgomery. This musical experience will surround you with joy, reverence, and praise as we join our voices together to celebrate the spirit of Christmas. There is no cost to attend. For more information, see www.chapelwood.org/moods, or contact Dani Wojcik, dwojcik@chapelwood.org.

From 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. we will celebrate Las Posadas at The Branch. The purpose of a Watch Night service is to bring the community together to give God thanks for His mercy and grace, and to prepare for a new beginning by laying aside the weights and entanglements of the previous year. As the clock counts down to midnight, we will kneel and pray our way into the New Year. Join us for a New Year’s Eve party alternative (or perhaps a party prelude) filled with live music, snacks, cider, and celebration! Light refreshments will be served from 10:00 - 10:30 p.m. For more information visit www.urhouston.org or contact Genesis Mitchell, gmitchell@chapelwood.org.

EXPERIENCE GRACE IN WORSHIP

Loss comes to us in many forms: loss of life, relationships, jobs, and security. Loss can lead us to doubt, loneliness, and even despair. As we are surrounded by constant proclamations of joy during the Christmas season, our grief and doubts can come into jarring contact with the surrounding culture. However, the Word tells us that as we gather in worship, we are surrounded by God’s love and God’s people. The Service of the Longest Night is a spiritual reminder that we do not carry these burdens alone. If the idea of a quieter, more reflective Christmas service this year meets your spiritual and emotional needs, you are invited to gather in prayer, music, remembrance, and Holy Communion as the Spirit of God ministers to us all.

LOVE & RESPECT DATE NIGHTS!) BOOKED FOR LUNCH – JUST MERCY (FIVE Sunday evenings, January 29 – March 5 (excluding February 5 Tuesday, January 10, 12:00 – 1:00 p.m., Fireside Room Just Mercy, by Bryan Stevenson, is a true and unforgettable story about the redeeming potential of mercy. Bryan Stevenson was a gifted young attorney when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending the poor, the wrongly condemned, and those trapped in the furthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillan, a young man sentenced to die for a notorious murder he didn’t commit. The case drew Stevenson into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship, and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever. Our facilitator is Rev. Carrie Leader, an ordained deacon in the United Methodist Church appointed as Volunteer Coordinator for Revision, the ministry Chapelwood partners with to provide mentors for children in the prison system or in bad situations at home that put them at high risk. Don’t forget to bring a brown bag lunch; we have a lot to chew on in January! Copies of the book are available in the Chapelwood Bookstore. Husbands and wives will learn to better understand their partners, what is important to them, and the best form of delivery in communication resulting in improved understanding, empathy and respect. There is no group work involved at any stage of the course. The course is designed for any married couple who wants to work together and invest in their relationship. It does not matter if a couple has been married for less than a year or more than thirty. If, on the other hand, your marriage is experiencing challenges, the course will provide you with some practical tools to help you work through difficult issues. The cost is $175 per couple, which includes all materials and five dinners. To reserve childcare for children three months through kindergarten, e-mail nursery@chapelwood.org by January 20. OPEN HEARTS – A NEW SUPPORT GROUP AT CHAPELWOOD

Chapelwood has begun Open Hearts, a ministry to parents, family, and friends of gays, lesbians, bisexual, and transgender persons. We have had a long tradition of reaching out to those who need support, and we feel a special calling as a congregation to minister to this group that often has been neglected. Cynthia and Judd Oualline could have benefitted from a group like Open Hearts. Here is Cynthia's story. Judd and I would have benefited so much from a group like Open Hearts. We thought Judd, Jr. might be gay, but we did not know. We didn't talk about it. We in many ways denied it. We needed to know we were not alone. We needed an affirming place among our Christian friends. We needed a confidential environment. We needed to talk about what seemed to us at that time a great loss. We needed to discuss our feelings of pain, anger, blame, guilt, fear, and doubt. Parents need their Christian community to stand by them and with

10

them. Today that is available in a loving group called Open Hearts. This is where we could have begun our journey of reconciling Judd’s “coming out.” But premature deaths prevented this from happening. Our son Judd Oualline, Jr. died several years ago from cancer. His dad, Judd Oualline, Sr., passed away from cancer two years before Judd, Jr. We never had the chance to be in a wonderful group such as this one.” Dr. Kelly Williams gave us the best advice of all. It was “Never let love leave your family.” My advice is that Open Hearts is one of the best ways to never let love leave your family. Cynthia Oualline When a loved one's homosexuality is first disclosed, family and friends deal with a variety of emotions and reactions. Relationships may be strained, hopes and dreams must be reevaluated, and feelings of isolation may set in. Many people are not able to share their situation with others and therefore suffer in silence. They also may not feel free to seek assistance from their own church. To help break this silence and isolation and to give members of our community a safe, confidential place to share their experience, Chapelwood is sponsoring a support group for family members and friends of LGTB. We offer a safe and affirming setting for those who desire understanding, education, and support. Meetings include a time of sharing and may also include speakers or video presentations. Meetings are on the first Thursday of every month, from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. in YB100. Upcoming meetings are the following Thursdays: November 3, December 1, January 5, February 2, March 2, April 6, and May 4. SHARE GRACE IN MINISTRY A SHARK TANK WITHOUT THE BITE

The tenth annual Newspring/HCC Business Plan Competition is coming up in the New Year. Newspring, a ministry partner with Chapelwood, sponsors this competition for both startup and existing businesses. Beginning in February 2017, approximately 25 teams will begin the journey to create the business of their dreams. In conjunction with HCC’s Spring Branch campus, Newspring provides five comprehensive training classes on business planning. What makes the competition unique is that Newspring also provides each contestant team with two advisers who mentor them, encourage them, and generally walk with them during the ten weeks of the competition. Business ideas have ranged from day care to light manufacturing, financial services, sports, retail, and high tech. Advisers, who are limited to no more than four hours per month, are matched to the industry of their contestant team. The competition was recently featured on KHOU Channel 11. You can view the story on their website at www.khou.com. Newspring needs volunteers for the 2017 adviser teams. This is a unique opportunity for Christian witness using your business skills. For more information, contact Robert Westheimer at rwestheimer1@comcast.net.

SHARE GRACE IN MINISTRY THE ALTERNATIVE CHRISTMAS MARKET

November 27 – December 18, 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Fountain Hallway The Alternative Christmas Market is an opportunity to give to ministries and organizations that serve those in need. Since its beginning many years ago, the Alternative Christmas Market has provided our church with a way to give a holiday gift to a loved one that embodies the true spirit of Christmas. By giving a donation to one of these organizations you are giving the gift of hope, restoration, and transformation. Each of the 25 local and global ministries selected are ones that our church has an existing partnership with or is a favorite organization that Chapelwood members have participated with over the years. Pick up a booklet in the Fountain Hallway during Advent to find descriptions of the participating organizations along with how your donation will be used. Once you make your selections and donation, you will receive an enclosure card and envelope that describes the ministry to the recipient. Cards are available in the Fountain Hallway each Sunday during Advent. Cash, check, or credit card payments are accepted. You may also make donations online and pick up your cards in the Fountain Hallway or throughout the week at the church offices. Give and make a difference in the lives of those in need. Give as a way to honor a family member or friend. Give as a way to bring the Good News of Jesus to many this Christmas. For more information, please visit www.chapelwood.org/alternative.

FAIR TRADE COFFEE AND CHOCOLATE!

Items are on sale outside of the Fellowship Hall from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. the second Sunday of every month. Purchasing fairly traded products allows farmers to earn a fair price for their crops while delivering quality products to consumers. In addition, fair trade prohibits the use of child labor and encourages the adoption of safer, chemical-free farming methods. Contact Vicki Jud at vicki.jud@sbcglobal.net if you would like to volunteer at the Fair Trade table. For more information, please visit www.chapelwood.org/fairtrade.

GO GLOBAL FROM THE CHURCH

Partner in prayer with a member of the Tapachula mission team from January 17 - 24, 2017. Almost every year, members of Chapelwood team up to go to Tapachula, Mexico, to provide relief for house parents of children whose parents are in prison. Parents who are sent to prison in Mexico have to take their children with them, thus preventing the children from attending school and putting their children in a difficult environment. Mission on the Move, a ministry founded by a United Methodist pastor in Georgia, established homes for these children to teach them and their families the love of Christ and to instill in them values essential to living humane and productive lives. House parents live your-round with the children. Our team will cook, clean, launder, do crafts, and lead in devotions throughout this week so these house parents can have some much-needed time off. We would like each team member to be covered in prayer. Team members are: Stephanie Hill, Team Leader; Susan Hall, Staff Leader; Flory Camacho; Early Denison; Noël Denison; Karen Firenza; Cynthia Lindsey; Carmen Mendez; and Bob Pitaro. If you are drawn to go global as a prayer partner, we ask you to pray for your individual team member throughout the week and write prayer cards for them to read while they are on the trip. Please contact Noël Denison, noel-denison@att.net, if you are interested, and she will provide more details.

FROM ONE VETERAN TO ALL OTHERS WHO LIVED AND DIED.

Recently I wrote some of you about my trying to make a difference in the struggle that our veterans have today. Good news! Because of your generosity great things have happened. A home was saved and is secure. Another home was bought with your help, and on a recent Wednesday I was invited to eat with another young veteran in his small but beautiful home. A few have finally gotten appointments and counseling at the Veterans’ Hospital. During Veterans week I saw or called many family members who lost a loved one in death on the battlefield. One such man is Tom Brandino of the church whose father, a U. S. Marine, died about 200 yards from me in the battle of Okinawa. Tom never got to see his father because he was born while his dad was away at war. I have cried and loved with those who still grieve. Don’t miss your chance to do something special with a veteran. Thank you and bless you.

CHAPELWOOD FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM HONORS COLLEGIATE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS AT PATH WITH A PURPOSE LUNCHEON

by Trisha Mohle The Chapelwood Foundation held its biannual “Path With a Purpose” scholarship luncheon on October 18 to honor recent collegiate grant recipients and to build awareness of this transformative community outreach program. The Foundation’s Scholarship Program targets and identifies highly performing Houston-area high school students who lack the financial resources necessary to attend college and take the next step to higher education. The keynote address, "Reflections on Higher Education," was given by Dr. Zachary R. Hodges, President of HCC-Spring Branch. Dr. Scott Muri, Superintendent of Spring Branch Independent School District, spoke regarding the strong partnership between the district and Chapelwood and the specific ways in which the program fills the void for these students. Muri expressed, “Spring Branch ISD is incredibly fortunate that Chapelwood United Methodist Church and its members place a high priority on investing in the education of our 35,000 students. The Foundation’s deep and sustained generosity to fill both financial and resource gaps through college scholarships and mentoring assures that more of our graduates fulfill their potential and helps us meet our T-2-4 goal for every child.“ Current scholarship recipient Hunter Clay spoke about the impact the support of the Foundation has had on his life. A former Stratford High School (SBISD) student, Hunter is putting himself through Blinn Junior College and will transfer to Sam Houston State to major in accounting.

“Without the support from the Foundation, I truly do not know where I would be today. More than just the money, the Foundation has provided such a network of people to guide me to where I want to go and how to get there. Everyone should be given a chance to attain higher education no matter the situation or background they have,” Clay said. All students in the Foundation’s Scholarship Program have a connection to either a Chapelwood member or a Chapelwood ministry. The majority of the students in the program come from the Collegiate Challenge program at Northbrook High School in Spring Branch ISD, in which mentors are assigned to students to help them navigate the college admissions and scholarship application processes. Criteria for student applicants include stellar academic achievement as well as a high level of financial need. Although the majority of recipients come from SBISD, students from Katy ISD, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD, and Aldine ISD are also represented. “As Executive Director of the Foundation, I have had the privilege of walking beside and glimpsing the amazing character of these hard-working, motivated, courageous students as they daily take the difficult steps to move beyond the limitations imposed by poverty and life circumstances,” stated Teresa Cannon. “They are changing the world for themselves individually as well as for their families for generations to come as many are the first in their family to attend college.” Since its inception in 2005, the Foundation Scholarship Program has awarded approximately $765,528 in scholarships to 186 student scholars providing them with much needed assistance to reach their higher education goals. Foundation scholarships are offered for the entire college experience and are renewable each semester if the student maintains a 2.5 GPA and participates in a community service project.
