A WORD FROM BOB Friends, During this summer season when many people are on a “road trip” for vacation, we are focusing in our sanctuary worship services on various “road trip” narratives in the Old and New Testaments. We’re calling the series, “Road Trip: Sent, Go, Return.” We even have a Road Trip Scavenger Hunt you can play as you travel on your own “road trip.” As you meet the Scavenger Hunt’s challenges, post pictures to #ChapelwoodRoadTrip, and we’ll share them in Sunday worship. Check it out at www.chapelwood.org/chapelwoodroadtrip. Summer vacations are fun. We get to go places we’ve never been. Or, maybe we return to a favorite spot. Either way, there’s an optional element of choice involved in our summer road trips. “Where do you want to go on vacation this year?” is a question that gets the family all excited because of all the possibilities. So in this way, our summer road trips are about us. But God’s “road trip” is different. For the disciple of Jesus, God’s “road trip” is not optional. I loved John Stephens’ June 12th sermon on “The Four Great Commissions.” (If you missed it, you can listen to it at http://livestream.com/chapelwood/sanctuary.) His sermon reminded me of the breadth and depth of God’s “road trip,” the one we are all sent on as disciples of Jesus Christ. That “road trip” is not fundamentally about us. It is God’s mission, not ours, that we are sent on. It is often said that our church doesn’t have a mission. God’s mission has a church. And that involves us. But it is God’s mission. It is God’s passion that keeps it going, not ours. God’s “road trip” is still full of possibilities, some we could never imagine even in a million years. And God’s “road trip” leads somewhere – to the transformation of the world. Wherever you travel on your summer “road trip,” remember, God is already there. See if you can discover what God is doing in that place, and how God is calling YOU to be part of God’s “road trip.” Have a great summer!

Mercy Street Mobile Brings Hope to Many Friday, July 8

Over 30 seniors gathered on Sunday, May 15, to celebrate their upcoming graduations from high school. They led worship in the Sanctuary services at 8:25 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. and attended the 11:10 a.m. baccalaureate service, where they heard a message from Dr. John Stephens. After worship they gathered to celebrate with friends and family in the Fellowship Hall. The luncheon was planned and hosted by the junior class with the theme “How Deep the Father’s Love for Us.” The Fellowship Hall was full with over 200 family and friends in attendance! Seniors were honored with gifts, and Sarah Pattillo delivered a meaningful message to the seniors, leaving them with advice for the roads ahead. Senior Kevin Stout thanked all those who helped them along the way, including youth staff, volunteers, parents, friends, and the junior class who hosted the event. Best of luck and congratulations to all seniors!

SUPER PLACE CAMP

August 1-5, 9:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., Memorial Drive U.M.C. Super Place Camp is a weeklong Vacation Bible School geared towards children, teens, and young adults with special needs. SUMMER 2016 PREMARITAL SEMINAR

Saturday, August 27, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., W101-W102 The premarital seminar is offered to couples preparing to marry, and is strongly encouraged by our pastors. Prior to the seminar, couples will be asked to complete the Prepare-Enrich customized couple assessment that is available online and which identifies couples' strength and growth areas in the following categories: communication, conflict resolution, partner style and habits, financial management, leisure, sexual expectations, family and friends, relationship roles, and spiritual beliefs. A light lunch is included. On class day participants will be given their Prepare-Enrich results along with workbooks. Kaisi Cunningham will walk the participants through each of the categories, allowing time for discussion between couples and for working through exercises in the workbook. Kaisi has a Masters of Counseling and Divinity. She has been certified in Prepare-Enrich for the past 13 years and has worked with numerous premarital and married couples. Couples will be seated at private tables for two, so that conversations will be between partners. Couples that complete all eight hours of the seminar will receive a Twogether Texas Certificate entitling them to a discount on a Texas marriage license. For weddings not scheduled to take place at Chapelwood, an $85 per couple fee will be charged to cover lunch expenses and materials. UNITED METHODIST WOMEN INVITE WOMEN FROM ALL COMMUNITIES

Women from all of Chapelwood’s worship communities are invited to attend and join in United Methodist Women (UMW) activities and small groups. UMW is participating in service and mission activities all over the world, with a special emphasis on women, youth and children. Following is a description of summer activities for Chapelwood UMW: UMW SEW SOCIABLE will meet three Tuesdays in July (July 12, 19, and 26) from 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 noon in Room W202, completing projects for various ministries and charities. The main focus is making Linus quilts and blankets given to children in Houston area hospitals. Other work in process or in the past includes making Bean Bags for Vacation Bible School, book bags for UMCOR, isolet covers for premature babies in Memorial Hermann Children's Hospital, costumes and craft items for Chapelwood children, pillow cases for Small Steps, walker pockets for the Chapelwood Gathering Place, and other handmade items given to charitable organizations. On the last Tuesday of July, they will have a celebration luncheon in W203 displaying their “Gifts of Love” items. Sewing skills are useful, but not required. Please plan to attend some if not all of these sessions. They have fun being together, planning, and completing their projects. SHARE GRACE IN MINISTRY BRINGING IN THE LIGHT OF CHRIST: ACOLYTES 2016-2017

Parents of new fifth graders, please talk to your children about becoming acolytes for the 2016-2017 school year. This is an extremely important element of Sanctuary worship that needs both your support and participation. The acolyte brings in the light of Jesus Christ at the beginning of our 8:25 and 11:10 worship services and lights the altar candles at the front of the church. Purchase your fair trade products! Items are on sale at the table outside the Fellowship Hall from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. on the second Sunday of every month. Purchasing fairly traded products allows farmers to earn a fair price for their crops while delivering quality products to consumers. In addition, fair trade prohibits the use of child labor and encourages the adoption of safer, chemicalfree farming methods. COLLEGIATE CHALLENGE MENTORS HELP STUDENTS STEP INTO THE FUTURE!

"Just 90 minutes a week can change a life..." If you have a heart for young people and a desire to truly make a positive impact on the future of Houston and our community, then Collegiate Challenge may be for you! Collegiate Challenge mentors meet one-on-one with senior students at Northbrook High School who have expressed a strong desire to attend college. These students are in the top 20% in their class and are most often the first in their family to go to college. Mentors serve as advisors and encouragers to the students as they navigate the college application and financial aid process, scholarship requirements, and career exploration. Just being someone who really believes the student can do it can be the greatest gift a mentor can give! Collegiate Challenge meets on Thursday nights from 6:30 8:00 p.m. at Northbrook High School. A mentor training and information session will be held at Chapelwood on August 25, from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. in LC212. THE ROSE

Stephanie was a 50-year-old single mom living in one of the Memorial neighborhoods. Having been laid off from her non-profit job, she took the best offer available to her to pay the rent and provide for her teenage son. That job was at a local realtor’s office and just happened to offer no health insurance. Stephanie worked during the day and went to her son’s high school football games and basketball games at night. She took him to his Bible study when she went to their church for her Bible study. They drove to Austin to visit her parents on long weekends. Their days and weekends were filled up with work, school, homework, studying, school activities, volunteering, church events, and errandrunning. When the letter arrived in the mail from Stephanie’s doctor reminding her to get her annual mammogram, she sighed and set it aside. When was she going to fit that in and how would she pay for it anyway? When Stephanie’s son Brooks broke his arm playing football, Stephanie was grateful that he was covered under his father’s health insurance plan. But when she found a lump in her breast, she collapsed in a heap on the floor. Stephanie’s sister had died six years earlier of stage four breast cancer. When Stephanie didn't know what to do or where to go for treatment, a friend suggested that she call The Rose. She’d never heard of The Rose; she’d never heard about any organization giving free mammograms, but call them she did. She drove to the clinic where she was directed through a mammogram and further testing and her worst fears were confirmed. She had breast cancer.

Women. We are mothers, sisters, wives, friends, students, bosses, employees, teachers, volunteers, workers, daughters, and givers. We do lots of things really well, but what we don’t always do well is to care for ourselves. Studies show women often put personal needs on hold while tending to the needs of others. Many women cite cost and lack of access as reasons they delay preventive services. Yet, early detection mammography screenings are the most powerful weapons in the fight against breast cancer - which is 98% curable when detected early. For the woman who puts everyone else ahead of her own care, The Rose removes those barriers through their Mammography Mobile Units, which take free mammogram screenings to neighborhoods of Houston. The Rose’s Mobile Mammography provides screening, diagnostic services, and sponsorships to those who are uninsured/underinsured or have little access to care. Patients found to have cancer are able to access timely and affordable breast cancer treatment through The Rose’s Patient Navigation Program. The Rose is changing the way care is delivered, not only in Harris County but in 33 surrounding counties as well. In 2015, The Rose provided a total of 68,375 screening and diagnostic procedures to 36,437 patients. Of those patients, a total of 7,270 received 16,741 free or low-cost services. And those services are saving lives of those who do so much for so many. The Chapelwood Foundation is honored to play a part in helping The Rose save lives. For the past several years including 2015, Chapelwood’s Foundation has given The Rose grants specifically for mammography mobile units to serve women in areas of Spring Branch. You want the ending to Stephanie’s story? Two years out, and she is cancer-free! She’s gainfully employed with a great law firm and has retirement and full health benefits. God is good.

CONGRATULATIONS GAYLE AND JACK HILLMAN!

Chapelwood’s partnering organization for the Gathering Place, Interfaith CarePartners, annually presents the Dr. Ronald H. Sunderland Award to one of the more than 2,400 volunteers of this care team program. A committee from their board of directors elects an individual or a couple whose spirit of care and whose service to others reflects the values and mission of Interfaith CarePartners. This year, Chapelwood members Gayle and Jack Hillman received the Sunderland Award during the 11:10 Sanctuary worship service on April 24. Every Monday (excluding holidays), the Gathering Place of Chapelwood UMC provides activities, entertainment, and a meal for those who are affected by Alzheimer’s, dementia, or other debilitating diseases such as strokes or Parkinson’s. At the same time that it provides care to those with memory loss, the Gathering also provides a few hours of respite for the family caregivers, who sometimes have no other time they can call their own. All of this is free to the families in the program. Many of the Chapelwood volunteers have experienced the effects of having a family member with Alzheimer’s. They understand the challenges faced by caregivers and recognize the need for this program. The Chapelwood Gathering Place began in 2006 and has donated over 17,000 hours of fun, companionship and activities for 168 adults suffering from memory loss. Jack and Gayle have been a part of this program since the very beginning! John Burk, President of Interfaith CarePartners had this to say, “Jack and Gayle have caring hearts and it shows abundantly in the way each greets and reacts with guests and their caregivers at the Gathering Place. They exemplify the kind of teamwork only a couple that has been married 60 years, raised three children, and enjoys eight grandchildren can realize as they collaborate to prepare and

help serve guests. Jack’s smile followed by a big hug or handshake makes everyone feel welcome and at ease as they arrive. He usually follows up with a compliment about how nice the ladies look or how much he likes the cap a gentleman is wearing. Gayle creatively decorates each table in the theme chosen for the month and warmly welcomes everyone, getting them settled in, relaxed, and served with a snack and beverage. They are assisted by many volunteers who regularly serve 50-60 people in each month.” Everyone involved with the Gathering Place is part of a wonderful, caring, and loving team that works very well together. Each volunteer seems to know just what needs to be done, and does it, ensuring everything runs smoothly and everyone is well cared for. Those efforts are recognized and appreciated, not just by family caregivers, but also by the care recipients. One guest in particular who’s not able to attend any longer had a wonderful singing voice and loved all the activities. His wife recently wrote a letter to the Chapelwood Gathering Place volunteers, telling everyone how meaningful the program was to her husband. He said, "They made me feel that my life was worth living and like I was a king." Burk continued, “Our work is impossible without the Jack and Gayle Hillmans of the world and the team of volunteers at Chapelwood. They have been awarded the Sunderland Care Team Member Award because of their exemplary dedication to their team and fellow volunteers. Their caring spirits are God's gift to all who know them.” We congratulate Jack and Gayle, and the Chapelwood Gathering Place team! Scott Endress

LEGACY OF LIFE The Chapelwood Foundation would like to thank all our faithful supporters who made our 2016 Legacy of Life dinner such a huge success. We were blessed with over 350 people in attendance! We are very grateful for the dedicated dinner committee that planned a very special night. The worship band from the Branch provided inspirational entertainment for the audience. Ricardo Barnes, Executive Director of the Spring Branch Family Development Center, delivered an

uplifting message about the Spring Branch community and how we can continue to provide a hand up to our neighbors in need. We give our special thanks to all the Chapelwood members who volunteered at the Foundation event, including those involved with decorations, check-in, and the meal preparation and service. It was a wonderful night to celebrate the many ways that God is working through the Foundation to bless others.
