Chapelwood’s Mission is to embody God’s grace as we receive it to those who need it. The Chapelwood family is a service-focused body of believers who welcome all to experience God’s grace and goodness through Christian community. While we are determined to “take church” to those who do not belong to a local church family, we also delight in serving those individuals and families within our church. We provide ongoing faith-building activities and meaningful fellowship opportunities for men, women, youth, and children.

CHAPELWOOD’S STRATEGIC HORIZON STORYLINE In my first two years, a lot of great things have been happening at Chapelwood. We’ve seen changes and heard about a lot of discernment. I believe it is vital that we listen to the Holy Spirit so that the directions we take in ministry are guided by God’s hand. Recently, the Lead Team took all of the information that had been gleaned from chats, strategic working groups, meetings with leaders, the Ministry Council, the Board of Stewards, and our Core Teams to compile a strategic road map called our “Horizon Storyline.” Here is a quick look at what it says and how it will guide us: “By 2024, when Chapelwood turns 75 years old, we envision renewed life, growth, and vitality as we extend our graceembodying ministry culture by rejuvenating existing worship communities and starting new worship communities, which will raise up and equip mature disciples of Jesus Christ, who act to improve lives in the communities we serve." Over the next three years, we will: • Renew all our worship communities to gain new energy and momentum, which will increase our average worship attendance 20% by 2019. A strategic coach has been secured for our worship community pastors to assist them as we move forward. • Begin at least two new worship communities. One is now in process in East Downtown, and another new community is in the planning stage. These new communities will be vibrant and sustainable within three years, or we will gracefully let them go. These new communities, like our current communities, will reflect Chapelwood’s DNA and mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ by embodying grace.

Increase our discipleship participation by 20% in our Grow and Share areas of ministry (study and mission). We will move toward an equipping model of lay ministry that will deploy more laity in ministry, requiring less staff and saving money that will be invested in disciple making. Every member will know, understand, and participate in our discipleship pathway. Employ a consistent and strategic mission strategy in our areas of mission – e.g. Spring Branch – that will allow partnerships to be leveraged for the kingdom work. We will increase our lay volunteers in mission by 20% through competency centers that equip lay people to lead and serve. We will continue to partner with Spring Branch Independent School District to discover new ways to minister to the needs of our local school district.

How will we accomplish these goals? Over the next year, every area and ministry of our church will be working toward the culture change necessary to leverage Chapelwood’s strengths to better support each worship community and to leverage each worship community’s strengths to pour into the whole of Chapelwood. Simply put, we are aligning staff, practices, and strategies across all communities to become a more unified and effective disciple-making body. Everyone is participating in this process, and there is a lot of excitement! This work has already begun! I will share more about Chapelwood’s Horizon Storyline in the days and months ahead. Pray for this process and be willing to step up and be in ministry in a new way! If you want to be a part of this strategic process, please contact Bob Johnson at bjohnson@chapelwood.org. We would love to find ways to have you involved in lay leadership at Chapelwood as we seek to make the kingdom of God a reality in our sphere of influence. Peace,

Dr. John Stephens

Hello Chapelwood! I am so excited to be writing this new series on worship in The Chimes each month for everyone who worships here and with whomever you would like to share this segment. Each month I will work to provide you with insight into the actions of our weekly worship in all of our worshiping communities. From music, to liturgy, to the heart of a worshiper, I want to take you on a journey that looks into who we are as worshipers and how we are called to worship, regardless of style or language. You may be asking why I would want to share this information with you. I have an incredible love for all things worship in the church. I tell many people that my area of worship interest, experience, and study runs from “home and back to home.” What that means is that I am interested in everything pertaining to worship from the time you prepare to come to church until you get back home. You may not realize that your acts of worship actually begin when you first decide to attend a worship service. Your decision is acceptance of God's invitation into His presence. That is an act of obedience, and thus an act of worship. Voilà! Your worship of God has begun before you leave home. I believe that all of us have the capacity to be better worshipers. And no, I don’t mean better singers! For many people “worship” means the music of the church service and everything else is, well, something else. Worship is actually every action that we engage in while we are with the people of God in the presence of God. In fact, that one hour we spend “at church” can be the smallest part of our worship life. Everything we do in our lives has the potential to be an act of worship to God. We honor (worship) God with the words we say, with our actions toward others, and with our thoughts. When we begin to expand our understanding of what worship is (and isn’t) then we also create more opportunities to engage in worship. I am really looking forward to sharing with you some thoughts, facts, and challenges about worship each month. I will always try to do this in a way that is accessible to everyone regardless of your background, (I will share my background with you some time.) Even more, I would love to answer your questions about worship, so send them to me at cgilbert@chapelwood.org. If I think your question is something a lot of people would like to know, I might even include the answer in this series. Until next month, remember this: no matter which service you attend, worship at Chapelwood may happen every week, but we are never complete when you are not here. I’ll see you at church! Be sure and say hello. Craig Gilbert

Thursdays, September 8 – March 30, 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Optional extended study: April 1 – June 8, Cost - $30 Nursery by reservation. Online registration at www.chapelwood.org. Questions? Contact Cindy Pujol at cindypujol@gmail.com or (713) 859-9550 The Gospel of John was Joy of the Lord’s first study back in 1990! With great excitement we return to this amazing book, which presents the clearest revelation of Jesus. He is fully God and fully man, the Word become flesh. John 3:16, most likely the best-known Bible verse, tells us He is the beloved Son whom the Father sent so that those who believe would not perish but have eternal life. The purpose of this inspired book is found in John 20:31 “…these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that by believing you may have life in His name.” When I placed my faith in Jesus, my life radically changed. Over these many years of Bible study, I’ve come to know what it means for Him to live in and through me. To the glory of God the Father, I am not the same woman who taught this study 26 years ago. We are stretched and pulled by the world to go in a variety of directions; theologically, vocationally, emotionally, physically, and mentally, to name a few. Our highest calling is to follow “the Way, the Truth and the Life” which is found in Jesus alone. We hope you join us in studying the life of Jesus and His call to follow Him. Faithfully following Jesus results in discovering the purpose for which you’ve been created. The Creator of the universe will fill you up with the Holy Spirit and enable you to fulfill your designed purpose. From September to March, we will spend 23 weeks in the Gospel of John using an in-depth study guide. You will be challenged through detailed questions of the text and personal application to seek Jesus for yourself and discover the abundant life He offers. Each Thursday we begin in small group discussion groups, gather for worship, and conclude with a wrap up talk given by me. You will also be blessed with Amy Robinson’s teaching on occasion. In April, we conclude our study with Beth Moore’s Beloved Disciple. We will learn what discipleship means through the lens of John’s life and his relationship with Jesus. For ten weeks we will gather together as one big group. The first hour will involve discussion from the study guide and the second will be watching Beth’s video. We understand some of you will only participate in part of this study or forgo it all together. I hope to see you in the fall. Love in Christ, Maude Dawson

GROW IN GRACE IN GROUPS AND RELATIONSHIPS UNITED METHODIST WOMEN'S LATIN AMERICAN DINNER

All women are invited to join United Methodist Women’s spiritual growth study and dinner on Latin America: People and Faith. This is a mission-focused book, and the study will be condensed into one exciting and informative evening with Latin food and music on Tuesday, August 30, 2016, from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., in the Fellowship Hall. Who better to lead this study than Chapelwood’s own Luis Palomo? Rev. Palomo currently serves as the Worship Community Pastor for The Branch, a bilingual, multi-generational worship community of Chapelwood. Luis was born in San Jose, Costa Rica, to Bishop Luis Fernando and Zulay Palomo. Luis’ Methodist heritage has created a passion for the local church and the transformation of lives into the image of Christ. After graduating from Asbury University with a B.A. in Psychology in 2001 and Asbury Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity, Luis planted churches in Kentucky and north Houston before joining Chapelwood. Luis and his wife Jennifer have five children, and they enjoy traveling (especially to beaches), doing projects around the house, and hanging out as a family. Luis and Jennifer founded Envia Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports the mission of the local church to carry out its mission in the local community. Envia currently partners with a Methodist church in Nicoya, Costa Rica. For the study, Luis will provide a lens into parts of Central and South America through the stories of people who live here. Understanding why they are “here” versus “there” is complex on many levels. For many, it’s a matter of life and death, for others it’s a matter of security, and for others it’s a matter of legacy. How would our lives be different if we understood (and perhaps participated in) in the plight of others? The mission study book, Latin America: People and Faith, is written by Sonia Maria Barbosa Dias. Sonia is associated with United Methodist Women and has written other resources for mission studies. She is a black Latin woman from Brazil who shares her personal experiences of growing up in Brazil. She uses short, vivid biographies to help teach about Latin America, its people, and faith. Those wanting to order the book to read this summer can go to www.umwmissionresources.org or call 1(800) 305-9857. Ivan Rhone and the Kitchen Ministry will serve a festive and delicious Latin American dinner for $20 in keeping with the theme of the evening. Online registration for dinner reservations ends August 21 and can be found at www.chapelwood.org/umw. Please don’t miss this exciting evening! Contact: Susan Johnson, UMW Chairman - Education and Program Resources, (281) 682-3031 or hunsy@sbcglobal.net.

GROW IN GRACE IN GROUPS AND RELATIONSHIPS WHEN SINNERS SAY “I DO” BOOK STUDY

Sundays, August 28 – October 9 (except September 4) 11:00 a.m., East Room Marriage is the union of two people who arrive at the altar toting some surprisingly large luggage. Often it gets opened right there on the honeymoon, sometimes it waits for the week after. The Bible calls it “sin” and understanding its influence can make all the difference for a man and woman who are building a life together. When Sinners Say "I Do" by Dave Harvey is about encountering the life-transforming power of the gospel in the unpredictable journey of marriage. There is not charge to attend the study, and books will be provided. Registration is required, and childcare is available. April and Paul Arceneaux facilitate the study, which shines a light on how the gospel relates to the intimacy of marriage in an unexpected way. The course lasts six weeks, and is designed for both partners to attend. This is a course that’s applicable and helpful for couples in all stages of married life – from newlyweds, to those married couples whose kids are grown and gone. “We can be what Christ wants us to be when we give ourselves up for the other,” says Paul. “Our spouse tends to be a full-length mirror reflecting back our sin and our self.” April and Paul are facilitators, as opposed to lecturers. Each week is a class discussion of about two chapters in the book. The Arceneauxs are transparent about their own struggles, which makes it much easier for participants to ask questions, share, and learn in a group setting. April and Paul know that recognizing that we’re all sinners in need of grace shifts the focus from the speck in our spouse’s eye to the log in our own. “Our spouse absorbs the effect of our sin. I didn’t understand that before,” said Paul. April and Paul have been married for only two years, but are dedicated to finding ways to improve and strengthen their marriage. Laughing, they say, “We’ve done a lot of sinning in those two years, so it makes up for it. It’s more like ten years.” As members of Chapelwood’s Marriage Ministry, they have a passion for encouraging other couples to take the steps that will help them to build and strengthen their marriages. The grace that comes from Christ is a model that couples can use with each other. April says, “I have to look at the relationship I have with Christ, how he’s shown me grace. My husband deserves that same grace.”“Grace is truly amazing because of what we were saved from,” says Paul. Couples looking for a book study or other activity to do together are encouraged to register for this class. There is no limit to the number of couples who can attend, and childcare is available. Contact Donna Lowe at dlowe@chapelwood.org with questions about the study and / or assistance with childcare.

CONFIRMATION AT CHAPELWOOD

Sixth grade is an important year at Chapelwood UMC and one of the most important steps in both a student and family's faith journey. After nine months of fun and spiritual formation, sixth graders are given the opportunity to personally respond to Jesus' call to live as a disciple. They will have the opportunity to profess their faith and be confirmed into the Christian faith and the United Methodist Church. We have some exciting things planned for the upcoming year, so make sure you register at www.chapelwoodstudents.com. The mission of Confirmation is to immerse our confirmation youth and parents in a holistic and comprehensive program that is designed to foster spiritual formation leading families to respond to Jesus' call to be lifelong disciples.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2016

What an amazing week in the life of our church! This year over 600 children celebrated God’s life-saving love for a week at Vacation Bible School. Our children learned what it really means to be searched for by God and to lean on him in our times of trial. They truly were the hands and feet of Christ as they played, shared, and served. We started and ended each day with a spirited time of worship. These wonderful children were dancing and jumping in the aisles praising our heavenly Father’s name, and it was a beautiful sight to witness. We got to “time travel” with some silly characters as they made their way through history with guest appearances from our pastoral and church staff. Every day during our small group time, each child said a prayer for that day and wrote it on a piece of fabric, resulting in over 2,000 prayers that can be seen on our prayer rope now hanging in the Children’s Building. True fellowship was had as everyone took part in fun minute-to-win-it games, intense games of volleyball and basketball, and crafts that allowed the kids to really engage with the Bible stories they heard each day. We also enjoyed special guests from our community’s different search and rescue teams. A SWAT team let children crawl all over their BearCat vehicle, the Village fire department and EMS teams brought a fire truck and ambulance, and we capped the week with a special visit from the Houston Area K9 unit. Our preschool children had a week of Deep Sea Discovery. They learned memory Bible verses, sang songs, went on treasure hunts, had boat races, and got swallowed by the whale with Jonah. I saw so much laughter, wonder, and that amazing faith as these children learned about our God and all that he has done and is doing.

12

While all of this was happening on site at Chapelwood, our upcoming sixth graders participated in a branch of VBS called #SOS: Summer of Service. This phenomenal group of students served a different area of Houston each day. They made 5,000 meals at Stop Hunger Now, worked on landscaping at Spring Spirit, and made new friends at the Wesley House as they played bingo, face painted, and sang. A few members went to Shriner Hospital and participated in the Art of Hope Foundation with the younger patients there. Children who had barely spoken a word to their nurses and doctors were laughing and playing with these loving sixth graders. God is so good and was so present during this week of service. We wrapped up the week with our Family Service day where we sorted and bagged all of the donations collected throughout the week to send to our different mission sites like Kenya, Sager Brown, Kairos, MAM, and SEARCH. It was a blessed time of fellowship as families served and played together. None of this would have been possible without our fantastic volunteers. They invested their time, energy, and love in these children and put in tremendous work behind the scenes that made VBS a truly great week. I am so grateful to all of you and cannot thank you enough. I am so excited and can’t wait to be a part of the wonderful plans that God has in store for us during VBS 2017! Blessings, Whitney Hall

SHARE GRACE IN MINISTRY GIVE BLOOD...EVERY DROP COUNTS FEEDING OUR FUTURE BLESSINGS IN A BACKPACK

Chapelwood will be involved in a new ministry beginning this August. Blessings in a Backpack is a national non-profit organization which helps feed children in designated areas who receive free breakfast and free lunch. It is intended to supply food for these children to sustain them over the weekend. Woodview Elementary, located on Bunker Hill Road behind H-E-B, will be our first assigned school. We will deliver meals for 50 children on 38 Fridays during the 2016-2017 school year. In order to have seamless deliveries, we are asking for volunteers to work with us on Fridays from 9:00-10:00 a.m. to set out food items, collect food in plastic bags, and load into vehicles for transportation to the school. If you might be interested or have questions, please contact Ann Radney at radneyad@gmail.com or (713) 553-5882. Thank you for your consideration!

FAIR TRADE COFFEE AND CHOCOLATE EACH SECOND SUNDAY

Purchase your Fair Trade products the second Sunday of every month! Items are on sale outside of the Fellowship Hall from 9:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m. Purchasing fairly traded products allows farmers to earn a fair price for their crops while delivering quality products to consumers. In addition, fair trade prohibits the use of child labor and encourages the adoption of safer, chemical-free farming methods. Also, Global Ministries is looking for new volunteers to assist with selling those same delicious Fair Trade coffee and chocolate products each month. Volunteers could serve every month or as infrequently as once a year. Please contact Vicki Jud at vicki.jud@sbcglobal.net if you are interested in helping this important ministry.

HOUSTON FOOD BANK VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

Spend a day serving at the Houston Food Bank Keegan Kitchen with fellow Chapelwood volunteers on Wednesday, August 17. The carpool van leaves Chapelwood at 8:30 a.m. and returns by 12:30 p.m. If you’re interested, please let Dennis Crowe, dennis@ mercystreet.com, know you’re coming.

Chapelwood will host its quarterly blood drive on Sunday, August 21 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Courtyard Room. Won’t you consider giving 20 to 30 minutes of your time to give a pint of blood? Walk-ins are welcome. Blood donors must be at least 17 years of age and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds. Donors should eat a sensible meal within four hours prior to donation, and must bring a driver's license when they come to donate. Representatives from M.D. Anderson Blood Bank will collect donations. Cancer patients need more blood components than do patients with any other disease because cancer often impairs the bone marrow where blood cells are produced. Because of that, M.D. Anderson's blood bank uses more than 300 units every day. Donors are the most important part of the process. Giving blood provides hope for cancer patients who depend on the support of their family and friends and on the generosity of donors just like you. For more information, contact Judy Sharp at (713) 354-4443.

SPONSOR A CHILD THROUGH MAM’S 2016 BACK TO SCHOOL DRIVE

Please join us in sponsoring a neighborhood child through Memorial Assistance Ministries’ annual Back to School Program. This unique program helps provide uniforms to children in low-income families. Your donation will help purchase school clothing for a child whose parents are experiencing hardship. 100% of all donations will be used to purchase school uniforms. Fifty dollars can supply the necessary clothing for an elementary or middle school student to meet the school’s dress code. We will be accepting donations on Sunday mornings at a table in the Fountain Hallway on August 7, 14, and 21. Online donations may be made through www.chapelwood.org; go to Gifts and Donations; or checks can be made payable to Chapelwood with “MAM Back to School” in the memo line. We hope you will take this opportunity to help a child start the school year right!

SHARE GRACE IN MINISTRY BRINGING IN THE LIGHT OF CHRIST: ACOLYTES 2016-2017

Parents of new fifth graders, please talk to your children about becoming acolytes for the 2016-2017 school year. This is an extremely important element of Sanctuary worship that needs both your support and participation. The acolyte brings in the light of Jesus Christ at the beginning of our 8:25 and 11:10 a.m. worship services and lights the altar candles at the front of the church. If you are interested in this significant act of service, please contact Janis Schulz at jschulz@chapelwood.org. Acolyte training will be conducted Saturday, August 27, at 10:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary.

WELCOME, WELCOME, WELCOME – A CHANCEL CHOIR EVENT

Welcome past, present and future Chancel Choir members! The Chancel Choir is excited to have a new director of Worship and Music Ministries! To celebrate the addition of Dr. Craig Gilbert to the staff, the present members of the Chancel Choir welcome you to join us in an evening of food, worship and song. On Wednesday, August 10, the Chancel Choir invites you to meet us in the Fellowship Hall at 6:00 p.m. for food and drinks provided by the present Chancel Choir members. Afterward there will be a short choir rehearsal to lift our voices up to the Lord and celebrate all who have gathered together! This is an open invitation and does not require you to join our group! We are reaching out to future members and inviting anyone in the community who loves music and has considered participating in a choral group. Our Chancel Choir is a special place for worship and music to come together. There are no musical experience requirements or audition, we only ask that you bring passion to worship and sing unto God. In addition to future members, we are also welcoming past members of the Chancel Choir who have been missed greatly. We would love to see you again! Please join us at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 10, in the Chapelwood Fellowship Hall for this welcoming celebration!

COLLEGIATE CHALLENGE MENTORS HELP STUDENTS STEP INTO THE FUTURE!

"Just 90 minutes a week can change a life..." If you have a heart for young people and a desire to truly make a positive impact on the future of Houston and our community, then Collegiate Challenge may be for you! Collegiate Challenge mentors meet one-on-one with senior students at Northbrook High School who have expressed a strong desire to attend college. These students are in the top 20% in their class and are most often the first in their family to go to college. Mentors serve as advisors and encouragers to the students as they navigate the college application and financial aid process, scholarship requirements, and career exploration. Just being someone who really believes the student can do it can be the greatest gift a mentor can give! Collegiate Challenge meets on Thursday nights from 6:30 8:00 p.m. at Northbrook High School. A mentor training and information session will be held at Chapelwood on August 25, from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. in LC212. For questions or more information, contact Patty Cordrey at (281) 216-6102 or plcordrey@sbcglobal.net.

CHAPELWOOD’S NEW WEBSITE IS GETTING CLOSER TO LAUNCH! We anticipate that our new website will be up and running in the next couple of months. It is being rebuilt from the ground up, so will have a completely new look and feel. Any change of this size comes with the possibility of a few adjustments, so we appreciate (in advance) your patience as we work through some of the details. Keep an eye on the screens around the church, announcements, and your email for the exact rollout date. When it arrives, we think you’ll be as delighted and impressed as we are, and will agree that Chapelwood’s mission, participation opportunities, and culture will be very well represented to the online community.
