GENERAL MANAGER A LETTER FROM THE

Dear Members,

The familiar sights and sounds of summer have been a welcome sign of an open pool complex at Charlotte Country Club. Seeing the record number of families enjoying the pool and Family Center brings joy to my heart. It began with swim team experiencing an incredible increase in participation. It has been such a pleasure to see so many smiling faces at the beautiful new pool complex.

With the opening of the pools, we draw a close to the construction projects that were part of the campus wide plan that began in 2020. The transformation of the campus has been amazing to watch, and I am thrilled that the new amenities are complete, and members are able to enjoy the many new offerings. The most recent food and beverage outlet to open was the new Pool Snack Bar. Perhaps I am biased, but no other poolside dining in town offers up the amazing fare that Chef Laurent and his team have created. One of my personal favorites is the addition of soft serve ice cream. Who doesn’t love a great soft serve sundae? If you haven’t sampled the new menu, please visit the pool soon to experience the new summer offerings.

We have had a busy year so far at the Club and we expect the trend to continue with members enjoying our new amenities. As you will see in this issue, we have several club events planned, including two “Field Guide” tastings and several family-centered events such as our Sunday Splash at the Pool and Family Night Fridays at The Porch. Our Golf and Tennis calendars are lively this summer too, with popular events such as the Golf Member-Member Tournament and our Tennis Adult Club Championship.

In addition to information detailing our upcoming events, you will also find tips from the tennis pro, the recipe to our delicious Cucumber and Tomato Gazpacho, pertinent information on our dress code/operating hours of our newest venues, a tech tip, and more!

As always, never hesitate to reach out to me or a member of my team if you have any feedback, suggestions, or information you’d like to share in the next issue.

I look forward to seeing you enjoy your Club this summer!

Respectfully,

ANNOUNCEMENTS

SAFETY REMINDERS

PERSONAL PROPERTY SAFETY

The Club is working closely with CMPD to ensure our Club property is safe for members and staff. As you may know, there has been a slight increase in petty theft in our parking lots. Our peer clubs in Charlotte are experiencing the same issues, with many suspects hitting multiple clubs.

We have installed security cameras and other safety measures to prevent crime. However, the best way to prevent break-ins is by locking all vehicles and storing personal items out of sight. If possible, keep valuables in a locked glove box or trunk, or secure them in your locker at the Club Thank you for helping us keep this campus safe and secure!

PARKING LOT SPEEDS

Summer is here and school is out! As you may have noticed, we have a lot more kids on our campus these days due to the pool being open and summer camp. Please be mindful of speed upon entering Club property and be vigilant when pulling out of parking spaces. We are so lucky to have a safe space for our juniors!

CONGRATULATE QUINN MOE ON HIS PROMOTION TO ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER!

We are thrilled to announce Quinn Moe's promotion to Assistant General Manager! Quinn's been a valuable member of our team for the past nine years and has grown exponentially in his career while serving the Club.

A Wisconsin native, Quinn attended the University of Wisconsin-Stout. After interning at the Milwaukee Country Club, Quinn moved to Charlotte to begin his career at the Club as a CCC intern. During his internship, he developed a passion for people, food, golf, and especially wine. After his internship concluded, he was offered an assistant manager position at CCC.

During his time as an assistant manager, Quinn learned more about club operations and even became a certified Level 1 Sommelier! In 2019, he was promoted to Clubhouse Manager where he oversaw banquet, dining, pool, and facilities operations.

With new dining venues and expanded operations at the Club, we are excited to see what Quinn will accomplish in this new role!

“Over the last week, having celebrated my nine-year anniversary at CCC, I have been able to reflect on how grateful I am for the amazing members I am able to serve and the incredible team I am privileged to work with each day. I have grown immensely as a professional and person, and couldn’t have asked for a better place to begin my career in club management. It has been a transformational year for Charlotte Country Club, and I am incredibly excited for this next chapter as our Club continues to soar to new heights. Thank you to the CCC team and membership for all of the love and support you have shown me since the beginning.”

If you see Quinn around the Club, please be sure to congratulate him on his new promotion.

Field Guide to Austria & Germany

July 13 | 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Germany’s viticulture dates back to Ancient Roman times, sometime from the 1st to 4th century, when western portions of today’s Germany made up the outpost of the Roman Empire. Field Guide to Chillable Reds

August 16 | 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Chilling red wine is far from a new phenomenon, though not enough wine lovers partake in this simple delight. A good number of red wines actually come to life when served at cooler temperatures—and, fortunately, they happen to be the lighter-bodied reds that many people prefer to drink in the summer months and early autumn. August's Field Guide explains which red wines like a little chill and why it works!

Teen Dive-In Movie Night at the Pool

August 18 | 8:30 - 10:30 p.m.

Calling all Teens ages 10 and up-join us at the CCC Pool complex for a Dive-in movie night! Bring your own float and get excited to watch a Teen Classic - High School Musical! There will be popcorn, candy bars, and parents do not have to be present to attend.

Italian Wine Dinner

September 14 | 6:15 p.m. cocktails, 7:00 p.m. dinner

Charlotte Country Club is ecstatic to welcome Nicola Biscardo, an importer of premier Italian wines with a focus on family owned wineries and estates. He specializes in “indigenous” varietals—grapes that are grown only in specific areas of Italy and not grown anywhere else — because he believes that those wines are the only ones able to deliver unique flavors and elicit emotions. Join us as we taste through curated dishes and wines on an Italian adventure!

Field Guide to Napa Valley

September 21 | 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

Napa Valley is America’s most celebrated wine region. It was officially recognized for its high-quality wines and distinctive regional territory when it became California’s first American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1981. But it was five years earlier that the region gained international notoriety for beating out French wines in blind tastings in both red and white categories during the 1976 Judgment of Paris. Join us for a Cabernet Sauvignon exclusive tasting through some of Napa’s most storied regions!

GAME DINNER UNDER THE OAK

After a four-year hiatus, the Club is excited to bring back the much-anticipated Wine Dinner

Under the Oak tradition this fall! This game-inspired Wine Dinner will incorporate an “elegant woodsy” theme that displays rich wines and hearty meats. Between the ambiance, the entertainment, and a chef-curated menu, this is sure to be a night to remember! Keep an eye out for details on when registration opens for this member-favorite event as we are sure it will fill up quickly!

BOOK YOUR FALL EVENTS

Charlotte Country Club had a wonderful and busy Spring event season! We hosted six weddings, nearly 200 private functions, and 80 club events. We are honored to host your special celebrations and special moments that you share with friends, family, and guests.

It’s hard to believe all of the holiday season events will be approaching before we know it! Did you know that nearly half of all club and private functions are hosted in the last three months of the year? Almost 25% are planned for December alone!

Enjoying the crisp, fall air with a cocktail reception or gathering around the fireplace for an annual holiday dinner are amazing ways to celebrate. As the Club banquet spaces become more and more popular, our events team is gearing up for a busy fall and winter season.

It’s never too soon to start planning. The best way to secure your preferred date for your end-of-season event is by booking them as soon as possible. Our Event Planners looks forward to working with you and getting a jump start on your upcoming celebrations happening this year!

LOOKING BACK: MEMORIAL DAY

We had quite a busy and exciting spring season here at Charlotte Country Club, and we officially kicked off summer with our Memorial Day Celebration and the Grand Re-Opening of the CCC Pool!

While the weather started out a little cold and dreary, the sun eventually came out, and so did our members! We enjoyed some family fun games, such as pool deck scavenger hunt, hula hoop, and a cannon ball contest. Many children enjoyed the caricature artist after testing out their skills on our newly,

renovated diving boards. The DJ was also playing some fun music to swim by, although the pool was a little chilly!

We had a buffet at The Porch, as well as the Pool Snack Bar open for the first time in two years. Members of all ages also enjoyed the complimentary Kona Ice and cotton candy! While the weather was not perfect, there were a lot of smiling faces and we were so happy to see Members enjoying the pool, many for the first time!

CCC THROUGH THE YEARS

An Interview with Vanessa Sweat Dining Room Supervisor

Vanessa just celebrated her 43rd Anniversary at Charlotte Country Club in February. Many of you know Vanessa by seeing her in the Grill Room or now The Porch. She is an important part of the culture of Charlotte Country Club and sat down with Quinn Moe to share some of her journey at CCC through the years.

Q: Vanessa, you have such an amazing history here at Charlotte Country Club, when did you officially start?

VS: Yes, it is amazing how time flies…my first day was February 5th, 1980.

Q: That’s incredible, talk about some of the different roles you have had at CCC.

VS: I started as a receptionist answering the phone at the Front Desk; we didn’t get quite as many calls back then! I transitioned from the Front Desk to the service team where I assisted filling water, pouring coffee, and clearing tables. I then became a waitress, and graduated to bartending. I used to tend bar in the old Men’s Locker Room, this was when it was referred to as the “card room”. Ladies were able to bartend there in the past…I remember serving lots of beverages as well as cleaning up a lot of popcorn! Similar to today, what happens in the locker room, stays in the locker room (with a smile). I eventually got promoted to the role I am currently in as Dining Room Supervisor in 2002.

Q: What a journey! As you were progressing at the Club, was there someone that you looked up to as a mentor?

VS: The teammate I always looked up to was Shirley Drakeford. Many of our members know Shirley (Lynn Grainger’s mom) by seeing her in the Grill for years. Shirley was amazing with our members, great with kids, and was a special part of our culture. She encouraged me to grow into the person and professional I am today. I wouldn’t be where I am now if it wasn’t for Shirley.

18

Q: Describe what it has been like to see the club change so much over the last few years.

VS: Everything is so much bigger now. It’s amazing to see the Oak Bar, The Porch, the Golf House, the new pool complex…it is hard to believe the transformation. I remember back to the renovations to the Clubhouse in 2007, to see where we are today is amazing. The thing that hasn’t changed is the culture…the members care deeply for the team, the team still feels like family, and I couldn’t have asked for a better place work for my entire professional career.

Q: How have you seen the membership change in your 43 years?

VS: The membership has gotten a lot younger, a lot of little ones running around now which is nice.

Q: Is there one memory that sticks out from your time at the Club?

VS: When I first started there was a young lady named May Francis who worked in the Ladies' Locker Room and she introduced me to a lot of the members, and she was a big influence on me. There was a big "to-do" when she retired and that is something I definitely remember.

Q: Is there anything else you want to share as we reflect on your time?

VS: I've been here 43 years because of the membership and people that I work with. We have some of the nicest members. Many of them have told me, "Vanessa, when we see your smile we know it's a welcoming smile." A lot of them feel like family, they treat me like family and I do the same.

From knowing (just about) every member by name, to being a constant source of joy on our team and to our membership, we are so thankful for Vanessa and the influence she has had at CCC for the past four decades!

ALL ABOUT THE PORCH

Have you had a chance to visit our new casual dining venue, The Porch? This new facility opened on February 7, 2023. Since opening day, we have been operational for lunch, dinner, and Sunday Brunch!

Below are a few fun facts about The Porch (as of late May):

• We have served over 17,000 members/guests.

• We have made over $477,600 in sales.

ROSÉ ON DRAFT

Nothing is quite like a refreshing glass of Rosé in the summer (or for our membership, spring, winter, or fall!) – we first introduced Rosé on draft when we opened The Porch in February. After many trials and weeks of searching for the best option to add to our wine program, we found the perfect Rosé on draft!

We sourced the Rosé we have on draft in both The Porch and out at the pool this summer from our friends at Winebow, one of the leading beverage distributors in the nation. The Rosé is produced by a wine producer called “The Gotham Project”, a producer intensely focused on quality, sustainability, and driving a growing segment of the wine industry. The Gotham Project has partnered with leading producers in California, Washington, New York and internationally including France, Spain, Italy, New Zealand, Argentina, Chile, Greece, and Austria.

We’ve brought on their “Sabine” Rosé to satisfy the needs for a classic French Rosé and a wine that is able to be poured efficiently in large volume. This wine delivers the classic Provence Rosé profile with notes of raspberry, cherry, peach, herbal, citrus, and mineral core. A creamy concentration from the small yields and concentrated fruit adds tremendous length on the palate. To ensure maximum complexity, there were over 30 small fermentations using dozens of different yeasts, creating a symphony of flavor. Try it out the next time you’re looking for a crisp, refreshing, classic French Rosé!

Perfect for a day by the Charlotte Country Club pool or to introduce your friends to a diamond in the rough, we have you covered. Here is how to make the perfect summer cocktail for your enjoyment... or that of others!

THE RECIPE

• 1 ½ oz. of Absolut Vanilla

• 1 ½ oz. of Malibu Caribbean Rum

• 2 oz. of Pineapple Juice

• 1 oz. of Coco Real (a swirl will do the trick)

• Lime wedge for garnish

Shane and the team at the pool have already been mixing up this drink and the summer is just getting started! Swing by the Adult Cabana to try for yourself – you won't regret it!

CMAA CHEF OF THE CAROLINAS

Our team is proud to host the upcoming Club Management Association of America's (CMAA) Summer Sizzle Event on August 20! The upper level of the clubhouse will be utilized for a Vendor Showcase, followed by the Chef of the Carolinas Competition.

Club chefs from around the Chapter will show off and showcase their talents as they vie for the titles of "Chef of the Carolinas" and "People's Choice." All funds raised will help further club management education for Carolinas Student Chapter members. Student Chapters of CMAA Carolinas include USC, Johnson & Wales, ECU, WCU, and Methodist University.

CMAA members, industry-supporting vendors, and friends from the hospitality industry will join the Carolinas Chapter and Carolinas Student Chapters for an evening of good eats and fun, all for a great cause!

CROSSTOWN RECAP

In April, we hosted the 20th anniversary of the Crosstown Challenge vs Myers Park Country Club, where a team of 18 players competes in tennis doubles and golf better ball matches. After a couple tough years, a tie, and a Covid year, Charlotte Country Club brought home the trophy! It was a great night of tennis with a lot of support from our tennis community, and the team backed it up on the golf course the following day.

Congrats to our winning team:

Andy Misiaveg, Arthur Whedon, Brooks Lucas, Caldwell Calame, Charles Anderson, Dean Smith, Ike Belk, Jensie Teague, John England, John Grenier, Justin Hannon, Kern Carlton, Oscar Cranz, Rush Shull, Walker Poole, Will Warlick, Christiaan Lee-Daigle, Jarrod Liston

PICKLEBALL COURT CONSTRUCTION

The construction of four new pickleball courts to replace our clay QuickStart courts is underway! We expect those to be ready very soon and will double our number of permanent pickleball courts from four to eight.

This will be a huge addition for a number of reasons. First, it will allow for more of the very popular pickleball "outings" without disrupting regular member call-in play. Similarly, it will also allow for additional programming that can accommodate multiple levels at the same time. Lastly, we expect these courts to dry out faster after rain since they will be further away from the tree coverage and get more sunlight.

This will be very welcome news to our morning pickleball players! We can't wait!

TIPS FROM THE PRO

Try to find a good rhythm with your footwork! You've heard your coaches talk about positioning, balance, and some yelling to get those feet moving. Good footwork is the key to successfully implementing that groundstroke and volley technique you're working on.

Good footwork isn't necessarily being faster or always in perfect position, but can be most helpful when you find a good rhythm and balance to your moving. Whether you're playing a match, taking a clinic, or hitting on the ball machine or backboard, try to find a good rhythm and timing to your movement, where you smoothly move to AND from your shots.

While it is important to be balanced, keep in mind getting too still too early can lead to flat feet and can lead to tight arms and awkward motions.

TENNIS SHOP CORNER

The beginning of September can be extremely hot. So our clothing reflects the heat for both men and women. Our IBKUL Men’s Polo and Crews have been extremely popular. All of their products are UPF 50 to help keep down the harmful rays. And of course, we have them for women as well.

The patriotic trucker hats are just perfect for all your Labor Day festivities.

The Bubble clothing line continues to be extremely popular. Their fall plaids are incredible and would make a wonderful team uniform.

Pickleball continues to be a thriving sport. We are adding four additional pickleball courts to accommodate all of our pickleball players. The Pickleball Corner has a variety of paddles, bags, and accessories for all your pickleball needs. Come check us out!

CCC GOLF TRADITIONS

Spread the Word on CCC Golf Traditions!

PACE OF PLAY

• We always play a golf round in four hours or less and maintain close proximity to the group immediately ahead of our group.

GOLF CARTS

• We never drive golf carts near or through native (tall, fescue) grasses.

• We never drive golf carts within 30 yards of greens or tees.

• We drive and always park golf carts on paved cart paths where available, particularly around green complexes.

• We always repair ball marks on putting surfaces…both our own and those left by the day’s previous golfers.

• We always rake bunkers after playing a shot so that golfers following us will not have to play out of our footprints.

• We never litter our beautiful course and always pick up any trash we see, including the broken tees we create on every hole.

GOLF SHOP CORNER

LAUREN SUSEN, Golf Shop Merchandiser

As we wrap up an amazing summer at the Club, our early fall apparel deliveries will begin in August. The first deliveries are still warm weather focused, but by September the outerwear and layering pieces are added into the selection. A ¼ zip is a staple favorite for our gentlemen, but you'll see new options in crewnecks and hoodies to add variety to your wardrobe. Charlotte is the perfect climate for a vest to top off your favorite golf shirt and pullover combination. Our fall goal is to offer items you'll want to wear on and off the golf course, as well as items you can easily layer if our days start and end chilly, as they typically do in the Carolinas.

Whether you're cozied up in a Tasc hoodie watching college football, dressed in your best Peter Millar button-down for a workday, or you've pulled on your favorite Holderness & Bourne shirt for a round at the Club, we aim to cover all of your adventures. Our selection extends further than apparel to include the best golf accessories the industry has to offer. We have wonderful travel gear like the Stitch UGB weekender bag and Jones leather shoe bag to make packing for your getaways easier. Tervis & Yeti tumblers are always popular, and we've added unique items like the Winston leather-wrapped ice bucket (pictured from our Ladies' Member-Guest tournament) to round out our accessories selection.

Ladies, you'll be excited to see new lines like Tuckernuck and Smith & Quinn stock the Golf Shop, alongside your favorites from Zero Restriction, Peter Millar, & Byrdie Golf Social.

If you have any special-order requests or questions, please direct them to lsusen@charlottecountryclub.org and follow our Golf Shop Instagram @charlottegolfshop for the quickest updates on new arrivals!
