WEEK 9 READING: PERSPECTIVE AS SYMBOLIC FORM

INVISIBLE CITY: Armilla

Question 1: What are Durer’s rules for perspectival projection? (Maximum 100 words) Perspectival projection is a technique that combines the plan and elevation drawings to project an image. These are certain rules for a valid projection: 1. All perpendiculars meet at “central”vanishing point which is at our eyes levels. 2. All parallels despite the direction have the same vanishing point. i. Parallels lie in a horizontal plane have common vanishing point on the horizon - horizontal line through the central vanishing point. ii. Parallels form 45 degrees with the picture plane will have the distance between their vanishing point and the central vanishing point equals to the distance between the eye and picture plane. 3. Assuming that the eye’s location is known, portion of the picture is calculable from the following protion of diminishment of equal dimensions as they precede in space.

Question 2: Describe homogenous space? (Maximum 100 words)

It is an unchanged space through the visual pyramid. The width is produced by the plan and the heights produced by the elevation.

DEVELOPED IDEA FROM THE STORY

OLD QUAD ISOMETRIC

There are five choices for the main theme that are given by the story: 1. Abandoned 2. Unfinished 3. Demolished 4. Catastrophe 5. Invasion My isometric old quad notation and the two perspectives are based on the idea of invasion by the nymphs. Depends on the storyteller, nymphs can be whether good or bad, however in my story nymphs are neither. My city ,one of Armilla’s versions, is a kindom which is ruled by nymphs who have a hatred on men - who they think are a symbol of betrayal. They invaded this city and drove out man existence. The invasion led to the descontruction of the city buildings which ends up becoming a city of pipes (the only construction system that is survived after a huge “war”). Marco Polo, a man who never tired of traveling, starts his journey to the city in order to prove whether this invasion is true. He wanders, hides from the city guards, glance at the pipe column, stares at the hanging lavabo and stares at maiden who are taking an afternoon “shower” (in the order word who are enjoying under the water leaks from the pipe on the ceiling). These elements will be explain in the notation next page. These gives him a light feeling and forget about the intense condition he is in - risk of being caught by the nymphs. However, there is one question in his mind “why there is a “pool”in the central of the city and no one dare to come. He keeps wondering and forget about the time. Then at midnight, he finds the answer.

The line weight of the ribs and vaults are 0.01 and of the rest are 0.1. This helps highlighting the elements under the Old Quad’s ceiling.

OLD QUAD ISOMETRIC WITH NOTATIONS

THIN CITIES 3: ARMILLA

This is a “Woman Kindom where no man is allowed hence the movement and moods of Marco Polo are influenced by this idea. From the keys and the city notations, Marco Polo starts walking into the city lower right corner (from Iso South-East view). The clearer symbol image on the next page supporting the explanation of my use of notations. He has an initial normal walking pace (Thicker symbol of movement and closely spread) then he moves faster - running (Thinner symbol of movement and wider spread), and pause for hiding (Largest size of movement symbol). The arrows shows that he is staring ot glancing. The first moods he feels is relaxing in the late afternoon while he is staring at the maiden playing under the splended water drops (Perspective 1, purple eyes symbol). The circle symbolised people (large one) and a person (small one). Around this symbol is a time curve symbol indicates those people are not there all the time. He continues his journey until he reaches the second scene. His mood changes into intense mood and he is scared by the fearful presents of the nymphs. Following with his movement there is a threshold line indicates time changes from morning to noon to afternoon and to midnight.

QUAD PERSPECTIVE 1 + 2

PERSPECTIVE SCENE 1 AND 2: WARMFULNESS VS COLDNESS

This is one the side of the Old Quad. The first camera position which is Marco Polo’s eyes when he hides behide the column and look at the maidens.

This perspective focuses on the central where nymphs, the main characters, will be added in. They need to catch all the attentions of the viewers hence this perspective works well with this aiming.

“The charm of enjoyment” This scene is developed when Polo described that “...many young women ... luxuriating... under the showers” “in the sun” surrounded by the “splashes” of water. These four elements are all composed here. The maidens are joyfully (however have their own charms) taking showers in the late afternoon. The back ground is a mild-bright sunlight and mountains give a sense of comfortable.

“The ruler” The final third paragraph, he mentions that the explanation for this stage of the city of that moment maybe because of the existence of the nymphs. Hence this perspective proves their presents in the city at midnight. Where smoke around them implies the coldness and breath-taking atmostphere (scary). Full moon only happens in a certain date which implies that this is a rare event and also gives a feeling of something bad will happen. This is symphasised by the stare of the nymph at the viewer and the amount of characters in the scence.

WEEK 4 READING: MAPPING THE UNMAPPABLE ON NOTAION

FINAL DRAWINGS THIN CITIES 3: ARMILLA

Question 1: What is the difference between autographic and allographic practice? (Maximum 100 words) Autographic arts, according to Goodman are like “painting and sculpture.” Allographic arts, such as poetry, can be reproduced. Furthermore, they have a variaty of standard of performance and are operated through interpretation.

Question 2: Why do architects need new representational techniques? (Maximum 100 words)

People Perspectives

The use of line weight, the choice of notation and the decision-making of scenes (including shadow and light) have been carefully thought of through the process of repeating reading the story. This gives an insight understanding every time we read hence developing our themes in our own style mixing with the style of the story. The notations of the movement and character’ moods help to clearly communicate these ideas.

IntenseMood LightMood

Mapping, projection and notattion are representational system and are all important. They are like a language when one need to communicate and get the most underestanding of the viewer. Hence, the more advance on technique, the more we can communicate our design.
