The turn of a new decade gives us an opportunity to refocus. And it’s more important than ever for us to each do our bit for this phenomenal planet we live on. In the UK, it’s estimated that 5m tonnes of plastic is used every year, so for me 2020 is going to be about cutting back. I’m pledging to keep a reusable coffee cup on me at all times – nobody said anything about cutting out the caffeine, did they?! But it’s not easy lightening your carbon footprint – especially when babies come with so much, well, stuff. One thing parents can do, is get smarter with their shopping. There are so many clever pieces that double up, offering longevity of use and saving on waste, too. We round up our favourite multifunctional finds for parents and babies that make minimalist intentions that much more doable. Find all the dual-purpose inspiration you need on page 58. The shrewd shopping doesn’t stop there either. If you’re on a mission for a greener nursery for your babe, flick to page 78, where interiors guru Ali Howard shares her favourite sustainable finds for an eco-conscious nursery. What’s on the Valentine’s Day wish list? Our daughter was born on Valentine’s Day, so that’s given us an excuse not to celebrate. But a post-party pampering session might be nice. LITTLE TREASURES

BE AUTIFULLY MADE, SUSTAINABLY SOURCED AND DESIGNED TO L AST FOR DECADES TO COME, THERE’S MUCH TO LOVE ABOUT Bobby Rabbit ’s GORGEOUS R ANGE or Bobby Rabbit founder Nicky King, it was a small cuddly bunny (named, you’ve guessed it, Bobby) that became the inspiration and namesake for her award-winning online shop – Bobby Rabbit. Bobby accompanied Nicky throughout her childhood adventures and still lives today, delicately stored away inside a shoebox in her wardrobe. With those treasured memories from her childhood in mind, Nicky decided that she wanted to be the person to curate those special toys and accessories that are a part of little ones’ lives not just for a few years, but for decades to come. ‘Cherish when small and remember with a smile when tall’ is the business ethos, and it’s a motto that rings true across every item – big and small – within its expansive repertoire. It’s also what sets Bobby Rabbit apart from so many other children’s retailers, in that each product is designed with quality and longevity at the forefront; not just brought into the world to fit with a fashion or fad, but to relish in childhood and in the many years afterwards, regardless of how things change. Sentimentality goes a long way, of course, but sustainability is Bobby Rabbit’s bread and butter. The brand is very much of the belief that if we all buy a little less, we can still spend the same, and have the added bonus of owning a beautiful collection of items that last for generations. Natural, quality, sustainably-sourced materials are what make this possible, and can be seen across the whole of Bobby Rabbit’s collection, which is carefully and lovingly hand-picked for this very reason. The Savannah! Playroom (pictured above) – one of Nicky’s Bedtime Story collections, which she creates twice a year – is no exception, and its vibrant,

colourful playroom, nursery and bedroom accessories, made from responsibly-sourced wood, cotton, rattan and raffia, are filled with magic and imagination. Comprising rugs, dress-up sets, cushions, nightlights and teepees, little ones can spend hours world-building with soft dolls and animal toys for company, without fear that toys may be worn through or exhausted by the time younger siblings come to play. After all, each piece is designed to last. Every child deserves a Bobby Rabbit, believes Nicky, which is why she’s made it her mission to bring together collections of charming, quality products that capture this enduring magical spirit. And the evidence is

Food that’s certified as organic is a gold-standard guarantee that it’s grown as nature intended. On organic farms, there’s none of that synthetic nonsense. Instead, farmers work with nature, not against it. The fields bloom with the ebbs and flows of each season. Embroidered with his name, this cuddly elephant is one of Troy’s favourite gifts Personalised plush toy £22, my1styears.com

Nothing mak es Denise pr ouder than seeing her fo ur children all together

Steve is a hands-on dad to baby Troy

MY ESSENTIALS You gave birth to your fourth child, Troy, in December 2018. How has the last year been? It’s flown by! I remember with my other three children (Lauryn, 16, Ryan, 13, and Kane, 11), the first 12 months seemed to go on forever, but with Troy, it’s been a blur. I don’t know if that’s because I’m a bit more experienced and taking things in my stride, or if he’s just a super baby! He’s very chilled out and embracing every new phase of his life with gusto, which has made it very easy for me. How was your pregnancy? I’ve been lucky enough to have great pregnancies and it was the same with Troy. He was very frontal, and I felt comfortable for most of the time. I was even able to do a bit of training, and my eating wasn’t affected too much either. Given there’s about 10 years between Troy and my third child, Kane, it was also interesting to see how much more information is out there now. That said, the most magical elements are the things that never change,

DENISE LEWIS OBE

The presenter and former Olympic champion talks exercise, baby clothes

like the relationships you have with the midwives and of course, the joy of your baby being born. How have your other three children taken to having a new little brother? They’re fascinated by him, especially now he’s walking

around a bit more. They just find him so entertaining, and they’re teaching him all sorts of different things. My son Ryan has been like a second dad to him, because he was with Troy a lot during the early days and helping out a lot. I just love watching them all interact; it’s really beautiful.

The former Olympian has been blessed with four great pregnancies

Troy’s first year has flown by

Fitness is obviously a huge part of your life. How did your exercise regime change during this pregnancy? Because of my age, I was definitely more cautious about doing too much. So, I was careful not to bring my heart rate up too high, and did exercises that kept me generally healthy and active, like working on my target muscle groups. My pelvic floor has also been a huge focus; I had a lot of problems when I gave birth to Kane, but maintaining control of it this time has enabled me to do all sorts of high-intensity exercises that I couldn’t do before. Other sportswomen, such as Olympic skier Chemmy Alcott, have faced controversy over exercising during their pregnancies. What’s your take? I think it’s really hard to compare those who have spent their lives dedicated sport and those who haven’t. So, for instance, my body obviously responds very well to exercise

Is sport a big part of your children’s lives? They’re very sporty. My daughter

is more into health and fitness – she plays a bit of netball, but is quite happy to go to the gym on her own and use all the different equipment. My boys, on the other hand, prefer the social side to exercise and playing team sports.

heartbroken. And I absolutely adore Frugi! I never really used to be into bright, colourful clothing when my other children were small, but these vibrant babygrows, socks and knitwear are just so gorgeous.

When it comes to dressing Troy, where do you like to shop? I have to stop myself shopping because I know how quickly he’ll grow out of everything! Tuppence and Crumble’s hooded star wrap blankets are so cute, and I wish they made them a little bit bigger; when Troy grew out of his, I was

Any favourite interiors brands for Troy’s bedroom? I loved our SnüzPod3. Because it’s portable, it was so amazing just being able to pick it up and carry it around the house. My 1st Years is brilliant, too, and Troy has a fantastic elephant with his name embroidered on the ear.

Denise’s career as an athlete meant that her body responded well to exercise while pregnant

The mega-portable SnüzPod 3 proved a hit for Troy and family SnüzPod3 Bedside crib £199.95, snuz.co.uk

If you ever have a bit of time to yourself, what do you like to do? Exercise! I find it so exhilarating. Sometimes I’m not in the mood, but I always try to do something, even if it’s just a little circuit at home. I also used to love going to the cinema – we have a great one where we live, and that used to be mine and my husband Steve’s retreat. Finding childcare isn’t always easy, though, so these days we watch films at home, recreating the cinema experience, popcorn and all! What’s the best thing about being a mum? It can be such hard work at times, so when I get a moment to just watch my children together – seeing Troy learn to blow kisses or clap his hands – it just makes my heart so full. I’m an only child and never imagined I’d have four children, and it’s a real sense of achievement to see that they’re such healthy, happy young people. I feel quite proud!

INTERVIEW: NATALIE KEELER. PHOTOGRAPHY: INSTAGRAM.COM/REALDENISELEWIS

and I felt better doing it while pregnant, but it’s not the same for everyone. Social media, particularly Instagram, also makes things complicated, and there are some pregnant women who post these really elaborate workouts, which can have a negative impact if you’re not used to doing that amount of exercise. Listening to your body is so essential, and I’m not saying you should go out and do a marathon, but as long as you’ve sought advice first, you should try to incorporate something into your routine. And relish having that time to yourself – that’s what I loved. Sometimes I take Troy to training with me, and I use him as my little weight. I took him to Pilates with me once and he was crawling around everywhere, much to the entertainment of everyone else in the group!

omething that I’ve noticed more and more is how ecoconscious our children have become and it’s a wonderful thing to see. When you have a baby, want to do the absolute best for your little one and so often what starts as good intentions begin to slide to make life easier. My elder two are constantly on my back, teaching me about the environment and whether it be a Meat Free Monday or making an eco brick, I can’t get enough of their suggestions. I’m really pleased to see so many of the high-street giants moving towards to organic and sustainable practices. Zara, H&M and Gap are three to look out for. Other wonderful brands to check out are Tootsa, Newbie, Baby Mori, From Babies With Love and We Love Frugi. Whether you’re hosting a mini get-together at home or planning a quiet weekend in with your littlest one, filled with fun activities, take this time to enjoy the company of those closest to you. However you spend it, get into the spirit with some love-inspired décor. Valentine’s is synonymous with red and pink, but you might like to try something different, such as a monochrome palette with pops of red. Balloons, paper fans, pom-poms and heart-shaped confetti are all fun ways to brighten up your space, as are faux or fresh red roses. It’s lovely to involve your little one in the all-important making of a Valentine’s card too. Whether you get creative with baby-safe paint and do two footprints to make the shape of a heart or include a loving picture of you and your little darling, cards are such lovely momentos to treasure. These can be sent beyond your doting other half, and make adorable tokens for grandparents and close friends. If you fancy appropriate sweet treats, turn to page 84 for a Valentine’s-inspired biscuit recipe from infant baby food brand Piccolo. Why not make extra to wrap in cellophane bags with ribbon, and give as gifts? Happy Valentine’s!

Krysten’s LOVES

Knitting. I’ve always found knitting so therapeutic. It’s the repetition, the feeling, the colour and the gradual reveal of something that, you hope at least, is both pretty and useful. Subscription boxes. I first got into these when doing some promo work, but I actually just really like the concept. They make brilliant presents but are also great to buy for yourself; it’s a way of discovering cool new products that you’d usually just let pass by. Snoo baby bed. An extravagance but one I couldn’t resist in order to give my little one the best night’s sleep I could.

HATES

Dressing up. Sure, I want to look smart and I don’t want to stand out for not making an effort, but the process of dressing a certain way and looking a certain way for an occasion, red-carpet event or because of some strange, outdated convention… that really gets to me. My laugh. Charlie Box in Daredevil pointed out the fact my laugh was… I think he said, “quite shocking”. I never knew this until then. Endless sequels. I think it’s the responsibility of all involved to know when something has reached the end of its lifespan, and that’s why at the end of season three of Jessica Jones I think a few people thought we had done enough with her to let the story go.

CLEAR AS KRYSTEN Why actress Krysten Ritter is turning to her most famous role as inspirational for the journey of motherhood

s someone who trod the path of a somewhat unconventional superhero (as Marvel’s Jessica Jones), and has segued her way between roles that invariably balance controversial with conflict, you might imagine that actress Krysten Ritter’s approach to motherhood takes a similarly unconventional path. And yet, despite the strength of her roles as enlightened feminist Dee-Ann in Big Eyes; in portraying Gia Goodman, daughter of Woody, in Veronica Mars; and her acclaimed stint as tattoo artist Jane Margolis in season two of Breaking Bad, the 37-year-old’s approach to parenting is every bit as considered, collected and calm as you might expect of an actress who has spent her career skirting sedate costume dramas. “I’m finding the experience completely peaceful,” she says, of raising her son Bruce, born on July 29 to partner Adam Granduciel, frontman and songwriter for indie rock band The War on Drugs. Bruce Julian Knight Granofsky, to give him his full name, has been well protected from the public gaze by the couple, who have only recently emerged back into focus themselves after taking some well-earned time away from two busy, intensely creative lives. “It has been a breathless time and I’m starting to look at new projects now,” says Krysten, “but with the focus remaining on this incredible new thing I own. I feel that will always now come first… how can it not?” Ritter’s ability to own an audience certainly came to the fore in 2015 when she landed one of the most intriguing and arresting roles on the television landscape. As Jessica Jones, she played a private investigator suffering from PTSD following a violent end to an abusive relationship, and the Netflix series catapulted an already-established star into the realm of superhero stardom. For someone who had seemingly landed a golden route to the very top layer of big-screen blockbusters, was the decision to take time away a difficult one to come to terms with? “I’ve worked a good few years and I felt I was ready for a break,” she says. “I’m never the sort of person to hold on to something out of fear, so really it has been quite easy for me and I’ve been very calm. “I think, in terms of parenting, Jessica gave me the confidence to be myself and not subscribe to the stereotype of how a mother should be or the rules she should follow. “Jessica’s a total misfit as far as her place in the Marvel universe is concerned, and that’s what makes her so interesting. She’s a badass when she needs to be but she’s also extremely sensitive and vulnerable, and I think that describes not just a lot of mothers out there, but a lot of people. We all have our moments of power and determination, but then again we all reserve the right to be affected by the very smallest of

A

things, and it’s important we recognise both. “From right at the start I did suppose Jessica Jones was really more a of a female character study, at heart.” The tall (5’9”), lithe Ritter grew up on a farm in Pennsylvania before moving to New York City after being signed by Elite Model Management. She always longed to become an actress and began doing commercials and working in theatre before landing parts in a variety of TV series. Dividing her time between homes in Los Angeles and New York (where Jessica Jones was shot), Krysten’s relationship with The War On Drugs rocker Adam Granduciel began in 2014. Things began to escalate relatively quickly, and there was little surprise then when the pregnancy was announced at the start of 2018. As for the type of mother Ritter aims to be, she admits she came from a home where her own mother forced her to confront and try new things, and that she almost certainly wouldn’t be where she is today were it not for that drive. “It was my mother actually who heard that Elite were holding a contest at the local mall,” she says referencing how she took her first steps into modelling as a 15-year-old. “I’d been arguing all day with her and I didn’t want to go because I thought I’d just make a fool of myself. But my mother finally got me to come with her and when we arrived the contest was already over! “Then we started to argue in the middle of the mall and it was then that someone from Elite came up to me and said, ‘Hello, have you ever thought about becoming a model?’ That was how it all started. “I’m not sure I’d want to be quite that forceful with my own children, but certainly it’s right to open them up to as much as possible, and it’s surely a parent’s job to give their children the belief that they can aspire to be something that, at first glance, might seem unachievable. Since Krysten and Adam welcomed baby Bruce, they’ve maintained a level of privacy that is to be expected for a couple embarking on the adventure of family. Back in the spotlight in October for the El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie premiere, the actress looked confident, even if her emotions were perhaps less bullish. “I’m not sure I’ll ever get used to the attention, and I won’t be one of those people who show off their child. Going out without Bruce for the first time was a really difficult thing to do but I know it’ll get easier and it’s just one of those things you have to get past as a parent. “The truth is I don’t like going to red-carpet events and getting all glammed up anyway – my usual look is flat shoes and some 90s-style dress; so if I can’t do it for promotional events I’m not going to be doing it with a family in tow when I’m heading out to buy the weekly shop! That’s my way and I know it’s the right way.”

REVIEW

THE REVIEW

Danielle Wilkins AND SEVEN-MONTH-OLD Max TAKE THE CYBEX MIOS OUT FOR A SPIN

P

re-baby, I thought I wouldn’t care what my pushchair looked like – as long as it did the job, right? Oh, reader, how wrong I was. As my due date drew nearer and I delved deeper into a world of footmuffs and seat-recline angles along came the Cybex Mios with its rose-gold chassis, coordinating trim, stitching and buckles. And I was sold.

Danielle and Max set off on one of their relaxing daily adventures

THE LOWDOWN Already a fave with urban-dwelling parents, the Mios was on our radar before its rosegold revamp. This popular stroller is known for being lightweight and functional: ideal for city life. It can be used as a four-in-one travel system – making it suitable from birth – and, of course, it oozes style. The biggest plus for us was that it was light enough to carry up and down the steps to our flat, and weighing in at 8.7kg, we’re still doing OK seven months on.

GOOD-LOOKING? Having collaborated with the likes of Jeremy Scott, and citing Charles and Ray Eames as an influence, it’s no surprise that this most recent launch is just as beautiful. You can customise your Mios with a variety of attachments and colour packs – we paired the rose-gold chassis with the inky Midnight Blue seat pack. To keep things as sleek as possible, we picked the LITE cot, which can be used as a cosy newborn cot, and then as an effective windstopper until your little one is around four years old. I also love the luxe leather handlebar and rose-gold buckle – they complete the look. Max is no slouch in his comfy ride

What style-savvy parent could resist the Cybex Mios’ super-chic rose-gold chassis?

PRACTICALITY & DRIVABILITY So it looked great – but could it cope with our daily adventures? Answer: yes. The four-wheel suspension makes for a quiet ride, and it handles well over bumpy pavements, kerbs and grass. With a narrow wheelbase at the back, I was worried that it’d feel flimsy, but it really doesn’t. Though I had to YouTube it initially, folding the pushchair is simple once you know how, and it folds in one piece, which makes getting it in and out of the car boot a doddle. If I’m being picky – and I am – the basket’s a little small, but still handy for all the essentials.

COMFORT Now seven months, Max wants to see as much of the world as possible, and the Mios allows him to sit up straight, while offering a really comfortable ride. The seat is spacious and deep, and the ergonomic adjustable calf rest is designed to work with the natural curve of your baby’s legs, so he’s never slouching. I was

also impressed with the four recline options, and the extra-extendable hood not only offers a UPF50+ sun shield, it’s great for protecting him from the wind and light glare, especially during naps. Finally, the padded harness is easy to clip together, even when he’s wriggling.

THE VERDICT The Cybex Mios is designed to fit in seamlessly with modern life, and it certainly delivers. Beautifully designed and super-functional – our strolls are smooth and relaxing. I love it, but more importantly, so does Max! From £499.95 for the frame, £149.95 for the seat unit and £134.95 for the LITE cot, naturalbabyshower.co.uk

hat a month it’s been… we’ve been busy with teething, new routines, and trying to entertain a three year old in this somewhat unpredictable weather! We’ve become regulars at the wonderful Maggie & Rose clubs and Jungle Mania soft plays. It’s so helpful to have cosy, baby-friendly places that allows a toddler to let off steam! Our baby Vivienne is now sleeping through the night (hooray!) and has a structured day plan which she’s really adapted to. But we’ve now moved onto the dreaded teething. Every baby really is different: Genevieve sailed through it, but this little one seems to be more affected. I’ve been using all the tricks though; teething powders, gentle gum massage cloths and a trusty Matchstick Monkey toy – which is helping with her grasping skills and sore gums. Now that I’ve got some of my core strength back I’ve returned to my favourite type of fitness, Pilates. I have found some really great classes where I can take Vivi too. Sofia Santarelli runs Mum and Baby Matwork Pilates classes in West London and works with mums both pre- and postnatally. Our family New Year’s resolution is to be more environmentally friendly and we’ve been teaching Genevieve about our planet. Our first eco-friendly step is cutting down on the amount of meat we eat, reducing it to just three times a week.

PARENTING

PROBLEM SOLVING… BE AT NUTRITION ISSUES – AND A LOT OF TE ARS – WITH THE HELP OF NUTRITIONIST Louise Pyne’s TROUBLESHOOTING GUIDE

hether your baby is taking a bottle, breastfeeding or taking solids, making sure that she gets enough nutrients is vital for her health, growth and development. But there’s more – what goes into her little body can also affect her mood, sleep pattern and more. Here, we’ll share some common nutritional problems and smart solutions to keep baby happy and healthy.

W

THE PROBLEM: SHE HASN’T POOED IN THREE DAYS A red-faced baby who’s straining and crying when trying to poo may mean that she’s constipated. Keep an eye on what her poo looks like when it does come out and watch out for signs she’s uncomfortable. Constipation can occur when she’s weaning as her digestive tract gets used to taking in solids. Offer her a few teaspoons of prune juice or mix puréed prunes into porridge. Prunes are a gentle laxative that helps to stimulate the digestive tract. In addition, bathe her in warm water, as the heat can help relax the bowel muscles. Post-bath you could gently massage her stomach in a clockwise direction or hold her knees together and push her legs up gently to relieve any trapped gas.

THE PROBLEM: SHE REJECTS SOLID FOOD Switching to weaning can be a challenging time that requires persistence and patience. Setting

62 | baby-magazine.co.uk

up good eating habits means offering your child a wide variety of foods and flavours and not just giving her those that she automatically gravitates towards. She may refuse bitter or sour foods and prefer sweet flavours, but make sure that you keep offering her new foods as she’s likely to accept them in time. Your baby knows when she’s full, so she may be rejecting food as she’s simply not hungry. Different factors can affect hunger from her activity levels to how well she’s slept so don’t be discouraged if she appears to go off solid foods. Finally, she may be struggling with solids as she’s just not ready. While you can start her on small amounts of solids before the end of four months, some babies just aren’t ready until six months, as by this time they find it easier to keep food in their mouth and chew so make sure you follow her readiness cues which include hunger after a milk food, picking up food and putting it into her mouth and being able to sit up by herself.

THE PROBLEM: SHE’S NOT NAPPING WELL Unsettled sleep makes for a cranky baby, so it’s important to discover what’s stopping her from settling into a good sleep pattern. By four months she should be able to sleep for eight hours at night without a feed and will have two to three naps during the day. If your baby is still taking bottles or breastfeeding, a

feed before bedtime can help them to drift off. If she’s weaning – make sure that you leave some time for her to digest her food before putting her to bed. Her body temperature and metabolic rate also increases after eating and this can make it more difficult to get to sleep, so allow a minimum of one hour after she eats to allow for full digestion. At dinner you could feed her sleep-inducing foods like sweet potato, turkey and banana as these contain nutrients which promote sleep. Remember, babies thrive on routine so try to keep naps to roughly the same time each day. If she starts getting fussy she could simply be overtired, which may mean she’ll find it hard to sleep, so it’s important that you put her to bed before she’s overstimulated.

PARENTING

From constipation and food intolerances to napping and bloodsugar levels, there are a lot of factors that could cause baby grizzles

SWITCHING TO WEANING CAN BE A CHALLENGING TIME THAT REQUIRES PERSISTENCE AND PATIENCE

PHOTOGRAPHY: ISTOCK

THE PROBLEM: SHE’S CRANKY ALL THE TIME Food plays a huge role in your child’s mood, and once she reaches weaning, ensuring that she gets a balanced diet with a wide range of nutrients will help to keep her mood stable. Low GI foods like brown rice, oats and sweet potato help to keep blood-sugar levels balanced which can help to avoid any mood swings. Avoid sugary foods – these include things like flavoured yoghurts (switch to plain yoghurt with puréed fruit) as a high-sugar diet

can make her mood erratic and often leads to a crash and meltdown. Make sure that mealtimes are consistent as if she gets hungry her blood-sugar levels may drop, which can negatively impact her behaviour. If you’re on the go – keep lots of snack on hand such as a purées, breadsticks, and soft fruit.

THE PROBLEM: I’M WORRIED SHE MAY HAVE A FOOD INTOLERANCE Food allergies are a common problem in babies and there are some key signs to watch

out for. Tummy upset or an itchy red rash may be sign that she’s suffering from a food intolerance or even an allergy. Her digestive system might not be able to handle certain food groups like lactose or gluten, but don’t worry too much as she may grow out the problem. For some children, a tiny amount of the culprit food can cause a reaction whilst for others it takes a lot of the food to cause a response. Consult a paediatrician or nutritionist if you suspect that your baby may have an issue.

Q&A with fertility expert

Zita West

“How can I best look after my body during pregnancy?”

T

he excitement of a positive pregnancy test is fantastic, but it takes time to adapt to being pregnant. Emotions can run high in the early weeks as your body changes, both hormonally and physically.

FIRST TRIMESTER During this time many women are craving carbs, but you need these for energy, so don’t cut them out. It takes the whole first trimester to get used to fluctuating blood sugar levels and the growing demands on your energy.

PHOTOGRAPHY: ISTOCK

EXERCISE

SECOND TRIMESTER In the next three months, your baby will go through several rapid growth spurts and to ensure a steady supply of nutrients, you need to maintain a balanced diet. However, you also need calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, manganese and vitamin D for strong bones. Its importance has been overlooked in the past, and many women are deficient. The problem is more pronounced in darker-skinned women, because vitamin D is absorbed from sunlight and stored under the skin’s surface. So while darker skin is better protected from UV rays, it also requires more sunshine to absorb enough vitamin D. While it’s found in some foods, sun exposure is the best way to get your. Taking a supplement will help you top up.

Exercise during the first trimester offers plenty of benefits, but it's important that it’s performed safely. Never push yourself to the point where you have difficulty speaking or feel any pain. Begin EXERCISE slowly and gently: 10-20 minutes three times a As your baby grows, your pelvis tends to tilt week is enough for beginners. The pull of your growing bump can lead to the tightening and weakening of certain muscle groups. Aim to gently work the weaker muscles with light weights, resistance bands or your body weight to gradually stretch muscles.

THIRD TRIMESTER You may be feeling increasingly tired. Focus on building your energy resources – baby will be here very soon. Your pelvis is designed for childbirth, however your baby’s position at the end of your pregnancy will have an impact on the labour you have, so it’s a good idea to encourage your baby into a good one.

EXERCISE In this last trimester you’ll be focusing more on the approaching birth, so you need to change the emphasis of the exercise you take. Building stamina is key to your routine now. If your pregnancy is going smoothly, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t continue with gentle exercise up until birth. Yoga can be particularly helpful as it’ll teach you how to focus on your breathing. Swimming exercises almost the whole body and the buoyancy of the water makes you feel almost weightless, so there’s far less pressure on your back, legs or any aching areas. PARENTING

Seeing double R AISING T WINS CAN BE EXCITING AND TERRIF YING IN EQUAL ME ASURE BUT BEING PREPARED WILL HELP YOU PARENT WITH CONFIDENCE, SAYS Georgina Blaskey he number of twins is rising,” says Dr Lucy Hooper of private practice Coyne Medical in South West London. “This is due to increased cases of IVF and naturally-conceiving older mothers, who are more likely to have twins.” A pregnancy with twins may need extra monitoring and TAMBA, the UK-wide charity dedicated to improving the wellbeing of families with twins, triplets or more, has funded and developed new growth charts which will revolutionise how multiples are monitored. The charts mean twins can be accurately measured in the womb so health professionals can instantly see whether they’re growing appropriately. Until now, hospitals looking after women expecting twins plotted the growth measurements using singleton growth charts and clinicians had to use their judgement to decide how the babies were progressing. Dr Khalil, the consultant obstetrician who performed the first scan at St George’s Hospital using TAMBA’s research, explains: “The difficulty was identifying the difference between babies who were small because they weren’t developing properly, and twins who are normally small.” Undoubtedly one of the biggest challenges is that there’s one of you and two of them. Krista Pound, mother of twin boys and chair

T

of the trustees of TAMBA, says, “When you find out you’re having twins, it’s normal to be anxious.” Initially you need to recover from the delivery and take time to settle in to your new life. “Expect to be tired,” says Dr Hooper. “The adrenaline keeps mums going for the first three to four months, but it’s stressful at times and often this can be on the back of an anxious pregnancy or even fertility worries. Don’t have everyone visit in the first week or two – rest and get to know your babies. Space out help for further down the line when the broken nights are catching up.” Claire

used to leaving one – whether it’s at bathtime, if you’re getting them in and out of the car, or changing one – and they’ll cry a little bit, and that’s OK!” assures Krista. Dr Hooper adds: “There’s a positive side to them crying – you can’t pick up both, you can’t always rush to be there, so they’ll learn to self-soothe earlier.” Seeing the individuality of your babies is crucial. Some people advise not calling them ‘the twins’ and putting them in matching outfits. Dress them differently, ask family and friends to give them separate cards and gifts on birthdays and at Christmas. Be conscious of spending one-to-one time with each when possible. “It’ll make the situation less overwhelming and allow you to get to know your babies,” say Claire. “What works for one won’t necessarily work for the other – that’s fine. Take the opportunity to understand their likes and dislikes.” Krista agrees: “Maybe twins are harder to enjoy as you can’t give all your time to just one baby, and on some days it can feel like you’re fighting fires. Once they went to nursery I had them in for three days but one day separately, so I had a day each with one of them on their own. That space and time gives you the chance to really get to know them.” The over-riding message from the experts is be kind to yourself. Self-care is key. It can be overwhelming to leave them with someone and take time for yourself, but try. Use Ocado and take offers of housework help. “Your partner will also need to be up in the night and helping!” reminds Dr Hooper. “You’re in it together. It can strengthen a relationship, but it can also be a strain. You must make time for your relationship. The most important thing parents can do for their kids is have a strong relationship. Make your children feel like they’re part of a loving family unit.” Then sit back and marvel at the babies you’ve made!

advises: “When financially planning childcare, think about your budget and what will work best. A night nanny is a good investment.” In terms of initial outlay, just because you have two babies, doesn’t mean you need two of everything. They can co-sleep in a cot and progress to their own when they’re older. Like with any newborn, the key to enjoying this new phase is getting enough sleep. “A Contented House with Twins by Gina Ford is great, even if you just take a few things from it. I liked the timelines for the routines and managed to get them into one, even though one fed quicker than the other, and one was part bottle fed. I rented a hospital-grade pump and breastfed them both at the same time, with lots of pillows and cushions around. Once they were older, it was bouncy chairs and bottles for me!” says Krista. Recognising what works for your family is key – one size doesn’t fit all with newborns, twins or otherwise. Be prepared for the fact that your babies will cry more than singletons. “You have to get

PREGNANCY

DRE AMING OF A SON OR DAUGHTER? Becky Dickinson ASKS, CAN YOU RE ALLY INFLUENCE THE GENDER OF YOUR UNBORN CHILD?

S

hortly after I discovered I was expecting my first child, I drove past a hedgerow of oxeye daisies nodding in the breeze. I knew instantly I was carrying a girl and decided to call her Daisy. Except she turned out to be a he. I wouldn’t have changed a thing – although for obvious reasons, I did change the name. But the second time round, I decided I’d quite like a girl. So I embarked upon a mission to conceive one. From having sex during a full moon (boy) to abstaining from orgasm (girl) there are as many methods (or should that be myths?) for swaying the gender of your future offspring, as there are sexual positions. First things first: it’s actually the father that determines the baby’s gender. Men produce two types of sperm – female sperm which contain an X chromosome, and male sperm which contain a Y chromosome. As eggs all contain a single X chromosome, the baby’s sex is wholly dependent upon which sperm gets there first – X for a girl, Y for a boy. Yet theories dictate that it’s possible to give either the X or Y sperm an advantage, to swing the odds in favour of your preferred gender. Disclaimer: the writer takes no responsibility for the outcome of any pregnancies arising from this article. (Although as long as you don’t get your hopes up there’s no harm in trying). The primary method of manipulating reproduction involves planning when you jump into bed. In the 1960s, pioneering IVF scientist, Dr. Landrum Shettles, came up with the eponymous Shettles Theory. He discovered that male sperm is smaller and

faster than female sperm, and has a shorter life span. This led to the conclusion that having sex closer to ovulation increases the likelihood of conceiving a boy, as the male sperm is likely to reach the egg first. On the other hand, having sex two to three days before ovulation means that by the time the egg is released, many male sperm will have died off leaving more female sperm – which have a longer life span – to penetrate the egg. Dr Shettles claimed a 75 per cent success rate and his techniques are still widely practiced. However, most experts are sceptical. “There’s no scientific evidence to prove that you can influence the sex of your child when trying to conceive,” says consultant gynaecologist Mrs Pradnya Pisal, from London

chances of having a girl. Apparently, this doesn’t mean dowsing every meal in vinegar, but eating foods that are high in magnesium and calcium, including dairy products, strawberries, raspberries, fish, plums and coffee (presumably not all at once). Recommendations also include avoiding alkaline foods such as bananas, orange, potatoes and watermelon. To conceive a boy, it’s said you should steer clear of yoghurt, cheese, shellfish and nuts in favour of fresh fruit and veg, plus potassium rich foods like bananas and chocolate (hooray!) One study also found that women who ate breakfast every morning and who consumed more calories around the time of conception were more likely to have a boy. However Dr Geetha Venkat, Director of Harley Street Fertility Clinic, says: “You can’t influence what sex your child will be, so we’d say eat a balanced diet, enjoy trying to get pregnant, relax and if you want to be adventurous in the bedroom, go for it, but that won’t impact the gender.” And for parents with their heart set on having either a son or daughter, Dr Venkat says: “many of our patients have struggled to conceive and simply want to be a parent, whatever the sex. We’d say that it’s so much more important to have a healthy baby. Enjoy this time, rather than focusing on what you can’t control. You’ll love your baby whether they’re Olivia or Oliver.” In case you’re wondering, I did get Daisy next. Although, like most parents, I wouldn’t have minded either way. So whether you’re expecting a boy or a girl, congratulations!

Gynaecology. “They’re simply old wives’ tales.” Yet that doesn’t deter countless couples from trying – and experimenting with sexual positions. For a boy, deeper penetration is recommended to give the faster male sperm a head start. For a girl, shallower penetration is said to give the long distance female sperm an advantage – so stick to missionary! Oh, and refrain from having an orgasm as this draws the sperm towards the cervix, again favouring the males. So much for spontaneity! When it comes to diet, female sperm are thought to prefer more acidic conditions than male sperm, so it’s claimed that following an acidic diet can influence your

BREASTFEEDING

The Breastfeeding Café with

PROFESSOR AMY BROWN

THIS ISSUE WE ASK:

I’M DUE NEXT MONTH AND PLANNING TO BREASTFEED. WHAT CHALLENGES SHOULD I BE AWARE OF?

J

ust like anything, breastfeeding can sometimes get complicated. It’s essential to spot if something isn’t quite right and know where to go to get the support and information to get you and your baby back on track. Here are some of the most common issues women experience when breastfeeding, and some gentle advice. If you experience any of these symptoms, do seek support from your healthcare professional. If your breast feels sore, warm and has a lump or darker patch, you might have a plugged duct where the milk is getting blocked in some way. Sometimes this can develop into mastitis, where your breast will become inflamed and you’re likely to start experiencing flu-like symptoms. If your nipples feel itchy and sore you might have thrush. Thrush is a fungal infection that likes warm, moist places and is more likely if you have cracked nipples. The main symptoms of thrush are a burning or stabbing pain, itching and general soreness. Your nipples might look shiny or flaky. Your baby might have white patches in their mouth or film on their lips, and she can be fussy or upset during feeds. If your nipple looks white after a feed you might be experiencing nipple

blanching – where the blood flow has been cut off or reduced during the feed by an issue with your latch. The nipple may look misshapen too. Usually this is due to a shallow latch and your nipple being compressed, but babies can also sometimes try to clamp down on your nipple if the flow of milk is too fast for them. Blanching can also occur due to vasospasm, which happens when a blood vessel starts to suddenly constrict itself and not let blood through. This can happen in the nipple and it is usually very painful. Vasospasms are sometimes caused by Raynaud syndrome (also known as Raynaud’s phenomenon), in which sufferers experience vasospasm in their extremities – usually their fingers and toes, but also their nipples. In Raynaud’s related vasospasm the pain usually lasts for a while and often happens on both sides. You’re more likely to experience Raynaud’s of the nipple if you had symptoms in your fingers or toes before you were pregnant. TOP TIPS

• For a blocked duct or

mastitis, carry on feeding and feed as often as possible. The key is to drain the breast, which will help with any blockage. You can take a painkiller such as ibuprofen to help with the pain and inflammation. A warm heat pack or shower can help, whilst you gently massage around the lump. If you’re not feeling better after 24 hours, even after taking self help measures go to your GP. • For thrush seek advice from a healthcare professional who might prescribe you medication. Meanwhile it’s important to try to stop it spreading; wear a clean bra daily, wash any fabrics that come into contact with your nipples on a high heat and clean any teats or dummies regularly. Disposable breast pads might be easier. • For Raynaud’s try and keep your nipples warm and dry; make sure you change breast pads/ bra if they become damp. Warming your nipples before feeding can help reduce the pain. You can buy breast warmers or fleecy breast pads – and keep your room heated at night in the winter! If you suspect the issue is with your latch seek support ASAP. If your latch feels fine, your GP might be able to prescribe medication.

BUMP MEASUREMENTS This issue, the sisters discuss the size of your burgeoning bump

veryone seems obsessed by your bump when you’re pregnant. It always strikes us as baffling that no one would normally dare to comment on the size of your tummy but as soon as you’re pregnant, complete strangers feel the urge to comment on how big or small they deem your belly. For some women though there’s no discernible bump for quite some time. Even at the 20-week scan, a few people worry that there should be a bump. We always advise women not to worry about the lack of a bump – you’ll have one soon enough. And in the same way that all of our bodies are different shapes and sizes when we’re not pregnant, our bumps are a host of different sizes when we’re pregnant. Your midwife or doctor will start measuring your bump from around 28 weeks. It’s a rudimentary check performed with a tape measure, from the top of your uterus to your pubic bone, that’s done every time you see your midwife. Broadly speaking, the size in cm should correlate with the amount of weeks pregnant you are. It’s more about the trajectory though – some bumps just measure slightly smaller and some are slightly bigger. As long as the measurements are continuing along the same trajectory, there’s usually no cause for concern. It’s worth remembering that this measurement is a bit subjective – different midwives can get different readings because of the way they’re measuring and because it’s using a simple tape measure, it’s not very accurate. Often you’ll get a more accurate reading if the measurement is

your body for your bump to hide, so your bump might look smaller from the outside. However if there are concerns that your baby is too small, your midwife will probably request a scan and for you to see an obstetrician to check that all is OK. The worry is that the placenta might not be functioning as well as it should and this could impact your baby’s growth. If, after scans and seeing an obstetrician, there were still concerns, they might suggest inducing labour early. Seeing the number of pregnant women every week we do on The Bump Class, we know how much people worry about the size of their bump and how other people’s comments make them worry (even if their midwife has reassured them that nothing’s wrong). Our advice is to trust that you’re being well looked after.

done by the same person every time. If there are any worries about the size of your bump, they would refer you for a scan and keep a closer eye on you. If your bump is measuring big, one of the risks is that you have gestational diabetes so they’d do a glucose tolerance test to check. They might also be concerned that you’re having an especially large baby, although a big bump doesn’t always mean a big baby. Remember there’s a lot of other stuff making up the bump other than the baby – there’s a sizeable placenta and plenty of amniotic fluid. If you’re a shorter person, your bump is likely to look larger by comparison than it might on a tall person. If your bump is measuring small, it doesn’t necessarily mean that your baby is small. If you’re tall and have a long body, there’s more space within

• 60g white chocolate chips, plus 60g white chocolate for drizzling METHOD

Preheat the oven to 170°C/325°F/Gas mark 3. Cream together the butter and both types of sugar, then break in the egg, add the vanilla essence and mix well together. Sift together the flour, salt, cinnamon and bicarbonate of soda, then add to the creamed mixture until a dough forms. Lastly stir in the cranberries and chocolate into the dough. FOOD SALMON FISH PIE Preparation: 10 minutes Cooking: 30 minutes Suitable from around 7 months Suitable for freezing

Salmon and cod are perfect partners in this creamy, fish dish. Peas and leeks adds a delicious fresh vegetable taste and our signature hint of basil and parsley finish off this classic dish perfectly. INGREDIENTS

• 600g potatoes • 6 tbsp of milk • 20g butter • dash of olive oil • ½ onion or 1 shallot, peeled and diced • 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed • ½ leek, trimmed and diced • 1 medium carrot, peeled and diced

Vegetables like carrot, leek and peas turn this creamy fish dish an extra-fresh, hearty dinner

84 | baby-magazine.co.uk

•100ml milk • 200ml low-salt vegetable or fish stock • 1 ½ tsp chopped parsley, thyme and basil • 200g salmon, skin removed & cut into 2 cm chunks • 150g cod, skin removed & cut into 2 cm chunks • 70g frozen peas METHOD

Pre-heat the oven to 200ºC/400ºF/Gas 6. However, if making this as a purée for toddlers, you don’t need to use the oven. Place the potatoes in a pan of cold water and bring to the boil. Cook for around 20-25 minutes until they’re soft. Drain and mash with the butter and milk. Set aside. To make the sauce, heat the olive oil in a pan and sauté the onion for 5-6 minutes until soft. Add the garlic and leek and cook for a further 8 minutes until soft.

Gradually, stir in the fish or vegetable stock and milk then cook over a medium heat, stirring continuously and bring to the boil, then cook for a few minutes to thicken the sauce. Remove from the heat and stir in the chopped fresh herbs. Add in the fish and peas (make sure to check for bones in the fish first). If making for the whole family or for children over 12 months old. Remove the portion for the family, season well and place in a small dish or 4 ramekins, spoon over the potato (season the potato for the whole family) and grate over some parmesan. Bake in a preheated oven for 25 minutes. For your baby’s portion, place the fish and sauce back on a medium heat and cook for 4-5 minutes until the fish is cooked through. Remove from the heat and blend the fish mix. Mix a little potato in with the fish mix and serve.

Antioxidant-rich, slightly tart raspberries add a pleasing contrast to sweeter fruit purées and are a great fruit to introduce to your little one. Try blending with the other fruits that are in season over the summer such as peaches and raspberries. This is also delicious frozen in blobs of a piece of baking paper, or into ice-lollies.

METHOD

• 6 raspberries, halved and pitted • 1 ripe peach, quartered and pitted • 1 tbsp (heaped) full-fat natural yogurt

Once you have cut and removed the stones from the peach and rasperries, simply blend with the yogurt. Tip: if the fruit has too much water and the purée is a little thin, add a teaspoon of chia seeds or linseeds to the blender and blend with the fruit and yogurt in order to thicken.

• Listen and respond to your baby’s cues. Try not to worry if your baby’s not that interested in food. Milk is still a major source of nutrition in the first year, so offer food at mealtimes, but don’t worry if you get flat-out refusal. The offering and exploring is more important than quantity in weaning. • Find a balance. Offer a rainbow of fruit and vegetables and sources of protein. You may need to try different foods a few times, but be patient; it’s a big change and takes time for your baby to get used to new tastes. • Encourage a taste adventure. Get your baby trying a wide range of ingredients and tastes, from naturally sweet and savoury to sour and bitter. Enjoy their faces as they explore these new flavours, and keep offering stronger ones, such as bitter greens and sour fruits. It’s vital that they’re exposed to these early on. • Lead by example. Eating together is key to the weaning journey. Babies are great mimics and eating is a very social experience, so even if it’s just a snack, take time to eat together. • Get out of the kitchen. Feeding can take time, but you don’t need to stick to three set meals a day. If you have more time in the morning, make the morning meal more substantial. If you want to get out over lunch, pack some boxes of soft finger food that you can enjoy with other babies and parents. THIS MONTH W E VI S IT…

The Marylebone, London

NEWS

WHEREVER YOUR DESTINATION, TR AVEL IN ST YLE WITH BABY IN TOW

Editor REBECCA MOORE resets with an indulgent break in the city

I

love it, but there’s no two ways about it, Christmas is exhausting. Particularly if you’ve spent it swerving remote control cars, standing on Lego pieces and wrestling with sleep bags. So forgive me if post festivities I was craving some adult-only indulgence. And The Marylebone offered me just that. This Doyle Collection hotel is in one of central London’s most fashionable areas, and while rather glitzy and modern in its aesthetics, the service is old school with a nothing’s-too-much-trouble attitude; ideal if your plan is to fully switch off. The hotel is home to 18m indoor pool – a rarity in central London. In keeping with its wellness focus, the hotel grants guests complimentary access to its on-site health club, Third Space. But before taking a dip, an Elemis Deep Tissue Massage was a necessity. As my shoulder tension receded, I floated off to the land of nod. Pure bliss. And for those expecting, the Elemis Peaceful Pregnancy Massage is 75 minutes of pure relaxation that’s not to be missed. My visit didn’t peak in Third Space, however, as our Luxury King Suite was the true height of luxury. This third-floor haven didn’t feel like part of a hotel at all – with the prominent corner bay window, it felt more like its own wing. Light and airy with a bed fit for starfishing, a cot or rollaway bed can be arranged for any little ones in tow. But could the food complete the five-star experience? The answer: oh, yes. The hotel boasts four restaurant-bar options; we opted for 108 Brasserie which, unlike many in-house restaurants, this feels like a separate entity, with its standalone entrance on the cobbles of Marylebone Lane. Elegant without being fussy, the food is simple with a short menu that packs a punch – the crispy confit duck will melt in your mouth. Fresh from this 24-hour self-care session, I’m refreshed and ready to now face 2020.

MAURITIUS Daisy Shields SEES SHOOTING STARS IN THE INDIAN OCE AN

‘ The family managed the 12-hour flight relatively unscathed

Daisy got to grips with the local wildlife

88 | baby-magazine.co.uk

ell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?’ This gem by American poet Mary Oliver was in my mind when I arrived in Mauritius with my baby, as the lush greenery seems to make everything flourish. I’ll always cherish my diary entry on his first night of happily wanting his own cot. ‘He’s growing out here,’ I wrote, ‘into a little boy’. I thought it best to wait until arriving in paradise before phoning the doting grandparents to casually mention that we’d brought their nine month-old grandson on a 12-hour flight to the Indian Ocean. In fact no one needed to worry: The Residence in Belle Mare is a familyfriendly gem, while Mauritius is among the best long-haul destinations for young families. Just an hour from the airport, the hotel can organise transfers, and with a few naps and breastfeeding on take-off and landing, we survived the long flight unscathed. In many ways it’s the ideal time; under-twos save on the cost of the flight and British Airways provide a bassinet to (fingers crossed!) sleep in. A colourful melting pot of cultures and languages, temples, mosques and churches, with English and French widely spoken and no malaria, yellow fever or Zika concerns, it’s the wealthiest African country with just a four-hour time difference, pristine white beaches, shallow waters and abundant wildlife. Staying at The Residence is like stepping into the pages of a Somerset Maugham novel: slatted shutters, softly

T

whirring ceiling fans and cool cream interiors. The service is exceptionally child-friendly without being ‘loud.’ Relatively small at 135 rooms with a daily kids’ club for treasure hunts and picnics, the gentle Mauritian attitude to children was on display here. Rakesh decked our dinner table with flowers and sweet spices, Kunal turned messy blankets into fan-shaped hearts and left poems on our pillows, Amanda brought treats with Xander’s watermelon juice and Riccardo taught him high-fives at the boathouse. In summer (October to May) rays are fierce, but in his stripy hat and sunblock Xander enjoyed poolside mornings under the frangipane tree and my husband spent afternoons sailing, while we watched the monkeys play in guava trees and napped in the shade of the Badamier. Each night we stepped out with the baby carrier to see the shooting stars Mauritius is famous for, as local families hunted sand crabs, filling buckets by torchlight. One night we came across a fire display and the pounding drums of traditional Sega music, symbol of Creole culture and a rite of passage. On another night, we witnessed a vivid blood-red tiger moon, streaked with clouds. Later, back on our terrace, as strains of Cole Porter drifted through the fragrant air, Xander slept soundly in his cot next door, exhausted by it all. A Garden View double room starts from £325 per night on a half-board basis, cenizaro.com

A FLIGHT-FREE SAFARI Safari holidays can be hugely enriching for kids, but they usually involve a long-haul flight. Port Lympne Hotel and Reserve in Kent offers the perfect alternative: a world-class safari park experience with luxe overnight lodges, many of which overlook the animal enclosures. Starting life as a private collection of exotic animals, the reserve has become a leading pioneer in the fight against the extinction of endangered species, breeding rare black rhinos and releasing them back into the wild. The conservation park is home to over 700 animals, including zebras, apes and lions, and dino-loving kids will enjoy taking a golf-buggy tour through the model dinosaur forest. On our private safari tour, my toddler handfed giraffes and scatter fed some gigantic silverbacked gorillas. The wilds of Africa had been brought to our doorstep! NEED TO KNOW: The lion and tiger lodges are the sleepover hot-tickets, as there’s only glass between your couch and the big cats. aspinallfoundation.org/port-lympne

CONNECT WITH NATURE AT A FARM STAY

Toddlers and farm animals are a winning combination, and Gladwins Farm in Suffolk offers an enchanting place for little ones to connect with nature. The farm has excellent green credentials, using both a wood chip boiler and solar energy. The 10 tastefully decorated cottages are surrounded by woodland, perfect for walks and den building. There are also paddocks of pigs, goats, sheep and chickens for kids to feed, plus a heated indoor swimming pool with inflatables. Toddler highlights included spotting animals from the bedroom window, petting the cute miniature pony and collecting eggs from the coop each morning, all while singing a rousing rendition of Old Macdonald! NEED TO KNOW: The on-site honesty shop is pre-stocked with cupboard essentials. gladwinsfarm.com

RE-WILD AT SWALLOWTAIL HILL

Looking like it’s fallen straight out of the pages of a fairytale book, Penfold cabin at Swallowtail Hill in Sussex is the place to get away from it all, cook over an open fire and let the kids run free in the fenced-in paddock. Penfold cabin is electricity-free, whilst other lodges at the farm have en suite toilets and electricity, so choose according to how offgrid you fancy going. Penfold and Wood cabin also share the same paddock, so make a good option for holidaying with friends. During our stay, we were serenaded to sleep by the sound of owls in the nearby forest, before waking to feed the animals on the farm, including a friendly pair of donkeys and a resplendent pig named Curly Sue, who has now become a legend in our family! A GREEN MINI-BREAK IN AMSTERDAM

Hop on a morning Eurostar train from London’s King’s Cross St Pancras station and you could be exploring Amsterdam’s canals by lunchtime. Creating a sizable 90 per cent less CO2 than flying, the Eurostar (eurostar.com) is one of the greenest ways to travel. The four-hour outward journey is direct, whilst the return involves a change at Brussels, taking around five hours. Recently voted one the most sustainable cities in the world, Amsterdam is a great choice for families, with bikes, parks, museums and pancakes a plenty. We stayed at Hotel Twenty Eight’s serviced apartments, situated in the upand-coming Olympic Stadium area, just a short tram ride from the centre. The award-winning eco hotel manages to combine family-friendly – plenty of space, your own kitchen, cots and high chairs – with chic mid-century design. NEED TO KNOW: The I Amsterdam card gives access to over 70 museums, public transport and citywide discounts. twentyeight.nl

Camping out under the stars is the stuff that childhood memories are made of. If it’s been a while since you’ve slept under canvas, then ease yourself back in with a visit to Home Farm Glamping, a rural idyll that’s reassuringly geared up for families. As London’s nearest glamp-site, it’s easy to access via the tube and a short taxi ride. Once there, you’ll discover a cluster of bell tents and tipis in a wild meadow surrounded by picturesque lakes and forests. There’s a barn with a kitchen, on-site showers and toilets, plus plenty of handy baby equipment. In the space of a weekend, my toddler became an expert at collecting firewood and toasting marshmallows over the campfire. As night fell, we bedded down under snug duvets, before rising to the sound of birdsong and a mug of hot cocoa in the morning. BUSINESS Joanna believes that you have to put the hours in to really make your business succeed

Daughters Mimi and Bella were the inspiration behind Childs Farm

Tell us a bit about the brand. I came up with the idea for Childs Farm because my daughters, Mimi and Bella, have sensitive skin and very fine, flyaway hair. Bella in particular had so many allergies and sensitivities as a baby, it was a challenge to find anything for her skin. I was brought up using natural remedies, so I was keen to find something similar but couldn’t, which prompted me to make my own. I was intending to do a degree in natural medicine, but once I started working on this, it became my full-time focus. What tips do you have for those wanting to start a business? Any successful business is dependent on super-human drive, commitment and ambition – not forgetting a thoroughly researched, brilliant idea! You need to understand the competition and offer something different. If you really want it, you’ll find the energy to do it but be prepared to give it everything. In the skincare industry sustainability is a big issue, as a brand how do you react to this? It’s a subject that’s really close to

98 | baby-magazine.co.uk

INSPIRE JOANNA JENSEN

The Childs Farm founder talks raising girls, business goals and her commitment to going green my heart, so naturally sits within Childs Farm core company values. We practice sustainability across all aspects of the company. All our bottles and caps are widely recyclable and feature the recycling symbol (known as the Mobius loop). We also use 30 per cent post-consumer recycled plastic in our 250ml and 500ml bottles, giving it a second or third or fourth life instead of using brand new virgin material. Our pumps are made from a mix of polypropylene, polyethylene, stainless steel

and glass, and the recyclability of these varies by region. If you cannot recycle these in your area please remove the pump from the bottle and the bottle can still be recycled. We’re reviewing new options for our pumps, however, this is more challenging due to the recycling facilities currently available in the UK. As well as our products, we’ve also made some really positive changes in our gift packaging. Our gift sets previously had a plastic window – these have now been removed so that the box is fully cardboard. Our cardboard sources are also FSC approved. We choose eco-conscious solutions where we can, for example our paper is securely shredded – and in 2019 we saved 38 trees just from our paper recycling! We also recycle glass, Tetra Paks and batteries at the local recycling centre; printer

Made using all-natural ingredients, Childs Farm products are kind to baby’s skin and hair

cartridges get sent back to the supplier for recycling and food waste gets composted for the office garden. How do you balance it all? Working full-time, running a business, being a parent and a girlfriend is pretty challenging. As my girls are now 11 and 13 they need me more, and add to that the love of my life, Jonathan, who I met four years ago, and his two kids, it’s all go. Very recently I hired a new MD into the business to allow me to focus on the parts of the business I love the most, this means I will shortly be taking my first holiday in nine years without a laptop – which is real progress. The world is a garden in which many flowers grow; if we were all the same, it would be pretty dull. So accept what you can do and are capable of. What’s next for Childs Farm? In 2020, the plan is to continue developing the Childs Farm product line with our innovative technical and formulations team. Watch this space! childsfarm.com
