On behalf of the Chicago Yacht Club, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all participants and fans of the 112th running of the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac Sponsored by Wintrust. This iconic 333- mile race attracts sailors from all over the world as well as families who have raced together from one generation to the next. The Race has only been cancelled twice in its century old history – 1918 and last year, 2020. The fact that the Mac is back only further demonstrates the resilience and adaptability that got us through the other side of this pandemic and back to being able to fully enjoy being on the water. Those qualities of resiliency and adaptability are shared by all who participate in this Race as well as all those who share passion for the water. May we all take a moment this year to appreciate the extraordinary opportunities this Race provides for comraderies and a lifetime of memories. I wish all the very best in the Race and most importantly a safe trip to the Island. I would also like to especially thank all who helped make this Race possible this year. A special thanks to Race to Mackinac Committee Chair, Martin Sandoval, and his dedicated Committee members who worked tirelessly throughout the past year in planning the Race and the myriad of events surrounding it in the face of enormous uncertainties created by the pandemic. Their massive efforts were part of a team that included our wonderful Race Committee and Chicago Yacht Club Staff both on and off the water. The countless hours devoted by this team was then financially supported by all of our sponsors, including our presenting sponsor Wintrust. My heartfelt thanks extends to this entire team and our sponsors as well as all participants this year in making this extraordinary event once again possible. As you will see from this edition of the Blinker, the boating season at Chicago Yacht Club is in full swing. All of our Committees and Fleets have been hard at work planning a full slate of events including numerous opportunities for members to utilize the Club to give back to the community. We also have more opportunities than ever to get out on the water even if you do not have a boat, including Sonars, Tom 28s, a Duffy Electric Boat, and a Power Boat together with paddle boards and kayaks. Everyone at the Club has the common bond of sharing passion for the water and we have much to celebrate this season. Please join Nancy and me on and off the water around the Club. Sincerely,
Nick Berberian Commodore, Chicago Yacht Club berberian@chicagoyachtclub.org

PRE-RACE COVERAGE ON LAND SEE THE BOATS AT MONROE STATION In the days leading up to the Race to Mackinac, race boats are docked at Chicago Yacht Club’s Monroe Station at the corner of Lake Shore Drive and Monroe Street in Chicago. Stroll along the lakeshore path just north of Monroe Street and see all the action. Other boats are docked at CYC’s Belmont Station in Belmont Harbor, easily visible from the lakeshore path north of Belmont Avenue. SEE THE PARADE OF BOATS FROM NAVY PIER July 17th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. provides a wonderful opportunity to see the boats pass by the east end of Navy Pier on their way to the start. The parade is free and open to the public.
COVERAGE ON WATER YB TRACKING YB Tracking, the leading provider of tracking services for offshore yacht races, equips each racing boat with a tracker that sends a ping about every 10 minutes through a satellite, showing its location on the Race Course. THERE ARE TWO WAYS TO SEE THE LIVE TRACKING: From your Computer: Tracking is available via www.cycracetomackinac.com From your Phone or Tablet: For the best experience on your mobile device (iOS or Android) download the free app – YB Races and select Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac to view the race tracking.
FOLLOW THE RACE ON SOCIAL MEDIA Starting Friday, July 12, stay tuned for interviews with the racers, weather updates from meteorologist Chris Bedford, and expert race analysis, as we follow the boats on social media. Want to be part of the Race? Be sure to use our official hashtags, #CYCRTM and #Americas Offshore Challenge to keep up with all Mac Race events. Get real-time updates while the race is underway, select boats will be enabled with GPS transponders to tweet during the race. They will all appear under the Race’s Twitter account and be tagged with the tweeting boat’s name.

THE MAC IS BACK BY ADAM COLLINS
This July, hundreds of sailing crews will once again test their skills as they race f rom Navy Pier in Chicago to the Mackinac Island lighthouse, as the Chicago Yacht Club’s famed Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust (CYCRTM) returns. After taking a hiatus in 2020 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the 112th edition starts Friday, July 16 for cruising sailboats and Saturday, July 17 for performance sailboats. “ The Race to Mackinac is f resh, exciting, challenging and very different every year,” said CYCRTM Race Chair Martin Sandoval, noting that preparation, crew work, sea state and weather conditions can make or break performances. “It’s a test of strength, endurance, strategy and will power. At the same time, it is simply a scenic offshore race where you can actually see the cities along the shorelines…the bridges, the lighthouses… and then you end up at Mackinac Island, a magical destination that has to be seen to be believed. The Chicago Yacht Club is just so pleased to be back on track with this incredible sailing tradition.” Started in 1898, the race annually covers 333 statute miles and hosts over 3,000 sailors f rom across the country and around the world. Thus far, the largest boat entered in the 112th running is Peter Thornton’s (Burr Ridge, IL) historic 104-foot ketch Whitehawk (in the Cruising Division). Of Thornton’s 19 crew members, nine share his surname. At the other end of the spectrum, the two smallest boats in the fleet are 26 footers, each being sailed with just two people (in the Doublehanded Division) and each having one Slovenian and one American aboard.
“ The ‘Chicago Mac’ is the oldest annual f reshwater distance race in the world, and it has earned a reputation as one of the most prestigious sailing races, with entries f rom the Midwest and Canada as well as the East, West and Gulf Coasts of the U.S. and as far af ield as Hong Kong, New Zealand and Australia,” said Sandoval. “For many families it’s a rite of passage for their children and their children’s children to experience the Race to Mackinac.” Sandoval added that the race also attracts many different types of sailors, f rom newbies to veterans, amateurs to pros, and youngsters to the “Old Goats” who have completed more than 25 Chicago Macs.

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A GOAT GENE MCCARTHY GOING FOR 67 MAC RACES IN 2021, CYC OLD GUARD AND ISLAND GOAT BY BETSY BARRETT
Gene McCarthy stands out in 2021 as he attempts to complete his 67th Mac, exceeding all other goats. (Don Glasell has sailed 56 Macs.) It will be an absolutely astonishing achievement! What does a stalwart Island Goat look like? In 1953, McCarthy crewed in his f irst Race to Mackinac. He sailed in the 1955 long Mac, taking a third place in section after running out of food more than a day before the f inish. In 1970, hurricane-force winds nearly took McCarthy overboard as he attempted to reduce sail. He was caught in the folds of the sail, until the sail ripped and he was able to grab a lifeline and hang on until the crew pulled him in. He bought his f irst boat to race the Mac in 1980. McCarthy has won 10 section prizes and was elected to the Lake Michigan Sailing Hall of Fame. He is going for his 67th Mac race this year, more than any other Mac racer. And he is doing it in Gene-style, with his family on board. Gene says “to me, having family members as part of the crew is part of life. Summertime is sailing time. Sailing time is family time. Family time is spent sailing.”
Do you know the difference between a member of the CYC Old Guard and a member of the Island Goats Sailing Society ? Both have demonstrated their commitment to boating in Chicago. The f irst is one of the 25 longest members of Chicago Yacht Club and the other has done 25+ Mac races.
THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR AN ISLAND GOAT A sailor who has: - Endured over 60 days Racing the Mac - Raced at least 8,325 miles f rom Chicago to Mackinac Island - Survived sailing through 50-100 thunderstorms - Suffered through 250 on and off watch changes - Persisted through at least 25 summers For more admiration for Island Goat achievement, visit their website at IslandGoats.org

THE FIRST MAC SUBMITTED BY THE 2021 MAC COMMITTEE
Little did Joseph Myers know that when he designed the fin-keel sloops (Siren 59’6” and the Vanenna 64’) it would start into motion the beginning of the world’s most famous and longest freshwater sailing race. From the start of their construction by the Racine Boat Manufacturing Company in 1886, there was ample talk of which vessel would be the fastest. Although the races began in 1896, the race outcomes were not conclusive. The first race to Michigan City was disputed when Vanenna claimed the race and Siren protested because she had old sails that were inadequate for the race. To this day, the second race to Milwaukee is still in dispute, for the fog caused both sloops to sail off course and thus started the question, did the race ever finish? A couple of years passed until the 1898 announcement for a series of three races sponsored by the Chicago Yacht Club. Owners George Peate of Siren and W.R. Crawford of Vanenna set out to make the record straight. They agreed to a three day regatta on June 4th, 11th and 18th. Both owners engaged in much boosting and betting, and they were prepared to spend whatever it took to be ready. Behind this backdrop was the hangover from the loss of the Fisher Cup of 1883 between Chicago’s Cora and Canada’s Atlanta. This loss began a declining effect on memberships to the Chicago yachting community for close to 15 years. By 1897, there were only six members and two yachts representing the Chicago Yacht Club. A strong drive for membership in 1898 increased this number rapidly to sixty members and sixteen yachts, thus laying the groundwork for creating
new excitement and an era of racing at the Chicago Yacht Club. After three races in June of 1898, Vanenna remained undefeated and the discussion of having a very unique and challenging race emerged. In 1897, the New York Yacht Club sponsored a long distance race attracting vessels of larger sizes. The Chicago Yacht Club saw an opportunity to create its own attraction for larger vessels and renew the sport of sailing for the Chicago sailing community. Mackinac Island was a destination that was favored by many sailors, taking a multi-port route up Lake Michigan. Many Chicago Yacht Club members throughout history had houses or stayed on the island for vacations. These members conceived of a race that would challenge every sailor to face the weather, winds, storms, and seas, as well as the big question: What course do you take on a 333 mile race? And so began the first Mac Race with two sloops, Siren and Vanenna and three schooners, Hawthorne, Toxteth and Nomad. The excitement was immediate and the wagers and posturing began. Once again, Siren and Vanenna would dance with each other on the Great Lakes. After 52 hours, 17 minutes and 50 seconds Vanenna claimed her place in history as the first winner of the Race to Mackinac Island. Siren placed second, 37 minutes and 20 seconds behind her nemesis, but beat the schooner Hawthorne by 45 minutes.

THE DANCE. BY PAIGE SIMS
“Trim.” The whirl of the winch, the spin of the handle. “Good.” The sound of the waves rushing past, rapping the hull like a rhythmic drum verse; a pulse as we ride up the mountainous swell and surf down the other side, deep into its trough. “Trim.” Whoosh. Arms and hands a smear of gray as they spin around and around pulling in the ease on the sheet. “Trim!” “It’s me! I’m coming down, I’m coming down.” A flap of the chute, a snap really, as it settles back into position. Full and bright. A parachute tugging its charge down a watery path. “Trim.” The early morning sun is starting to wake. She stretches her glittery rays up above her head tickling the high clouds and winking a soulful “good morning!” to the rolling waters of Lake Michigan. The sailors pause a moment, faces angled to the east, embracing the golden warmth of the rays, drinking in the colors of the birth of a new morning. A moment later, the chute, indignant that it be ignored in the face of a new day, signals its displeasure with a loud snap as it folds into itself. Startled, the sailors return their attention to the roiling waters, the wind, the sway of their vessel. “Trim.”

A NOTE FROM THE ON THE WATER DIRECTOR BY SKIP DIEBALL
Summer is here! And what a summer we have planned. More on that in a moment. It is here that I want to thank the incredible OnThe-Water staff. Cam Borkowski started with us in January as our Marine Assets Manager and has been putting in major hours ever since ensuring our equipment is in top form. It started with the fleet of 420E’s that are used for Scholastic Sailing and then moved into the Race Committee vessels and our fleet of Sonars and Tom 28s. All of the above vessels needs some level of TLC and Cam has led an incredible charge to get them ready for member use. Summer marks the start of our annual Sailing School. This year we have another fully sold-out summer session for kids looking to learn sailing and for kids looking to make the next step into competitive racing. No matter the direction our children choose, we are 100% focused on the mission of the Chicago Yacht Club in creating life-long boating enthusiasts. Special thanks to Carla Chick for picking up the task, related to both the Sailing School and assisting with the Adult Learn to Sail. Speaking of Adult programs, you all have responded impressively. Our marquee Adult programs of Women on the Water (WOW), Sail Fast Thursdays and Crew U are all SOLD OUT. It is clear that the pandemic has us all dreaming of spending free time on the water. Ivan Sagel has increased his programing to include more Adult Learning in both Sailboats and Powerboats. With the new Sea Ray and Duffy (and don’t forget our Kayaks and Paddleboards) along with the fleet of Sonars, we have you covered when you want to enjoy a day on Lake Michigan.
For those of you that have been kicking around Belmont Harbor the last few months, you’ve likely noticed that our entire fleet of 420E’s are out every day with our High School sailors. Hector Guzman and his team of coaches helped 90 kids enjoy the cool waters and big spring breeze. Teams from New Trier, Walter Payton, Latin School, St. Ignatius, Lycee Francois and DePaul College Prep all logged great hours on the water while honing their skills. I want to congratulate the team from Latin School of Chicago for finishing 16th at the National Championship in Cleveland in early June. At press time, we are in preparation for the 2021 Sailing World Helly Hansen NOOD regatta. This event will mark our first post-pandemic regatta and Chuck Nevel leads our team with the help of our amazing Race Committee and the staff from Sailing World. It has been a difficult road preparing such an event in an ever-changing environment of restrictions, but Chuck and team are ready for a great Regatta. Of course while all this is going on, our Race to Mackinac Committee prepares in a similar fashion for the 2021 edition. Best of luck to all participants this year. As many of you have heard, Flor Cerutti joined our team in April. Flor leads our singlehanded sailors and her impact has been immediate. From stepping off the plane and arriving Day 1 at an event to help sailors, to growing our popular Optimist group, Flor has an incredible energy that will serve us well for years to come. As great as she is at coaching, you should know that she’s an Olympian as well that competed in the Beijing games. Flor and I have already talked about getting adult sailors out in singlehanded boats. So if you are willing to try something new, or dust off that boat that’s been in the garage, just know that our staff is there to help as we look to develop more ways for members to enjoy Chicago’s waterfront.
We have a team of Dock Hands that will be there to assist you at both Monroe and Belmont. Simply give them a call either on the phone or VHF and let them know you are looking to enjoy either station for a few hours or few days. We’ll accommodate you and they are happy to lend a hand to make your stay enjoyable.

A ROARING GOOD TIME ASSOCIATES COMMITTEE BY HANNAH PUSTEJOVSKY
The Associates Committee kicked off the spring boating season in style! Our Belmont Speakeasy Soiree in April was a sold-out success and brought more than 50 members and guests together in their best flapper finery, to enjoy cocktails from Highclere Castle Gin and music from Louis Pettinelli Entertainment. We finished the month off with an Associates Wine Tasting sponsored by Freixenet Mionetto, introducing Associates to the splendor of Italian wines. May brought better weather and more opportunities to get on the water. Associate committee member Robert Hann and his team won the morning session of spring Frostbiting, winning eternal bragging rights and maybe some hypothermia. As always, the Associates Committee sponsored a third Thursday happy hour, featuring specialty pizzas curated by the kitchen at Belmont and wine flights from our partner Volio Imports. The summer will be just as packed with exciting events, including the Island Dock Party on June 26th and an Associates Boat Raft Up in August. As always, we invite you to join in on the fun and meet the Committee at our next event or meeting. The Committee meets (either virtually or in-person) on the first Tuesday of every month to we plan for our next events and catch up on the latest happenings at the club. We hope to see you there!

A SEASON TO REMEMBER WOMEN ON THE WATER BY NANCY BERBERIAN
The Women’s Committee of the Chicago Yacht Club was very busy this past Spring. We concluded our WOW Wellness Series in May with a luncheon featuring Diet Coach Judy Weitzman. Judy gave numerous tips on how to improve our eating habits while still enjoying our favorite foods and with specific advice using the Club’s menus at both Belmont and Monroe. Judy answered everyone’s questions from how to get kids to eat more vegetables to controlling those late night cravings. Everyone enjoyed her valuable advice and the motivation she provided. Thanks to all the members who participated in the WOW Wellness Series this year. We had our first Create and Sip event in April – Succulents and Dinner. The ladies enjoyed a delicious Chef Larry dinner and then planted their own beautiful planter under the guidance of Sara Proctor. Sara’s passion for succulents especially made it a fun evening. And back by popular demand, Create and Sip Paint Night was held in June, taught by CYC’s very own Genevieve Boyle. The ladies learned new skills and created a masterpiece. WOW also hosted several educational programs: Lunch & Learn with Rear Admiral Shoshana Chatfield, the first woman to serve as the President of the Naval War College. And Dinner & Movie Night – featuring the award-winning documentary City at War: Chicago. Both events received rave reviews. The WOW Sonar Sailing Series kicked off its 12 week program in June. With over 50 ladies participating in sailing and dinner afterwards, it is sure to be a hit again this year. The ladies will not only improve their skills but also have a fun night out on the water with friends. Please keep reading Dock Lines and the CYC Calendar for WOW future events. All members are welcome and we look forward to seeing you at WOW events throughout the season. See you at the Porch Party on Mackinaw Island!

CHICAGO REGATTA UNITING THE BOATING COMMUNITY TO BENEFIT CHILDREN BY NANCY SNYDER AND SONJA VEILLEUX
The Chicago Regatta, presented by Wintrust, has become a fixture on our waterfront. The Sept. 11, 2021 regatta again provides the opportunity for all boaters to contribute to the well-being of Chicago-area children while celebrating the boating community that enriches our lives. While the initial shock of the global pandemic has faded for many of us and we are embracing a return to prepandemic activities, the storm isn’t through; recovery can be more daunting than crisis. The collective generosity of our waterfront community achieved a new record in 2020. Now our challenge is to do even more. The Chicago Regatta provides a fun opportunity for all boaters to support our beneficiaries while celebrating the boating community that enriches our lives.
LIGHTED BOAT PARADE ADDS AN ELEGANT FINALE An all-new sunset boat parade will welcome Chicago Yacht Club members, neighboring clubs and public safety organizations to the 2021 Chicago Regatta event lineup, benefitting the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, SOS Children’s Villages - Illinois, and the Chicago Yacht Club Foundation. Individual Power or sail boats making a donation at the SILVER medal level and corporate sponsors at the PLATINUM medal level will be invited to join an elegant and memorable sunset parade as boats decorated with white lights, flags and banners celebrating the event’s beneficiaries and sponsors pass the club in review. Slips at the Monroe Dock will be allocated first to the invited boats participating in the parade and any remaining slips will be allocated to boats on the basis of total donations. Please consider joining Ararat, owned by CYC Commodore Nick Berberian; Mirage, owned by Sonny Lisowski; Son’s Too VII, owned by Chuck Anderson; Lakehouse owned by Ed Falkenhayn and Cigany, owned by Michael Kovacs. Please contact Kurt Lentsch on the Chicago Regatta Boat Parade subcommittee for registration and go to www.chicagoregatta.com/ donate to make your silver level donation and secure your spot! Watch for more details about registering for the Chicago Regatta, the boat parade and fundraising coming soon! And keep up-to-date about everything related to this philanthropic event at www.chicagoregatta.com.
39 Blinker | Summer 2021
As in past years, the funds raised at the regatta will go to the CYC Foundation, the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital, and SOS Children’s Villages Illinois. The regatta lasts a weekend, but your impact endures. The 2021 Chicago Regatta offers sailors, boaters and spectators an opportunity to lend a hand where it is so urgently needed, while also enjoying the best of the competition and camaraderie of our waterfront community. There will be live and virtual events. On-thewater events include buoy racing for one-design fleets, a distance race and a casual race. After these daytime events, there will be DragonForce 65 radio-controlled racing at Belmont station and a lighted boat parade at Monroe Station. Boats may enter these races by completing the entry form available on Yacht Scoring, and by making a donation to the Chicago Regatta. There is no fee to enter the Chicago Regatta, but in order to be scored, participating boats make a contribution to one of our three charitable partners. Our celebration for our charities will be hosted by the Chicago Yacht Club by virtual event, to enjoy from your home, and a dinner event at Monroe Station (sized to respect current guidelines and best practices for staying healthy). Our “Sweet Home Chicago” evening event features the Sons of Chicago Band, playing electric blues and soul music for our in-person and virtual events. The regatta will continue the tradition of the virtual silent auction, featuring loads of wonderful items to bid on. The three recipients of our collective fundraising continue to need our help as we all work to recover from the devastation of recent years. The Chicago Yacht Club Foundation strives to broaden horizons for youth, disabled, and disadvantaged boaters through nautical training and activities, and supports venues that introduce people at many levels to nautical, educational and on-the-water experiences.
The University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children’s Hospital staff continue to serve some of the most vulnerable patients facing trauma, cancer, and chronic illnesses throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. The need to provide exceptional clinical care and substantial emotional support has not receded as the world begins to reopen. The unique model of foster care at SOS Children’s Villages Illinois provides safe, stable, loving homes, keeping brothers and sisters together in clusters of private, single-family homes sharing recreational and administrative facilities. The pandemic upended this model and challenged the stability that all children need to thrive. Now is no time to let up. The collective generosity of the boating and waterfront community is needed to offer safety and comfort to the Chicago area’s most vulnerable children.
Any contribution can make a difference; please consider becoming a Medal-level donor to maximize your impact. Please visit www.ChicagoRegatta.com for more information, registration, and donation opportunities.
2021 EVENT BOOSTS FUNDRAISING FUN AND COMPETITION WITH NEW LEADERBOARD FUNCTION The Chicago Regatta has an additional exciting competition: The newly added Leaderboard system allows donations from crew, family, friends and business associates to roll up under each race boat or parade boat to win great prizes. Each boat will be provided with a unique link that can be shared with others to make online donations which will accumulate under your boat’s name. The Leaderboard will continually update in real time throughout the club and online, showing the boats that have gathered the most donations. Please know that the Leaderboard competition is independent from the medal donor and sponsorship programs that have their own rewards, so donations through those programs do not count as part of the Leaderboard totals. This is a great way to take our donations for kids to the next level by bringing crew, family, friends and associates into the mix. Please give generously, spread the word, and encourage everyone to get involved in this wonderful charity competition.

CYC HOSTS SUCCESSFUL SPRING HIGH SCHOOL SAILING BY LAURA LUTTON
After missing the spring 2020 season due to the lakefront’s COVID-19 closure, Chicago Yacht Club’s high-school sailing program returned to full force in March, days after the ice exited Belmont Harbor, and ran through the warm spring days of May. At 85 sailors strong, the program featured varsity and junior varsity athletes from six area high schools, including newcomer DePaul College Prep, which turned out four sailors for its inaugural CYC season. The returning schools were Latin School of Chicago, Lycee Francais de Chicago, New Trier High School, St. Ignatius College Prep, and Walter Payton High School. Under head high-school coach Hector Guzman, CYC kicked off the season quickly, hosting daily practices, a Spring Break camp, and the regional Central Baker Qualifier, a team-racing event. Among CYC’s teams, Latin, St. Ignatius and Walter Payton all qualified for the MISSA Baker finals in Minnesota, but did not advance. In fleet racing, the same teams—plus New Trier—qualified for the MISSA Mallory Qualifier in Ohio in mid-May, with Latin advancing to the finals in early June. St. Ignatius’ finish at the Mallory Qualifier earned the team a berth at the Phebe Corckran King Regatta in Annapolis, where the Wolfpack finished third. Singlehanded sailors from CYC’s high school program also fared well this spring, sweeping all divisions at the MISSA Singlehanded Championship in April. Peter Barnard (St. Ignatius) won the radial division, while Jack Baldwin (St. Ignatius) won in the full rig. Christian Prendergast (Latin) finished first in the 4.7 group. In addition to supporting CYC sailors at regional and national qualifiers, the club also hosted a series of regattas aimed at the high schools’ junior-varsity sailors. The four Tier 3 events were many JV sailors’ first turns at a regatta. CYC finished the high-school season in J/88s rather than their usual 420e boats. John Leahey, chair of CYC’s Junior Activities Committee, coordinated a Memorial Day J/88 regatta to give the high-school sailors a big-boat racing experience. Each high school was assigned one or two J/88s and worked with the boats’ owners to learn how to rig, fly and jibe an a-symmetrical spinnaker and adjust their tactics for a larger craft. The race was a muchappreciated capstone to a successful season.

RACE COMMITTEE INNOVATES TO GO GREEN BY JENNIFER STEFFLER
Several years ago, CYC started striving to achieve Platinum status in the Sailors for the Sea Clean Regatta program. While out on the water, I’ve lost count of the number of balloons, empty plastic bottles and bags, and styrofoam pieces I’ve “rescued” from the lake. The occasional recovery of a red (or sometimes faded to pink) Mount Gay hat counts as MOB practice rather than garbage pickup. One of the requirements for being certified as a Clean Regatta is promoting “Green Boating” practices. One practice is to reduce fuel usage by employing MarkSetBots. This year CYC leased three MarkSetBots. These self-propelled Bots use multi-directional, electric trolling motors and GPS technology to set and adjust marks on a race course. Using any cellular device, the Bots can be sent to a specific location based on where the user currently is (i.e., 120 o @ 1.0 nm from the signal boat). One of our Bots has a wind instrument on it, so it continuously records and plots the wind direction in the App. RC can easily see the wind trends, which makes setting the course faster and helps us to provide higher quality races for the competitors. If you’re a boat driver, don’t let the advertisements fool you! We still need you! These Bots are amazing and are changing the way we run races, but they aren’t perfect. While we can set a course for them to follow, they have no ability to avoid obstructions or other vessels. To prevent collisions, we tow them out to the race course, and the bots still require an operator to monitor them during a race. Fair warning, while sailors know they should always try to avoid hitting a mark, be extra careful with the Bots… they might just “hit back” as they return to station!

CYC FOR TEAM ROBLE SHEA BY EILEEN O’NEILL GIOIELLI
When the Tokyo games were postponed last summer, while not surprising, athletes and fans alike were gutted. Fast forward to this year and the anticipation of the Tokyo 202One Games has been wrought with hesitation from the Japanese government. They’ve established the strictest of COVID guidelines, which includes the toughest component, no fans. So at Chicago Yacht Club, we knew we had to find a way to support our home team, Roble Shea. Over the years we’ve watched Stephanie Roble and Maggie Shea hone their craft on the 49erFX and become an absolute force on the water. The team has made Miami their home in the last year, training as much as possible and preparing themselves for the Games. With all the restrictions, Team USA is encouraging all athletes to not have send off parties and continue to limit interactions. So we asked ourselves, how can we celebrate this team without physically having them in Chicago? Zoom was an obvious answer, but there needed to be additional elements to make the night extra special and really give these women a proper send off. So with Roble Shea appearing remotely, we (safely) filled Belmont Station with family, friends and the CYC community to celebrate where they’ve been and support their home stretch. We wanted folks coming to get excited about seeing how hard these women have worked throughout their journey, and how it’s paid off. Part of the strategy was to document their journey. We displayed photos of the team with CYC members through the years and as youth sailors. We gathered all the red, white, and blue decor we could find and made it a party. The cherry on top was a 7 foot tall cardboard cut out we had made of the team. It was them on the podium, hand in hand with arms raised wearing their silver medals at the Pan American Games. Selfies were strongly encouraged. With the Opening Ceremony less than 100 days out, it was imperative to also give attendees a sense of what being an Olympic sailor means and requires. Namely, funds. Steph and Maggie gave a run down of what it’s been like this last year, and relayed what they expect in the coming months. The ladies gave a great presentation and spoke candidly about what it costs to meet their goals. Through the wonderful support and generosity of attendees, Chicago Yacht Club raised over $45K for the team. We couldn’t be more proud to watch these ladies shine in Tokyo.

BELMONT DANCES THROUGH PANDEMIC BY MICHAEL ESPOSITO
Even as the Belmont clubhouse approaches the end of its service, it’s still adapting to new purposes. Last winter, Belmont Station took aboard some castaways, 10 contemporary dancers ages 18 to 28, who spent their time aboard creating a performance. Founded by former Hubbard Street 2 director and choreographer Terence Marling, the dance company called COMMON, got turned out of their normal creative space, because the facility shuttered due to the pandemic. Marling, his choreographers and dancers found supporters in then-general manager Dwight Jenson, and among Chicago Yacht Club members who sponsored their rental of Belmont to continue creating (in rotating small groups to ensure safe distancing). “Working at Belmont Harbor was integral to continuing COMMON conservatory’s year-long research and performance project,” Marling said. “It was a necessary step for the growth of the individual artists. Through the tough winter pandemic months, Belmont Harbor became a place where individual connections were made that strengthened our group of artists as a collective.” The result of COMMON’s creativity was “Chronicle,” a performance filmed live at Illinois Wesleyan University, since in-person event restrictions remained in place, and which began streaming on Vimeo June 5. Nearly every dance in the show owes part of its creation to time aboard Belmont. Choreographer Alysia Johnson worked with COMMON’s dancers to create three pieces entirely in what members usually know as Belmont’s dining room. For more information about COMMON, please visit www.commondance.com.
