What’s that I see out the window? Is it – no it couldn’t be – actual sunshine? Yes, it is true. Finally Sheffield has played host to summer. With the newfound love of the city this encourages, it’s irresistible not to be sunbathing in the Peace Gardens, lazily strolling down Division Street or enjoying a casual tipple on Ecclesall Road. And what better accompaniment than the latest copy of Chic Lifestyle Magazine?

What’sOn Jimmy Carr
Sheffield City Hall Friday 5th July Jimmy’s back with a brand new show and a whole host of new jokes to boot. The new show, entitled “Gagging Order”, is purely built around Jimmy’s one liners, sarcastic sense of humour and excellently precise timing. The range of scope in the show varies from the massively funny to the insanely risky. Expect anything and everything from rude to obscene but always devastatingly hilarious. We simply can’t wait for this one! Jimmy has been hugely successful in the UK and has sold over a million DVDs of his great tours. Probably best known as a presenter on comedy quiz shows such as “8 Out Of 10 Cats”, Jimmy’s raw, uncut talent is best appreciated in his live stand-up shows.

The Who
Motorpoint Arena Sheffield Tuesday 18th June Legendary rock band The Who will be in Sheffield this month for one night only! This is part of the band’s UK tour, which followed a seriously successful North American tour quoted by the Boston Telegram as “a rock ‘n’ roll lover’s dream come true”. With recommendations like that how can we resist? As one of the most influential and popular bands of the 1970s, The Who have had a wide spanning musical history including their stunning rock operas “Quadrophenia” and “Tommy”. Founded in 1964 the band took a unique style to conventional rhythm and blues music and challenged the possibilities of live performance by stretching the boundaries with each live show. The film version of Quadrophenia starred an

array of familiar faces such as Sting, Lesley Ash and Trevor Laird. The current concert version of Quadrophenia, directed by Rodger Daltrey himself, is yet another incarnation of the original, using music from the album set against the backdrop of powerful imagery on an array of massive screens, which replaces the narrative previously used in stage versions. The tour features founding members of The Who, Rodger Daltrey and Pete Townshend, joined by Zak Starkey on drums, Pino Palladino on bass, Simon Townshend on guitar, John Corey on keyboard, Loren Gold on keyboard and Frank Simes as musical director and on keyboard and backing vocals. The reimagined version of a classic will be taking to the stage of the Motorpoint Arena on Tuesday 18th June. For tickets visit www.motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk
Rod Stewart
Motorpoint Arena Sheffield Sunday 23rd June The Grammy Award winning Rod Stewart starts yet another European tour this month following his hugely successful 2010 tour. The Live The Life tour will encompass Rod’s top hits such as “Maggie May”, “Baby Jane”, “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy” and “The First Cut Is the Deepest”, along with some new material from his recently recorded album, “Time”, which features 12 original tracks. Rod Stewart’s career is now in its fifth decade, in which time he has sold over 100 million records and had a total of 62 hit singles. Moya (Emily Andrews) will be supporting the show with her mix of electricsoul vocals and melodic pop music. For tickets visit www.motorpontarenasheffield.co.uk

When a thirteen year old girl enters a competition to win a dream holiday to anywhere in the world for her and her family she is presented with the task of describing her family.
The only problem is, describing her family is no simple feat. Well, she can’t exactly say her family is on the verge of splitting up can she? So, instead, she does what any rational person would do in her situation: she lies. The only way to save the family is to choose a destination which will resolve all their problems, but where could that be? And will this dream holiday turn in to a complete nightmare? Chic Magazine Investigates
The Full Owlerton Experience
A
fter night on night of going to the same clubs, seeing the same people and drinking the same drinks I felt it was time for a change in lifestyle. I needed to revamp my weekend and try something new. That’s why last Saturday night a friend and I headed down to Owlerton Greyhound Stadium for something a little bit different: The Full Owlerton Experience.
Ladies Day
at Owlerton Greyhound Stadium
T
his July ladies have the floor at the Owlerton Greyhound Stadium for a day of glitz and glamour and, of course, betting! The annual Ladies Day will be held on Tuesday 2nd July and is a chance for ladies to enjoy the luxury of fine dining, a glass of bubbly and a bet, all in aid of Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity.
Unsurprisingly, when we arrived the stadium was buzzing! The place was absolutely heaving with people who’d obviously had the same idea and to say the atmosphere was lively would be an extreme understatement. Nevertheless, we were seen to very quickly and seated with a fantastic view overlooking the tracks. “Yorkshire pudding drizzled in relish gravy.” Next it was time for a bet and Lady Luck was on my side because I won six of my bets, meaning that the night had paid for itself. I had my eyes on the jackpot, though; a game in which you pick six winners in six designated races and if they all come in you win the jackpot. The jackpot rolls over when it’s not won. On Saturday it was set at £8,000 and I’ve been told that at times it has peaked at over £100,000. Unfortunately my luck didn’t stretch as far as to let me win that one, but there’s always next time!
“Fantastic view overlooking the tracks.” Then came my favourite part of the night: the food. We treated ourselves to a delicious three course meal at the stadium. Both my friend and I opted for the famous Yorkshire pudding starter drizzled in Henderson’s Relish Gravy, and we could certainly see what all the fuss is about. For the main course I had Chicken Breast, Thyme with Cranberry Stuffing and Bubble and Squeak, whilst my friend had the Sea Bass Fillet on Buttered Spring Onion Mash, Crayfish and Chardonnay Velouté. By the end of the second course we were completely stuffed; the helpings are very generous! Somehow, we still had room for dessert. I had the to-die-for sticky toffee pudding and my friend opted for the deviously light Fruit Crumble.
“Ladies Day is a fantastic event for friends, families and colleagues to enjoy this summer. It is a highly regarded event in our calendar and is now in its tenth year. We are in fact the only greyhound stadium in the country which holds an annual Ladies Day event”, said John Gilburn, Managing Director of Owlerton Greyhound Stadium. The day will start at 6pm with drinks at reception, followed by a three course meal. The day will also include a raffle, auction, best dressed competition and packages including the £15 Prosecco Package. “The money will go towards the £1.5 million we need as part of our Do Your Bit campaign that is raising money for our new Cancer Research and Treatment Suite within Weston Park Hospital”, said Catherine Rhone, senior fundraiser for Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity. To book your tickets call the stadium on 0114 234 3074 or visit www.owlertonstadium.co.uk
“I won six of my bets!” We left the stadium and walked the 100 yards to Napoleons Casino to continue our betting spree. There we continued our night with drinks at the roulette table to complete the full experience. The night was a great success and I would recommend it to anyone who’s looking for a night out with a twist! I know we’ll certainly be going back again soon.

Interview with
MarkOwen A
fter the early years of Take That’s massive popularity with screaming fans, the break up and more recent make up, Mark Owen has become a household name. Now Mark has broken away from the bosom of his bros in the band and has released his fourth studio album, The Art of Doing Nothing, released 10th June. We caught up with him to discover what to expect from his solo sound, plans for the future and life on his own. How does it compare and differ to your past albums – I know you’ve said it was more of a “project” than an album, but does it feel like it’s a natural progression in the change of sound from what you’ve done previously? Finding the right sound for the record was a bit of a journey to be honest. The last record I did with Take That, Progress with Stuart Price, was such a distinct sound that I was really, really proud of and loved, and I loved Stuarts’s sound on the record. But I had to almost go back in some ways to 2005 and kind of have a little look at where I’d left with How The Mighty Fall, and the sound that was there, and what I was doing back then - because I’ve been involved obviously with three records in between and it had been a while. I knew we were going to be playing some of the old songs as well, I wanted to be able to play some songs from that record, and the records before, and it not to sound too far away. So finding the right sound that I felt worked in both worlds was quite important, and a little bit of a challenge as well really, but I think we managed to do it. So it’s your first solo album since Take That reunited, has the second chapter of the band inspired the album at all? It’s funny because even when I’m trying to let things evolve, naturally it kind of takes shape. I love the
10
ChicLifestyleMagazine | Issue52
band, and I love being a part of Take That, but I kind of hear them. When I’m going, “I’m just going to see how things naturally evolve”, and you start doing that thing in the back of your mind and you hear Rob going, “I wouldn’t do that”, and Howard is going, “No I wouldn’t do that either, Rob”, and I’m like, “Will you guys just shut up for two minutes while I just try and do something on me own?!”. And then Gaz goes, “Oh, he’s getting grumpy now he just wants to do it on his own”, so I kind of hear their voices. I guess you do and you can probably hear your mates, you know. When I’m doing something I go, “What would Jay say there?” and it’s
a nice thing, I guess that in a way it’s inspiration and a part of it, even when they’re not actually in the room because you know, I’ve known them for 20 years plus. They’re a part of what I do anyway. So has it been nice to be able to experiment on your own a little bit? After so many years since your last album, has it been nice to take the driving seat again?
Do you know what, I haven’t really thought that much about it. For the last few years I’ve been doing, I guess, a record every couple of years counting Take That. And I kind of walk this path where I just try and write songs. I don’t really know what else to do really so I try and write songs and carry on doing that kind of thing. In the nicest way, it’s like they kind of all went off on holiday. Like Gaz has gone and done the X Factor, Rob’s done his record, Jay’s gone over there and Howard’s gone that way and I feel like I have to walk the same path really in many ways; I’m hoping they’ll come back next year and get back in the car. But I’m kind of just driving the bus around you know, I need to go and pick them all up soon. So, you’re going to be heading off on tour on the 9th, are you excited to be going out by yourself again? What can fans expect from the show? Well we’re in rehearsals at the moment, and I’m trying to get an atmosphere and that’s what I’m hoping to be able to capture really, a really great atmosphere. Obviously when you do the Take That shows, there’s 60ft robotic men, and things like that with you, which I can’t fit into a lot of the venues I’m playing, so I can’t bring that with me. The word that they normally use, that I see written, is an “intimate” vibe. But that word, just makes me feel like, “Oh God I sound about 70”. I mean I’m going to be closer to the audience so I guess it is more intimate. But if we can get a great atmosphere and the songs sound great, and they can get into the mood of the show, and enjoy it - I guess you want them to go home and go “Oh that was worth buying a ticket to”.

emember going out for a drink in a plume of smoke and ending the night reeking of cigarettes? Those days seem almost unimaginable now for non-smokers after the smoking ban came into play, but for smokers wanting to quit for health or social reasons, what are the options?
Meersbrook, plus a new store in Chesterfield. The rise in popularity is predominantly due to the health benefits of e-cigarettes, compared with standard cigarettes. Although still containing nicotine, e-cigarettes are inhaled through a water vapour, powered by an internal battery.
The answer is electronic cigarettes. Having generated up to $250 million in the USA alone, the trend is fast becoming a similar success in the UK. The amount of e-cigarettes users in the UK has more than doubled from 8% to 22% between 2010 and 2012, according to research from the British health charity, ‘Action on Smoking and Health’, with numbers continuously rising.
Not all e-cigarettes are tested and contain untested products which could cause harm, however. Thus a new regulating body has been founded to ensure that e-cigarettes are exactly what they say in the tin. The Electronic Cigarette Industry (ECITA) has created the Industry Standard of Excellence (ISE), which covers the legal requirements of electronic cigarettes, plus ensures that the products are safe to use.
Reflecting the growing trend of using e-cigarettes is Sheffield-founded company, Mirage Cigarettes. The company, established by Craig Newbold, currently has stores at Archer Road, Manor Top, Hillsborough, Rotherham and Chesterfield Road,
Craig is a founding member of ECITA, and Mirage cigarettes are thoroughly tested and safe to use, a reassurance which is proven to appeal to customers if their growing number of shops is anything to go by. Although the number of retailers of e-cigarettes
is on the rise, customers appreciate that purchasing from a reliable and safe source is definitely the best option.

O
nce again, for one weekend only, Sheffield’s steely streets will be transformed into a festival ground of massive proportions with over 70 venues throughout the city, hosting hundreds of artists. Now in its fifth year, Tramlines, our city’s very own summer time fest, is back again and this time it’s bigger! Last year over 80,000 people attended over the three day extravaganza that was Tramlines 2012 and saw acts such as Miss Dynamite, Rootz Manuva and Toddla T. This year the event promises to be even better, with Toddla T returning to bring a host of fantastic dance music to the festival stages. One of this year’s most exciting acts though, has to be Lianne La Havas; the alternative folk inspired songstress who has taken the UK by storm. She will be joined by a host of other great names including

Dutch Uncles, New Young Pony Club and The Selecter. This year has become ever more interactive, inviting so-called “tramliners” to get involved by helping to choose the official festival ale, entering competitions to win festival tickets and even listening to Tramlines 2013’s very own Spotify playlist. Unlike other years, there’ll be a small fee for festival goers this year at £6 per day ticket, which is still great value for money and a small price to pay to see some of the best names in music take to the stage. Here at Chic we can’t wait to get that festival feeling, so we’ve put together some snippets of info along with some great interviews to whet your Tramlines appetite. Bon appetit!

e got a chance to catch up and have a little chat with Pauline Black, lead singer for legendary 2-tone band, The Selecter, who are gracing the Steel City with their talent next month when they perform a headline set at Tramlines.
What can fans expect from the set?
Selecter fans can expect our usual high energy set of 2-tone music from past and present albums, and of course all the hits: ‘On My Radio’, ‘Too Much Pressure’, ‘Missing Words’, ‘Three Minute Hero’ and ‘James Bond’.
TheInvisible
M
any great bands are playing at Tramlines Festival this year, some you may not have heard of because they’re new to the music business, and some which have been making music for years. A band that has been heavily involved in the growth of the music industry is The Invisible, with Dave Okumu as the singer and guitarist, Tom Herbert as bassist and synthesizer and Leo Taylor on drums. We talked to Leo about the kind of music the band produces, who their biggest influences have been and even how they felt working with big names like Adele.
How would you describe your music to our readers?
Well, we came up with the term ‘genre-defying space pop’, but that was for our first record. I think we’ve kind of moved on from there [laughs]. Loosely, I guess we’re interested in pop music within a kind of unconventional way. We usually say we’re experimental pop which is quite a broad term. Genre-defying space pop still fits the bill though. I mean, its emotional, dance-tinged music.
Your tracks sound like they could appeal to a lot of people.
Yeah, I think so. I think there are things in the music that hopefully speak to everyone.
Who would you say have been your biggest influences?
We have many influences, a lot of African music like King Sunny Adé and Thomas Mapfumo, but many American musicians like Prince and dance music; from across the globe. Dave (the singer and guitarist) writes in a very down-to-earth way and I think there’s a very Radiohead theme to the music, there’s a deep and emotional thing going on.
The Foals were aware of us, or aware of the album, before the Mercury Prize happened and we were linked to them through our manager who did their PR a while ago, and we’ve had an ongoing relationship with them ever since. We’ve even done a tour with them for their current album. As for Hot Chip, I’m in another band called Gramme and that relationship spanned from a long time ago. I played in Hot Chip for a while before The Invisible’s first record came out. So there’s a very deep relationship there with Hot Chip as well. They are possibly the two nicest bands out there and what’s more is that me, Dave and Tom are all involved in lots of other projects.
Continuing on from that Leo, you yourself have contributed to other artists’ albums such as Kate Nash, Jessie Ware and Adele. They are huge household names, so how was it working with them?
Lianne LeHavas and David Rodigan.
Tramlines is such a unique Sheffield festival; have you played in Sheffield before and what would you say, as an artist, is your favourite thing about the Steel City?
We have played in Sheffield a number of times at various festivals and venues. When we first started back in 1979 there used to be an excellent little venue - Sheffield Limit Club. We have very fond memories of that club. We used to do matinee shows for young fans that couldn’t get into the evening show. Everybody seemed very supportive of the band in Sheffield.
What’s coming up for you and The Selecter in the second half of 2013?
We are doing a number of UK and European festivals over the summer months, before touring USA/ Canada in Sept & Oct 2013. Check out our website www.theselecter.net for all concert info.
Thank you! Yeah, it’s been an amazing couple of years on that level. That side of my career, and Tom’s as well, we both did the Bond theme tune (Skyfall) with Adele and I just thought, ‘Okay, we can relax now’.
Like ‘you’ve made it’, that’s massive!
It’s quite big, yeah. Dave is also now a bit of a producer, he did Jessie Ware’s record which I think has gone gold in a few countries and I played drums on some of the singles. There have been some lovely things happening. We were happy to be able to do that. We’ve always maintained a kind of adventurous outlook on music. We like to be involved in different things, different projects.
Who would you love to work with in the future? You’ve already worked with such big names.
Yeah, that was for the first album but no, we really didn’t expect it at all! It did happen though and it took us by surprise. We kind of embraced it and enjoyed it. It was an amazing thing and I guess when you make a record, you never intend for it to be nominated for anything, you just make the record. It was lovely that it received attention on that level. The Mercury is such a world-renowned award that it opened up a lot of doors for us actually.
It’s crazy because one of my heroes has come along and I’ve managed to work with her and Dave is also working with her at the moment. I think he’s working with her for her next record and that’s Grace Jones. I was very fortunate to play with her last year at Lovebox Festival. I’d love to work with her again, that’d be amazing. It’d be quite an experience. Who else? Wow, the list goes on. There are people in America who we’d love to connect with. I think Dave would like to work with Prince which would be good. Who knows? I mean, I did actually meet Chris Frantz from Talking Heads who is possibly one of my ultimate heroes in terms of bands that I love. Maybe we’ll get to collaborate with them one day.
You’ve also supported major bands like Foals and Hot Chip. What was that like?
We look forward to seeing you at Tramlines!
You got nominated for the Mercury Prize and were the critics’ choice for iTunes’ album of the year, which is amazing. Did you expect that to happen?
Aside from your own set, who are you most excited to see performing at Tramlines this year?

them feel great.
The name comes from when I was younger. I spent the first few years of my life over in Australia ‘cause my mum and dad fell in love over there and all that stuff. Whenever we used to go round the harbour they used to just plod my chubby self down in front of this busker who used to play half full wine bottles like a drum kit. Anyway, his name was Catfish the Bottleman and I used to absolutely love him!
What are your musical inspirations?
What do you enjoy most about playing live?
Can you describe your sound in three words?
All kinds of things really, my best friend Chuddy is our roadie but whilst we’re out on the road he gets up to un-writeable things! Honestly, he lives the life of an absolute whack-job! Every single night he comes back with some chaotic story, so I base a lot of my songwriting round him.
Explosive, wet and slippery.
How did you meet Dr Bob?
Dr Bob was a weird one. We were at a friend’s party one night and we all had a pretty big night. I think it was his birthday or something in this big garden he had. Towards the end of the night we found the Doc (who we didn’t even know at the time) naked as the day he was born, passed out in the garden! We thought he was dead! We kind of got him round but he had no clue what had happened to him. We ended up taking him to a bedroom in this lad’s house and we all just fell asleep in there. [In the morning the Doc was still naked!] So after that, we asked him to
We’re all kind of really into our older stuff like Van Morrison and Bills, people like Elvis and Mark Knofler. I’m kind of more into lyrics than music so I’d say my inspirations come from people like Mike Skinner and Stephen Fretwell. I really like Eels’ lyrics too. Just like really honest, humorous, bold lyrics.
What influences your lyrics?
How long have you been together as a band?
It’s either two or three years this August. We’ve basically been living in our van since the start. We really, really wanted to be a live band, we were never interested in selling albums or getting famous, we just wanted to make people feel something when they saw us live. We wanted people to come away from shows and have witnessed something that made
Dutch Uncles M anchester Indie outfit Dutch Uncles will be playing the Devonshire Green on Saturday 20th June as part of this year’s Tramlines Festival. We spoke to the lead vocalist and pianist, Duncan Wallis, to find out a little more about the pop-inspired quintet.
What influences your music?
It’s quite hard to pick out direct influences in our music usually, although recent single “Flexxin’” does sound a fair bit like Prince on Purpose. I guess Steve Reich and his use of mallet instruments has been an influence overall, especially the last album.
Who would you love to support on stage? Paramore.
Describe your new album, “Out Of Touch In The Wild”?
A studio experiment to be listened to with pop ears.
Describe your sound in three words? Ooh - duelling xylophones!
What’s on your iPod right now? Sony Discman you mean, surely?

Is this the first time you’re playing Sheffield?
Nope. But we’ve only played a few times because the journey over the Snakes Pass in the van makes us really sick.
What can we expect from the Tramlines performance?
Handclaps and a seven minute cover of Slave to the Rhythm by Grace Jones.
The feeling of trying to blow people away; people you’ve never met before, people who’ve travelled miles to see you.
Is this your first time in Sheffield?
No. Sheffield’s like our second home! From our first ever gig there, Sheffield has always taken us in, the people, the promoters, everyone. We count ourselves really, really lucky. We’re totally in love with Sheffield and I mean that. Like, we fancy all your women and want all your men to be our best men at our weddings. We want your kids, Sheffield.
Are you excited about playing Tramlines? Yeah, we can’t wait! We did it last year in this little pub and it was absolutely rammed, a proper sweatbox! We loved it man! But this year is going to be a bit bigger, I think.
What can we expect from your Tramlines performance? Lots of sweat, an onstage sex show and a human sacrifice.

After spending a number of years collecting G Plan furniture and a stunning collection of vintage classics, the couple knew that it was time to get a shop to sell and display all the pieces they’ve collected! Kid Acne Artist
From Malawi to Sheffield to The World
F
rom the streets of the Steel City to Vienna and Rome, it seems you can’t go anywhere without running into some artwork by the prolific and original street artist Kid Acne. He’s come a long way from the spotty teenager with a spray can, to having his work featured by major brands and working on a series of pilot animations, Zebra Face, for Channel 4. At Chic we spoke to the guy himself about his work, childhood and inspirations. Having, in his own words, drawn for as long as he can remember Kid Acne took his interesting name by combining the New York graffiti writers styled, ‘Kid’ with the self-deprecating and, ultimately, British sounding ‘Acne’. The name has stuck with him for around 20 years now and has become as much a part of his identity as his work which can be seen in various locations around the world, not least in Sheffield. “Most of my work is ephemeral so I don’t really know what’s currently out there. I did get an email from a friend recently to say he stumbled across one of my paintings in São Paulo when he took the bus in the wrong direction, so that’s been there a while. I think I still have paintings running in London, Vienna, Rome and Munich - but nothing lasts forever”. says Kid Acne who began drawing comic strips as a child along with his brother featuring the pair as superheroes. At the age of around eight or nine Kid Acne committed his first ever act of street art. “I’d seen the Street Artists doing chalk drawings in Leicester so I decided to do the same. I stole some chalk from the teacher at lunchtime and drew on the playground walls and floor. I got into trouble and was told to clean it off. A few years later I started using spray paint.” This would be the start of a lifelong career in drawing and street arts.
Kid Acne was born in Malawi, but grew up in the East Midlands in “a small market town that resembled something out of a Shane Meadows film.” His formative years in that setting provided scope and inform some of his artwork, particularly that depicting warrior women and tribal scenes. “Without getting too Grayson Perry about it, I grew up in a single parent family and have always been inspired by the African tribal imagery I saw growing up. The idea of painting strong female warriors is second nature really. There was no great plan. Ultimately, I just wanted to present an alternative to the B-Boy characters that dominated the graffiti scene at the time.” he says when asked about the tribal art generic of his work. It’s not only his home life that influences Kid Acnes work; he is also inspired by artists in his field. “I love seeing work by artists who just churn it out with no regard for fashion or trends. With so much documentation and accessibility these days, there’s become a real homogenised aesthetic. Everyone’s doing cut-and-shut versions of everyone else. When I find individuals who work outside of all of that, I feel inspired.” he says. There is a lot more to Kid Acne’s repertoire than mere street art. He has previously worked with a host of DJs on various projects and over the last 18 months he has been working on a series of pilots for the animation series, Zebra Face, which will be broadcast on Channel 4. “The characters’ voices are provided by the likes of Roots Manuva and Jarvis Cocker - so it’s been a really fun project to work on, despite it taking us yonks to complete”. The character of Zebra face first appeared in a n fanzine in 1995 and has since gained such popularity that Channel 4 commissioned pilots for a TV series. If all goes well we will be seeing Kid Acne’s work on our screens very soon!
Kid Acne Q&A What inspires your art?
It can be anything really, from a Google image search to a conversation in the pub. I’ve always kept a sketchbook, so I make notes of all this stuff and refer back to it whenever I get stuck. A simple doodle can inform a whole body of work, which can last for years sometimes.
What’s your favourite location in Sheffield? My studio.
What’s your favourite band at the moment?
My brother’s band Chips for the Poor have been doing gigs with Sleaford Mods - I downloaded their album recently and couldn’t stop listening to it. More locally, I really like Best Friends. They remind me of Black Lips, who I also really like. But for all-time favourites, I’d have to say the likes of De La Soul, New Kingdom and Beastie Boys.
What’s your favourite drink? Council Pop.

est known as a founding member of new wave band Heaven 17, Martyn Ware has truly made his mark on British pop culture, and still keeps making said mark to this day. This month we got to sit him down for a chat about his latest project, The British Electric Foundation’s Dark (Music of Quality and Distinction Volume Three).
Can you start by telling us a little bit about how the Dark Project came to be and how you got involved?
ChapelClub
C
hapel Club are a London five piece that makes (broadly speaking) electro pop. It’s not very good though. Remember Empire of the Sun and The Avalanches? This is a bit like them, but more rubbish. Toy drum sounds, effect laden guitars, left over synths and lots of wistful high pitched lyrics combine to make something utterly without point. It might be a matter of context though; I’m sure that on a sunny day in B&Q this probably rocks. I’m not in B&Q though; I’m not even drunk. The weird thing about Chapel Club is that there’s
Good Together
a lot of hard work and clever production on show here, it just rings out in a tinny wisp that makes you think it’s an album of ringtone covers. There’s really nothing to get excited about here, you’d be better off going to watch The Apprentice or listen to The Rapture, who are loads better. To make up your own mind, go to YouTube and search their song “Sleep Alone”, and if you like it, you’re in luck, because there are ten more identical sounding songs waiting for you on their album! Chapel Club don’t matter, and that’s all there is to say about this rather pedestrian record.
It was my idea. Well, in 1981, before you were born, I did Volume One of this series, and the intention was to do one every so often; it’s an occasional series of albums, usually with a theme of some description. The current one is really based on the idea of creating darker electronic versions of previously happy pop songs.
The project is a collective effort from several distinguished artists. Which were you most excited to work with and what did they bring to the table?
I’ve always been friends with Boy George; I’ve always been an admirer of his writing and of his voice and it came as a bit of a surprise when his voice had changed quite a lot. His voice has matured as well; it’s a different beast now. Originally he came into the studio to do ‘Makeup’, that was his idea, the song. I happened to have a backing track; it just came to me, that maybe George might fancy having a go at this. That’s the track that’s really attracted most attention.
For those of our readers who know nothing about the project, can you sum up what it’s about and they can expect?
JohnnyHatesJazz
F
or the younger readers, Johnny Hates Jazz are an eighties band. They aren’t very fashionable, so there are hipster points to be had for preferring them to Duran Duran; go fill your boots. Their big song was “Shattered Dreams” which is worth a Google as it’s not bad at all. It’s no Level 42, but it’s not bad. Well, they’re back! And they also have bad backs, so everything’s a little bit slower now. “Magnetized” is the lead single and the album title, and sets out the JHJ plan pretty quickly. Auto tuned rhyming dictionary couplets sat nearby to overly polite synth tracks form the landscape of this record. Gary Barlow probably really rates this album, and that should tell you all you need to know.
22
ChicLifestyleMagazine | Issue52
It’s better than the records from some young bands so I can’t be too sniffy and it’s clearly not a manifesto for anything other than dinner parties. This is the sound of two middle aged men trying to rewrite the classics and they sound happy so I wish them well. “I used to be strong, strong like a tree”, goes one of their lines, and it’s a real shame that the lyrics are this bad because you could accept the fairly dated sounds if there was a touch of bite to the words. I’d like some classic sounding songs giving me a very bitter weltanschauung, that sounds like a laugh but I need to look elsewhere. JHJ? CBA.
What they can expect from this is quite filmic stuff, sometimes a little bit stalker-like, sometimes a little bit David Lynch; certainly the intention wasn’t to make easy listening, and it’s the opposite of easy listening. It demands a certain amount of belief and participation from the listener, which will be rewarded. A lot of effort and love and organisation and all of the above have gone into this project. It’s taken two years.
What do you hope to achieve by participating with the dark project and what do you hope it adds to the current British music scene?
It’s a bit presumptuous of me to think it would add anything. I think if there’s anything that this majors on, it’s the beauty of the human voice, and real attention to arrangement and the melodies and harmony at the expense of the relentless beat driven music that seems to be the only way forward nowadays. Martyn comes to Sheffield’s O2 Academy at part of ‘B.E.F. Music of Quality and Distinction Live’ on 4th October. For tickets visit: www.o2academysheffield.co.uk.

The1975
Interview With
M
atthew Healy sits, composed and calm, in the depths of his tour bus, dubbed the “blue bus”. He speaks in a relaxed tone, filled with confidence and a philosophical mind set. “Do you mind if I smoke?” he asks whilst we stutter words summing up to, “No, of course”. The experience is surreal and Matthew is leading the show. “We made a decision that we were ready and we wanted to put out a record in 2012. As soon as we made that decision and put that record out it was almost as if someone went, ‘Yeah alright’.” Matthew Healy, lead singer of The 1975, is by no means nonchalant about the band’s recent success but he speaks with the air of someone who is completely at ease with the attention. After being together for over ten years and releasing music under a whole host of names, the band finally settled on the name The 1975 and released their first EP under the name, “Facedown”. Following that, the single “Chocolate” reached number 19 in the UK chart.
How have you found the transition to success?
We’ve found a lot of solace in our relationships with one another. So many elements of our life that were initially familiar to us now have been amplified in such a way that we don’t really know what it’s like. The band being so established in the UK now has knocked us off our feet.
Are you enjoying your new found fame? Yes. All the things that you talk about being pipe
dreams are all happening now, this year. It surpasses being excited; we don’t know what’s going on.
How did you guys meet?
[We met] in school. It started out like there was this girl in my form who was going out with a guy in the year above, Adam Hann. And he came up to me and said do I want to play drums in his band because there’s this thing that goes on at the Macclesfield Senior Citizen Hall where they let kids in to do a gig. So I was like, alright. Me on drums didn’t work, so then we found George [Daniel] who’s the only kid who can play drums, he’s like the weirdest kid ever. That worked and that was ten years ago.
Has knowing each other from such an early age made it easier to create as a band?
I think there’s a lot of coherency in our music and our band. I think me and the other guys worked out that there’s like a week over the past seven years where we haven’t seen each other. It’s kind of like a relationship.
You write the lyrics for The 1975 yourself. What inspires your lyrics?
(After a long pause) My life. Just like a romanticised version of my life. I think you always live with the idea that you’re different or at least people like me live with that thought. And it’s not an arrogance; it’s just a kind of interest in yourself. I think I’ve been quoted on saying that Baudelaire is an inspiration because of that kind of portrait of a modern life. I like lyricists like Jarvis Cocker from Pulp; [who
write] those kind of very self-aware and very culturally aware lyrics, which are sometimes very snide and very crass. Lyrically it’s very personal; it’s so personal that it’s open to interpretation. Once you’ve written a song it doesn’t really belong to you anymore.
Sure. It’s almost a different entity when other people receive it.
Exactly. And that’s what art is, it’s subjective. The point of it is subjectivity. So to try and dictate how somebody is exposed to your art is tedious. The reason people consume art is because they want to do it, so they’re only going to do it in the way they want to.
Did you grow up listening to a lot of music then?
The thing I remember as a kid is I’d just watch Michael Jackson and Prince videos. And I remember Dave, our gardener, standing over my shoulder with his girlfriend and he kind of expressed the idea that these people were from a different planet. And I remember thinking, ‘Well I’m a lot more like him than I am you’.
What’s next for you guys?
We haven’t even put an album out. We’ve put our fourth EP out and we’re playing Brixton Academy and we’re supporting the Rolling Stones. The 1975 will be supporting the Rolling Stones this July in Hyde Park and are touring various locations throughout the year. ChicLifestyleMagazine | Issue52

Director J.J Abrams allayed fears of a doomed Star Trek reboot in 2009, and here he manages to score second time out as well.
The Great Gatsby
Director – Baz Luhrmann Reuniting with Leonardo DiCaprio following Romeo & Juliet (1996), director Baz Luhrmann brings his distinctive style to a film adaptation of The Great Gatsby. A whizz-popping extravaganza for the eyes, the film does over-reach and over-gloss the story; the decadent nature being over-emphasised given the multi-faceted and thematically rich tale. However, DiCaprio makes for a good lead, driving much of the film over Luhrmann’s flashy pretentions whilst
complementing them. At the core of the story is DiCaprio’s character of J. Gatsby who is wonderfully complex and both likable yet detestable in a nuanced performance. Needless to say, the film won’t be to everyone’s sensibilities given the stylised form. Fans of Luhrmann’s Romeo & Juliet or Moulin Rouge (2000) should enjoy the film and when the story, rightly, takes centre stage, it lives up to potential. Perhaps all it needed was more grit and less glitter in re-appropriating the 20s for the modern age.
Joining the crew of the trusty USS Enterprise once more, this time they’re on the trail of a former ally turned terrorist, played by Benedict Cumberbatch. The film definitely intends to be big budget, bigger screen, blockbuster, popcorn-munching entertainment. However, it’s the interplay between Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto as Kirk and Spock that stands out, trading quips between (and even during) spectacular action sequences that range from a volcanic rescue to a Klingon skirmish. It lacks the theological depth of the Trek of old, but it more than makes up for it in sheer fun. The film also makes for a nice companion piece to the 1982 classic, Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan.

The discovery of a boat stuck in a tree on the Arkansas Delta leads to the discovery of a strange drifter by the name of Mud, played by Matthew McConaughey. Mud is a film tied to its setting. Put against the backdrop of the Deep South, Mud is a fairly easy-going and slow-paced film, but it has a murkiness that lends it character. Matthew McConaughey makes for a very well-cast eccentric,
The film’s tendency to explore characters does detract from the tension it’s also trying to create, but the film still has its moments of ferocity as well as a sense of the fantastical. The boat in the trees and the other-worldliness of Mud makes for a Peter Pan-ish innocence that sits well with the gritty story. A gumbo of styles, but mostly a satisfying watch.

Having been a smash-hit at the box office, Les Misérables makes its way to Blu-Ray and DVD and has already sold in vast numbers for good reason. Tom Hooper’s adaptation of the stage musical, based on Victor Hugo’s novel, does lose some of its lustre on the small screen, and for fans of bonus features, you’ll be disappointed as there is nothing more than a downloadable electronic copy. However, the film itself still boasts a strong impact with stunning performances and impressive set pieces. Perfect viewing for a quiet night in.

REVIEW
O
ur resident whisky expert, Chris Bamford, is back again taking us from coast to coast one whisky at a time! This month we look at an American rye whisky, a whisky of epic strengths from Skye and something of the complex style from near the river Spey.
A
bar situated on Ecclesall Road, D’Michaels oozes easy charm, stunning fixtures and an urban chic meets Miami water front vibe, right from the get go. The minute I walked through the elegant front patio area and into D’Michaels, the effortless South Florida tone of the place washed over me. Monochrome faux chandeliers juxtaposed with the intricate graffiti style art such as the epic sunset urban Miami cityscape mural that graces the side of the bar, leap out at first sight. I had a chance to grab a hold of co owner Earl Marshall. He told me that D’Michaels was inspired by his and his wife’s frequent trips to Miami, where the attentive service, such a contrast to what they often encountered this side of the Atlantic, and the laid back culture of the city’s many famous bars inspired them to bring the phenomenon back to Sheffield. The results speak for themselves, and as we started with the outstandingly rich Java Blend coffee, I was

dazzled by the quality that underscored the breezy beach front vibe. We moved onto the cocktail menu (all costing £6.50) and I got to sample two of D’Michaels specialities. The first, the Porn Star, a heady drink built around a strong passion fruit flavour danced on the tongue with a slight fizz. The second, the Velvet Rope was an altogether sweeter affair with copious alcohol laced with honey and generous helpings of Raspberry. It was quite frankly stunning.
Vibe is important to the owners of D’Michaels, who emphasise the importance of the overall energy of the place to the customer experience and regularly feature Jazz musicians to lend said vibe for their lucky customers. D’Michaels is a triumph of cultural innovation. Just the shot in the arm the Steel City needed!

First we start in America with a whisky distilled in Kentucky. This is not a bourbon, but a rye whisky. Rye whiskies differ from bourbon in that whilst bourbon must be over 50% corn, rye whiskies must be, as the name would suggest, over 50% rye. Rittenhouse Rye is a prime example of such whiskies and in 2010 it won the Best American Whisky award at the World’s Whisky Awards. Rye whiskies were very popular in pre-prohibition times and have been rediscovered recently, as Chris explains, and are being promoted by whisky experts at the moment. This particular whisky is 100 proof by the American system which means that it’s about 50% abv. Rye whiskies tend to be quite sweet with vanilla tones and Rittenhouse is certainly no exception. At just £2.80 a time this is the cheapest (in price) of our three.
Next we travel to the Isle of Skye to the Talisker distillery where we find the Talisker 57 Degrees North. The distillery itself is at 57 degrees latitude on the coast, hence the name of this whisky and they have also made this whisky at 57% cask strength, which is incredibly strong. The whisky is peaty, earthy, but with hot chilli and peppery tones. You can try Talisker 57 Degrees for yourself at Shakespeare’s for just £3.80!
And finally we have a rather complex Speyside single malt, BenRiach. Aged in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks for the last couple of years, this whisky has a mildly fruity and vanilla-esque flavour. This conflicts though, since the whisky is quite peaty by nature, which gives the whisky an interesting flavour. “It’s a bit more challenging than some whiskies”, admits Chris. Though this is not the smoothest drink around, it is certainly worth trying, especially at the great price of £3.20!

MaveliRestaurant South Indian cuisine at its finest
FOOD REVIEW

lways hot on the heels on the freshest eateries in the city, the newly opened Maveli caught our eye, so we sent our culinary correspondent down for a taste. Owned and managed by Tojo Jos, Sajy Mathai and Cherian Mookenchery, Maveli is the result of many years’ experience in the catering industry. Supported by Chef Thangaraj, who specialised in Chettinad cuisine, the restaurant puts an emphasis on cooking all food fresh on site, with local market ingredients being used as much as possible in their South Indian, halal menu. Through the door we were transported to a luxurious world of deep red, black and gold. Each detail of the dÊcor screamed luxury, whilst enticing scents of spices filled the air. My eyes were instantly drawn to the fully stocked wine rack which sat comfortable on the bar to our right. My friend and I started with an ice cold Kingfisher; the perfect drink to accompany any spicy food. There was a huge array of starters to choose from, all of which sounded simply delicious, and I was helpfully guided towards the Andhra Chilli Chicken; an excellent choice for lovers of meat and heat. The chicken was extremely spicy yet not overpowering, and still very tender and flavoursome. My friend opted for the fish fritters which were perfectly cooked; crisp and slightly hot. For the main course I chose the Chettinad Chicken, whilst my friend took the vegetarian Ennai Katrika; spiced baby aubergine. The Chettinad Chicken comprised of gorgeous juicy chicken cooked
in a beautifully rich sauce with warmly spiced undertones. The Ennai Katrika tasted authentically South Indian cooked in a rich tangy sauce and a fresh taste. Both meals were served with perfectly cooked rice, which was light and fluffy, and Malabar Parotta (an Indian flatbread), crispy and flaked apart well. Both accompanied the mains perfectly. Next came my absolute favourite part of the experience: dessert. Every single item on the dessert menu looked tempting and I found myself hard pressed to make a decision. Finally I went for the classic, Pistachio Kulfi. It was really creamy, garnished with fresh pistachios; just the thing to cleanse the palette after all of those hot flavours! My friend decided on the Gulab Jamun (sweet fried dumplings) which were warm and spicy sweet with hints of cardamom. The dumplings were soft and beautifully presented. Throughout the night the service was excellent. The kitchen team was small yet efficient, with the warm and friendly front of house team continuously returning to our table to check that everything was going well. We really felt as though we were being treated to a five star experience and would definitely recommend Maveli to anyone looking for a great new restaurant.

ChicBeauty Summer is finally here, and with it comes a refresh of make-up styles. Gone are the drab hues of winter, and in its place is a pop of colour. We’ve compiled our tips on the trend, plus reviewed new salons S10 Medispa and St Paul’s Hair. Plus we’ve even squeezed in an interview with the winner of a British Barbers Association Award, Adam Mir.
Scissor Skills We had a chat with Adam Mir, talented barber and style artist who recently won the Classic Masters category in the British Barber of the Year Award. Can you start by telling us about yourself and how you got into the barbering profession? I started off when I was around 15. I used to go to my local barbershop for my own hair cutting and l found it fascinating to watch. From there I started practising on friends and family until I left school and went to college to study Barbering. How did you first find out about the British Barber competition and how did you get involved? It’s a yearly competition carried out by the British Barbering Association. I found out about it through information on the internet, their website and information brochures. I had to enter a photographic entry which demonstrated a classic look with excellent technical cutting and styling. I entered two images; one showing the haircut from the front angle, and the other from a side angle. Can you tell us about your competition experience as part of the British Barbers Classic Masters category? It was fantastic! I really enjoyed every part of it, from picking the model, deciding on the style of the haircut, and working with the photographer. Altogether there were three stages I had to get through, after each one I felt relieved and excited, but a bit nervous! I really wanted to win but I didn’t want to get my hopes up.
A
s summer is upon us, we can’t help but think that we need to adjust our make-up bags to fit the latest trends. Top make-up artists have been opting for the brightest colours such as teals, hot pinks and oranges. The trick is to choose one part of the face to accentuate (such as the lips, eyes or cheeks) and stick to it, as bright colours all over the face can look overdone.
Skin
In the summer heat, it’s best not to overdo it with the foundation, otherwise you can end up looking like an oil slick by the end of the day. For daytime, products such as the Clinique Almost Powder Foundation Makeup with SPF 15 will give you a glow whilst also mattifying any oil-prone areas of the face. It can be layered throughout the day to keep your skin intact and is available in a range of shades, but be sure to use SPF to avoid premature wrinkles and to protect your skin from UV rays. Clinique Almost Powder Foundation, £22
Foundation
For a heavier coverage which is crucial at night time, it is best to get a medium-full coverage foundation. Our top choice is the Illamasqua Skin Base Foundation, which looks amazing when photographed. This product can be used in the day when sheered out or it can be layered to provide buildable coverage. As it blends easily, it won’t leave your skin looking cakey. Illamasqua Skin Base Foundation, £27
Eyes
There is so much choice in terms of what to do with this part of your face, and one look that you can easily achieve is the bright eyeliner trend, seen on many runways this summer. We’ve chosen the Nars Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner for a burst of colour, as they’re available in an assortment of colours to glam up any look whether it’s for day or night. As these liners are long-wearing, they won’t budge. Nars Larger Than Life Eyeliner, £18
Cheeks
Lately, companies have been creating products with varying textures and in lots of colours. An easy to use blusher is the Bobbi Brown Blush in 05 Plum, which offers a matte finish as well as long-lasting wear. Applied to the apples of the cheeks after powdering your face, this blusher will give you a light coverage with big impact as it is so pigmented. Bobbi Brown Blush, £18
Lips
The difference between looking perfectly done and looking natural is which lip colour you choose. A colour and product which will suit everyone effortlessly is the Estee Lauder Long Lasting Lipstick in Rubellite (although it is available in many colours). This bright purple pink hue will match most skin tones and can be used in the daytime as well as at night. Estee Lauder Long Lasting Lipstick - £19.50

How did it feel to win your category of the competition and how has the entire experience broadened your horizons as a barber? It felt great to be acknowledged for something that I have worked hard for, for so many years. Winning this competition has given me the motivation to enter more, hopefully succeeding further in my career. What advice would you give to other aspiring barbers out there? Just to constantly keep learning and updating your skills. Watching other barbers is one of the best ways to learn different techniques. What’s next for you? I’m going to enter more competitions in an attempt to get my name out there and get more publicity.

ometimes a quick slap of foundation just doesn’t cut it. The aftereffects of sun damage, stress and unhealthy living are telling signs as to how well you’ve looked after your face and body. Even the unavoidable ageing process can leave you looking a lot less lush than you’d like. However, there’s no longer a need to cringe when you look in the mirror. An answer to the problem comes to Sheffield in the shape of Medispa S10, a saving grace in the battle to look as good as we can. Having opened on the 12th June on Fulwood Road next to the West 10 wine bar, the clinic offers much, much more than a superficial spritz of fake tan. Medispa S10 provides a range of ground-breaking treatments to transform the face and body, providing exclusive, non-surgical therapies which give incredible results, solving everything from cellulite to stretch marks to wrinkles. Partners Charmaine Hearn, Juliet Laws and Emma Idowu decided to bring their knowledge and expertise together to bring a little bit of Harley Street to Sheffield. Hailing from the Yorkshire area, the team have all worked in the cosmetic industry for many years, with Charmaine and Juliet having worked with consultant plastic surgeons in London. The team try out and approve all treatments before offering them in the clinic, only including the most effective machines and methods to their treatment list.
After
After An amazing treatment offered is laser hair removal, performed with the Soprano machine. Unlike other lasers and IPL machines, this treatment is virtually pain-free and can treat all skin types, including Asian and black skin. Most lasers work by focusing on the darker hair above the paler skin, however the Soprano focuses on the hair below the surface of the skin, meaning it’s effective on all skin colours. Medispa S10’s Soprano laser is one of three in the area, but they are the only company to have the latest machine. Another incredible treatment offered is the Accent RF machine, which lifts and tightens any part of the body including the face, and results have been spectacular as proven in the images. The Accent RF can be used to treat lines and wrinkles, cellulite, stretch marks and scarring, and to tighten the face, neck and arm. For full effect it will take four to six treatments to see a difference, plus a maintenance session every six to twelve months. The sensation is virtually pain free and feels like a relaxing warm massage. Unlike other clinics offering the service, Medispa S10 have a nurse prescriber to apply Botox and fillers, plus mesotherapy, which can help with skin rejuvenation and also weight reduction and hair regrowth on suitable clients. Additionally, the clinic is planning to offer the PRP (vampire facelift), which has amazing results.
Medispa S10 is brimming with experience and knowledge, and the clinic has even arranged to work with Maxillo facial surgeon and cancer specialist, Mr Yousefpour, who works with many hospitals including Sheffield’s Thornbury Hospital. Mr Yousefpour can advise patients who want to take the next step towards cosmetic surgery. The Medispa S10 team have also worked with Mr Nick Percival, from Channel 4’s ‘10 Years Younger’, for several years; now their medical associate for patients wanting to see Mr Percival in London. Medispa S10 is a friendly, welcoming place for anyone wanting to discuss their face and body rejuvenation options. Pop in for a chat. For a free consultation and discounts of up to 25% off a course of the Soprano laser hair removal and Accent RF treatments when booked before 20th July 2013, register online at info@sheffieldmedispa.co.uk.

idden away in a corner of the Peace Gardens, lies Hair @ St Pauls. A bijou basement snipping haven of exposed brick, glossy tiles and shimmering cubic chandeliers, the salon is run by the experienced Clare Morton. Having opened in November 2012, there’s already has a constant stream of loyal clients trickling down the stairs. I popped in for a hair overhaul.
The Consultation
With a blonde head of muddled highlights, it was definitely time for a hair refresh. Liking the ombre/ dip dye trend, I didn’t want to go so extreme but fancied the concept of darker roots and blonde tips, adding some depth to my blonde hair. Clare discussed my ideas with me, showing me the colour chart and recommending what shade to go for. We planned to go for a mid-brown for the roots which wouldn’t be too dark next to my face, with a more muted blonde through the ends to tone down the existing blonde. The darker colour would also help my hair to recover from previous highlights and

add some much needed moisture.
The Process
Clare started by applying the colour. She first applied the highlights, weaving throughout the head but focusing on the ends of the hair, about 3-4 inches down. Clare then applied the darker colour to the roots and the hair in between the highlights, and left on for about 15 minutes underneath heat. Once the colour had set, I popped over to the sinks for the wash. A colour shampoo was used on my hair, to protect from fading as my hair is quite porous. Next a treatment was massaged in to seal down the hair follicles and again stop fading. After being treated to both a vigorous and relaxing head massage, it was time for the cut. Clare sectioned the hair and trimmed off the minimum length as I am growing my hair longer, with shorter layers on top to maintain weight to the ends and show off the colour effect. She then applied Sebastian Mousse Forte to add a blast of maximum
volume and hold, then blow-dried in sections with a large, round brush to boost support into the roots. She also used the brush to softly curl the hair, then once dry, used straighteners to add voluptuous, glamorous curls, finishing with Sebastian Shaper hairspray to hold the look in place.
The Result
A glossy, luxurious style with a fabulous colour effect. The dark colour eases into the lighter ends, playing with the ombre effect with a more subtle design. The dark colour at the roots gives my face a completely different look after being blonde for years; a welcome change and interesting colour effect.

he look is a timeless classic for both men and women. This season, we can expect to see the continuation of fringing, T-strap heels and feathers, as well as colours such as beige, pink, gold, black and navy. One key feature of this trend is the dropped waist for dresses, typical of the 1920s flappers. With such variety in one trend, there’s no reason why everyone shouldn’t be dressed in elegant glamour from this decade and we’ve provided our favourites.

You can even go one step further by curling your hair tightly to frame your face and accessorise with a hat or even a jewelled hair band.

s the reading on the thermometer creeps ever higher, more and more of us are stocking up our summer suitcases. There may be a few weeks yet before the final boarding call, but why not start your holiday early by getting your fix of this summer’s hotly tipped Traveller trend? This trend is relaxed, and effortlessly cool. It can be worn on the beach, at the market, out for dinner, or even on the plane- the sky is the limit. The versatility of the look means that only a few key pieces are needed to create countless mix ‘n’ match outfits. The high street’s offerings look runway ready; having taken inspiration from Dolce & Gabbana’s SS13 collection. Thankfully though, the high street price tag is significantly less hefty than D&G’s. A staple item of the trend is a loose, printed maxi dress. At £48, Ecote’s ‘Jemma’ maxi dress from Urban Outfitters is the perfect base for a trendy traveller outfit. Team it with a draped head chain (£12 from Urban Outfitters) some Beaded sandals (£12.50 from F&F at Tesco) and a fringed backpack (£45 from ASOS). This über-cool outfit is fit for a night out drinking cocktails, but equally is comfortable enough to wear on a long-haul journey. The only rule of this trend is there are no rules. Clash prints, add textures and rememberthe busier the better. Embrace the laid-back traveller trend as part of your holiday wardrobe; it’d be plain lazy not to.

gone one step further, running a completely different academy which specialises in training stylists to the highest and, of course, most creative standards. This is not only for newbie stylists; it also caters to fully qualified stylists who want to expand their skill set and generally get creative with the skills they already possess. Many of Creator’s customers are students and Mark Pearson, Creative Director and Owner of Creator Hair, has noticed a significant difference in style choice between Chinese students and British students. “[Chinese students] do have quite a lot of creative work done. They’re the ones that are really pushing the boundaries, as opposed to the British students who are very conservative”, says Mark. Creator’s latest photo-shoot (pictured here) was put together by a team of stylists and students. It is inspired by the so-called Chinese Fashionista Revolution; a rebellion of sorts from rigid structures and styles made popular by Chinese natives. This is a chance for young Chinese students to break-out and experiment with style and colour. “They’re doing what students of the 60s and 70s did where they didn’t want to be in that 50s & 40s mould of their parents. So they went to the exact opposite end of the spectrum - shaved their heads and coloured their hair”, says Mark. This concept is shown within Creator Hair’s latest style photo-shoot. Here specialist stylists have used translucent hair colour, which is unique to Creator in Sheffield since no other salon offers the colour. Translucent colour boasts a lot more intensity than traditional colour and gives a grungier look using pinks, blues and greens.
CREATORHAIR A creation of its own.
It’s all in the name. Creator Hair is no ordinary salon; it’s a creation of its own, a complete reinvention of the salon experience. The salon aims to not only chop your locks, but to create an entire experience unique from any other in Sheffield. This is a far stretch from the monochrome salons, a throwback to the 1980s, that scatter the country offering a bland and boring wet cut. On entering the shop, lusciously decorated in an open plan format, you know that you’re not in for your average haircut. From taking your pick from the extensive alcoholic drinks menu to having a back massage whilst they wash your hair, every single part of the bespoke salon has been upgraded, making this an experience like no other. For a number of years Creator Hair has been pushing the boundaries of what it means to be a creative salon in the heart of Sheffield. This has meant introducing innovative systems such as eco-towels, environmentally friendly disposable towels specifically for salons, which are at the forefront of salon remodelling. This not only
means the towels used in the salon are ethical, but also that they are extremely hygienic. Whilst many would stick to the status quo and may be unwilling to change traditional methods, Creator Hair strives for change, and with it brings improvements on the old and stagnant in order to achieve only the best experience for their clients.
The models are dressed contrastingly in military fashion, a subtle nod to their previous restraints, whilst their hair is rebellious; brightly coloured in severe styles. The jewellery also encompasses the notion of breaking out of traditional style, adding a splash of bling to the otherwise conservative outfits. The concept behind the shoot is all about being wild and experimenting with individual style, and this certainly comes across in the pictures. With thanks to the Creator shoot team: Dan, Ula and Louise, and photography from Mark Pearson.
As a natural progression of this unique salon, Creator Hair also has a dedicated specialist academy which aims to train stylists in everything from classic cuts to classic colouring to photo-shoots. Whilst many salons run academies so as to train their stylists to the national minimum, Creator Hair has ChicLifestyleMagazine | Issue52

ChicInteriors Summer is a time for being adventurous in terms of redecorating. Bright colour combinations can be used to spice up any room and certain accents throughout the house can really add a special something and make your home look extraordinary. Choose one colour and play it up by using neutrals through the rest of the room.

Living Room

The living room sets the tone for the rest of the house. It is the room where you will probably spend most of your time. The thing to remember is that a focal point (one key piece) will give the eyes something to primarily focus on when you enter the room. This could be in the form of a mirror, fireplace, clock or even a large piece of furniture such as a sofa. This piece can then be used as the colour palette to set the tone for the rest of the room; using a richer colour such as a grape purple means that the upholstery can see you into autumn as well.
Kitchen
In the kitchen, you can afford to be a little bit daring with much more vibrancy. Again, keep the background colour scheme neutral and add accents of bright features. House of Fraser truly can’t be beaten when it comes to bright touches of colour in terms of kitchen appliances like toasters, espresso makers and even storage jars. Our choices are colourful as well as fully functional.

Sometimes it can be difficult to modify the room that you are probably least likely to use throughout the day. The living room often gets neglected in terms of seasonal decorations but it’s simple to update it and add a touch of glamour and class with a vase and a bouquet of flowers. A good choice from Debenhams is the fabric hydrangeas in a glass bowl. Whilst they add a touch of colour to any dining table or mantle, the flowers are made of fabric so they don’t even need to be replaced.

Bedrooms have a tendency of getting quite cluttered if they aren’t well kept. You spend a few hours here in the morning and at night, before and after sleeping, and the last thing you need is to trip, fall and seriously injure yourself on an item you own such as a cushion or a DVD. However, this never needs to be a possibility if you buy a storage shelf from one of the leading department stores, John Lewis, which has many colourful units which would effortlessly fit into your home. Alternatively, Made has furniture which is slightly more subdued but equally as stunning.

MoodInteriors Houses can look a bit drab and dated if they haven’t been brought up to speed in the 21st Century and sometimes it’s best to let the experts handle a big renovation project. We had a chat with Paula Rist, the owner of Mood Interiors on Abbeydale Road on creating beautiful homes.
Is there a big trend in terms of renovating a home right now?
We’ve teamed up with Marks and Spencer to give you some inspiration from their lush homewares. This month, add the finishing touches to your living space with their fresh and unique contemporary chic appliques, fresh colours and unusual designs.

Not generally but the contemporary and the rustic twist is a massive trend right now, because they work well together. People have tended to stay where they are rather than moving and they come to interior designers because they want something special.
How do you make sure your clients are satisfied with the end product?
It’s important that the clients know what we’re doing throughout the whole process. It’s about good communication between us and the clients.
What advice do you have for people who are looking to make changes to their homes?

Always stick to your budget. Make sure you plan what you’re going to buy before going shopping. You should always know what you’re going to put in each room or space because people have a tendency to go out shopping and bargain-buying. They don’t think about what furniture would look best or the colours. At the end of the day, it’s all about planning and preparation.

Mazda CX-5 2.2 Sport Auto AWD By Tim Barnes-Clay Motoring Journalist t @carwriteups www.carwriteups.co.uk
T
he all-new CX-5 from Mazda packs a punch with a 2.2D 173 bhp engine under the bonnet.
0-62 mph comes in 9.4 seconds and top speed is 127 mph. That’s not at all bad given that this is an all-wheel-drive Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV). The diesel powered motor is attractive in a chunky sort of way and it looks quite different to many other vehicles on the road. In the flagship model, on test here, you get all the trimmings, including leather seats, climate control, MP3 connectivity and so on. But, being an adoring parent of two tiny kids, what really impressed me is that it’s officially one of the safest cars in the world. That makes any parent commuting with fragile human beings feel instantly reassured. The CX-5 achieved top marks in all categories of the demanding Euro NCAP tests. Its grades for adult occupant protection, child occupant protection and safety assist systems (94 percent, 87 percent and 86 percent respectively) were well above the 80 percent, 75 percent and 60 percent thresholds required in each category to collect the maximum five star safety rating. The first of a new generation of Mazda models, the CX-5 is also the first equipped with the innovative SKYACTIV body. With the aim of developing the ideal car body, Mazda’s engineers went back to the drawing board, rethinking the fundamental principles of structure, materials and manufacturing methods. As a result, high-tensile steel, which is incredibly strong, not to mention lightweight,

ChicAsian LifestyleMagazine | Issue15
comprises 61 percent of the body. The Mazda CX-5 therefore not only delivers superior crash safety, but is also extremely light. Mazda says it plans to use the SKYACTIV body in all of its new-generation products. Behind the wheel, the driving position is good and the seating is comfortable. The Mazda’s six-speed automatic gearbox is smooth and the CX-5 grips the road well. In fact the AWD model features variable torque distribution and ultra-precise slip detection, giving a front/rear torque split ranging from 100/0 to 50/50 percent. The Mazda CX-5 has generous front and rear legroom and a spacious boot (463 litres) plus a high quality feel, superior functionality and low noise levels for an enjoyable ride. Easy-to-use features include the three-piece 40/20/40 split folding rear seats with release levers in the cargo area and an advanced tonneau cover that opens and closes with the tailgate. In many ways this is a car without compromise. It’s the perfect solution for motorists with young families, thanks to its best-in-class luggage space and flexible seating arrangement as well as class-leading CO2 emissions and respectable fuel economy. It’s also a fantastically accomplished towing vehicle and will haul up to 2000 kg. The only drawback for this particular model is the price-tag. You won’t get a lot of change out of £30,000 if you buy the CX-5 2.2 Sport Auto AWD from a dealership. But safety comes at a price, and I, for one, would rather have an SUV like this to navigate the rural routes to school, nursery and work than, say, a similar priced, showier, German luxury marque.

place to visit. Its casual, friendly ambience and month-long Oktoberfest celebrations are what set it apart from so many bars in Singapore. If you are a beer lover, chill yourself out with freshly brewed beers like the Munich Lager and Munich Dark. Its German interior decor gives it a friendly feel. Food is exciting as well, and you might have a nice surpise before actually eating as dishes such as the German sausages are served in cast iron pans and Bavarian snacks are presented on wooden boards.
Absinthe www.absinthe.sg Moving to a new nest at Boat Quay, Absinthe is a comfortable and unassuming place serving French dishes. Here not only can you enjoy a variety of carefully selected wines covering most French wine producing regions, you can also have a taste of the best French cuisine provided by Chef Francois Mermilliod. Standing at 165 metres high, the Singapore Flyer overlooks the entire Marina Bay. And there’s more to than that. You can enjoy some romantic secret time with your lover (a number of gentlemen have been known to propose in the flyer, as she has nowhere to escape). ast month Paul Jenkins, body building and dietary expert, took a moment to warn us against the futility of taking on fad diets to lose those pesky pounds in an attempt to fit into that gorgeous string bikini you saw on sale last week. This month, Paul decided to go into greater depth concerning the Keto diet, which sees the dieter restrict their carb intake.
The theory of a Keto diet is to restrict carbs and the body will burn fat for energy. When carbohydrates are sparse fats then become a primary source of fuel. However fats cannot be used for a long period of time without consuming carbohydrates. The irony is that by using fats as a primary energy source you are actually creating an environment in which the body cannot utilize fats as fuel. A result of the inability of muscle cells to use fats for energy, free fatty acids (FFA) move into the blood stream. Once these FFAs reach the liver they are converted
TheKetoDiet
into ketones. Some of these ketones are excreted in urine, the rest accumulate in the blood (ketosis) and change the pH of the blood causing it to become more acidic. If the blood’s PH becomes too acidic, this will result in a condition known as acidosis. An increase in plasma PH caused by acidosis affects enzyme functions by preventing normal cellular reactions from occurring, resulting in significantly decreased athletic performance. A Keto diet actually allows you to consume more calories than you previously did on your normal carbohydrate diet. The reason for this is to compensate for the deficit in energy created when the body needs to convert other foodstuffs to blood glucose. If you follow a Keto diet, your body’s glucose requirements will not change. The difference being on a carb free diet your body will get blood glucose from the conversion of other foodstuffs. Most people on a Keto diet find they can only follow it for a short period of time due to lethargy and cravings for carbohydrates.

Aquafit

W
ith summer fast approaching, the road to perfecting your beach body can sometimes feel everlasting. Running gets tedious, weight training gets repetitive and even doing laps in the pool becomes routine. That’s why the new way to lose weight, get active and have fun is Aquafit. Sheffield is fortunate in that there are many swimming pools where Aquafit classes are carried out on a weekly basis and one of the best places to partake in this fun activity is Ponds Forge. After its £3 million refurbishment in 2007, Ponds Forge houses a 50 metre, Olympic-sized swimming pool which is also commended for being the deepest
diving pool in the UK, at an astounding 25 metres deep. Aquafit is a diverse type of sport in that you have a choice of what you’d like to do in the water, such as Aqua Circuits, Aqua Jog and even Aqua Zumba. Although it’s fairly easy to do, and is suitable for even less experienced swimmers, it is an activity that is sure to improve cardiovascular fitness and it won’t overwork your joints and muscles. As well as these benefits, experts say that it is a great activity for the internal organs and to aid lymphatic drainage. Suspended Coffee
The art of paying it forward
T
he simple act of enjoying a coffee in the comfort of a heated and inviting café is a fundamental of our society. The café is a place people can meet, talk, read and generally socialise. However, this seemingly insignificant aspect of modern life is, for some, an unobtainable luxury. The idea behind Suspended Coffee is to allow people in need, who could otherwise not afford to buy a hot drink, to enjoy one nevertheless. The idea, which is loosely based on an Italian tradition dating back over 100 years, involves customers buying a coffee for someone less fortunate than themselves which can then be redeemed by a homeless or needy person at their leisure. The concept was adopted and is now vastly popular in Melbourne; one of the largest success stories. Within the UK as well many cities have moved to adopt the traditional as their own.
SuperFoods: Tea
A
drink that most Britons know and love, tea is held in high esteem for its countless health benefits and now it has claimed a spot on the list of superfoods. The many varieties of tea mean that everyone can find one to their taste, such as black tea, green tea and herbal tea; tea infused with jasmine, chamomile and even peppermint. This superfood contains many antioxidants and it’s particularly rich in polyphenols which boost metabolism and detoxify the body. In Asian countries like Japan and China, tea is drunk almost every day and there is strong scientific evidence that it prevents aging and reduces the effects of pollution. Tea also contains less caffeine than coffee, with just 15-70mg per cup whereas the same
amount of coffee measures up to a staggering 80185mg. This lower level of caffeine in tea equates to relaxing properties and could alleviate stress. The effects and benefits of tea are strongest when milk isn’t added to the cup. This is because proteins in milk called caseins reduce the concentration of catechins, a flavonoid in tea which has been associated with preventing heart disease and cancers. Tea doesn’t just have to be ingested. When used on the skin, it can act as a sun block (in a lotion) and can even be used to prevent lines and wrinkles. Just one of a number of reasons to put the kettle on!
Richard Hennessy, a Hypnotherapist and former Barista, is responsible for initiating the campaign for Suspended Coffee. “It tied in quite nicely with my ideas of doing nice things for people. I try and do that where I can”, he says of his initial reaction to the idea. Using social media and word of mouth Richard has convinced members of the community to get involved in the concept and is planning to launch Suspended Coffee in Sheffield once he has a substantial number of cafés involved. Currently a number of cafés have expressed their interest in partaking in the concept. Jo Hardiman, owner of the Honey Pie Tearoom, Chesterfield Road, was one of the first cafés in the city to agree to get involved. “I think when you own a café you’re already part of the bigger community. It’s just a really nice thing to be able to do”, says Jo. The logistics of the concept are to be decided, though Richard says that there will be a degree of consistency running through all vendors taking part. This is a chance for vendors and customers to give back to the community. The campaign is moving forward so watch this space!

Interview with
RadhaBedi
S
ix months ago the gang rape of a young female medical student aboard a bus in the Indian capital of Delhi not only shocked the Indian sub continent, but the international community as a whole. This appalling event has made society all over the world question the reality of life for women in India.
friend at the BBC, we met up, I told her what had happened and I was discovering and learning more about the reasons or attitudes behind why so many women and girls fend off unwanted sexual advances and lewd comments. For women in India, it’s the unwelcome reality every time they step out of their front door. I knew this was a story I had to get commissioned.
One of those questioning how such a horrible event could ever occur is Radha Bedi, a 28 year old British Indian female journalist. Radha has taken it upon herself to visit her ancestral home land and explore what life is really like for India’s female population.
Can you provide our readers with an overview of the situation concerning women and girls in India that you encountered whilst making this documentary? Women and girls in India have been and still are encountering sexual harassment every day. It’s an unfortunate reality facing every country in the word. Sexual harassment and molestation known nationally as “eve-teasing” is not unique to Delhi or India for that matter. But in a country where tradition and modernity are at logger heads, women are constantly protecting their bodies and defending their safety every time they step out of their front door.
The documentary, currently titled ‘India; A Dangerous Place to be a Woman’, which is scheduled to air on 27th June on BBC3, sees Radha explore the reality of life for women and girls in India, in the process of interviewing the father of the Delhi rape victim and Tuba, a 15 year old girl who suffered horrific burns due to an attack from a rebuffed male admirer. We had the chance to sit down and question Radha Bedi about the documentary and get her take on where India goes from here. The documentary is such a profound concept, where did the idea for it all begin and what made you decide that now was the right time to go ahead with it? In December the world came to know of the unprecedented Delhi Gang Rape. I was shocked, completely shocked. I had always thought it was us, the foreigners, and the back packers that were subjected to such sexual abuse, not women and young girls living in India. I was naive in my thinking. I made contact with my development producer
You’ve interviewed a variety of people who have been affected by India’s overwhelmingly patriarchal attitude for the documentary, which one struck a chord with you the most and why? Meeting Tuba, the 15 year old girl who suffered from a horrific acid attack last year in September 2012 touched my heart in a profound way. It’s very difficult to put into words, when I first saw Tuba. To say I was shocked is to put it mildly. I remember taking a few deep breaths before talking and trying to get over the shock and stay collected. The first thing that struck me was her face and in particular her loud breathing. The acid has so severely burnt her face that Tuba cannot not move her lips or open her mouth. She has one eye. She has no eyebrows and the acid has literally torn her face away. She
struggles to eat and can only take liquids, which, you can imagine, has caused severe weight loss and malnutrition. Tuba has two pipes in each nostril to help keep her airways open, allowing her to breath, albeit with difficulty. Unable to talk at length, Tuba and her mother told me what had happened to her, together. She was on her way to daily tuition class, a routine walk she made every day. On her way, Tuba was met with four guys and stopped in her tracks by a boy she recognised from her class. Insisting Tuba should talk to him, she walked on and rejected his advances. Her rejection damaged his ego. With a two litre Coca Cola bottle, unknown to Tuba, filled with acid, the boy splashed the bottle in her face. Tuba told me, at first she thought it was boiling water because of the burning sensation. She never thought it could possibly be acid. When she bent over to cover her face, screaming, the boy then poured the remaining acid from the bottle over Tuba’s back, shoulders, arms and legs. It was only when her clothes had melted away, onlookers knew it was acid and rushed to help her. Would you say that the Delhi rape has or will prove to be a turning point in the way that Indian authorities deal with the widespread culture of violence against women? The Delhi Gang Rape Case has been a tipping point in the fight against violence against women and still is. Men and women are speaking up and protesting at what has been quietly tolerated and accepted for too long. We’ve seen huge protests and movements, calling for change in India. Small changes will lead to big significant changes, but that doesn’t mean rapes will stop. M
irpuri Dhera is a lot different to your normal restaurant experience. A full buffet restaurant, there’s no menu to choose from. Instead all dishes are available to fill up your plate with from the buffet. Over 40 traditional Kashmiri, Pakistani and Chinese dishes are available, including starters, mains and desserts. The restaurant itself has been redecorated, with over 200 seats and a stylish and sleek monochrome colour scheme. The food is kept in large, spherical serving dishes, each named and kept bubbling with heat. I settled down with a lemonade then picked up a plate and headed to the buffet to load it up. Chaperoned by a very friendly and helpful waiter, he talked me through every dish. I started with the starters: Paneer Pakora, Spring Rolls, Vegetable Pakora, Meat Samosa, Siek Kebabs, Chicken Wings, Chicken Siek Kebab, Chicken Tikka, Masala Fish and Chicken Malia. With nearly all the starters being part of the Indian cuisine, the Spring Rolls were a bit of an odd inclusion, yet still tasted great! My favourite was the Masala Fish – I’d never usually order this from range of starters on a menu but the battered fish was soft and tasty. The Chicken Malia was something I’d never tried and was a bit dubious of, but was perfectly cooked with

a tender, mild taste. I returned to the buffet for the main course. With a massive range of dishes to choose from, I tried every one! The list was long: Vegetable Rice, Chicken Pilau, Chicken Stir Fry, Chicken Sweet and Sour, Chips, Keema Matar, Degi Gosht (on the bone), Namkeen Gosht, Chicken Karahi (on the bone), Chicken Masala, Chicken Kofta, Saag Aloo (vegetarian), Tarka Dal (vegetarian) and Bhindi (vegetarian). A good mix of milder, well-known dishes and more traditional dishes cooked as they would be at home, there was something for all tastes. Cooking a number of dishes on the bone sets Mirpuri Dhera apart from the average Asian restaurant, and the meat fell easily off, tasting succulent and tasty. Chicken Karahi is actually my favourite dish and this one didn’t disappoint. The lamb dishes were juicy and delicious, and although every dish was slightly on the hot side of spicy, the individual flavours still came through, spiced with care. Naan and Roti are made to order, so I opted for a Roti which came freshly cooked, doughy on the outside and slightly crispy on the inside, going fantastically with the Saag Aloo. I finished off the meal with two desserts from their selection – Keer, Asian rice pudding, and Custard
Pudding. Passion Cake, Chocolate Cake and Lemon Cake and ice cream in a range of flavours were also available. The Keer was sweet yet delicately citrusy, and the Custard Pudding was a mix of pink custard, sponge and jelly hearts, a sweet and tasty finish to the meal. After a cup of milky Pakistani tea, I left feeling full to bursting! The buffet concept means diners can try a range of new dishes that they wouldn’t normally choose off a menu. As most of the dishes are Kashmiri and Pakistani the odd Chinese dish, although nice, didn’t really fit in and the restaurant’s passion definitely lies in Asian cuisine. However, it does add something unique to the restaurant and the buffet style offers and informal and sociable approach to dining out.

However, that was precisely the direction that Lylah’s Jewellery shop, jewellery experts located at 97 White Abbey Road in Bradford, took for their opening bash. The event was held to celebrate the store’s recent renovations which saw the space undergo a complete overhaul, in the process evolving into an effortlessly modern establishment, and it was a huge hit. With only balloons and the artistic majesty of their more complex jewellery pieces on display, the event truly put Lylah’s on the map as one of Bradford’s premier Asian Jewellery providers. Lylah’s is run by cousins Usmaan Zabair and Amman Sohail who, being fourth generation jewellers themselves, really do have the art of jewellery in their blood. The shop succeeds in incorporating traditional styles with a modern setting. Lylah’s is unique, named after one of the owners’ sisters, featuring custom-made pieces of effortlessly elegant, gold plated jewellery, with prices ranging from a cheap and cheerful £10 right up to high end products going for around £900. This precious jewellery can be worn for anything from weddings and bridal wear to an upmarket party and with summer coming up, wedding season is upon us and it’s the
perfect time to visit the shop and see for yourself that there really is something for everyone. Being located on White Abbey Road, one of the busiest streets in Bradford, there is no doubt that this jewellers will succeed in attracting many customers and making a name for itself in no time, and the owners are confident that the jewellery will sell itself. Lylah’s Jewellery values individuality and can make up the design you choose so you can be sure your final piece reflects who you really are. The shop states that it uses only the best quality material when making the jewellery; gold plated sets are handmade from brass materials which is the highest quality and the most expensive artificial material that you can use, to set it apart from other jewellery on the market. The store even has a special bridal service with a bridal suite where you can pick out custom pieces for the special day. With the flagship store proving a big hit with tentative plans to branch out, it looks like Lylah’s is here to stay.

Naz’s passion pays off
T
here is more to the stylish space that is Naz Beauty than originally meets the eye. Inside these black and white decorated walls is a story of passion, determination and integrity. The foundations of the salon are based firmly in the hard work of owner Naz, who has worked in the beauty industry for over 16 years. During that time she has worked with some of the biggest names in makeup such as MAC, Lubna Rafiq and Joshiv. And after spending years working across the UK, both based in London and also on a variety of top shows such as Eastern Eye and Asian Bridal Exhibition, this year Naz decided to take her great wealth of expertise to her very own salon, based in the heart of Bradford. “I’m not getting any younger day by day so I wanted to kind of settle down”, she says of the decision. The salon, which opened 20th May, serves two main purposes. Firstly it fulfils one of Naz’s great passions by allowing her the space in which to train
students in the unique art of beauty; something she has previously been asked to do time and time again by aspiring beauticians. Teaching is something which Naz takes very seriously. “I say to my students, ‘I’m giving you everything’”, she says of the package the Naz Beauty Training Academy offers. Within the five day intense course students are given all of the skills they need to become fully-fledged beauticians and then told to go away and practise for three months before being able to work professionally. This allows students to gain confidence and really take ownership of their new found skills before taking paying clients, so as to ensure clients get the best service around. Secondly the salon doubles as an appointment based bridal makeup studio, offering only the best bridal packages which cater to everything from hair to makeup to jewellery. Naz understands the importance of ensuring each detail of a bride’s makeup is perfect. “For me it’s always been about quality”, she says. “If it’s a bride and you mess her
makeup up and you’re living in a small town like Bradford, word gets out”. And word certainly has got out when it comes to Naz, but for all the right reasons. “When the bride’s up on that stage, all her friends and family will be asking who did the bride’s makeup”. Naz never rushes a bride’s makeup, ensuring that she always has time to add the finishing touches. It’s down to her hard work and perfectionist take on bridal makeup that her name is out there as one of the top bridal makeup artists around. “With me it’s always been word of mouth”, she says, and with the high quality of service she offers it’s really no wonder that people talk.

AdilAnwar
Interview With
H
aving started his career at just 13 years old, Adil Anwar has come a long way from his beginnings in the sport of boxing. Although suffering from a set-back when he broke his collarbone in a car accident, Adil defied medics who believed he would never box again, and went on to take his boxing talent professional. Hailing from Burley, near Leeds, Adil made his professional debut in 2007, rising to fame in 2012 when he achieved victory over competitor Tyron Nurse in the Prizefighter tournament, who was before then undefeated.
What do you think are your biggest achievements?
Getting to where i am now, to be honest with you. This British Title Fight that we’ve come into now, it’s one of the most prestigious belts in Great Britain, so fighting for that is a great honour, and finally getting my shot at it, it’s taken a while to get this shot. I’ve had to have two eliminated for the British Title and additional fights, so it’s taken just over a year to get a final shot at the British Title. It’s in July, July 6th. I mean, before that, I think Prizefighter, because that was quite an achievement because it’s three fights in
How did you first get into the sport of boxing?
My dad actually took me down to the local gym, just really for self-defence, and my granddad used to do gymnastics in the Pakistani army, and he also did boxing. Mohammed Ali was quite a big idol back then and also Prince Naseem was around when I was young.
Are they the people you get inspiration from then?
Who do you admire most in the world of boxing today?
Today, no doubt about it, it has to be Floyd Mayweather. He’s punch perfect, and not only that, he’s made an exceptional amount of money in boxing and he’s done everything the right way. Even inside the ring and outside the ring he trains hard before fights.
I think? I know! [Laughs] No, obviously I’m just going to do what I do best, train hard, focus for the fight, and make sure I’m doing everything right. I’m a lot fitter than I have been for a long time now, so I’m peaking just at the right time. So hopefully, July 6th, it falls on my birthday as well, so I turn 26 then I become British Champion as well!
Is there anyone you really want to fight who you’ve not fought before?
Well, at the moment, because I’ve been working my way up the domestic scenes, I’ve just been focusing on the domestic fighters, but realistically I do want to move on to the European stages and hopefully the world within the next year or so. So providing I win this fight, I will get a shot at a European Title fairly soon, then we can have a look at the big names out there because ultimately, it is the big names you want to fight. Like you’ve got Danny Garcia who’s a World Champion at the moment, you’ve got Lucas Matthysse who’s also World Champion at the moment at my weight category. Some of the names that are big names at my weight division are the likes of Amir Khan, Lamont Peterson; you’ve got all those names, but in future if there’s a fight that can be made then I would never turn down a fight.
One of the most important fights of Adil’s career is planned for July, for the Light Welterweight title. Chic Asian Lifestyle caught up with Adil in the run up to the fight.
Yeah, they were the inspirations at the time. Obviously Prince Naseem because that was kind of like my era, when he was around, growing up it was always about Prince Naseem, just his flamboyantness when he comes out to the ring!
What are your predictions for this fight – do you think you’ll win?
one night. It is very intense and obviously back and forth, back and forth for me. To be honest with you, I didn’t have a problem going into the tournament itself, it is a very risky tournament to go into but if you believe in yourself winning then you’re ready to take that risk.
So you’re fighting for the Light Welterweight title against Darren Hamilton in July at the Echo Arena in Liverpool? Yes, he’s currently the British Champion from London.
What advice would you give to anyone wanting to take their boxing skills professional?
If it is something they’re looking to turn professional then it is hard graft, it is non-stop hard work, but it’s how hungry you are, and how badly you want it, and you’ve got to keep working hard at it to be your best. I mean, you can’t turn around and say, ‘I could have been a good fighter, I could have been a world champion’, you want to look back and think this is what I did, I gave it my all, tried my best and this is how far I got.
