l y r e h C Following a two-year hiatus, pop royalty Cheryl Fernandez-Versini is back! The former Girls Aloud bandmate has released her fourth solo studio album and is once again gracing our Saturday night TV screens on The X Factor.

The Geordie goddess reveals to Chic why she no longer lives her life worrying about what other people think, why she doesn’t see herself as a fashion icon and how she’d love to see Girls Aloud take on The Spice Girls on The X Factor… Words: Jessica F oga rty

- 10 -

Thanks to your latest single, ‘I Don’t Care’, you became the UK’s first female solo artist to have five number one singles. Tell us about the track? It’s exactly what it says on the tin. Its one of those feel free, have fun, and don’t really give a shit vibes. Same as the video. You make a clear statement in the lyrics of ‘I Don’t Care’ about how happy you are in life and how you don’t care what people say. Is this the message you want fans to interpret? Yeah, I mean I haven’t cared for a long time really. You can’t live your life worrying about what other people think or say about you. Even if I do hope that people enjoy what I do, I can’t make that the sole focus of my life because that would make you miserable. In your new music video, you have a make-upfree appearance, how did that feel? Quite liberating. In one scene I have make-up on from the night before, like when you wake up and you’ve forgotten to take your make-up off. In another scene I’ve got no make-up on. Yeah just carefree – enjoy your life and stop worrying about pointless little things. Stupid things. You’re branded in the media as a fashion icon. Do you feel under pressure to look good? I don’t take any notice of that. That’s not my role, that’s just for whoever writes about that and I don’t read about it either. If one of them wants to call me Kermit the Frog then maybe. How would you describe your latest album, Only Human? The album is pop but there’s obviously a lot of different sounds on there. There’s also a couple of R&B sounding songs. The industry is not like it used to be where it was all just one body of work and everything sounded similar so I wanted to show there was different sounds on there. What motivates you? I think keeping it interesting for yourself is important, because if you aren’t interested you are never going to interest your supporters. I think keeping an ear to the ground is one thing but not being too heavily influenced by what is going on around you and going with your gut instinct is more important. On the first track on the album it opens up with a philosopher, Alan Watt. Where did the interest in Alan come from, and how did you discover him? A friend of mine played me a snippet of his speech, which I have used a small section of on the beginning of the album, and I was really blown away by it. I really related to it. I know lot of young teenagers and young kids online and on my social network platforms that are confused about live and which way to go, which direction to take. I felt it was a powerful message to put out there. What’s your favourite track on the album? I change my mind all the time, like, for a while it was ‘Throw Back’, and then it was, ‘Coming Up For Air’. I don’t know I’m changing my mind all the time. I really don’t think there are any fillers on this one.

- 11 -

Was there a last minute track you started working on and felt had to go onto this album? There was a song from me and Payne from One Direction for the deluxe album. It’s a ballad that was interesting and I wanted to put that on. How does being a TV judge compare to making your own music? It is an extension of what I do. It’s still music related even if it’s not me, it’s me helping someone create what I do. It’s helping somebody and giving them to opportunity to have what I have. If you look at One Direction, Ella Henderson and Cher Lloyd, people like that who have come from the X-Factor. To be part of someone’s journey like that, it’s just as much fun as doing it yourself. What’s next for you? How about following in Simon’s footsteps and launching your own record label? I’m concentrating on the here and now because as we all know, you never know what can change in the future. But, it is something I am interested in, and it is something I would love to look at for the future. But this year and right now, I’m just focusing on what is going on. Any plans to tour in 2015? I hope so, that’s the next thing I need to discuss with management and with my team. Maybe after Christmas when the craziness with X-Factor dies down, then we will get into that. But I hope so yes. On Jonathon Ross you and Mel B talked about the idea of a Spice Girls Vs Girls Aloud X-Factor, do you actually think that would happen? I would love that to happen, I mean I’m guessing I’m going to have to get on Cowell’s case a little bit more. But I think, it would be fun don’t you? Absolutely. Which band do you think would have the most songs? Well we were around for ten years, they were around for a few, so we may have a couple more than them. So what would be your secret weapon? And what Spice Girls track would be the biggest threat to you? They had some greats, I mean they are very nostalgic, they created such an impact on the industry and a lot of people all over the country would feel very nostalgic. But we had a really strong fan base that grew up with us over ten years, who were maybe 8 or 9 when we started and 18/19 when we split up you know. So, I think we both have a good audience. How does it feel being back on X Factor? This is my fourth series but I have been away for four years. I know what to expect this time around. But I still always get really nervous and anxious for my people you know, more than anything else it is an adrenaline filled night on Saturday and Sunday for your act so it’s a bit crazy but yeah, I enjoy it more because I know what to expect. So to sum up, are you happy with life in general? I’m very happy with life in general thank you very much for asking.

Words: Jessica F oga rty

Caprice Bourret From supermodel to lingerie entrepreneur | Words:

She’s one of the most photographed women in the world, having appeared on over 350 magazine covers across the globe and more than 200 TV shows.

Jessica F oga rty

How do you juggle being a celebrity, businesswoman and mum? I wish there was a formulae. You have to be Wonder Woman and sleep is not in the equation. Life is expensive and tough so you just have to work hard and keep going.

Former lingerie model, Caprice Bourret, ventured to England from Southern California 20 years ago.

Do you plan to return to California or is London home for life now? London is pouring down with rain right now yet I still love it here. The boys are in school here so I have no plans to move. The UK is home now.

She was voted GQ Magazine’s Woman of the Year, and Maxim’s International Woman of the Year for three years running. She received rave reviews in London’s West End playing the lead role in ‘The Vagina Monologues’ and the musical ‘Rent’. She later bought the rights to the hit production, ‘Debbie Does Dallas the musical’ which she produced and starred in, then in 2006, launched By Caprice Lingerie, which she fully finances, designs, models and markets.

After giving birth to your two sons, did you feel extra pressure to lose you your baby weight, being in the public eye? For the first year, I didn’t diet at all but breastfeeding helped me to shift a few pounds. Most mums will find their weight tends to come off naturally – running around after two boys is enough exercise.

Chic meets Caprice to see how life has changed from the mad world of modelling to becoming one the retail industry’s leading entrepreneurs, empowering women in business…

Do you miss your modelling days? Hell no! It was a fantastic career in my 20s and I was blessed to constantly have work and make money just from looking in to a camera but you become obsessed with how you look. I will admit, work is much harder for me now, but I’d still rather be running my own company than modelling.

What inspired you to launch, By Caprice Lingerie? I started the company in hope of creating a brand and company that I could pass on to my family and most importantly I wanted to do something that I love and feel passion for. How has the brand grown? Eight years ago when we first launched, there was demand for sexy lingerie. Some of my pieces just about covered a nipple. Now, we create more conservative pieces but they still have the underwire boost and remain fashion forward. My target audience is young women who want to feel confident but comfortable and have fun. The colours we use are much brighter than most other brands. We also launched By Caprice Swimwear on 2007 and By Caprice Bedding in 2010.

You’ve directed and starred in theatre productions. Do you have any plans to return to the stage? I’d love to! I’ve been thinking about it a lot recently – it would fit in well with my schedule especially now the boys are at school. I’m looking out for a new project. Are you taking a break for Christmas? Yes, I’m taking my children to see my mum in LA. What’s next for you? International expansion and building a website is next up on my to-do list.

Tell us about your latest collection for A/W 2014? I travel to Paris twice a year to source new embroideries and trends. This season I have focused on shades of purple with black. It’s everyday glamour.

DISNEY ON ICE BREAKS BOX OFFICE RECORDS WORD S : JE S S IC A F O G AR T Y

The Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, has broken box office records for this year’s Disney On Ice spectacular – Disney On Ice celebrates 100 Years of Magic. During November the Arena was home to production for 5 days and 11 performances, welcoming over 60,000 customers through its doors to see their favorite Disney characters all in one magical show. Disney On Ice has been coming to the venue since it opened back in 1991 so that’s an incredible 270 performances seen by over 1.3 million customers. Motorpoint Arena General Manager Rob O’Shea said “Disney On Ice is a staple to the Arena’s calendar and year after year people just keep coming back for more proving that families just can’t get enough Disney magic. “The atmosphere when the show is in the building is very special and we are very proud to host such an amazing show.” Disney On Ice will be back at the Motorpoint Arena next year from 18th – 22nd November with another very special show, more information will be revealed soon with tickets going on sale in Spring 2015. Keep your eyes firmly on the Arena website – join their mailing list to be one of the first to hear www.motoprointarenasheffield.co.uk.

THEATRE | STOMP WOR DS : BROOKE SIMONITE

Sweeping quietly came one cast member on to the stage, then one by one more brushes entered the stage louder and louder, before crash bang wallop! What a noise. Well what do you expect when a brush breaks during a routine. The multi-award winning global phenomenon returned to the stage in Sheffield last month. Now entering its 23rd year, this smash-hit show has entertained over 15 million people world-wide and for one week only Sheffield audiences had the chance to rediscover the magic of the one and only Stomp. Using everyday household items from paint

- 17 -

cans and pipes to bin lids and brooms, eight energetic performers fused dance, percussion and comedy to create a feel-good rhythmic- spectacular, in this inventive and infectiously entertaining show. Featuring new routines, new music and new choreography not seen in Sheffield before, Stomp was fresher, faster and funnier than ever before. You had no idea what would make you laugh out loud next. Each cast member interacted with ease, all having a background in dance to music – some self-taught. But being part of the audience was just as interactive as being a cast member – clapping hands and attempting ‘funky finger clicks’ caused a fit of giggles amongst the crowds. A terrific show for the whole family to enjoy.

GOOD VIBRATIONS Words : Jessica F ogarty

Good Vibrations is home to multi award winning artists covering all aspects of tattooing from realism to traditional and everything in between. It’s Sheffield’s premier custom studio. Portrait perfection… The paper is nothing special – a medium weight cotton cartridge, a lightly textured finish, fairly robust and, best of all, not too expensive.

I use a mix of pencils and powdered graphite. Powdered graphite with a tortillion works wonders on medium and light tones. Pencils: prismacolor ebony, staedler lumograph and rotring tikky 0.5mm (2B leads). Erasers: Tombow mono zero, Koh-i-Moor kneadable and Sanford Artgum. First thing is composition – not putting pencil to paper. Think about what you’re after and how to represent the concept. No matter how good an artist you are, consider your options.

General tips: • • • •

Detail work with the tikky, darker tones with the prismacolor and lumograph. Don’t overwork with the tortillion and be heavy handed. Pick back tones and strengthen highlights with the kneadable eraser and use the artgum to clean up your work. Have paper to cover areas already worked to stop smudging and regularly turn your work and reference material to assess your accuracy. Turning a picture upside down or looking at it through a mirror will reveal those errors you made – your eyes try to make sense of what you’re doing and will compound an error you’ve already made in drawing.

2014 has been a big year for Peace, playing main stage at Reading and Leeds festival, maybe the highlight. The group have also announced the release of their sophomore album ‘Happy People’ which will coincide with the band going on tour in 2015. I’m pleased to say they will also be in Sheffield at The Queens Social club on January 30th. One of the most sought after acts in the UK sprang onto the scene in 2012. A heart-on-sleeve, indie, zesty group have some powerful, uplifting choruses which add to their on stage charisma and powerful stage presence. Explains a lot considering their armies of fans up and down the country. The band still have their cheekiness, energy and their enigmatic appeal, but the music has developed since the band were playing low-paid gigs at indie clubs. ‘Happy People’ strays away from your classic indie music and has the kind of bounce that is more indie-pop. It will get people bouncing. ‘’I think it’s because we’ve got such short attention spans that we just always wanted to do something new and exciting’’ said Harry Koisser the groups lead singer. This new kind of adventure in song writing could be inspired by their last tour. Travelling around Europe to countries you have never been before, surely opens the door to new experiences. Hence why the new album was written on the road.

Gaz Coombes Matador Words : E dward Wade

Gaz Coombes has announced the release of his self-produced follow up album to ‘Here Come The Bombs’. ‘Matador’. The former lead singer and guitarist of Supergrass has shown his immense talent by recording the tracks in his home studio playing everything himself bar the drums on four tracks. Coombes has been on a bit of a journey since he parted ways with Supergrass in 2012. The songwriter is really starting to come into his own, you get the sense that he is an artiste who genuinely enjoys his work. Some of the sounds make you feel like Coombes is really pushing musical boundaries. Tracks like ‘Buffalo’ are a new classic, contemporary kind of sound. The album is definitely a departure from Supergrass sound ‘Alright.’ It is as though ‘Matador’ is a Gaz Coombes Supergrass, of the 21st century. In comparison to his first solo album the sounds are much more alternative, whilst keeping the acoustic sound. One problem I did find was, some of the slower more melodic tracks come too soon after the upbeat acoustic songs. The release of the new album will coincide with a new European and UK tour. It will be interesting to see which instrument the multitalented man will play when up on stage.

ANNIE

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM:

Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without some festive family fun - and what says family fun more than everybody’s favourite musical orphan Annie! This modern re-boot of the 1982 classic sees Will Gluck taking to the director’s seat. Set in modern day New York, all the old favourites are back - Jamie Fox stars as Will Stacks (a hip Daddy Starbucks) and, of course, Annie, played by the adorable Quvenzhané Wallis, whose search for her parents will tug at the heart-strings of even the most bitter of Scrooges. You might even leave the cinema rapping “Tomorrow, Tomorrow”.

The Night at the Museum gang are back in the wackiest, most exhilarating adventure so far. The magical powers of The Tablet of Ankmenrah are about to be lost forever and Larry (Ben Stiller) will do anything to save them. Secret of the Tomb sees the gang travelling to London to embark on a global mission to save the day. One of Robin Williams last films poignantly sees him doing what he was best known for: good, old-fashioned family fun.

nd

The final instalment in Peter Jackson’s trilogy is finally here - and the last battle promises to be the most epic so far. The deadly Smaug is on the loose, threatening to ravage the men, women and children of Lake-Town. Elsewhere, enemy Sauron has returned to Middle-Earth and is sending his army of minions to attack Lonely Mountain. Will Frodo and the Dwarves defeat the forces of evil once and for all? You’ll have to watch the film to find out, but with the biggest budget in movie history, the final instalment is set to be the most spectacular journey of all.

EXODUS:

GODS & KINGS Release Date: (3D) – December 19th

Legendary director Ridley Scott has turned his hand to biblical epics, telling the story of one man’s battle against the Egyptian empire. A story of emancipation and survival, Scott’s adaptation of Moses’ epic story will sweep you along on his journey. With cutting-edge special effects, Scott creates an immersive 3D experience which will leave you breathless.

UNBROKEN

Release Date: December 25th Angela Jolie’s second directorial turn recounts the life of olympic-runner-come-war-hero Louis Zamperini, whose survival of a planecrash was given special poignance when he was later taken captive by the Japanese Army in WWll. His experience is one that truly has to be seen to be believed. Based on a book by Laura Hillenbrand and with a screenplay crafted by the Cohen Brothers, Unbroken has oscar-bait written all over it.

In spite of his youth, Eddie Redmayne seems to have become something of a veteran of the British acting industry and his stellar performance in this Stephen Hawking’s biopic shows us why. The film chronicles Hawking’s early years and his relationship with literature student Jane Wilde (Felicity Jones.) When the two meet at a party at Cambridge University in the 1960’s the connection between them is instant and all-consuming. But then tragedy strikes when Hawking’s is diagnosed with motor neurone disease and given just two years to live. The couple face an uncertain future together and must fight for their relationship to survive. Part-love story, part analysis of marriage, The theory of Everything is ferociously raw and tender in equal amounts, revealing the little-known private battles of one of our must enduring geniuses.

BIRDMAN

Release Date: January 2nd Michael Keaton stars as washed up actor Riggan Thomas, whose stint as a former superhero in the Birdman trilogy is a long-forgotten memory. But now he has a chance to prove himself as more than a bygone film star with a stage adaptation of a Raymond Carver short story. His whole future hangs on the success of the production, but his co-workers aren’t exactly making it an easier for him. With the self-absorbed method actor Mike Shiner as one of his co-stars and the reappearance of his daughter-come-assistant, a recovering drug addict with a bitter worldview (played by the ever-charming Emma Stone) just making it to the opening night seems like it’d be an achievement. The director of the stunning Babel delivers another astoundingly affecting film, made all the more powerful by singularly transformative performance by Michael Keaton. A black comedy with a lot of heart.

- 23 -

The dimwits are back 20 years after they first goofed their way into our hearts. Jim Carey and Jeff Daniels reprise their infamous roles as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne to provide viewers with a film that they are sure to belly-laugh their way through. This time the lovable idiots are on a mission to track down Harry’s long-last daughter. What’s more, Lloyd is in love with her. It’s not as icky as it sounds (or is it?) Just make sure you don’t snort in your popcorn.

INTO THE WOODS

Release Date: January 9th A star-studded cast headlines James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim’s beloved Broadway musical. In this amalgamation of grim fairytales, expect to see your favourite actors and characters as you’ve never seen them before: James Corden and Emily Blunt star as a childless couple, cursed by the wicked witch (Meryl Streep.) On their adventure, they encounter girl-next-door Anna Kendrick as Cinderella and face the wrath of the big bad wolf ( Johnny Depp.) It makes for fantastically entertaining family fun, with glittering performances from the ensemble. With Chicago’s Rob Marshall at the helm, we can guarantee a top-quality musical production. But will this fairytale have a happy ending?

THE WOMAN IN BLACK 2: ANGELS OF DEATH Release Date: January 1st

The Woman In Black is everywhere - first she was a book, next she was a play, then she was a film starring Daniel Radcliffe, now she’s a sequel and she’s coming to haunt a cinema near you this January. Set 40 years after the original story, a group of children are evacuated from WWI London to Eel Marsh House. Starring War Horses’ Jeremy Irving, the sequel is sure to offer as many gothic delights as its predecessor, as the evil within is unleashed.

SISTACHIC Long-lasting, luxury locks Fed up of back-combing and using clip-in extensions to give your hair va-va-voom? If you’re looking for a natural looking volume boost, then visit Sistachic for the best in longlasting, non-damaging weaves. The Handsworth based salon opened its doors in spring this year and the demand has continued to grow. “We’re almost fully booked until 2015” business founder Kim told us. She and her sister Robyn run the salon together, alongside CLAWS @ Sistachic by Meg Taylor and LVL lashes by Amour Beaute. “Initially we just learnt to weave so we could fit the extensions on each other” Kim told us. “But when friends and family saw the finished product, they all wanted to try it too. “We got so busy we gave up our full-time jobs and found a premises.” Sistachic offers free in-salon consultations for anyone wanting to find out more. Kim told us: “We’ll show you exactly how the bonds and weaves are fitted, the colour matching process and talk you through maintenance. “We use our own specialist method of weaving which is unique to us. We don’t use plaits or glues to apply to the hair – just a simple yet effective method of application that is secure, comfortable and easily maintained.” Sistachic use only the finest 100 per cent human Virgin Remy hair weaves to give lovely thick, full and natural appearance that will last in your hair for months. There’s a variety of weave colours to choose from – you have the choice of a full head colour to perfectly match your current shade, or add in highlights, an ombre finish or a brave shade of red, pink, purple or even blue.

WOR DS: JE SSI CA FOG A R TY

The fitting process takes around one hour 30 minutes, then all you need is a maintenance check every six to eight weeks to tighten the bonds to prevent the natural hair from knotting at the root area. If you need any repairs, just call in to the salon – no appointment necessary – and Robyn and Kim will fix for free. Weave prices start from £190 for 14 inches. Maintenance checks cost £35 and removal is £30. If you want to get your beauty fix while at the salon, visit CLAWS @ Sistachic who can create beautiful and unique nail enhancements, whilst always ensuring your natural nails stay healthy. Treatment prices start from £13. Amour Beaute, also located in the salon, offer LVL lashes with immediate results. They’re a more cost effective and lower maintenance alternative to eyelash extensions – lasting up to six weeks for £45. For a limited time over the festive season and New Year, Sistachic also have an in-salon makeup artist offering MAC application. Whether it’s a treat for yourself or someone special this Christmas, book in now for your hair and beauty fix. Gift vouchers are also available.

Dressing your home for Christmas The festive season is just around the corner and thoughts are starting to wander to that star on the top of the tree or the subtle sparkle needed to bring your home to life this Christmas. But if you’re looking to sell this winter, what’s the best way to decorate without putting off potential buyers? Eadon, Lockwood and Riddle, one of Sheffield’s leading estate agents are on hand to stop you getting your tinsel in a tangle with their helpful tips on how to fill potential buyers with festive spirit with just one visit to your home.

Candles Candles are a fab way to create a warm, homely environment and can be positioned anywhere throughout the house. Think about having clusters of candles that vary in height and opt for neutral colours so potential buyers aren’t put off by bright hues that are not to their taste. Head outside and pick yourself a few sprigs of holly complete with red berries and weave them in and out of the candles to give your display a really subtle and classy Christmas twist. Although real leaves and berries look lovely at first, browning and dying branches soon follow so go for something that looks as natural as possible but will last the course. Add in a few fairly lights to brighten up that chilly winter evening and put a twinkle in the potential buyers eye.

No house is complete without a tree at Christmas but if your property is on the market this festive season there are a few do’s and don’ts when it comes to the all-important centre piece. A real tree will fill your home with the wonderful fresh pine smell that can only be associated with Christmas but make sure you hoover up any lingering pine needles before your viewer arrives! Don’t overdo it on the decorations and stick to a colour theme…red with either silver or gold is always a safe bet! Tesco Direct Red Baubles - £5 for 40

The Festive Home Throughout Red cushions are a really easy way to bring a splash of seasonal colour to the house without being too loud and in your face. Only use them in rooms that are neutral in colour so as not to cause a clash. The kitchen is always a huge selling point to a potential buyer so don’t neglect it when decorating your house for Christmas. A few subtle hints dotted around will bring a smile to a buyers face and some homemade mince pies fresh out the oven probably wouldn’t go down too badly either!

Surviving Christmas Surviving a modern day Christmas can be a real challenge for humans, but just imagine how difficult it is if you’re a houseplant. You’ve been reluctantly forced to flower, grown in a light controlled polytunnel and you’ve been force fed with growth stunting hormones to ensure you’re not too straggly when flowering on Mrs Cratchit’s table …. and here’s me feeling sorry for those turkeys! It seems such a shame that after all that effort; you go and kill the poor thing after just one week of taking custody. This year its going to be different, because whether giving or receiving a houseplant this festive yuletide, help is at hand with my top tips for keeping them alive (till new year at least!). House plants give such a wonderful display, and are sure to last longer than a bunch of flowers. Choose from large flowering Cyclamen, brightly coloured Azaleas, sweetly scented Jasmine and of course the traditional Poinsettia. Oh. And don’t forget about bulbs, ‘Paperwhite’ Narcissus are synonymous with Christmas, and forced Hyacinths too, but I can appreciate that their strong scent is best savoured in spring. Before we go on to the care of houseplants, lets just clear one thing up; houseplants hate houses! Dry central heating, low light levels and draughts are all things houseplants really don’t like, as most of these plants come from very humid, tropical parts of the world. The best way to ensure your flowers bloom for longer and your leaves don’t go brown at the tips, is to ensure the right conditions for survival.

Have a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year! Lee.

Avoid direct sunshine Water plants by plunging them into a bowl of tepid (not cold) water and then allowing the water to fully drain out from the pot before returning to its location

Create a ‘plant area’ where groups of plants can be stood together, this will create more humidity

Remove faded flowers to prevent disease and to promote flowering

- 41 -

Avoid placing plants in a draughty location such as windowsills or near to a frequently opened door (they wont appreciate the large fluctuations in temperature)

Winter survival tips

Ensure the compost never dries out or is too saturated, water little and often

Avoid hotspots such as in front of, or above a radiator or fire

Azaleas like humid conditions, so stand these on a tray of gravel filled with water (but ensure plants are not sat in water)

FOODS YOU CAN WORDS : J e ssi c a F o gart y

Chic meets Sheffield’s Bunmi Scott, founder of foodsyoucan.com – a resource website for multiple food intolerances, allergies, lifestyle and health…

How could the food industry improve the free-from offering? Supermarkets need to lower their prices – I understand ingredients are more expensive but a gluten free loaf of bread for example is twice or even three times more expensive than a standard loaf. Also, packaging needs to improve, as many products are suitable for multi-allergies but don’t advertise this.

What inspired you to launch Foods You Can? Nine years ago I found out I had food intolerances and allergies. I was 24 years old and didn’t want to spend hours trekking round four or five supermarkets looking at food labels. With a background in marketing, I had an idea to launch a website which listed where you can buy specific foods for people with intolerances. I got in touch with leading businessman Douglas Gurr, the president of Amazon China, who liked my idea and passion so decided to invest and become my business mentor.

What are the most common allergies and intolerances? There are so many, but very common ones include: gluten, dairy, nut, yeast and soya Do Free-From foods have more nutritional benefits? A lot of celebrities set Free-From trends but often people don’t do their research to discover the health impacts. For example, the chances are you’ll gain weight not lose weight going Gluten-Free. Most Free-From Gluten choices are higher in sugar, fats and carbohydrates than your standard options. It’s important to check the nutritional information on the food labels to make sure you’re eating a balanced diet. The Foods You Can website aims to provide as much information as possible on Free-From foods so people can make an informed decision.

How has the business grown? From the initial concept of listing free-from-food stockists, we’ve expanded the site to include product comparison. You can now see which stores offer the lowest prices, plus discounts, promotions, daily deals and vouchers. As well as that, you can now search for places to eat that offer free-from foods throughout the UK.

How do people get in touch for more advice? We have a 24 hour live chat service on the site, so we can offer bespoke advice. We get clients from all over the country asking us where to go for the best Vegan restaurants in Sheffield, or which ingredients to use to make a Gluten-Free lasagne etc. At the moment we’re receiving a lot of requests about cooking Free-From at Christmas so we’ve launched a recipe section on our website – they’re free to download. We have just moved from Ecclesall Road to a bigger premises on Chesterfield Road – our team is growing and growing. We have up to 40,000 visitors on our site each month.

Do you think there are enough establishments offering free-from foods? Yes, I do think that supermarkets and restaurants are now offering much more variety of free-from foods but not enough of them offer multi-allergy options. For example I’m dairy free and I’m vegan but many dishes will only cater for one or the other, not both. How do you know if you have a food intolerance or multiple allergies? Many people are non-believers so my aim is to educate on food allergies and intolerances. After eating a meal, many think it’s normal to feel full or bloated but the chances are you have an intolerance. Another service we offer is food testing – you can come to us, we’ll come to you for a blood test, or we can send you a non-bloodtest home kit. We send the tests to a lab and invite you to discuss the results with us.

MOTORING

So what do you know about your parts?

WRITTEN By Alistair Hague motoring expert at CLP Automotive, Sheffield.

OEM vs OE vs Aftermarket

A

t some point or another, your vehicle will need to be serviced or repaired which usually involves parts of your car being replaced. The process of finding a garage that you trust can be difficult enough without having to then make the decision about the vehicle parts that will be used. OEM refers to the original equipment manufacturer, for example Bosch or Pagid etc. These parts are made by the same company, the same way, with the same material as the manufacturer specifies. OEM parts will come in the original manufacturer packaging and stamped with their logo.

packaged with the vehicle manufacturer’s logo however the quality and fit of the part will be the same as OEM parts. Why Would You Choose OEM Parts? OEM parts provide you with the highest savings without having to compromise the quality. As the parts come from the manufacturer direct, they are of high quality but tend to be less expensive. When and Why Would You Choose OE Parts? There is a common misconception that using an independent car garage (such as CLP)

Main vehicle manufacturers, for example, BMW, Audi and VW contract the part with their specific specifications and design to part manufacturers such as Bosch and Pagid. Instead, these parts will be stamped and

- 54 -

to service your new car will invalidate the warranty. This is not true. At CLP, we service cars according to the manufacturer’s recommended schedule and criteria using only manufacturer approved parts – OE parts ensuring the warranty remains valid. Aftermarket Parts Aftermarket parts are produced to serve the same purpose as OE and OEM parts but will be different in look and could be made with different materials. Obviously, these parts will be less expensive but the quality will vary. Some aftermarket parts are inferior because of the use of lower-quality materials. Therefore, it is best to pay that little bit extra for OEM parts in exchange for good quality.

The Flux Capacitor. Chic meets motoring expert and Fifth Gear presenter Jonny Smith as he unveils the first npower rapid charging point at Meadowhall Shopping Centre… Word s: J e ssi c a F o gart y

November saw the official launch of the first npower rapid charging point to be installed at Sheffield’s Meadowhall shopping complex, as part of the innovative Electric Vehicles Inmotion! scheme currently being rolled out across South Yorkshire. The charging point was officially unveiled by British motoring journalist and television presenter Jonny Smith, who is currently working on a project to build Europe’s fastest street legal EV, the ‘Flux Capacitor’, sponsored by npower. Tell us about your creation, The Flux Capacitor? It’s a 1970's modified Enfield 8,000 – set to be Europe’s fastest street legal electric car. I have a background in classic and custom cars so three years ago I had the idea to build a hot-rod electric car. Instead of ripping apart a modern car, I decided to look at cars that had been and gone in history. I fell for the Enfield 8,000 because it’s a British made car that has been almost forgotton about – it wasn’t designed to go fast and it looks weird too.

How fast will it go? It has 125 times more power than when it was first made. It is street legal but it’s designed to go fast not to be used to run to the chippy and back. The option is there though. We’ve not started racing just yet so the top speed is to be confirmed. Are there enough charging points for domestic electric cars? I have seen an increase in the number of charging stations and more importantly a reduction in the time it takes to charge. Most people are sceptical of new things and are put-off buying an electric car because they worry they’ll run out of charge and because of the expense. However most people commute less than ten miles per day so it wouldn’t be a problem. I can drive from Sheffield to Lincoln with just one stop-off. It takes around 20 minutes to charge – I can grab a bite to eat and have a toilet stop in this time. Whereas previously, it could have taken anything up to four hours to charge. Was being a motoring journalist always your dream career? I was good at English at school and I grew up

- 56 -

around cars so I just kind of fell in to it. This is the only career I’ve ever known. I couldn’t imagine doing anything different. What do you prefer – writing motor articles or presenting motoring shows? Ooh good question. Both have taken me to interesting places – posh and dangerous. Writing is my first love but presenting is exciting. Although you have to repeat yourself a lot which is annoying. You’ve owned more than 120 cars in your lifetime. Do you have a favourite? The best was the very first car I bought and I’ve still got it – a 1967 Beatle 1500. It’s sentimental more than anything. It has a special place in my heart. I’m hoping it will be a family heirloom that my kids might like. What’s next for you in 2015? Racing my Flux Capacitor is going to be a very involved project. I’ll also be busy filming the 15th series of Fifth Gear and a new US show I’m presenting called Mud Sweat and Gears which launches in January. If this is a success hopefully I’ll be busy filming for the rest of the year. Watch this space.

STEEL CITY SAUCE Yorkshire’s favourite spicy sauce launches cook book Beloved Yorkshire sauce, Henderson’s Relish, released a brand new cook book in November (14) featuring a huge variety of delicious recipes inspired by the spicy sauce. Made in Sheffield for 130 years, Henderson’s Relish is synonymous with the Steel City, and has a proud place on every kitchen table across the region. A family business still blending to Henry Henderson’s original recipe (a secret known only to three living people) the spicy sauce is one of a kind, and has inspired not only food but art, music and literature as well. The Henderson’s Relish Cookbook features exciting recipes by chefs, famous figures and local enthusiasts, from Yorkshire

brisket, to casseroles and pies as well as the more innovative marinated beef Asian spring rolls and intriguing dessert creations. There’s even a couple of Hendo’s cocktails. The book also delves into the history and mystery of the sauce, taking a look at the cultural icons that have been inspired and comforted by a splash of Hendo’s, from Richard Hawley to Pete McKee and Kid Acne, among others. “It’s like Worcester sauce but a million times better.” - Matt Helders, Arctic Monkeys The Henderson’s Relish Cook Book is available from www.amazon.co.uk and Henderson’s Relish, 2 Parkway Rise, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S9 4WQ, 0114 242 5724.

To make the pastry, sift the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl. Place in the fridge for a few minutes to chill. Cube the butter and stir into a bowl until each piece is well-coated with flour. Add the water, then, working quickly; use a knife to bring everything together to a rough dough. Gather the dough and then turn it onto a work surface. Squash the dough into a fat, flat sausage, without kneading. Wrap in cling film then chill in the fridge for 15 minutes. Lightly flour the work surface and pastry. Roll out the pastry in one direction until it is around 1cm thick and three times as long as it is wide. Straighten up the sides keeping the top & bottom edges as square as possible. Fold the bottom third of the pastry up, then the top third down, to make a block – the important thing is that the corners are nice and square. Roll out and fold again, repeating this four times in all. Chill the finished pastry for an hour, or ideally overnight before using.

Chop the garlic and onion into chunky pieces. Add the meat and herbs to the pan and fry to soften for a few minutes. Add the tomato purée, cover and simmer the stew for 1-1½ hours until the beef is almost tender and the sauce has thickened. Cool overnight if possible. Melt the butter in a large frying pan then add to the cooled pie filling and add to the pie dish.

To make the pie, preheat the oven to 200°C. Roll out the pastry to the thickness of two £1 coins and wide enough for the pie dish with some excess. Use a sharp knife to cut the pastry – if it’s too big it doesn’t matter. Lay the pastry over a rolling pin to lift it on to the pie. Press down gently to seal. Holding the knife blade horizontally, make a patterned edge by pressing down gently all around the edge of the pastry (this will help the layers in the pastry to puff up). Cut a couple of slits in the top of the pie to release the steam while cooking. Bake for 30 minutes, or until the filling is bubbling and the pastry is golden-brown and puffed all over.

YORKSHIRE’S BEST DRESSED LADY RACEGOER 2014

- 59 -

Julie Short from Beverley, Doncaster, is officially the best dressed lady racegoer in Yorkshire for 2014. She landed the coveted title at a glittering final at Doncaster, which brought together all nine winners of the individual best dressed lady competitions held at the county’s racecourses throughout the summer. Her outfit comprised of an elegant monochrome pencil dress with a peplum, finished off with black guipure lace trim, which Julie designed and made herself. She also wore a matching jacket, perfect for the autumnal weather conditions. Julie, who runs her own fascinator business, Divine Fascination, also created the striking head piece which completed the winning look. Accessories included hand-made lace gloves, along with shoes and hand bag from Dorothy Perkins. Reacting to her success, Julie said: “I am totally overwhelmed and in utter shock. Things like this just do not happen to me. “The outfits I design are very personal, so it is both humbling and flattering when other people also like what I have created. I can’t thank the judges enough for choosing me. What a day!” Head judge Helen McIlroy from the Best Western Premier Mount Pleasant Hotel in Doncaster said: “In truth any one of the ladies would have been a very worthy winner. “However we felt that Julie’s entire outfit was so beautifully coordinated and showed exceptional attention to detail. Also, the monochrome look is very much of the moment.” Julie received a luxury two night break in a Spa Suite with treatments included at the Best Western Premier Mount Pleasant Hotel in Doncaster, a £500 fashion voucher for Yasmine of Bawtry and Epworth and a fabulously stylish art deco diamond ring valued at £2,500, courtesy of loveVintageDiamonds.com. She will also be the face of Go Racing in Yorkshire for 2015, which promotes racing at the county’s nine racecourses.

Discover new talent. The Harley Exhibition: Saturday February 14 – Sunday April 12

Words : Jessica F ogarty

During spring 2015, The Harley Gallery will be host to an exhibition by fresh new talent and established favourites. The Harley Open Exhibition, running this year for the third time, is a biennial art competition which attracts entries from artists from across the country. Previous exhibitors have included established artists Richard Combes, Sarah Sharpe and Aran Illingworth, but anyone can enter this competition, whether professional or amateur. Lisa Gee, Director of The Harley Gallery, explains: “It’s really exciting to see the entries for The Harley Open Exhibition. “We receive a wonderful mix of pieces, from a wide range of different artists with different styles, different subjects and different experience. “It’s great to see pieces from practicing artists hung next to pieces by people who are new to making art. There’s a lot of talent out there.” The Open Exhibition will be on show from Saturday 14 February until Sunday 12 April 2015. This year, the exhibits will be chosen by two artists, James Green (as seen on Channel 4’s ’Portrait Artist of the Year 2013’) and Julian Bray, plus two curators, Lesley Beale, Lakeside Arts Centre Nottingham, and Kirstie Hamilton, Museums Sheffield. Prizes will include The Harley Prize, £750, sponsored by The Harley Foundation, The Judges Prize, £250, sponsored by Welbeck Estates Company, The People’s Prize, £250, sponsored by Caddick Construction and the Avonside Renewables Prize, £250. Further prizes have been sponsored by Creswell Crags, The School

of Artisan Food and The Welbeck Farm Shop. Debbie Watson, marketing manager at Caddick Construction, comments: “As the main contractor working to create a new high quality gallery building at Welbeck we are proud to sponsor The People’s Prize in this year’s open exhibition at The Harley Gallery. “Our team is currently completing work on site, which will display historic works from The Portland Collection, so it’s fitting that we be involved in the search for the East Midlands’ next budding artist.” Many of the works will be for sale, providing an excellent opportunity to buy original art. Arts Council England’s Own Art scheme is available for purchases from £100 to £2,000, and allows you to spread the cost of buying contemporary art. Visit The Harley Gallery from 14/02/2015 – 12/04/2015 to see The Harley Open Exhibition. The Gallery is free to enter, and has free parking. www.harleygallery.co.uk

ASIAN WEDDING FAIR MAGNA SOUTH YORKSHIRE 08.02.15 WORD S : JE S S IC A F O G AR T Y

The most awaited exhibition showcasing UK’s diverse fashion talent returns on the 8th February 2015. Moonlight and Chandni, leading Photography & Film, Event and Wedding Planners in South Yorkshire, will be sponsoring this fashion extravaganza for the second time. Based in the imperial area of Attercliffe, South Yorkshire, the sponsors had this to say: “We are absolutely delighted to be sponsoring such a highly recognized event. The turnout last year was incredible and hopefully it will be even better this time around.” Chandni and Moonlight, both respectable companies, specialise in planning Wedding Events and have been doing so for the past two years. The reason behind them sponsoring such an event is as said, “It links to our business, especially with it being in the Yorkshire region. To be honest, there are not many wedding exhibitions like this one and I’m really glad that we’ve secured this position as sponsors, because it helps businesses like ours and others based in the North reach more customers.” The previous Asian Wedding Fair, which took place on the 2nd February 2014, had a turnout of approximately 3,000 people. Initially expecting to be the biggest Wedding Fair in South Yorkshire, it knocked those figures by becoming the biggest Wedding Fair in the whole of Yorkshire. Its scale was so vast that ARY, one of the most popular and watched Asian Channels in the world, covered and broadcasted the event. Unexpectedly, this meant that the Fair was being broadcasted internationally across the world. India, Pakistan, and the UK were just some of the countries that participated in viewing the event from their television sets. The grand venue took place at the Magna Centre, a huge building for exhibitions and conferences. As intended, the location was a big statement for businesses across the UK. This is because many distributors of wedding related products were not having as much success in their local areas, especially up in the North of England. The Asian Wedding Fair was a chance for these talents to showcase their majestic embroidery and stunning wedding sets to a much wider audience.

The entertainment was first-class as headlining acts included: Britain’s Got Talent’s hilarious act Signature and artists Khiza and Sonny J. There were food stalls also available for people to discover and relinquish their taste buds. Out of the norm, there was also a play area for children. This hadn’t been done previously by any other exhibition and was well applauded by parents as this catered to a family event. In addition to this, the community spirit prospered more than usual. The local and national businesses managed to come together and present their reputable work to people far and wide from the UK. Along with this, it brought a new sense of closeness by having a similar impact upon customers. The major selling point of this venue was the fact that Zaf Shabir showcased a fashion show at the Fair. Zaf Shabir, a prominent figure in the modelling industry, produced his own fashion show at the venue to promote and advertise the local fashioning industry. Zaf, one of the most well-known South Asian models in the UK, had this to say: “I believe it was really important for me to attend this event. First, I was conscious about the idea, simply because the venue didn’t seem like it would attract the numbers it did. But…I was surprised and proud at the turnout. It went really well. Beautiful gowns and luxurious accessories were worn on - 23 -

the catwalk, many produced by local designers from Sheffield, Bradford, Birmingham, Manchester, and London.” The extravaganza returns on the 15th February 2015. As expected, it will be bigger and better than before. The Asian Wedding Fair has decided to showcase magnificent talent through using shell booths alone. Last year, there were shell booths alongside tables when presenting various wedding materials. The decision for this is to enable a greater sense of professionalism and make it easier to showcase talented work to attendees. Food will be available like previously, plus Halaal flaring, fire breathing and a Muslim marriage event. Also, with much excitement, it is confirmed that the event will be advertised and broadcasted by TWO Sky Channels. Expecting a larger turnout than last year, it is an event that wedding goers, brides, grooms, families, wedding industry businesses and people generally interested in art cannot afford to miss. You’ll regret it if you do. For sponsorship opportunities and advertising call: 0114 256 0991 / 07800 558 337 Email: info@asianweddingfair.com or visit: www.asianweddingfair.com

NEW YEAR NEW YOU www.happybehealthy.co.uk info@happybehealthy.co.uk Facebook: happybehealthyuk

Was ‘lose weight’ on your New Year’s Resolution list at the beginning of the year? Did you achieve this goal? If not, don’t despair there is always next year! As we approach the last chapter of 2014 think about why you may not have achieved your fitness goals. Perhaps it was lack of motivation or maybe you didn’t know where to begin. Take the next few weeks to think about how you are going to achieve your fitness goals in 2015. A problem many people face is they jump straight into a healthy regime for example they cut out all ‘bad food’, do a cardio workout 5 times a week and then eventually get bored of this and give up! Rushing into a new regime without thinking and planning it is a common mistake lots of people make. In this article I’m going to talk about what to do over the next few weeks to prepare yourself for losing weight in the New Year.

Words: Av i Sam r a

Step 1. Write down what it is you want to achieve. For example, if you want to lose weight, write down how much weight you want to lose in total and then break it down into how much weight you want to lose in a month, three months etc. Breaking your weight loss goals down makes it much more achievable and less daunting! Step 2. Plan how many times a week you will exercise and at what time. Create a timetable for exercising. We all lead busy lives and planning ahead will enable you to be more organised. Also think about what you enjoy, there is no point in joining a boxing class if you don’t like boxing! You may enjoy dancing so look for classes in your local area.

- 21 -

Step 3. Write a food diary of exactly what you eat at the moment. Often people don’t realise how much they are eating and how badly they are eating unless they write it down. Once you have done this you will be able to clearly see where you are going wrong and some patterns may emerge with your eating habits. For example, are you snacking on unhealthy foods late at night in which case you may need to address what you eat for your evening meals as they may not be satisfying you.

Step 4. Research into some healthy, nutritious meals to make. Being healthy doesn’t mean being boring! Get a list of delicious recipes together that you can try in the New Year. Think about how you will incorporate healthy eating into your daily life. For example this may mean making your own lunch and taking it to work. You may have a sweet tooth so look into some healthy treat recipes too!

Step 5. Take pictures of yourself! There is nothing better than looking at the progress as you proceed on your fitness journey. Take pictures now and then after one month etc and you will see how your body is changing and that is a fantastic motivator.

The Taking of Tiger Mountain RELEASED 24TH DECEMBER

Regarded as ‘one of the masters of Asian cinematography’, director Tsui Hark will release his newest project this Christmas. The Taking of Tiger Mountain is an epic, 3D war film that has been shot in the Greater Khingan mountain range in north-east China. The film is based on the novel ‘Tracks in the Snowy Forest’ by Qu Bo, which told the story of a communist state soldier who disguised himself as a bandit to infiltrate a local gang that hid in the local mountain. Originally a propaganda story, it will be interesting to see how Hark, known for challenging authority in his films, puts his spin on this tale whilst also incorporating battle and war scenes.

BACK TO twenty

RELEASED 9 decEMBER

RELEASED 9 january

RELEASED 22nd january

Based on the 2007 Thai horror film of the same name, director Bhushan Patel has recruited Bollywood heartthrobs Bupashi Busa and Karan Singh Grover to star in his version of Alone. Not for the faint-hearted, the film tells the story of a pair of conjoined twins and their bittersweet relationship. A failed separation operation leaves one twin dead, and whilst the other tries to move on with her life, she feels guilt at being the surviving twin. The horror begins when the spirit of her dead sister starts to furiously meddle in her life…

A film for all sports fans, Tevar is a remake of the 2003 Telugu hit ‘Okkadu’, which received numerous award nominations for both acting and production at the time. Arjun Kapoor, son of producer Boney Kapoor and star of ‘Ishaqzaade’, is the lead character Pintoo in Tevar, a story that, on the surface, is the heart-warming tale of a man determined to do well in the contact sport, Kabbadi. However, the story develops into a complex web of family relationships, love and drama. Sonakshi Sinha of ‘Dabangg’ and ‘Rowdy Rathore’ fame stars as Pintoo’s love interest.

If you’re looking for a light-hearted, fun and silly film to make you smile on a cold January day, Twenty Once Again is a good choice. A Chinese remake of the 2014 Korean hit ‘Miss Granny’, the film is based around a woman in her seventies who goes back to being in her twenties after having her photo taken at a mysterious photo booth. Lu Han, known for being a member of the Korean-Chinese boy band EXO, will play the grandson in this Chinese comedy, whilst Asian film legend Kuei Ya-Lei will star in the lead role.

FOOD REVIEW

ALIGARH A LUXURY NEW DINING EXPERIENCE FOR SHEFFIELD Slide into a sleek circular booth or candle-lit table and prepare to be wined and dined in style…

Aligarh has just opened its doors in Crosspool, offering a mouthwatering menu of traditional and modern delights straight from the sub-continent. Formally the location of Artisan Restaurant – which had rave reviews in the town before its closure – we knew Aligarh was under pressure to impress. The décor has been re-vamped but the intimate, romantic ambience remains with low level lighting and luxurious furnishings. We visited on a Wednesday evening and the restaurant was surprisingly full – our expectations grew seeing such demand from customers just a few weeks after opening to the public. After receiving a warm welcome from our waiter, we ordered our drinks and tucked in to the poppadum’s and pickle tray while we browsed the menu. The Tikka King Prawns caught our eye on the starters menu, as well as the Onion Bhaji – I’m confident you can always judge the talents of an Indian chef solely on the taste and texture of their bhajis – an Indian favourite for most. The starters arrived promptly – the three large Tikka King Prawns were marinated with yogurt, vinegar, special herbs, then grilled over charcoal and served with a Hyderabadi side sauce. Delicious! The Onion Bahji’s didn’t disappoint either – two circular onion rings dipped into spicy batter and deep fried until golden then served with a fresh fruity side salad. For main course we opted for the Shahi Murgh Tandoori and Meat Hyderabadi. The Tandoori consisted of chicken marinated in a spice yogurt and cooked on charcoal. It’s then cooked with tomatoes, onions, green chilli, garlic, coriander, ginger and peppers and arrives at the table served on a sizzling plate, on a bed of onions with a side Hyderabi sauce. You’ll find the Meat Hyderabi dish on the chef special’s menu – we opted for chicken cooked with tangy spices, green coriander, fresh cream, yogurt, tomatoes, garlic and ginger in bay leaf juices, cardamom and cloves. This dish is full of distinctive flavours. Collecting our clean plates, the waiter informs us Aligarh uses only the highest quality and freshest ingredients which are blended seamlessly to create a cocktail of different flavours. We were offered dessert – but unfortunately had no room to fit in a tempting treat or coffee. Next time! We’re sure to be back again soon – the food is rich in taste and full of flavour coupled with great service in an elegant setting at an affordable price. There are plans to move upstairs in the near future too. The family run business plan to use the first floor space as a private function room and cooking school. Keep a watch in Your Sheffield News for more details coming soon. Words : Jessica F ogarty

onveniently situated right next to the Hillsborough Park tram stop, newly opened Spice Story offers delicious authentic Indian cuisine. Welcomed with warm and attentive service we were seated comfortably amongst the sophisticated and calm ambience. Although initially disappointed to hear that the Lamb Tikka was not available that evening, my second choice starter of King Prawn Tandoori more than made up for it. Set on a bed of salad the prawn dish exploded with flavour with enough kick to satisfy without overpowering the complimenting array of luscious tastes. The portion size was spot on without leaving me too full for my next course, the prawn tandoori was the perfect taster to begin the evening. Meanwhile, my dining partner opted for Paneer Pakura, an Indian delicacy of cheese dipped in batter and fried, he thoroughly enjoyed the perfect textures of the crispy outside and the melting softness of the inside. Both picking from the chef ’s specials for our main courses we were impressed to see such a varied selection catering to all tastes and fancies. In the mood for a mild curry I opted for a Chicken Korma dish; sometimes at risk of being slightly bland this Korma was delightfully rich with strong flavours and perfectly tender chicken. Served with a platter of soft, warm garlic naan bread and rice the dish was delightfully smooth and creamy, complementing the dishes signature nutty flavours. With a slightly more impressive threshold for spice than my own, my dining partner chose Shah-e-jahan for main course, a

dish consisting of king prawns, lamb, chicken and mushrooms, a pleasantly spicy dish rich with a complimenting variety of textures and tastes. Making a point of introducing traditional North Indian desserts to their customers, which is a rarity in restaurants of this cuisine, Spice Story offers a selection of authentic sweet dishes with hopes to further expand. Keen to try something new, and both lovers of sweet things, we browsed the menu struggling to settle on just one dessert each. Finally settling on Falooda with Kulfi for myself, a sweet spaghetti-esque dish enriched in cream and ice cream, I was delighted with my choice. As with every dish we’d been served the Falooda was bursting with flavours and left me in a state of total satisfaction. My dining partner chose Gulab Jamun with Kulfi Ice Cream for dessert and was in absolute awe of the delicious dish. Although served as a small portion, it was perfectly satisfying; the luscious hot sponge saturated with syrup combined beautifully with the refreshingly cold and sweet ice cream. All together the six courses alongside a few soft drinks came to the reasonable price of £38.68. Leaving the restaurant impressed with the quick and attentive service and smitten with the delicious food I would wholeheartedly recommend a visit for your next meal out. Spice Story is an authentic restaurant that, from my experience, offers above and beyond quality service and food.

The British Curry Awards 2014 Words: Jessica Fogarty

Bigger and better than ever before, the 10th British Curry Awards honoured the nation’s finest restaurants in spectacular style. Stars of stage and screen gathered at Battersea Evolution to see the industry’s finest chefs rewarded for their hard work in continuing to innovate and perfect the nation’s favourite dish. In a special video message played at the event, Prime Minister David Cameron said: “These awards are a great night for this country.Curry is one of our country’s greatest achievements and one of our most exciting exports too.” Hosted by TV’s Kate Silverton and Hardeep Singh Kohli, the awards helped showcase Britain’s finest culinary talent. This year, a phenomenal 206,378 public votes were received, with 2,641 restaurants being nominated. More than 1,600 guests packed into the lavish venue to celebrate the stars of the industry and crown this year’s champions.

This year’s Special Recognition Award was presented to one of the founding fathers of the British curry industry, Shams Uddin Khan of Maharani Restaurant in Clapham. Home Secretary Theresa May was this year’s guest of honour and said: “It’s not hard to see why the Prime Minister and others have called these the ‘Curry Oscars’. “The British curry industry really is one of Britain’s greatest success stories. Through hard work and innovation, you’ve built a vibrant industry, which generates wealth, promotes growth and employs tens of thousands of people.” The British Curry Awards was established by British entrepreneur and restaurateur Enam Ali MBE in 2005. He said, “These awards have changed the public’s perception of British curry and we are getting the recognition for providing truly world class cuisine.”
