I’ve had medical ultrasound before but I still wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the LoveLipo process. I was surprised at how relaxing the treatment was, and how lovely the staff were. It’s a really enjoyable, relaxing experience. After just six sessions of LoveLipo on my hips/tops of thighs I lost two and a half inches and my ‘saddlebags’ have reduced so much, that I’m now wearing size 12 trousers instead of 16. This treatment has been like a miracle I’m so impressed with the results that I’m starting another course of treatments on my stomach - so watch this space!

THE BIG DEALS Annie Mac
Public Enemy
Sister Sledge
Katy B
Radio One DJ Annie Mac has become something of an authority on the best new music on the dance scene. On Friday nights, over a million listeners tune in to hear her show and by Sunday, she plays a mellower choice of dance music to sooth listeners before bedtime. She quickly became a live DJ act and has made appearances at The University of Sheffield Student Union, as well as main stage slots at Global Gathering alongside Fat Boy Slim, Australia’s Stereosonic Festival and a midnight DJ set on Channel 4’s New Year’s Eve ‘House Party’. Annie Mac Presents (AMP) has become a popular brand and two of her yearly AMP compilation albums (2012 and 2013) have topped the iTunes charts. For those who are not ready to go home after a long festival day, Annie Mac will keep you on your feet until the early hours with an outstanding mix of tunes.
These American heavy weights will be no stranger to old school hiphop fans who remember a time when it was cool to wear giant clocks as necklaces. Formed in the 80s, they first became famous for their politically charged lyrics and beats similar to contemporaries Run-D.M.C. Public Enemy are best known for singles, ‘Bring The Noise’ and ‘Fight The Power which were viewed as controversial at the time for endorsing black Muslim leader, Louis Farrakhan and more recently in 2007, ‘Harder Than You Think’ with a catchy, trumpet hook which, if you are not a Public Enemy fan, you are guaranteed to have heard on the London 2012 Olympic adverts.
Disco legends, Sister Sledge will be co-headlining with Public Enemy on Saturday night so get your flares on and dance to all their big hits including, ‘Lost In Music’, ‘He’s The Greatest Dancer’ and ‘We Are Family’. Since the release of their first album, ‘We are Family’, they have received over a hundred awards including Billboard Artist of the Year, Tokyo Music Festival Silver Award, and two Grammy Nominations, whilst the ‘We Are Family’ won the Grammy for Record of the Year. Sister Sledge continue to sell millions of records worldwide and do gigs in Asia, Africa, throughout Europe, the Middle East, South America, Australia and the United States.
Katy B rose to fame after single ‘Lights On’ featuring Ms. Dynamite (also playing Tramlines) reached number 4 in the UK charts and she picked up a Mercury nomination for debut album, ‘On A Mission’. Katy B started out in the London club scene and consequently had a gritty, underground dance sound laced with catchy pop vocals. Nowadays, she embraces a cleaner dance sound on her chart-topping second album with singles such as, ‘Crying For No Reason’ dominating the radio waves.

THE LOCALS Blessa
Friday – Sheffield Cathedral

Dreamy guitars combine with 80s-style indie to reveal a sound which at times sounds like what would have happened if The Smiths were fronted by a more optimistic, female vocalist. Blessa formed when vocalist Olivia met guitarist Alex whilst studying English Literature in Sheffield. They soon starting attracting critical acclaim from 6Music, NME and the Guardian and have recently released their double A-side single ‘Bloom’ and ‘Between Times’. ‘Bloom’ is the one to listen out for on Tramline’s opening day and will be wonderfully complimented by the Cathedral’s acoustics.
Hey Sholay
See Emily Play
Best described as a psychedelic rock band, Hey Sholay came to the attention of the music world when they won NME’s ‘Play At Exit Festival’ competition in 2011, before going on to win Drowned in Sound and BBC Radio 6’s, ‘Summer 2012’s Must See Band’ competition. Debut album ‘((O))’ was packed full of twinkling pop singles such as ‘Burning’ and ‘Wishbone’ as well as intense flurries of sound such as, ‘The Bears, The Clocks, The Bees’ and after a long breaks from giggging, it will be interesting to see what musical direction the band will take next. Who knows, Hey Sholay may honour our ears with their new material.
Those who have seen See Emily Play live at Tramlines before, will recall how captivating her performances are. From positively, bouncy guitar fuelled songs one moment, to dramatic and dark piano led tales of woe the next, Emily is a pop-rock singer-songwriter who will appeal to everyone. Her latest single, ‘What To Do’, was released this April and is guaranteed to launch her career as Sheffield’s next big thing.

Dnae & The Indigo Sound Project Saturday – Main Stage
A chilled, neo-soul band with a beautiful soul front woman who has been compared to the likes of Erykah Badu, Dnae & The Indigo Sound Project continue to impress Sheffield audiences. Their debut EP ‘Kingdoms’ is full of Summer-soaked tunes that are sure to get you in the festival spirit.

Renegade Brass Band

Made up of 8 horns, 2 percussionists, a scratch DJ and an MC, you will be struggling to find a more energetic and uplifting act than Renegade Brass Band! Fusing jazz, funk and hip-hop, this Sheffield act have gone from strength to strength with festival appearances including Secret Garden Party, Manchester International Jazz Festival, a headline slot at Sea Sessions Ireland and two appearances at Soundwave Croatia alongside DJ Shadow and DJ Yoda. They have also collaborated with hip-hop greats such as Rodney P and The Herbaliser. Renegade Brass Band’s debut album, ‘RBB: Rhymes, Beats & Brass’ will be released in July, whilst the single, ‘March Of The Dead Things’ came out last month, but first things first, get yourself to the Main Stage to see them live and kicking!

It’s been a crazy 12 months for you – including two sold out British arena tours. What have been the most memorable moments? The last 12 months has been mental but to be honest the last five or six years have been crazy. I haven’t stopped recording, releasing and touring.
“I have no plans to slow down. there’s no bigger buzz than being on stage.”
Performing on stage at Glastonbury with The Rolling Stones was probably my most memorable moment, but every single gig I do is a highlight. I don’t take any performance for granted. Whether I’m performing to a crowd of 10,000 in an arena, or 500 students at a university gig – they all appeal to me. It’s so humbling to know those people have paid to see you perform. Looking at your schedule for summer, it looks like the pressure shows no signs of letting up. Do you ever take a day off?
my coming of age. My fourth album was grunge and metal and my fifth, the new album, is back to club bangers and festival tunes. I’d describe it as a love letter to the 1990s.
I know, I’ve got between 50 and 60 gigs lined up for the summer which usually means eight gigs in every ten days. On those two days in between if I’m somewhere sunny, I’ll head to the beach for the morning with my wife or band, then have an early night and relax. A typical day is finishing my set in Ibiza at 2am – flying to Vienna at 6am – then getting a connecting flight to Finland because there’s no direct flight – doing around ten backstage interviews at 4pm – then it’s time to perform. I rarely get to see anything but the venue I perform at and the airport floor. The next time you see someone asleep on the airport floor – take a closer look – it’s probably me.
I’m intrigued to what the reaction is going to be from my fans. I think the kids will think it’s very fresh but for my adult fans, it will be more of a trip down memory lane. What is your favourite track on the album?
When do you find time to write your music?
It changes every week. I’ll have a favourite one week but when I’ve listened to it over and over again I get fed up of it and move on to another.
I write most of my music on EasyJet flights. If I can’t sleep, I’ll write.
Do you have any plans to slow down or take a break?
From a residency at Ibiza Rocks and BCM Magaluf to V Festival and Benicassim – what are you most excited for this summer – club sets or festivals?
I suppose I’ll just stop when it makes sense to – If fans stop buying my music or if venues stop booking me. For now, I love what I do and I have no plans to slow down. There’s no bigger buzz than being on stage.
They’re both good for different reasons. My club sets remind me of the old days when I was on Pirate Radio. They’re more like hosting a rave. But the live shows are more about lighting, special effects and putting on a full show. I’m lucky to be able to do both.
Was music always your dream career? No, I always wanted to be in films, rapping was just a hobby for me. I was just a kid when it all began, trying to fit in at school. I’ve changed so much since then though, I see myself as a credible singer and producer now. Singing and acting go hand in hand though, as does producing and directing. I think if you’ve got that creative ability you can do either.
Tell us about your new album – Live Life Living. You’ve set the standard high with your previous four albums including #1 platinum album ‘Playing in the Shadows’, and most recent gold selling album, ‘The Evolution of Man’. How do they differ?
Is an acting career a possibility for the future?
My albums have taken me on a journey. My first was hip-hop – I didn’t have a clue what I was doing I just enjoyed rapping as a hobby. My second was electro – I took this much more seriously; then my third album was full of rave – it represented
Yes, but nothing’s set in concrete yet so I can’t reveal anything just now. What I can tell you is that I’ve been approached for an acting role and I have some things planned. You heard it here first!

Ladies, Look good and feel great this Summer! Read Jane’s Story... BEFORE
‘‘
After many years of struggling with my weight I decided it was time to do something about it. I wanted to do some kind of exercise but wasn’t sure what I wanted to do as I had joined a gym in the past and it wasn’t for me. I had passed Ladyzone on Middlewood Road many times but never called in as I thought it would be just like any other gym. How wrong was I!!! I decided I would call in to see what it was all about and I was shown round and made to felt at ease. I made an appointment there and then for my induction. On the day of my induction, I was greeted by a friendly member of staff who immediately made me feel at ease.
AFTER
After doing the necessary measurements which were done professionally and without embarrassment I was taken round each piece of equipment to run though my programme which has been designed for me as an individual. Unlike large mixed gyms Ladyzone is for women only and is small and friendly. You don’t feel out of place or stared at. I lost 3st in three months, 6st in six months, 7st in seven months, and now after one year I have lost 8.5st! I have realised the importance of exercise, which I am now passing down to my children, so they too can lead a healthy lifestyle. The buzz you get from exercising really is amazing and I thoroughly enjoy going to Ladyzone. Since I joined, I have gained more confidence and self-esteem. I have not felt this good for a very long time, in fact I recently went swimming for the first time in 8 years!!! I never thought I would ever do that again. This is all thanks to Ladyzone and the help and encouragement that I have received since joining. If you are thinking of joining a gym think Ladyzone. I highly recommend it.

It’s been a whirlwind year for Jess (21), Amira (18), Asami (18) and Shereen (17) - four feisty ladies that make up new British girlband, Neon Jungle. As well as having three chart hits firmly under their belt, the girls have just signed a deal with RCA Records in America after they were handpicked by iconic lingerie brand Victoria’s Secret to perform at their legendary fashion show in New York. And if that wasn’t enough, the girls have also toured with Jessie J, have been snapped up by model agency Storm, and have been confirmed to perform at a series of festivals this summer. Words: Jessica Fogarty
How did you all meet? We were put in a room together at auditions in London. Two of us were scouted while out shopping and two of us were scouted from YouTube. Such a fairy-tale. Tell us about your debut album, Welcome to the Jungle? It’s a diverse album that we produced in NYC. It features influences from all four band members – we’re all so different but it works. Your latest single, Louder, is a move away from your upbeat tracks. Why the change of direction? It’s a stripped back mid-tempo number – a move away from the catchy dance beats people know us for. A lot of people will be able to relate to the lyrics. It’s about drowning out feelings and emotions - not being in control of the way you feel because of someone else and wanting to turn everything up louder to escape that. People expected our fourth single to be another dance track but it was always in our plans to release a slower song and surprise people. It’s still got the energy and power but in a more subtle way.

bought her music and watched her on YouTube for years. She’s so grounded and easy to get along with though. As soon as we met her, we felt like we’d known her for years. Have you ever been star-struck?
What is your favourite track on the album? It depends what mood we’re in. We like Louder because it’s more easy listening before bed but we prefer the more upbeat songs if we’re getting ready to go out. How do you deal with success at such a young age?
All the time. Most recently on Britain’s Got More Talent. Basically, Simon Cowell walked by Jess on the stairs and she was like “HI SIMON” - really loud in his face. She forced him into a handshake with her too. He was polite enough to humour her and awkwardly and say “Hi”. Are there any artists you’d like to collaborate with? Loads. We really, really, really love Drake and Pharrell. We would like to marry both of them. Do you get compared to other girl bands?
You just have to go with it. This is a dream we’ve wanted for a very long time so we make the most of every moment. We have very supportive parents too. What have been the band highlights so far? Performing at the Victoria’s Secret fashion show in NYC was crazy. It happened so fast – our manager called us one Friday and said “pack your bags, you’re flying to NYC tomorrow”. It was our first trip away and we had four hours to get ready for the most glamorous, star-studded fashion event on the global calendar. You blink and you’ve missed it. We never know where we’re going next. Sometimes fans find out before us and tell us on Twitter and we’re like “Really? We’re going where?” Touring with Jessie J must have been a memorable moment for you too? Absolutely. We’re a big fan of hers – we’d
- 15 -
Sometimes. We love it when we get compared to Spice Girls, they ruled! What has been your best gig? They’re all milestones. We always feel like the best is yet to come. We’re really excited to be playing Wireless Festival this year. We love being back home in London, nothing beats performing to a home crowd.
Neon Jungle will be visiting HMV stores across the UK to celebrate the release of their debut album ‘Welcome To The Jungle’, out 28/07/14. They will be signing copies of the album and also performing an acoustic set. Catch them on Wednesday 30th July, 5pm at HMV Sheffield High St.

Passenger Jack White Lazaretto
Whispers Released June 10
Words: Jack Greenwell
The rise to prominence for this guitarist/ songwriter called Michael Rosenberg (or Passenger as he is known) is quite amazing for me. His is a name that has sprung up out into the mainstream pop scene in the past year or so following the commercial success of his excellent track called ‘Let Her Go’. Three years ago I remember seeing Passenger as a small solo act as support for a gig on a beach in Newquay, and all of a sudden here he is releasing his fifth studio album to date entitled ‘Whispers’. It’s the follow up to the very good record ‘All the Little Lights’ released in 2012 (very much worth a listen if you haven’t already). Whispers I expect will follow in its footsteps of containing well written, very catchy folk-rock songs for those who are either well engrossed in this scene already or those who are not. Passenger himself has said it is the most ‘up’ album he has ever written which suggests that this could be a very positive and bubbly record to have especially coming up to the summertime. I am looking forward to hearing this as I do with any Passenger record, but this could be one that proves very special. Give it a listen!
Words: Jack Greenwell
It’s fair to say that Jack White has added a great number of feathers to his bow over the years. His great number of bands, side projects and musical endeavours include such names as The Dead Weather and The Raconteurs and that’s after his greatest and best known group The White Stripes. It has put him up there with some of the most influential musical artists of this generation. Now however, solo work is the name of the game for Jack White. His debut record titled ‘Blunderbuss’ was as blues/rock heavy as you’d expect from him, but offered another kind of side to his song writing which fans hadn’t really seen before; a more personal side perhaps. White’s second record is called ‘Lazaretto’ – released on June 10 through his own Nashville based label ‘Third Man Records’. This album
Peace Money

is expected to be a wide range of styles and musical influences, as Blunderbuss was. I am personally very excited to hear what this record has to offer in comparison to his previous effort. As everyone else has at this point, I have only heard the title track ‘Lazaretto’, but this sounds incredibly promising, ad a perhaps more funk driven track than anything I’ve heard from White before (which is rarely a bad thing!). The styles and individual tracks that I expect to appear on this album will be anthems in their own right I have no doubt. Fans will love it. Newcomers will love it more!

Okay, so it’s not as catchy as Lovesick. It’s not as funky as Wraith. But it’s very, very good. Taken from their unreleased (and so far untitled) follow-up album to In Love, Money is the evolution of Peace as a band in song form. The Foals/Arcade Fire vibe is still there, but their music is more mature. Frontman Harry Koisser’s vocals are confident over the swagger of funky guitar sounds, even allowing a Prince-style falsetto in the bridge. The chorus is huge and festivalready, almost justifying their main stage slot at Reading and Leeds this summer. Koisser’s song-writing has developed, and Money is a song about real-world issues, a social commentary on the negative impact of wealth. “I wrote Money at some point last year whilst trying to write a song about anything but myself,” he said. “It’s not negative, bitter or whingey. I just feel like this year I got a ticket to the circus and I’m trying to decide if I’m a lion or a clown.” With a suave, Ninian Dothdirected video to match, Money is the perfect opening to a highly anticipated album.
Unsurprisingly, Kasabian have become one of the UK’s (hell, even the world’s) biggest alternative rock bands of the past decade. Their fearless approach to experimenting with their sound is admirable really, as few bands really do stretch and test rock music and its fans quite as much as they should. Kasabian’s musical repertoire reaches into electronica, psychadelia, even pop, which could prove to be a spanner in the works in terms of what fans expect to hear next from Kasabian. The title of the new record is ‘48:13’ (presumably its length!) and it is the band’s fifth studio album to date. It is also the second of those to be produced by guitarist Sergio Pizzorno, after ‘Velociraptor!’ which was a dark and twisted venture into the rock and electronica influenced sounds that we know Kasabian so well for making. If you give ‘Eez-Eh’ a listen you’ll totally get it, although be warned it is probably the last thing you’ll expect to hear! Released June 9, this track, and the album, will be a success but a huge grower. Give it a listen, then another, and another!
Gig Review: Woman’s Hour Words: Molly Murray
I walk into the impressive newly refurbished Sheffield cathedral to the sounds of The Half Earth on stage giving a fittingly celestial performance of haunting vocals leaving many of the already numbered audience visibly moved. Next on are Blessa; one of Sheffield’s finest upcoming bands, the fivesome open with infectiously drum-heavy (yet to be named) new track and instantly have the audience’s full attention. From track to track the band keep us under their spell with captivating whirls of spacey riffs gliding in and out of thrashes of euphoric instrumentals, completed by the dreamlike sultry tones of vocalist Olivia. The set included reworks of previously streamed tracks, Unfurl and Open Fields, offering confirmation of the band’s ever-progressing sound. It would seem that with each show Blessa deliver, excitement is sure to follow. Whether delivering previously released or brand new tracks the enthusiasm of the band is clearly reciprocated by their viewers and a sense of only great things to come resides throughout the crowd. Headliners Woman’s Hour finish the evening with an arresting performance seemingly destined for the Cathedral walls. Front woman Fiona Burgess maintains a beautifully minimalistic performance throughout the set allowing each track to enthral and enthuse each spectator itself. This characteristic of striking minimalism is reflected to a further degree in the tracks themselves; subtle beats and sailing riffs are accompanied by beautifully smooth yet restrained vocals inspiring a momentary, almost existential, experience.

McBusted: Back To The Future lands in Sheffield >> The highly-anticipated big-budget ‘Back To The Future’ show landed at Sheffield Motorpoint Arena last month. Quite literally. The boys zoomed onto stage via a flying car and later landed in the centre of the arena via an even more impressive spaceship – much to the surprise of the thousands of screaming fans (not just the girls!). McBusted, for those who don’t know, is a collaboration between two British pop-rock acts – Busted and McFly – who found fame in the early noughties. News of their collaborative reunion tour caused quite a flurry amongst the fans of both bands, and due to demand an additional Sheffield date was added to the tour. Midlands’s pop rockers EofE opened the show. The support band have an accomplished sound – a good mix of foot-tapping happy-rock with an All-American rhythm. The boys immediately establish their presence on stage. Unique for a band of their age, the four-piece write their own material and play their own instruments without a backing track in sight. Commendable. A short five minute Back to the Future-themed video then played on the big screen revving up the energy within the arena until finally McBusted burst onto the stage. ‘Air Hostess’ kicked off the show followed by favourites ‘5 Colours In Her Hair’, ‘All About You’, and ‘Year 3,000’. The screams get louder song after song. Despite McFly boys Danny Jones and Tom Fletcher leading with vocals, former I’m A Celebrity winner Dougie Poynter and Busted’s Matt Willis took most of the limelight – sharing a kiss on stage – but not content with sitting in the background, Busted’s James Bourne performed a solo of ‘Smelly Cat’ while former Strictly Come Dancing champion Harry Judd abandoned his drum kit to strip off and flash his abs to his adoring fans. They sound just as good as they did ten years
ago, and their wardrobe doesn’t look to have changed much either. The show is one of the best arena tours I’ve seen to date. It’s a master class in pop production.
the Rod Stewart musical hits Sheffield Written by multi award-winning writer and comedian Ben Elton, Tonight’s The Night is The Rod Stewart Musical, but it’s not the Rod Stewart story. The sold-out show at the Lyceum Theatre created a mixed response from the audience. The cast sing their hearts out in true West End style to more than 20 Rod Stewart classics – from ‘Da Ya Think I’m Sexy’ to ‘Maggie May’ and
‘Forever Young’ – but nothing like the original. You’ll either love or hate how the storyline is contrived from the Stewart songbook. Tonight’s The Night is set on the mean streets of Detroit and in the glamorous clubs of uptown LA. The show tells the story of Stu, a shy young man so tongue-tied that he cannot find the courage to declare his love to the girl of his dreams. How different he is to his hero, that legendary rock ‘n’ roll vagabond Rod Stewart. One night Stu strikes a deal with the Devil, trading his soul for Rod’s, which seems like a good idea at the time but he finds out the hard way that you can’t find true love using another man’s moves, and that there’s only one Rod Stewart! Stu, played by Ben Heathcoate, performs well and sings with raspy Stewart vocals at every available opportunity. And although he has the limelight, the songs are equally distributed amongst other cast members including former Sugababe, Jade Ewan, who plays Dee Dee, and sings a stand-out soulful rendition of ‘First Cut Is The Deepest’; and Jenna Lee-James, who plays Stu’s love interest Mary, and fills the theatre with her powerful vocals. Overall, the staging and choreography were both impressive and although the storyline may have been unexpected, most Rod Stewart fans left happy.

“I’m not much of a biscuit person”
George Ezra on the things that really matter in life. Words : I na F ischer
T
he last 12 months have been a whirlwind for 21year old George Ezra, who shot to fame when his singles Did You Hear the Rain and Cassy-O took the charts by storm. Since then, he has amassed a loyal following not only in the UK but throughout Europe. Industry professionals have already predicted 2014 as ‘the year’ for George Ezra, who recently finished 5th place in the BBC’s ‘Sound of 2014’ poll and featured in hit lists such as MTV’s ‘Brand New for 2014’ and ‘iTunes new artists of 2014’. With the release of his album ‘Wanted on Voyage’ scheduled for this summer, many people are expecting big things of George Ezra.
So what’s his new dream destination? “I’d love to go to Australia. I’ve been there before, but music-wise I’d love to go and play there. And I’ve never been to New Zealand, so I’d like to check that out. I guess one day I’ll end up in America, maybe,” he reveals. America seems an obvious choice for the 21-year old singersongwriter, who is known for his musical pot-pourri of bluesy pop sounds and his exceptional voice. But he admits that the four years he spent living in Bristol have also influenced his musical development: “Not so much the music scene there though, but just the fact that I had moved out from home for the first time. It was great; I met a lot of people in Bristol and had a lot of fun.”
Such a large amount of media attention could put any artist under a lot of pressure, but not George, who sees the hype in an entirely positive light: “Some people see it as pressure, but to me, getting mentioned in the Sound of 2014 is an honour. You just have to see it as a bonus, the publicity is brilliant. I was always going to record music because that’s what I love to do; the fact that people are enjoying it is a nice little extra.”
With his upcoming headline tour leading him from England to Belgium, Paris, Germany, Switzerland and beyond, George Ezra surely won’t be spending too much time in Bristol in the near future. It’s a good thing then, that he is a big fan of touring: according to George, its the main reason he wanted to be a musician in the first place. “That’s why I do all of this, to play live music,” he explains. The only downside? “Constantly being surrounded by people. I like having time to myself every once in a while, and you don’t get much of that on tour.”
With the support of his new band, George is set to embark on his European tour and play at several summer festivals. Apart from the new instrumental back-up, however, George insists that his live shows haven’t changed much since he went from playing intimate gigs in bars to sold-out headline shows all over Europe. “Whenever I play live, there’s still an element of playing for people who are hearing me for the first time. So you still have to make the effort of introducing yourself in the same manner,” he says humbly.
George was recently flown out to China by Burberry, to perform “Did you hear the rain?” at the extravagant opening ceremony of their new flagship store in Shanghai. Accompanied only by his guitar, his powerful voice echoed across the catwalk which later saw Cara Delevigne and other supermodels showcase the best of British haute couture. Certainly one of his more unusual performances, which George describes as a “breathtaking” experience.
At the time we speak, George Ezra is just about to embark on the #EzraExpress – a train journey leading him from Bristol to Budapest, via stops in London, Brussels, Paris and Munich. Fans were able to win tickets online and join him for the ride – something which George seemed a bit uneasy about prior to departure: “I’m still not sure how sensible an idea it is.. is it safe? But I’m sure it’ll be fun... there can’t be that many crazy people in the world. It’ll be nice not only for me to meet the people that have won, but also for them to meet each other. By the time we finish we’ll be a big old family.”
He may represent the British music scene abroad, but what is very un-British about George is his ambivalent position on tea. Another journalist recently wrote about the singer-songwriter that his only backstage demand is to have a kettle in the dressing room – but when I ask him about his favourite type of tea, George unexpectedly erupts in thundering laughter, which makes me feel a bit foolish for asking. “You know what? I don’t even drink that much tea! But I do quite like chamomile or peppermint tea,” he manages to respond once he has caught his breath. What about biscuits? “I’m not much of a biscuit person, but if I was gonna eat one, I’d go for one of the ones with the cows on them,” he responds. No more tea and biscuits for George then, it seems.
The Ezra Express couldn’t have been a better promotion for his upcoming album, which George wrote largely whilst inter-railing through Europe by himself. The song “Budapest” laments how he didn’t make it to the Hungarian capital on his first inter-railing adventure, something which he can now happily tick off his bucket list.
- 20 -
In another interview, Bristol’s BBC Introducing presenter Richard Pitt once described George as a “young man with the voice of a 50-year old”. George admits that he made a conscious decision to sing in his unique style, and adds jokingly: “At least it’s not the other way around... at least I don’t look like a 50-year old and sound like a little boy. I’ve got it lucky!” A lot of George’s musical idols, such as American folk musician Woody Guthrie, produced children’s songs next to their commercial material. Is that something the singer-songwriter could see himself doing in the future? “I quite liked the idea of it, writing songs with a more Disney approach, so that they’re accessible for all ages. Whether or not I will actually do that I don’t know. I’m quite childish when I want to be, so I think I could definitely pull it off by getting in touch with that side of me,” he admits. We speak briefly about Jack Johnson’s Curious George soundtrack which is filled with children’s songs, and George remarks: “What a dude! He has had kids though, so he probably finds it easier writing for that age group.” He laughs, and adds: “I’m not in the market to have kids anytime soon.” Good to know, if that means he can spend more time touring and making music. And since George Ezra isn’t fazed by the hype, we’re comfortable to admit: we can’t wait to see what the next few years hold in store for this talented 21-year old.

Self-taught Sheffield filmmaker Theo Cane Garvey is currently writing, directing, filming, editing, and even starring in a post-apocalyptic sci-fi feature film, based in abandoned areas across Sheffield and the UK.
‘The Sheffspendables’
Set in 2035, the majority of the British population have been evacuated due to an uncontrollable rise in crime and civil conflict. What little of society is left has since rapidly crumbled into an apocalyptic wasteland, where tribes of survivors compete for a stolen government bounty - a top secret bio-weapon known only as ‘unit eleven’. Theo, 26, says: “Although the film has taken us around three years so far, the concept has been around for more like five or six years. I have dedicated my entire life to it. It’s all or nothing for me and I won’t stop until we have a finished product we can all be proud of.

Chic meets ‘Ex On The Beach’ star
Marco Alexandre Is there more to Sheffield’s Marco Alexandre than just a high quiff and an oiled torso? The 22 year old claims he was already a celebrity in his hometown before he was cast for MTV’s latest reality show, Ex On The Beach, describing himself as a “full-time poser” and “Greek God”. But it seems, his ‘celebrity status’ has expanded beyond the Steel City, as more than half a million people tuned in to watch the show’s debut on MTV. Marco was one of eight single guys and girls to jet off to a paradise island for a dream holiday of sun, sea, sex and good times… but as things got off to a sizzling start, MTV unexpectedly brought in their exes to break up the party – one by one. Why did you sign up for the show? I got a tweet from the company producers asking me if I wanted to apply. I’d split up with my girlfriend five days
before so I thought why not – free holiday! I messaged them back on Twitter and within 30 minutes they’d invited me down to London for an interview and I was there the same day. Had you done TV work before? No, this was my first TV appearance so I was really lucky to get on the show. Some of my friends applied too – it would have been so good to have them there – but they didn’t get through. They were gutted. You seemed genuinely shocked when your ex, Frankie, turned up. Did you have no idea? Not a clue! I signed up for a show called Summer of Love which should have involved eight single people going on dates on a holiday of a lifetime. Turned out, the show was really called Ex on the Beach. It was an emotional rollercoaster. If you’ve watched the show, you’ll see she’s like a firework. So, could you not tell anyone you were going on the show? My Mum, Dad and only one of my friends knew. He took me to the airport and appeared on the TV at the start of the show but he had to keep it quiet from everyone else. We filmed in September 2013 so it was so hard keeping quiet until the show aired last month. Did you have to quit your job? Yeah, I was out filming for three or four weeks, so I had to leave my job as a translator for a company in Sheffield. I’m from Portugal originally, before I moved to Sheffield age six, so I speak fluent Spanish and Portuguese.
- 24 -
What has the response been so far? Crazy! I went from 400 followers to 30k followers in the first two weeks the show was aired. Everyone has been really positive towards me, but not so much towards my ex Frankie. I’ve had loads of tweets saying she’s a psycho and I could do better. All of my friends have been watching the show – most of them work in the nightclub scene and regularly work with similar reality TV stars so they get it. Have you watched any of the episodes? It must be hard not to. It’s cringy but yes I’ve watched them all. I hate the way my voice sounds on TV – I had no idea I sounded like that. All of the cast from Ex on the Beach watched the first episode together but I’ve been watching it with my mates and family too. We’re filmed 24/7 so it’s annoying how so many scenes get cut for the one hour show. What’s next for you? Any more shows? I’d love to do TV presenting like Marc Wright and Rylan have since their reality TV fame. I really want to go on Big Brother too but I don’t know about I’m a Celebrity… Get me out of here – I hate spiders and imagine me not being able to do my hair every day? I couldn’t cope. I’d probably make great TV but it would be a nightmare. So without revealing too much, Is there a future for you and Frankie? I can’t really say but we constantly argue so we struggle to make a relationship work but it would be nice for us to have a fairy-tale ending, wouldn’t it?! @Marco_Alexandre Words : J essica F ogarty

Pastels SS14 Pastel Trend by Bethanie Lunn, Meadowhall’s Fashion and Beauty Adviser… Pastels are in vogue every summer but this time around they have more edge to them – available in statement jewellery, combined with bold patterns and in structured pieces such as boxy tote bags and skinny-cut jeans. Pastel hues this season are almost good enough to eat with delicate strawberry pink, mellow banana yellow, soft blueberry blue and mouth-watering mint green all being front runners. They look best teamed with white, with this season’s florals or worn head-to-toe since
they’re delicate enough to do so. Wear white cigarette pants with these polka dot and pastel court shoes (a total bargain), a floral tee and a flower crown. Or team the pink skinny jeans with a basic white swing camisole and the statement necklace. If you prefer a more classic monochrome combination, introduce pastels with accessories like this stunning Accessorize tote bag. Pastels look fabulous with sunkissed skin so enjoy a splash of colour this summer.

Tarr and Fether #MadeInSheffield Chic meets celebrity stylist turned jewellery designer, Natasha Lyons…
After spending the past ten years working with some of the biggest names in showbiz, Sheffield stylist Natasha (28) is now taking a new route in the fashion industry, following the launch of her handmade jewellery brand, Tarr and Fether. The brand launched online in 2012 – a unique collection inspired by the clean, sleek designs of Swedish street style, but made right here in the steel city. “I was blown away by the immediate success” says Natasha. “No sooner had I launched the website, I was receiving requests from customers eager to invest in the range.” Due to this demand, the brand has continued to develop, with the introduction of menswear pieces, seasonal lines and most recently a charity collection of chains – all proceeds going to The Children’s Hospital Charity.
“I’ve listened to my customers and developed the brand accordingly” Natasha adds. “My Valentine’s personalised coin chain necklaces were so successful I’ve made them a permanent line. “My most recent collection is more high fashion featuring festival head chains and I’ll soon be launching leather pieces, clutch bags and iPad cases.” In February, Tarr and Fether moved into a Yorkshire Artspace studio in the Exchange Building, Sheffield. “It’s such an inspiring and creative space” says Natasha. “I love the city and even though I’m trading nationally online, I was keen for the brand to remain Made In Sheffield.” Shop the menswear collection in Broomhill’s Inherited Shop and the full collections online at www.tarrandfether.co.uk. @tarrandfether
The singer, who is married to superbike champion and fellow patron of the charity James Toseland, will sell through the site – donating the profit to the Make it Better appeal which aims to raise £20 million over the coming years to transform The Children’s Hospital into a more modern and family friendly environment. Katie said: “‘I’ve visited the Sheffield Children’s Hospital a number of times with James when he does the Easter egg run. “This year they had over 1,000 bikers coming together – and it’s an amazing sight – all volunteering for the cause. “The care that the doctors, nurses and staff provide is already incredible but it is also important that the environment is also first class so I’m really proud to support the Make It Better Appeal.” The stunning clothes and shoes – which include items from acclaimed designers such as Vivienne Westwood and Nina Ricci – are now available for bidding.

Ferne McCann launches
#FML
Lasula collection Sheffield shoppers were lucky enough to meet and greet TOWIE’s Ferne McCann when she brought her new Lasula fashion collection to Meadowhall Shopping Centre for a Northern exclusive. The reality TV star who found fame on The Only Way Is Essex, has collaborated with UK fashion boutique Lasula, for a second time following the success of her autumn/winter collection last year. Chic meets the Essex beauty to find out more about her Spring/Summer range branded #FML – Ferne McCann for Lasula…
Words : J essica F ogarty
Where do you shop? Topshop mostly – I couldn’t live without it. I also love Zara, Miss Selfridge and a little bit of Primark. I get there really early in the morning though as I hate the crowds. It’s such a busy shop.
Current and former TOWIE cast members – including Amy Childs, Lydia Bright and Jessica Wright – have also launched their own fashion lines. Do you see them as competitors? No. We’re all completely different.
What is your favourite fashion piece in your wardrobe?
Do you think your fashion collection represents stereotypical ‘Essex style’?
I have a new that I wear I love it.
I don’t think I’ve ever represented that. If you want to look ‘Essex style’, then go shop Amy Childs’ fashion collection. I’m always a little bit more different and relaxed with what I wear. I wear my cap back to front and I’m cool and layed back. Granted I’m an Essex girl, I just don’t represent stereotypical Essex fashion.
Miu Miu bag all the time.
Why did you choose to collaborate with Lasula?
What has the response been to the new #FML collection?
They sent me some samples of their stock a while ago and I loved them. They are slightly different from most other high fashion brands – I like their prints and the way they are made. We formed a good relationship when I launched my first AW13 collection so we decided to team up again for SS14.
Really good – My Twitter followers love it and the boutique owners are thrilled with the success. Will you be launching a follow-on AW14 collection?
Does the collection represent your style?
I hope so. Fashion is a big interest of mine. I’m also funding a separate project at the moment though which is completely separate to this. A fashion blog – but no clothes will be for sale. It’s so time consuming, it’s completely taking over my life but something exciting to look out for.
Certain pieces, yes; although I’ve tried to make it appeal to everyone. The floral playsuits are definitely me, but it was really important to not just pick what I like – I needed to think about what was going to sell to my audience and ensure they were at affordable High Street prices.

By intelligent design or evolution, man was meant to run for one thing and one thing only: to stay alive. Pamplona was the first real race organized for what running should be: running from stuff that’s going to kill, gore, or maim you.
Napoleons Owlerton 24 hour cyclathon This summer, the Tour de France, one of the world’s greatest sporting events, is coming to the UK for three incredible days. From 5 – 7 July, the Tour de France Grand Départ – the first three stages of the Tour – will take riders through the stunning scenery of Yorkshire and onto London. Marie Curie is the official charity partner of this year’s Grand Départ and to get into the spirit of the tour Napoleons Owlerton are hosting a 24 hour cyclathon. From 1pm on Friday, July 4, right through to 1pm on Saturday, July 5, two stationary bikes will be running non-stop for 24 hours! The bikes are kindly supplied by FitSpace Sheffield
Luckily, we’ve evolved to where we only hunt for attractive potential mates, we only gather for extreme couponing, and we only run to benefit charities and our cardiovascular system. So quit lollygagging and join the race that’s been ruining all other 5Ks since 2012 at Color Me Rad Sheffield.

Tour de France:
All Yellow! You may have noticed a few yellow bicycles dotted around Sheffield City Centre in the past couple of weeks, or wondered why the label on your Henderson’s relish has turned yellow. No, Coldplay are not making everything yellow. There is a rather special sporting event about to colourfully burst through the roads of Sheffield…
1. Midhopestones The Ye Olde Mustard Pot pub Times are approximate, but the Tour Caravan which is made up of 250 sponsors and distributes freebies, will enter Midhopestones at 1:50pm with the cyclists due to follow between
3:24pm and 3:50pm. The Ye Olde Mustard Pot Pub is the best place to see the cyclists enter Sheffield as the racers will literally pass their doors. They will be having an all-day celebration, starting at 7am with breakfast and finishing with a live Beatles tribute band in the evening. Limited camping is available if you want to avoid the road closures.
The Background The Tour de France cycle race was established in 1903 and is the largest annual sporting event in the world. It takes place over three weeks and a distance of 3500km (2200 miles), with 22 teams of nine riders, competing for the winner’s yellow jersey. Twelve million spectators are expected to line the route to support the cyclists, with an average of 470,000 people watching at each stage. There are three stages to the route; Stage 1 will be Leeds to Harrogate, Stage 2 will be York to Sheffield and Stage 3 will be Cambridge to London. Sheffield is honoured to be part of the Tour de France action, with cyclists due to pass through and finish Stage 2 on Sunday, 6th July. The route will be hitting many suburban and major locations in Sheffield, so wherever you are, you can catch a piece of the race. Here’s a breakdown of what’s going on, where and when you should be there.
5. Wincobank Côte de Jenkin Rd
3. High Bradfield Côte de Bradfield The Tour Caravan comes through here at approximately 2:03pm and the cyclists ride in between 3:36pm and 4:03pm. The entertainment really heats up with the Steel Stage in the heart of High Bradfield with live screenings of the Tour and live music throughout the weekend. There are even two campsites; Simple Camp and Premium Camp within walking distance of the entertainment. As well as free entry to the steel Stage, campers and noncampers can go to Bradfield Brewery for the beer and real ale festival with its range of famous farmer’s ales and delicious wines, ciders and soft drinks. There will also be a mini film festival, cultural workshops and loads more activities to get you in the Tour festival spirit.
Don Valley Bowl
Only a short distance from the finish line, the Tour Caravan will be at the top of the Jenkin Road hill at approximately, 2:37pm and the cyclists pass through between 4:06pm and 4:37pm. This is a particularly challenging moment for the cyclists. As the road bends left, the slope becomes its steepest, with a 33% gradient. There will be fewer cyclists in the lead group and this could become the battle ground for the winner. Stay roadside and take in the sweat and tears of the riders up close, or view the action by the Wincobank Hill Fort, which was thought to be built by the Celtic Brigantes tribe around 500BC.
High Bradfield
4. Oughtibridge Côte de Bradfield The Caravan is predicted to reach Oughtibridge at 2:14pm, whilst the cyclists will pass through between 3:46pm and 4:14pm. Oughtibridge will be hosting one of the official spectator hubs which are situated in many locations throughout Yorkshire. This one can be found in Coronation Park at the foot of the Côte de Oughtibridge (or Jawbone Hill) climb and will be open to over 2,500 people. For some refreshment after your exciting front row experience, head to the Cock Inn pub next to the park or up to road to Julios on Langsett Road for some a tasty Italian dinner.
6. Don Valley Bowl The Finish Line The Tour Caravan ends its journey around 2:46pm and the riders are expected to finish sometime between 4:14pm and 4:46pm. There is another official spectator hub positioned near the finish of Stage 2. This will be the largest hub, capable of holding 40,000 people. This will be a green space with big screens, the Ice Sheffield ice rink and a café to relax in to celebrate the cyclists whizzing over the finish line. - 35- 35 - -
chic interiors
Summer style at Nest Sheffield Nest launched in Sheffield in 2002 – a new concept interiors store and website selling only authentic licenced originals – no fakes! Over the past 12 years, its popularity has continued to grow and the nest.co.uk website now has more than 15,000 product options. What makes Nest so special? The company brings its customers the very best interiors available from worldwide furniture and lighting manufacturers. It all started in 2001 when Christian Hawley, the founder, was taking a year out to travel the world. This inspired him to set up one of the UK’s best interior stores. It was in Australia he found such inspiration and on his return to England he decided to visit some of the world’s best furniture fairs – from Milan to Paris – to source innovative furniture and lighting products. Back in the early 2000s very little design was sold online in fact ‘design’ wasn’t really a word that had hit the mainstream quite like it has now. So founder and managing director Christian Hawley bet on a winner. “We truly believe we are the world’s best modern interiors store” he tells us. “We work hard to source the latest up-andcoming designers and brands, and we’re always on the lookout for new items we think our valued customers will like. “We believe it is this dedication to new design that sets us apart from our competitors.”
Nest’s main company focus is quality. “We really just do not compromise on this” adds Christian. “If we are to stock and support a product, we really have to believe in the product, and quality is the over-riding factor in this. Nothing short of perfection makes it to the Nest. co.uk shop.” Nest, 9 Parkway Rise, Sheffield S9 4WQ. www.nest.co.uk

Outdoor Entertaining Sheffield garden designer and founder of Inspired Garden Design Ltd, Lee Bestall, shares his expert picks for outdoor living – furniture and accessories…
Add charm and character with the Gardenalia range from Dawsons Yard, located at Heeley Bank Antiques. Summer is coming and there’s no place I’d rather be than in a garden. Whether I’m surrounded by the sweet smelling jasmine on a formally planted Italian hillside; by the heady scent of Lavender in southern France, or the gentle aroma of the old English rose; if the sun is shining, and I’m sat in a space filled with plants, I’m on holiday.

Step back in time and create a beautiful corner of the garden for a quintessentially English afternoon tea with accessories from Sheffield Antiques Quarter. Try planting up a few Sempervivums in an old tea cup or plastic wine glass for an elegant table decoration. www.sheffieldantiquesquarter.co.uk
As gardens become smaller and smaller, it’s never been so important to make use of every square inch of the garden and what better way to do that than by creating an outdoor room. Maybe you want a lounge, with two outdoor sofas or maybe somewhere under cover in which to dine and entertain friends. Personalise and accessorise with objects from around the home to give the inside outside feel. Why not create an intimate dining experience with an overhead pergola decorated with a scented Rose such as ‘New Dawn’ with its sweet fruity fragrance.

Inox Dine
Y
ou don’t often associate the words ‘fine dining’ and ‘students’; but that’s exactly the concept at Sheffield’s new contemporary British restaurant, Inox Dine.
The food bill totalled £56.40 – Not exactly a budget friendly venue for students but prices are on par with other fining dining venues in the city.
Located on level five of the Sheffield University Student’s Union Building, Inox Dine isn’t your average student canteen – it’s a relaxed, stylish venue offering classic British dishes to reflect the seasons. And it’s open to the public.
We conclude that Inox Dine is a welcome addition to the Student’s Union building; certainly worth a visit if you’re looking to dine somewhere different.
In fact, we didn’t see a single student on our Friday visit. Most of the tables were sat empty with just a few business professionals enjoying a working lunch. It’s a real shame to see such a unique restaurant go unused, but I imagine evenings and weekends are when the restaurant comes to life. Joe Berry is head chef at Inox Dine – his passion is clear as he talks us through his evening menu, one that he’s clearly proud of. He recommends his favourite dishes and we follow his advice. We begin with ‘Bread and Batter’ (£1.95) to share as an appetiser. This platter consists of a sweet dark rye and black treacle roll, a light crisp white polish roll and a mini Yorkshire pudding with Henderson’s and onion. Very Sheffield. The rolls, still warm, have that fresh just-out-of-the-oven smell. Delightful. Next up, our starters arrive – chargrilled monkfish cheeks (£5.75) and truffled duck eggs (£5.75). Elegantly presented on plate, the dishes look too good to eat. The monkfish is served with broad beans and chorizo while the truffled duck egg is accompanied with cep brioche soldiers, asparagus, proscuito and sprouting broccoli. Full of flavour, but a little overseasoned for our taste. For main course, we try the lamb – served pink – (£16.50) and oven roasted fillet of cod (£15.50). The lamb is cooked to perfection and has been well rested, but it’s the crispy confit potatoes which really wow us on the cod dish. Divine. They come served with a crab cake, samphire and bisque. The bisque (a smooth, creamy highly seasoned French soup) sits well with the dish but lays a little heavy on the stomach. We ask the waiter to recommend a wine to wash it down and he’s knowledgeable enough to list us a few suggestions of whites and reds which complement our dishes. The ‘curds and whey’ dessert (£5.45) – a combination of Yorkshire goats’ curd and whey, Sheffield honey, roast figs and sweet roasted walnuts – is definitely an acquired taste. If like us, you find the strong savoury flavour of cheese too overwhelming in a dessert, you may prefer the chocolate dome (£5.50). This rich, intense dish will satisfy any chocoholic’s taste buds.
Meet the chef Chic meets Joe Berry, head chef at Inox Dine. How would you describe the menu at Inox Dine? In a nutshell - classically inspired, seasonal, British and contemporary. We have a very talented kitchen team with plenty of surprises up our sleeves!! What is your personal favourite dish? I am very proud of everything that we produce so it is difficult to pin point one thing. I am very pleased with our gluten free afternoon tea option. I would choose it over the classic. What did you do previously, before Inox Dine? I was sous Chef to Darren Goodwin at Losehill House in the Peak District, and prior to that ran my own business with my wife in France. What attracted you to Inox Dine? It was a one in a million opportunity that I couldn’t say no to! What is your favourite ingredient to cook with? I love the fact that there is so much local produce available in Sheffield, so anything produced in the area.
What is your favourite kitchen utensil? I would be lost without a guzzunda, whisk and a knife. Do you cater for special dietary requirements at Inox Dine? Always, we never want to send anyone home hungry. What’s next for the restaurant? I am always looking for new ideas and how to develop our offering. We like to put something new on the menu as often as possible. For example, to coincide with the Tour de France, we will have a special authentic French inspired menu and Champagne tasting. I am also very much looking forward to the Skills for Chefs conference when we will be hosting the final gala dinner. No pressure. Why should people visit you? From breakfasts, business lunches, something slightly more sedate in the evening, one of our many events, our afternoon teas or Sunday lunches accompanied by live jazz musicians at our Sunday Sessions. We have something for everyone. Inox Dine, Level 5 Student’s Union Building, Durham Road, Sheffield, S10 2TG. 0114 222 6043

Afternoon tea at Jameson’s Cafe Sheffield Continental Market From German sausage to Dutch pancakes and crocodile sandwiches – we got a taste of some of the world’s finest foods at the annual Sheffield Continental Market.
V
intage China pottery, crystal chandeliers and every flavour of cake you could think of meets my eyes at the door. I love it already. Jameson’s Café and Tea Rooms opened its doors on Abbeydale Road just a few months ago. Its corner plot, painted in classic green with traditional stained glass windows, stands out a mile on this bustling street. And the interior only impresses further. “We only use bone China cups and saucers here” says Kate the waitress, who’s quick to bring over our pot of tea for two, milk, an extra pot of hot water and strainer. “Real tea too” she smiles, as she lifts the lid on the teapot revealing the circling loose tea leaves.
is perfect for the cake lover who can’t decide between the delicious flavours on offer.
More than 50 exhibitors set up stalls on Fargate, Town Hall Square and in The Peace Gardens, for the four day festival in May and we couldn’t resist testing out some of their speciality dishes…
You must pop to the adjoining ground floor antiques room before you head home too. From vintage jewellery stands to shabby chic furniture and antique accessories – you’ll be guaranteed to grab a bargain.
Hot pancakes served with Nutella and cream were a clear winner at the Dutch Pancakes stall. This dish is a tradition in Holland, usually eaten as dessert or as an occasional afternoon treat.
Jameson’s Tea Rooms, 334 Abbeydale Road, Sheffield S7 1FN.
An authentic Greek souvlaki (meat and vegetables on a skewer) served in a pitta bread was the speciality dish at Greek Grill House. The company claim their popularity is due to their secret tzatziki recipe (a cool creamy sauce).
0114 255 1159
Kangaroo served in a fresh ciabatta and topped with caramelised onions was a big hit with Meats of the World. Other favourites were ostrich, wild boar and a crocodile sandwich topped with ‘real cheese’.
Our Afternoon Tea for Two arrives soon after. The three-tier-stand couldn’t look prettier, towering high above the vintage floral tablecloth. The base – our pick of ham and cheese perfectly shaped finger sandwiches; tier one – two banana and sultana scones with a generous pot of jam and clotted cream; and the final top tier – two large slices of homemade sponge cake – one white chocolate and raspberry and the second, my choice of carrot and orange cake.
The Continental Cottage were serving up traditional gluten-free German produce. A favourite with the Sheffield foodies was the homemade salami sausage – smoked and ready to eat. The dish of the day had to be Chicken Karahi (also known as Gosht Karahi) from Maharaja Indian Cuisine. This popular medium-hot dish was served with a special Maharaja sauce to create the perfect Karahi taste and accompanied with boiled rice.
For £9.95 per person, the Traditional Afternoon Tea is without a doubt value for money, given the quality of food, elegant presentation and service. There’s also an upgrade available to Splendid Afternoon Tea – a more superior offering with a selection of more upmarket sandwiches, a tart and ‘posh pop’ for £12.95.
Mango Sauce was a bestseller at The Wiltshire Chilli Farm stall. The sauce is the perfect accompaniment with fish, chicken and curry.
You almost feel like you’ve stepped back in time on your visit. Even the staff look the part with their vintage frilly aprons, red lips and pearl studs. It’s no surprise that by the time got up to leave, all but two tables were full.
Words : J essica F ogarty
I couldn’t help but notice the couple on the facing table tucking into a ‘Cake Tapas’ – a selection of six (smaller, but by no means little) slices of cake. Not for the faint hearted, this dish

Leeds One of the UK’s hippest destinations, Leeds has firmly established itself as a cosmopolitan city; a haven for shoppers, lovers of culture, party animals and food buffs, whilst at the same time providing the perfect getaway to the Yorkshire countryside.

EAT It’s a city of gastronomic stalwarts, with many of the same names being recognised year-after-year for their fine fodder. Names such as Sous le Nez, Hansa’s, Brasserie Forty 4 and the 4th Floor in Harvey Nichols would all feature on this list. However, it’s well worth looking a little harder for some of the city’s shiny new gems and surprising suppers. LUNCH @ Mrs Atha’s Tea Shop Take a break from your shopping and pay this new independent tea shop a visit. Hidden behind House of Fraser on Briggate, Mrs Atha’s Tea Shop offers a perfect hub for reading a book, doing some work or gossiping with friends. The café’s style is reminiscent of an Edwardian gentleman’s club with its cool vintage décor and eclectic mix of furniture. The exposed brickwork, wooden floors and low-hanging lights add to the originality of the café and provide a relaxing atmosphere.
DINNER @ Kendell’s Bistro Unashamedly French and unmistakably Yorkshire, Kendell’s Bistro is relaxed, eccentric and informal. No waiters topping up wine glasses after every sip, or sneaking up behind you with a six foot peppermill. There are cloth napkins, but not starched, blackboard menus, an open plan kitchen, and intimate cosy candles flickering friendly. It’s also won Best Chef for Chef Patron Steve Kendell, Best Fine Dining and Best Overall Restaurant in the 2012 Oliver Awards. FOOD AND GAMES @ Friends of Ham The only craft beer bar and charcuterie in the UK – they source air dried ham, charcuterie and cheese locally where possible, but aren’t afraid to ship in cheeses and meats such as authentic Iberico Ham from further afield if they really can’t be matched. To while away the hours, head downstairs for a go on the shuffleboard.

Cafeology celebrates ten years with new coffee pod Cafeology’s presence in the city has grown rapidly since it was founded by Bryan Unkles in 2003. Numerous independent cafes and restaurants serve the company’s drinks, as well as Sheffield Theatres, Sheffield College and many outlets within the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals.
>> To celebrate their tenth anniversary, ethical coffee company, Cafeology, has opened its first coffee pod in Decathlon Sheffield – selling its wares to the public for the first time. Providing free WiFi and open daily from 8am-7pm Monday to Saturday and 9:30am-5pm Sundays, the pod serves coffee in three sizes – small, regular and large – with prices from £1.60 to £2.30; alongside tea, hot chocolate and cold frappes from the company’s Teaology, Cocoaology and Frappeology ranges.
Francisco Herrera – president of the Coffee Growers’ Association and Cafeology’s Colombian grower, was guest of honor at the coffee pod launch event. Francisco said: “My role is essentially to taste the coffee and if it doesn’t taste good enough, I’ll send a specialist to visit the farm to investigate. “We focus all of our efforts on improving the life of our farmers – making sure they have the right training and equipment.”
When asked about his favourite coffee, Francisco replied: “Cafeology coffee of course – an expresso in the morning, no milk, no sugar is the best way to start the day.” So what’s next for Cafeology? Founder, Bryan Unkles says: “We’re keen to expand and will look at other stores across the country. “We’ve also got a new retail product launching that is the first ever Fairtrade RSPB approved coffee, which is very exciting for us.
A choice of sandwiches, panini’s and salads are available from UrbanEat, as well as snacks and fresh fruit, and all milk used in the outlet is delivered fresh daily from Dungworth-based Our Cow Molly.
“We want to keep pursuing these opportunities and grow the brand while sticking to our principles, as we have done for the last decade.”

Charity weekend attracts hundreds to Sandbeck Park
Miss South Yorkshire on the SAFE@LAST catwalk
South Yorkshire based children’s charity SAFE@ LAST hosted a weekend of fundraising fun at the stately home of Lord and Lady Scarbrough on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th May. The back to back events, which started with a clay pigeon shoot on Saturday and finished with a glamorous ‘posh picnic’ and fashion show on Sunday, raised funds to support SAFE@LAST’s vital services for young runaways across South Yorkshire. Despite the drizzling rain and wind, guests enjoyed two luxurious days of entertainment, refreshments and delicious lunches, with a hearty hog roast at the clay shoot and a delightful afternoon picnic on Sunday. Shooters and guests at the clay shoot had the chance to engage in archery, sporting air rifles and the ever popular and competitive welly wanging amongst the clay pigeon shooting, and the prestigious Team Trophy was won by new team ‘Neville’s Guns / Pulse’ and runners up were ‘Team Morrell’ from Maltby. On Sunday, picnic goers got their glad rags on for a glamorous fashion show featuring items from the best of South Yorkshire’s fashion designers; Kelly Clark England, Yes Orange, Anabaptise and SAFE@LAST’s Charity Chicks Boutique. Items paraded in the fashion show, among many others, were available for guests to purchase in the marquee. Models included current Miss South Yorkshire title holder Michelle Paraskeva; former title holder Olivia Cunliffe; Miss Scuba International Jamie-Lee Faulkner; Miss South Yorkshire International Laura Gregory and Miss Great Britain Ashley Powell. A unique picnic hamper, including sandwiches, wine and cheese was served in individual gift bags followed by three tiers of mini cakes and pots of tea.

The events attracted over 300 people to Sandbeck Park, and have raised valuable funds to enable SAFE@LAST to continue delivering services to vulnerable children and young people across South Yorkshire. Hilary Massarella, SAFE@LAST Founder Trustee, organised the Posh Picnic alongside The Miss South Yorkshire 2014 founder Jill Faulkner as part of fundraising for their Sahara trek this November in aid of SAFE@LAST. Hilary said: “We’re so thankful that Lord and Lady Scarbrough, two of our amazing patrons, agreed to kindly host a weekend of fundraising events at their beautiful home, and to everybody who attended or supported the event in some way. “It has been a highly enjoyable two days and the weather hasn’t made any difference to the running of the events or to our guests’ enthusiasm and satisfaction.” Lord Scarbrough said: “My wife and I are thrilled to have held such a beautiful weekend of events at our home, in aid of SAFE@LAST. It has been thoroughly enjoyable and it has been wonderful to meet some new faces and reunite with old friends. “We are proud to support this superb charity that provides such a vital lifeline to so many vulnerable young people in the region.”

A fashion-first:
The Polaroid Dress
news
Sheffield shoppers have created the UK’s first Polaroid Dress – a ground-breaking gown made from photographs mounted on wire mesh. Move over Lady Gaga in your meat dress! This fashion-first was created in Meadowhall Shopping Centre, when local artists, Charlotte Armitage and Wayne Sables, snapped female shoppers at the annual Ladies Night event. Hundreds of women stopped to have their photographs taken to piece together the design, which came to life on the night. Designer, Charlotte, said: “The Polaroid Dress is an original piece, the first of its kind in the UK. “It is an instantaneous and physical representation of the pleasure of purchase – it was a huge success on the evening with many shoppers taking a huge interest in the dress during its development.”

“I’d like to think I’m good enough to win the X Factor. I’m feeling confident. I’m performing Tempted by Squeeze.” - Michael Carletti (36), Care support worker, Sheffield

Meadowhall Events Manager Alex Caley said: “We are delighted that hundreds of hopefuls turned out in force for first ever X Factor auditions at Meadowhall. “Sheffield has a great music scene with some extremely talented acts and it was great to see so many leave with that all-important golden ticket to the next stage where they will meet the judges hopefully we’ll even see some of them go on to the live shows.” Chic headed down to Meadowhall to speak to some of the hopeful musicians ahead of their auditions… Remember, you saw them here first!

Isuzu D-Max
By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist Follow Tim on Twitter: @carwriteups www.carwriteups.co.uk
>> If you’re after a bullet-proof workhorse with a bit of bling then the Isuzu D-Max could be your answer. The 4x4 pick-up is available with a car-like four-up cab, meaning you can actually use the vehicle as a tool as well as a family motor.
The expert judging panel concluded that the D-Max is unmatched in meeting the needs of the professional user. Matthew Eisenegger, Editor at Trade Van Driver, commented: “Its solid, no-nonsense approach, we feel, just can’t be beaten for those who need a real tough workhorse.”
I had the Utah Double Cab Vision automatic - the flagship model with more than respectable standard equipment. This includes air conditioning, daytime running lights, electric windows, a sat-nav and front, side and curtain airbags.
The mighty motor has a ‘shift-on-the-fly’ system, allowing you to adjust between two and four-wheel drive modes while travelling at speeds of up to 60 mph. That’s impressive, not to mention convenient, but its ace card is its load-lugging talent.
The diesel-powered D-Max is propelled by a somewhat agricultural sounding 2.5-litre twin-turbo lump, and comes with a five-speed automatic transmission. I suspect changing gears manually would be akin to stirring cement, so the auto box is a necessity in my opinion.
The towing capacity of the D-Max has been increased by 500 kg – adding to its already colossal three tonne pulling power. The enhancement, which only came into effect in July 2013, has come as a response to customer feedback and to please those who were demanding extra capacity. So now, all 4x4 models of the Isuzu D-Max will be able to haul a maximum braked load of 3.5 tonnes – that’s enough strength to pull a house out of the ground. Well, almost.
You sit up high behind the steering wheel, so visibility is good, and the seats are comfortable. The vehicle is bouncy over rough surfaces, and it can run wide out of corners, but the Isuzu never causes you to lack confidence in its road-holding abilities. The steering and brakes are excellent; nevertheless you are always aware of the size of the D-Max. It’s long, so parallel parking can be an issue in town. But, let’s face it, this isn’t exactly a city car - the Isuzu’s main talent is to help tough guys carry out tough jobs in more open environments. Yes, it’ll double up as people transport when it’s off-duty, but tackling muck, grass, sand, snow and everything in between is what the D-Max is best at. Indeed, the highly-acclaimed Isuzu D-Max has collected many awards for its abilities. The latest accolade came from Trade Van Driver magazine, where it was crowned ‘Best 4x4 Trade Pick-Up’ at the publication’s third annual awards. This is the second accolade that the pick-up has collected in as many months, following the VansA2Z.com ‘Pick-Up of the Year’ title that the D-Max collected for a second consecutive year.
Isuzu hasn’t just concentrated on brute force and practicality though. The D-Max has been awarded a four-star safety rating by independent vehicle assessment organisation, Euro NCAP. The results of the recently-introduced, tougher test, mark the pick-up as one of the safest motors in its segment. The D-Max is proving to be tremendously popular with UK buyers. In fact, Isuzu posted record single-month sales in March 2014, delivering 950 new vehicles to British customers, representing a 15.3 per cent increase on the same month last year. A total of 1,322 D-Max pick-ups were sold in the first quarter of 2014. It already boasts class-leading fuel efficiency, residual values and a pioneering five-year / 125,000-mile warranty. And now with the boost to its towing capacity I wouldn’t be surprised if the Isuzu D-Max becomes the pick-up of choice for business and recreational users alike.

Welcome to the world, Lamysa Khan
Amir Khan and wife Faryal
Boxer Amir Khan has become a dad for the first time! Khan (27) and wife Faryal (22) became proud parents of baby Lamysa in May – an Arabic name which means ‘soft to the touch’. The former WBA and IBF light-welterweight king announced the news on Twitter and later posted two photos of himself cradling his new born daughter. He said: “Faryal and I are delighted to announce the birth our first child Lamysa Khan everyone doing very well, thank you for all your wishes”. A later tweet read: “Mine and @FaryalxMakhdoom New born baby LAMYSA. Born on 23rd May 2014 at 4:05am #Blessed”. Khan and his wife met when she was a political science student in New York and got engaged in 2012. The couple married in June last year at the Waldorf-Astoria hotel, before returning to the UK for another ceremony attended by more than 4,000 guests in Amir’s hometown of Bolton.
Sheffield street art tribute A tribute to Jasmyn Chan – the Sheffield teenager killed in a tragic hit-and-run – has been created on Arundel Gate by local street artist, Gzos. 14 year old Jasmyn, known by her friends as Jazzy, died in May when she was hit by a car while crossing Normanton Hill in Sheffield. The heroic teenager is said to have pushed her 12 year old friend from danger only to have lost her own life. Jasmyn’s parents Peter Chan and Paula McCullie said: “Our daughter was beautiful, inside and out. I cannot put into words the pain and devastation I feel in my heart knowing she is gone.” The artwork is a lasting memory of the young hero.

HABROS A Solo Exhibition by Aida June 5th - 29th B&B Gallery Words: Jessica F ogarty Imagining the grand life of a gallant egotistical nabob, HABROS delivers a diverse range of screen printed works, highlighting the peculiar artifacts acquired through various means and adventures. Expect an abundant collection of exotic birds, luxurious items and exuberant bouquets, retracing the extravagant journeys of a master printmaker through time and space. Born in Iran, Aida arrived in the UK as a political refugee in the early 1980’s. Now based in London she produces fine art print editions for her avid audience. Aida’s most recent campaign, ‘Print is Power’ takes the form of public workshops, most notably held at the Victoria & Albert Museum, which successfully demonstrate how, with the right design and message, traditional printmaking can allow anyone to make a large-scale social impact. Ed Bradbury and Florence Blanchard, B&B Gallery founders, said: “We’re very excited to welcome Aida’s exhibition to our Sheffield gallery. “Despite a career spanning more than 20 years, this is actually Aida’s very first solo exhibition. “She is a master printer who takes photographs of objects and uses these to create up to 20 layers of collage. She is very experimental. “We took Aida to Sheffield Antiques Quarter recently where she purchased and photographed a selection of art which have been incorporated in to her exhibition.” Responding to Aida’s work, Anna Potter of Sheffield’s Swallows & Damsons Florist, has created an ephemeral installation exclusively for the show. New art for Attercliffe Words: Jessica Fogarty
If you’ve passed through Attercliffe recently, you may have noticed it’s become a brighter place to be. That’s thanks to local businesses Adam Law Solicitors and Highfield Motors; who have teamed up with Sheffield Council to create two giant pieces of colourful artwork. “We want to promote Attercliffe as a positive part of Sheffield” says Arshaid Bashir, director of Adam Law Solicitors. “The artwork on our building shows the rich history of Attercliffe. “It’s been a couple of years in the making but we’re really pleased with the piece that the council created for us.”
Hundreds of cars pass through Attercliffe daily on their commute from the M1 motorway and Meadowhall to the city centre. That’s why Sheffield Council has collaborated with local firms, situated in key locations, providing funding to brighten up neglected areas of the city ahead of key events this summer including The Tour De France. “Passers-by are now greeted by the designs at either end of Attercliffe” adds Mr Bashir. “We’ve had the thumbs-up from a lot of people since the paint work started in May. “Attercliffe is now split in two – old and new Attercliffe – and Adam Law Solicitors are at the

bollywood honour killing Released august 01
A powerful multi-cultural love story set against the shocking backdrop of honour killings in the UK. Three men become firm friends in melting-pot Britain, despite their very different cultural backgrounds. One is a Sardar, the second a Pathan, and the third an Englishman who was born and raised in India. When the Englishman’s daughter weds, his friends get together to organise traditional Asian celebrations. The Sardar’s son Sunny (Sandeep Singh), who has come the UK to continue his education, meets the Pathan’s daughter Sameera (Zara Sheikh) and they quickly fall in love. The blissfully happy young couple hope that their parents will be relaxed about their plans to marry. But the respective families’ intense opposition leads to bitter enmity and ultimate tragedy. Shot in London and Punjab, Avtar Bhogal’s important drama uses actors from Britain, India and Pakistan to explore the complex background to the burning issue of honour killings.

A hit at festivals around India, Barefoot to Goa explores with great sensitivity the Indian middleclass dilemma of what to do with ageing parents and the intergenerational ties that powerfully bind families together. Diya and Prakhar live with their busy parents in bustling Mumbai. Their grandmother in rural Goa regularly sends her son and family countless letters asking them to visit, but never gets a reply, even though her grandchildren love her dearly. One day the kids discover that their mum has been hiding the un-opened letters in a box. They read that their grandmother is ill and upset, decide to set off to see their grandmother in Goa by themselves.
A man with a bandage mask across his face goes on a shooting spree across a Pakistani city, gunning down random people. He soon realises that his actions have no consequences and nobody appears to be interested in his murderous deeds, and so he decides to go on live television with a view to committing suicide on air. And that’s when there is a huge twist in the plot. The film is an unflinching and surreal look at contemporary Pakistan and will provoke and entertain in equal measure. Racy and unafraid of controversy from start to finish, the film is an exhilarating cinematic ride, dealing with persecution, paranoia and that blurry line between dreams and harsh reality. With this, his second feature after Slackistan, Hammad Khan firmly establishes himself as the boldest voice in British Pakistani cinema. Q&A with Dir. Hammad Khan.

This fascinating and fast-paced documentary traces the journey of American-born filmmaker Ellis R. Dungan who arrived in India in 1935 intending to stay for 6 months but ended up staying for 15 years! During this period, he brought many technical innovations to the developing Tamil Film Industry of the 1930s and ‘40s, and infused a sense of professionalism into its filmmaking. All this, without understanding a word of the language! Dungan directed the great Tamil superstar MGR’s first film, Sathi Leelavathi, as well as famed Carnatic vocalist MS Subbulakshmi’s most famous films, Sakuntalai and Meera. The film traces Dungan’s Indian connection right up to 1994, when on a trip to India, the Tamil Film Industry felicitated him in Chennai for his contribution to its development, a good 43 years after he had left India. One of the greatest child characters in cinema history is the little boy Apu in Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali (Song of the Little Road). Kaushik Ganguly’s heart-touching, jewel box of a film is inspired by the real-life actor Subir Banerjee, who played the young Apu. 58 years after Pather Panchali a film student goes in search of Subir. He carries news that a German film festival are keen to honour Subir, but the student discovers a reticent older man, whose life has ironically reflected the tragic character he played. With sparkling character performances and intercut with Ray’s Apu trilogy, this film is cineaste heaven. Q&A with Dir. Kaushik Ganguly.

Hot Yoga
F
or those not familiar with hot yoga, it simply means performing asanas, or poses, in a heated room which mimics the climate of India, yoga’s birthplace.
A smooth summer
them is a further challenge. The front row of six or seven participants were clearly regulars – they mastered the poses as successfully as the instructor, which was helpful for the back row of beginners trying to keep up.
If you were to stand and watch, you’d probably think it looks easy – a combination of stretching and meditating with an occasional nap. How wrong you’d be.
The 60 minute class was more challenging than expected but the peaceful environment does deeply relax the body and mind.
Yoga requires physical, spiritual and mental discipline. The practices aim to transform the body and the mind, and they’re certainly not easy to perform.
Don’t be surprised by any heavy breathing and grunting in the class too. Although you may feel awkward at first, you’ll soon be joining in as it helps to get in the zone and relax.
Hot yoga increases the intensity of a yoga class making it appealing to people who wouldn’t otherwise consider themselves to be a yoga person.
Those who come three or four times a week told me how their bodies had changed – becoming more flexible, toned, and healthier in body and mind.
The heat enables the body to warm-up quickly, move deeper into postures, cleansing the body through sweating, and facilitates a deep meditation through focus and breathing.
Many Olympic and international athletes, such as Andy Murray, David Beckham and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, report that hot yoga has contributed to their continued success.
Until now the closest hot yoga studios have been Manchester and Leicester, but it’s finally come to South Yorkshire with Hot Yoga Sheffield being the first dedicated hot yoga studio in the city.
And many singers, models and actresses, such as Lady Gaga, Olivia Palermo and Katie Holmes attribute their toned figure and healthy body to their hot yoga practice.
The Crookes based studio holds 25 classes a week – Monday to Sunday from 7am to 8.30pm – and all levels are welcome to any 60, 75 or 90 minute class. Although I’d practiced yoga on a few occasions previously, this was my first time at hot yoga. The heat really does make a difference but the instructor advises just to sit and hydrate with water if and when it gets too much, rather than leaving the room. Getting in to the poses was what I found most difficult, and once you get there, trying to hold
Don’t expect any immediate results physically – it takes time and dedication to earn a sculpted yoga body. However If you enjoy yoga but prefer a more challenging form of exercise, hot yoga is certainly worth a visit. A single 60 minute yoga class costs £10.75 and 90 minute classes cost £12.50; or book an introductory week (£20) or month (£50). Can you imagine never having to shave or wax again? A hair-free, hassle-free life. It may sound too good to be true, but with the new SopranoXL laser, it is possible! The laser hair removal treatment, most effective on black hair, is available with skin specialist Laura at SurgiCentre MediSpa Rotherham. My first visit began with a consultation and patch test — Laura was able to answer my questions and gave me a skin analysis to make sure the treatment was right for me. Following the patch test, you may see some slight redness around the hair follicle and occasionally some small spots may form but this is normal — simply treat this with Tea Tree or Aloe Vera. I had no reaction to the patch test so I was able to go ahead with my first treatment the following week. In the private treatment room, you may need to undress depending on the area being treated, then simply lay back and relax on the treatment bed, wearing the supplied protective sunglasses. Laura applies a cooling gel to the skin, then begins the laser treatment. The Soprano flashes pure light ten times a second through the surface of the skin. The head is stroked backwards and forwards across the area. With each pass, the coloured pigment in the hair heats up more and more until, at 45ºC, the root is cooked. It is completely safe — the skin doesn’t heat up to the same degree, which is also why it is relatively painless. If you do feel some discomfort, Laura can use a blower to keep you cool and comfortable. The treatment process takes between six and 12 months depending on how dark and coarse the area being treated is, with an average of one treatment per month. There may be very little to see at first — you may think it hasn’t worked, but during the next two weeks the hairs work their way to the surface and will simply wipe off. Each treatment is said to bring about a 30 per cent reduction in hair but most see much more than this. Then this is where the Soprano comes into its own — each visit, Laura increases the power. Hairs that do re-grow start to grow back much thinner. Once the treatment plan is complete, you will see a 90 per cent reduction in hair loss — you may need a topup session or you may be hair free permanently. Thai Sojourn! Thailand screams sumptuous Thai food, beaches, islands, pulsating night life and temples – all bound to give you a literal high. The Buddha culture and deep belief in spirituality has ensured that Thailand is home to some of the most vibrant and beautiful people. My recent trip to Thailand was an unforgettable experience in Phuket and Bangkok.
Words : K avita S hyam
A
s I land in Phuket I realized this pretty paradise has some of the most gorgeous beaches, amazing driving sites which make for an ideal getaway for any holiday maker. I decided to stay at the spectacular Wanakarn Beach Resort & spa by Relais & Cheteaux, which is perhaps one of the best hotels in the city. A word of advice to all: Head to Wanakarn beach resort for the ultimate experience in relaxation! The luxurious 5-star resort arranged for a Mercedes Benz S Class limousine for my airport transfer, and I couldn’t be happier than this to begin my trip with. The resort is about 45 minutes away from the airport and I was driven through thick rubber plantations to get a feel of being in an exotic hideaway. On reaching the resort I witness the hotel is set on a pristine stretch of white sands. This picturesque piece of paradise looks out over the crystal clear waters of the Andaman Sea on Thaimuang Beach. I was welcomed to hold-your-breath modern Thai-style villas with private pools. My spacious villa had noiseless air-conditioning, a bedroom complete with a pillow menu, a living room with an over-sized sofa and an outdoor terrace featuring sun loungers, umbrellas and a sofa – I sure felt like a queen. After a recce of the place, I decided to indulge at their Sukko Spa for a traditional Thai massage to get rid of my jet lag.
At night, I decided to visit the nearby Bangla Street, known for its famous night life. This was a happening place, with people touting to watch a ‘Ping Pong Show’ or ‘Tiger Show’, besides there were kids running around putting flower garlands on the tourists. There were lady-boys on the streets to entice the visitors to watch their cabaret shows or take photos with. And there are plenty of bars, lounges and cafes around in this stretch to suit your mood and pocket! Lined up for day three was a visit to the gorgeous Phi Phi Island. I picked a speedboat because it could venture into more shallow waters due to its size and you could snorkel at more places. I also happily fed the fishes. After the snorkelling stop, the cruise stopped us at Phi Phi Don for a buffet lunch and few hours of free time. I explored the island, strolled barefoot and admired the green waters while sitting on the deck chairs and gazed incredulously at the myriad seashells. On my fourth day, I covered all the beaches from Kamala Beach to Nai Harn Beach, Kata, Karon and Nai Harn which were great for surfing and to catch the sunset. One can rent a surfboard at Kata Beach. I went exploring around the Patong Beach area looking for a place to settle my rumbling tummy! There were plethora of hawker stands, beach vendors, local noodle shops, great Thai and seafood restaurants right up to the finest International dining, I was spoilt for choice.
Post spa session, I decided to explore the pretty property which is set on more than six hectares of tranquil and peaceful pristine beachfront with natural botanical gardens, restaurant, a sweeping infinity pool offering breathtaking views of the ocean and an intimate Thai spa. A stroll out from the villa and I felt time had slowed down in this scenic property. I decided to take an afternoon nap at the blissful al fresco day beds on the beach which were the perfect setting to begin my holiday with. In the evening I indulged in some outdoor activities and took bicycles and kayaks for some serious fun at the resort. After that I decided to drink fresh coconut water and not-to-be-missed Thai fusion food while catching Phang Nga’s spectacular sunset. I also lazed around at my private pool for a quick swim and then headed to the Twin Waters restaurant (for their scrumptious Phad Thai and spring rolls) which serves insanely delicious gourmet meals. One can also indulge in yachting, waterfall gazing, and elephant riding which happens a few minutes away from the property.
Thereafter, I headed to the nearby Jungceylon shopping mall where I parked myself for a couple of hours for shopping and gorging on yummy-licious food before heading back to the marvelous Wanakarn resort for a few more blissful hours thereafter. On the last day of my Phuket trip, I made a quick visit to the mesmerizing Phuket Fantasea which is a theme park with magic and cultural shows. By the end of the Phuket trip, I was significantly tanned, even sun burnt, however it was worth it! I enjoyed the sun, the sand and the sea like never before!
On my second day I decided to visit the awe-inspiring Great Buddha which is absolutely worth it for a panoramic view on a mountain. I followed this up with parasailing at Patong beach, I decided to get adventurous for once! Here I was strapped to a parachute and attached to a speedboat to fly around.
The next and last leg of my trip was at Bangkok – the Venice of the east. I took an early morning flight to Bangkok and headed to another gorgeous hotel in the central area of the city- Mandarin Oriental hotel. This landmark hotel on the banks of Chao Phraya River is breathtaking. The legendary hotel is the epitome of contemporary luxury combined with oriental heritage, exuding traditional

Thai charm. My verdict is that this is one of the classiest hotel in the Thai capital to date and staying here is an experience not to be missed. Hard to resist the charm and allure of the place, I was tempted not to venture outside thanks to my luxurious, colonial style room in the garden wing, complete with fine Thai fabrics, canopied beds and teak furniture, a large pool by the river, an exotic spa, a gym and fine food and a cooking school. This 120-year old property is a tourist attraction in its own right. Besides I sure was spoilt for choice with eight restaurants, including Le Normandie, serving excellent French cuisine and Sala Rim Nam, one of the best Thai restaurants in Bangkok. An afternoon tea at the author’s lounge or the best jazz in town at the Bamboo Bar I was confused to the hilt! I decided to indulge in their fabulously interesting and relaxing spa. Oriental spa is legendary, perhaps the epitome of contemporary luxury combined with oriental heritage. I even tried their jetlag massage which is an ideal massage to banish dehydration, fatigue and sluggishness associated with jetlag and the therapy lasted for 90 minutes. Within an easy walking distance of the Mandarin Oriental, and easily accessible by free shuttle ferry provided by the hotel was the Asiatique the riverfront. I am glad it was a part of my itinerary, be it souvenirs or cabaret show(Calypso) or Thai boxing or to simply get a view of the gorgeously lit up city on the Bangkok Eye, Asiatique is ideal. My second day in Bangkok was reserved for sightseeing, so after an elaborate and hearty breakfast at The Verandah restaurant, I took a water taxi and headed to the Grand Palace. I am told the construction of the Grand Palace started in 1782 when the capital of Siam was moved from Thonburi to Bangkok. Next on my agenda was the temple of largest Reclining Buddha statue or Wat Pho which was close to the Grand Palace. The oldest structure was constructed nearly 200 years before Bangkok became Thailand’s capital. The gold-plated Reclining Buddha statue is 46 meters long and 15 meters high, and commemorates the passing of the Buddha into Nirvana. Wat Arun was next on my list which is Bangkok’s iconic temple, aka the Temple of Dawn. Towering at 260 ft above the Chao Phraya River, not too far from the Grand Palace, it was a sight to behold! I headed back to Mandarin Oriental and decided to have a hearty dinner at their popular Thai restaurantSala Rim Naam. I was welcomed to the restaurant with live performances by beautiful Thai dance troupes namely Usavadee, Srivichai, Serng Tab Laan, peacock tail dance, masked dance, followed by traditional Thai boxing alongside live
instrumental music. I soothed my eyes and soul with these beautiful performances besides relished varied sumptuous Thai food. No trip to Bangkok is complete without shopping on your agenda. On the last day, I hopped on to a BTS sky train to Siam square which is synonymous with shopping and entertainment. Well, I have lots to take back home from the land of smiles! I am all smiles and yearning to go back.

Work smarter not harder Celebrating Ramadan… Words: Matthew Watson Sunday 29th June marks the beginning of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is a one month period of daylight fasting for the Muslim community and is considered the holiest season in the Islamic year. Those taking part in Ramadan abstain from eating during the daytime, only sitting down for a meal before sunrise and after sunset. Fasting is one of the Five Pillars of the Islamic faith and is intended to teach Muslims lessons in spirituality, humility and patience. It is not just food that Muslims abstain from during the period; anything deemed ill-natured or excessive, such as drinking and smoking, are also cut out from their daily lives. Restraining from everyday enjoyment and cravings is seen as an act of obedience to God, as well as a chance to amend for previous sins. Muslims are encouraged to partake in charitable activities, voluntary work and many will look to re-read the entire of the Qur’an during Ramadan. Some local restaurants amend their opening times during the period, with fasting finishing upon the sighting of the next new moon – usually 29 or 30 days after its start date. The end of Ramadan is marked by the ‘Breaking of the Fast’ festival that includes special services, processions and a daytime meal, and is seen as both a celebration of the end of fasting as well as a way of thanking Allah for helping them practice self-control throughout the previous month.
Why the need for business support? Business coach, Irshad Akbar, explains… Businesses don’t know what they don’t know. Most business owners invest in bricks and mortar and hope that their business will grow. However it has been proved throughout decades that a business is only as good as its staff. No matter what stage that you are in business, it is vital that you seek some kind of business support. The support that you require will depend on your personal circumstances, experience, qualifications and sector – but what most people don’t realise is that business support is available at little or no cost to the business. For many SME owner-managers, especially those of micro-firms, their business life is often lonely and isolated, and owner-managers seek a confidante to provide advice (i.e. intangible services), but this confidante is not necessarily the accountant or the bank manager. Therefore, an important dimension of business support is being a ‘trusted partner’, a confidante, having empathy and providing a personal relationship with the owner-manager. Twenty years ago businesses were established on hard work and perseverance, with the advent of digital technology, business owners now have to work smarter not harder.
The trusted partner or confidante can be categorised into three categories: a mentor, business advisor or business coach. These three areas of business support can assist in growing your business and also how to address issues and concerns that include raising finances, developing strategies, visioning, innovation, assistance with legal issues that include HMRC and Employment Law. Business support is vital for the growth of any business. In most cases business owners established their business because they found a gap in the market or were skilled in their particular area of expertise. However running a business is much more than just being good at what you are doing. As a business owner you have to be the accountant, HR manager, legal expert, marketing expert, etc. This is the reason why a trusted individual can provide support and assistance to grow the business. Currently there are a number of initiatives that the government has made available to support business to grow and develop. These include: Growth Vouchers up to a value of £2,000; Growth Accelerator offering support in: Access to Finance, Business Development or Growth through Innovation; and Skills Made – assisting SME business in recruitment of apprentices through the Youth Contract and AGE Grant where SME’s are offered a wage subsidy and a training grant. For additional information on business support available for your business contact Irshad Akbar on 07943422916.

t’s the first of its kind in Sheffield – a contemporary Chinese café serving up authentic desserts from Snow Ice to Bubble Tea and Sago Desserts.
“It’s been a popular concept in cities like London and Manchester for many years, so due to demand we’re bringing it to Sheffield for the first time” says café manager Stacey Lim. Having recently undergone a big refurbishment, ChaChaIce now boasts two floors of seating, with a Chinese and English combined décor – traditional English country wooden tables with Chinese wall art and flat screen TVs. “The menu has been adapted to tempt the tastebuds of both our Chinese and English customers too” adds Stacey. “We’ve found that the dishes combining favourite ingredients from both countries have proven most successful.” Choose from nine flavours of Snow Ice – a sort of smoothie and ice cream unique blend. Chinese favourites include: Bubble Milk Tea and Lychee while English favourites include fruit yogurt, mango and biscotti. There’s also a choice of crepes, waffles, cakes, macaroons and sago desserts – all home-made
fresh on site each day. The sago dessert menu features grass jelly sago, mango and glutinous rice balls and coconut milk sago. Cake flavours include: Oreo, Ferrero Rocher, golden apple or green tea and red bean. Bubble Tea, also known as pearl or boba milk tea is fast becoming a favourite refreshment on the menu. Invented in Taiwan, the tea-based drink comes in 16 flavours – from honeydew melon to passion fruit and mocha mixed with red or green tea. Plus there’s with a choice of five toppings. If you prefer something simpler, choose from a choice of traditional teas, flavoured teas and coffees. The café is open Monday to Sunday from 9.30am – 9pm. “We serve up a traditional oriental breakfast – available all day – but it’s at lunch, dinner and late evenings when the sweet treats are in demand” says Stacey. “The portions are plentiful – enough to share between two or a group of friends could share a selection between them. And it’s affordable too – just £5pp for a drink and dessert.” Words: J essica F ogarty

Abdul’s authentic Indian cuisine

I
t’s no frills – just good food. That’s the concept behind Abdul’s Takeaway and Diner Sheffield – a new Indian dining experience which opened its doors on Ecclesall Road in February. The modern café style interior has a spacious seating area, where diners can watch the team of chefs preparing their dishes fresh for order in the open kitchen. There is a relaxed, informal atmosphere, but what the staff do take seriously is the quality of food. Abdul’s Sheffield follows the success of its two sister venues in Wakefield and Pontefract. The Wakefield venue was the first to open more than 15 years ago, and due to popular demand, the second venue opened in Pontefract seven years later. We started with popadoms (£0.40) and a pickle tray (£1.50) while we browsed the menu. The mango chutney was the best we’ve tasted yet. It gave us high hopes for what was yet to come.
are created bespoke to a customer’s tastes – nothing is pre-made. “Let us know your allergies, dietary requirements and how you hot or mild you like your food and we can we’ll tailor the dishes to your tastes” says restaurant manager Ghul. The menu was 29 years in the making. “We’ve perfected every dish on the menu to cater for both Asian and English palettes – they’re very different” added Ghul. “We take pride in what we serve and always welcome feedback – we’re not too proud to take criticism, it helps us to continually improve.” All food is served to the table on plastic trays – the no frills concept – fitting with the informal diner style set-up. A takeaway service is available too if you’d prefer to eat at home; but delivery isn’t – so phone and collect. For main course, we choose a Chicken Balti (£6.75) – chicken stir-fried with tomatoes, onions and spices; Shah Jahani (£6.45) – a rich and creamy lamb dish named after the Moghul Emperor Shah Jahan; and Chicken Massala (£6.45) – chicken cooked in ground spices, garnished with tomatoes and coriander.
We chose a selection of starters – Massala Machi (£3.65), Punjabi Paratha (£3.75) and Sweet and sour chicken wings (£3.10). The Massala Machi is a fish dish marinated in lemon juice and spices and accompanied with a side salad. Light and healthy. The Punjabi Paratha is a shallow fried bread filled with chicken and mushrooms in a lightly spiced cream sauce. Quite a heavy dish, I’d only recommend this for those with a big appetite. And the new addition to the menu – Sweet and sour chicken wings – were plentiful, full of flavour, but spicier than expected for a sweet and sour dish. It’s by no means fast food. Service takes the time it would in any restaurant, as dishes

The prices compare to most other Indian takeaways and restaurant but the added advantage at Abdul’s is that most main dishes are served with a complimentary plain rice, chips, chapatti or naan. I’d recommend the Mango Lassi (£1.20) to accompany too – a refreshing sweet and rich Indian drink. And if you’ve room for dessert take your pick from a selection of fresh Indian favourites. An impressive new concept for Sheffield! Open 5pm - 11pm Monday to Sunday. 0114 272 6111 www.abduls.com Words : J essica F ogarty

Review: Wagamama
Words : J essica F ogarty
Warm chilli chicken salad
Grilled tuna steak
Team Chic take a cookery class at Wagamama Japanese Noodle Bar, Meadowhall. Wagamama opened its first restaurant in London’s Bloomsbury 21 years ago. Inspired by traditional Japanese ramen bars and Asian flavours, the concept was to offer a new kind of dining experience – one that offers fresh Japanese-inspired food in a friendly, vibrant setting.
Wagamama facts •
•
It certainly worked! Today, Wagamama is an awardwinning series of restaurants, spanning 17 countries with more than 3,500 employees. “It’s incredible to think we’ve gone global” says Meadowhall restaurant manager Hayley Burkin. “We now have more than 100 restaurants in the UK alone, two of which are here in Sheffield – Meadowhall and Leopold Square. Our next stop is America.” Each season, Wagamama introduces a new menu. “No one wants to eat hot soups in summer” says chef Ken Lockwood. “Our summer menu offers healthy light dishes – all made with the freshest, seasonal produce and under 600 calories.”
•
Twelve tonnes of noodles are sold in UK Wagamama restaurants every week. That’s equivalent to 930 miles or the size of two T-Rex dinosaurs.
Mochi ice-creams
Did you know, Wagamama translates to naughty child? The Wagamama brand doesn’t see itself as perfect; they constantly need to evolve and develop like a naughty child does. Kids take priority at Wagamama. They have their own menu and their dishes take priority service in the kitchen. Sweet Onigiri
“What’s unique about Wagamama is that we make every individual dish fresh to order, so if you have any dietary requirements we can take out an individual ingredient; that’s rare in a restaurant chain” says Ken.
New to the drinks menu are two smoothies – Twisted Apple and Raspberry Rush. “They’ve been a big hit with our most health conscious customers” Hayley tells us. “They’re made from 100 per cent real fruit, up to five portions per glass, and nothing else is added.”
“We also guarantee our food to arrive at your table within 15 minutes, so we’re fresh and we’re fast – you can spend that long in a takeaway queue on a Saturday in Meadowhall” Ken adds.
The Twisted Apple had a rich, liquorish flavour – a blend of apple, fennel and tarragon – but it was the Raspberry Rush – blended apples and raspberries – that came out top with the Chic team.
We can’t fault a single dish, but we’re most impressed with the grilled tuna steak which sits on a bed of stir fried sweet potatoes with mixed vegetables, salad and an avocado, wasabi and nouc-cham dressing. Wow.
New to the main course menu are four new dishes – a coconut seafood broth; lobster super salad; warm chilli chicken salad and grilled tuna steak. The dishes arrive at the table at varied times – as soon as they’re cooked, they’re out.
If you’re feeling hungry then take your pick from three new side dishes on the summer menu – pork ribs, grilled pork belly bulgogi wraps and a mushroom onigiri. The ribs come smothered in sesame seeds and a - 15 -
sticky bbq sauce; make your own pork belly wraps with the individual crisp gem lettuce leaves; and dip into the sweet, sour and hot sauce with your sticky rice and mushroom balls, deep-fried in breadcrumbs. Room for dessert? You must sample the selection of mochi ice-creams – choose from coconut, raspberry and toasted sesame – or mix it up with two of each. Although at first we found it a strange sensation, biting into ice-cream balls, we couldn’t get enough of the sweet treats dipped into a smooth chocolate sauce. Sweet Onigiri is another new dish on the dessert menu. Like the Mushroom Onigiri side dish, the Sweet Onigiri are balls of sticky rice mixed with coconut, deep-fired with panko breadcrumbs and served with a passion fruit sauce. Naughty but nice. “It’s our best menu yet” Ken boasts. “They’re uncomplicated, fuss-free dishes that work.”

Grip the second chopstick with your index finger and thumb. (This is the stick that moves). Place your thumb over the side of the second chopstick, so it rests above the first.

Indian restaurant chain, Akbar’s, has been awarded the winning titles of Restaurant of the Year and Best of Glasgow, at the Scottish Curry Awards 2014. The ceremony took place at the Thistle Hotel Glasgow in April; where the restaurant took top place in two of the awards categories. The Restaurant of the Year award honours the restaurant which serves up the finest curry cuisine and atmosphere in Scotland; while The Best of Glasgow title awards the most popular restaurant in the city, with good food and great value for money. Shabir Hussain, owner of the Akbar’s chain, said: “We were honoured to be nominated for the two categories, but to win is a great achievement. “We opened the restaurant on Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow, in 2012, and its popularity has continued to grow. “The two awards recognise the hard work and dedication from myself and my team.” The Akbar’s chain employs more than 400 staff members and has more than ten restaurants in Sheffield, Leeds, Bradford, Birmingham and many more cities amongst the UK. Mohammed Saleem: Rise to Sweet Success A short history of Bradford’s Kashmir Crown Bakeries store As with most children, Mohammed Saleem’s idea of what he should do in terms of a career were quite different to his parents. Saleem was born in 1940 in Bagh Sheri, Mirpure Azad Kashmir, and whilst his dad would have firmly liked Saleem to go to college get on the career ladder that way, he had other plans. Whilst in Bagh Sheri, Mirpure, he sat his Matriculation exams, and shortly afterwards got a job in a textile mill there. This was merely the beginning of Azid’s career, though. A couple of year’s into his textile job Saleem wanted out. “I had a deep desire to strike out on
my own, but I didn’t have the means” he said. And a few years later he would make that desire a reality. With just a fiver in his pocket Saleem turned up in Bradford, England in 1961. He settled in Bradford working in yet another textiles factory. Soon after he got a job in a shop called Kashmiri Food Store, where he worked for another five years. This is realy where he learnt about the Asian food market and honed in his skills in buying and selling, this is something which would later come in handy when he decided to open his own business. Taking a job as an Asian sweets delivery driver. This gave him the idea for his business; he would start an Asian bakery and confectionery shop. He bought an oven and a mixer and began making a range of Asian bakery products, all of which proved very popular with the population of Bradford.
A few years later, in 1970, Saleem bought a bakery store on Carrington Street, called Kashmir Crown Bakeries, which was one of the first Asian bakeries in Europe. This is where he developed his very special sweet, Crown Cake Rusk. The cake is still made to the same recipe to this day! Now, 43 years later, the company has grown to something which even Saleem himself could not have predicted. Saleem is still the company Chairman, but has now passed on the managerial responsibilities on to the next generation. KCB now distribute to Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway and Spain, along with USA and Canada. The company is now renowned worldwide!

And over the past four years he has ridden high at the top of his game to a rapturous reception in Britain, State-side and beyond. But his most recent success is not sport. Khan became a father for the first time in May 2014 when his wife Faryal gave birth to baby girl Lamysa; his proudest moment yet he tells us. “It’s a blessing. She is so special to us and she is such a well behaved baby too – she’s sleeping well.”
Khan
He beams as he talks of her. “Faryal is doing most of the work though, she’s done amazing. “I’m trying to help out as much as I can but she’s a strong woman and just gets on with it.” When asked if they had plans for a brother or sister for Lamysa, Khan laughed: ““Hmm not just yet. Faryal needs a break at the moment as she suffered a lot with the birth.” Another challenge faces Khan this month as he celebrates the Muslim festival of Ramadan.

“It [Ramadan] definitely makes training more difficult” says Khan. “Last Ramadan I trained in-between and I coped OK. I don’t work out while I’m fasting though, I’ll do it in the evenings when I have a couple of hours spare. “It’s always hard because your body is so tired. I’ve done a lot of research in to fasting though and it doesn’t do your body any harm starving it for a short period of time, even as a sportsman.
heffield welcomed Britain’s highest profile boxer to the stage for an intimate evening at the DoubleTree Hilton Hotel.
Amir ‘King’ Khan, as he’s known to fans, chose the steel city as his first venue to host ‘An Evening with Amir Khan’ – where the public could interview him up-close-and-personal for the first time.
“The positive is that Ramadan gives me time to relax and spend quality time with my family. “I like to make the most of my time at home and do charity work, which is really important to me too.”
“I’ve done a lot of charity events and dinners but this is officially my first evening, dedicated to me, where fans can ask me anything they want to” said Khan, who sat relaxed and happy to talk despite the long line of eager fans spanning the full length of the hotel function room waiting for their picture with the sports star.
It’s not yet confirmed when Khan’s next fight will be following Ramadan but he’s planning to take a break he tells us: “I’d like to find time to take a holiday this summer – maybe Dubai. “I should have been in Pakistan in June but because of problems out there at the moment I’ve had to postpone my trip – hopefully I’ll be able to visit after Ramadan.
“It’s really exciting to have my own evening and give my fans my time” he added.
“I’m impressed with the British Summer this year though – I’m making the most of time outdoors in the UK while the sun is shining. It’s a rarity isn’t it!?”
“I’m really keen for them to get to know the real me, outside of the ring, where we can talk on a personal level.”
An Evening with Amir Khan was organised by MDG Events – a specialist events and promotions company helping to bring your sporting idols that little bit closer.
Born in Bolton, Lancashire in 1986, Khan catapulted into the limelight from the 2004 Silver medal Olympic podium. On July 26, MDG Events welcomes footballer turned boxer Curtis Woodhouse to Bramall Lane, Sheffield. Visit www.mdgevents.co.uk for tickets. Prices from £39-£49.

AsianD8 have been playing the match-making game for 10 years, connecting like-minded British Asian professionals through a number of 3 minute dates. Their guests often ask, “Does it actually work?” Their answer is a resounding, “Yes, it does!”
The Tayyibun Annual Charity Iftar Gathering is an unmissable, fully segregated event consisting of emaan boosting lectures, Qur’an recitation by Quraa’ from Egypt, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, a mouth-watering 3 course meal and a charity fundraiser with an auction.

For the braver speed dater, individual tickets start at £15 and for those not ready to commit themselves to the dating game, you can buy the non-dating/spectator ticket which starts at £10.
There will be over fifty renowned scholars and teachers and the event will host and cater for thousands of Muslims to break their fast together in the month of Ramadhaan with a luxurious Iftar dinner.

Fully gender segregated, there will also be a separate area for sisters with children. The event which starts at 5:30pm and ends at 11pm aims to build brotherhood, raise awareness and to fund this year’s chosen charity.
