Chic meets Lee Malia, one fifth of Sheffield metalcore band...
Bring Me The Horizon
Last summer, Bring Me the Horizon (BMTH) were poised to release the most important album of their career, ‘Sempiternal’. The album triggered a year of triumphs for the young band from Sheffield, entering the UK album chart at #3 and selling more than 300k copies to date, it firmly put them on the map and proved that a metal band can make their mark on the mainstream.
Words : Jessica F ogarty
Having already embarked on extensive sell out tours across the globe including performances in Australia, the UK, Europe and the USA, BMTH are reaching new heights of success.
- 10 -
What have you and the band been up to this year? Mostly touring. We haven’t played a bad show all year – every show gets better and better. What was the reaction to your latest album, Sempiternal? It went down really well. We were well happy with the response. How do you prepare yourself before you go on stage? I stretch my neck. I have to throw my head all over the place so I need to make sure it’s well stretched out. That’s about it. Do you get to spend much time back home? Yeah, I’m home quite a lot actually. If we have tour dates at the weekend then I’ll probably spend the rest of the week at home.
How’s life for BMTH? Good thanks, not bad at all. As well as making music and touring with the band, you’ve been working on a separate project, tell us more? Yeah, this month sees the launch of my new guitar – the Ltd. Ed. Lee Malia Epiphone Signature Les Paul Custom Artisan. It’s something I’ve been working on for a couple of years. I’ve used it on tour for the past year and I love it. I wouldn’t use it if I didn’t believe in it. Did you design it yourself ? I did. I wanted to design something classy to suit any genre, not just a guitar for metal music lovers. It’s more of a classic design – there’s no skulls or flames as you’d expect from me. It’s suitable for all abilities and it’s affordable too. Anyone could pick it up and not know it’s designed by me. How old were you when you picked up your first guitar? 14. I’d had one in my room for years because my dad used to play, but I was never bothered about it so I sold it. Soon after, I had £80 in Christmas money so I bought a really basic one from a shop in Meadowhall Shopping Centre. It was really shit but it was enough to teach me the basics. My dad taught me chords then I watched YouTube videos to learn the rest. I later started having guitar lessons from a local legend in Sheffield, Frank White, apparently he was once asked to play for The Rolling Stones. What were your career ambitions as a child? I wanted to be a footballer – I used to play in the Sunday League but that’s as far as that dream ever went. As soon as I started taking guitar lessons, I got obsessed with it and I never considered any other career after that.
Do you see your bandmates back home or do you enjoy time apart after touring? We all go our separate ways to be honest. I go back home to Rotherham, but I’ll meet up with the boys for a night out in Sheffield or we’ll go to the cinema. You have a massive fan base, is it hard to go out and about without being spotted? Not so much for me, I can go under the radar, but Oli [lead singer] can’t go anywhere without being stopped by a fan for a photo. He gets recognised pretty much everywhere he goes. What music do you listen to? Soft, ambient music. Our music is so loud and we tour with loud bands so the last thing I want to listen to when I get home is more loud music. Are any other band members working on individual projects, aside from making music? Not really. Oli has his clothing label, Drop Dead, and Jordan owns his own studio in Newbury which he had before the band formed but aside from that we’re focusing on our music. What’s next for you? We’re touring Europe this autumn then a few shows in Asia before we’re back in the UK for our Wembley show in December. We can’t wait for that! www.bringmethehorizon.co.uk Facebook.com/bmthofficial Twitter: @bmthofficial

Do you play instruments too? I can play a little guitar but only a little. My bandmates are teaching me more advanced guitar whenever they get the chance. What inspires your music? I’m inspired by the things I’ve been through but also anything as random as hearing a fact or seeing something out of a train window. I spend a lot of time on trains.

the girl, not the state
Tell us about your debut album, No Romeo, released last month? I’d wrote an album before I realised that’s what I was doing. It just kind of happened – I was writing for about two years. It explores a spectrum of styles and moods. My music always tells a story. I’m really happy with the reaction from fans, they seem to really get it. I do fit under the pop genre but my music isn’t what I’d categorise as ‘cheesy pop’. I can appreciate a good song that has been written well and has a catchy hook and a good chorus, but I like things with a bit more depth. I like things that push boundaries.
The Nottingham songstress’ breakthrough single ‘Solo Dancing’ entered the top 20 single charts accumulating well over a million plays online and going on the BBC Radio 1 playlist, cementing her position as one of the UK’s most hotly tipped and exciting new voices. Indiana’s music is testament to a flourishing new front for pop music. She thrives on removing the over-synthesised fanfare of commercial pop by delivering pure, intellectual and cinematic music. Her live performances are nothing short of mesmerising and her pristine voice has a haunting, arresting quality that draws you in. Kicking off in Glasgow on October 30th, the closing months of 2014 will see Indiana take in the major cities of the UK following a hectic summer of festivals including Reading/Leeds, Wireless, Beacons, Bestival and Radio 1 One Big Weekend. Armed with a whole new arsenal of material from her debut album, No Romeo, the tour will stop off at The Plug, Sheffield on Friday, October 31st.
Do you have a favourite track? On the album, it has to be Solo Dancing. This was my first single campaign. Aside from the album though, Animal, is my favourite track. How do you balance being a musician and a mum-of-two? It can be challenging at times but I have a lot of support. I’m lucky to have a Mum who is retired so I have a full-time nanny on-hand whenever I need her. My partner, James, is also selfemployed so he’s a hands-on Dad.
What have been the best-bits of 2014? It’s been a really cool year for me. I’ve played a lot of festivals but Bestival was the best along with Reading and Leeds. They were both so different – the crowd at Reading were overflowing the venue and crowd-surfing – I took my first on-stage selfie with them, but in contrast the Leeds crowd were really drawn to me and were listening intently. Leeds had the stand-out crowd, they really connected with me and we could speak between songs.
Do you plan to have more children? Definitely. I want four children. I’ve always wanted a big family. What has been your most memorable moment, career wise? Singing to the queen was surreal. I was so scared about it but when she walked in, I calmed down, because she is just a little old lady with a status. She clapped too at the end which was a relief.
How old were you when you started singing? I’ve sang all of my life but I was 22 when I started singing professionally. My sister was always the musical one in the family – she taught me how to sing.
What’s next for you? Preparing for my UK tour is what I’m focusing on at the moment. I’m really excited to perform my new music live. It’ll be great to be performing in my hometown of Nottingham, but it’s also great to visit new places and return to places too. I visited The Plug at Sheffield quite recently, supporting Bipolar Sunshine on tour so I’m excited to return on my own headline tour. After that, I’ll be taking a break for Christmas then the fun starts again in 2015.

NICK MULVEY FIRST MIND Words: E mily W hyatt
With a great summer of festivals complete and a UK tour announcement, could Nick Mulvey be one of Britian’s best emerging sensations? His new single ‘Cucurucu’, released late September, is an added cracker to his Top 10 album ‘First Mind’. The single borrows lyrics from DH Lawrence’s poem ‘Piano’. Whether that is a good or bad thing is down to subjectivity. I think, if anything, that shows a lot more thought has gone into the song writing than just completely letting someone else write your music. Mulvey is known for his song writing as well as his beautiful tone, and I admire him for that. ‘Cucurucu’, whilst a mouthful, is fun and rhythmic. An extremely catchy song. The single shows off his beautiful acoustic style. I only wish I had seen him live – a definite event on my ‘to do’ list! The single begins with the relaxing sound of the guitar and is then accompanied softly by the piano. A gentle, soothing, yet upbeat track. What I like about Nick Mulvey is learning his musical history. He studied Ethnomusicology at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies. Prior to that he also studied music and art in Havana, Cuba. Also, before beginning his solo career, he was part of ‘Portico Quartet’. Through such culture and life experience, these factors must influence his singing and song writing, and it is a breath of fresh air to listen to someone who hasn’t auditioned for the X Factor! Nick Mulvey’s autumn headline tour is across the UK throughout October, including The Leadmill, Sheffield, on October 24th.
TWIN ATLANTIC GREAT DIVIDE Words: Emily Whyatt
It’s been three years since Scottish foursome Twin Atlantic rocked our souls with their album ‘Free’ and their new album ‘Great Divide’ epitomizes their mounting success. What I like most about the band is the soft Scottish twang in their singing voices and the fact that they write their own music. ‘Great Divide’ was written in the back of their tour bus and recorded during months of festival performances, and the live, passionate, festival feeling is definitely exerted in the album. It’s as if they are singing to tens of thousands of fans, not a microphone in a recording studio. The album kicks off with ‘The Ones That I Love’, introducing us to the drums of member Craig Kneale and piano of Ross McNae. Yes, the four all sing and play multiple instruments – real rock band material! It may be one of the slowest songs on the album but it prepares us for the more powerful tracks next, which would definitely electrify a festival crowd. ‘Great Divide’ also features the popular single ‘Heart and Soul’ and new single ‘Brothers And Sisters’. Lead singer Sam McTrusty proves the range of his vocal skills in both of these singles, plunging in and out of pitch and volume, with a beautifully clear tone all the way through. His harmonies with the remaining three bandmates add a soft touch which, I think, gives Twin Atlantic their edge over the usual harsh tone of other rock bands. There is some variety in the album with tracks like ‘I Am an Animal’, which reminds me of music by Scottish indie rock band The View, and then alternatively ‘Cell Mate’ reminds me more of American punk rock band Green Day. ‘Great Divide’ exemplifies a range of rock styles, while keeping Twin Atlantic’s Scottish heritage known. Bring the festival home with this album! Their autumn tour kicks off in October featuring a date at Sheffield’s O2 Academy on Wednesday, October 29th.

LUVBUG
DAVID GRAY
Words: Emily Whyatt
JLS star Marvin Humes is now leading the UK’s new dance collective Luvbug. He is joined by Grammy-nominated producer/songwriter JKAY and producer/remixer The White N3rd. Luvbug have been collaborating together for 18 months, delivering songs which will hit the dance scenes from here to Ibiza. The trio combine their skills in song writing, DJing and producing and work with a variety of talent including Nicki Minaj and Britney songwriter Wayne Hector and ‘Gecko (Overdrive)’ singer Becky Hill. Their debut single ‘Resonance’ features British R&B vocalist Talay Riley, and is out on October 5th 2014. I recently saw Marvin actually DJing in a club in Chester. As far as I can remember, he had as much passion and style as the likes of Calvin Harris. Extremely entertaining and I could definitely tell that he was enjoying his new ambition. ‘Resonance’ resembles usual current dance tracks, starting with a slow single beat, and having a faster, catchier chorus. Talay Riley’s falsetto voice suits the electronic and anthemic style of the track. Riley’s not so deep pitch does in fact contrast the resonance of the lyrics. Some quite clever songwriting here by the collective. The track has appeared in the Top 10 of the Hype Machine Chart, and it’s no surprise with its catchy chorus. The lyrics, vocals, and house beats are complimentary of each other. The single is also flattered by its tranquil and summery video. Sorry to any Marvin fans, this work is no resemblance of JLS, but ignites new talent from the London-born star. Watch out for the release of ‘Resonance’, as well as other tracks, and DJ sets across Europe by Luvbug.
Words: Emily W hyatt
21 years since his first studio album, David Gray has this year released his tenth studio album, ‘Mutineers’. The indie-rock singer-songwriter’s worldwide success kicked off after the release of his fourth album, ‘White Ladder’ in 2000. The album included some of his most well-known songs like ‘Babylon’ and ‘Sail Away’. Two years after its original release, ‘White Ladder’ was at the top of the UK Albums Chart. ‘Mutineers’ brings more of David’s soulful voice to our ears, but the album includes some singles familiar to Gray’s original style, and some features where he is more out of his comfort zone. The album is Gray’s first release in four years and begins with his new single ‘Back in the World’, which I suppose marks Gray’s message to the world that, well, he is in fact back. His beautiful guitar and piano playing skills are back, and I think this first single shows a lot of passion in the Altrincham born star. The album seems to take us on a journey of emotions. ‘Back in the World’ is one of the more cheerful tracks, followed by slower, and more thought-provoking singles ‘As the Crow Flies’ and ‘Mutineers’. The finishing track ‘Gulls’ features an echo effect of Gray’s voice and the video matches the slow style of the track, in a creative, ‘old movie’-like feature.

Death from Above 1979 Words: K atrina Cowan
T
o say the second album of ‘Death from Above 1979’ has been eagerly awaited would be an understatement. After the explosive debut album ‘You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine,” fans were devastated to hear of the split in 2006- said to be caused by ‘artistic differences.’ On parting ways, both Sebastien Grainger and Jesse Keele followed their own solo projects to average levels of success, however neither managed to quite reach the levels of success of DFA1979. However, after finally announcing their reunion in 2011 and a series of live shows, including a main stage set at Coachella, the duo announced the release of their second album, ‘The Physical World.’ In contrast however to the excitement of the fans, in a recent interview with NME, the duo seemed to be almost begrudgingly getting back together claiming, “We couldn’t get away from it,” as they both attempted to follow solo careers with mediocre success. In spite of their almost moody responses in said interviews, Keele and Grangier have claimed that they are most looking forward to the performances. “We want people to have the same visceral, exciting experiences that made us who we are.” It becomes clear in this interview the real reason for the reunion, a reason to perform live. Both are clearly passionate musicians and crave the adrenaline rush of performing live to an equally passionate audience. “This record is a key for us. It will permit us to go play the shows we want to play and it gives us the freedom to do what we want.” Being made up of just one drummer and one bassist, the duo take the term “drum and bass” very literally and in spite of their small numbers they have always managed to create impressive amounts of energy in their previous live shows. The question is whether they can continue this
‘The Physical World’ OUT NOW
energy onto their second album? Well, to those expectant fans eagerly awaiting a second addition to ‘You’re a Woman, I’m a Machine,’ you will not be disappointed. Even with ten years apart and two different solo projects, DFA1979 doesn’t seem to have changed at all. It is almost impossible to spot the divides between the debut and latest album, save perhaps a minor ‘tone down’ in the latest one. Produced by Dave Sardy, ‘The Physical World’ combines the raw drum and bass of the previous album with slightly softer elements. The track ‘White is Red,’ seems almost pop-punkish and out of place amongst the typical raw and loud emotion conveyed in the rest of the album, suggesting that they are perhaps trying to widen their audience and make their music more mainstream. Apart from this track, the rest of the album definitely echoes the previous debut album with its raw vocals and noisy drum parts. The first release ‘Train Wreck’ begins sounding like good old DFA1979, however proceeds to offer us some fairly catchy, dare I say, pop sounds as it continues, suggesting once again they are widening their audience. This track and ‘The Physical World’ also feature the characteristic synth sounds the fans loved in the first album. So although, there is a suggestion they have softened up, small parts of DFA1979 cerca 2004, definitely still remain in this album. However, as both Keele and Grangier wished, this is an album for performance. At just over 35 minutes, the songs seem to merge into one another- this is an album to be listened to in full, not individually. The songs go together perfectly to create an energetic live set, exhilarating for both the performers and the audience, however, individually they are difficult to differentiate.

Q.A with UNION J Words: Jessica Fogarty
It’s been two years since Union J went from talented unknowns to overnight sensations on the 2012 series of The X Factor, and as the old cliché goes, “they have been on quite a journey”.
What’s the best thing about your job? Doing what we love. What has been the most memorable moment of your career to date? Performing at Summertime Ball to an audience of 80,000.
After a change of record labels and some time out of the spotlight recording a brand new album, the four-piece are back with a tighter image and a renewed focus on their soaring vocals.
X Factor is back on our screens for another year – are you watching? We sure are – whenever we get the chance. Simon Cowell is the bollocks. We’re so glad to see him back on the show.
Josh Cuthbert, George Shelley, JJ Hamblett and Jaymi Hensley ready to take on the charts again.
You’ve released two books and launched your own merchandise range including Union J dolls and fragrance – any more plans? Not at the moment. Our fragrance launched in September and a second wave of dolls has hit the High Street so for now we’re just focusing on our music.
Welcome back to the media spotlight boys! Why the change of direction? We loved our first album and are so lucky to be able to release another one but we wanted to take a new direction. We’re not waving goodbye to our pop roots, just mixing up our sound to appeal to a wider audience.
What’s next for you? Mostly radio shows planned for the winter – promoting our new music. Next year we plan to go on our own tour, or support on tour.
How’s 2014 been for Union J? The first half of the year we spent in the studio recording our new album. We did manage to fit in some gigs in late summer though.
Who would you like to support on tour? Ed Sheeran would be a dream to tour with, but we’d also be happy to support another boy band. It’s always a good laugh when two boy bands are on tour together.
What has been the reaction to your latest single, Tonight? Really good. We were number five on iTunes on the day we released it. We’re yet to decide what the second single will be, but we’ve decided on the third. Details coming soon!
Have you ever been star struck? Yes – all of the time. When you get to meet massive industry names in the flesh it can be overwhelming. People like Pharrell, Will I Am, Miley Cyrus and 1D.
What’s changed the most about life since the X Factor? People knowing who you are.

T HE S ATUR DAYS : G RE ATE ST H ITS TOUR Words : Jessica F ogarty
Following the release of their milestone Greatest Hits album, The Saturday’s hit the road to showcase their journey so far. The five-piece pop band took their tour around the country starting in Glasgow and ending in Plymouth with a stop-off in Sheffield mid-September. Bucking the trend by releasing the collection whilst at the height of their career, Rochelle Humes told Chic: “It’s far from a farewell and more of a celebration of what we’ve achieved so far. We’ll be back in the studio later on in the year to start recording our fifth studio album.” Featuring over thirteen Top Ten singles, the ‘Greatest Hits’ is a celebration of a successful and enduring pop career the band have enjoyed since they first debuted in 2008 with ‘If This Is Love’. Although not a sold-out set, The Saturday’s fans were out in full force at Sheffield City Hall for day three of the tour. The whole audience were up on their feet from start to finish – waving their arms and singing the words back to the girls on request. The vocals were impressive given the intensity of the dance routines involved and the height of their heels (even those worn by five month pregnant member Una). There were at least four outfit changes too with sparkles involved at every interval – we didn’t expect anything less! The stage was transformed into a showstopping stairwell which enabled the girls to climb high above the crowds – lit only by spotlights. Their performance included three brand new tracks alongside fan favourites such as ‘Higher’, ‘All Fired Up’, ‘Ego’, ‘Up’ and the chart topping ‘What About Us’. Having now sold over five million records, with four top ten albums, The Saturdays continue to be a whirlwind force in the world of pop which shows no sign of slowing.
A nt and D ec ’ s S aturday Night Takeaway on Tour Words: E llie Sennett
Britain’s favourite comedy duo Ant and Dec took to the stage at Sheffield Motorpoint Arena to entertain more than 15,000 people. The dynamic duo, Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnely, provided over three hours of pure comedy entertainment throughout their ‘Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway Tour’ which is a spin off from their hit TV show ‘Ant and Dec’s Saturday night takeaway’. Audience members were up on their feet from the get-go, with guest hosts Andy Collins and Chris Moyle’s entertaining the crowds with their witty jokes and crazy dancing routines. Upon the announcement of Ant and Dec to the stage the whole arena was shaking with excitement, however to the audience’s surprise Ant and Dec arrived through the back of the arena, high fiving their ecstatic fans on the way down. During Ant and Dec’s audience introductions, which involved them going round and greeting several lucky audience members, a special moment was shared by one northern couple who got engaged in front of the cheering crowd. Following these introductions the arena was spilt into two sides, one side cheering for Dec and the other cheering for Ant, this competiveness ran throughout the whole night with Ant and Dec competing in a series of challenges in ‘Ant V Dec’. These challenges involved the boys going back to school and answering general knowledge questions such as ‘What is the capital of Canada’ and ‘How do you spell lightning?’ this Challenge was won - 22 -
by Ant much to his half of the arenas delight. Round two involved the boys climbing rope ladders to the roof of the arena and collecting a key to open a treasure chest. Once the chest was opened giant boulders were released into the audience, which they desperately bounced towards the stage. This challenge ended in a tie breaker with Dec’s team taking the crown. As on the TV show, audience participation was a strong theme throughout the night with three fortuitous audience members taking part in the ‘Sing-a-long Live’ with guest star and multiaward winning artist Peter Andre which he claimed was ‘the most nuts sing along live’ he had ever participated in. Peter showed his funny side when he was challenged to go up to an unsuspecting bartender backstage and say and do whatever Ant and Dec told him to, through a secret ear piece. Alongside Peter Andre were other star guests including: Ashely Roberts, who performed her new single ‘Woman Up’; the cast of award-winning West-End show Riverdance also performed; and Little Ant and Dec made an appearance via video link while chatting to British girl band Little Mix. The most exciting part of the evening was when one audience member was selected to play ‘Don’t just watch the adverts, win them’ a highly popular part of the ITV programme. After answering a series of general questions the contestant chose to gamble away the four prizes she had already claimed in the hope of winning the twenty prizes that were up for grabs. Her gamble was successful and she walked away with 20 prizes including a new car, a family annual pass to all the Merlin attractions throughout the UK and a holiday. The end of the show came all too soon for the eager audience members, however Ant and Dec didn’t disappoint with their closing performance. They performed a musical escapade of classic disco hits including ‘Can’t Touch This’, ‘Jump Around’ and ‘Let’s Get Ready to Rumble’. The takeaway tour was a huge success in Sheffield – let’s hope it returns next year!
R ECOR D ATT EN DA N CE AT TH E 2 0 1 4 LAD B R OK E S ST LEG ER FESTIVA L South Yorkshire’s most stylish ladies were out in force during September for the return of the annual Ladbrokes St Leger Festival at Doncaster Racecourse. This year’s hotly anticipated festival saw record attendances – attracting crowds of more than 60k over the four-day weekend. Mark Spincer, managing director of Doncaster Racecourse, said: “The Ladbrokes St Leger was as exciting a race as ever with Kingston Hill, our Racing Post Trophy winner of last year, coming through to victory in the final British Classic of 2014. “It’s been a right royal Ladbrokes St Leger Festival, with Her Majesty The Queen’s Estimate winning the feature race on Friday, the Group Two Socialites Electric Cigarettes Doncaster Cup. “We are also celebrating a record attendance of 61,909, nearly 1,000 up on last year’s previous high of 60,956. “The continuing upwards surge in the popularity of the Ladbrokes St Leger Festival is very pleasing, while the weather has been excellent and race goers have enjoyed themselves.” Day two of the festival – DFS Ladies Day – saw the return of the annual Best Dressed Lady competition – where one South Yorkshire beauty took home an impressive collection of prizes. of identifying the most well turned-out ladies from record crowds of over 14,500 on the day. After narrowing down the field to ten ladies who’d donned the most show-stopping outfits and had been preened to perfection, Ian Filby, chief executive of DFS chose 40 year-old Jayne Walker-Ellis a sales manager from Doncaster who wore a black and white dress and a stunning matching bespoke fascinator designed by local milliner Claire Barker from Pat’s Hats. Jayne scooped a top prize package which included a holiday for two to New York courtesy of raceday sponsors DFS, a Mercedes car for the weekend and tickets to London Fashion Week, courtesy of JCT 600, an overnight stay for two at The Crown Hotel, Bawtry, a year’s membership at Nuffield Health Doncaster and various pamper and shopping vouchers. Ms Walker-Ellis, who attended DFS Ladies Day with her daughter, sisters and mum said: “I’ve enjoyed coming to Ladies Day for the past eight years, it’s a firm fixture on the social calendar and we always look forward to it as a family. “I couldn’t quite believe it when I was chosen as a Best Dressed Lady, it was a real surprise. I can’t wait to go to New York with my boyfriend, it’s somewhere I’ve always wanted to visit.” Jayne will represent Doncaster Racecourse in Yorkshire’s Best Dressed Lady 2014 – taking place back at the Town Moor on Racing Post Trophy Day Saturday 25th October.

Want thicker, fuller-looking hair?
• Unmanageable hair? Straighten it out!
Sheffield boutique salon, Tim Hyde Hairdressing, has introduced a new treatment – NIOXIN – to give clients thicker, fuller-looking hair in 30 days.
The Tim Hyde salon are now offering KeraStraight – an award winning treatment that strengthens, eliminates frizz and straightens. At the same time, adding an ultimate gloss and shine to your hair lasting four months. Is your hair dull, dry, damaged, curly, wavy or frizzy? This could be the solution for you.
More than 50 per cent of people worldwide experience thinning hair. The NIOXIN approach began in 1987, when the founder experienced thinning hair after the birth of her first child and began to investigate the idea of treating the scalp with skincare methods.
• NEW: Cloud Nine irons From the original founder of GHD, Cloud Nine brings you the latest in hair straightening innovation. Each of the irons features intelligent temperature control technology to give you a sleek, shiny finish and kinder styling. The signature mineral infused ceramic plates will leave a healthy finish whilst the 360 degrees swivel cord allows ultimate hair freedom to create a range of styles. Now on sale in the Time Hyde salon.
Until then, people experiencing thin-looking hair had very few options for help. NIOXIN’s advanced technologies provide real solutions for making the most of the hair you have, transforming the hair care industry and bringing hope and confidence to both men and women.
• Technical Balayage Style director, Tim Hyde, is gaining experience in advanced Technical Balayage in Mayfair this month. Balayage is a hair colouring technique designed to create very natural-looking highlights that grow out without developing a noticeable and obvious root. This method of colouring emerged in Paris in the 1970s; the name is French for “to sweep,” a reference to the way in which the colour is applied.
“This isn’t just a treatment for people with hair loss and fine locks” salon owner, Tim, tells us. “The treatment is also for clients interested in scalp treatment – popular with those who want to improve the condition of their hair”. Making the most with the hair you have begins with a consultation. The fully-qualified stylists at Tim Hyde will be able to introduce you to the benefits of NIOXIN, talk through your needs and recommend a tailored solution.
When hair is coloured with the balayage process, the highlights are painted on by hand in a sweeping motion that moves from the base to the tip of the hair. At the base, the colour is applied very lightly, while at the tip, the colour is very heavy. The result is a chunky highlight that looks naturally sun-bleached, and as the hair grows out, the root will be concealed for the first few months by the thinner colour applied to the base of the hair. Coming soon to the Tim Hyde salon.
Tim Hyde Hairdressing will create a personalised NIOXIN plan for clients. Packages are available or products can be purchased individually. Price on consultation.

Adel Aesthetics Words: Jessica F ogart y
best laying back on the treatment bed to relax for an hour while the wrap gets to work – the perfect opportunity for clients to indulge in additional treatments like a facial or manicure. The wrap is then removed and the therapist takes your ‘after’ measurements to compare the results. Having never tried a body wrap previously, I had my doubts, but I was surprised to see I’d lost seven inches combined between my hips, stomach, arms and legs. My first thought was water loss – but it’s actually recommended that you drink water regularly after your treatment to enhance detoxification. You even get peace of mind knowing that the inch loss guarantee lasts for 30 days so you continue to benefit long after leaving the salon. To extend the inch loss effect, a course of three treatments is often enough for most women to lose a complete dress size. Wow.
Adel Aesthetics is a brand new showroom offering high end aesthetic equipment and treatments to the professional hair and beauty industry. Located in Sheffield, the state-of-the-art showroom opened its doors in summer 2014 adjoining the flagship Adel Professional store. It’s the tenth Adel Professional Store to open in the Yorkshire and Humber region. Adel Professional Sheffield has an adjoining training academy which runs beginner and advanced hair and beauty courses.
Lose six inches in less than two hours “The perfect quick fix for that special occasion”
If your clients want to lose a few inches fast, why not invest in Universal Contour Wrap. It may sound too good to be true, but the brand are so confident in what they do – they guarantee you’ll lose at least six inches in less than two hours or your money back. It’s the perfect quick fix for that special occasion. In the privacy of the treatment room you strip off your clothes and are supplied with some paper pants while your ‘before’ measurements are taken. While standing, the therapist then layers-up your body in what can only be described as hot bandages soaked in a wet brown paste. “It’s a unique blend of mineral rich clay” says Rose Welch, Showroom Manager. “The specialist body wrapping techniques help cleanse your body whilst actively compressing the soft fatty tissues to create instant inch loss.” The bandages are applied to the full body – from feet to neck and shoulders with specific focus on any ‘problem areas’. They’re tight to the body, which does make it hard to move around, so you’re

GILES COKE Chic meets Sheffield Wednesday soccer star, Giles Coke. Sheffield Wednesday Football Club’s community programme ran a series of soccer sessions this summer at Meadowhall Shopping Centre. The club often runs events for aspiring footballers with their community football coaches helping to improve children’s skills, as well as providing an opportunity for some fun. Chic speaks to SWFC’s midfielder, Giles Coke (28) to find out more… Why did you get involved with the SWFC community programme? I think it’s good for all the players to show their appreciation for the club and come and support the kids. It’s good to encourage them, especially while they’re off school. Do you often attend the community programme’s events? Yeah, I think it’s good that part of what we do is to help the community. As a team we come and support them about once a month.
Did you attend events like ‘Soccer School’ when you were younger? Yeah I attended something similar to this down in London. I went to soccer camps at QPR and managed to get a trial. What do these sessions usually involve? Usually it gives the kids a chance to meet us and have a connection. We sign some pictures and take some photographs, and then the coaches help them practice, show them some skills and play some fun games. It’s good to see the kids smiling and having fun. What would be your top tips for any budding footballers? I would say just show a good attitude, work hard and practice, practice, practice! Is there any trait in particular you would say makes a good footballer? Mainly attitude, you can have all the ability in the world, but if you’ve got a bad attitude it doesn’t really get you far in anything.
In the future can you see yourself as a coach or a manager? Yeah, I can see myself being a coach. I love football so I’d definitely like to stay in the game. It’s something I’d definitely consider. Who were your sporting inspirations when you first got into football? I looked up to Ian Wright when I was younger. I’m a big Arsenal fan, and he inspired me a lot. My brother [ Jon Coke] was an inspiration as well, he took time out to coach me. Check out the club’s website and social media sites for more opportunities in the community.

The Autumn Leaves October officially marks nature’s transition into autumn, and as evening temperatures drop and light levels lower, leaf colour intensifies, especially if day temperatures remain relatively warm. The russet reds, fiery oranges and golden yellow tones are a result of deciduous shrubs and trees ceasing production of a green pigment called chlorophyll that gives leaves their usual colour. Cooler days shouldn’t mean you spend less time outside at the weekend though, it’s time
to pull on a chunky woolen sweater and don the wellies. If you’re an avid gardener now is the time to clear debris from the garden and prepare it for the dormant months ahead but, if you’re not so green fingered, why not take a walk through an arboretum. Filled with wonders from around the world, an arboretum is a collection of trees planted for your viewing pleasure. Back at home, summer bedding plants are now looking past their best, so retire them to the compost heap and replace with fresh seasonal plants. I love to create themed planting schemes outside my back door and

this October is no exception. The standard Marguerite I planted in March has been exceptional, flowering throughout the entire summer, but now it’s time for a change. This autumn I’m planting up my containers with a standard lollipop holly tree (as a central feature), some Solanum (small green foliage with bright orange berries), a few Cyclamen and then I’m under planting the whole thing with a selection of evergreen grasses. As Christmas approaches I’ll replace the Cyclamen and Solanum with something more festive, but for now I’m embracing the wonderful rich colours of autumn.

Food review: Anchorage West One Plaza has seen an influx of new business in recent months, including the opening of Anchorage Bar and East Coast Kitchen – a contemporary venue serving-up modern dishes inspired from America’s east coast with a strong presence of seafood. Words: Jessica Fogarty
It’s a brand new concept for Sheffield. The kitchen cures deli meats on site for sharing platters and sandwiches in the downstairs bar whilst a live lobster tank, clams, and shrimp by the half pint are served from the 65 seat first floor restaurant. Anchorage is the third venue launched by The Rootstock Trading Company: a more grown-up sibling to The Harley on Glossop Road and the Wick at Both Ends on West Street. While these are both known for their informal dining and live music, the new addition boasts a more sophisticated vibe in a formal yet relaxed restaurant environment. Formally the home of 23 Bar and Restaurant, the venue has been fully refurbished now boasting an intimate seating area with orange leather circular booths and glazed walls overlooking the plaza. The whole place oozes class and the menu doesn’t disappoint either. You’ll be spoilt for choice. Appetizers include: fresh oysters, shrimp, crab cakes, squid, wings, ribs, soup or salad. I opted for the crispy squid served with a chipotle mayo and salad garnish while my dining partner ordered the shrimp – shell-on Tiger prawns and garlic butter. Both full of flavour. The portions aren’t overly generous – just the right amount to leave you satisfied yet still eager to await the arrival of your main course. Appetizer prices range from £3-£6. For main course, choose from a range of fish dishes and grills – cod, tuna, burgers, sandwiches, buttermilk chicken, meatballs and a plethora of steak cuts. I opted for pit beef – beef round with house rub, focaccia, mustard and spicy slaw. In comparison to the appetiser, the portion was huge with a good balance of flavours and textures. My dining partner opted for the hanger steak – a 10oz unusual cut. It has the most flavour of any steak but an unusual texture, served medium. This came accompanied with fries and slaw. Main course prices range from £8-34 (including sharers). If you want to know more about the menu, shout over the staff! The knowledgeable team have clearly taken the time to familiarise themselves with ingredients featured on the menu and are happy to give their recommendations. Offering just as much choice as the food menu, the drinks menu features a variety of wines, craft beers, cocktails and mocktails. And if you’ve room for dessert (we didn’t manage it), choose from pecan pie, waffles, New England cranberry duff, blueberry pie or baked cheesecake. There’s also a choice of after-dinner drinks from an East Coast iced tea and Aviation gin and tonic to a glass of Prosecco or Dirty Martini. Our bill came in just under £50 – a reasonable price given the style, service and quality on offer. It’s worth mentioning though, that diners can take advantage of discounted dining if visiting before 7pm – the express menu offers two-courses for £12 (on selected dishes) or three courses for £15. Plus on Sundays, enjoy an American style Sunday roast for under £12. A welcome new addition to Sheffield we’d say!

Trendy Transport Despite being common place in European cities such as Milan and Paris – with bikes renowned for easy manoeuvring and limited parking restrictions – the UK has been slow to commit to two wheels. But according to Via Moto owner Matthew Gilder times are changing. The Sheffield based Italian motorbike and moped business has relocated to larger premises close to the city centre following a surge in demand for the fashionable European mode of transport. Specialising in chic mopeds and stylish motorcycles, Via Moto has seen a steady increase in interest for bikes across the region since it was established in 2012, but a surge in sales over the past year has forced the business to move premises, taking on a new 2000sqft showroom in S3. “Mopeds and motorbikes are stylish, convenient and incredibly cost effective,” says Matthew. “We only stock top of the range Italian brands such as Vespa and Moto Guzzi, and the people who buy from us are buying into a lifestyle, as well as a investing in a mode of transport.” According to the latest figures revealed by The Motorcycle Industry Association, the number of scooters, mopeds and motorcycles registered in the UK increased 11 per cent from July 2013 to July 2014. And though sales are mostly London based, Matthew, who rides a motorbike himself, says the use of a two wheeled moped to nip through the busy streets of the capital has got the UK thinking – with sales for 2014 to date up over half a year at an increase of 33 per cent. He adds: “We sell Italian mopeds, motorbikes and quality accessories including brands such as Vespa, Aprilia, Moto Guzzi and Piaggio. People love the look, and they love having a choice on what mode of transport they commit to.” Despite also boasting a maintenance and service area at the back of the new showroom, owner Matthew said he is determined to ‘keep it clean’. “This is a friendly, clean showroom where people can come and ask one of our expert advisors anything about owning and maintaining a bike, as well as purchasing all the safety equipment – from helmets to leathers. You can even have a cup of Italian coffee while you talk! “Scooters offer a great alternative to commuters, but we also get a lot of people exploring the countryside on our bikes. With the Peak District surrounding us, exploring the stunning countryside on two wheels is the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon. “We are very excited to be able to bring an even bigger range of bikes, mopeds, scooters, and Italian clothes and accessories to the region. Our workshop facility has also doubled, meaning we can keep much loved bikes looking as chic as they can be. We warmly welcome bike enthusiasts and novices alike and hope people will enjoy our little Italy in Sheffield!” www.via-moto.co.uk 284 Shalesmoor, S3 8UL 0114 303 3000 - 52 -

The New Audi TT backing the winner or are you sticking with your Golf GTI?
By Alistair Hague, motoring expert at CLP Automotive, Sheffield.
What’s your take on the Audi TT? A brilliant new interpretation? An unusually attainable, good looking sports car? Or so commonplace it barely even registers?
Combining dials, phone, satnav, music and more, you can dance around from screen to screen, choosing exactly what you want to see and when. For example, if you want the largest possible mapping, the speedometer and rev counter shrink in size to accommodate. You’ll need a child to show you the intricacies of its operation, of course.
The original TT was something special. No car manufacturer had built such a bold interpretation of the coupe away from a motor show concept. And no one cared that beneath the curvaceous exterior, a Volkswagen Golf was hiding, albeit with four-wheel-drive. Style plus turbo-charged performance was enough to get buyers flocking to Audi dealers.
Has the driving prowess of a TT ever really mattered? If you really cared, you’d have bought a Boxster, but the new model acquits itself well. You pay extra for quattro four-wheel drive now, but much of the time the 2.0-litre turbo, with its 230bhp and front-wheel-drive, is quick and fun.
In 2006 a new TT smoothed out the lines of the original and offered more space. Now the third generation is about to launch, looking uncannily like the TT it’s replacing.
There’s also a 310bhp TTS version, which impressed on the private Ascari race track up in the mountains near Ronda, though the differences seem less marked on public roads. Despairingly, we also liked the diesel TT, mainly because it was the quietest and most relaxed to drive.
Take this phrases “automotive supercomputer meets state-of-the-art sports car”. What are we meant to take from that? The new TT looks much like the previous one, while mechanically it’s full of the best bits from Volkswagen’s bin of parts for its mid-sized cars.
All the launch TTs (there will be more to come in the next 18 months) have a “drive select” system that can be set to hone the suspension to your preference. Clever but not strictly necessary. Likely to be of greater appeal is the quick, paddle-shifting “S tronic” transmission and the standard leather + Alcantara seats.
Yet there is something special going on here. Much of the bodywork is aluminium for the first time. Combined with improved engine efficiency, the new TT is both faster and greener, though nowhere near green enough to avoid the congestion charge.
Yes, it’s all down to the visuals with cars like this. For despite Audi’s claims, the TT lacks hard-nosed sports car credentials. It drives like a top end VW, not a Porsche or even an MX-5. So eye appeal is everything. And the trouble is, hardly anyone in Spain took a second glance at the new Audi.
Then there’s the interior. This has been a TT strong point from the beginning, but this dashboard design is breath-takingly good. The five fresh-air vents, with the heating controls so neatly built into the central knobs, are a delight. And even better is the driver-centric thin-film transistor display.
Familiarity seems to breed indifference.

Tipple Tails Tipple Tails fruitcake has gone from a cottage kitchen to the shelves of Selfridges in under two years. Chic talks to baker Jane Stammers about how she has created a brand that is strong inside and out… There’s nothing better than sitting around a long-loved country kitchen table, sampling boozy cake, and in Jane Stammers’ kitchen that’s called product development. Over a cup of tea, I reach for a piece of fruitcake. Yet, in the back of my mind, there are haunting flashbacks of last year’s store bought cake playing out in the “never eat again” part of my brain. It’s a divisive thing – fruitcake. Who knew that a holiday pudding could polarize entire nations? There are websites where haters share horror stories of Auntie Suzie’s annual teeth-breaking attempt and there are also those who cannot imagine life without it. But there is nothing questionable about this Tipple Tails fruitcake. As the berries and nuts, mellowed by the Jamaican ginger liqueur, melt away in my mouth along with the fragrant cake, I begin to understand why this product, called Ginger Tingle, has just been awarded two golden stars by the Guild of Fine Food. “I get lots of people saying they don’t like fruitcake, but they really like mine. I guess it’s to do with that special ingredient - some bakers just have the touch,” she says and a humble smile appears upon her face. Tipple Tails – a Yorkshire phrase used to call a person, who would bend over backwards to do something, describes both Jane Stammers and her cake baking company to a tee. She has been running Tipple Tails for nearly two years, battling to rid fruitcake of its infamous reputation: “I wanted to make the best product I possibly could and I had a clear vision on how to do that. It had to be fun, light and inviting, without being pretentious.” And the fact that it has been so well received, both in Sheffield and elsewhere in the country, proves that the leap of faith Jane had taken to establish a wholesale company was rather well-measured. “I couldn’t sell something that I didn’t believe in and I set up the brand in such a way that it’s easy to sell my products. I have every confidence in them,” she explains as she eagerly shows me around the former bedroom of her son – now the official headquarters of Tipple Tails. Crammed full with boxes of cakes and packaging materials that are stacked high along the whitewashed walls, Jane quickly runs down her suppliers list: “I buy vine fruit from two Yorkshire wholesalers, the butter from Longley Farm in West Yorkshire and free-range eggs from Dunsford Bridge in South Yorkshire. The flour comes from a miller in Driffield, where the local farmers bring in their wheat harvest straight to the mill. I spent a long time on finding those suppliers because part of my ethos is to source everything as locally as
Words : M artina Danelaite
possible.” Yet not only championing local businesses but also doing so sustainably - is pivotal to the brand. Tipple Tails cakes come wrapped in biodegradable cellophane and packaged in tins that customers can reuse or recycle. Pointing at the white tins, Jane says: “Ironically, although we make steel in Yorkshire, there are no tin plate manufacturers in the area, so these are made in London. The only other option would be to buy them from China, but I definitely didn’t want to do that.” So meticulous is Jane’s eye for detail that she has even invested in a postal box that fits the cake tin perfectly, so there is no need for extra packaging material. “When you buy a Tipple Tails tin– all you are getting is cake. I wanted the experience to be holistic, from seeing it, to opening it, to smelling it, to eventually eating it,” says the expert of sussing out tins manufactured overseas. Jane’s appreciation of food developed in her childhood, when she was raised on an orchard in Surrey and she still remembers “these glistening bottles of preserved fruits and berries in the larder”. She then trained as a home economist and spent most of her career working for Zanussi as a marketer promoting oven ranges. “I moved to Sheffield ten years ago and worked on a project, teaching people how to take their homemade products to market. When the funding came to an end and I got made redundant, my husband just said – ‘you have been telling other people how to do it, so why don’t you do it yourself ? Everybody loves your fruitcake!’ ” So Jane mustered all the funds she could get her hands on and even invested family money to start up the business. Behind the petite frame and her kind face hides not only the strength of a mother, who has raised three children on her own, but also a marketing and branding powerhouse. The decades of entrepreneurial experience helped her not only craft a strong brand but also skip most of the common mistakes that new business owners make, such as failing to identify a USP or neglecting to create a cohesive brand. “A lot of people make cakes, so I needed mine to stand out. I looked at all my competitors and none of the cakes delivered on their promise. One cake had been chucked over next door’s fence by the courier and was upside down on the drive in a box much too large for the cake. Another one was wrapped in cling film and there was also a cake that was too large to fit into its tin, so it was rammed in and the lid was stuck down with tape. All of that made me spend a lot of time and money on packaging and presentation – I know how important it is.” The welcoming, dainty packaging has proved hugely successful, but is positively overshadowed by the extraordinary taste of the fruitcake. In fact, Jane has had a photographer come along to tastings to capture the moments of eye-closed bliss, the cheeky self-indulgent smile and eyebrow raised in both
- 56 -
delight and disbelief as people try her cake for the first time. With fruitcake so good, I’m convinced there must be a secret recipe and subtly inquire with Jane. She giggles and replies: “Instead of using sherry or brandy as is usual, I use English pudding liqueurs from a producer just 14 miles away in Barnsley. Also, normally a fruitcake recipe would instruct you to chop up your fruits and nuts so that you get a flat finish to marzipan. I’d rather have a slightly bumpy cake with lots of big, yummy chunks of whole fruits and nuts that people can bite into.” And this creative formula seems to work. Jane has steadily expanded her product range from the original Ginger Tingle to include two more lip-smacking flavours – Cherry Orchard and Cinnamon Pippin. Recently, she also started selling small slices of ‘unboozed’ cake adapted especially to the appetites of cyclists. Yet supplying thirty independent shops in the region has not always been smooth-saling. Jane admits she is no super-woman and hasn’t been able to pay herself a salary yet: “Cash-flow has always been a major problem. Also, it’s been really hard when I work seven long days a week, as I have been doing for pretty much the entire two years, and the to-do list doesn’t seem to be getting any shorter. In fact, it’s growing. I’ve
news
The Life of Jane Stammers ...
been doing it all by myself and I am starting to feel a bit ragged around the edges.” Cue Jane’s family whose boundless encouragement allows the baker’s optimism to shine through times when the ironing keeps piling up, the garden is overgrown and the dust settles on the cottage windows. Although the children have flown the nest, which gives her space to do “her own thing”, they have always been supportive and her husband has been invaluable: “Not only does he do the ironing, but he also keeps reminding me to ask the critical questions – how much profit am I making, how many units have I sold?” Jane says. “I’m not very good at that.” Despite the spreadsheet phobia, Jane has proven to everyone that through selfless, hard work and thoughtful business planning, she can produce a successful brand. A particularly emotional moment came when she pitched Tipple Tails to the “Feed the Dragon” panel at the Harrogate Speciality Food show, consisting of national and local food related businessmen: “I gave all the judges different flavours of cake and by the end of my pitch, they were all swapping with each other to try them all. I was overwhelmed because they absolutely loved it, Nigel Barden said it was his favourite product out of all pitched that day.” To Morgan Killick, Jane’s business mentor from
the very beginning, this comes as no surprise: “Not all businesses can grow as fast as this one, but Jane has a passion for what she does. When you couple that with her drive, you have a success story just waiting to happen. Now it’s all about scale – finding routes to growth without compromising the core values of the brand,” he says, “I’m sure she will do it.” Jane is on the cusp of something much bigger and if the fact that, after a nerve-racking yet successful business pitch, she has recently started selling her cakes at Selfridges in Birmingham is anything to go by, she has only scratched the surface of Britain’s appetite for high-quality fruitcake. “I absolutely love what I’ve managed to achieve in such a short space of time, but there is no point in doing it if you can’t earn a living. I don’t want to be baking cakes when I’m 70,” she chuckles, “unless that cake is for my family.” Jane is not disheartened, only critically aware of the fact that as she expands her production, she will need to let go of certain elements of her beloved business to sell a lot more cake: “Just because Tipple Tails will be getting bigger doesn’t mean I will lose the brand values, which are very important to me. I would never sacrifice the quality of my cake.”

Art in the Gardens “I would also like to thank all those who worked hard to make the event such a resounding success, particularly Sharon Gill who is now stepping down after curating Art in the Gardens for seven successful years.”
Words : Jessica Fogarty
Thousands flocked to Sheffield’s Botanical Gardens for this year’s Art in the Gardens event.
The Portraits of Distinction competition, in which members of the public paint a well-known Sheffield figure from a photograph, was this year won by 44-year-old Steve Goodison, from Mosborough.
The largest outdoor art show in the North, Art in the Gardens kicked off with a Preview Evening on Friday, September 5, complete with live music and an opening speech from Councillor Isobel Bowler, cabinet member for culture, sport and leisure at Sheffield City Council.
Mr Goodison, who works in the printing industry, also won the contest back in 2010, when the subject was BBC Radio Sheffield presenter Toby Foster.
Attracting more than 8,000 people, the event now in its eleventh year ran over Saturday, September 6 and Sunday 7, with particular highlights being a fairground-inspired exhibition in the Bear Pit; paintings on show in the spectacular Pavilion, and the Portraits of Distinction competition, which was judged on Sunday by “Pulp” drummer Nick Banks.
This year’s subject was drummer Nick Banks, who judged the competition on Sunday afternoon. Mr Goodison said: “The prizes of £100 and a hamper were fantastic, but it can’t be denied that the greatest prize of all is seeing your portrait being the one that is chosen.
Coun Bowler said: “As ever, this year’s Art in the Gardens was a fantastic event, bringing together art lovers, families, local people and those who simply wanted a fun day out in Sunday’s sunshine.
“I’ve been painting since childhood but really took it up again five or six years ago, when I began specialising in portraits.”
“I hope that the huge selection of art on show inspired people to perhaps pick up a paintbrush or a pencil, and express their own creativity.
Dates are still set to be confirmed for next year’s Art in the Gardens, which will again take place in the Botanical Gardens. Those who are interested in sponsorship opportunities around the event, or who have a general enquiry, should contact Howard Simpson by email on howard.simpson@sheffield.gov. uk.
“What is really special about Art in the Gardens is the fact that it gives amateur and first-time artists the chance to exhibit their work alongside much more famous names. I hope that those who exhibited for the first time this year will be back with us next year.

Arriba! Arriba! Sheffield’s El Paso restaurant and bar launches new lunchtime menu and donates profits to the Women of Steel statue appeal.
Cumberland Street’s El Paso Mexican & Italian Restaurant & Bar raised more than £750 towards the campaign for a statue in the city centre to mark the sacrifices made by thousands of South Yorkshire women who ran the region’s armament factories in World War Two. Guests included boxing legend Brendan Ingle, Sheffield City Council leader Julie Dore, author Neil Anderson and the four women fronting the Women of Steel campaign: Ruby Gascoigne, Kathleen Roberts, Dorothy Slingsby and Kit Sollitt. The event included a screening of a rare 1985 Women of Steel documentary and a raffle with prizes supplied by Sheffield-based Ballpark Film Distributors.
The Women of Steel with Sheffield City Council leader Julie Dore (second from left), El Paso’s Nasir Iqbal (middle) and Brendan Ingle (second from right)..
The restaurant chose the appeal because of the nearby Moor’s part in World War Two history. Much of The Moor was destroyed on December 12, 1940, the first night of the Sheffield Blitz. Atkinsons department store wasn’t rebuilt until 1960. El Paso’s Nasir Iqbal, centre, said: “It’s an honour to donate to such a worthy cause as the Women of Steel. The site of our building played a pivotal role in World War Two so raising money to remember the thousands of
South Yorkshire Women that played such an important role in the war is really important to us.” The donation has brought the appeal even closer towards the target of £150,000. El Paso is now open every dinnertime as well as seven nights a week. www.elpasorestaurant.co.uk Words: Jessica Fogarty

At what age did you discover Thai boxing? I was 13 years old. Why Thai boxing rather than just boxing? It wasn’t really a matter of this or that, my cousin did Thai boxing so I just got dragged into it. How long have you been training with Kiatphontip UK Muay Thai Leeds? Coming up five years would you believe? I feel old. Did you train elsewhere previously? Yes, under Craig Willis at Hanuman Thai boxing camp, Darlington When did you go professional? November 2011 against Dave Copestake - my first A Class fight. How often do you train and for how long each session? Thai boxing wise, five nights a week but sometimes I do more than just one session on the night - depending on each fight and opponent. What have been your most memorable fights to date? My first fight was against David – Pitbull – the boxing glove supplier to most shows these days, epic guy!
Congratulations on your win at Showdown Sheffield 8 man tournament. Did you expect to win the title? Thank you, I hate to be big headed and i don’t want to come over confident but yes we had trained for every different opponent who was in the tournament. It had to be mine, training was gruelling but it paid off handsomely. How was the experience? Unbelievable, I would do it all again. I loved every second of it! Which fight was most challenging for you? The final fight with Tommi! His awkwardness and unorthodox style was frustrating but a quick chat between rounds with my team in the corner changed things for me! - 21 -
How will you be spending your 5K prize money? My mum took it off me for Thailand which I’m happy about and grateful. I’m going out there to celebrate New Year’s Eve and hopefully to spend some time in the ring while I’m there. It still hasn’t kicked in that I’ve won! I guess when you get that much money you just don’t know what to do, well I didn’t. Do you take time out to rest or are you straight back in the ring training? Depending on my scheduled fights I normally do rest for two to three days but if I have a break for a while and it’s the summer, I visit my brother in Ibiza for a week or so. Tell us about your nickname, Peter Andre? Ha, that’s funny to be honest, i don’t know how it came about. I guess when I was training my hair just fell into curtains and then here we are today dancing and singing along to Mysterious Girl as I’m about to enter the ring to face an opponent who’s ready to kill me, well do his best.
What advice would you give to any budding boxers hoping to get to your level? Be patient and stay dedicated. it’s took me a while to get where i am today and i still haven’t got where I want to be but I know with hard work and trusting my team and sponsors, eventually I’ll raise the WBC world title then I will be truly happy or maybe even a stadium title in Thailand. We can only dream! Are there any fighters you’d like to take on in the ring that you haven’t yet? It’s a sport and that’s how I see it. I will fight anyone who comes in front of me and be their pals after the fight in the ring. You are there to win not be friends and play tiddly winks. I’m there to win and with my team I have full confidence in myself and the people who look after me that I will do my best to feel my hand raised in the air after a fight. However, I have already fought this guy – Salah – and he cut me so I do want a rematch. If any promoter wants to get it sorted – get in touch with Maria or Simon Chu or Jompop Kiatphontip! I would like to say a quick thank you to all my sponsorships - Emperor Fight Gear, Trayvale Travels, LRstrength, The Movement Doctor and Wellocks – thank you for the support and Kiatphontip UK, thank you for changing my life and being there every second of the day! Big love, The Stanton Team.

howdown 2014 returned to Sheffield in September for another sell-out show. Featuring an eight man tournament under full Thai rules, we saw some of the best boxers from around the world come head to head fighting for the £10k prize money. Imran Khan (Bad Company), Simone Delvecchio (Italy), Bradley Stanton (Kiathonip), Thomas McCormick (Bodyflo), Nelson Gomez (Portugal), Ben Lucas (Superpetch), Luca Donadio (Italy), and Andrew Lofthouse (Evolve) took to the ring in three, threeminute quarter-final rounds in an attempt to get one step closer to the prize money. After four intense rounds, the winning fighters returned to the ring for the semi-final rounds; but it was two of Yorkshire’s finest that came out top – Bradley Stanton from Leeds and Thomas McCormick from Sheffield. Spectators were on the edge of their seats as they watched the final three rounds, but a unanimous decision from the judges meant that Brad took the title and left the ring with a cheque for £5k.

Promoter Hussain Shaffique said: “There was a lot of talent in the ring but I think I speak for everyone when I say Brad’s win was well deserved. “This was by far the best show to date – every year just gets better and better.
“I’d like to thank all of the fighters, sponsors and everyone involved in making the night such a success, and we look forward to welcoming you back to the next show – more details coming soon!” The event also featured title - 19 -

TASTE.
Words: Jessica Fogarty
With more than 40 new meals, sides and accompaniments to choose from, the new M&S taste collection features authentic flavours from Mexico, Thailand, Vietnam and Japan. The developers have immersed themselves in the newest regions, most exotic flavours and exciting cuisines to deliver an inspirational range this autumn. The Chic food critics picked up a selection of dishes when the Taste collection launched in the M&S Meadowhall store…
TASTE JAPAN... Subtle and light, Japanese food is gentler on the palate than some other Asian cuisine. Always full of flavour, it has a signature freshness, elegance and style, with star ingredients such as miso, mirin and soy. Traditional Japanese cooking tends to mean marinating, grilling and flame-searing to give meat and fish a great depth of flavour. The characteristic smoky sweetness is enhanced by intense sauces that can pack a real punch. We recommend the prawn and mangetout gyozas with ponzu dip and the yaktori chicken skewers (£7.25) under 250 calories per person and less than 5g fat. Our verdict: The smaller side plates are perfect for sharing - light yet intense in flavour.
TASTE THAILAND... Get your taste buds tingling with the vibrant aromatic Taste Thai collection. There’s a warmth at the heart of Thai cooking by combining complex flavours such as milk, lemongrass and fresh lime. Love curries? We recommend you try the Green Thai curry, jasmine rice and side of chicken satay skewers with a peanut and chilli dip (£10). For best results, microwave in under ten minutes or bake in the oven for 20 minutes. Serving a plentiful portion for two people, each dish is nutritionally balanced – low in sugar with under 700 cals per person and 25g fat. Our verdict: Not for the faint hearted, the dishes are spicy but the heat doesn’t overpower the flavour.
TASTE MEXICO... Packed full of flavour, easy to make and delicious to taste, Mexican food has become deservedly popular of late. From mild to spicy and with textures as creamy or crunchy as you desire, this is the perfect food for sharing. The key is layering flavours to create your own mouth-watering feast: from earthy sweetcorn, the meatiness of beans and the warmth of chilli salsa to the zing of fresh lime. For the perfect finish, you’ll want to top off your Mexican treats with a generous serving of fresh avocado, sliced crisp lettuce and a big spoonful of sour cream. We recommend the pulled pork, black bean and chipotle taco (£3.50) under 300 cals and 10g fat – perfect for a lunch for one. Our verdict: Our favourite from the Taste collection – the Mexican dishes have the perfect balance of flavour and heat.
TASTE VIETNAM... Often billed as a foodie’s destination, Vietnam is home to a vibrant street food scene and the thrilling sight of people cooking and eating on most corners. This cuisine delights in exciting flavours and textures. Mostly driven by the use of fresh herbs, which add the perfect snap and crunch to each mouthful, Vietnamese cooking is both hearty and delicate at the same time. Typically, this is a less spicy approach to cooking than Thai, with chilli used to add flavour and warmth to dipping sauces. We recommend the chargrilled calamari and king prawns in a lime, chilli and ginger dressing (£4.50). Best served stir fried, the dish is ready to eat in just three minutes. Our verdict: A perfect dish for those who prefer mild spice. The meal for one is also great for those calorie counting, containing 110 cals and less than 1g fat.

Bangla Cottage Located in the heart of Hillsborough, Bangla Cottage serves-up a vast range of traditional Bangladeshi and Indian dishes to dine-in or take-away. The talented team of chefs are trained in the original ‘home style’ methods and prepare a wide variety of dishes found throughout all corners of the Indian sub-continent. We were given a warm welcome from the moment we walked through the door. Our drinks order was taken then poppadum’s and a pickle tray (£2.50 2 persons) arrived to tempt our taste buds while we browsed the menu. As well as traditional pickles including mango chutney and diced onion, there were also some vibrant coloured sauces which were a favourite at our table. The waiter informed us these were the chef’s own secret creations – ‘red sauce’ and ‘green sauce’. Although uncertain of the ingredients, we recommend you give them a try. For starters, we choose the vegetarian platter to share (£5.95) – a sizzling plate of onion bhaji, vegetable samosa, paneer tikka and pakora – the perfect selection for those who can’t decide which dish to choose. Meat varieties are also available including the mixed platter (£6.95) and tandoori platter (£7.95). For main course, we took the waiter’s recommendation and ordered the Monchorian chicken with pilau rice (£8.40) and ‘The Bangla Mix Special’ (£7.85).
Bangla Cottage 481 Langsett Road Hillsborough Sheffield, S6 2LN Words: Jessica Fogarty
The Monchorian chicken, a chef’s special, was a plentiful dish of chicken fillets cooked in a subtle blend of mango and masala spices then skimmed in cream. For those new to Asian style dining this is a dish the staff recommend. Its light and flavoursome without too much cream. The Bangla Mix consists of a selection of tandoori chicken, seekh kebab, tandoori king prawn, chicken and lamb tikka. Each meat dish is grilled to sear in the unique aromatic spices and barbequed in a clay oven, served with a fresh green salad on a hot sizzling platter. There’s also a choice of set meals (£22.50 2 persons / £45 4 persons) or an early bird menu (£8.95 per head) for a two-course meal available Tuesday and Wednesday from 5.30pm and 7.30pm. If you’d prefer to enjoy your food in the comfort of your home – take advantage of free delivery within a three mile radius (minimum order £14 within S5/S6/S10/S35) and £1 delivery to surrounding areas. A corporate discount is also available – including NHS discount – ask staff to find out more. Cutler’s Spice MEET THE CHEF
Name: Noim Ullah Age: 76 Role: Head chef Chic meets the face behind the food at Sheffield’s premier Bangladeshi restaurant, Cutler’s Spice. What inspired you to be a chef? My brother – he was a chef in London for many years – he taught me to cook. How did your career start? I always wanted to open my own restaurant. I started out as a kitchen porter in 1963 then worked my way up to sous chef and eventually head chef. Why did you bring your cooking to Sheffield? Cutler’s Spice is a family run restaurant – my son manages the restaurant and my wife and I manage the kitchen. We previously had a takeaway in Sheffield and restaurants in other cities but we wanted to concentrate on one business working together as a family. There was a gap in the market for an independent restaurant in Sheffield so we launched here three years ago
with all hands on deck to make the business a success. Why do you think Indian cooking is so popular in the UK? People love the combination of spices. It’s the spices that give Indian cooking flavour and depth. Do you have a personal favourite dish on the menu? Tikka Masala. It’s a customer favourite too. We try to constantly change the menu to introduce new innovative dishes but we always listen to customer feedback and keep the favourites on the menu. I designed the menu 30 years ago and a lot of the classic dishes still remain on today’s menu. What’s the most difficult dish to make? Chicken handi – this dish features a lot of varieties of whole spices – not powdered, so it’s challenging and time consuming. What’s your favourite spice to work with? It has to be coriander.
- 11 -
Have you had any celebrity customers at Cutler’s Spice? Yes – we’ve had quite a few high profile names in the restaurant. ‘The Beast’ from ITV’s The Chase has dined here, as well as boxer Ricky Hatton and a number of football club managers. How would you describe Cutler’s Spice in three words? Luxurious, classy and atmospheric. How would you describe a typical day in the kitchen? Hectic. I work seven days a week from 11am until midnight most days. We can serve up to 130 diners in one night at the weekend. What’s your biggest achievement? I was awarded the Curry Life Magazine ‘Chef of the Year’ award in 2012 and my wife, Asharfun Nessa Begun, won the following year. This year we have been nominated for the ‘Spice Restaurant of the Year’ award. Words: Jessica Fogarty
