R ix ton Manchester four-piece, Rixton, shot straight to the top of the UK singles chart with their debut single ‘Me & My Broken Heart’. The catchy pop single beat off stiff competition from Ariana Grande, will.i.am and Nicole Sherzinger to claim the number one spot, with video views topping a whopping 14 million. The four piece band have just flown to the United States – where they have already achieved huge success – to embark on their first-ever North American headline tour. However British fans have no need to fear, as the band have announced their biggest UK headline tour, taking them to 13 cities this autumn, including a stop off at Sheffield’s O2 Academy on November 2nd. Chic meets Charley, one quarter of British boy band, Rixton… Words: Jessica Fogarty

How would you describe Rixton in three words? Soulful, energetic pop. How did the band form? Jake and Danny had been friends for about five years - they lived in a caravan together and were doing covers, but they wanted to start writing their own music as a band. The search began for more members and that’s when I came along. I was introduced through mutual friends. I’d been in a band for ten years but I was ready to move on to something new. How Lewi came along is an interesting story – I think you’ll like this one. Basically, he was naughtily messaging Jake’s girlfriend but after Jake initially being mad at him, we saw that he played drums and was really talented so we made him the final member of the band. The girl is not around anymore, obviously. What have been the most memorable moments for Rixton? Hitting the number one spot with our debut single, definitely! We’ve just made the finishing touches to our album, which is out in October, and we’re out touring in the US at the moment before we return to the UK to tour. We’ve not been home since Christmas. It’s been a crazy year and we’re only half way through. We’re excited to welcome you to Sheffield O2 Academy. Have you been to the city before? Yes, we’ve been on a Sheffield radio show but we’ve never actually been out in the city. I’ve heard about a place called The Leadmill that sounds a good night. Do you get compared to other artistes? Our sound is compared to Bruno Mars, Maroon Five and One Republic but we have a different image to those guys. We take all of those as compliments. Who would you like to collaborate with? Drake would be Jake’s dream collaboration, but personally I’d love to team up with Jared Leto - he’d sound insane on one of our tracks. You cracked America before the UK. That was a brave move. Yeah we never planned it that way. Our songs were getting played out there then the next thing we knew, we’d sold out shows in Los Angeles and New York City. - 10 -

@RixtonOfficial

You co-wrote some music with Ed Sheeran. How was that? Ed works closely with our producer, Benny [Blanco] – that’s how it came about. Ed heard our music and told Benny he’d like to write for us. We were very excited about it and the song, ‘Hotel Ceiling’, fits perfectly with our album. We’ve actually become really good friends now. He’s an unbelievably talented guy. Jake’s parents are well-known faces – EastEnders actor Shane Richie and former The Nolan’s singer Colleen Nolan. Have they offered you any words of advice? Coleen has yes. She’s always telling us to give our fans our time. We always try to stay and chat with fans wherever we go now as we really appreciate their support. We actually lived at Coleen’s house for two years in our early stages. She makes a cracking cup of tea.

“My first time at Owlerton, first time Greyhound racing. I had a brilliant night, loads of fun!”

Owlerton Stadium

I

f I was to say there was a venue in Sheffield that offered something for literally everyone you would probably think I was lying. Maybe you’re a tired parent who is looking for something a little different for the kids or you’re a student bored with the same old night-life – Owlerton Stadium has everything you need. Just a stone’s throw from Sheffield city centre, Owlerton offers people of all ages the chance to watch live greyhound racing- an exhilarating and unique experience. Greyhound racing has become one of the most exciting spectator sports in the UK and a night at Yorkshire’s premier racetrack will not disappoint. It has grown in popularity recently because it not only offers a thrilling racing experience, but also gives you the chance to have a memorable evening with your company of choice. With exciting events on three nights a week – Tuesday, Friday and Saturday – everyone can come along and try their hand at something completely different. Even if you’re a racing novice, the staff at Owlerton are there to help and you’ll soon be sucked into the infectious, buzzing atmosphere and by the end of the night you’ll be hooked and planning your next visit. A night at Owlerton gives you the chance to not only try your hand at betting on the dogs, but it also offers a high-class dining experience. In the recently refurbished restaurant Panorama, you will have the best seats in the house, but you will also be wined and dined by the very attentive waiting staff. Also, don’t worry about missing out on any wins as each table is given it’s very own tote betting runner, so you really do get the best of both worlds. Unlike most restaurants nowadays, you can actually take your time and have an enjoyable and relaxed evening at Owlerton. Tables can be reserved for the entire night so you can go at your own pace without feeling like you should probably head off…

Owlerton offers some great packages for a variety of needs and they don’t just offer Greyhound Racing, the event’s calendar also features a number of Sheffield Eagles rugby matches and Tribute Nights in select Christmas packages, so there really is something for everyone. Entry, food and drink packages start at just £4 per person or £17 per person for a three course meal (including entry and racecard), it really depends on what you are looking for – whether it’s just a casual night out with friends, or a venue for a company event. One thing that is certain is you’ll have a great time and you’ll want to come back!

“This is one of the best nights out I can recommend.”

Simon Stead

Words: Jessica F ogarty

Chic meets Sheffield Pro Speedway rider, Simon Stead. When did you first discover an interest in speedway? I grew up with the sport. My Granddad, Eric Stead, was a promoter so as a child I spent my Saturday nights walking around the track with a tin can attached to my foot pretending to be a speedway rider. My Granddad died when I was still young so I didn’t go to speedway for a while, but I’d had bikes at home since I was three years old and I found my passion again on a school trip to the grasstrack a few years later – it’s basically speedway but in a field. It was a great introduction to the sport – the disciples of a left turn are the same. For those unfamiliar with the sport, how would you summarise speedway? Speedway bikes have no brakes or no gears to assist you – it’s the opposite of everything you get taught to do with a car or standard bike. Even the most able motorcyclists can’t get used to it. When did you go professional? On my sixteenth birthday I signed my first professional contract for Peterborough. Their Youth Development programme was probably the best in the county at the time. I did two seasons for Peterborough then I signed for my hometown aged 17. I was with Sheffield for four years before moving to different clubs then I joined the elite league which is the higher division. Ten years on I’m back riding for Sheffield. How would you describe a typical week? Hectic. Between March and September I have an average of 15 meetings per month. Riding – prepping bikes – travelling – riding – prepping bikes – travelling. It’s busy but it’s great fun – I get paid for doing what I love. There are highs and lows, ups and downs like in any sport. It’s all good when things are going well – everyone loves you and you have the fans on your side but it’s not as easy if things don’t go to plan. Luckily, I’ve been at one end of the scale and the other. People say it’s a confidence game and it is – the more you ride, the easier it is. If you have a bad meeting you don’t have time to dwell on it – you’re straight back in the workshop trying to rectify the faults you think you have made then you have a fresh start that evening or the next night – no time to rest or worry. Have you suffered any serious injuries with speedway? With any extreme sport it’s a hazard of the job. You know what you’re getting in to and I’ve had my fair share. I’ve broke one collar bone twice, the other once, my shoulder, hands, knuckles,

arms, pins and plates in my legs, my heel, foot, back – the list of snaps and breaks in endless but it’s just one of those things. I’ve been doing it 17 years now and a lot of people have come off worse than me. The fact that you have to spend some time on the side lines is frustrating – you just want to get back on your bike. Tell us about your most recent successes, including riding for Team GB? It’s been a pretty awesome whirlwind year. In all honesty, I probably thought that ship had sailed for me after coming off my bike and breaking my leg last year, but I worked hard at the gym and on my bikes and set myself a realistic goal of making it in to the top ten. England have got some young stars coming through and only four riders could be chosen. As it got closer to selection, I was in good form and riding well. I got a call from the England manager, Alun Rossiter, who said “you’re right in the mix, just keep doing what you’re doing”. That was all the inspiration I needed. I - 14 -

then finally got the phone call I’d been waiting for; Alun said he was going with his gut feeling and I was in. I believed I could do the job for him so I said yes. If I had any doubts I would have honestly told him to go with someone else. Riding for my country was unbelievable. Event one took place at the track at Kings Lynn – the same track where I broke my leg – but my form this year was really good. We weren’t the favourites to win but we had a bit of luck on the day. We were riding against Australia, America and Italy. Australia were by far the favourites – they have two of the top three riders in the world – and America have number two. I got us off to a good start beating the current number two and three to take the lead – it was a great day. Everybody performed well but we were obviously lead by current world champion Tai Woffinden, he’s a great asset to Team GB. We won and went direct to the final. We finished fourth in the world – that was a massive

“Riding for my country was unbelievable”

“As a child I spent my Saturday nights walking around the track with a tin can attached to my foot” achievement for us. Obviously it would have been amazing to come away with a medal but England hasn’t achieved fourth place success in four years. Last year we came seventh so we’re proud of our performance this year. What’s next for you? Well that’s one goal ticked off early in the season. Now, I just want to finish the season strong. On a personal level, riding for Sheffield is going strong. Team-wise, it’s been a struggle as we’ve had a lot of injuries which have disjointed the season a little bit. Words: Jessica Fogarty At the back end of September it’s the Premier League Riders final. It would be amazing to sign off the season as a Premier League Rider Champion. It’s a big ask but it’s at my home track in Sheffield so I just need to keep doing what I’m doing. What advice would you give to budding speedway stars? Be prepared to sacrifice a lot. It’s not easy and there are pros and cons. While your mates are out enjoying themselves you’re prepping bikes, going to meetings and travelling. You have to be prepared to spend a lot of time on the road and you’ll miss your friends and family. But if you’re willing to put work in at the gym and the track then you’ll reap the rewards. Start by visiting Owlerton Stadium! - 15 -

Tramlines 2014 Words : Joss Woodend

Tramlines Festival returned to Sheffield with a bang this year. With Katy B, Public Enemy, Sister Sledge and The Cribs headlining, we all knew it would be successful. Yet it exceeded all expectations and provided to be the biggest festival we’ve ever seen in the city. Tens of thousands of people watched over 500 acts perform between Friday 25th and Sunday 27th of July. Katy B, playing the Friday night, set the bar high for the rest of the festival. Performing with a team of backing dancers and her DJ Shakira Kalité, Katy B played a hit-filled and energetic set, showing the audience just how fun Tramlines Festival was going to be. As if it couldn’t get any better, Public Enemy played an incredible set to a packed 8,000 strong Devonshire Green late Saturday afternoon. The burning heat did nothing to stop these hip-hop legends playing all their hits and putting on a once-in-a-lifetime show. In the evening, Annie Mac played an absolutely packed O2 Academy with DJ’s DMK, Shift K3Y, Monki and Mele ft Slick Don. Stand out performance of the night has to go to Shift K3Y, new DJ on the block, whose set was full of bass, hits and fun. With his recent single ‘Touch’ hitting 3rd in the UK Top 40 Chart, Shift K3Y is sure to be back at Tramlines as a headliner in the near future. Local music certainly didn’t fail to deliver over the weekend either. Sheffield-born Toddla T wowed crowds on the Friday evening, warming up for Katy B at the Main Stage. Playing all his best tracks and asking the crowd to wave anything they had in the air, he showed everyone just how talented the city of Sheffield is. Toddla T wasn’t the only local to impress. Sheffield lads Polkadodge stormed all of their performances at The Leadmill, Maida Vale and the Frog and Parrot on the Saturday, gaining tons of new followers. Tramlines further highlighted them as a band to watch out for. This year’s Tramlines Festival will be incredibly hard to beat next year. The weekend was full of incredible acts, beautiful people and, most importantly of all, lots of fun. Tramlines 2015 – we’re waiting for you!

Tom Hickox Words: Jessica Fogarty

Following the release of his debut album – War, Peace and Diplomacy – Chic meets London-born singersongwriter, Tom Hickox. It’s rare to come across an artiste that functions on honesty and rarer still to encounter one that is honest about themselves. Dressed in a three piece suit, he echoes both a twenties formality and a sixties dapperness. His late father was Grammy award winning conductor Richard Hickox, while his mother was an orchestral timpanist – is there any wonder he’s such a musical craftsman? The music and the words you hear on his album have all been crafted by the man himself, but he is happy to acknowledge the part played by producer Colin Elliot during the recording sessions at Yellow Arch Studios in Sheffield. We find out more…

- 18 -

When did you first discover an interest in music? In my early teens is when I first started writing music.

I don’t like to give away too much. I like people to interpret it in their own way. But I’d say the album doesn’t plough into this subject matter, it tells the tale behind the issues.

What was the response to your debut album? I was thrilled that the album was received so positively. I’m humbled.

What is your favourite track on the album? Asking me to choose my favourite track is like asking a parent to choose their favourite child. I will say though, that the final couple of minutes of ‘Normal Boy’ is pretty epic.

The album title is deep – War, Peace and Diplomacy. Tell us more?

You’ve been likened to some pretty big industry names; does that put any pressure on you? No, but it’s very flattering. I just try to write songs that I believe in. Who are your musical influences? Influence is a strange thing to judge, because everything in an artiste’s life is to some extent a contributory factor to the art they present, consciously, unconsciously, willingly, unwillingly. What’s the best gig you’ve ever played? Somerset House was probably my most memorable gig. I was supporting Richard Hawley. He was a dream to work with – he is a very kind man.

You’ve recorded sessions at Sheffield’s Yellow Arch Studios – how was this experience? Great. I’d never spent much time in Sheffield previously. The city has great character and kindred spirits. I work with what I like to describe as ‘proper musicians’ who do what they do because they love it and give it their heart and soul. Colin Elliot, producer and founder of Yellow Arch Studios is one of those people and he introduced me to Richard Hawley who featured on my debut single, Out of the Warzone. It was a pleasure and honour to work with them both. Yellow Arch Studios is a very special place to work too. It has a great vibe. Are there any artistes you’d like to collaborate with, who you haven’t yet? There are too many to name - PJ Harvey, Jack White, Randy Newman, Tom Waits, Dan Auerbach, Matthew E White, Jonny Greenwood, Nick Cave, Warren Ellis are just a few. Did your parents’ musical backgrounds influence your music? Songwriting came natural to me; as routine as eating and sleeping. Music has always been in my bones. I believe that every note of music that passes through you influences you to some degree. What’s next for you? I’ve had a busy summer playing festivals but I’ll be back touring this autumn. Hopefully Sheffield will be a stop off on my tour.

Icons Bars & Clubs brings you Sheffield’s Premium LGBT+ venue. The aim is to provide a safe comfortable environment for the LGBT+ community of Sheffield to either enjoy a few afternoon drinks, play pool, or dance the night away! Icons can be found located on West Street in the heart of the Sheffield nightlife! With two large rooms playing anything from chart and 80’s anthems to indie, rock and alternative hits, providing a variety of nights to cater for all! Coining the term ‘Straight Friendly’ Icons strives to be fully inclusive. Everyone is welcomed! An increase of footfall through the door every week and many returning customers demonstrates the popularity of the venue. Icons sprung onto the Sheffield gay scene on 21st September 2013. With what can only be described as an amazing grand opening it was welcomed onto the scene with open arms. The fantastic comments received complementing the decor, pleasantness of the staff, and quality of drinks, made the labours of love required to open in time more than worthwhile! Icons is the brainchild of Daniel Richardson (Managing Director). The idea came from a conversation with his previous employer regarding the gay scene (or rather lack of) within Sheffield. Once the idea was formed, and the business plan laid out Daniel set about the task of employing staff. His first port of call was two close friends, Kyle and Nik. With tremendous effort of the three friends

combined, it was only a matter of weeks before the drinks range was decided, the staff were employed and the bar was decorated. Icons really spoils you for choice when it comes to the drinks selection. With over 70 different spirits to choose from (including a superpremium range) you are certain to find a drink that really tickles your fancy! Icons also boasts Sheffield’s largest vodka selection with over 40 to take your pick from! Catering for all wallets, Icons provides ‘Happy Hours’ 4pm until 7pm Monday through to Saturday, daily cocktail offers and discounted drinks on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. So next time you find yourself in Sheffield why not pop along to Icons for a tipple of your favourite beverage along with a friendly comfortable atmosphere. You’ll be welcomed with open arms! dracula untold

Released 26th september

Released 26th september

Released 3rd october

Denzil Washington comes out of retirement to kick some Russian gangster backside, as the former Black Ops Commando, Robert McCall. McCall, who faked his own death to seek a quieter life away from the high-action drama that comes with such a role, jumps back into the job in an attempt to rescue a young girl by the name of Teri (Chloe Grace Moretz). The film, which is an adaptation of a popular 80’s TV series of the same name, is sure to deliver big on the shoot-em-ups and explosions in what will be an intense, action-packed thriller.

The life and times of the late, great James Brown is finally getting the big screen treatment by The Help’s Tate Taylor. A true rags to riches tale, the Godfather of Soul’s lifestory seems a perfect fit for film. Relative newcomer Chadwick Boseman has been given the leading role in a movie that also stars Oscar winner Octavia Spencer and Ghostbusters’ Dan Aykroyd. Expect plenty of ups and downs along with many of Brown’s biggest hits to be belted out in what could prove to be a true musical epic.

Dracula’s returns to the big screen, with The Hobbit’s Luke Evans taking on the famous role. This will be the first solo Dracula movie since the 2000 Gerard Butler starring flop, Dracula 2001, and will focus on the life of the man who became the blood drinking legend, Vlad Tepes. This dark, mysterious origin story also stars Les Miserable’s Samantha Barks and Fleming star Dominic Cooper in a film that looks to go deeper than just a man biting people’s necks.

Gillian Flynn’s best selling novel, Gone Girl, has been adapted to the big screen by Se7en director David Fincher. The thriller, which stars new Batman Ben Affleck and Jack Reacher’s Rosamund Pike as the married couple Nick and Amy Dunne, is an intense, frenzied affair that will leave you gripped from beginning until end. The story follows the disappearance of Amy, who goes missing on her wedding anniversary, and as clues begin to come to light, questions start to be asked of her husband. Not all is what it seems in a movie full of twist and turns.

The first book of James Dasner’s young-adult series to be turned into a film, The Maze Runner, follows the story of a group of young lads as they look to escape the giant maze infested with deadly creatures that surrounds their closed-off community. Starring Dylan O’Brien as leading man Thomas, and rising British star Will Poulter, there is hope this can be turned into the next big tween film franchise to follow in the footsteps of The Hunger Games and Divergent.

Produced by Transformers supremo Michael Bay, expect a lot of crash, bang and plenty of wallop in the latest film adaptation of the hit TV series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Directed by Wrath of the Titans’ Jonathan Liebesman and starring Megan Fox and funny man Will Arnett, the film follows the four mutant warriors, Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo, as they fight to save Manhattan from an evil kingpin.

90s Normal V Modern Victorian

There are so many trends to appreciate and try out this season- for him and for herbut there are two particular looks we can all enjoy; the clean and minimal 90s Normal and the opulent Modern Victorian.

Modern Victorian

AW14 Trend Report with Bethanie Lunn, Meadowhall’s Fashion and Beauty Adviser.

I

love this style and it’s a great transitional look as you’ll both be able to use clothing from your summer wardrobe and mix it up with new autumnal pieces. Opulent lace dresses or summer sheer lace dresses can be made to look modern and casual with check jackets, in fact checks are big news for both men and women. Try Pretty Green and Reiss for some cool jackets and shirts for him. Faux fur is going to be back with a vengeance so girls can carry faux fur bags or wear a faux fur tippet adorned with diamanté brooches, while guys can stay warm in wool coats with faux fur collars. Lace up boots with block heels

are key for him and her and a key staple that you may end up sharing is the velvet blazer. Men can throw it on over jeans and add colour pops by matching a bold top with their handkerchief in the pocket or even their socks as they peep out from beneath their trousers. Next and New Look have some really affordable styles or splash out at Ted Baker or Tessuti. For women, introduce the reds, hot pinks, forest greens and plums of AW14 with opaque tights and floor length dresses, lace inserts or shirts with embellished Peter Pan collars. This is your chance to go all-out glam so look out for lavish necklaces and chandelier earrings. Topshop has a fantastic selection.

90s Normal 90s normal focuses on the simple lines and colours of the 90s using a very neutral palette of white, nude, black, grey, ivory and dusky pink. For women, tailored culottes are back in vogue worn with sheer shirts or peg trousers if you prefer. Pea coats are great for both men and women and guys look great in the 90s grunge look of ripped jeans and a simple white t-shirt. Keep accessories to a minimum and enjoy the simplicity. Topman, All Saints, Hollister and Henri Lloyd master the look for men while Bank Fashion, Lipsy and Topshop get it bang on for women.

The next Pop-UpShop event will run from Thursday 2nd – Sunday 5th October.

Exchange Place PopUp-Shop

Exchange Place Studios opened its doors to the public for one weekend only in August. Visitors had the opportunity to pop-in and browse, chat, touch, stroke and buy the items for sale made by a selection of Exchange Place Studio artists. The Sheffield based building is the latest addition to Yorkshire Artspace’s expanding number of studio sites. Natasha Lyons, founder of Sheffield jewellery brand, Tarr & Fether, whose studio is located within Exchange Place said: “The aim of the event was to showcase what the artists in the building have to offer. “There is so much talent in here but the public don’t often get to meet the faces behind the brands. “The building is open by invitation only so the pop-up-shops are the only time you’ll get through the doors.” Creatives showcasing their work at the PopUp-Shop event included: Henk Littlewood Furniture; Cari+Cari sculptural knitwear; Debbie Carlisle bridal accessories; Richard Priestly jewellery; Psalt Design; Sophie Cooke hand-made fascinators; Mellor Ware by Lianne Mellor; Charlie Downes and Bunn Illustrations.

TARR & FETHER Tarr & Fether is a UK based jewellery company founded in 2013 by fashion stylist Natasha Lyons. After working with clients in the music and celebrity industry for 14 years she realised there was a hole in the fashion market for beautifully crafted pieces which were effortlessly timeless and after 12 months of research and buying overseas, Tarr & Fether was born. Everything is proudly produced in Sheffield, from the 9ct gold pieces, the presentation box and pouches to the logo and printing. tarrandfether. co.uk

MELLOR WARE Mellor Ware is designed by Lianne Mellor in her Sheffield based studio. She strives to produce products that are not only beautiful, but are also functional for everyday use. Her influences are deeply rooted in the quintessentially British past times of afternoon teas, garden parties and quirky dances. The illustrations are inspired by the idea that when our backs are turned, foxes, birds, squirrels, badgers and hedgehogs come out in force to act out these very English activities. The simplicity of Lianne’s watercolours allows the viewer to create their own narrative for the characters in a collection that is both timeless and contemporary. www.mellorware.co.uk

reeted with a strawberry daiquiri on arrival, it was no less than VIP treatment at The Fruition Hair charity evening at Revolucion de Cuba. Hair and beauty demonstrations, boutique shopping and cocktail master classes – it was the perfect girls night out, and all for a good cause. Event organiser, Anthony Cunningham, said: “We put on the event to show our support for local Sheffield businesses, and to raise money for charity. “My wife, Kerri, has been in the hair industry for many years and I believe in what she does 100 per cent, so I wanted to offer her an opportunity to showcase what she does alongside other Sheffield independents. “I spend a lot of time in big cities like Manchester who are so good at hosting events like this to promote what their city has to offer. “We don’t do enough self-promotion in Sheffield so I thought, if I don’t shout about it, who will?!” Businesses who exhibited at the event included: Boudoir Beauty from Woodhouse who were offering demos for HD Brows and LVL lashes; Lush Meadowhall were offering hand and arm massages plus the chance to try out their products; Relaxation Den were offering mini massages plus a prize draw to win in-salon treatments; and Couture Boutique Online and Anna Roberts Clothing had rails of new-season stock to shop. FITSTEPS

Chic visits Sheffield dance school, City-Limits, to try out their new ‘Strictly’ fun fitness class…

Following on from the Zumba craze, a new dance fitness phenomenon is sweeping the nation. Created by Natalie Lowe and Ian Waite of Strictly Come Dancing, FitSteps incorporates the very best of Ballroom and Latin mixed with the latest proven ways to get fit fast. “It’s already popular in the south but the craze hadn’t hit the north until now” says Jane Bennett, class instructor at City-Limits. “I love how it incorporates a range of dance styles – you have so much fun, you don’t realise

you’re keeping fit.” More than 30 people attended the launch of the FitSteps class in August, and due to demand, City-Limits have now made the class a permanent fixture on their jam-packed class timetable. For the first five or ten minutes, there seemed to be more left feet than right feet in the studio, but as the dancers warmed-up and began to feel more at ease, the moves became more controlled and in sync. The class welcomed a mix of ages and abilities – there was no pressure and Jane was happy to go over the tricky

routines a few extra times for those who needed the practice. You may perceive Ballroom dancing to be a more gentle, relaxed routine – but don’t be fooled, you’ll be leaving the studio with a sweat on. The 50 minute class features a good balance of fast-paced routines and slower more controlled dance techniques. City-Limits is a family-run, world class dance centre. Founded in 1980 by Tony and Judith Bennett, its home to Darren Bennett and Lilia Kopylova, former winners of BBC’s strictly Come Dancing and to Darren’s twin brother, Dale, also a professional dancer at the school. Classes range from ballroom to ballet, salsa to street, Latin dance to break dance. “We aim to enthuse students with a love of dance and to encourage them to lead an active lifestyle” says owner Dale Bennett. “Our students thrive in the modern surroundings of the studios and under the influence of the talented teachers who work at the school.” The FitSteps class is open to all abilities over the age of 16 – there’s no need to book, just turn up! FitSteps classes run Monday 6.40pm7.30pm and Thursday 7.10pm-8pm. City-Limits 607-613 Penistone Rd Sheffield, S6 2GA 0114 234 4866 city-limits.co.uk Words: Jessica Fogarty

So you are completely entitled to freeze or cancel your membership whenever you want, no hassle or fuss. Therefore, at the moment they aren’t asking for a joining fee- yes, that’s right, completely free to join, you just pay per month, no catches. They also have their own ‘Loyalty Promise’ which means that for as long as you are a member, your gym membership will never increase, that’s their promise. For your £10.99 a month you get an awful lot. The new Sheffield gym is very modern and airy and their range of equipment is second to none. They provide cardiovascular machines ranging from treadmills, cross-trainers, bikes as well as a variety of strengthening machines, which work on all the core areas. Inspired Garden...

Spring 2015 bulbs Lee Bestall has been designing and managing the creation of gardens for over 10 years. Lee regularly writes for gardening magazines throughout the country and is a stand in presenter on BBC Radio Sheffield gardening hour. Contact Lee at www. InspiredGardenDesign.co.uk

Native but nice With a huge array of colourful plants available from garden centres, expertly sourced from around the globe, we are continuously spoiled when it comes to choosing new plants for our garden. Fabulous flowers and tropical foliage can bring an incredibly lush feel to a garden, but don’t overlook the natural beauty of our native plants just because they’re right outside your door. The most obvious British wonders are the beautiful old Oak trees, flowering cherries and mixed hedgerows, even the invasive cow parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris) looks great en-masse in spring, but when it comes to plants deemed ‘garden worthy’, consider the traditional (and modern) use of tightly clipped Yew, Holly and Box which has been favoured for generations. Beech (Fagus) is another popular hedging variety, often selected for its beautiful autumn and winter colour and again, it’s one of our natives! Many of the plants native to the UK flower in spring, those such as the sweetly but delicately scented primroses, or the striking red poppies which adorn the fields mid way through the year. Wild, hardy Geraniums grow in the most unlikely places and are very happy naturalizing in grasses, proudly showing off their ‘Chelsea purple’ flowers.

The stunning blooms of Pulsatilla vulgaris (pasque flower) are perfectly displayed over foamy foliage and are low growing and very well behaved (perfect for the modern gardener). Their hairy seed heads also look fun long after the flowers have faded. May and June is showtime for the fox gloves where tall slender steps carry beautiful purple and white spires of flowers and although poisonous, will seed prolifically and brighten a dull corner. The Asian moth orchids (Phalaenopsis) are popular houseplants, but our wild orchid is a plant to treasure. Often found in woodland settings, the purple flowers lurk around on the cool and shady forest floor. For a similar native, more easily available to buy, and worth planting this month look for Colchicums or naked ladies … so called as they produce their flowers well before the leaves appear. The bulbs are quite expensive individually, but quickly bulk up if happy, and will very soon provide you with a flower that will become an interesting talking point. Commonly known as the Autumn Crocus, it does seem strange to see it flower in September, but it has to be one of my favorite native bulbs. Using native plants can also mean a higher rate of success, even in our variable climate, so if your fingers are not so green, its hard to kill these plants … they’re born survivors!

Fresh bulb stock will be arriving directly from Holland this month and delivered to garden centres throughout the country. Why not pop along to Ferndale Garden Centre this weekend for advice on which selection to choose. I caught up with garden centre manager Neil last month who said “As well as selling all the single pack varieties our customers have grown to expect (no pun intended) over recent years we’ve sold an increasing number of pre mixed packets and we’re looking forward to receiving this years delivery which contains an even wider selection. The growers have expertly blended together subtle and striking colour combinations, taking all the hard work out of making up your own. Pre mixed bags of 2-3 varieties have been created for your planting pleasure”. Neil buys direct from Holland growers Kapiteyn and Prns who have been successfully growing bulbs for generations.

Bulb planter To make life easy, why not treat yourself to one of Sheffield based Spear and Jackson’s bulb planters? Simply twist the tool into the ground at the required depth and remove the soil, place the bulb in the hole (at about twice its depth) and replace the soil, firming gently.

Old, grubby tarmac or concrete? Graphica’s Overlay System!

Graphica Resin Surfaces is harnessing new methods to carry out the refurbishment and extension of drives, paths and patios. Graphica Resin Surfaces offers driveways, paths and patios a full refurbishment by restoring and regulating existing concrete and tarmac. This is achieved by using epoxy resin combined with a mixture of loose aggregates of the client’s choice which bounds them together. Customers are left with the appearance of a loose stone effect without any movement of stones. The finished product is stronger than concrete, durable, weed resistant and easy to maintain and, as with all the Graphica Resin Surfaces, anti-slip is a standard feature. Compared to alternative driveway methods such as tarmac, block paving or imprint concrete, the Graphica Resin Surfaces product is one of the most cost effective ways of giving homes and gardens the finishing touches they need without disturbing any existing foundations or adding any waste to the environment. In fact, many customers that wish to extend their existing driveway can do so without planning permission due to the permeable nature of the resin bound system.

For those with a crumbling or slippery drive that requires a makeover, Graphica’s technical surveyors can detail the different non-slip and low maintenance options available. That way customers can make an accurate decision, safe in the knowledge that the company is well informed. Compare Graphica against our competitors online through www.Google.com and see what our customers say about us. You could even visit www.CheckAtrade.com and read our reviews directly. Live Latin Chic visits West One Latin American restaurant, Las Iguanas Words: Jessica Fogarty

Las Iguanas Sheffield re-opened this summer with a new piazza illuminated by festoon lighting, providing the perfect place to kick back and relax with good company, food and drink. The fresh Latin American menu is bursting with flavours from across the continent at affordable prices; try Mexican favourites or Brazilian classics cooked to order, or tuck in to hearty tapas, tacos and big sharing plates.

Las Iguanas 8-9 West One Fitzwilliam Street Devonshire Green Sheffield, S1 4JP

While you choose, fight over a board of bread and olives, spice-dusted corn chips or a taco sharing tray to attack together. You’ll then be spoilt for choice with tapas and starters from greedy whole prawns to rich shreds of duck, smoky pork and garlic chorizo or chargrilled artichoke hearts to name a few. We followed the recommendation of the waitress and sampled the gambas – the greedy whole prawns were split and cooked in a garlic, lemon and chilli sauce, served with ciabatta. We also couldn’t resist ordering the classic nachos – home-cooked corn tortilla chips with melted cheese topped with aji, jalapenos, salsa, sourced cream and guacamole. New to the menu, you can add a topping of barbeque and jalapeno shredded steak, tinga, chilli con carne, cha-cha chorizo and refried black beans. It’s the perfect dish for those with a big appetite. For main course, choose from Mexican classics, grilled sandwiches, dishes from Brazil and beyond, salads and ‘from the flames’. Intrigued by the latter, we ordered the ‘Churrasci Fiasco from the flames’ – skewered, scintillating, marinated and flame-grilled honey-glazed rump steak served with red onion and peppers in a paprika and cumin marinade. Served with a side salad, the dish was fresh and healthy.

0114 252 1010 sheffield@iguanas.co.uk

We also sampled a Mexican classic – chicken fajitas – coriander, lime, paprika, cumin, onions and peppers dished up sizzling with chunky guacamole, sourced cream, jalapenos, home-made tomato salsa and chicken breast strips stuffed in soft wheat tortillas. A plentiful portion full of flavour. We visited on a Thursday evening and the spacious restaurant was surprisingly busy with mid-week diners. Families filled the circular booths while couples dined at a candle-lit table for two. Friendly and efficient, the staff were quick to take our order and clear our plates, but left enough time for us to enjoy our meal in private and relax. If you’ve room left for pudding, choose from a whopping wedge of creamy vanilla cheesecake, handmade sorbet, a pretty pile up of berry Mexican mess or sparkling cinnamon-sugar dusted churros with dips for dunking. We’ll definitely be back to dine here again soon! Open Sunday - Thursday 12:00 - 22:00 Friday - Saturday 12:00 - 23:30

EAT & SLEEP EXPERIENCE: MARCOS & THE HAMPTON BY HILTON Chic experiences 24 hours in Sheffield’s Hampton by Hilton Hotel and adjoining Marco’s New York Italian Restaurant Words : Jessica F ogarty

Sleep. Walk in to the bright and airy reception area and you’re greeted by a friendly smile behind the reception desk. We fill out the check-in forms whilst the receptionist gives us directions to find our room and tells us about the facilities we can take advantage of. He can’t do enough for us and we instantly feel welcome. We head up in the elevator to the seventh floor and along the tastefully decorated corridor. The freshly painted rooms aren’t huge, but they have been cleverly designed to make the most of the space. The queen bed with comfortable pillows and crisp linens takes central position with a spacious work area and thoughtful touches around the room.

Sliding doors reveal an adjoining wardrobe and en-suite with walk-in power-shower. The bathroom definitely has the wow factor, equipped with exclusive Hampton branded toiletries and an abundance of fresh towels in varied sizes. Draw back the curtains to reveal a street view of Sheffield city life. Given the central location, we enjoyed a surprisingly quiet night’s sleep. You can’t fault the cleanliness either – there’s not a speck of dust in sight. Head downstairs in the hotel for your complimentary breakfast and sit in the modern tub chairs while you eat from the all-you-can-eat hot or cold buffet – from cereal and pastries to the full-works British breakfast. Check out is 11am. We left with full-bellies, feeling relaxed from a night of luxury.

A jaw-dropping £9 million was spent on the makeover, transforming Sheffield’s former iconic West Bar Police Station in to the new swanky Hampton by Hilton Hotel. The 142 plush en-suite bedrooms have no resemblance to the cells they once were. Each room boasts flat screen TV’s and free Wi-Fi; all guests can enjoy a complimentary breakfast, free use of the gym and relax in the 24-hour bar/ dining area. But despite the ultra-modern refurbishment, the history has not been completely forgotten – the original opening plaque is framed on the wall for all to admire and each floor has wall art giving hints to the building’s background.

Eat. The celebrity owned restaurant offers affordable dining in a relaxed, stylish setting. It impresses from the word go. As we walk through the door we’re engrossed with the décor – the glamourous striped armchair, the sleek leather booths and the walls covered with pictures of the man himself, Marco Pierre White. Marco’s menu has been inspired by the TV chef ’s Italian heritage and love for American / New York dishes. Making the most of fresh local produce, dishes include a selection of fresh pastas, steaks, ribs, seafood, burgers and handmade pizzas. We ordered from the a la carte menu. The waitress recommended her favourite dishes – the garlic prawns followed by spaghetti carbonara and raspberry tumbler dessert. I take her advice on the starter and it doesn’t disappoint. The flavoursome garlic and lemon prawns were perched on a slice of crusted bread. Delicious. For main course I ordered the tuna steak – yellow fin tuna simply grilled with lemon and served with olives, capers, fresh herbs, tomato,

olive oil and new potatoes. My dining partner opts for the asparagus with poached egg starter. The perfectly poached egg lays above a line of chargrilled asparagus – both topped with a parmesan crust giving a good balance of flavour and texture. A big lover of steak, he opts for the 8oz fillet steak pepi for main course – a tender slab of meat served with lazy fries, a garlic roasted tomato and peppercorn sauce. The portions are plentiful and the food is flawless. With just enough time to let our twocourses settle, the waitress returns to take our final order. We choose the recommended raspberry tumbler dessert from the specials menu – a crumbly biscuit base with a heavenly white chocolate centre, topped with - 42 -

fresh raspberries served in a large glass tumbler. We decide it’s a good idea to share. We washed down our courses with a bottle of very dry, delicate white wine. The wine list features more than 20 varieties – herbaceous and aromatic whites, simple delicate or juicy medium-bodied fruit-led reds. The knowledgeable staff are happy to offer their recommendations to accompany the dishes you order. Given the standard of food served, the first-class service and the swanky setting, we were more than impressed with the reasonably priced bill that came in at just under £90. A venue for all occasions – we doubt it will be long before we return again.

LUNCH: Kosmonaut Located just off the beaten track on Tariff Street, the stripped back bar is a daytime haven for lunches, coffee meetings and gettogethers with a fine selection of artisan beers and craft cocktails for the evenings. Sit in a red leather barber’s chair while you browse the menu featuring finger-licking-good burgers, pizzas, sandwiches and picnic style snacks; or head to the basement for ping pong parties and DJ sets. Kosmanout.co.uk DINNER: Burgers, beer and bowling Once-upon-a-dual-carriageway there was only bowling. Sticky carpets, crappy hot dogs and warm beer: It pretty much sucked. Now bowling is here – at All Star Lanes, Deansgate. It’s foo-ooo-oood, fine cocktails, crisp beer, good people and oh yeah, bowling. Walk in and you’d have no idea a state-of-theart bowling alley was hidden at the back of the venue. We head over to the central island bar for a cocktail then a waitress escorts us to our table. It’s a new concept bowling diner – while the venue does retain some tradition features such as the leather booths and mirrored walls – it’s certainly much sleeker than you’d expect. We ordered from the ‘Eat, Drink, Bowl’ menu – two courses, a cocktail and a game of bowling for a very reasonable £29pp. Starters include: popcorn squid, hot chicken wings and salt beef croquettes; the burger menu features maple bacon cheeseburgers, NYC salt beef Reuben and Seafood ‘Po Boy’ sub; plus main

Burgers & beats

Twisted Burger Company, the much loved burger restaurant, is taking over another pub kitchen! Currently serving from The Harley, Glossop Road, they are now also serving from The Riverside, Mowbray Street. This means the burger loving folk of Sheffield will have two fantastic music venues where they can indulge in burgers and beats. Words: Joss Woodend

OUR VERDICT First up came the mouth-watering Holy Cluck (£7.50), made up of a double chicken patty, chorizo, American cheese, guacamole and jalapeno salsa. Charlotte Leaver, Twisted Burger Company’s Brand Manager, explained how the chicken patty was a combination of chicken and eight per cent chicken liver. The chicken liver added an extra level of depth to the dish, making the chicken patty simply delicious and stepping it above any other chicken burger I have ever tried. Next, the Pig Daddy Kane (£7.97) was placed down on the table in front of us. This flavourful combination of a double beef patty, pulled pork, American cheese, Kraken BBQ Sauce and chorizo and apple jam made an amazing dish and it is no wonder that this burger makes up over a third of the burgers sold by the company. This is Hardcore (£7.95), the company’s aptly named hot burger, is not for the faint hearted. The combination of a double beef patty, spicy ‘nduja sausage’, American cheese, deep fried jalapenos and Harley Hot Hot Hot Sauce creates a powerful and hot dish that doesn’t lose its initial flavour. Often in hot food, flavour can be overpowered by heat, but with this burger that is certainly not the case. The menu also offers up vegetarian options that are for once packed full of flavour and taste. The Drop Dead Double Stuffed Falaf-Hell Burger (£6.25), designed by Oli Sykes of Bring Me The Horizon and Drop Dead, strikes the perfect balance between the ‘sweeeeet chilli and lime sauce’ and the soft texture of the falafel burger and grilled aubergine, lifting the dish to another level. The other vegetarian option, Baby Got Guac (£6.50), is definitely one for the mushroom lovers out there. Containing both button and porcini mushrooms in the patty and a grilled mushroom, Asian Slaw and guacamole on top of that, there’s no shortage of different flavours. The last three burgers to be served – Return of the Mac (£6.95), Smokin’ Joe Frazier (£7.50) and Super Supersize Me (£8.50) – deserve a mention too. Return of the Mac features a double bacon patty, the first bacon based burger to be served in the UK, alongside mac’n’cheese and pesto. The Smokin’ Joe Frazier’s combination of double chicken, smoked streaky bacon, Monterey jack cheese and both ranch and Harley House dressing makes for tasty dish. If you’re up for the challenge

of the Super Supersize Me burger – containing a triple beef patty, streaky bacon, American cheese, gherkin and Techno burger sauce – then you won’t be left feeling disappointed. The sides on the menu satisfy the taste buds too. Twisted Burger served up their two best fries, Jalapeno Business Fries (£4.75) and Pig Pimpin’ Fries (£5.50), which are perfect for sharing. Both dishes looked visually impressive, with the skin kept on the fries adding a great look to the dish. Big Poppa Bits (£2.95) – deep fried jalapenos and a smoked cheese sauce on the side – had an incredible sweet taste to the jalapenos that tasted divine. Crack’n’Cheese (£3.75) successfully upgraded firm favourite mac’n’cheese, adding bacon bits and diced jalapenos on top of it. Twisted Burger Company at The Riverside provides a well thought out menu, friendly atmosphere and welcoming staff. Their Executive Chef Alex Malins is, as his colleagues said, a true genius and master at cooking up tasty, attractive and imaginative dishes. The expansion of the company into The Riverside is a fantastic addition to the venue and will hopefully attract more people up into Kelham Island. After an evening of great food, I left The Riverside feeling like a true member of the Twisted Burger gang.

And

boom

goes the colour bomb…

Words : Jessica Fogarty

A tsunami of colour burst in to Sheffield last month for the Colour Me Rad annual 5K race. The race fired off at Graves Park on August 16, in a blaze of colour bombs and cannons. Race-goers started off with a shirt as pure and white as your granddaddy’s dentures, but throughout the run, their chaffing thighs were coated with colour bombs of blue, green, pink, purple, and yellow until they came out like a tie-dyed hippy on the other side. Each section of the run added a new explosion of colour to their clean, painter’s palate until they crossed the finish line into a final blitzkrieg of colour. Colour Me Rad is set to return to Sheffield in 2015. Keep a watch for more information at colormerad.co.uk.

Chao Baby Chic visits the Palm Sugar Lounge at Chao Baby Meadowhall, to try out their cocktail master class. Words: Jessica Fogarty

The Drink Palm Sugar Lounge certainly adds a touch of class to the Oasis food court at Meadowhall Shopping Centre. Adjoining the Chao Baby restaurant, the bar offers an exclusive area to relax with drinks before or after dining, or just simply to stop-off for a well-deserved break between shopping. The cocktail menu has been created by Chao baby manager, Michael Wells, and assistant manager, Matt Ward. “We have a mix of classic cocktails and Thai inspired recipes” says Matt, who leant his mixology skills whilst working in bars in Sydney, Australia. “If you want to try something new – just ask us to recommend a cocktail that will compliment your meal or suit your tastes. There’s no set recipe for our cocktails, we can make them spicy, mild, strong, sweet – you tell us and we’ll create it bespoke for you.” The Chao Baby team make it look easy, but as we step behind the bar we soon realise there’s an art to the movement and a knowledge to the ingredients. There was no flairing allowed (the fancy throwing of spirits) but we were able to try our hand at mixing and shaking. First up was the Tom Yam Siam – a traditional Thai cocktail recipe known for

its spice. This includes vodka, rum, lime juice, lemongrass and yes, red chilli – the same ingredients used to make a Tom Yam Soup but minus the vodka and rum. It’s certainly an acquired taste – you’ll love or hate the heat from the chillies.

We then tried out some more traditional cocktail recipes including a raspberry mojito, frozen strawberry daiquiri and a mango based mocktail (there are a choice of non-alcoholic mock-cocktails for the drivers / the non-drinkers/ or those under 18). It’s great fun and although you may need a little extra practice back home, you’ll take away some skills you can put in to practice at any future function.

The food After an afternoon of mixing and tasting, we were ready to soak up our cocktails by sampling a selection of Thai dishes from the Chao Baby restaurant. We sampled a beef curry with egg fried and boiled rice; mini spring rolls with battered fish with chips, and a chicken Pad Thai hidden under a giant omelette – I’d never seen Pad Thai served like this before but as well as looking amazing, the combination of flavours were incredible. Chao Baby opened its doors in Meadowhall in 2011. The venue is one of eleven restaurants and bars under the Thai Leisure Group name – a family-run business owned jointly by Kim Kaewkraikhot and Martin Stead. Kim was a chef and she ran her own small restaurant in Bangkok. Kim’s food was renowned in the local neighbourhood for its fantastic flavours. She was committed to finding the freshest produce available and she could be seen out-and-about each morning scouring the local market stalls carefully selecting her ingredients. Kim operated a basic menu but her forte was in developing dishes of the day using the ingredients she could source. As Martin learnt more about Thailand so he began to see an opportunity and to set about creating a vision. That vision was to bring authentic Thai cuisine and genuine Thai hospitality to the UK. In 2004, Kim and Martin opened Chaophraya

Leeds to widespread acclaim. This was the first real premium-level authentic Thai restaurant in Yorkshire and something, it transpired; the people of Leeds had been waiting for. In 2007, they expanded their empire opening Chaophraya Manchester, then Chaophraya Liverpool, and in the same year, the group also opened Yee Rah, which is a stones-throw from Chaophraya Liverpool. Yee Rah offers a ThaiEuropean fusion menu that is ideal for families and those looking for more conventional dishes alongside traditional Thai dishes. In 2010, the new ChaoBaby concept opened in Manchester’s Trafford Centre. The ChaoBaby brand is designed for use in large-scale shopping centres. Its unique selling point is that it offers the same authentic Thai cuisine as the core Chaophraya brand but in a very accessible buffetstyle format. In 2011, Chaophraya Birmingham opened then a second ChaoBaby, this time in Sheffield’s Meadowhall shopping centre. By 2012, two new sites opened in Scotland: Chaophraya Edinburgh and Glasgow, which is set over four floors on the busy Buchanan Street, is the largest Thai restaurant in Europe. Then in 2014, the latest brand Thaikhun joined the Thai Leisure Group family. Opening in the bustling Spinningfields area of Manchester, pronounced ‘tycoon’, the name celebrates the street food sellers in Thailand who are real tycoons – - 14 -

owning and running their own successful food businesses and leading the way in Thai street food. Much like Kim. The company has invested in its core value of ‘Ow Jai Sai’ which translates from Thai into ‘we care about everything’ – you can see these few words on the collars of the uniforms of all staff in each of the restaurants. The group’s vision is to continue to develop the best of Thai within the UK and take the brand south. In the next three years, they hope to have 13 more sights, introducing a new concept ‘street food’ dining format. We have no doubt that their success will continue!

which helps me to see things in a different light. My summer collections are more about bright and bold colours. Summer is the time to experiment but my collections still have a contemporary and classic feel to them.

Do you design and tailor yourself or do you have a team in place? I design and oversee the production of every piece in the brand. I am the sole designer and I have a production team that help bring my vision to reality. A lot of what I do is on my own in my studio with help of my seamstresses. Overall, the brand is my vision but I have to work with a lot of people – from photographers, embroiders and models – along the way from the conception to creation. I am meeting new people every day and I love to collaborate with creative minds.

How has the brand expanded since you first established? In 2012, I did my first photo shoot which was an invaluable experience. This was the first time my brand received exposure and I really learned about the importance of social media. I was getting lots of messages and positive feedback over Facebook. I then did a small campaign in 2013. The campaign was smaller than my introductory campaign; I focused on getting a handful of pieces exactly how I wanted them to be. This collection was all about quality over quantity and the response was amazing. The brand received a lot of exposure and really motivated me to go big in 2014. This year has been all about marketing and exposure. I want to get my brand out there and for people to see what I have devoted so much of my time and energy towards.

What have been the highlights for you? One particular highlight is the Fleuri collection that I have been working on this year. I have always been very involved in everything I do but in the past I have had to employ people when it comes to things like marketing and branding. However, now, whilst I still collaborate with other creatives, I can say I was truly behind every aspect and detail of the collection. This is more time-consuming but it really is worth it and it makes everything more rewarding.

Tell us more about your latest collection, SG Fleuri? I spent a lot of time thinking about what I wanted to do this year the brand and my work but I wasn’t happy at first with some of my initial concepts. I wanted my 2014 collections to be a special statement to lay the foundations for my brand in the years to come. It had to be personal. So I decided to go home one weekend to see if I could find inspiration there. This was completely the right thing to do. I spent some time looking through my old clothes and my mother’s clothes and I eventually came across some of her scarves from her wedding. I remember thinking to myself that these scarves were older than me

but I was captivated by the embroidery and so I asked my mother if I could borrow them. I then took the embroidery and reworked it with my own personal styles and contemporary influences. I now have a collection of bespoke, couture pieces that really represent what I am about as a designer.

You teamed up with Sheffield based videographer, Khalid moon, and international supermodel turned creative director, Zaf Shabir, for the collection video. Tell us about this? Yes, I teamed up with Zaf Shabir for my Fleuri collection. Khalid, an expert filmmaker specialising in cinematography, photography and music production, came along with Zaf to film the behind the scene in the studio. From there, we went outdoor for our editorial shoot where Khalid did the footage of the models walking in the wood. I believe it was just a casual shoot nothing was specially planned, however the result for the footage was awesome. The attention to detail from Zaf from the beginning to the end of the day was remarkable, from hair and make up looks, styling, and posing of the models – all were clearly run through me so I was perfectly aware of the status of my campaign shoot. Khalid was barely noticeable, capturing all the moments of the shoot, which was astonishing. I’m still in awe of the fashion film that he produced that I was really not aware of. If this is what he can produce without being noticeable, can you imagine if he was commissioned for a complete fashion film? We are already planning a big international fashion film together, will keep you posted not that very soon!

What do you think sets you apart from your competitors? What is different about my brand is that it really is my vision. My unique experience and influences go into every piece that I do. Of course I have inspirations, but I am not one to follow trends. I want every woman who shares my love for unique patterns to be able to enjoy what I do. I don’t refer to my work as “Asian” or “Western” fashion and i don’t want to limit my customer base to a single market. Now the world is more interconnected than ever and I think my brand reflects that.

Do you have a specific type of customer? Right now I’m just working on the brand and I don’t have a specific customer base. One thing I have noticed with each collection is that my customers are conscientious women who share my love for fashion that is different to everything else that is out there.

What’s next for you and the brand? I just want to keep moving forward with the brand. With each collection I do, I learn more and I grow as a designer. I want to keep working with the best people and I hope as many people as possible get to experience what I have to offer.

SG: Samaira

Ghani Samaira Ghani, 28, is known for her ability to combine the best elements from Western and Eastern fashion to craft seamless celebrations of culture in the form of attire. The independent British designer specialises in combining traditional elements of Western and Eastern fashion with both current and future catwalk trends. Her tailor-made creations are made using only the best materials; exquisite embroideries complimented with masterful, traditional technique. From weddings and party wear to formal, evening or casual – Samaria’s designs are one-of-a-kind pieces that will be treasured for years. Words: Jessica Fogarty

Was fashion always the dream career path for you? Fashion has always been my main interest since as long as I can remember – any fashion designer will tell you the same. I want to spend my life doing what I love and for me that is fashion design. One of my earliest memories is of my mother doing some basic stitching at home and I always used to help her. I then started to make little tweaks to her outfits and it all just grew from there. Being a fashion designer is hard work but nothing is more rewarding than seeing someone taking pride in a unique piece that I created. The creative industry is also full of so many incredible people who are so much fun to work and grow with. I can’t imagine myself doing anything else.

Where is the brand based? My brand is based in Nottingham now but I’m Manchester born and bred. I love the city and it will always be a part of me no matter where I go. I re-located to Nottingham when I married.

When did you launch the SG brand? I first launched my brand in the autumn of 2012.

Where and what did you study?

What is the concept?

I studied BA (hons) Embroidery at Manchester Metroplitan University.

When designing my collections I always have recurrent themes in everything I do. At the heart of what I do is integrating the best of Asian and Western fashion cultures which reflects my own cultural tastes and identity. What is different about the brand is that I design for the modern woman regardless of her background or ethnicity. I want women from all cultures to be able to enjoy my pieces. Fashion should not be confined to where you are from and I am a firm believer in celebrating our differences. My work is still evolving and growing. However, I have so much more that I want to explore and share in future collections.

What inspires you? I like to find inspiration in everyday things that we can all relate to. There have been times when I’m out having lunch with a friend and I’ll notice shapes in the food that we order. Ultimately, I think nature is one of the biggest influences in any type of design and I have this in mind with me wherever I go. In the winter I like to go to museums and to different exhibitions to soak up the culture. In the summer I prefer to be outdoors
