ELLA HENDERSON Words: Jessi ca Foga rty
“the whole
album is like a diary to me.
”
Since the release of her debut, millionselling single ‘Ghost’, Ella has received two BRITs nominations for Best British Female and Best British Single, seen her debut album ‘Chapter One’ hit #1 in the UK and reach platinum status. Plus Ella has released three further smash hit singles including ‘Glow’, ‘Yours’ and the recent ‘Mirror Man.’ In the US her album also hit #11 on the Billboard charts with ‘Ghost’ selling over a million copies. Ahead of her own highly anticipated tour, Ella is currently performing as the special guest on Take That’s mammoth arena tour which stopped off in Sheffield for three nights in June.
We speak to the 19 year old Grimsby girl to find out more about her teen success story…
How is 2015 treating you? Great thanks. I’m currently on tour supporting Take That. It’s really fun being on the road with the boys and it’s amazing to be part of the show.
How has your life changed since X Factor success in 2013? Everything has changed. I never thought I would have travelled the world by 18 years old. I always had dreams of backpacking but life has moved a lot quicker than I thought it would. The last few years have been mental.
Of the countries you’ve visited, which have been the most memorable? I love both Australia and New Zealand. The album did so well out there too.
You’ve also had massive success in the US! How does that compare to your success in the UK? My fans are quite similar – they’re all so supportive. It’s mental to think people all over the world are listening to my music, though. Still now, it’s hard to get my head around that.
What’s your favourite track produced to date?
We’re happy to hear you’ve added tour dates in Sheffield and Grimsby – do you still get to spend time up North? This is my first tour so I’m really excited. I try to spend as much time as possible up North to see my family and friends so I’m glad to be performing in both Sheffield and Grimsby. After taking my time to write this record, I now feel ready to finally get these songs up on a stage and bring them to life with my band. Performing live is what I feel I was born to do! There really is no better feeling that could match up to the adrenaline rush of a real, live, buzz of an audience.”
If you could choose just one artist to collaborate with, who would it be? Ed Sheeran. He is amazingly talented. Where do you want to be this time next year? Hopefully releasing my next album. I started writing at the top of the year.
Ella will be performing at Sheffield O2 Academy on Friday November 6th. Tickets are on sale now. www.stubhub.co.uk/ www.gigsandtours.com / www.ticketmaster.co.uk.
Every track is meaningful – the whole album is like a diary to me. But if I had to pick just one, I’d choose Mirror Man. I wrote that while out in America.
What’s next for you following the Take That tour? I’ve got a full calendar of festivals booked for over the summer. I’ve never even visited a festival so the prospect of performing at one is daunting but exciting. Then I’m embarking on my own tour in the autumn.

WALEED ‘DYNAMITE’ DIN Words: Jessica Fogarty
Photography : Aiden Marples
I’ll be fighting for the Commonwealth Title at Magna Centre. This is the next big fight for me. It would mean a lot to win the title – the last Asian to win this title was Amir Khan in 2007. It’s the stepping stone I need to take me to the next level. This fight will be shown Live on the channel SPIKE TV so I’m really looking forward to showcasing my skills.
How is training going? “I was given the nickname of ‘the surgeon’ because I’m so precise with my hits in the ring.”
How did your career start? I was a late starter – I took up boxing at the age of 16. My Dad had always been interested in the sport and I’ve always watched it growing up, but it wasn’t until then that I stepped foot in the gym. One year later when I turned 17, I had my first amateur fight. Then last year, at 21, after 35 amateur fights, I turned professional.
What has been your biggest success since turning pro? Everything I’ve done has been a success so far. I’ve had seven professional fights and seven wins in the space of seven months of being a professional which is unheard of; I recently signed a promotional contract with Dennis Hobson Promotions and Platinum Promotions which is run by Asif Vali who has done previous work with Amir Khan and is currently working with Tyson Fury; but the highlight of my career to date has to be winning the senior ABA crown.
What’s next for you? I’m going out to America shortly to train at Wild Card Boxing Club – the best gym in the world – to prepare for 10th October 2015 (date to be confirmed) when
It’s been hard as I was fasting most of July. I had to keep training though to keep my fitness up and work around it. I’ve been training later in the evening, so when I come out of the gym it’s time to eat.
What’s your typical training routine? I run at 5.30am every morning before I eat, I’ll do strength work at the gym mid-day then sparring in the evening.
What does your diet consist of? I just eat clean. Porridge every morning then chicken, fish, vegetables, steak, pasta and rice is pretty much it for 8-9 weeks repeated.
What foods do you miss the most? Pizza , chocolate and my mother’s cooking! The first thing I’ll eat after a fight is pizza, even if its 5am in the morning.
What weight do you fight at? I box under eight stone. My weight never moves no matter how much pizza and chocolate I eat after a fight though. I’ve been 7st 12 for all of my adult life.
What’s your end goal? Every fighter's end goal is to train & fight in America. All the big names have done it. That is the dream.
What motivates you? The sport itself inspires me. I want them shiny belts around my waist and i won’t still till i win them all.
If you weren’t boxing, what would you be doing? I have no idea. Boxing is my life. I have literally no time to do anything else. I’ve previously worked as a Joiner and also worked in retail (Never again!)
How do you spend your free time after a fight? I usually take a holiday but I’ll still train wherever I go.
Explain your fight name to us, ‘Dynamite Din’? I took me a while to think it up. It’s about the best word that would fit with my surname. I was originally given the nickname of ‘the surgeon’ because of how precise and clinical I am.
Have you ever suffered any bad injuries from the ring? Touch wood – no. I’ve caused a few though. My aim is to hit and not get hit.
Who do you have to thank for getting to where you are today? My coach – Keith Palmer – I can’t thank him enough for his ongoing support; my dad for taking me to the gym and introducing me to the sport; and of course Dennis Hobson and Asif Vali for believing in me. ____________
Show your support for Waleed Din at the Commonwealth Title fight at Magna, Sheffield, this October – visit Waleed’s social media pages for tickets and information. T: @Waleed_Din

Lazy Dreads 14
Words & Photography: A nna Burdal
Chic meets YouTube star: Christian ‘Lazy Dreads’ Hopewell He’s become one of the biggest dreadlock icons to this date, working towards helping people on their journey to lock up their hair, as well as disproving myths and stereotypes about the hairstyle. Since he first launched his YouTube channel three years ago, he has gained 35 000 subscribers and the reputation of “dreadlock guru”. Christian ‘Lazy Dreads’ Hopewell, 23, never thought his channel, made from his bedroom in Fulwood, would ever become this popular. “A couple of years ago I set up this YouTube channel called Lazy Dreads. I did it because I was tired of the lack of advice out there. The advice that did exist was, in my opinion, bad advice. There weren’t really any genuine people online who helped people with their dreadlock problems - only dreadlock stores and salons which would give people advice that they in turn would gain from. It was basically something along the lines of: ‘the best way to start your dreadlocks is coming to our salon; pay us £100 to have your hair back-combed, buy our special shampoo and maintenance kit. Then of course come back to us for regular check-ups to make sure your dreadlocks are doing alright.’ Having dreadlocks really shouldn’t be that much work, and that’s why I thought ‘Lazy Dreads’ would be the perfect name for the channel. I wanted to re-assure people about their dreadlocks and to encourage them to not give
up on the process - because getting fully formed dreadlocks can take some time and that’s the main thing new dreadheads freak out about. So how did it all start? I sat down in front of my iPhone in my parents’ dining room on a grey November day, nearly three years ago now. The quality was bad with just a little editing done in Windows Movie Maker. I was awkward and at the time I didn’t think anyone would watch it. My first video is called My 5 year update, celebrating my hair’s birthday. I posted the video on a dreadlock forum called Dreadlock Truth, and they encouraged me to do more. With all the positive feedback my confidence in front of the camera grew. I’m a completely different person now than I was back then. The channel is soon three years old, and most of my content is now filmed on a Canon 700D DSLR camera, using a Røde microphone and all my videos are edited in Final Cut Pro X. I have uploaded about 250 videos containing advice, tutorials, reviews and facts. The channel has reached 35 000 subscribers, and this summer I hit 2 million views. Compared to other big YouTubers it’s a small number, but in the world of dreadlocks it’s actually quite significant. I only make videos about one specific hairstyle. That’s it. The fact that 35 000 people in the world wants to watch me talk about something that random is mind blowing. Sometimes people tell me I will run out of content sooner or later, and maybe they’re right, but I can’t see that day coming up in any near future. I think as long as people keep asking questions, I will always
have new content to make videos about. I receive lots of questions every day through the comment section on YouTube, on my website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. I try to answer all of them by commenting back. However, if I get asked a question enough times, I will usually make a video out of it, whether it’s something like “what should things should I consider before starting dreadlocks?”, or something a bit simpler like “do dreadlocks grow?”(To answer that last question: of course they do, they are made of hair. Hair grows no matter what shape or form you have it in). Running a YouTube channel and all the social media that goes along side it can be very time consuming. I spend most of my free time running all my pages, and I think that’s the reason why my channel has become so popular. People like to interact with me and knowing that I’m one of them too – a dreadhead. I’m not sure if I would say I’ve ‘made it’ on YouTube, but my best tip is to just interact with your viewers. To me there’s no such thing as a stupid question. I will answer all questions to the best of my ability, and if I don’t know the answer I will say so in a polite way or direct them to where they can find the answer. I hope I can continue to help people feel confident about their dreadlock journey.”

Doc/Fest
Sheffield Doc/Fest 2015 Words: Phil Bayles
Nina Simone
For more than 20 years the Steel City has played host to Doc/Fest, which has grown from a tiny weekend in the Showroom Cinema to one of the most important events on any cinephile’s calendar. This year’s festival featured over 150 films from more than 60 countries, and we’ve picked five that we can’t stop thinking about.
1
Good Girl
“A feel-good film about depression” doesn’t sound like the cheeriest of movies, but it’s the perfect way of describing Norwegian director Solveig Melkeraaen’s frank and touching film, chronicling her battles with a disease that so many suffer from in silence. Solveig’s sense of humour means there’s plenty to chuckle about, but unlike overrated Oscar-winner Silver Linings Playbook it doesn’t try to peddle any easy answers – the scenes involving her treatment with electroshock therapy are extremely hard to watch.
2
Orion: The Man Who Would Be King
Fans of 2012 documentary Searching for Sugar Man will adore Orion; another story of a musical legend so far-fetched that it has to be true. The sight of a towering man in a sparkly mask with the voice of Elvis Presley is even funnier than this sentence makes it sound, but director Jeanie Finlay reveals a tragic side to the story. Interviews with Orion’s groupies, bandmates and friends reveal just how far he was willing to go in his quest for fame, and the results weren’t always pretty.
3
What Happened, Miss Simone?
Nina Simone is surely one of the most recognisable voices of all time, but Liz Garbus reveals how shockingly little we really know about her. Thanks to access to Nina’s private diaries and audio recordings of the woman herself, Garbus paints a portrait of a woman battling with all manner of demons as she struggled to be an artist who reflected her own time. Few could imagine the chanteuse behind hits like “Feelin’ Good” and “I Put A Spell On You” walking up to Martin Luther King and declaring “I’m not non-violent”, yet Simone was one of the loudest voices in the Civil Rights movement.
17
If you want to watch great movies, you go to Cannes. If you want to watch great documentaries, you come to Sheffield.
4
A Sinner in Mecca
People understand the word jihad as a holy war, but it can also mean a deeply personal crisis of faith. Filmmaker Parvez Sharma starts A Sinner in Mecca by asking a deep personal question – is it possible to be a good Muslim, and also be gay? Sharma films his Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca; an extremely risky move, as he could be executed for setting foot in Saudi Arabia. His tense but illuminating film reveals that he isn’t the only one experiencing a crisis of faith – the entire film is a scathing critique of the Saudi government’s use of modern capitalism to destroy Islamic history. In one of the more surreal moments, it turns out there’s a Starbucks opposite the Kaaba in Mecca.
5
The Russian Woodpecker
There’s no film quite like The Russian Woodpecker, and there’s nobody quite like its subject: bizarre Ukrainian artist Fedor Alexandrovich. It feels darkly comic at first, watching a shaggylooking artist chase a shaggy dog story about secret Soviet experiments that may be linked to the Chernobyl disaster. But as Fedor uncovers more information, his crackpot conspiracy theory becomes worryingly convincing. By the time the story has come full circle, and Fedor is filming separatist riots on the streets of Kiev, it’s downright terrifying – a menacing reminder that the Cold War might heat up again at any moment.

Food review: Gigi’s Cucina Words : J essica F ogarty
We walk through the doors without a reservation – it looks busy but the waitress is quick to find room and set us up a table for two. The atmosphere is relaxed yet sophisticated and the food is affordable quality. I like the open kitchen where diners can witness the chefs cooking in real time, and even grab a chat with him when he isn’t too busy with orders. Gigi’s Cucina is a family-run, authentic yet contemporary Italian restaurant situated on Oakbrook Road. Although having only recently opened its doors in winter 2014, the venue is already popular with local residents and word is quickly spreading further afield.
Making the most of fresh local ingredients, Gigi Cucina serves quality authentic and contemporary Italian food that includes well-known classic and original Italian dishes including fresh pastas, seafood and handmade pizzas, with a special emphasis on seasonal dishes.
We ordered the creamy mushroom spaghetti and a 29/01/2015 16:40 vegetable risotto. At first glance, the portions looked relatively small but the rich ingredients soon filled our stomachs. Complete with two soft drinks, we were happy to receive a bill for a very fair £20.
The wine list has something for every budget. The venue’s focus is on value and quality – they carefully hand-pick all of the wine, from the most expensive bottle to the best-selling house wine, all of which are chosen to fully complement the dishes. A basket of complimentary freshly baked breads and oils arrived for us to graze on while we browsed the menu and the friendly waitress informed us of the daily specials. Each lunchtime the venue offers additional lunch options for a ‘budget buy’. For £6.50, diners could enjoy a creamy mushroom spaghetti dish or a spicy tomato pasta.

Revolucion de Cuba Rum Club
Chef tip: Add a little rum sauce to your burrito for even more flavour.
First up was white rum – an initial taste of caramel and toasted almonds with an unusual but light aftertaste of pepper. Next, spiced rum – boasting a strong banana twang this is the most popular rum used in Revolucion de Cuba’s cocktails. And finally, Gosling – traditionally served in champagne bottles, this rum is associated with piracy and has a strong flavour of treacle. Leave the car at home and put on your dancing shoes.
New to rum? So was I until I attended rum tasting at Revolucion de Cuba (check the website for exclusive Sheffield events) and boy, what a way to start! Our host Wayne introduced us to their collection – from £20 a bottle to £20 a shot.

“On busy days, the amount of burritos I make is well in to the hundreds,” Chef Toddy tells us, as he finishes folding the wrap of his example burrito. “Your turn,” he smiles. Ok, so I may be a regular ‘eater’ of the burrito, but this is my first time as a ‘maker’. On to a flat flour tortilla goes a lashing of sour cream, a sprinkling of cheese, a generous scoop of rice, mixed peppers, refried beans and the main ingredient – the meat. So far so good, but rolling the wrap is the hard part. The knack is to fold the wrap in half, scrunch it, then roll tight tucking in all of the edges. Easier said than

R evoluci on de C uba, 1 M ap p in Street, T HE D R I NK Margarita masterclass I grab the cocktail menu and allow Liam, the Revolucion de Cuba cocktail master, to show me the way to Margarita heaven. Personal preference, but I like my glass salted so I grab a margarita glass, graze the rim with a segment of lime then in the most elegantly way, I dunk the rim in to the salt tray. Now for the contents. In to a cocktail mixer goes the ice, 2oz tequila, 1oz lime juice, 1oz Cointreau, then we shake. Through a drainer flows the classic margarita finished with a lime on the side. Perfect.

CAFÉ NAAZ 24
Words : J essica F ogarty
Café Naaz isn’t your average Indian restaurant. Based in Wath-uponDearne, this purpose built venue offers a fresh, modern approach to South Asian dining.
Walk through the doors of this stone built property in to a contemporary furnished restaurant and bar. We’re immediately greeted by the welcoming owner Naaz (hence the venue name) who takes us to our table overlooking the town centre. Formally a chef himself, Naaz has personally created the menu which features a selection of traditional classic dishes amongst his own creations. Poppadums and a pickle tray arrive as an appetiser while Naaz offers his recommendations. To start I opt for the King Prawn Tandoori, £4.50 – king size prawns marinated in a specially prepared sauce and cooked in Tandoor, served with salad. My dining partner ordered the Onion Bhaji, £2.70 – chopped onions, gram flour and spices, fried and served with salad. It’s up there as one of the best bhajis I’ve ever tried. For main, I opt for Kagazie Murgh, £10.90 -
marinated chicken breast cooked the Hinalayon way served with delicate spinach and roast garlic puree. Created by Naaz, this is the only restaurant serving the dish in South Yorkshire. It arrives at the table served in a ballooned foil case. It looks as impressive as it tastes. My dining partner ordered the Naaz Special, £10.90 – pieces of chicken cooked in Tandoor, marinated with honey mangoes and delicate aromatic herbs and spices for a mild and sweet finish. To accompany we order a pilau rice and a spiced naan bread – which actually tastes a little like pizza. We’re full, but if you do have the appetite then be sure to take a look at the dessert menu – next time, I think I’ll leave enough room for a coffee and a half coconut filled with ice cream.

Swanky Franks Words: J essica F ogarty No one leaves here hungry! Swanky Frank’s serve up some of the best American diner food we’ve ever tasted – from loaded flame-grilled burgers to giant hotdogs, grills, pizzas and salads. The two-storey venue is hidden just off Chesterfield Road in Woodseats. The décor is the first thing that’ll grab your attention – the walls are covered from floor to ceiling in American diner memorabilia and there’s even an under-the-sea theme going on upstairs. The fun décor certainly matches the menu too. The
restaurant has built up a reputation for its homecooked food and their authentic USA burgers are famous with the locals. For starters, we opt for Dusted Salt & Pepper Calamari and Nachos. The chefs – who you can see in the open kitchen downstairs – certainly don’t scrimp on their portion sizes. The Calamari is by far the biggest portion I’ve been served-up yet. But it doesn’t fall in flavour. The fish is seasoned and grilled to perfection served with a garlic mayo and a mixed leaf garnish.

The Nachos (normal portion ordered) stretch the full length of the plate too – topped with cheese, jalapenos, sour cream, salsa and guacamole. There’s also the choice of chilli or pulled pork on top or a sharing plate for those with the appetite. For main, we opt for the ‘Elvis Burger’ – recommended by the waitress – and the chicken fajitas. Swanky Frank’s flame-grilled burgers are hand-made using locally sourced prime beef and are cooked medium to ensure diners experience the full flavour of the quality meat. Elvis consists of a 6oz beef burger seasoned and topped with bacon, Montary Jack cheese, hash browns and sweet chilli sauce or peanut butter. We go for the latter and it’s insanely good. The burger buns are made to a secret recipe by a local artisan baker and are served with either fries, a baked potato or a side salad. The fajitas arrived on a sizzling skillet. The chicken breast strips, fresh peppers and onions are pan fried to perfection, sautéed in Cajun spice, and accompanied by warm flour tortillas, guacamole, salsa and sour cream. The portions are huge but be sure to leave room for Swanky Frank’s indulgent desserts too! There’s a choice of USA inspired sweet treats or delicious Yorkshire ice-cream. We recommend the Oreo cookie bash – Oreo white chocolate cream between two dark layers of moist chocolate drenched cake served with vanilla ice-cream. It’s heavenly. The restaurant are also known for their home-made milkshakes made with fresh whole milk and ice cream. There’s six flavours to choose from. For two three-course meals with soft and alcoholic drinks, our bill came in at a very reasonable £50. But if you dine mid-week, then take advantage of Swanky Frank’s mid-week deal: Two courses for £11.95 Monday to Thursday evenings. Just ask to see the midweek deal menu. If you’re dining with the family at the weekend then kids eat free Saturday and Sunday midday to 4pm. It’s an affordable indulgence you need to try!

The best of British burgers Words : J essica F ogarty
Urban ¼ 1B Kelham Island, Sheffield (0114) 453 9239 www.urbanquarter.co Towering burgers tucked under mounds of meat in brioche buns; classic cocktails served in retro glass milk bottles; warm home-made doughnuts tucked in mesh baskets – my mouth melts at the dishes whizzing by us as we step in to Kelham Island’s latest kitchen, Urban ¼. T he venue has a cool, chic vibe – In keeping with its industrial surroundings. Décor is simplistic – exposed brickwork with reclaimed chandeliers compliment the spaciously arranged crafted wooden tables. It’s effortlessly stylish. The menu is simple too, but the ingredients are quality. Urban ¼ serves up only the best of British burgers – chicken, beef or veggie. That’s your lot. Build your own, try a special, then add a side – urban slaw, onion strings, rosemary chips, pickled vegetables or a mixed leaf salad. Burgers start from £7.50
up to £8.75. Feeling hungry? Add an extra beef patty for £3. I opted for the chicken burger served with rosemary chips and urban sauce (a secret recipe we’d love to get our hands on). My partner ordered the owner’s recommendation – the urban special. We watch them cook in the open kitchen and they arrive promptly. They’re juicy and the beef is cooked to a perfect pink – just how it should be. To wash it down, we ordered a refreshing Draught Stancill Pilsner – a locally brewed Sheffield lager (£4); and a Green City mocktail – cucumber, thyme, apple juice and lemonade (£3.50). The portions are manageable but leave a little room for dessert. I order what I suspect could be the healthier option – a toasted marshmallow (£2.50). I was wrong. This giant mallow with an Oreo crumb is over-spilling on the slate plate it arrives on. My partner ordered the jam doughnut (£2.50) – warm, soft, coated in a crunchy sugar and filled with homemade jam. A bold statement, but Urban Quarter could well be the best place for burgers in Sheffield! We’ll be back soon!

Feel-good fresh food Summer menu launch at Brocco Kitchen Words: J essica F ogarty They’re always seasonal, a little bit Scandinavian and unmistakably Sheffield. Brocco believe that eating well is a balance: make healthy choices every day, and you can have your cake and eat it. Amen to that. Whatever time of day you eat at the Brocco table, you’ll be greeted by seasonal feasts and house specialities. Their nourishing, good-for-you food never compromises on flavour. Breakfasts are bounteous, lunches are luscious and suppers couldn’t be more sociable. We like the sound of this so we book a table for a Friday evening. The neighbourhood kitchen is much swankier than it sounds. Walk through the glass entrance and in to a modern and luxuriously fresh dining space. The whole place oozes charm with low-hanging bird cage chandeliers, candles and fresh spring flowers at every table. The former peace Guest House was last year transformed in to eight boutique bedrooms and The Brocco kitchen. Thought has gone in to every little detail at the venue; if it can be homemade, handpicked or personalised, it will be. Brocco source and prepare the food for their kitchen

Share the love on Sundays at Marco's Sheffield Sundays were made for sharing, according to the team at Marco’s New York Italian, as the Sheffield-based restaurant unveiled a new menu designed to ‘bring people together over good food’. The Marco Pierre White endorsed eatery at West Bar Green launched its new ‘Sunday Sharing’ menu at an exclusive tasting event at the restaurant on Sunday 17 May. Brimming with excited regular diners and VIP guests, the venue had a real buzz at the launch event – with the hashtag #SharingSunday trending on Twitter.
freshly and sustainably, using local suppliers wherever they can. The menu changes with the seasons and makes the most of what nature has to offer. The spring menu launched early April – feel-good, fresh food Monday-Friday 7.30am-8.30pm, Saturday 8.30am-8.30pm and Sunday 8.30am-6pm. The menu offers picnic platters, salads from the garden, small or big plates, pizzettes, plus specials including market fish of the day. To start, we ordered the sweetcorn and halloumi fritters to share from the small plates menu. The two mini fritters arrived accompanied with red pepper relish and coriander yogurt (£7). Fresh and flavoursome. We followed this with an 8oz rib-eye steak and cauliflower and cumin spread potato cake. The steak was served with whole roasted garlic (for the brave), confit tomatoes, watercress and parmesan salad (£20). If your stomach is rumbling, we’d recommend you order a side of triple-cooked chips to accompany (£3.50) – these are unbelievably good. The potato cake was equally impressive – served with avocado purée and pickled cucumber (£14). If you leave room for dessert, choose from rhubard crumble, lemon tart, burnt custard or chocolate and orange cheesecake (all £6). We ordered the crumble – served with a stem ginger ice-cream; and the cheesecake with candied orange. Delicious. Those feeling a little more peckish might be tempted by the selection of Yorkshire cheeses with thyme and pumpkin seed oatcakes (£7). Vegetarian, wheat or gluten-free? You’re amply catered for too.

The new menu, which will be served every Sunday from 12 – 6pm, includes a starter platter of tomato and basil bruschetta, BBQ chicken wings and calamari, followed by roasted meat joints such as gammon, chicken and beef with all the trimmings to share for main. For dessert, diners can indulge in decadent dishes such as sticky chocolate pudding and seasonal crumble. Portions are plentiful – so turn up ready to fill up your belly – and enjoy spending time with your friends and family as you share the Sunday delights. Andrea Booker, restaurant manager at Marco’s New York Italian, said: “We’re really excited about the launch of our new Sunday Sharing menu. “ “We’re an American-Italian restaurant and the notion of sharing good food with friends and family is a culture engrained in both of those countries. “With this new menu we’re combining that culture with a British favourite, bringing people together over good food – the much loved Sunday roast.” To view the menu online and book a table at Marco’s New York Italian, visitwww.marcossheffield.co.uk or call 0114 399 0990.

Whether you like mild or spice – you choose how hot you want your chicken from lemon and herb or mango and lime to medium, hot or extra hot. If you’ve left room for dessert choose from a choice of cakes and ice-creams. We recommend the Nata – a wantingly tempting Portuguese custard tart. Naughty but nice.

Spicy and oh so satisfying. If you’ve room for dessert – we recommend the Torta al rabarbaro (£7) – a rhubarb frangipane tart with poached rhubarb and vanilla ice cream. The national restaurant has relocated next door to the former La Tasca unit in the Oasis Dining Quarter. It now boasts a more open plan seating area – with no windows separating the restaurant from the central Oasis – plus new, more luxurious décor including a wall made entirely from coloured pots. The move also coincides with the launch of the new summer menu. New dishes include the Churrasco

For those counting the calories, we’d recommend you try the Chargrilled yellow pepper dressing – a new sweet and smoky fat-free dressing. The perfect accompaniment whether you’re eating chicken or a veggie choice. From breakfast ‘til bedtime…

Bills has landed in Sheffield! I’d spotted the sign going up at St Paul’s Place a few months back and having dined at their central London venue previously, I had high expectations for the latest northern addition to their restaurant portfolio. Bill's is a unique café-bistro and produce store created by a team of people who are passionate about food. Step inside the doors and you'll find fruit and exotic vegetables stacked up alongside an array of alluringly colourful homemade cakes, pizzas, quiches, pies and sandwiches. There is a wide choice of ever changing desserts and salads as well as made-to-order juices, smoothies, milkshakes, coffees and teas that are all available to eat in or take away. We were seated in the more formal restaurant area and the venue was almost full – an impressive start given Bills only opened its doors early summer. The restaurant is impressive – exposed Industrial lighting and metal furnishings contrast with chic chandeliers and retro armchairs. The venue is full of colour and charm. The menu matches the décor too – fun yet sophisticated dishes served from breakfast ‘til bedtime. The lunch and dinner menu consists of an array of appetisers including potato and rosemary bread, crispy crumbles halloumi and Bill’s giant green gordal olives (from £2.75 to £4.50); or go straight in for a starter with chicken in a jar and warm roast red onion and gruyere tart (from £4.95-£5.95). If there’s a group of you dining together though, we recommend you opt for a mezze board (£14.95) and try out a selection of Bill’s appetisers and starters together.
“Full of colour and charm” For main course, choose from burgers, fish, salads, pies, sandwiches and grills (£9.50-£18.50) but be sure to leave room for dessert as these stole the show on our visit. We recommend the lemon meringue pie cheesecake in a glass (£4.25-£6.95). It’s heavenly. There’s also a wide choice of beers, wines, an after dinner heritage port or teas and coffees. The founder of Bills set out to create something amazing, “with great food, a real buzz, and plenty to look at – a place for everyone”. We think he’s done just that.

Pure on Raw Words by: A nna Burdal

Enchiladas
Apricot Cheesecake
Raw veganism is currently exploding on social media such as Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. It’s becoming trendier to eat healthy, with raw vegan taking it to new extremes. Many celebrities such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Madonna, as well as YouTube sensation Freelee the banana girl, swear by it. Three years ago, Inga Dirziute from Lithuania, decided to open Pure on Raw, a raw vegan café in Shalesmoor. Her whole life she’d been a meat eater. She’d been brought up to cook everything, and her family would consume vast amounts of meats – for breakfast, lunch and dinner. She was a size 16, struggled with acne and felt sluggish and tired at all times. At the time she thought it was normal. It wasn’t until her son’s asthma started to get worse and the doctor started to give him steroids she thought “enough is enough.” She started researching different natural ways to make him better and she came across raw veganism. Inga wanted to expand her knowledge of nutrition and decided to move to
Atlanta, USA to study Raw Food Nutritional Science, Health Education Consultation and Raw Chef and Culinary Arts. When she moved back to Sheffield the first thing she did was to put the microwave and the toaster straight in the bin. Inga believes that people are becoming more aware of health and nutrition as more and more scientists are discovering the benefits of eating clean. “People are finally waking up and realising they’ve been abusing their bodies for years. It’s all about reeducating yourself,” she said. The menu at Pure on Raw is always changing with new specials every week. To start off we tried the sweet pepper boat, stuffed with a cashew nut “cheese” combined with celery, bell pepper, onion and spices. The flavour combination was just right, and it was hard to believe we were actually eating raw. The dish was bursting with taste - the sweetness in the pepper is complimented by sharp but fresh taste of celery. The curry and paprika add a little bit of warmth to the dish. For a main we chose the enchilada. This is compiled of a dehydrated spinach tortilla wrapped around a cashew nut and red pepper pâté, as well as marinated Mediterranean vegetables and grated carrot. The wrap, which is topped with a creamy garlic sauce and a bright yellow curry sauce, is served with a fresh and crunchy salad, clustered seeds and tangy vinaigrette. The portion size is
massive, so you get a lot for your money. To finish off we had an apricot cheese cake – this week’s flavour. It looked absolutely stunning, and it tasted like a regular cheese cake. The filling was fruity and very creamy, the nutty base adds a bit of crunch and the dried apricots add a bit more texture to the cheese filling. The plate was decorated in a lovely, rich chocolate sauce. We’ll definitely eat here again.

A Pole New Adventure
34
Words by: Ruchira S harma
For a long time, dancing has universally been acknowledged for its health benefits and pole fitness is no exception. As an increasingly popular method for ensuring strength and fitness, Sheffield’s own A Pole New Adventure promises the same for its regulars. Located on Carver Street, the building is discreetly situated between Pop World and Paris- a secret for those in the know. Once inside the studio however, the mirrored walls, lying feather boas and hanging silks contrastingly strike images of Moulin Rouge and boudoir glamour. The studio is a true paradox to anyone unfamiliar.
Gemma Hopkins, the founder of A Pole New Adventure and self-named ‘Pole Mummy’, is a surge of energy teaching classes. Using herself as an example when teaching, she promises that if she can do it, anyone can. As well as teaching newcomers, she boasts of competing in pole championships and bringing a troupe of her most promising students to compete too. She is unarguably talented and a pleasure to watch. Classes and attenders differ in ability. The Beginners Pole explicitly welcomes first timers, whereas Mixed Pole can see people who have trained for years alongside those who have for days. The structure is relaxed with attenders practising previous moves or learning new ones and using the time to perfect them and then move on. Classes range from £4 to £10 depending on the length and nature. There are a number of memberships and packages to suit everyone and make the most of the sessions attended. Advantages to pole fitness include similar cardio benefits to an aerobics class. In addition, core and overall body strength is the basis for success; many
moves require lifting whole bodies meaning regulars can boast of strength trainings comparable to bench pressing their own weight. It is often joked that after an initial session the next day will be killer for muscles. If this is anything to go by then pole fitness is a definite total body workout. Most importantly, classes are hardly aimed at women alone. With such strength and health benefits, men have much to gain from attending. With Gemma sparking such positive reviews including “amazing atmosphere, always feel welcome”, “great to try something out of our comfort zone” and “loved my first pole class”, there really is no reason to not consider this up and coming fitness trend.
AUSTIN MCINTOSH Words : J essica F ogarty Chic meets former pro footballer turned personal trainer, Austin McIntosh, to share his secrets to success and expert advice on how you can get fit in Sheffield this summer…
How did your career start? I originally set out to be a pro footballer but I had a bad injury and lost vision to my eyes. It's ten years this month (August) since it happened. I’ve had ups and downs but I couldn’t be happier right now. I took a soccer scholarship in the US where I gained a degree in finance and accounting and I’ve put my focus in to health and wellbeing – getting my mind and body to where I want it to be and helping others to do the same. I’ve been fitness instructing for almost a decade now and a massage therapist for three years.
How would you describe you philosophy about being fit and healthy?
How often do you train? I train five times per week for 60 to 90 minutes each session.
Every client is different. All I want to do is help people and make a difference. The biggest achievement is seeing a client’s confidence grow. At the start of a PT programme they’ll walk in looking at the ground but by the end, they’ll look up and hold a presence in the room. Changing your body shape and dropping a dress size is just the beginning.
What are your top tips for summer fitness? Make a plan and use every workout session as an opportunity. Be specific with your workouts, focus and understand how your own body functions. Are you looking for fat loss? Then eat at the right time of day and eat clean - lean meat, healthy fats including fish, good carbs, increase your fruit and veg intake and drink plenty of water. Are you looking for quick results for a holiday? You might want to consider juicing short-term.
So, how can people find out more?

Fitness has changed my life. Last year I set myself a challenge to become a more established PT and therapist. I’ve put everything in to it and my hard work has paid off. Not only has my body shape improved through training, my whole outlook on life has changed. I’ve had a massive confidence boost. At 26 I felt like a boy and now a year on, at 27, I feel like a man. I’m competing in a physique competition late summer too – something I never would have previously entered. I want to help others to feel as good as I do.
What is your biggest client challenge?
I offer personal training programmes at Pure Gym and massage therapy at The Barn Clinic. Get in touch!

How do you eat clean?
The Barn Clinic 288 Sharrow Lane, Sheffield, S11 8AS 0114 221 4780
A balance of good carbs, proteins and veg. Eating the right diet is crucial. Your focus should be 80% healthy eating, 20% exercise.
What’s a typical day? I wake up at 4.30am and my first client training session starts at 5.30am. Most people ask me how I do it – it's determination and feel-good music.
What inspires you? Happiness.
What’s your favourite quote or mantra you follow in life? “It’s not about how hard you hit: It’s about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. It’s how much you can take, and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done”. Rocky Balboa.

Meet Sarah White, permanent make-up artist and founder of Alive Health, Beauty & Relaxation… How did your permanent cosmetics career begin? I’ve been a trained beauty therapist for 18 years. I opened my first salon aged 21 and at 22 I gained my qualification in semi-permanent make-up. This is my specialist area of work. I had my own eyebrows tattooed and I loved them so much, I wanted to be able to do this for other people.
Why did you decide to open your salon in Bakewell? Alive Salon is based in an idyllic location. I also work at clinics in Sheffield on select days so customers in the city don’t need to travel to me – I can come to you.
Who is your target audience? Mainly women but some treatments are popular with men too. The salon welcomes clients who may have suffered hair loss, disfigurement or burns; athletes who sweat so want to give their face features without having to apply make-up; busy mums and professionals who want to save time; and many cancer patients have a treatment before they begin chemotherapy so it’s not such a big shock when they lose hair. We create a bespoke service for all of our customers needs.
What are the biggest worries when it comes to permanent cosmetics? Most people worry that a current style will go out of fashion but I only ever create a very natural look.
During a consultation we will discuss exactly what you want.
What are the benefits of permanent cosmetics? It can change your life. Most people comment that permanent cosmetics give them a new wave of confidence. Many clients return for a second or third treatment because they are so happy with the results. Most start with eyebrows then move on to eyeliner and lip blush. Having permanent cosmetics makes it easier to apply make-up on top too.
Treatment review: permanent cosmetics by Sarah White Words: J essica Fogarty How long do you spend applying your make-up each morning? I spent endless hours pencilling in my patchy brows each day as a result of years of over-plucking. But I couldn’t create the textured natural brow I desired no matter how much I invested in wax, powder and pencils. Having the perfect brow arch frames your face but there’s no denying it’s a time - consuming task creating the effect with make-up. That’s why many people are turning to permanent cosmetics. Permanent eyebrows are one of the most requested procedures – it’s a type of tattooing that uses pharmaceutical grade pigments which are applied to the second layer of your skin. This results in a natural shadow of colour giving the appearance of make-up. I’d researched many salons who offered the service, but I was most impressed with the work of Sarah White at Alive Salon. Every before and after picture on her website and Facebook page looked perfect. At the consultation, we discussed what colour, shape and effect I wanted. Sarah then pencilled this in with non-permanent colour and we adjusted
where necessary until I was happy with my perfect bespoke brow. The permanent make-up could then be applied. The consultation put me completely at ease. The Alive salon is peaceful and relaxing – secretly nestled within the Peak District at an old Mill House Cottage which has been restored and converted into a luxurious beauty salon and vitality studio. It’s the ideal place to be pampered. Alive has been designed as a balanced space, surrounded by nature and filled with the relaxing sound of the flowing river. My consultation took place in the upstairs private treatment room where we were undisturbed. The permanent make-up application was no more painful than having my eyebrows shaped. Despite my eyes watering from the light, the pain could only be compared to a bramble bush touching your skin. Using the Novaeau Contour advanced machine and soothing cream keeps the treatment very comfortable. Sarah told me that some clients regularly fall asleep during the treatment. The appointment took a total of two hours (including the consultation and application) and the treatment cost £395 – the price includes your first treatment and top-up treatment 4-6 weeks later. Your second appointment takes only one hour. Depending on your lifestyle, you may require a further top-up between 12-18 months after this. A top-up treatment is charged at £200. I was given an after care advice sheet to take home, a complimentary pot of healing balm to apply twice daily and Sarah’s business card just in case I had any further questions or needed advice. Sarah is very approachable and knowledgeable. I trusted her 100 per cent to apply the permanent cosmetics. She didn’t disappoint – my brows looked incredible. Four weeks on, I am almost fully healed and due back for my top-up treatment. The treated area took around seven days to settle and during this time was at its darkest. The area became flaky and dry but the healing balm helped to re-nourish. Sarah offers a complete range of holistic treatments at Alive. The dynamic team are dedicated to pampering you – leaving you nourished in body, mind and soul. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend a visit to Alive.

Words: J essica Fogarty Sheffield salon, Sistachic, has had a makeover! Sisters Kim and Robyn – joint business owners – have revamped the interior décor to give a more sophisticated sleek finish; boasting low hanging chandeliers, full length mirrored walls and a black and silver colour ways. The Handsworth salon – which specialises in fitting luxury hair extensions – opened its doors in spring last year and the demand has continued to grow. “We’ve been overwhelmed with the response over the past year” Kim told us. She and her sister, Robyn, run the salon together, alongside CLAWS @ Sistachic by Meg Taylor; Mac make-up by Emma Kendall and LVL lashes and semi-permanent make-up by Amour Beaute. “Initially we just learnt to weave so we could fit the extensions on each other” Kim told us. “But when friends and family saw the finished product, they all wanted to try it too. We got so busy we gave up our full-time jobs and found a premises.” Sistachic offers free in-salon consultations for anyone wanting to find out more. Kim told us: “We’ll show you exactly how the bonds and weaves are fitted, the colour matching process and talk you through maintenance. “We use our own specialist method of weaving which is unique to us. We don’t use plaits or glues to apply to the hair – just a simple yet effective method of application that is secure, comfortable and easily maintained.” Sistachic use only the finest 100 per cent human Virgin Remy hair weaves to give lovely thick, full and natural appearance that will last in your hair for months. There’s a variety of weave colours to choose from – you have the choice of a full head colour to perfectly
match your current shade, or add in highlights, an ombre finish or a brave shade of red, pink, purple or even blue. The fitting process takes around one hour 30 minutes, then all you need is a maintenance check every six to eight weeks to check the condition is healthy. If you need any repairs, just call in to the salon – no appointment necessary – and Robyn and Kim will fix for free. Weave prices start from £190 for 14 inches. Maintenance checks cost £35 and removal is £30. If you want to get your beauty fix while at the salon, visit CLAWS @ Sistachic who can create beautiful and unique nail enhancements, whilst always ensuring your natural nails stay healthy. Treatment prices start from £13. Amour Beaute, also located in the salon, offer LVL lashes with immediate results. They’re a more cost effective and lower maintenance alternative to eyelash extensions – lasting up to six weeks for £45.

Anti-ageing hair care Words : J essica F ogarty
We’re all familiar with anti-ageing creams for our face and body, but now you can prevent your hair from ageing too thanks to the new Chelsea famous Richard Ward anti-ageing argan collection. Consisting of a shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, mousse, styling spritz, elixir smoothing serum and hydrating treatment, The Chelsea Collection aims to rejuvenate and age-proof hair whilst boosting manageability. The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, is a well-known fan of Richard Ward’s with regular trips to his London salon, and now Sheffield shoppers can get their hand on the latest range in John Lewis.
#triedandtested My favourite product had to be the smoothing serum. Squirt just one pump in the palm of your hand then rub your hands together so the serum is evenly spread before smoothing gently over the ends of the hair and use sparingly over the length to smooth any stray hairs. My hair was left grease-free and shiny. The shampoo and conditioner also gave my hair added volume and thickness which was a bonus but regarding the anti-ageing benefit – only time will tell.
SARAH GRAY @ THE MAKEUP STUDIO 40
Words : J essica F ogarty
Chic meets makeup artist Sarah Gray, founder of The Makeup Studio… How did your career as a MUA begin? I studied art at college but at that time I wasn’t sure which direction to take career-wise. I’ve had a subscription to Vogue for as long as I can remember – fashion and photography have always been keen interests of mine – so I made the decision to take a course in media makeup and hair. I focused on beauty and editorial and began work first for Laura Mercier then Mac, on their department store counters. You get thrown in at the deep end there – it was more intensive than the college course and I got to work alongside some amazingly talented artists.
When was The Makeup Studio born? I set up on my own two years ago. Dronfield is where I grew up so it made sense to open the studio here. It’s easily accessible from Sheffield and Derbyshire but surprisingly, I get clients enquiring from much further afield. People regularly get in touch from Leeds and Bradford, but I’ve had enquiries from as far as Cornwall and The Lake District.
What is your specialist area? My preferred area of work is beauty photoshoots but my most popular bookings are for occasion makeup and brides.
What is the most requested make-up look? A classic smoky eye is the most requested style of makeup and more recently, contouring has become popular. Possibly surrounding the Kardashian hype – this is Kim’s signature style. Browns for the eyes and nudes for the lips is also a classic look people ask for.
What are the key beauty trends at the moment? Brows are becoming less prominent – in comparison to the heavy defined brows we’ve seen for the past couple of seasons. Soft contouring and lots of highlighter is also current.
What is the biggest makeup faux pas you see in Sheffield?
What is happening at The Makeup Studio, right now? We’re currently hosting group masterclasses where makeup enthusiasts can study one area in depth (£20pp for two hours). I also offer one-to-one makeup lessons (£40) where I apply makeup to one side of the face and the clients applies the other. Visit my website and social media pages to keep up to date with the latest events and offers.
A lot of people get brows wrong. They’re often pencilled in too solid at the front. Getting it right is an art though – I advise using an eyeshadow rather than a pencil as it’s much easier to blend and gives a more natural finish.
Special occasion makeup - £30 Just eyes - £20 Bridal makeup - £75 (travel to location up to two hours)
What are your top tips for holiday makeup?
The Makeup Studio, The Forge, Church Street, Dronfield, S18 1QX
Don’t wear too much foundation. Wear a tinted moisturiser for a more natural, beachy summer look. I always play-down makeup in summer – show off your freckles and tan! But if you really can’t bear, baring-all for the lived-in-look, use a highlighter for the high points on the face.
What is your most memorable makeover? Last Hallowe’en I did the makeup for Royal Blood. That was fun. I get a lot of calls around that time of year to do quirky makeovers.

Captured
Life
What motivates and inspires your work? I pride myself in making others happy, capturing beautiful images that capture someone’s true self. It is the ultimate honour for me.
What area of photography do you specialise in?
Words: J essica F ogarty
Chic meets Charlotte Heather-Cray, Sheffield photographer and founder of bespoke business Captured Life…
Vintage photography is my preferred area of work, but I have experience in most types. I always enjoy a challenge – from wedding and portrait to commercial.
Why does vintage photography interest you? When shooting a vintage inspired wedding, the couples are always willing to work with me to create more quirky shots. Most of my favourite images come from vintage shoots.
When did you first discover an interest in photography?
How would you describe your photographic style? My style is natural and relaxed. Whether it be at a wedding or during a corporate shoot, I will always try to blend in, capturing events as they happen and using my informal approach to create natural reactions from people. For me and my business I am not about the up sell of products. Instead, I am all about honesty and you will always know what you are getting and more importantly what it will cost. It’s simple really. I love taking and making beautiful photographs, I am passionate about what I do and I love people.
My first camera was given to me by my parents at the age of 6 on a family holiday in Norfolk, in the hope it would keep me entertained enough to keep me out of trouble. Little did they realise that that camera sparked a passion inside me which would lead me into the world of professional photography.
When did your hobby become a profession? My first real venture into the world of professional photography came completely out of the blue. A friend and fashion student had asked me to capture her final year fashion collection at the Newark Air Museum where we would be able to use actual planes as props. After that day, and the high I got from the whole experience, what was once a hobby became a longing for photography to actually become my profession.

Words by: Sharifah Alrabah
Designers have caught Saturday night fever in summer 2015, with one of the biggest cases of retro revival the catwalk has seen for a while. The 70’s has inspired many designer collections this season, with floral prints, flowing maxi dresses and patchwork suede being just a few of the trends popularly featured on the runway. The disco era has many styles and trends that defined the decade, some of which being bold and brave. Big collars, huge flares and long fringing are just a few of the best designs to come from the 70s. If you’re feeling daring, here are a few of the most frequently seen styles on this season’s catwalks.
Flowing maxi dresses This luxurious, loose and flowing dresses are perfect for long summer nights, but not so perfect for a British summer of light showers, so wear with caution! Wear with beach waves and earthy makeup for a look that’s truly bohemian chic. If you’re short, this trend could make you look even smaller, so wear with heels for the best result.
Patchwork suede Seen on Cara Delevingne, patchwork suede is sure to kick up a storm with the young, edgy and experimental. If you’re not as brave, try wearing a plain suede jacket – the fabric itself defines the 70s look and you’ll still be up to date. This cut and stick look is best suited to jackets and skirts, and can be worn with leather for a look that stands out.
Psychedelic florals
Tan Suedette Patchwork Across Body Bag, New
Look, £19.99
Black crochet maxi dress, Miss Selfridge, £39
With these trippy florals, the brighter the better. An alternative to all of you who are sick of wearing pretty floral prints in the summer, and want to mix it up a bit. This loud fashion is great for the festival season, and is sure to make you stand out from the crowd. Pair with rose tinted, circular shades for hippy chic with an edge.
Cropped flares
White Soled Tassle Loafer Blue, Burtons, £38
Flares have been given a makeover for the summer, creating a look that you’ll either love or hate. If you like the trend, grab a suede pair for extra style points. If you can get them high wasted, you’re onto a winner. The style can be made understated, with figure hugging tailored flares, or made audacious with giant oversized balloon flares.
Fringing
Satin Print Cullottes, Very.co.uk, £32
Fringing has been a staple trend for many seasons now, and shows no signs of going away. Past collections have used leather fringing to create an edgy, rock chick look. This spring summer, it’s all about tan and suede fringing, to give the ultimate 70s finish to any garment. Bags, jackets and skirts are the most popular things to receive the fringing treatment this season.

Meet design duo Steven Sheldon and Emma Hall – founders of House of SheldonHall (HOSH)
What inspires your designs?
How did HOSH begin?
Can we purchase from HOSH?
The brand name is a combination of our surnames - SheldonHall. We met at college where we studied art and design before then we went to university to study textiles. We weren’t your typical students – instead of going out partying we’d stay in working, drinking tea and eating cake. We’re not ashamed to say we were teacher’s pets but we were learning so much we didn’t want to stop. Steven went to work for Burberry for a while but the dream was always to own our own label. The creative direction is never yours.
Where is HOSH based? We work from Emma’s attic which her partner converted as a purpose built design studio. Being in such a close environment, arguments happen but they always help to make the best outfits.
What have been your biggest achievements to date? Steven applied for a design competition at Hand & Lock embroidery house and won the opportunity to work with them. We also had the opportunity to hold a photoshoot with NYC shoot for Tatler Magazine – which is part of the Condé Nast circuit. We’ve been
We look for a story. Having a focus gives our designs more depth. We also listen to music as inspiration.
We wouldn’t turn away a customer who wanted to purchase a design or have a bespoke item created but at the moment our approach is artistic not sales focused. It’s hard to put a price on our work. So much time goes in to each piece. One jacket takes approximately one week – most of our pieces are hand-finished.
Who would you like to see wear your designs? We’d love to see Daphne Guinness and Erin O’Conner in our designs.
What has been the reaction to the brand? The response has been international, we’ve received emails from stylists and professionals from all over the world expressing their admiration for what we’re doing and their desire to work with us.
Emma works in accounts but our bosses are very proud of our achievements. We put as much of our free time as possible in to HOSH.
Who is the face of HOSH? A friend of ours from Sheffield models most of our collections. She’s very natural and suits our designs perfectly. We’re proud to keep the brand here in the city
How do you plan to expand? Our goal is to have a bigger studio, employ staff, take our collections to the runway and launch menswear. At the moment our focus is womenswear. The queue to enter the fashion world can only be compared to a queue for a ride at Alton Towers. It’s a waiting game but we wouldn’t be able to stop now. House of SheldonHall Autumn Winter 2015 is now available to view via www.houseofsheldonhall.co.uk. @HOSHELDONHALL Facebook.com/House-of-SheldonHall Photo credits: Shona Munro – www.manquinaphotography.com
What do you think makes a successful brand? Good marketing and a good collection. We don’t look like typical designers but that gives shock impact. Steven works in a fabric store part time and

SHOP New York City is known to be one of the best shopping cities in the world! Are you ready to shop like it’s your job? From enormous department stores to specialist shopping streets – including designer, diamonds and flagship high street stores – you better leave some room in your suitcase! Madison Avenue – Madison Avenue is home to some of the most extravagant shops in the entire world. Passing through 57th to 59th streets, the avenue has become a shopping haven for NY tourists as well as local New Yorkers. Named after Madison Square, which was named in the honour of former President James Madison, this historical avenue embraces the diversity of New York by maintaining lots of character and enchantment. This ultra-deluxe strip—particularly in the high 60s—is home to the most luxurious designer boutiques, with Barneys New York as the anchor. Don’t be intimidated by the glamour of this shopper’s mile or any of the celebrities you’re likely to cross paths with; the luxury boutiques of Madison Avenue will be happy you stopped by if only to peruse their treasures, and maybe even discover a bargain in the racks. Top tip: Wear flats unless you are Victoria Beckham the second. Pounding the pavements and piling your shoulders with shopping bags is a struggle if you’re not prepared with comfy Converse.
count was applied at the till with no added tax. Win! Macy’s – In the middle of bustling Herald Square sits an icon: Macy’s NYC. Get your purse at the ready as you enter 11 floors of a shopper’s paradise – from beauty to shoes, accessories, clothing and food. Macy’s – the world’s largest department store is the premier name in not only today’s shopping world but in shopping history. What started out as a driedgoods store in 1858, has supplied the American people so often that the store itself is a part of the culture, especially in NYC. Top tip: If you’re investing in a NYC cityPASS (A ticket booklet for $114 that saves you 42% on admission to the 6 best attractions in New York City/ www. citypass.com) then you’ll get a 10% voucher to use in Macy’s and a second for Bloomingdale’s. Be sure not to rip the voucher out of the booklet or it is no longer valid – then show it to the cashier on payment. Bloomingdale’s - One of the most famous department stores in NYC, known for ‘the small / medium / large brown bag’ – Bloomingdale’s store is home to dozens of designer clothes and accessories you can only find in New York City. Taking up an entire block of real estate on the chic Upper East Side of Manhattan, Bloomingdale’s is every dedicated shopper’s dream. A NYC landmark since it opened in 1927, the Bloomingdale’s Department Store in Manhattan is one of the most popular places to shop in NYC. Top tip: Find out what all of the fuss is about and dine at Forty Carrots on Level Six of Bloomingdale’s. Choose from a light brunch, sandwiches, soups and burgers or a famous Forty Carrots ‘yogi’ – low fat plain frozen yogurt served on its own or in a smoothie. I’d recommend the American classic turkey burger and a freshly squeezed juice!
EAT Hard Rock Café – Bang in the heart of Times Square you’ll find the world famous Hard Rock Cafe! Rock your senses with tantalizing food and drinks and an awe-inspiring rock memorabilia collection. There’s no way you’ll miss it – queues are usually half a mile down Times Square, so try to head there off-peak and mid-week if you can. But it’s worth the wait… Priceless pieces from legends The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, Billy Joel, The Ramones and Elvis Presley grace the café walls along with more contemporary items including stage costumes worn by Madonna and Gwen Stefani. The Times Square café also features rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia from Hard Rock’s unmatched collection, including artists with New York ties, such as John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, The Ramones and Bruce Springsteen.
5th Avenue & Broadway - Upscale retailers who have rediscovered the architectural majesty of lower Fifth Avenue include Banana Republic, Victoria’s Secret, and Kenneth Cole. You won’t find many small-name shops along Fifth, so head down its side streets for something more unique.
As one of the city’s largest entertainment destinations, Hard Rock Café New York features a 708-seat restaurant, a recently opened 1,800 square-foot Rock Shop with authentic Hard Rock merchandise and a Hard Rock Live concert venue for performances and special events. Furthermore, the cafe boasts a unique outdoor space above the building’s historic marquee, where guests can host private parties amid the lights and excitement of Times Square.
Top tip: Look out for the NYC Topshop store – although the prices are in-line with the UK, the stock does differ. I picked up a couple of bargains in the half-price sale – only to discover a further 30% dis-
What to order: A burger and a cocktail is a must, then finish off with the brownie mountain! Your waistline may not thank you for the 1,800 dessert (recommended to share) but boy, its good!
NYC Ruby Tuesday – If you’re looking for a true NYC dining experience – head to Ruby Tuesday at Times Square! We visited for breakfast and indulged in a pancake stack lathered in syrup and bacon rashers plus a side of oatmeal bake. Probably the only healthy option on there but be warned – portion sizes are hefty! Juice re-fills are free and food prices are fairly reasonable too. Well worth a visit! Black Iron burger and beer co – Nestled in Manhattan’s East Village and Midtown West, the Black Iron Burger offers up delicious all natural, lifetime antibiotic and hormones free burgers, fries, onion rings and more for hungry New Yorkers and tourists alike. This New York burger joint is a great place to hang out with friends and family while enjoying a great meal and listening to a fantastic mix of music. Relax with cosy and rustic décor and enjoy a unique hamburger cooked on a Keating Miracle griddle. The smooth chrome surface locks flavour and freshness in. Open for late night diners, this East Village burger restaurant also has ten draft craft beers on tap to wash down the burgers. Also try the malted Haagen -Dazs ice cream milkshakes which are insanely good. Bill’s – If you’re heading to the Rockefeller Centre then stop off for a bite to eat at Bill’s. The biggest standalone burger joint in America, Bill’s at Rockefeller Centre serves American fare and juicy burgers. CNN have ranked Bill’s in the ‘Top 10 burgers’ in America and we have to agree! Bill’s began in New York City back in 2009, becoming an instant hit with both burger junkies and locals alike. With 400 seats, Bill’s serves up burgers and shakes made fresh daily.

SEE STOMP @ Broadway – A trip to New York would not be complete without booking a show on Broadway. Matchboxes, brooms, garbage cans, Zippo lighters and more fill the stage with energizing beats at STOMP, the inventive and invigorating stage show that’s dance, music and theatrical performance blended together in one electrifying rhythm. Top of the Rock – Discover Top of the Rock Observation Deck and experience breath-taking views of New York City and beyond. $30 Empire State viewing platform – An icon of New York City since 1931, Empire State Building has been featured in thousands of movies and welcomes visitors from all over the world. For the better part of a century, visitors to the New York have headed straight to the Empire State Building for the thrill of a lifetime: the journey aloft to its fabled Observatory nearly a quarter of a mile above Fifth Avenue. $32 9/11 Memorial and Museum – The National September 11 Memorial & Museum, located at the World Trade Center, honours the 2,983 people killed in the attacks of September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993. $24 Ellis Island – Take a ferry ride to visit the Statue of Liberty National Monument and the Ellis Island Immigration Museum, both only a short ride from Battery Park. $18
NYC TOP TRAVEL TIPS
Grab a NYC CITY pass – it’ll save you dollars if you plan to visit the main NYC attractions – www.nycgo.com Designer discounts – Ask for ‘tourist discount’ – if a sales assistant hears your English accent you’ll likely be offered ten per cent off a purchase.
Don’t forget to tip – A 15 to 20 per cent tip is not included but is expected in the USA. Waiters' wages are usually less to account for tips. Tax is applied at the till – don’t be shocked if you have an unexpected tax amount added to your payment. This is ten per cent in most American stores.
End of stay hotel bill – You’ll be expected to pay a city tax at most American hotels. This is usually $3.50 per night. Suitcase storage – if you can’t get a late check out then expect to pay around $5 per suitcase to store your luggage.

IS THE HOME OFFICE WHERE THE HEART IS? Whether you already have a home office to spruce or if the idea of running your empire in your pyjamas a few days a week appeals to you, Nest.co.uk have the picks to make your working ‘nest’ the best.

Never one to miss a trend the Nest.co.uk team spotted this spark when they visited The Stockholm Furniture Fair earlier this year. Toni Sanderson, Marketing Director at Nest.co.uk explains:“Stockholm is a must-visit in the furniture industry. It’s one of the biggest trade fairs in the world for Scandinavian furniture and Scandinavian manufacturers are some of our biggest selling brands. “The home office was undoubtedly popular this year and Nest.co.uk couldn’t agree more with that. I think it was inevitable, particularly thanks to continued advances in technology meaning that working from home is much more commonplace nowadays and the show reflected that.” If you are just a little bit coo-coo over the range available at Nest.co.uk, then why not visit their Sheffield showroom based just off the Parkway? Transforming their sheds into the hottest room in the home. More than 20 million people in the UK own a shed, yet most sit at the bottom of the garden neglected, underused and storing nothing but lawn mowers and bric-a-brac. In a climate in which very few people can afford to sell up and move house, more and more are turning to this valuable outdoor space; the garden shed. A growing trend in recent years, British homeowners have begun to approach their sheds with the same care and attention as they do their homes. This is
a move that has seen many a humble garden shed transformed into a dynamic, personal and practical space. Here, Nest.co.uk talks about the top items to transform a once neglected shed into a homely office, a wonderful workshop or simply a relaxing retreat:

HEADING OUTDOORS FOR THE LATEST INTERIOR TREND
Ashlee Sanderson, Retail Sales Consultant at Nest. co.uk, said: “Colour, versatility and durability definitely seem to be the factors of preference when it comes to furnishing those special outside extensions. “Hard-wearing rugs like the Nani Marquina Tatami Rug (£945) and the ever practical Vitra Uten.Silo shelving units (£278) have been particularly popular in the lead up to summer. I think this is down to how versatile these products are, with the shelving being ideal for books, stationary, decorative items, tools or makeup. Our customers are becoming increasingly clever at adapting these outdoor spaces into comfortable places for work or relaxation. “

The Biz with New Businesses Wosskow Brown Solicitors Partner and Head of Corporate Commercial, Kiley Tan, talks about what you need when setting up a new business. Setting up a business is not rocket science but it can be difficult for the unprepared. I am often asked about how to set up a business. The reality is that setting up a business is extremely easy as the formalities are very few. However, the real trick is knowing who to turn to for help. No business is an island. A business requires support not just from its suppliers and customers, who are very important, but also from trusted professional advisers who are there as a sounding board and for the important decisions.
bank manager is the first. Knowing that you have a bank manager who understands your business and your requirements is very important. The bank manager would of course have to deal with things such as loans to the business, if required, and would have a wealth of experience having dealt with other businesses. The second person in every business person’s speed dial should be an accountant. Of course, keeping yourself up to date with tax is essential especially if the business is registered for VAT. However, an accountant is also useful in guiding the business in budgeting and forecasting its income over a period of time.
Last but not least is a solicitor. Many businesses tend to avoid solicitors due to the perception that they are expensive or out of touch. I agree that some are (!) but there are many solicitors who are down to earth and inexpensive. Speak to them and ask them questions and see who gives you the answers that you need to hear rather than what you want to hear. At Wosskow Brown, our Corporate Commercial team are approachable and business friendly. Our ethos is to provide legal advice that make business sense. Try us, you may be surprised. If you are interested in starting a business or need help in your existing business, pick up the phone and give us a call on 0114 256 6577

I’m staying in the UK this year, I think I’m going to meet up with some of my old friends in London.
This year I’m taking my little girl to Tenerife, because it’s further South so it’s really sunny and hot!
I’m not going on holiday this year, because finances won’t allow! I think I’m just going to soak up the sun in Sheffield.

I’m heading off to Amsterdam. It’s always good fun and it’s not too expensive either.

A Hillsborough runner has set himself the ultimate challenge of running 2,015 miles in 2015 - all in aid of Cavendish Cancer Care. Staunch Wednesdayite, Mark Green, 45, chose to support the Sheffield charity in memory of a friend’s mum, who used the service before she passed away. Cavendish Cancer Care helps cancer patients and their families come to terms with the illness by supporting them with complementary therapies. Mark said: “I only began running last year, but I wanted to do a bit of good with it. I’m currently on
1060 miles and even though I’ve had quite a bad knee injury over the past few weeks, I’m trying to keep going.” Mark has to run an average of 5.5 miles a day to reach his goal, and he is now over halfway towards his target, which he hopes to achieve in December. He said his favourite run so far has been one over the Snake Pass in the Peak District in June: “The road was closed, so It was a bit eerie, but also absolutely beautiful.” Along with his brother, Mark will also be taking part in Cavendish’s Sheffield Together 10k on November 15th. The run, which has both 5k and 10k routes, is suitable for runners of all experiences, and you can even bring your dog with you! Registration is open at www.cavcare.org.uk /sheffieldtogether.
