I’ve had medical ultrasound before but I still wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the LoveLipo process. I was surprised at how relaxing the treatment was, and how lovely the staff were. It’s a really enjoyable, relaxing experience. After just six sessions of LoveLipo on my hips/tops of thighs I lost two and a half inches and my ‘saddlebags’ have reduced so much, that I’m now wearing size 12 trousers instead of 16. This treatment has been like a miracle I’m so impressed with the results that I’m starting another course of treatments on my stomach - so watch this space!

Ladies, Look good and feel great this Summer! Read Jane’s Story... BEFORE
‘‘
After many years of struggling with my weight I decided it was time to do something about it. I wanted to do some kind of exercise but wasn’t sure what I wanted to do as I had joined a gym in the past and it wasn’t for me. I had passed Ladyzone on Middlewood Road many times but never called in as I thought it would be just like any other gym. How wrong was I!!! I decided I would call in to see what it was all about and I was shown round and made to felt at ease. I made an appointment there and then for my induction. On the day of my induction, I was greeted by a friendly member of staff who immediately made me feel at ease.
AFTER
After doing the necessary measurements which were done professionally and without embarrassment I was taken round each piece of equipment to run though my programme which has been designed for me as an individual. Unlike large mixed gyms Ladyzone is for women only and is small and friendly. You don’t feel out of place or stared at. I lost 3st in three months, 6st in six months, 7st in seven months, and now after one year I have lost 8.5st! I have realised the importance of exercise, which I am now passing down to my children, so they too can lead a healthy lifestyle. The buzz you get from exercising really is amazing and I thoroughly enjoy going to Ladyzone. Since I joined, I have gained more confidence and self-esteem. I have not felt this good for a very long time, in fact I recently went swimming for the first time in 8 years!!! I never thought I would ever do that again. This is all thanks to Ladyzone and the help and encouragement that I have received since joining. If you are thinking of joining a gym think Ladyzone. I highly recommend it.

Rochelle Chic meets
Hum
The Saturdays star, Rochelle Humes.
>> She’s one fifth of the UK’s biggest girl band; wife to former JLS band member Marvin Humes; a new mum; presenter on This Morning and fashion designer for online clothing retailer, Very. There’s no stopping 25 year old Essex born singer Rochelle Humes. “We’ve released our Greatest Hits album but it’s not the end for The Saturdays” confirms Rochelle. “Everyone thinks a Greatest Hits album and tour is the end of the road for a band; but we promise we’ll be back. In fact we’re straight back in the studio recording our fifth studio album after the tour.” The five piece multimillion selling pop group are bucking the trend by releasing the collection whilst at the height of their career. The milestone album, set for release on August 11, will follow with a UK tour including a date at Sheffield City Hall on September 10. “If we’d waited any longer we would have had too many tracks for the album” Rochelle adds. “We’re on our eighteenth single now so it seemed like the perfect time to celebrate our successes so far. It’s far from a farewell. “We’re still in the planning stages at the moment, but I can reveal the show will feature lots of costume changes and upbeat tempo tracks so get ready to party when we visit Sheffield. “Rehearsals begin in August – it will be an intense month, working every day.” Rochelle’s music career began 13 years ago when CBBC launched the S Club Search.
The management company who created 90’s pop band S Club 7, held auditions for S Club Juniors and 12-year old Rochelle was chosen along with The Saturday’s bandmate Frankie Sandford. The teen band had six strong years in the charts before Rochelle and Frankie left to join The Saturday’s with the addition of Vanessa White, Una Healy and Mollie King. “I do feel like I’ve achieved a lot in my 25 years. The most memorable moments for me were touring for the first time with The Saturday’s and

reaching the number one spot with our single ‘What About Us’. “I think our success is down to our relationship. It doesn’t matter how hard you work, it’s all about the chemistry. If you don’t get on, it’s not going to work. “We met new girl group Neon Jungle recently and they have what it takes. They’re really young and hungry for it too, I’d say they are the ones to watch. They could be the next big girl band.” Rochelle married JLS singer, Marvin Humes in 2012 and last year their first daughter, Alaia-Mai was born. “Being in a girl band is certainly more of a
- 10 -
challenge now three of us are mums” says Rochelle. “Una, Frankie and I are all working mums. Some days I find it a challenge but I have the advantage of being able to take her to work with me a lot of the time. “My mum brought me up on her own, so I always planned on taking care of Alaia-Mai myself. I try to spend as much time with her as possible. “We still commit the time necessary to the band as we’re conscious we don’t want to dessert our fans, but when I meet up with the band, we all bring our children with us now. “This summer most of us are enjoying time at home and holidaying with family before tour rehearsals start next month. Mollie is constantly travelling between the UK and LA because her boyfriend lives there. Right now is the calm before the storm.” As well as a successful music career, Rochelle is following in the footsteps of her husband and trying her hand at presenting. “Marvin and I present on This Morning on the odd Friday. I love it. In fact over the school summer holidays we’ll be on the show every Friday. “I’ve also been busy working with Very for the launch of my first fashion collection.” Alongside celebrity designers Fearne Cotton, Colleen Rooney and Myleene Klass, Rochelle’s 19-piece collection features floral frocks and patterned coords, in reflection of The Saturdays’ singer’s own personal style. “It’s had a great reaction so far – in fact it completely sold out in June – but we’re back in stock now. “I’ve been lucky to have such exciting opportunities come my way and I’m just enjoying life.”

Marco Pierre White Words: Jessic a Fogarty
C
elebrity chef Marco Pierre White celebrated the success of his first Yorkshire venture, Marco’s New York Italian, Sheffield, by hosting a special dining event for customers. The king of the kitchen gave customers the chance to join him to sample the new menu, and took the time to personally meet each diner and sign an apron for them to take away. Born in Leeds, the 52 year old grew up on a
council estate in the city, before moving south to launch his cooking career in his mid-20s. He has been dubbed the first UK celebrity chef and the youngest chef ever to have been awarded three Michellin Stars. He has trained chefs such as Gordon Ramsay and Curtis Stone and now owns a chain of restaurants across the UK. Chic meets Marco Pierre White to find out why he’s bringing a taste of Italy to Sheffield‌ - 14 -
“I’m not big on snobbery – I’m a Yorkshireman.”
Welcome to Sheffield. Have you spent much time in the city? My first memory of Sheffield is going to see the manager at Yorkshire Bank on Fargate in 1987. His name was Mr Fisher and he was a very nice man. He gave me a loan of £65k to start my business. Wow, you have a good memory! Tell us about your latest restaurant, Marco’s in Sheffield? I like simple and affordable things. People go out to have a good time and to have a night out so I think you need to create a venue that caters for these people and occasions – whether you’re falling in love, celebrating a birthday, engagement or just getting a bite to eat on your way home. I like eating out in a smart/causal environment – where I’m sitting is most important to me, if I don’t feel comfortable I won’t go back. How would you describe the Marco’s menu? It’s straight forward and classical. It’s not trying to be Michelin Star. If you try and be Michelin Star then the price comes with it and you scare people off. They’ll go in once a year and I’d rather they came once a month. Do you have a personal favourite dish on the menu? No. I’m quite boring with food. I eat the same dish everyday if I like it. I don’t like fluffy food and I don’t like small portions. I get bored going to those places who give you 18 courses and ask you if you enjoyed each course. I don’t want to know the waiter, I want to know my guests. I like simplicity like a ham sandwich with English mustard. I’ve eaten that five days running. You’ve achieved so much in your career – what has been the most memorable moment? Getting my bank loan in Sheffield, aged 25.
You’re the brand ambassador for Knoor Stock Pot. How did this collaboration come about? I’ve used Knoor for years. It is without question a necessity for domestic kitchens and it has its place in the professional kitchen too. I use Knoor instead of salt. If I’m braising a steak, I’ll use a Knoor stock cube as it creates a better flavour. It’s about removing the snobbery and being honest. I’m not big on snobbery – I’m a Yorkshireman.
“I like romance. If something isn’t romantic, I’m not interested.”
Will you ever return to live in Yorkshire? I moved from Leeds 36 years ago and I’m a very different person now. We’re all chameleons – we can’t help but absorb our surroundings and become products of them. I see myself as a Southerner but my roots are still that of a northerner. Where do you like to dine out? Home. I like eating at home. I’m always in the kitchen. I rarely cook for work these days so I cook most weekends when I’m home. It doesn’t take me long to make dinner and I find cooking therapeutic. If you’re not cooking, what are you working on? I’m doing a lot of travelling. In the past three
- 15 -
months I’ve been to New York, Melbourne, Norway, Ibiza and Lisbon. All business except Ibiza; that was a long weekend away with my girlfriend. I’m also working on a project in the Norfolk Broads and a very exciting project in Wiltshire. It’s a beautifully romantic project but I can’t reveal any more information just yet. I like romance. If something isn’t romantic, I’m not interested. Will you be back on our TV screens soon? I have done some filming for TV but that bores me. TV work is tedious – I don’t find it stimulating, I’m just not made for it. I never swear, I never shout and I’m always well-mannered on TV. I’m not someone who wants to make a career out of TV. Once a year is enough for me. Was becoming a world famous chef always the career path you dreamed of? I like making things. That’s what I’ve always wanted to do. Marco’s New York Italian is located next to the new Hampton by Hilton hotel on West Bar Green – the former Police Station. To book a table call 0114 399 0990 or visit www.marcossheffield.co.uk.

T
riple Brit Award-winning band, Kaiser Chiefs, took to the stage at Doncaster Racecourse to entertain a crowd of more than 17,000 race-goers. The critically acclaimed Leedsbased band, best known for the anthemic top ten hit I Predict A Riot, and the number one hit single Ruby, didn’t disappoint the thousands of South Yorkshire fans who bounced up and down to a good mix of old favourites and new releases. The outdoor stage was surrounded by big screens enabling fans to view the performance from every enclosure and the crowd didn’t let the typical British summer showers dampen their spirits. Lead singer, Ricky Wilson, best known for his recent appearance as a judge on BBC talent show, The Voice, received an abundance of screams from females in the audience. He was joined on stage by guitarist Andrew ‘Whitey’ White, bassist Simon Rix, keyboardist Nick ‘Peanut’ Baines and current drummer Vijay Mistry. Last year Doncaster Racecourse attracted some 40,000 people to its summer concerts which saw The Saturdays, Lawson, Ronan Keating and Scouting for Girls take to the stage over three events. Legendary rockers Status Quo performed live after racing on Saturday May 17 and James Blunt will take to the stage on Saturday August 16.
West Side Story Arguably one of the most popular stage musicals in the world, West Side Story is back on tour around the UK, which includes a 16 show stint at Sheffield`s Lyceum. From the first note, the tension between the White American Jets and the Puerto Rican Sharks is imminent and the high action choreography – leaps, rolls and fighting – sets the tone for a powerful rivalry between the two gangs and their aversion of each other. The ensemble singing is near perfect with excellent casting of voices that both compliment and contrast to each other, giving it the raw `streets-of-New-York`, edgy feeling. This rawness is balanced by lyrical episodes between Tony and Maria, the Romeo and Juliet figures carried in this 1950s recreation of Shakespeare’s most celebrated love story. The lover’s encounters are moving as you feel their attachment which is perfectly played out by Katie Hall (Maria). What makes the production so enjoyable is the contrasts throughout. While the story of forbidden lovers, gang rivalry and death is solemn, their mood

lightening episodes such as the Jet’s mockery of the police in ‘Gee Officer Krupke’, subtly placed after the tragedy which concludes the first act and other comical song and dance routines including ‘America’ and ‘I Feel Pretty’ provides more fun to the show, showcasing likeable characters from both gangs. Other notable characters are the feisty Puerto Rican beauty Anita (Djalenga Scott) and the juvenile Jet Baby John (Fraser Fraser). Still following Leonard Bernstein’s musical score, Stephen Sondheim’s lyrics and Jerome Robbin’s original choreography, West Side Story has stood the test of time to become a classic musical in its own right and an inspirational model for musicals to come since its first opening in 1957. High energy dance and timeless vocals make West Side Story the perfect musical and an enjoyable production for any avid theatre goer. Don’t expect any static routines with bundles of dialogue – this musical is all about the choreography and the score. Words: C atherine Taylor

“I haven’t been home since August 2013”
Blunt - 20 -
Chic meets platinum selling singer, James Blunt. He rose to fame in 2005 with the release of his platinum selling debut album Back to Bedlam before achieving worldwide fame with the singles You’re Beautiful and Goodbye My Lover. He’s sold 17 million albums and 20 million singles worldwide, has a string of Brit Awards and endless international awards to his name, and now he’s back on the music scene with his fourth studio album, Moon Landing, and will be performing alongside his band at Doncaster racecourse this summer. We’re excited to welcome you to Doncaster Racecourse this August. Have you spent much time in South Yorkshire previously? It will be nice to return to the UK. I’ve been on a great but very long tour. I started out in China for New Year and I haven’t stopped yet, seven months later. I lived five miles north of York for a while too so I’m pretty familiar with the South Yorkshire area. And my uncle worked for The Jockey Club so I’ve grown up visiting racecourses. I have a family of horse lovers. What should we expect from your performance? A mix of old and new?
Looking at your upcoming show schedule for the summer, it’s pretty non-stop. Do you have time to take a break? I’m always non-stop. I haven’t been home since August 2013. I’m constantly travelling for work so I don’t want to travel more for holidays. You served in the army for six years, but was singing always your dream career? My Dad served in the Army so I naturally followed in his footsteps. I grew up in an Army camp in Cyprus then I travelled to Kosovo, Canada and London. I picked up a guitar and wrote my first song age 14. Music was always a dream for me. I always wanted the freedom of touring with my music. You became friends with Prince Harry during your time in the armed forces, do you still keep in touch?
“I’ve been practicing all over the world for my performance at Doncaster”
Yes, we still speak occasionally but we’re both so busy, I don’t see him very often. He’s a great guy though. You earned your pilots licence age 16 – do you still fly? I’m usually in the back of a plane asleep these days, but I can fly. It’s such an adrenaline rush. You live in Ibiza now, how’s life?
Definitely. I have my five piece band with me and I’ll be performing old and new. I’ve been practicing all over the world for my performance at Doncaster.
Life is good in Ibiza when I’m actually there. Is it easier for you to get out and about in Ibiza without being papped?
Do you ever tire of requests for ‘You’re Beautiful’? I wouldn’t dream of it. That song got me to where I am now. Tell us about your latest album ‘Moonlanding’ – how does it compare to your previous music? It’s been a journey for me. I started with an innocent, naïve album, then my music turned more explosive and reactionary but Moonlanding is genuine. I’ve opened up and stripped back. It’s an album about dreams, longing and first loves.
You get press wherever you go, but it’s not as intense I suppose. You’ve had a lot of media attention for your witty replies to comments on Twitter. Do you think it’s important for an artiste to manage their own account? And why do you take the time to reply? People love expressing their opinions on Twitter. If someone wants to insult me, I’ll insult them back. It’s only fair. You can’t take yourself too seriously in this world. I have fun with it too. It’s a great way to engage with my fans.

Sex Tape RELEASED 3rd September
Funny man Jason Segel and rom-com queen Cameron Diaz co-star as married couple Jay and Annie in the outrageous new comedy, Sex Tape. When they wake up to find their newly filmed sex tape has gone missing, panic quickly ensues, leading to a frantic search to discover it had been sent to all of their friends and colleagues. Directed by the same guy ( Jake Kasdan) who brought the world Bad Teachers, this will not be for the faint hearted. Expect lots of crude jokes, awkward moments and plenty of nudity in this raunchy laugh riot.
Magic in the Moonlight RELEASED 19th September
Sin City: A Dame to Die For RELEASED 25th August
Woody Allen returns to the director’s chair with new comedy-drama, Magic in the Moonlight, following last year’s critically acclaimed and Oscar nominated hit, Blue Jasmine. Set in 1920’s France, the film stars the ever lovable Colin Firth as a cynical magician tasked with debunking the work of a popular spiritualist, played by Allen’s latest muse, Emma Stone. Romance inevitably ensues in what seems a much more light hearted affair than that of the over-bearing Blue Jasmine. Also starring Jackie Weaver, Marcia Gay and Eileen Atkins, Allen’s latest cinematic offering is sure to appeal to the all the old fashioned romantics out there.
Sin City: A Dame to Die For is the highly anticipated sequel to the 2005 hit, Sin City. Based on the popular book series of the same name, the follow-up film sees the returning Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis and Clive Owen join forces with the likes of Eva Green, Juno Temple and Joseph Gordon-Levitt to form an impressive ensemble cast in a high-action film that sees the town’s most fierce citizens cross paths with some of its more reviled inhabitants. We can only hope that A Dame to Die For can live up to the originals high standards that delivered big on both the visuals and action, in what is guaranteed to be a very violent affair.
Million Dollar Arm
Wish I Was Here RELEASED 19th September
RELEASED 29th August
Disney’s latest offering is sports drama a Million Dollar Arm, starring Mad Men’s John Hamm and the Oscar winning Alan Arkin. Directed by Lars and the Real Girl’s Craig Gillespie, this feel-good film follows sports agent J.B. Bernstein (Hamm) as he stages a rather unconventional player recruitment strategy to get talented Indian cricket players to compete in Major League Baseball. Unsurprisingly he finds a couple of potential stars in the shape of Rinku Singh (Suraj Sharma) and Dinesh Patel (Madhur Mittal), in what could well be one of the most uplifting films of the year. - 22 -
Scrubs star Zach Braff directs and stars in the quirky comedy-drama, Wish I Was Here. Partially financed through funding site Kickstarter, the story follows Aidan Bloom (Braff), a struggling actor heading agonisingly closer to middle age, who is going through somewhat of an identity crisis. In home schooling his kids, Bloom slowly begins to rediscover his love of life and a sense of purpose. The film, which also stars the Oscar nominated Kate Hudson, The Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parson and Josh Gad, it is sure to deliver the laughs (and possibly a few tears) in Braff ’s usual quirky fashion.

Sail Away Meadowhall’s shopping and beauty adviser, Bethanie Lunn, shares her High Street round-up of how to bring a little seaside style into your life…
I’m currently obsessed with all things nautical and although I’m still always in Sheffield (it’s hard to stay away), I live by the sea and I’m blessed to have sea views from my apartment. I’m therefore naturally drawn to anything related to the sea and beach so, in order to share a little inspiration with you, here’s my High Street round up of how to bring a little seaside style into your life. Nautical style is an easy one to achieve right since the stores are brimming with separates that capture that easy, chic style at home and in your wardrobe. From bold stripes and elegant white tailored trousers to anchor and rope detailing or burning lanterns, the nautical theme is a classic, never-goes-out-of-style fashion trend. Our very own Kate Middleton is a fan of this look too as you always look effortlessly polished. I love the accessories Paperchase, Debenhams and Accessorize have right now. In fact, Paperchase have tons of nautical pieces. Their Anchors Ahoy range includes bags and notebooks which look very chic. Next has an entire range of nautical-inspired homeware too from throw cushions to wall plaques that help bring the outside, in.
Accessorize Hit The Beach Bikini Bag, £10
Debenhams Blue Lantern, £15 Primark Nautical Stripe Strappy Playsuit, £7
Next Heart Shell Cushion, £12
Paperchase Leather Journal, £15
Fernado Trousers, £89 by Damsel in a Dress, available exclusively at House of Fraser, Meadowhall
Phase Eight Stripe Beach Tunic, £69
For cruise-worthy separates, Damsel is a Dress is brand new and exclusive to House of Fraser, Meadowhall including flattering summer dresses, tailored trousers and versatile tunics and tops. The collection is full of colour with some key nautical pieces so check it out. Phase Eight is also a hit for this look but if you’re on a budget, head to good ‘ole Primark for some anchor-heavy accessories and fun stripy playsuits. Bethanie x

ANDY JORDAN
While the rest of the Made in Chelsea cast jet off to NYC to film the upcoming eighth season of the series, Andy Jordan has stayed behind in the UK. Not without reason, though. The 24-year old is busy touring the country and promoting his new EP, “Geography”. Chic caught up with the broker-turned-actorturned-musician after his warm-up gig in Sheffield. Hi Andy, you’ve just finished your gig in Sheffield, how did it go? I really enjoyed it! It was the first time we played “Geography” live, which was really fun. People seem to like it. It’s one of those things, when a song becomes a single, you end up playing it all the time, and then you start not liking it anymore. But not with “Geography”, I actually really enjoyed playing it tonight. You dedicated one of the songs tonight to your grandmother. Does she watch Made in Chelsea? She does! She gets really involved, sometimes she loves it, sometimes she hates it. We’re very close, I used to live with her. At what point in your life did you decide to pursue a career in music? I taught myself how to play the guitar when I was at university. Then we did like a piss-take music video with Made in Chelsea, and the guy who was producing the sound said I should come
back. I had actually already written some stuff then, so I went back and recorded it.
She probably hasn’t heard it though, she lives in America.
I’ve always loved music but never really had the confidence to perform. I’ve always stuck to singing in my bedroom, too nervous to get out there and sing, even to my family.
Are all of your songs autobiographical? It’s a mixture, there are some songs that are about past relationships. I also have a lot of issues with people who go to work every day and then complain all the time about how much they hate their job. I’m always like “well, then quit!” and they don’t. So I write about stuff like that. You’ve got to create your own way in life and do what you want to do.
You seem very confident on stage though. I’m getting better. Last winter, when I first started playing live, I was pretty nervous. Now I feel more at home. I think it comes with playing your own music. On my last tour, half of the set list was covers, and I wasn’t very good at memorizing other people’s lyrics... which is why I always mix them up when I do a cover (laughs). How long have you been working on your EP, “Geography”? I started working on it in January of this year, and everything was pretty much finalized by the end of February. We actually recorded everything in just four days. “Geography” was co-written with a girl called Caroline, who I had never met before. When we arrived in the studio, we chatted a bit and realized we had both had that problem of a relationship across borders, so that’s how we came up with Geography. So, is the song based on a true story? Yeah, it is actually. I’m not going to tell you who it is about, but I still fancy the girl and I’d still like to get with her if she comes to England sometime, or if I go to America. Did you let her know that the song is about her? No. It’s kind of been on and off for ten years now, so I think she’ll know it’s about her if she hears it.
You’ve previously mentioned Ed Sheeran as a musical influence. Would you ever follow his footsteps and write a song about an ex after a nasty break-up? Yeah, definitely! I find that with lyrics, you can never prepare when they’re going to come to you. Something has to happen to trigger you to get the words in your head. I find it very difficult to say “alright, I’m gonna write a song today”. About what? It would just end up being a crap song. If something happens and triggers emotions, that’s when its a good song. So it’s definitely better to write about ex-girlfriends and all that jazz. Do you have a special routine for songwriting? I tend to get the lyrics late at night. I’ll come up with the guitar part when I’m mucking around during the day, and I’ll get in to bed and be like “shit! I’ve got the lyrics!” And then I’ll run downstairs and wake up the whole household (laughs). What was the funniest tweet you ever received from a fan? My most enjoyable one was a guy who tweeted me saying “The only thing that would make today better would be to see Andy Jordan get hit by a bus”. You do get funny ones like that. And then obviously there’s my nostrils, who have their own twitter account. How do you feel about that? I’m very proud, I obviously have very good nostrils. What was the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to you on the set of Made in Chelsea? It’s hard to remember, I’ve been on the show for a while now. I had one occasion where I ordered a drink and was decorated so elaborately, it looked like the rain forest in a cup. I was having an argument with Louise and looked really silly trying to drink from it. I thought the producers would take the scene out, but they kept it in the show and I just looked like a complete dick. Wor ds: I na Fischer

The team consists of a style director, owner Glynn, nail technician Jess and a senior stylist and stylist offering cuts and blows, semi-permanent or permanent colours, gents and kids, bridal and take-up. I booked in for a cut and blow with Danielle – the latest stylist to join the team. Friendly and professional, Danielle first gave me a hair consultation to find out which products would best suit my hair type then discussed styling options. Using the volumising shampoo, I had a big and bouncy blow dry but a more sleek finish can be created on request.
Relax with Reflexology: Kristina, formerly of Bella Alma Beauty, recently joined the Randle and Randle team and is introducing two new treatments to the salon – Lycon wax – the best waxing system around for minimising the pain of hair removal – and reflexology – a gentle non-invasive foot massage working on energy points to rebalance and harmonise the body. Chic meets the owner and artistic director of new Sheffield salon, Tim Hyde Hairdressing... Hi Tim, I love the look of the salon. How would you describe it? I wanted the salon to have a home from home feel and hopefully I’ve achieved this. I’m from an Italian background so I was keen to incorporate Italian style – a comfortable, relaxed European feel. It has an eclectic mix of modern and antique pieces. The salon is situated in a great location, was this the main reason you relocated from Dronfield? Yes, I love the building. It was formally an antique furniture store and I was a regular shopper there – in fact a lot of the accessories you see in the salon were purchased from the store. Every time I came in, I used to think ‘wow, this would make a really good salon’, so when the unit became available, I had to have it. We moved in mid-June. Tell us about the Tim Hyde team and what you offer? We’re a trio of stylists: There’s me, the artistic
director; Leanne, the senior stylist; and James, the assistant stylist. We’re a classic salon who focus on the quality of cuts and colours. We cater for both men and women and will never rush an appointment such as cutting one client’s hair whilst the other’s colour is being done. We will always offer each individual a bespoke service. We want clients to leave with a cut and colour they can manage at home. Most business comes from word of mouth and we’re lucky to have clients travel from all over the country to visit us. We even have a lady who flies in from Ireland. We don’t have set opening hours either – we open the salon at times that best suit our clients’ needs. We understand that people have busy
work lives and may need to come before or after a salons usual opening hours. I’ve been known to start at 7am and finish close to midnight. I never feel like I’m at work though, I love what I do, it’s more than just a job. When did your career in the hair industry begin? 12 years ago. I began with an intensive two year one-on-one training course with a mentor from Vidal Sassoon. I then went on to work with some of the biggest names in the industry which enabled me to create my own unique style of work. I have a different style of cutting to most – it incorporates the geometric styling I originally trained in, and also a more free hand and experimental style of cutting which I learnt from a self-taught stylist. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with some very talented people. What’s next for Tim Hyde Hairdressing? I’d like to take the brand to London and overseas. I’d love to see a salon open in Italy. Sheffield Clinical Hypnosis Words: Jessica Fogarty Sheffield Clinical Hypnosis is one of the leading hypnotherapy practices in Sheffield. Amongst other treatments the practice specializes in helping people to stop smoking, lose weight, build confidence and help people with their fears and phobias. All these treatments are carried out using the latest in up to date techniques in hypnotherapy and N.L.P (Neuro Linguistic Programming). Martyn Oldfield is the clinical hypnotherapist and has been personally practising and studying hypnosis since being 14 years old. He studied at the Northern Institute of Clinical Hypnotherapists and began professional practice ten years ago. Martyn is registered with the Northern association of professional clinical hypnotherapists and registered with Hypnotherapy register.com
Sheffield Clinical Hypnosis 933 Chesterfield Road Woodseats Sheffield S9 0SS 0114 274 53 57
Using Neuro linguistic programing and Hypnosis, many different problems can be tackled quickly and easily including. “Problems range from nail biting and anxiety to fears and phobias of heights, flying, buttons, spiders and vomit – pretty much anything” Martyn tells us. “Weight loss and smoking are probably the two most common – we had one client who lost nine and a half stone in less than a year – there was no dieting involved, just a change of mind-set to food. “Some treatments can be done in one session but it all depends on the problem, how long the client has been suffering and how severe the symptoms are.” Most sessions are between an hour and half and two hours. During the first session the problem is discussed in privacy and is held in the strictest confidence, then using N.L.P and over twenty years’ experience of hypnosis, changes within the unconscious mind can begin. “Rather than us telling the client how many sessions are needed, we ask the client to keep in touch with us to see how well the treatment has gone and if the client wishes another session then we can book one, This way if the treatment has worked well there is no need to pay for extra sessions that aren’t needed” advises Martyn.
CL IENT TESTIMONIAL “After smoking ten cigars a day for the past 71 years, I never thought I’d be able to quit the habit,” said Val Malthouse (85) from Dore, Sheffield. “I’d tried various methods to help me quit including nicotine patches but they didn’t work for me. “I’d heard about Martyn at Sheffield Clinical Hypnosis and after some research I decided to book a consultation. We chatted for an hour and I told him why I wanted to quit – because of ill health – and he got an understanding of my personal circumstances. “The clinic is really comfortable – I sat back on his couch and felt at ease talking to him. “My second visit took just 20 minutes and as of that day, I haven’t smoked again. He helped me to completely change my mind-set. I still get cravings occasionally but I can deal with these now. “I only wish I’d done it a lot earlier”
Based at Woodseats, the clinic has a relaxed, safe and tranquil environment. Open Tuesday to Thursday 10am-6pm, Friday 10am-4pm. Evening appointments arranged by request for a small charge.

Corner It’s one of Sheffield’s hidden treasures. Tucked away in a backstreet warehouse on Mowbray Street is where one man’s dream became a reality. Retro Corner launched 18 months ago when owner Matthew Mosley was made redundant from his job of ten years at a bathroom company. “I had to find a new career path so I decided to take my hobby of restoring antiques to the next level” said Matt. “I started out in Chesterfield – all I had was a container in a field with no electricity but it was enough to get me going. “Last April I moved in to the Sheffield warehouse and I haven’t looked back.” Retro Corner has quickly expanded from restoring antique tools, vintage furniture and accessories to creating bespoke pieces of hand-made furniture made from reclaimed eco-friendly materials. “We now take orders from all over the country” adds Matt. “As custom furniture experts we can create bespoke pieces of furniture for both the public and trade. “Our portfolio of clients includes Sheffield venues Wick At Both Ends, The Harley, The Bowery and Maida Vale as well as national retailers: Selfridges London, Mac Cosmetics, Ted Baker and Lego. “We’ve also had some celebrity customers including Hugh FearnleyWhittigstall who called up recently and the BBC have asked us to create some pieces for a new cookery show coming soon. “Most of our business comes from customer recommendations which is really humbling.” To find out more, check out Retro Corner on Facebook or visit www.retrocorner.co.uk.

Inspired Garden Lee Bestall has been designing and managing the creation of gardens for over 10 years. Lee regularly writes for gardening magazines throughout the country and is stand in presenter on BBC Radio Sheffield gardening hour. Contact Lee at www. InspiredGardenDesign .co.uk
Gentle jobs for this month include dead heading, watering and a little light trimming. With the last summer bank holiday of the year looming we can sit back, relax and ... think of spring!!! “Already?” I hear you yol (yell out loud). Yes, already. Garden centres take delivery of their spring bulb collections this month and to ensure you get the widest choice and freshest stock, you really do need to be thinking about your selections right now. I know spring doesn’t seem that long ago, but that’s a good thing, because you should be able to remember which areas of the garden would have benefited from a little more colour, sparkle and pizzaz - and in my opinion, that’s what bulbs deliver. The extra colour, height and shape that bulbs such as Alliums provide is second to none. When selecting your bulbs make sure you give them a quick, but delicate squeeze. This will ensure the ones you buy are healthy and will hopefully actually leaf up and flower. I get so many questions about bulbs which are planted and never actually flower, and its not that these people are bad gardeners, but more likely that the bulbs were dead before they were even planted. Plant bulbs from September to November but the sooner the better really, leaving only Tulips until November. Plant 2-3 times the depth of the bulb and if fed after flowering they should give you pleasure for years and may even spread around ... As long as you don’t cut off the leaves until 6 weeks after flowering!
Art in the garden. Meeting Sheffield based artist Fenella Noble was a real pleasure, as was seeing her wonderful work. Loved by children and admired by adults, her fun wire animals really do develop personalities of their own. “When I start cutting from the roll of wire netting I never quite know what the finished creature will look like, which is why I enjoy my work so much”. The sculptures live outside in all weathers and enliven the garden even in winter. For a range of animals see www.fenellanobledesign.co.uk.

Cubana After 14 years on Trippet Lane, Cubana has moved to a new, two floor premises in nearby Leopold Square. The move – which took place in July – has seen one of Sheffield’s most popular Latin bars and restaurant triple its capacity with its move into the former Platillos venue. Cubana owners Adrian Bagnoli and Brad Charlesworth are determined to retain the qualities that have made the venue such a success over the years. The Cubana team have also made the short trip to the new venue bringing with them many of the rustic artefacts and furniture that have become synonymous with the venue. Adrian Bagnoli said: “The past 14 years at Trippet Lane have been fantastic and I have to thank all our customers for their support. But as our popularity has grown, the lack of space has increasingly become a problem.
“Having Cubana over two floors in Leopold Square will allow us to offer so much more for everyone” “Everything people love about Cubana – our award winning tapas food prepared by ever present original head chef Fabian Cruz, the friendly staff providing that warm Latino welcome, our passion for live music, dancing and our renowned tropical cocktails – will be as prevalent as ever. “The decor is rustic in style but maintains the usual relaxed authentic Cuban feel whilst gaining the capacity to offer additional restaurant covers. “We will continue to provide the personable experience that regulars are accustomed to. “The new venue also boasts the addition of a private function room, more DJ nights, a variety of dance classes, many more live music acts, plus there are plans to bring in some of the UK’s top Latino bands for special one off events. “There are exciting times ahead for Cubana - 39 -
and all our customers” The roots of the venue can be traced right back to the mid-1990s when Adrian Bagnoli was one of a trio that launched the Viva Salsa! club night in the city. The mid-week event was a massive success and brought scores of Latin acts to Sheffield for the first time. Many Latin venues have come and gone in recent years in Sheffield but none have had the popularity or staying power of Cubana. The Trippet lane venue has had many high points over the years. Adrian’s personal favourite has been regularl visits by legendary Cuban outfit, Buena Vista Social Club. Cubana also hit the headlines for being a favourite of the 13 piece outfit who’ve made a bee-line for the place after their regular sellout Sheffield City Hall shows. @CubanaTapasBar

The tapas and Mediterranean inspired menu features a variety of fresh made-to-order tapas dishes, gourmet burgers, breads, nibbles and pastas. food A TASTE OF ITALY
What’s new for food?
Carluccios Italian restaurant is the latest venue to join a long line of eateries on Ecclesall Road. Founded by celebrity chef, Antonio Carluccio, the restaurant brings a taste of Italy to Sheffield offering fish, meat, pastas and salads. The man himself arrived in the city to join the launch celebrations in July, and was seen soaking up the sun on the outside terrace on Eccesall Road. The all-day city venue has seating for 88 people inside and ten outside. August 27 is a £15 evening tasting of wines for summer.

N E W CO N C E P T BA R A N D KITC H E N Brought to you by the Rootstock Trading Company – founders of The Harley, now in its tenth year, and The Wick at Both Ends, now in its 5th year – we have high hopes for new concept bar and kitchen, Anchorage. The concept behind Anchorage is slightly complicated. The brand offering is split between two floors, Anchorage bar and deli (downstairs) and the East Coast Kitchen (upstairs). Downstairs will be more of a ‘vertical/social’ eating and drinking area, where you are expected to drink some cocktails/craft beer whilst sharing a platter of home cured meats/pickles. Upstairs will be a casual dining experience, where customers can order from the East Coast Kitchen menu. Mains will include fresh seafood, clams, Blue Crab, Brisket, Sausages, gourmet hot dogs and modern burgers. Anchorage will open its doors to the public August Bank Holiday weekend.

FANCIE THAT!
Anchorage, 8 Fitzwilliam Street, Sheffield
Cake lovers – don’t panic! Your favourite cupcake shop will be back soon. Fancie, Ecclesall Road, is now under the ownership of Matt and Nina Bingham, owners of the successful Milestone and Wig and Pen gastropubs. In a blog post, former owner and queen of the cupcakes Amanda Perry said she had experienced plenty of ups and downs on her seven-year journey, after first baking cupcakes in her kitchen. “Matt and Nina will be using their passion, experience and expertise to grow Fancie as it deserves,” she said. “They had Fancie
cupcakes for their wedding four years ago and have been long and loyal friends to the business and to me personally throughout. “They were the only choice when it came to who could take the reins and continue Fancie in the spirit in which it was started, with the ethos of great food, great cakes and great people.” Your new look Fancie is coming soon! 259-361 Ecclesall Road, Sheffield
ST R AI G H T TO THE P O IN T It’s the city’s new go-to destination. The Pointing Dog opened its doors on Ecclesall Road in May and is fast becoming one of Sheffield’s most highly sought-after venues. Housed in a Victorian building that was for 50 years the Polish ExServiceman’s Club, The Pointing Dog has retained the old membership policy which means you need to sign-up online or at the door – a rule which adds an air of exclusivity while saving the owners the hassle of changing the license. The £1.5m refurbishment of the venue was invested well. Bare plaster walls, graphic metalwork, factory and studio-style lighting and a mesh-clad bar reputed to be the largest in the city gives the venue a cool, New York City vibe. Complete with a spacious outdoor terrace, it’s the perfect city hotspot for a summer’s day.

The V intage Pantry
They’re possibly the prettiest menus we’ve ever seen! Hand-written in floral prints, they match the elegant venue perfectly. We place our order of tea-for-two and rest our feet in ‘cosy corner’. As we look around, we can’t take our eyes off the beautiful vintage furnishings. Founded by friends Anna Marples and Kate Searle, The Vintage Pantry opened its doors in May, offering home-cooked food and cakes. Located upstairs in the Sheffield Antiques Centre, it’s the ideal spot to combine a bite to eat with a shopping trip. “Everything on the menu is home-made – we want customers to feel like they’re sat in someone’s kitchen” says Kate, who’s aptly dressed in a hand-made floral pinny and pearls.
Vintage Pantry Beautiful cosy tea room in one of Sheffield’s leading antique centres
Breakfast is served daily until 12 noon, featuring bacon sandwiches, eggs three ways and breads; lunch is served until 3pm, featuring sandwiches, jacket potatoes and salads; and afternoon tea is available until 4.15pm – a tiered stand of sandwiches, cakes and scones, served with a pot of tea – tea leaves of course.
The Vintage Pantry (Upstairs in the Sheffield Antiques Centre) 178-188 Broadfield Road • S8 OXL
Through the six week school summer holidays, take advantage of the two for £15 afternoon tea deal, or opt for splendid afternoon tea, served with Prosecco for £12.95pp.
Open Monday to Saturday 10.30am-4pm Sunday 11am-4pm.
Fresh scones are baked every morning as well as two sponge cakes per day. “Our speciality is the lavender scone” adds Anna, whose memory is triggered at the thought and she dashes to the hot oven to take out a fresh batch. The smell of freshly baked treats hits you from the moment you walk in the room. “We also make plain, fruit, banana and sultana and two naughty but nice varieties – Mars and Snicker scones.” The main café area seats 25 diners plus an additional four of five on the retro sofas in cosy corner – a hotspot for knitters. Crochet Club is hosted at Vintage Pantry on the first Sunday of every month – there’s no charge, just turn up and knit whether you’re a novice or an expert. Most things you’ll see in the café are for sale – not just the edibles. Clare Bamford Cards are stocked in Vintage Pantry as well as Jo Malone candles by ‘My Vintage Sisters’. “We want to support other local businesses” says Kate. “All stock is Made in Sheffield. “We also offer ‘The seven teas of Sheffield’ – supplied by The Bird House Tea Company – a
family run business who blend their own brews here in the city. “And we have pick ‘n’ mix sweet jars coming soon – we want to stand out from our competitors and offer something a little bit different for all types of customers.” As we head to the till, our eyes and noses are drawn to the counter top which is filled with an array of tempting treats. We can’t resist buying a scone and marshmallow cupcake to take away with us. If you count your calories, you’ll be pleased to hear that the menu at Vintage Pantry will soon contain nutritional information so you can tot up the sins before you place your order. Special occasions are catered for at Vintage Pantry and outside catering is available including the hire of china. Nothing to celebrate just yet? Vintage Pantry is well worth a visit anyway – no need for an occasion.

This prestigious status is a sign that we’re doing everything right, and is a reflection of the whole team. “I am motivated by the satisfaction and enjoyment I get from working in the kitchen so to be recognised in this way for something I love is just terrific. Icons sprung onto the Sheffield gay scene on 21st September 2014. With what can only be described as an amazing grand opening it was welcomed onto the scene with open arms. The fantastic comments received complementing the decor, pleasantness of the staff, and quality of drinks, made the labours of love required to open in time more than worthwhile! Icons is the brainchild of Daniel Richardson (Managing Director). The idea came from a conversation with his previous employer regarding the gay scene (or rather lack of) within Sheffield. Once the idea was formed, and the business plan laid out Daniel set about the task of employing staff. His first port of call was two close friends, Kyle and Nik. With tremendous effort of the three friends combined, it was only a matter of weeks before the drinks range was decided, the staff were employed and the bar was decorated. Icons really spoils you for choice when it comes to the drinks selection. With over 70 different spirits to choose from (including a super-premium range) you are certain to find a drink that really tickles your fancy! Icons also boasts Sheffield’s largest vodka selection with over 40 to take your pick from! Catering for all wallets, Icons provides ‘Happy Hours’ 4pm until 7pm Monday

MOTORING
Mercedes-Benz SLK 250 CDI
>> If you really like driving then a roadster is the sort of car you probably desire – unless there’s one in your garage already. There’s something intoxicating about two-up, open-top motoring. Traditionally, these cars are powered with petrol. But Mercedes-Benz has gone one further with its SLK 250 CDI Roadster and fitted a diesel engine into it. While oil-burning drop-tops have been a premium manufacturer product for a few years now, this is the first two-seat, rear-drive convertible that runs on the stuff. The 204 bhp four-cylinder lump puts the Mercedes-Benz at the top of its class in several respects. With an average fuel consumption of 56.5 mpg it’s the most economical roadster in its sector. The frugal fuel drinking makes the SLK 250 CDI a car with superior long-distance qualities. It is for example quite possible to drive from the North Sea in the UK to a beach on the Mediterranean non-stop. Supportive sports seats, a decent suspension setup and the largest luggage capacity in this car category also do their bit to create the right conditions. I drove the 250 CDI AMG Sport model. Thanks to bags of low down shove and a 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission, it accelerates from 0-62 mph in 6.7 seconds. This means the car has another feather in its cap: it’s the most powerful diesel model in its class. The result is dramatic driving enjoyment both on twisty country roads and motorway stretches. As it shares the same genes as other members of the SLK family, the 250 CDI combines its alert acceleration with stylish comfort, a stunning sports car design and day-to-day suitability.
By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist Follow Tim on Twitter: @carwriteups www.carwriteups.co.uk
The SLK 250 CDI is available with a choice of three versions of the German motormanufacturer’s famous vario-roof – one of them the panoramic vario-roof with Magic Sky Control. This glass top can be changed from dark to transparent at the touch of a button. It’s clever stuff – especially if the weather means you can’t drop the roof but you still want to feel natural light flooding into the cabin. There are also three suspension versions available: a conventional steel suspension, a sports suspension with a stiffer spring and damper setup or a suspension with an electronically controlled, automatic damping system. The latter is part of the Dynamic Handling package, which also includes the Direct-Steer system and the Torque Vectoring Brake developed by Mercedes-Benz for particularly responsive and predictable handling characteristics. The SLK 250 CDI went on sale in 2012, yet it still looks like it’s just rolled out of the Mercedes-Benz design studios. Externally it’s no different in appearance from the petrol models. It even retains the twin exhaust system, and therefore has the same electrifying look for which all the SLK models are known. To be honest, there are so few areas for criticism. The motor is what it is: a two-seater sports car, so there’s little point moaning about lack of space for the dog and kids. Sure, I can see some petrol-purists turning their nose up at a diesel offering, but with the SLK 250 CDI’s pulling power and economy, it’s obvious why it’s such a good choice – even if you do need over £35,000 to afford a brand new one.

Get a load a Geo Chic meets Sheffield illustrator, George Law You may recognise his work before the man himself. George Law is the name behind the illustrative artwork which has taken over the streets of Sheffield. Originally from Huddersfield, George (29) moved to Sheffield aged three. In the past decade he’s quickly built a name for himself in the industry as one of the most talented and highly regarded free-hand illustrators in the city. How would you describe your style of work? Fast doodling based on things I’m interested in. My work incorporates comic book illustrations, Japanese and Far Eastern art. My line style is what I’m particular about – it’s what I’m known for. When did your hobby become a career? I studied graphic design at Nottingham Trent University and I continued to do my own illustrative artwork during this time. Soon after I held my first show at The Forum in Sheffield and people started taking an interest in my work. What was your first paid-for piece of work? My first commissioned job was at The Common Room in Sheffield then at Hair Kandi. Word spread from there.
How has the business expanded? Initially my work was only seen in Sheffield but now most of my jobs come is further afield. Some of my most recent clients have been big industry names – Microsoft, Facebook and eOne entertainment. I’m also signed to an agency now and I’m teaching at Sheffield Hallam University. A lot of artists head to London. Why did you decide to stay in Sheffield? I work in London a lot but house prices are stupid down there. There weren’t too many artists in Sheffield when I started four years ago so I was lucky to get a lot of exposure from a lot of local businesses for my unique style. Now there is so much more competition not only in Sheffield but all over the world. I think Sheffield will always be home. Is it weird seeing your artwork all over Sheffield? It was at first, definitely. I’m starting to take over other cities now. Who or what inspires you? I look up to a lot of artists. Kid Acne from Sheffield is definitely an icon. I also take inspiration from Asian art and I read a lot of comic books. Do you have a favourite piece of work? My most recent piece is always my favourite. Did you ever consider another career? At one stage I was considering a career as a criminologist; my

mum wanted me to be a lawyer and my dad wanted me to be a doctor. I couldn’t imagine doing any of those now. What’s an average day for you? I work nine til five as often as I can. Because I’m my own boss and I have no-one to tell me what to do, so I need to be disciplined. I usually find I’m at my most creative at 6pm though so I’ll often work late. Is your house full of your own work? It definitely isn’t. I get fed up of seeing my own work so my house is full of work by other people. What materials do you use? I just use pen – point marker pens – they’re fast and smooth. I’ve had to adapt my technique over the years though. I used to draw with my hands but now I put the pressure on my arms – it can get painful. Have you ever gone wrong? There’s no rubbing-out a marker pen, is there? Thankfully, I’ve never gone majorly wrong. If I make a minor mistake, I just make the line a bit thicker or use my imagination to create something different to cover it up. The only time I’ve made a mistake is through spelling. In my defence I’m an artist not a writer. Luckily the background of the wall was white so I had to paint over it and start again. What’s next for you? I’m constantly learning and developing what I do. I have some shows coming up at S1 art space. This is where my studio is based. The gallery is open from now until the end of August. I also have my own solo show coming up in Leeds.

Zap that unwanted hair for good at Medispa S10
How many times have you longed for a permanent solution to that embarrassing body hair? For thousands of men and women in the UK, this is no joke - they are literally so self conscious they avoid social contact and are suffering such low self esteem that it really affects their personal relationships. It is well documented that almost 150 years ago people were starting to look for permanent methods of hair reduction. Long before the introduction of Intense Pulse Light and laser machines, both men and women were using the oldest type of permanent hair reduction, electrolysis, to achieve hair removal on a more permanent basis. A more painful and laborious approach which involves using needles, many women still choose this method as laser and IPL machines are ineffective when treating light blonde or grey hairs. In the 1970’s doctors started experimenting with laser technology and this became commercially available around the world in the 1990’s. Along with IPL systems, it would appear it is now the most popular method of hair removal used today. If you look on the internet for a few minutes, you will be inundated with adverts for “permanent hair removal”, and “permanent hair reduction”. Quite honestly it all looked too good to be true so I decided to find out for myself. I tried calling a few clinics and still couldn’t get to the bottom of what the difference in the techniques was, and finally came across Medispa S10 in Sheffield, a clinic who claim to have “25 years of experience,” Hopefully with all that experience, they should be able to shed some light on things! Juliet Laws, one of the directors of Medispa S10 put it simply: “We have been in this industry for a long time and in the late 90’s had a laser clinic which used NDYag lasers. “The treatment was extremely and quite painful for the client. Sometimes a man’s back
treatment was in excess of six hours and to be honest, today’s customer is just too busy to sit through a treatment that long. “Intense Pulse light lasers were then introduced which, although less painful, were often found to be simply less effective. “We watched as the technology changed and have decided to bring the Soprano Xli diode laser machine into our business now as we have researched laser hair removal systems for a long time and feel that it is the best available in the world today. “Clients come to us for a number of reasons. Excess hair can be caused by ethnic heritage or even hormonal problems such as polycystic ovaries or a hormone secreting tumour. “Many ladies and men are much more body conscious and being hair free is often seen as a sign of beauty. Still, however, in many circles, it is still not discussed. “You would be amazed at how many enquiries we have for the male genital area to be treated. So yes, laser hair removal is definitely a big part of our business!” I asked Juliet what prompted her and her business partners, Charmaine Hearn and Emma Idowu, to choose the Soprano laser over a much
more affordable IPL machine. “At the end of the day, the results speak for themselves. “IPL is more painful and cannot treat anyone with darker skin types as there is always a risk of hyperpigmentation. “The laser we have uses something called in-motion technology, which glides over the area, keeping it cool and making it a very quick treatment. “This ensures it is a pain free method of hair removal. Also it is able to treat every skin colour without any side effects. “We had talked to lots of happy customers before we bought this machine. We always do a lot of research before we provide anything at the clinic.” With celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Victoria Beckham both admitting to having had laser hair removal, I wondered if the majority of the Medispa S10 clients were young women aspiring to their idols. “Absolutely not”, said Juliet. At least 50 per cent of our clients are darker skinned and have previously been unable to be treated. “It’s life changing for many of these women” Whatever the reason, it certainly sounds like there is now a solution to the problem.

Mumbai Mumbai serves-up authentic Indian cuisine in a contemporary al-fresco dining environment. Sat on the outside terrace of Mumbai on Ecclesall Road is the perfect summer setting to enjoy the delicious dishes on offer – from traditional curries to tandoori grills and chef’s specials. First-up, the poppadum’s arrived with eight varieties of pickles. From a peppery mango chutney to diced onion and spicy salsa – the appetiser certainly tempted our taste buds. The staff, friendly and professional, were quick to take our order and promptly returned to the table to check we were happy with the dishes they’d served. We couldn’t fault it. We ordered the chicken tikka pieces and fish pakora starters – two light but spicy dishes accompanied with a fresh side salad. The prices are more than reasonable given the quality of the food and standard of cooking. Starters range from £2.70 - £4.50 per dish. For main course, we opted for a chicken jalfrezi, chicken passanda, garlic nan and pilau rice. The Jalfrezi was tandoori cooked with green peppers, onion, coriander, herbs, spices, tandoori Kashmir masala and green chillies. A fairly spicy dish, but the heat didn’t overpower. The chicken passanda – cooked in oriental spices with fresh cream, onions, green peppers, coconut and sugar, red wine, sultanas and nuts – was a mild dish but full of rich flavour. Dishes range from £6.50 to £9.95 with sides for under £3 each. Early evening is the perfect time to visit to guarantee a seat on the terrace while it’s quiet, but late evening is the best time to book a table if you want to soak up the atmosphere when the restaurant is at its busiest. If you prefer to dine indoors, choose from the bright, modern seating areas spread over two floors, accommodating up to 50 diners. Mumbai also has a licenced bar upstairs and down and is available to hire for special occasions.

Ahmad Hussain How would you describe your new album, My Beloved? I dedicated this album to my Beloved mother after she was sadly diagnosed with cancer early last year. The album consists of 13 Nasheeds (songs) that have been performed in Urdu, Arabic and English. The production of this album has involved many producers and master musicians from around the world, performing classical instruments such as the santoor, kemenche and Oudh, which has created a rich blend and fusion of modern and traditional instruments. The main focus of this album is on the lyrics, which are spiritually uplifting and thought provoking. I have personally wrote many of the songs on this album. What has the public reaction been so far? I have been overwhelmed and humbled by the wonderful response and reaction I have received from my fans and supporters from all corners of the world. I have been inundated with messages of support and appreciation for the album and cannot express enough thanks and gratitude to God Almighty for this. You’ve endured many life challenges including the sudden death of your sister 12 years ago and more recently your mother who was diagnosed with cancer. Does music help you deal with these situations?

Chic meets Ahmad Hussain, Sheffield born and internationally renowned Nasheed singer and songwriter.
RT
I was living a dream 12 years ago; I was at a crucial stage in my life where I had been offered many opportunities which would have been the launch pad for a very successful career in the mainstream music industry. However, I was met with a life changing event, I lost my 28 year old sister Shazia, who suddenly collapsed and passed away whilst participating in a sporting activity. This was the turning point in my life and I decided to leave the mainstream music scene and found this genre of spiritual music that would allow me to connect with people and to promote positive messages. My life experiences and feelings are prominent in my works and I feel that people can relate to this as they may have been affected by similar situations, my songs give people a sense of hope and optimism. You filmed the ‘My Beloved’ video in Gary Barlow’s home – how and why did you chose this venue? I have been fortunate in the sense that I have met and worked alongside some of the finest producers in the mainstream industry, many of these have worked with artists such as Bryan Adams, Celine Dion and Gary Barlow to name a few. When we were deciding on the location to shoot the music video, I was advised by my location manager that Gary Barlow’s manor home in Cheshire would be the ideal setting. You’ve also filmed a video in the Merzouga desert – that must have been an unforgettable experience?
Merzouga desert is situated near the Moroccan and Algerian border; it is vast desert land and also the location of some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters such as ‘The Mummy’. We had to drive for at least 12 hours, with the production team and equipment through the Atlas Mountains as the area has no airport or rail infrastructure. It was one of the most scenic and picturesque journeys and one that will live with me for many years to - 11 -
come, the video we filmed ‘Ya Taiba’ is a traditional Arabic song that also portrays a caravan travelling on a pilgrimage to the blessed city of Medina in Arabia. When did you first discover an interest in music? As a child I always showed an interest in instruments, I recall having my own keyboard at the age of five and at school I was always
working with my production team on some surprises that I will be sharing in the near future. You travel the world with your music - where has been the best place you’ve performed? I have been blessed with the opportunity to perform my songs in all continents of the world, I was recently in the USA where I performed at the annual ICNA convention which attracted over 20,000 people, and I also recently performed at the Excel Arena for the Global Peace and Unity event. I would say that Turkey and South Africa are countries where I have had memorable experiences and have met some wonderful people, I love people, and I get my energy and inspiration for my music from people. Will Sheffield always be your home? I spend a lot of time abroad performing and producing, but Sheffield has a special place in my heart, I grew up here and its where my family and friends live, I have considered moving abroad and may in the future, but until then, Sheffield is my home. Did you take some time off during Ramadan? Ramadan was a special month that I had been anticipating for a long time; the time of the year which allows me time to reflect and to spend time with my family. I had no international commitments during this month, but I did perform for many charitable projects to help raise funds for the poor and needy. I was honoured with the opportunity to be part of the Ilm Fast tour 2014, which travelledw up and down the UK with some renowned speakers, helping the less fortunate. What’s next for you? I have a very busy year ahead God willing, I will be travelling to many other countries to launch my album, I also have events planned in South Africa and my management are in the planning stages of a tour in the Middle East.

keen to sing. My first taste of walking into a studio was at the age of ten, when my elder brother Abid Fazal founded and managed Sheffield’s first Asian community RSL, I recall doing voiceovers and spending hours on end in the studio listening to all types of music and meeting many experienced broadcasters and presenters.
Just like any other 90s child, I would say that Michael Jackson was a singer who really inspired my love for music, but I also had many other musical influences in my life including Sufi singers Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Sabri brothers.

I will also be releasing some music videos from my new album, one of which was recently filmed in New York. I am also working on some new material, so watch this space for updates. The phase I am in now is more about bringing people together. I have started a new chapter in my Nasheed career. I did not intend making music just for a particular group. My Nasheeds are for everyone. So I hope to diversify more and explore different areas.
