Welcome Editor’s Letter As the roadies packed up after this year’s Tramlines Festival, it seems it wasn’t only a lorry full of amps they departed with. Since that weekend, the sun appears to have absconded, and for me, Sheffield has felt somewhat lacklustre. However, what August does bring to make me smile is a deluge of e-mails (I’m easily pleased) informing me of all the great things us Sheffield folk have to look forward to this autumn. Now the festivals are dying down, it’s time for a whole host of comedians and musicians to descend on the city as they embark on their own headline tours. This month I was lucky enough to question Canadian crooner Ron Sexsmith. A fan for years, I’m very much hoping to spot him in one of Sheffield’s watering holes before his show this September. I also caught up with sassy sketch show sirens Lady Garden, who are currently selling out shows at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival and are headed for our city this October.

The only thing is, you really haven’t got the perfect dress, that knockout frock that’ll stun your co-workers and get you that promotion. Everyone knows the Little Black Dress (LBD) is a wardrobe mainstay, it goes with everything, a classic piece, no matter size or shape. However, LBD’s available from the high street currently have little character and hardly act to distinguish you from the pack. The Nichols Building has the solution. Little is known of New York indie-pop band Cults. Shying away (until very recently) from social networking, and leaving Internet searches sparse on insight, duo Brian Oblivion and Madeline Follin are certainly surrounded by an intriguing air of mystery. What we do know is that the band, who originate from San Diego, released their debut self-titled album this June to positive reviews. The first release from which is single ‘Go Outside’, a catchy, melodic tune, accompanied by a video which captures the quirky, sixties era which has obviously influenced the band’s sound. Due to a later than scheduled release of their album, their show, which was to originally take place at The Leadmill in May, has been rescheduled to a free event at The Bowery. Leadmill ticket holders receive a full refund and still get a chance to see the duo perform a collection of sweet, summery tracks to perfectly compliment a warm August evening.

Former stand-up comedian, sketch show writer and now award winning playwright, Richard Bean brings his English version of Carlo Goldoni’s 1743 classic Italian comedy The Servant With Two Masters to Sheffield. Replacing the period Italian setting with 1960’s Brighton, Bean triumphantly adapts the piece for a modern audience. Gavin & Stacey star and writer, James Corden is among the stars, playing perpetually ravenous Francis Henshall, who greedily takes on two jobs and subsequently must keep apart his two ‘guvnors’ whilst being holed up at The Cricketers’ Arms. Coming to the stage this September to mark The Crucible’s 40th anniversary is Shakespeare’s most thrilling psychological drama, Othello. An epic tale, spiced with love, racism, jealousy and betrayal. Joining the cast as Othello and Lago are stars of cult TV series ‘The Wire’, Clarke Peters and Dominic West. No strangers to the Steel City, Clarke appeared at the celebrated theatre in the 1980’s production of musical ‘Carmen Jones’ and Dominic was raised on the outskirts of the city. Hannah Dodd, Beattie Edmondson, Rose Johnson, Eleanor Thom and Camille Ucan are Lady Garden and the critically acclaimed sketch sirens will be making a stop in our city this October as part of The Shef-

field Comedy Festival. Clever, not crass, this all female comedy collective are currently exuding their creativity and wit on stage at the renowned Edinburgh Fringe Festival. We caught up with the ladies, in the midst of rapturous applauses from a rainy Edinburgh, where they took time out to talk to us about rituals, RADA and risotto.

Firstly, you all met at University, but what was it that drew you together?

Hannah: We’d all worked together on a night called Just For A Laugh, which Eleanor and Camille produced and had just done a sell-out night at The Comedy Store. Beattie: We had such a good time writing and messing around with characters during that so we decided we wanted to play around for the rest of our lives, or at least until they wouldn’t let us have another credit card.

Which comics have inspired your love for the genre?

Eleanor: Where do you start? The list is endless but a few we always go back to for inspiration are Julia Davis, Caroline Aherne, John Cleese, Steve Coogan, Chris Morris, Armando Iannucci, Charlie Chaplin, Jacques Tati, Ricky Gervais, Mighty Boosh and Monty Python.

How did you settle on your slightly risqué name?

Eleanor: There were 250 names and only 36 hours to choose, we were manically ringing each other offering the most absurd of titles: ‘Granny Left The Iron On’ would have been an interesting rushed choice four years on….

Do you write your sketches as a collective?

Rose: Some are completely improvised in rehearsal, often coming from a line we heard someone say or something that has made us all angry but that made us laugh too. Camille: It depends on the sketch really. We write in 1’s, 2’s and 3’s and sometimes we come with a first draft and someone else edits it or we throw ideas around the room. Hannah: It makes you up your game as a writer if you’re in a team as you get an immediate response in the very early stages as to whether something works - four people laughing or not laughing can make your stuff much better.

Was ‘serious’ acting ever an option for any of you?

Rose: Famously Camille turned down a place at RADA Camille: It was for the Stage Management course. Rose: Either way it’s RADA daaarrrling. Hannah: We do ‘serious stuff’ sometimes outside of Lady Garden. Beattie: The darker stuff in this year’s show requires some people to play ‘serious’ characters. Eleanor: I reckon some of the best comic stuff is when the writing and performance is as true to reality as possible. Sometimes the ‘serious’ character can be the most interesting one to play and sometimes even the funniest. Beattie: She’s only saying that because she has to play ‘serious’ quite a bit in this show.

Eleanor: Thank you Beattie!

Have any of you ventured into solo shows?

Hannah: We are actresses as well as writers and performers so we often do bits of work outside of Lady Garden both acting and writing.

You won critical acclaim in 2008 at the Edinburgh Fringe and you’re there again now, receiving great reviews and selling out your shows. How does it feel to be so well received upon your return?

Rose: We’re really enjoying the show this year; nice reviews, lovely audiences and some really brilliant curry houses. Beattie: Edinburgh is one of the best places to bring a new show and be inspired by other people’s brains too. There’s so many brilliant acts up here – both new and established- it’s so much fun to perform every day and then go and watch as many shows as possible!

Aside from your peculiar antics on stage, do you have any bizarre rituals you must perform before starting a show? Hannah: We usually just huddle together and have a moment to

focus. Camille: Then we do a special Lady Garden song and dance before we go onstage. Beattie: We don’t do that. Camille: No we don’t but we should.

How do Lady Garden spend their downtime whilst on tour? Rose: We eat nice food and watch boxsets- on the original The Killing at the moment- rock and roll huh?!

What makes Lady Garden cackle?

Hannah: Lots of stuff, it’s a great thing that we still make each other laugh after nearly four years and some pretty trying times! Eleanor: There’s a bit in this show where Rose does a little dance, and it never fails to make me laugh (unprofessionally) in the wings- and Rose bloody knows it because she’s now making it weirder every show to keep me on my toes!

You’ve done some work on television, but does your true love lie with the smell of the greasepaint and the roar of the crowd?

Eleanor: TV is brilliant for many reasons but it’s a very different medium to live comedy. We love doing live because you get an Issue 37 | Chic Lifestyle Magazine

Interview | Lady Garden immediate response which is an amazing thing as both a writer and performer- the stuff you wrote in that café and thought was alright actually works or doesn’t - either way you know pretty quickly what’s working or what’s not and you can change it or tweak it almost immediately- it’s more fluid and less fixed and permanent than filmed stuff.

Though you’re doing something you love, it must be exhausting performing month long residencies, how do you remain motivated? Hannah: It’s great to be in a group rather than solo for this- we keep each other up with music, stupid faces, nice food. Eleanor: I’m motivated by the thought of one of Rose’s risottos. Hannah: Or that chilli thing she does Eleanor: I cannot believe we are listing meals Rose makes as motivation. Camille: I liked that Paella we had one night. Beattie: Sorry about this. People laughing and turning up in the rain and recession is enough to be motivated- if we’re all up for it – audience and us- it is a lovely way to spend a night.

Have you had any bad experiences whilst performing?

Eleanor: We’ve had some pretty ropey “backstage areas”. Camille: Jam cupboards, snow covered alleyways. Rose: In the years when we didn’t wear shoes for the show! Hannah: Toilets, men’s toilets, fields, tents, cars, streets. Beattie: (Mock Yorkshire accent) You had it easy, when I started out there wasn’t even a stage for there to be a back of!

How do you plan to make the Lady Garden grow?

Elanor: We are having a lovely time with this show and audiences are having great fun every night so more of this for the rest of 2011 I think. Camille: We’ve got a big gig in November at The Leicester Square Theatre, London - a one night only West End version of our London comedy residency ‘Lady Garden & Friends’ which will have some of our favourite guests from the past three years and a very special headline guest! Look out for it!

Any exciting plans in the pipeline?

Eleanor: We’re planning a real ale train journey for Hannah’s birthday. Pretty exciting. Camille: We’re touring around all over the place this Autumn - and we’ve not done that for a while so that will be great fun Manchester, Hull, Saltaire, Newcastle, Sheffield, Devon, London. Beattie: Better check we’ve got oil in the car this time! Rose: I already checked it Beattie. Beattie: Thanks Rose. It’s because I tried to drive from London to Edinburgh with no oil. Diversity is the watch word when it comes to Switzerland. The country is about as homogenous as London. Historically, this has been the case ever since the thirteenth century, when several Swiss Cantons (states) came together, to band against the Holy Roman Empire (the ruling power of the time), to create a loose alliance of states known as the Swiss Confederation. This has facilitated a history of an alliance of various different groups of people, through the modern principle of direct democracy and a fierce policy of neutrality. In modern times, this diversity had lead to a country with four different official languages (German, French, Italian and Romansh), several prominent Churches (both Catholic and Protestant) and a myriad of cultural traditions. No Swiss city is more representative of these modern Swiss values, than Geneva. Located on the border with France, on the tip of Lake Geneva, flying into the city affords fantastic views of the stunning alpine landscape with majestic, snow covered mountain tops and luscious, green valleys, all in your direct line of sight. The flight can be come by for cheap, with flights to Geneva starting at £20 from low cost airlines such as Jet2 and easyJet. Landing in the tastefully sumptuous Geneva airport, will find you landing in the heart of one of the most expensive cities in the world, which is one of the top five cities in the world for living conditions. Take a short shuttle bus into the heart of the city, and you’ll find yourself in a luxurious paradise, with many hotels to choose from to take residence in. If you wish to be close to the heart of the city, the train station and Lake Geneva, then the

luxury Royal Manotel Hotel, on Rue Lausanne, would be perfect. A tastefully grand location, the Royal Manotel offers elegant rooms, with antique style, period furniture, bold royal colours, and period style bedding with drapes, reminiscent of the sort of thing you’d find in a re-enactment of the life of Queen Elizabeth 1st. As well as this, the hotel offers free wi-fi, a fitness centre and a sauna. If you wish to find something closer to the airport, then check into the Starling Geneva Hotel. Located next to the Palexpo Exhibition Centre on the Route Francois-Peyrot, and a three minute drive from the airport, the Starling is distinctly more modern than the Manotel. Boasting truly modern rooms, with bright white walls, simple block-colour artwork, and simple, yet large and bright bedspreads, the Starling is tastefully post modern, and offers free airport transport, a wellness centre and free wi-fi. Beautifully stunning by nature, Geneva is a city that has a different appeal for each season. To visit in the summer means long hot days lazing in front of the visually stunning Lake Geneva, sipping an ice cold drink, at one of the many café’s lining the river front. In your line of sight will be the Jet d’Eau, which is literally a colossal jet of water, which both cools you off and looks physically awesome. It’s best to visit the Jet d’Eau on a hot summer’s night, where it is lit up with grand lighting and amazing fireworks. The

winter, of course, is skiing season, and Geneva is literally on the doorstep of the Alps. In other words going to Geneva in the winter means you are on the cusp of every major Ski resort the Western Alps has to offer. Need we say more? Aside from this, the city boasts stunning winter markets, and breathtaking decorations around the Christmas period. Speaking of beautiful things, Geneva is famous for them. It is a massive centre of the luxury watch trade; walk down the main high streets and you will see dozens of luxury watch stores, which boast beautifully, hand-crafted Swiss watches, the sort that cost thousands and you feel privileged to even look at. The watch trade is not the only trade famous to Geneva; it also boasts a roaring business in hand-crafted cuckoo clock shops. Veer off to a side street and you will encounter quaint, old-fashioned shops with a fabulously rustic feel to them, and unique clocks hanging from every space, on every wall. To visit Geneva, whether looking for the traditional or modern, is a shopper’s paradise. However Geneva has a seriously political side to it. Located in a country that has been traditionally neutral since the climax of the Napoleonic Wars, Geneva is the home to the Palace of Nations, which is the second largest meeting place for representatives of the UN, in the

World. The Palace of Nations was built to be the Headquarters of the League of Nations. As well as its official UN functions, there are guided tours through the palace that explore the modern history of the UN. To find out more about Geneva’s role away from official politics, in the arena of human rights, visit the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum. The city is the birth place of this humanitarian movement, and the museum gives a fascinating account of how the organisation came to represent what it does in post modern society. If you need a break from the academic side of the neutral city, visit Montreux, a town on the other side of Lake Geneva, which is famed as the town the ‘Queen’ lead singer, freddie Mercury, spent his last days before his death in 1991. There is even a statue of the singer on the Montreux shore of the lake. A little further from Geneva lays the town of Gruyère, on the edge of the French-speaking Swiss territory. The town is famed for gruyere cheese, and if you visit the cheese factory, not only is there a delightful tour, but the factory offers mouth watering pots of fondue to sample.

If fondue isn’t your style then stay in the heart of the city to sample Swiss cuisine. When a family member becomes mentally incapable of managing their own affairs, it is often necessary for someone to step in and take over the handling of financial matters on their behalf. In English law there are a couple of methods of achieving this. The most appropriate method will often depend on whether the person has already lost mental capacity, or whether a solution has been put in place in advance of this situation arising, which it is possible to do by setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA). Here, specialist solicitor Katy Burgin outlines the different legal devices available to deal with both scenarios.

Loss of Mental Capacity Commonly Arises due to the Following Reasons: • Age related problems ( dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, stroke) • Accidents • Mental illness • Mental handicap Generally, if someone has already lost mental capacity it will be necessary for a family member to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as their deputy. This means that someone will be legally entitled to manage that person’s finance and property matters. Deciding which route to take when you are faced with a situation where someone needs help is not easy. It is often the case with diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Dementia that the person involved will

have fluctuating mental capacity, good days and bad. In these cases we may seek medical advice to help determine the best solution. An expert solicitor can help you to determine whether the Court of Protection or a Lasting Power of Attorney is the most suitable route.

Making Preparations in Advance Many people are concerned about what will happen to them in the event of losing mental capacity through such illnesses as Alzheimer’s disease, dementia or a stroke. The Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document, introduced in 2007, in which you can nominate someone to deal with your affairs. The idea behind the introduction of the Lasting Power of Attorney is that even someone with reduced mental capacity should still be able to exercise some control over what happens to them. By setting up an LPA in advance you are able to choose someone you trust to deal with your affairs. If you do not have an LPA, and later lose mental capacity, then someone will need to apply to the Court of Protection to become entitled to manage your affairs and this may not be the person you would have chosen yourself. You can set up an LPA so that it only acti-

vates once you are medically diagnosed as having lost mental capacity. It is possible to appoint more than one person to be your attorneys. You can nominate them to make decisions jointly or you can give certain decision making abilities to each of them. There are two type of LPA available, each with different powers, and you can tailor make an LPA to suit your requirements. The LPAs available are:

Property and Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney A Property and Affairs LPA gives someone the authority to deal with your finances such as receiving income and benefits, dealing with banking and general finances and handling your property, including buying and selling. A Property and Affairs LPA can be set up to be used immediately or only after the donor loses mental capacity.

Personal Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney A Personal Welfare LPA is different in that it can only take effect after the donor’s loss of mental capacity.

Legal | Relative’s Affairs

A Personal Welfare LPA enables the attorneys to make decisions about your personal healthcare and welfare. This can include giving consent to or refusing medical treatment, deciding whether you continue to live in your own home or go into residential care, and your day to day care if you are already in a care home. An option also exists to give your attorney the power to make decisions about ‘life sustaining treatment’, although this section is something that you have to explicitly authorise when you set up the LPA. Attorneys have a duty to act in the best interest of the donor at all times and certain legal restrictions are in place to limit what they are able to do. Lasting Powers of Attorney can be complex and legal advice should always be sought.

The interesting thing is how fame is now what you think it is. Some people seem to think I must be living it up in a mansion somewhere like Hugh Hefner. Believe me, I’m not! If I was living like Hugh Hefner, I’d be in a hot tub with two Playboy bunnies, not on stage in Leeds or wherever. I like to remind my audience ‘If my life was better than yours, then I promise you I wouldn’t be here tonight.’

Spinsters of Sheffield beware, a 6’’7 OggMonster is headed for the Steel City… in search of a wife. Eagerly sniffing out a maiden to betroth, BAFTA and Emmy award winning writer and comedian Stephen Merchant is embarking on his first stand up tour across the country, but it’s all a not-so-secret guise to secure a spouse.

Stephen’s fame seems to have only hindered his romantic prospects. ‘’I thought that dating would be much easier after I became well-known and had my picture in the paper, but actually that just brings a lot of other complications’’. It seems Merchant is seeking sympathy as well as laughs as he embarks on the tour which sees him play across the country. ‘’My favourite comedians are always the butt of their own jokes. You appear to have a natural superiority when you’re on stage, because you’re the centre of attention, so I want to remind the audience that in my eyes they’re superior. I want them to be thinking, ‘I’m here with my girlfriendhe’s the one going home alone!’ The comic adds, “Of course if you don’t do it right, people just feel sorry for you and can’t laugh. They think, ‘his life is so grim’. I don’t want them to come to a comedy show and leave depressed and maybe hit the bottle…on my behalf.’’

After creating the immensely popular, groundbreaking television comedies The Office and Extras with his collaborator Ricky Gervais, Merchant now sets sail solo, to expose his somewhat hidden talents as a stand up comic. ‘’Most people don’t know it, but I started doing stand-up after I left university’’ states Merchant. ‘’A lot of my heroes, like Woody Allen, were stand-up comedians and I always felt I should do it. I was good enough to get paid, I was a finalist in some comedy competitions, but somewhere along the way I lost interest. And once The Office took off, it just seemed easier not to do it’’. In contrast, a passionate Gervais continued with stand-up, thus contributing to his position at the forefront of mainstream comedy and ultimately earning him global success. Merchant confesses he didn’t share that passion with Gervais, ‘’ I never got enough of a kick from performing to warrant driving up and down the motorway eating Ginsters in service stations at midnight. I used to look at Ricky doing stand-up and think. ‘’Why’s he bothering? It’s so much effort’’. For a time, Merchant was happy to bask under the success of the Slough based comedy and his top-rated Sky One show ‘An Idiot Abroad’, until he suddenly had a change of heart. ‘’I just woke up one day and I had the itch again. I felt I’d never really nailed stand-up. So I started doing five or ten minute slots here and there and I’ve been pottering around the circuit for a few years now. This tour is a result of that itch’’. ‘Stephen Merchant Live: Hello Ladies…’ which is being filmed during the tour and is due for UK release in November, centres around Merchant’s chequered romantic history. ‘’I talk about various aspects of my search for romance since the age of 16. For me, there’s nothing funnier than sexual misfortune as a subject for comedy. Everyone understands what’s at stake and the jeopardy involved. There’s a weight to it. If you say to friends, ‘I went on a date last night and it didn’t go well,’ they’ll immediately

Interview | Ron Sexsmith

Canadian singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith makes a stop in Sheffield this September as he tours with his twelfth studio album, ‘Long Player Late Bloomer’, released earlier in the year. The forty-seven year old singer who resides in Toronto, cites Elton John, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen amongst his inspirations. However, unlike his muses, Sexsmith hasn’t had the commercial success deserved to his well crafted, heartfelt tunes. Instead of a string of hits, Sexsmith has created a catalogue of cohesive albums, which have won him praise from contemporaries, such as Bob Dylan, Elton John and Chris Martin. It is recognition from such artists, which lead Sexsmith to open for Elvis Costello who has publically praised his work. Fans of fellow Canadian Leslie Feist can hear her cover of ‘Secret Heart’, penned by Sexsmith- who also co-wrote ‘Brandy Alexander’ with Feist- on her acclaimed album ‘The Reminder’. If you aren’t familiar with his voice, you’re sure to know a few of his impassioned words, which have been covered by a host of well-known artists. We caught up with Sexsmith as he prepares to take to the road and discuss the documentary film ‘Love Shines’ which depicts the past seven years of his life, and the sacrifices he’s made during his thirty years career. You’re about to embark on a tour with your new album, how do you prepare for months on the road? I’ve been trying to rest my voice mainly and put together a set list (which is hard to do the more records you have). ‘Long Player Late Bloomer’ is your latest release. Does the title reflect how you feel about your career? In a way...I feel like I’m a work in progress, and I’m just always trying to get better at singing and writing etc. Things always seem to take me longer in general. Did the admiration from your contemporaries contribute to your reluctance to give up, despite initial poor record sales? It’s always encouraging when somebody you admire says anything positive about what you’re doing. I’m up and down all the time like most people...I don’t know if I would be able to give up even if I wanted to though because being a songwriter, I would just end up writing more songs and getting my hopes up again. Do you feel the documentary film ‘Love Shines’ completely captures the investment you’ve made into writing and recording this new album? It captures a certain aspect of it…I think it shows me at a low point trying to dream big and stand up for myself. The director of the film I think found the whole “struggle” aspect interesting, I mean there was seven years of footage, it could’ve been a comedy.

What inspired you to do the film? Well, truthfully, I didn’t want to make a film at all…I’ve never enjoyed seeing myself on TV or whatever…I just always come off funny looking and awkward. When Doug Arrowsmith started it about seven years ago, I really didn’t know what he was hoping to achieve and I guess part of me thought it would never see the light of day. It was only in the last year of filming when he got some funding and things heated up...and then they were around all the time. Which songs from the new album are you most looking forward to sharing with a live audience? Well, I’ve found that it’s been a fun album to play live in general…it’s just more up-tempo. I find as well, that it has injected some needed energy into the older songs too. How do you find British audiences? Well, Britain was the first place to take notice of me back in the mid90’s. It’s great to feel some momentum there again. I’ve always felt close to it as well, because all of my early influences were from there. Do you get to see much of the cities you visit whilst on tour? Yeah, quite a bit…and we see the inside of many pubs. Are you writing whilst being on the road? Yeah, I’ve pretty much written my entire next record and am now trying to figure out who to work with...any ideas? Many artists have covered your songs. I’m especially interested to know if your contributions to Feist’s album ‘The Reminder’ created some new Sexsmith listeners? I think so…Leslie Feist is a good friend of mine and her success has definitely rubbed off on me a little bit. What is the most rewarding thing about a life dedicated to music? Well, I have so much respect for the craft of song writing and it’s been a big deal for me, just to be able to do it for a living, and to try and add to the “Tower Of Song” in my own way. What has been the biggest sacrifice you’ve made to get to where you currently are? Well…my daughter was just six when I started touring heavily and so I missed out on a lot of her early years as well as many birthdays and family stuff which I regret. What’s next after the tour? Preheat the oven to 200°C.

For the potatoes, heat the olive oil in an ovenproof pan over a high heat. Fry the potatoes for two minutes on each side, until crisp and golden. Add the garlic and cashew nuts, mix together and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Transfer to the oven and roast for five minutes. Transfer to a warm bowl and sprinkle over the parsley. For the prosciutto, heat the oil in a saucepan over a high heat. Fry the prosciutto for one minute on each side, until crisp and golden. Drain on kitchen paper. For the salad, place the oil and lemon juice into a bowl and whisk together with a fork. Add the parsley and basil leaves, mix together with the fork and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. For the scallops, place a saucepan over a high heat. Rub the scallops with the oil and season generously with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Place the scallops into the saucepan and fry for two minutes on each side, or until completely cooked through. To serve, arrange the salad of basil and parsley leaves onto a plate. Add the scallops and prosciutto on top and serve the sautéed potatoes alongside.

Stepping out for a bite to eat on a chilled, summery Sunday evening, I wandered down Ecclesall Road in the midst of many Italian restaurants and cafés, but all I really fancied was a bit of authentic English grub! Where better to try than Relish? Owned by Richard Smith, this restaurant is a homage to Sheffield’s very own Henderson’s Relish (the name, colour palette and bottles of the stuff on the tables give it away!). This is one eatery I’d heard many a good thing about but had not had the opportunity to try.

choice of what type and size of fish I would like and if I wanted skinny or fat chips; this gave you the option of a smaller portion if you were perhaps just peckish and a larger portion if you had a hole to fill. Whilst scouring the menu I noticed Relish do a ‘Beat the Clock’ scheme – this runs daily from 5pm – 7pm and basically means the time you order is the price you pay for your main course. Lucky for me I ordered at 5.38pm, unlucky for me I didn’t choose off the special ‘Beat the Clock’ menu. Our food arrived not too long after ordering and looked delectable. Being a bit of a greedy guts my eyes were bigger than

my belly and unfortunately I was beaten. Feeling rather tired after my substantial meal I decided against dessert and we were efficiently given the bill. Although Relish is not somewhere you’d choose if you wanted something exotically different, the food was scrumptious, the staff were chatty, prices were reasonable and the restaurant was welcoming and cosy. Emma discussed the change with her and recommended a cut, deciding to use the natural curls to their best potential. She also recommended a future colouring treatment – quasi (a slightly longer lasting alternative to semipermanent) to give natural, shiny colour and no regrowth, but full grey coverage. Emma then asked our model to fill in a Prescription Form, which helped Emma to find the perfect products recommended for use on her hair: DesignLine Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner, Dream Mousse, Curl Lock Leave In Moisturiser and Finishing Spray. Chipped nail varnish – the blot on all pampered hands and an impossibility to avoid. Personally I seem to have a physical inadequacy when it comes to nail varnish; those perfectly preened, glossy fingertips become an embarrassing and frustrating mess of chips, smudges and bed linen imprints. So when rumours of a miracle treatment offering rock hard varnish and flawless colour reached my ears, I was eager to try this for myself. Thus my curiosity took me to Top To Toe Professional Beauty Therapy in Crosspool. The salon plays host to Gelac – a new UV gel polish range promising to give longlasting shine. Met by owner Farra and beauty therapist Natalie, I settled down at the nail bar with a welcome latte and biscuit.

Gelac resembles a normal nail varnish and is painted on as usual. As the gel can slide off if tilted before it’s completely dry, Natalie painted my thumbs first so they could be kept flat before moving on to the other nails. She painted on a transparent base coat, which was then dried underneath the UV light, then two coats of the colour. From a range of colours including pink, purple, red and black shades, I’d chosen to go for ‘Rich Raisin’ - a rich, dark plum colour. Over this was layered a clear topcoat, each layer being dried and hardened under the UV light. Natalie removed any excess gel, then repeated the whole process on my other fingers. The result was a set of perfectly polished fingertips; shiny and glossy without a smudge in sight. The polish was hard and good to go immediately – no worry of chips and scratches. Now there’s finally an Antiques place which caters to the ‘modern antique’. The Nichols Building Antiques, Arts and Crafts Centre is more than a display of old junk. The building is unassuming from the outside, just humble brickwork. However, step into the main warehouse of the centre and you step into junk heaven. More vintage and retro than ‘antique’, pieces of every shape and size from the latter half of the twentieth century are on display, from classic style tea sets and flapper

inspired wedding attire to post modern, flower print, hanging globes and retro lava lamps, the main warehouse of the centre is truly a melting pot of modern artefacts, that would have the most ardent collector foaming at the mouth. The most fascinating thing is that aside from the retro pieces so obviously on display, if you look around, you will find hordes of classic literature and boxes upon boxes of vintage editions of Vogue Magazine, dating back to the days Cindy Crawford regularly graced the cover. The best news is that everything in this room is for sale!

FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE is useful for motorists, but it isn’t necessarily needed all the time, so MINI has a smart and fuel efficient answer for this conundrum: the Countryman All4. The car is a ‘crossover’ - a front-wheel drive car in most normal circumstances, but when wheel slip on the front wheels is detected, or if the car is being driven enthusiastically, a special clutch engages drive to the rear wheels to improve traction. It’s useful, not to mention reassuring, if you’re driving in wet, muddy or snowy conditions. The Cooper SD version of the Countryman, under review here, is the most powerful diesel variant in the MINI line-up. As well as four-wheel drive capability, its 2.0 litre 143bhp engine offers a 0-62 sprint of 9.4 seconds and bags of pulling power. In this guise, the car is also capable of towing up to 1000kg on a braked trailer, making it a rather multi-talented motor.

The front is very upright; projecting a confident ‘face’ and it is longer, wider and higher, offering more luggage capacity than a MINI Hatch. In addition, the SD model has a front apron with an extra large air intake and an air scoop on the bonnet. At the rear, the car sports twin exhaust tailpipes exiting in the centre of the rear apron and an eye-catching roof spoiler. Inside, the car is dominated by iconic design characteristics such as grippy sports seats, the trademark central speedometer and neat, funky switch packs. A nifty further feature is the MINI centre rail which runs from front to rear instead of a conventional centre console. It opens up new options for integrating all kinds of storage boxes, cup holders, power chargers, music players, mobile phones and other accessories. However, the Countryman is as much about comfort and traditional practicality as it is innovative style. From the four wide-opening doors to the high-opening rear hatch, it is easy to get into and out of, and a dream to load. The MINI Countryman could prove to be a popular choice of car because the demand for crossover vehicles has grown considerably recently. Many drivers want the best of both worlds: normal saloon-like driving responses as well as the added convenience of soft off-road ability, and the interior flexibility to cope with all the activities that are part of busy modern life. The Cooper SD All4 appears to tick all these boxes and certainly shows that practicality and versatility does not limit the pleasure that can be derived from driving.
