After an early autumn hiatus, Chic Lifestyle is back and we’ve returned with much more for your eyes to feast over. I do hope you’re ready to indulge.

Butler’s Balti make their mark on Broad Lane and James Bond helps shake up some corporate gatherings.

Perhaps a little old before my time, my ideal evening is at The Showroom with a foreign film and a glass (plastic cup) of red, or an acoustic gig at The Leadmill, thus our Flaunt feature has forever been a favourite of mine. So, from this month on we’ve decided to double our coverage of Sheffield’s upcoming events. In keeping with what’s current, this month we bring you interviews with New Zealand songbird Brooke Fraser and British born singer-songwriter Benjamin Francis Leftwhich who are both on the road this autumn with their new albums.

- LIFESTYLE -

Flaunt | Page 8 A newly extended peek at the unmissable events heading for our fair city this month.

Our new features include a faux fur filled double page guide on autumn/winter fashions -selected and penned by the office’s style savvy Geordie- and our guide to the ultimate weekend Mini Break.

Butlers Balti

www.butlersbalti.com

Having established itself as a favourite of the late night student crowds, Butlers Balti has paid its dues; the neon lights have flickered out at their former residence on Brook Hill to make way for an impressive new establishment which opened its doors earlier this month. Despite having only moved a few hundred yards up the road (Butlers Balti can now be found at 44 – 46 Broad Lane), the new restaurant looks and feels worlds apart from its predecessor; a large, modern structure, in which resides a thoroughly inviting bar and seating area. The proprietors have done well to keep the décor simple, attractive, and most importantly, contemporary. “ traditional Indian and Pakistani cuisine ”

service are demonstrated through attentive and polite waiting. The new Butlers Balti wants badly to be a restaurant, not just a curry house, and with a new look and revitalized energy to compliment the well-informed and hugely affordable menu of traditional Indian and Pakistani cuisine, they might just have pulled it off. Opening night plays to a full house, on offer is a buffet of tried and tested favourites – for starters onion bhaji and spiced chicken wings, followed by a buffet selection of Jalfrezi, Masala and Korma, accompanied with rice and Naan. Whilst the absence of the restaurant’s speciality Punjabi and Balti dishes as an opening night gambit was a little disappointing, the indefinitely returning queue of punters keen for seconds is a testament to the power of their well-cooked, authentic curry. Although first night nerves were noticeable, both bar and floor staff were welcoming, knowledgeable and eager to please; the establishment’s new, heightened standards of etiquette and

Hot on the heels of their much anticipated album release “I’m With You’ this summer, one of America’s greatest rock bands embark on their first UK tour since 2006. Having just released the first single ‘The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie’ from their tenth studio album, Anthony Kiedis, Flea, Chad Smith and Josh Klinghoffer are heading to the Motorpoint Arena this November.

Formed in Los Angeles in 1983, the award winning rockers incorporate funk with hip-hop and psychedelic rock, culminating in a formula which has helped them sell over 65 million albums to date. However, it’s been a tumultuous 30 years for the band who’ve struggled with substance abuse, losing their founding member Hilel Slovack to a heroin overdose in 1988. Front man Anthony Kiedis has

had a very public battle with drugs and the band has seen many members come and go. For guitarist Klinghoffer ‘I’m With You’ is his first Chili Peppers recording and this autumn’s tour will be the first chance for UK fans to experience the new lineup. It’s set to be a heady evening of new tracks and firm favourites.

Melancholia // (15) 136 mins September 30th www.showroomworkstation.org.uk

This autumn, Denmark’s most notorious and celebrated director Lars von Trier returns with his much anticipated apocalyptic fantasy drama, Melancholia. Controversial comments at Cannes and Antichrist’s scenes of female circumcision have stirred unsolicited negativity towards the infamous filmmaker, somewhat overshadowing the beautiful pieces he creates. None appear more stunning than Melancholia; his latest delve into depression, dysfunctional families and the demise of the world. The haunting score and dazzling cinematography smack of his previous works, yet with Melancholia, von Trier has taken his unique, creative vision to a new level, rendering cinemagoers speechless. Packed with a stellar international cast including Charlotte Rampling, John Hurt, Kiefer Sutherland, Stellan Skarsgard, Charlotte Gainsbourg and staring a surprising choice of lead in Kirste n Dunst, Melancholia looks set to take it’s rightful place amongst Dancer In The Dark and Antichrist as von Trier’s greatest, most thought-provoking works.

Bill Bailey //

Friday 4th November www.motorpointarenasheffield.co.uk

In the wake of a sell out West End run, comedian and musician Bill Bailey is en route to Sheffield with his ‘Dandelion Mind’. An array of trademark musical interludes are sandwiched between stories and observations, in Bailey’s new show which is loosely based on the theme of doubt. Demonstrating skills on new instruments, both ancient and modern, Bailey regresses to his youth and returns with a brand-new French Disco re-working of Gary Numan hit ‘Cars’, indulges in some Iranian hip-hop and laments about punk heroes in a way only this surrealist comic can. Add some Wurzel inspired remixes of classic German techno and a rant on Michael Winner and you have your standard evening with the beguiling Bill Bailey.

End Of The Rainbow

Monday 14th November - Saturday 19th November Lyceum Theatre

‘’She had this magnetism, but it had nothing to do with statuesque features. It was just about this really unusual personality’’- Rufus Wainwright on Judy Garland. Taking the West End by storm with her portrayal of the tough, compelling and talented Judy Garland, Olivier Award-winning actress Tracie Bennett brings the ‘End Of The Rainbow’ to Sheffield’s Lyceum theatre this autumn. Beginning in London in the winter of 1968, the production sees Garland set to make her comeback, yet again. Battling an exhausting schedule and a heady mix of drugs and alcohol, the determined performer is seeking to reclaim her crown as the greatest talent of her generation. Terry Johnson directs Bennett in this thrilling, moving, hilarious and tragic tale of the fallen star. Featuring a six-piece onstage band, End of the Rainbow includes Garland’s most memorable songs The Man That Got Away, Come Rain Or Come Shine, The Trolley Song and, of course, Somewhere Over The Rainbow. Imelda May

Tuesday 22nd November O2 Academy Sheffield

Hailed by artists as disparate as Jools Holland, David Bowie and Jeff Beck, London based Dubliner Imelda May is steadily seducing the music scene with her Rockabilly Blues. The award winning singer-songwriter has already achieved great success with her 2008 release ‘Love Tattoo’, knocking Bruce Springsteen off the top of the Irish album chart and becoming the first Irish female artist to secure a number one position in almost twenty years. May, who cites Billie Holiday and Elmore James amongst her inspirations, takes to the road this month with her much anticipated new release. ‘Mayhem’ sees Imelda channel the spirit of an early PJ Harvey as she develops her unique fusion of modern and classic genres. May’s unique style, both vocally and visually, will have you mistaking modern day Sheffield for a blues bar of the 1950s.

Rumer

Saturday 12th November Sheffield City Hall - Irwin Oval Hall

The Observer called her ‘’the most exciting new talent of the moment’’ and the Sunday Times described her debut album ‘Seasons of My Soul’ as being ‘’sensationally good’’. So it’s no wonder tickets to see highly acclaimed Anglo-Pakistani singer songwriter Rumer are selling fast. With album sales already at half a million in the UK alone, the soulful jazz singer -who has been likened to Karen Carpenter- has already built up an extensive live following. About to embark on her biggest tour to date, the thirty-something will play various cities across the UK, making the final stop of her winter tour at London’s Royal Albert Hall. It’s been a whirlwind twelve months for Rumer- real name Sarah Joyce- who less than a year ago was supporting Jools Holland at the iconic venue, which she is now scheduled to headline.

King Charles

Monday 14th November The Leadmill

A blend of quickfire MC’ing, psychedelic acoustica, hard rock riffery and earnest folk melodies are what to expect from the lion haired King Charles when he takes to The Leadmill stage this November. Claiming to have been raised by polar bears, the quirky Londoner- aka Charles Costa- spent his youth bonding with cellos, singing in choirs and discovering folk and country via Bob Dylan. Now as an adult, Charles laments about love, inevitable death and crocodiles in his oddly intoxicating Devendra Banhart-esque style. Performing with the vigor, energy and showmanship of a great rock band, Charles creates a live experience not to be missed.

Sigur Rós presents INNI

Wednesday 9th November // 8.30pm // The Showroom, showing as part of Special Screenings

Following their 2007 tour documentary Heima, the ethereal Icelandic post rock band Sigur Rós return with a breathtaking new film, Inni. In stark contrast to the kaleidoscopic and colourful appearance of their debut film Heima- a piece which positioned the group in the context of their Icelandic homeland, providing geographical, historical and social perspectives on their music- Inni is a spare and somewhat monochromatic depiction of how it feels for the both band and fans to experience Sigur Rós live. Filmed in a manner that invites both intimacy

and claustrophobia, the film successfully cocoons the viewer in a one-on-one relationship with the band. Filmed during their live performance at North London’s Alexandra Palace in 2008, the film is interspersed with archival footage to give viewers the full scope of Sigur Rós’ origins, influence, originality and evolution. This one-off screening is one not to be missed.

Interview | Brooke Fraser

BROOKE FRASER Interview

In the wake of sellout tours across the U.S, Australia and her native New Zealand, singer-songwriter Brooke Fraser heads to Europe this Autumn with songs from her most recent offering ‘Flags’. Hailed by critics, Fraser’s third studio album blends melodic folk-pop with poignant lyrics, culminating in a creation ‘drenched in beauty’. We caught up with the twenty seven year old Kiwi ahead of her show across the Pennines, in the musical mecca of Manchester.

Interview | Brooke Fraser

“ I needed to take a step back for ‘Flags’ and figure out a way to tell my stories in a way that ensured I didn’t feel like I’d been hit by the Emo train every night after playing them live.” www.brookefraser.com u@brookefraser f - brookefraser w - brookefrasertv

How are you preparing for your impending tour of Europe? I actually got very ill a few weeks back and had to cancel my Asian dates. I completely lost my voice for the first time ever. It was a big reality check and slightly scary. I basically flew home and was quarantined, resting up at home and making sure I was fighting fit to head back to Europe. I hear you’re planning something a bit special for this tour, can you give us any clues? Well, I did a brief Europe/UK run in March/ April with a stripped back show - it was only myself and two other players. This time we’re coming back with the full band, we’ve put a few twists in the show and a quarter of the songs are ones we’ve never played in Europe or the UK before. There’s some fun surprises chucked in there. How did the process of writing your most recent album ‘Flags’ differ from your previous projects, as I know you’ve written much more through character this time around? Yeah, after the intense and heavily personal songs of my second record Albertine’, I knew that I needed to take a step back for ‘Flags’ and figure out a way to tell my stories in a way that ensured I didn’t feel like I’d been hit by the Emo train every night after playing them live. The answer to that was to take a more narrative approach and use characters. It’s really worked for me and consequently I’m feeling inspired and creatively healthy, as opposed to this stage during the last album. How would you describe the experience of opening for David Bowie during his tour of New Zealand? It was one magical night many moons ago (seven years or so ago!). It was an honour, obviously, and Mr Bowie was extremely cordial and warm. A great experience. A self-taught musician and singer, what first inspired you to pick up the guitar? Piano is my first instrument, actually, and I studied that formally for ten years or so from the age of seven. A few years in I discovered writing - then a few years after that I was sick of writing slow piano ballads and so picked up the guitar. Which artists influenced your desire to become a musician? I was playing music before I ever really heard music. My parents are not musical and we didn’t have records playing around the house when I was growing up, so I only ever heard music on the radio in the car! In that way I feel I was a bit behind... so many of my musician friends are really knowledgeable about all this music that is so seminal - but they first

became hooked on it when they were kids leafing through their parents’ music collections and so had a good ten years of exposure to things before the age at which I might have discovered the same things. The artists I did discover early-ish (around twelve/thirteen ) were people like Paula Cole and James Taylor. You’ve had huge success in your homeland and more recently in the US, is being recognised across Europe important to you also? I love Europe and I jump at any chance to spend time here. Will you have much downtime on this tour to explore? No, I’m afraid! On tours like this one I see most of the world from a plane/train/bus/car window. Sometimes it’s tough because even if you get a day off, your body might demand sleep and that must come before exploring. Though if I’m feeling rested and strong, I’ll buy a TimeOut app and put on my adventure shoes. What with your music, blog writing and charity work, how do you find the time to balance a personal life? My husband is able to travel with me for 80% of the time, which is really important. My marriage comes first, always. Travelling so much of the time you do miss out on important events in the lives of the people you love though - weddings, births, etc. As a well-established musician, does your own success compel you to highlight the plight of those less fortunate? With a platform of any size comes influence... Bono called it ‘currency’. I’ve always hoped to spend mine wisely. What has been the most memorable moment of your music career so far? This year has been pretty memorable. Had a moment a few months ago when I realised my last album ‘Albertine’ was released in four countries, but ‘Flags’ (by the time it is out everywhere it is scheduled to be out) will have been released in almost 40 countries around the world. It’s pretty mind blowing. It’s been an astronomical leap. Have you experienced any downsides to the fame you’ve achieved? Of course, but let’s not dwell on those! What’s next after the tour? Another tour. No rest for the wicked.

Chic Lifestyle Magazine | Issue 38

A firm Fearne Cotton favourite, Benjamin Francis Leftwich’s sentimental folk-pop is making quite the impact as it softly seeps onto mainstream stations. We rouse the English singer-songwriter from his slumber to talk about success, social networking sabotage and his current autumn tour. Hi Benjamin, how does this interview find you? Well thanks, I’ve just woken up…. I’m lying in bed wearing my coat, it’s so cold. You’ve just returned from Leeds/Reading, how did it feel to be part of the line-up instead of the crowd? Yeah Leeds and Reading were cool, I went to Leeds a lot when I was younger so it was really cool to go back and play it. How are you preparing for weeks on the road this autumn? I’m sleeping lots and trying to rest and not party too much! Which songs are you most looking forward to sharing with a live audience? I don’t know yet really, I always kind of figure out my favourite songs a few days into the tour. What goes through your head right before you take to the stage? I just kind of try and focus and be chilled. What impact has the album’s success had on your day to day life? It hasn’t affected my life outside of music at all really… I guess more people know who I am now but I find that a bit weird and I just kind of do the same things I’ve always done and try and see my friends as much as I can. A seemingly quiet fellow, how are you coping with all the media interest? I love starting false rumours about myself on Twitter… I think that’s the funniest thing to do with regard to media… the media are mostly aliens… Which artists most influenced your desire to be a singer-songwriter? I’m a big fan of The Beatles, they were the first band I really got into when I was young… then I discovered more singer song/ writers like Ryan Adams and Bruce Springsteen. I guess they are my favorite, I love all their albums and most of their songs are great… I think Ryan Adams and Bruce Springsteen have a real energy that you can hear on the records… I love that. Will you write whilst being on the road, or find a retreat after the chaos of touring? I usually write a little bit on the road, but it is pretty hectic so it’s not always easy. I’m hoping to go away to the Lake District in January and write and record a bit there. Are you already feeling the pressure for the next album? Not really. I’m looking forward to it…. I just need to make sure I take the time to do it right I guess. Other than music, what else inspires you to write? I read a lot so I get a couple of ideas or stories from reading but mainly it’s just things I see around me when I’m out or with friends. I get inspired by the same things as anyone else I just have my own weird way of interpreting it.

What would a perfect day for Benjamin Francis Leftwich look like? I would wake up wearing my new coat… preferably with a girl…. I would then have some tea with milk and 2 sugars and go and chill in my garden for about 15 minutes. Then I would go into town and get some breakfast, then me and some friends would go and chill some more in the big gardens in York, Suddenly Bruce Springsteen would appear and sit with us and play the whole of Nebraska on his acoustic guitar, then we would all chill some more, then a flying yellow dragon would appear and me and my friends and Bruce would all get on and fly to the most amazing water park in the world with loads of sick slides. After we were done we could get the dragon to take us back to York and drop us by the river, then we could maybe have a BBQ by the river and go for a night swim. Aside from listening to Ryan Adams and playing the Xbox, what else occupies your downtime? I like seeing friends and reading and going to the cinema… normal stuff I guess…. I like eating too. And I can cook a little bit but not too well! I see you’ve created a photo blog on your website, is photography another interest of yours? Yeah, I love photography, I’m no good at it personally but I have some books on it and it’s always interested me. If you weren’t doing music, where else could you see yourself? I’m not too sure…. I would probably have moved to Sydney…. I love it over there. How much creative input do you have towards your music videos? Quite a lot. Between me and my label and the video director we usually talk about stuff a lot until we’re all happy on the vibe. Who’s currently on the Leftwich playlist? Lucinda Williams, The Mutton Birds, The Streets, Fionn Regan, Ryan Adams. What has been the most exciting moment of this journey so far? Playing Glastonbury this summer was really cool, I’d never been before so it was pretty special for me. What’s next for Benjamin Francis Leftwich? I need to get up and have a shower and maybe some tea.

Pan Fried Venison with Goats’ Cheese and Roasted Red Peppers. You no longer have to be a European aristocrat to enjoy the delectable meat of the deer. Quality cuts of this fine meat are available from farmer’s markets and now, most high-end butchers. September is the season to sample this succulent meat in its prime. Add a generous splash of red wine and see in the autumn with this tender, tasty dish.

To Cook: Prepared in 40 minutes, cooked in 15 minutes, serves 2. 1. Remove venison from fridge and allow to stand at room temperature. 2. Chop all the garlic cloves and the chilli, then add to a bowl with the red wine. Add two tablespoons of Worcester sauce. Mix well, then introduce the venison steaks and allow to rest for 30 minutes. 3. Deseed the peppers and slice into quarters. Rub the pepper skin with the olive oil. Place under grill, skin side up, until dark brown or black. 4. Wrap peppers in tin foil and allow to cool. Once cooled, peel the skin from the peppers, slice into strips and set aside. 5. Remove the venison from the marinade and place in a medium to hot frying pan or on a griddle. Cook for approximately 5 minutes on each side, until pink. 6. Remove venison from pan and replace with the remaining marinade, simmer to reduce. 7. Lay the venison pieces on a plate of rocket and top with the peppers. Crumble over the goats’ cheese and drizzle a small amount of the marinade over the side of the plate. Serve immediately.

Fig Heaven

Here at Chic we believe in eating with the seasons and extend this philosophy to beverages, thus, this month’s cocktail is infused with the fresh sweetness of the fig.

Fig Liqueur: 1. 6oz fresh black mission figs 2. 1 litre vodka 3. 8oz sugar

Cocktail:

Juice of ¼ orange
 Juice of ½ lime
½ oz. fig liqueur 1 oz. vodka

To make the Fig Liqueur:

Infuse the figs into the vodka. Once infused, pour the contents into a large saucepan and add the sugar. Cook the mixture on a high heat until the alcohol begins to evaporate. Reduce the mixture by 20% then chill in a bowl of ice. Once chilled, strain with a cheesecloth.

For the Cocktail:

Add ingredients to a shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a Martini glass. Garnish with a herb of your choice, or cucumber for an extra fresh taste.

VENISON FACTS Meat from the Roe deer is considered amongst chefs to be the best for cooking. As with most meats, animals which roam freely, rather than those intensely farmed, produce a superior meat. Cook venison as you would beef, compensating for the low fat content with the use of marinades.

WasabiSabi

www.wasabisabi.co.uk

Although it dominates a large corner on London Road, one can be forgiven for thus far missing the culinary delights of Sheffield’s award winning Japanese restaurant WasabiSabi. The restaurant sits rather reserved, behind a facade of veiled windows and has done since it opened in 2004. What awaits inside however, is a rainbow of edible delights for the taste buds and admirable skills at the griddle. The Japanese restaurant is split into two sides, both with a very different ambience. Firstly is the restaurant’s main pull, Teppanyaki. A main attraction for WasabiSabi, the Teppanyaki menu boasts a chef who cooks your food on a griddle at the centre of the table. It’s pure showmanship and creates a great party atmosphere, especially if you’re enjoying a group dining experience. The Teppanyaki side of the restaurant offers set menus with 6 courses starting at £20.50. The quality of the food at WasabiSabi is excellent, fresh meats, fish and vegetables are cooked to your liking by the accomplished and amiable chefs. There’s nothing else like it in Sheffield, so it is advisable to book. “ great party atmosphere”

The other side of the restaurant is a lot more laid back and is the perfect place to introduce yourself to the freshest, tastiest sushi and sashimi available in Sheffield. Slices of raw salmon, tuna, octopus, squid and other freshly sourced fish are available on the ‘sashimi trial’ garnished with hot wasabi. For seasoned sashimi fiends there is the choice of ‘deluxe sashimi’, which arrives at the table on a large wooden boat and is perfect for sharing. Too squeamish for raw fish? Then the menu boasts an array of cooked dishes to suit most palettes. From spicy noodle soups, grilled beef fillet skewers to another speciality of the restaurant; Tempura-a light Japanese batter coating fish, chicken or vegetables. All dishes arrive impeccably presented by the friendly and attentive staff. This is an award winning Japanese restaurant boasting unmissable dining, both for those seeking a romantic dinner or for a group dining experience. The hospitable staff help create the most inviting atmosphere in this beautiful restaurant, which I consider to be reasonably priced and certainly the best place to sample fresh fish in Sheffield. This is one restaurant I’m always eager to return to. ...............

Interview | Tommy Tiernan

-TOMMY TIERNANInterview

Already a legend in his home country of Ireland, Tommy Tiernan’s reputation as a witty, energetic and somewhat controversial comedian is now gaining rapid momentum here in the UK. Thanks to stints on Live at the Apollo and Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, the forty something Irishman now has a whole new audience to captivate with his high-energy, unapologetic ramblings. We caught up with the self-proclaimed ‘grumpy’ comic as he prepares to take his new show ‘POOT’ to the road this autumn.

“I lean more towards the eternal than the recent, although I am quite fond of Jedward... s’up John, s’up Edward”

www.tommytiernan.com u@Tommedian f - Tommy-Tiernan

Hello Tommy, how does this interview find you? Between ideas, sheets and haircuts. When did comedy first come into your life? I was raised by clowns so I’d say it was a constant. How did you break onto the circuit? In the late 1990s the comedy circuit was a lot like bars and building sites. All you had to say was that you were Irish and they gave you a chance. What goes through your head as you’re about to take to the stage? The howling of the man bat locked in the madhouse. Do you remember your first time? My first ever gig lasted 45 mins but I only remember the 35 seconds that I was accidently funny for. How would you summarise your journey to the point you’re at now? Summarise? Have we just had an ad break? How are you preparing for your upcoming tour? By being grumpy and hassled and then out of nowhere laughing gently to myself. What can fans expect to see from your autumn shows? If I told them that they mightn’t come. Are there any recent events that you can’t wait to touch upon with a live audience? I lean more towards the eternal than the recent, although I am quite fond of Jedward...s’up John, s’up Edward.

As it’s November, surely it’s almost time for you to cause your annual bout of offence and controversy, anything spring to mind? Is the Dalai Lama half camel? (Sorry) How does it feel to be condemned for touching on ‘controversial’ subjects, when others seem to escape the media’s wrath? The controversial tag is just a journalistic conceit. Which contemporary comedians rouse a cackle in you? So many...Sean Lock, Patton Oswalt, Mike Birbiglia, Demetri Martin, David O’Doherty and on and on and on. You have a very hectic tour schedule, what draws you to take to the road so frequently? Five mortgages. Will you ever attempt to once again break the record for the longest stand up comedy show? I hope so. I did the last one over the Easter weekend. Next time I’m going to do Ramadan. What have been the best perks of a career in comedy? Earning a living from what occurs naturally to me and staying in nice hotels. After the tour, what’s next for Tommy Tiernan? More touring, less houses.

Tiernan will take to the Sheffield City Hall stage on Thursday 27th October. For a full tour schedule, visit :

The Top Five Tricks Your Make Up Bag Should Never Be Without

The Bag

This issue we’ve delved deep into our make up bag to dig out those long-forgotten treats, returning to a more Autumnal look as the leaves start to turn. Take a peek at our definitive guide to facial fusses to ensure you don’t miss a trick, and on our never-ending search of the city’s beauty boudoirs, we found ourselves at Salon 229 for a pampering treat.

Louis Vuitton Cosmetic Pouch £255.00

In ever-stylish monogram canvas, this is top of any fashionista’s wish list, with its shiny golden brass details and textile lining its a forever lasting stylish piece. www.louisvuitton.com

1. Concealer

Late night? Never let it show by hiding those dark, under eye circles from view. Dab on with your ring finger (it’s the weakest finger so will gently add some coverage) and choose a shade only a tad lighter than your foundation or skin colour. We all have those pesky spots and blemishes we’d like to do without – tap on a bit of creamy concealer then cover with powder or foundation to blend it in.

3. Blusher

For a full boost of volume, dig the brush in at the root of the lash and zig-zag out to reach your mascara’s full potential.

Apply with a blusher brush, sucking in your cheeks to bring out your cheekbones, concentrating on the apples of your cheeks for a cute look or sweep from high cheekbone down the line of your upper jaw for a more dramatic effect.

An eye without mascara is a naked eye. A sweep of mascara takes 30 seconds and is the most important of all eye make up. Go for black (just say no when it comes to electric blue) and even the slightest touch with the brush can make a difference, adding length, flirty flutter and definition to the eye.

4. Bronzer

5. Eyebrow Pencil

Brush a small amount on your cheekbones, nose, chin and forehead – wherever the sun would naturally hit. A brush of bronzer on your collarbone will further add a kiss of sun to your appearance and can even be used to emphasize cleavage when used to its best advantage!

When applying, first pluck the brow into the ideal shape, trim any straggling hairs then draw in the brow. Only a bit of pencil is needed, don’t go wildly colouring in, but follow the natural brow line, giving a definite start by the inner eye and taper out. Keep the pencil sharp for a perfect result, and ensure both brows match!

One to be cautious with – an overload of bronzer will result in an embarrassingly orange appearance. However, a brief dab of bronzing powder here and there will add a healthy, sunkissed glow without going down the tricky fake tan route.

2. Mascara

Chic Lifestyle Magazine | Issue 38

A defined brow is a beautiful one, opening up and drawing attention to the eye. Be careful with the shade though – too dark and you could soon be looking cartoon-like. Think about the colour of your natural brow and hair colour and try to compliment them.

A pasty face won’t do you any favours, but a flush of colour will. Choose a shade to match your skin tone, eye and hair colour (blondes – pink, brunettes – pink or apricot, dark tones – deep pink) and a vibrancy you can tailor to the occasion (a brief brush for the day and a deep sweep for the night).

I popped down to the salon and was in for a treat – microdermabrasion, back massage and pedicure, performed by therapist Kirsty, who’s been in the world of beauty for nearly eight years. First up was the microdermabrasion, a treatment which would help to smooth my skin and remove any blemishes. Kirsty first cleansed my face to remove dirt and make up, then started the treatment itself; the process consists of diamond tip crystals brushed over the skin with a vacuum, to stimulate new skin cells and collagen. Starting with a less abrasive head, Kirsty worked over my face, progressing to different suction levels and changing the head to target specific areas. The treatment doesn’t hurt at all, quite relaxing - a deep cleanse! Once finished, my skin was moisturised, and on close inspection felt immediately softer, smoother and clearer.

After ten minutes Kirsty unwrapped my feet and massaged my feet and legs to totally relax me, then turned her attention to my toes, pushing down my cuticles, filing and buffing the nails, then painted with a deep red wine shade. The result? Perfectly polished, glossy toe nails on pampered feet. The salon offers a ten per cent discount for all NHS, nearby Asda and Sheffield City Council employees, with treatments three for two every Wedneday. Special packages, parties and gift vouchers are available.

Next came the Stress Relief Back Massage, tailored to suit each client. Concentrating on the areas suffering from fatigue and tension, Kirsty massaged in stress relief oil, really relaxing me and soothing my tired muscles. After this came the pedicure, using sweet smelling Kaeso products. Sat in the special pedicure chair, my feet were first soaked to cleanse and soften skin, then Kirsty buffed and removed any hard skin from my heels, and rubbed in exfoliator to smooth my skin. She then applied a nourishing foot mask, wrapping my feet up in bags then in toasty heated mitts, trapping in the

Rivals

www.rivalshairandbeauty.co.uk

Shallow I know, but I was undeniably anxious about letting a new salon loose on my locks. I’m usually a £50 a cut kind of girl, I generally believe you pay for what you get, but today I’m feeling open for change (ish). Childhood flashbacks of being dragged to the local ‘barber’ shop to be blasted with cold, stagnant water from a flower sprayer have always prevented me from seeking an out of town salon in later life. So it was with trepidation that I travelled to Abbeydale Road in search of Rivals. Upon my arrival I was greeted with a warm welcome from owner Tracey Wright and Lynsay Mayo and part time stylist Zoe Pearce, quite the rarity for a hair salon in my experience. The down-to-earth, inviting atmosphere was certainly instrumental in calming my nerves.

My dull, not so luscious locks were peppered with split ends and in dire need of some long awaited attention. Welcoming me to the chair was Zoe Pearce, a stylist with ten years experience, who I discovered had trained at one of Ecclesall Road’s most established salons. The panic was now almost a distant memory. We first went through the consultation where I expressed to Zoe my anxieties about trying out a new salon and told her I was looking for a simple trim to define the few layers I had and of course to eliminate my split ends. After a fragrant, generous lathering of a repairing shampoo and conditioner and a relaxing head massage, I was back in the chair. Zoe certainly boasts some skills with the scissors and snipped my tresses with the precision of a perfectionist. Throughout the cut we chatted –may I add none of the clichéd ‘when’s your next holiday?’ lines were thrown at me- and the experience of trying this newly opened salon went from daunting to pleasurable. I was extremely happy with the cut and style Zoe had created for me. I’m usually the first to dash home and restyle my freshly coiffured locks, but Zoe had taken note of how I wear my hair and styled it to my tastes, rather than her own. The finished result was fantastic; my brunette barnet was smooth and glossy, my split ends eradicated and my layers redefined. “ Crystal Clear Facials ”

prices. Other offers include their Crystal Clear Flash Facial treatment, which at £50 for 3 treatments could save you more than 50% compared to what other local salons charge. They may not be able to boast a high-end locale such as Ecclesall Road or prices to induce a tear, but the stylists at Rivals can boast an inviting atmosphere and superior scissor skills. Zoe is a great asset to the Abbeydale Road salon and I’d highly recommend her professional skills and personable demeanour. In addition to the wonders they can do with your tresses, Rivals also provide an array of expert beauty treatments, including manicures, threading and Crystal Clear Facials, to name but a few. No need to wait for that 3am e-mail from a discount voucher website, Rivals are dedicated to providing quality treatments at the lowest prices. Currently the salon is offering a Full Head Colour, Conditioning Treatment, Cut and Finish for only £35, a remarkable saving in comparison to High Street

The creative coiffeurs at Wigs & Warpaint continue to work their mane magic. Chic’s beauty expert Kate lets stylist Natalie Shaffi loose on her locks.

After

First off was the colour consultation, in which it was decided Kate would have medium highlights of two different blondes. A golden brunette, semi-permanent colour would be applied in-between the foils to add richness. Then followed the application of the dye. Kate’s hair was then washed with Wella Colour Saver Brilliance shampoo and a post colour treatment was applied to lock in colour and repair damage. A toner was then applied to give a golden blonde hue. Macadamia oil (a leave-in treatment) was applied to nourish split ends.

Before

Kate’s hair was then blow-dried with a paddle and round brush to create volume. The hair was spritzed with Bumble & Bumble Holding Spray and curled with small spiral tongues. The hair was then half plaited and twisted through the back, pinned and sprayed with Bumble & Bumble Does It All Styling Spray to add hold. The style was completed with Sebastian Shine Spay.
