The burgeoning blossoms of spring are certainly inspiring some added creativity in Sheffield these upcoming weeks. Poetry festivals, guerilla film screenings and quirky Northern street art are to be the sights and sounds for anyone taking a saunter around Sheffield this April. Mother’s Day is looming thus we’ve sourced some extravagant gift ideas, as well as some very palatable menus to sample in the company of mother dearest.

The subtle sounds of Ella Fitzgerald, an arousing aroma of roasted coffee beans and the sweet scents of rose petal lemonade all emanate from Ecclesall Road’s Cocoa confectionary. However this isn’t your average sweet shop, but rather an enchanted wonderland of all things edible.

goods. Quality is paramount to chocolate lovers Anna and Kate who are passionate about producing high quality confectionary and protests against the production of cheap, mass -produced ‘’chocolate’’ that is leaving beautiful Indonesian Orangutans without a home *weep*.

Upon entering you could mistake this petite, elaborate, quaint and charming chamber as one more at home on the labyrinth like streets of Paris’ Montmartresomething enforced as you peruse the glass jars brimming with Dolly Mixtures, Fizzy Wizzies and Midget Gems whilst Piaf plays on the gramophone. Cocoa is not only a stop off for a traditional pick ‘n’ mix or refreshing cloudy lemonade to go. You can sit soft on the paisley sofas whilst slurping pure melted chocolate-accompanied with chilli, cinnamon or ginger and a teeny grater (fit for a Borrower)- whilst deciding whether to go for a cupcake, Macaroon or Belgian waffle.

It seems when it comes to Spoils, Cocoa could be mentioned every month. The selection of gifts both edible and collectable changes frequently, but this time it’s the menu. Adding a healthier alternative to coffee the ladies introduce Cocoa Nib ‘coffee’ to Sheffield. Made by grinding cocoa beans, mixing with hot water and serving in a cafetiere, it is meant to improve focus, alertness and contains nutrients to promote happiness. Admittedly not so healthy but synonymous with indulgence are the new selection of homemade cakes, macaroons and Belgian waffles. Wash it down with a Black Forest Gateau Hot Chocolate and you’ll be rolling out of Cocoa like Violet Beauregarde.

When they’re not roasting beans in the jungles of Grenada, proprietress’ and best chums Kate and Anna spend their time scouring the land for scrumptious treats to tempt. Students of the Chocolate Academy, the ladies are currently in the midst of concocting their own cocoa bean based

FLAUNT|REVIEW April is the month to allow your skin to be soaked from the showers of culture. It is the month when art dominates the streets and overheard whispers are those of poems.

Sensoria - UK Festival of Music/Film/Digital April 29th- May 8th Venues across Sheffield

The end of April sees the return of Sensoria, the UK’s annual festival of music and film. Now in it’s fourth year, the festival is a heady mix of feature film screenings, live performances, exhibitions and talks which take place at venues across Sheffield. Sensoria is notorious for its quirky and innovative use of unusual locales spanning the city; from film screenings at Sheffield Cathedral, the historic Butcher Works and guerilla- style projections screened against the backdrop of Sheffield structures (A Wall Is A Screen) to the underwater beats emanating from within the Olympic diving pool at Ponds Forge. Working to raise inspiration, encourage new and emerging talent and priding itself on accessibility, Sensoria showcases the musical heritage and creative innovation for which our city is renowned. The festival’s heart truly resides here in the Steel City.

Sheffield Poetry Festival The Slutcracker

Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito/Puccini’s II tabarro & Gianni Schicchi

April 1st-3rd - Various Locations

Sheffield Lyceum Theatre

Poetry lives and breathes in Sheffield, thus it’s the intention of the very first Sheffield Poetry Festival to prove just that. Five poetry organisations, along with writing groups and individuals with a proclivity for poetry have collaborated to unite as many varieties of poetic events imaginable. The eclectic programme has something to suit all poetic tastes and brings some major names to the city, as well as showcasing the talents of local poets.

The English Touring Opera make a welcome return to the boards of Sheffield as they take residence at the Lyceum Theatre for two evenings this April. They return with the treat of three rarely toured masterpieces by composers Mozart and Puccini.

Taking place across the city, with performance venues including The Showroom Cinema, The Workstation, Bank Street Arts, The Riverside, The Lescar, Sheffield Children’s Library and the Sheffield Institute of Arts Gallery, the three day festival is a treat for those tempted by all things poetic. 8 FLAUNT | REVIEW

Mozart’s most magnificent piece and one of his final works La clemenza de Tito is an epic tale of terrorism, betrayal and forgiveness. Puccini’s II tabarro (The Cloak) and Gianni Schicchi could hardly be any more different. One is a moody romance, culminating in a grotesque murder, the other a sparkling, beautiful and witty comedy about a family inheritance set in Florence. These stage rarities make for an exquisite, unique evening of opera.

“Creative” Lenny Henry: Cradle to Rave Lyceum Theatre - April 16th

Fresh from an award-winning stint in Northern Broadside’s Othello, Lenny Henry has banished the Bard in favour of the beats as he pedals his brand new one-man show around the UK, landing for one night only here at the Lyceum Theatre. Returning to his roots, Henry’s subject matter is the thing he loves the most- music. After all, it was his love for Elvis Presley and the subsequent impersonations that first propelled him into the spotlight in 1975. He pays tribute in great detail to the music which has accompanied him throughout the years and even has a go himself at twinkling the ivories, thus beware.

Ian Baker Exhibition: Caricatures of the stars.Northern Ballet Sheffield Workstation April 11th- 29th.

Katie Melua April 22nd. - Sheffield City Hall

Singer songwriter Katie Melua returns to the city following the May 2010 release of her fourth studio album. The hugely successful singer-songwriter- who in 2006 was named as the UK’s best selling female artist and Europe’s highest selling European artist under 30- will be playing the intimate show at the Irwin Mitchell Oval Hall. Melua was plucked from music school obscurity by British songwriter, musician and producer Mike Batt who was looking for an artist to ‘’sing jazz and blues in an interesting way’’. It was back in 2003 when Terry Wogan first championed the sweet but sultry sounds of Melua’s first single ‘The closest thing to crazy’ on his popular Radio 2 breakfast show, thus propelling her into critical acclaim and mainstream success. Since then she has had platinum albums, spent many weeks in the charts and embarked on sold out world tours. In 2006 she even broke a Guinness World Record for playing the deepest underwater concert at 303 metres below sea level. It’s sure to be a charming evening of beautiful music and poignant lyrics from this critically acclaimed chanteuse.

With works featured in various popular publications, greeting cards, advertising, television and product design, Ian Baker is one of Britain’s most sought-after and recognised cartoonists. Readers of Esquire, The Times, The Independent and most notably Private Eye will be familiar with Baker’s distinctive drawings. This April the Workstation is home to a free exhibit featuring a collection of his works. Entitled Caricatures of the stars, it will run from the 11th-29th. Amongst Baker’s most recent projects is the James Bond Collection- a series of caricatures of all the major characters from the film franchise, all of which are available as signed prints, postcards and greeting cards. A huge success in the field, works by Baker can be found amidst the permanent collections at the London Cartoon Museum and the Cartoon and Karikatur Museum in Switzerland. Prints, calendars and greetings cards plus more information on the artist himself can be found at www.221artstore.co.uk See www.showroomworkstation.org.uk for exhibition details. FLAUNT | REVIEW

No matter how old a mother is, she watches her middle-aged children for signs of improvement.

Florida Scott-Maxwell April 3rd is the day to salute mother dearest. Religious traditions aside, the reason most of us hurriedly pack into Paperchase is because of a little known woman from West Virginia. A printed card means nothing except that you are too lazy to write to the woman who has done more for you than anyone in the world. And candy! You take a box to Mother and then eat most of it yourself. A pretty sentiment. Anna Jarvis Anna Jarvis was the woman who inadvertently brought about the traditions to which the western world adheres upon celebrating Mother’s Day. In 1912 Jarvis proposed an apostrophe be placed within the phrase ‘Mothering Sunday’ thus coining the phrase ‘Mother’s Day’. Subsequently Jarvis campaigned for the day to be recognised as a holiday and succeeded in 1914 when ‘Mother’s Day’ was recognised as a national holiday. This was all in aid of her beloved mother and confident who had recently passed. Initially the day was honoured just as Jarvis had envisioned; simple white carnations adored to reflect maternal purity, a note or a day relived from chores. Simply a day to show much needed gratitude to your maker. But consumerism was soon to prevail and Jarvis became embittered with the commercial connotations attached to the holiday she had created, ergo she was to spend the rest of her days campaigning in poverty against encroachers, sadly ending that battle in vain within the confines of an asylum until her death.

FEATURE | MOTHERS DAY

I wanted it to be a day of sentiment, not profit Jarvis who invested her whole life lobbying for this day would no doubt berate you for buying a card, however we at Chic maintain there is no shame in resorting to material gifts as a display of gratitude. We do maintain though, that sentiment should always be paramount.

Whilst we at Chic don’t encourage Complexes Oedipus, we do encourage for you to treat your maker this upcoming Mothering Sunday. We allow the feast to reign supreme on any occasion.

She’s overfed you for years (whether you liked it or not) and April 3rd is the day for payback. Of course we aren’t suggesting you strap her down to fill her mush with mashed vegetables, but rather that you treat her to the culinary delights of Sheffield’s best ‘Mother’s Day’ inspired menus.

WANDERLUST|ANTALYA ANTALYA

It seems that warm English summers are fast becoming a fond but distant memory, prompting more and more reason to escape to warmer climates, pronto. Granted once a year we are treated to a short spell of beautiful weather made for barbecuing but if you’re a sun worshipper in search of your next Vitamin D hit, we suggest you pack your bags and head East. What you’ll find upon arriving in the East is an amalgamation of lively cities, sleepy seaside towns, ancient archaeological sites and natural beauty spots. For Turkey it seems, has something to suit all tastes. Flights from Manchester and the North Midlands are frequent to the city of Antalya, Turkey’s main airport. If you’re willing to sacrifice sleep with unsociable flight times, booking through a price comparison site for a good deal is recommended. It’s only a four hour journey through the skies until the comforting wall of heat hits you as you deplane. Instantly melting all stress, the

“cherished wall of heat ” cherished wall of heat signals a time to ditch reality (along with the many layers of clothing you’ve been hiding under all winter). Located between Europe and the Middle East and surrounded by the warm shores of the Mediterranean, temperatures in Turkey can reach up to 30°C in the summer months of July and August-hardly something to complain about. Of course cloudy days are sure to be had on occasion and those pesky mosquitoes like to ride the zephyr over the mountains at night to feed. So don’t forget the bug spray to accompany your sun lotion. The two main cities of Ankara and Antalya are fast developing thanks to the support provided by Turkey’s flourishing tourism industry, with Antalya attracting 35% of Turkey’s total holidaymakers. Russian and

German tourists tend to dominate the resort and contrary to popular belief the Turks are most welcoming to British tourists. Apparently it is our accent and sarcastic, witty sense of humour that charms them. Although the exchange of 100 camels for a young British girl seems to be somewhat of an urban myth, as always it is recommended that young females especially

“finest selection of seafood” keep their wits about them. Antalya is rather contemporary, being home to Turkey’s largest shopping malls and the country’s finest selection of seafood restaurants. In contrast it also optimises traditional Turkish culture. The famous waters of Konyaalti beach surround Antalya and in it’s streets rest historic market places selling handmade rugs, woodwork and jewellery. If the adrenaline of water sports is how you get your fix, the city has three huge water parks renowned for satisfying the adrenaline junkie within; Troy Aqua Park, Dedeman Hotel Aqua Park and Aqua Land at Konyaalti’s beach. Antalya is a hot spot for scuba diving with over 25 dive sites home to the hidden treasures of over 125 shipwrecks, canyons and caves. The warm coast of the Medi-

terranean protects a secret aquarium of loggerhead turtles, groupers, yellow mouth barracuda, stingrays, eels, calamari, octopi and the occasional dolphin. Locals suggest diving in September-October after the first autumn rains and when the marine world is at its most active. Alas most of these beautiful creatures will end up on someone’s plate.

“beautiful creatures” Antalya is all well and good if you’re in search of an active beach holiday, mixed with the banter of bartering in the local bazaars, but if your soul is pining for secluded spots on the beach and the calming sounds of warm seas lapping hot sands then head southwest from Antalya to the small seaside town of Kemer. A 45 minute coach trip from Antalya and you’ll be in this purposefully built tourist trap. Kemer is well known for its lack of character. It is a somewhat dishearteningly dull landscape with no definitive landmarks. Originally a marooned islet only accessible by boat, the island saw extensive flooding in the 1960s thus enforcing drastic damage control and confirming the need for a working infrastructure. Subsequently a stone wall was built to protect the town, giving it not only its name but inspiring further construction that ensued.

17

WANDERLUST|ANTALYA However don’t despair just yet for Kemer possesses a natural beauty. The town is snuggled at the foot of a steep mountain range and surrounded by pine forest valleys. The soils are home to 9,000 species of flower, 3,000 of which are native. Aroma aside, another attraction to Kemer is its scenic and very flashy harbour and

Turkey’s Motocross Championships. The ancient town of Olympos is just a short trip away and home to Turkey’s coastal national park, the ideal setting for trekking, mountain biking and kayaking. The Lycian Way is a scenic footpath running along the coast from the picturesque town of Fethiye all the way to Antalya and was recently listed one of the world’s ‘Top Ten Walks’ by

In the evenings the bays are lined with fish restaurants and quiet bars serving cocktails and Egyptian Shisha pipes. Prices are reasonable outside the confines of all inclusive resorts.

the Sunday Times. Accommodation in Kemer is standard, like most European resorts the star rating system can’t always be trusted. Most of the town’s resorts are all inclusive, some resembling small villages complete with gyms, shops and salons (quite handy if you consider that amenities aren’t so ‘local’ in Kemer).

Beautiful M

arinas

Kemer’s town centre is a bright white strip of expensive designers and some not so expensive fakes. Shopkeepers are quick to spot the overly polite English in search of a bargain. Like many European cultures, locals take an afternoon siesta outside of their shop front. Kemer feels eerily deserted around this time, thus if you can’t beat them, join them. If you do wish to get out and about there are various attractions within close reach; The Tekirdag Museum of Archaeology, the ruins of Phaselis Roman port, Hadrianus Monumental Gate and its three arches, Aspendos ancient amphitheatre, the Mythological Fires of Chimaera and the talented craftsmen of Yoruk Park. ‘Old Antalya’ is a Roman town full of charm and luxury accommodation preserved by the modern city. Annual events in the area include art exhibitions, festivals, boat races, World Rally Championship and 18

WANDERLUST | ANTALYA

Kemer is ideal for those wanting to relax and perfect for those seeking a flawless tan whilst basking in peace amongst the leathery locals. It is a sleepy town and those looking for an atmospheric nightlife would be disappointed upon arriving at Kemer. Those who appreciate unspoilt flora, beaches on which to crisp and fresh food in quiet locales will cherish their time within this surprisingly hospitable culture.

THE SEVEN beauty OF

SINS

DEADLY

Forget lust, greed, anger, sloth, pride, gluttony and envy – beauty faux pas have us sinning all the way to the make up counter. Don’t let these misdemeanours get a hold of you; our Seven Deadly Sins of Beauty will have you running for the cleansing wipes. Pick up your fallen halo, dust it off and become a Beauty Angel – or face the results of your unscrupulous deeds in the mirror…

~

1. Forgetting To Cleanse Foundation – the face’s number one friend… and foe. The rule is a simple one – remove your make up every night! Clogged up pores and spot breakouts are never attractive – give your skin some time to breathe. We know (and ignore) the importance of removing make up every single night – so is an extra five minutes in bed really worth it?

2. Neglecting the Moisturiser If you left a juicy pear out in the sun for long enough it would shrivel up into a wrinkled brown mess – don’t let this happen to your skin. The daily punishments of wind, sun, exfoliation, harsh products, swimming and pollution all sap out the pureness of your soft skin; replenishing with moisture is a must.

3. Frazzling Hair

The battle with frizz is a daily one – in desperation we all turn to the devil’s straighteners/ blowdryer/ curling tongs at some point. But heat is not hair’s best ally – imagine the heat with which you punish your hair touching your skin – ouch. Always, ALWAYS use a heat defence spray, refrain from using heat tools every single day, use a rich conditioner and once a week boost your locks with nourishment via a healing hair mask.

4. Toasting Skin The perfect golden tan – the epitome of many beauty desires. But as we strive to beat the lack of real sun in the British skies, we turn to the pinnacle of all things evil in the beauty world. The sun bed. We try to ignore the fact that those harmful UV rays can do us irreversible harm, but overuse of the beds results in premature aging, dry skin, eye damage and - the big one - skin cancer. Stick to the fake stuff.

5. Dehydration H2O – not solely for quenching a dry mouth. Experts reckon we should drink 2.5 litres of water every day, which helps to produce, clear, nourished skin and shiny hair, aiding concentration and increasing energy levels. A hydrated face is a glowing face, and all that water helps to flush out the toxins from a boozy night before.

6. Too Many Takeaways We all know the drill; five fruit and veg a day keep the doctor away. But from a beauty perspective all those vitamins and minerals help to create a fabulous face. What goes in will eventually show on the outside, so a diet of greasy fast food will unfortunately result in a greasy complexion. Balance the good and the evil – lots of fruit and veg, fibre, carbohydrates and a limited amount of sugar and fatty

7. Dirty Stopouts A night on the tiles is all well and good until the time comes to drag yourself out of bed for work in morning. Cue unkempt, flat hair, panda eyes, a blotchy complexion, deathly pale face and a hungover stomach. Not the best way to start an early morning meeting. The cure to this problem? Easy – try to go to bed by 11pm, at least five days a week, and wake up an angelic beauty. 22

The Avenue www.attheavenue.com

Owned and managed by Jeanette with 11 years of beauty experience and

“Hollywood glow” qualified in Dermaclear Diamond Dermabrasion, along with beauty therapist Erica, The Avenue’s warm and welcoming, independent beauty department has a whole host of treatments up its sleeves. Nail extensions, with a focus on the nailfriendly Bio Sculpt in colours and French, manicures, pedicures, massage, permanent and semi-permanent false eyelashes (Hollywood and Marvel which last up to three months), spray tans with a choice of darkness, browshaping and tinting, all kinds of waxing, with Hollywood and Brazilian a speciality, male waxing – no corner is left unpampered. On the hunt for that Hollywood glow, perfect skin is a good place to start. The Avenue offers the in-demand Diamond Facial Dermabrasion by Dermaclear; a medically approved treatment for ageing, thickened or dry skin, active acne and skin discolouration, stretch marks, scar tissue, open pores and blackheads and fine lines, rejuvenating skin to produce cleaner, smoother and softer skin. My life as a beauty reviewer is tough one – I was to be treated to this skin-perfecting treatment. The full treatment takes one hour, beginning with a full facial for total relaxation. Using luxury brand La Biosthetique Dermosthetique Visage products, the Cell Active Anti-Age Program facial at The Avenue is a complete indulgence. First my skin was cleansed to remove make up, dirt and any impurities, before toner was applied to further cleanse and shrink the pores. Next, the moisturiser, so calming as the silky product was smoothed in to my skin, massaging those cares away. Exfoliation was next, to dig out any deep-set grime

and cleanse blocked pores whilst removing blackheads, before a face mask was applied allowing me to lie back and relax as my face was purified!

Call 0114 275 9066 to book an appointment; late night appointments are available on Thursdays and Fridays and student discounts are on offer.

The microdermabrasion itself takes 20 minutes. A fine diamond head is massaged over the skin, vacuuming and removing the top layers of the epidermis and dead skin cells. The vacuum action helps to stimulate quicker cell renewal, encouraging collagen and elastin production, improving blood flow for a firming and lifting effect, even from the very first treatment. Don’t let the term ‘microdermabrasion’ scare you – the process is much more relaxing than it first sounds! It doesn’t hurt at all; all I could feel was some suction and a bit of an exfoliating sensation. After the treatment my skin was slightly red but felt refreshed, vibrant and silky soft, with even skin tone and plumped skin. I was advised not to wear makeup for 12 hours after the treatment – hence why I opted for a late night appointment! – and not to go out in the sun, protecting the skin with sun block. Forget airbrushing – after a spot of microdermabrasion my face was glowing and rejuvenated; for superstar results this is definitely a treatment I’d recommend.

Confectionaries glinting with golden Lindt bunnies, Easter looming and the remnants of the Chinese New Year celebrations all point that dangling carrot in the direction of Bugs and Thumper. However, our furry rabbit friends are not only the perfect companions for cuddles, but accompanied with a Tunisian twist they make for a tantalizing treat for the taste buds. Channel your inner Glenn Close and rustle up this rabbit recipe with a North African kick.

To Cook: Prepared in 15 minutes, cooked in 30. Serves 4. Preheat the oven to 180°C

Lay the rabbit out flat and generously season with salt and freshly ground pepper. In a bowl, mix together the couscous, raisins, flaked almonds, ground cinnamon, garlic, lemon zest, cumin and prunes. Place the couscous mixture on the centre of the rabbit and wrap around the remaining rabbit. Smear Harissa paste over the rolled up rabbit, tie with string and place in a roasting tray. Roast the rabbit for 30 minutes until cooked through. As the rabbit roasts, mix together the soured cream, parsley and lemon juice. Serve the rabbit hot from the oven, accompanied by the soured cream mixture.

CUISINE|REVIEW Moo LaLa www.moo-lala.co.uk

Behold a most contemporary British menu with a generous helping of Sheffield at Moo LaLa, West One’s newest eatery. Moo LaLa’s ethos is straightforward; fresh, simple dishes with a healthy portion of locally sourced produce. The décor is modern and the grass green splashes to the walls have only connotations of a fresh, clean, country feel.

“Forever converted” Photographs of Sheffield’s surrounding peaks and greenery adorn the walls with the chic lighting and stainless steel pass adding elegance. The quirky name was born from the restaurants desire to bring country produce (Moo) fresh to the plates of our fair city (LaLa). In doing so, the restaurant not only produces delectable dishes but also supports the local economy. The restaurant’s fruit and vegetables are all sourced from Castle Market and all things dough are supplied by the Bakewell Pudding Company and go into such dishes as garlicky green beans, chunky coleslaw and the asparagus, goats cheese and spring onion tartlet. The menu also boasts rump, rib eye and fillet steaks accompanied by hand cut fat chips and roasted cherry vine tomatoes, with a choice of Moo LaLa sticky glaze,

roduce

Fresh P

peppercorn, mushroom or red wine sauce. The ‘Moo’ on your plate is of course, sourced locally from Jonny Walker Farm in Birley Carr, Daisy Hill Farm, Brochall Farm at Langsett and Cross Farm in Lower Bradfield. The fillet steak at MooLaLa is genuine divine bovine and you’d be lucky to find better in the city for its price tag of £18.95. You can wash your steak down with a selection from the uber tempting wine menu –notably the MonteVerde, Cabernet Sauvignon (especially if you’re having the steak) or with local brews such as Sheffield Pride or Pale Rider. If you still have room for desert, Moo LaLa allows you to indulge on a ‘Yorkshire cheeseboard’ or locally made ‘Our Cow Molly’ dairy ice cream amongst other sweet treats and a selection of after dinner coffees.

Head chef Garry Dodds who formulated the menu and aided the restaurant in obtaining quality produce from local farms and small operations gives classic British dishes a high end twist in this contemporary restaurant, where all dishes are cooked to order. To find a restaurant in Sheffield with such a welcoming atmosphere and quality food is quite the task. Moo LaLa is certainly once tasted, forever converted.

Converts only to the Cosmopolitan need to step over the threshold of Soyo. Over a century old this converted place of worship now attracts only those who bow down to the magical powers of martini. Fountains replaced by fishbowls, pulpits of cocktail bar stools, Soyo allures only the most glamorous of Sheffield’s sinners. “Brimming with beautiful people” Themed nightly Soyo attracts believers of R’n’B, House, Funk, Old School and New Jack Swing to the floor. The holy day of Sunday is dedicated to the spiritual spinning of the vinyl as resident DJ Jimmy May plays a mix tape of tunes late into the night. Monday nights are filled with those plucking the guitar strings from obscurity, as Soyo hosts live music from the city’s best up and coming musical talents. Thursdays are for those who like their £1.50 tipples accompanied by a slice of cheese, as it’s chart night. Friday evenings at Soyo are for everyone who wants to let their hair down after a tough week at the office, R’n’B, House and Disco play long into the night. Such a chic bar needs an equally chic accompanying cocktail list. Mojitos, Cosmos, Margharitas, Woo Woos and many more

adorn the menu. Cocktail ‘hour’ is nightly between 8pm-10pm with cocktails ridiculously underpriced at £2. Pitchers for £5 and for those more civilized, bottles of house wine are also only £5 at this time. Spacious, stylish and brimming with beautiful people, Soyo really is the epicentre of Sheffield’s most chic nightlife scene. Amen.

TRESSES|REVIEW BASELINE HAIR 26-28 Commonside, Walkley, S10 1GB

Forever on the look out for a fresh new salon, on discovering the newly opened Baseline Salon in Walkley, it wasn’t long before I popped in to see what they’re all about. Having only opened in February, Baseline is salon owner Nerris Griffiths’ latest venture. After dabbling between hairdressing, childcare and the running of a city centre bar, Nerris has come back home to hair styling. She insists that Baseline is for everyone; all ages, backgrounds and ethnic origins, from children to students to the more mature client; Baseline welcomes them all.

“over 23 years of knowledge” Certainly experienced enough to tackle any bouffant conundrum, Nerris has over 23 years of knowledge under her belt, with a certificate in Education from Hallam University, a childcare award and, drawing on her experience as a lecturer and assessor at Castle College, strives to incorporate teaching into the salon. I settled into my seat as Nerris took a look at my hair. The punishments of straightening, blow drying, backcombing and hairspraying all take their toll, and my strands were looking just a bit sorry for themselves. In the never-ending battle to volumise my limp locks, my hair loses moisture, and colouring saps out the protein, leaving it brittle and prone to breakage. of volume, I simply like big hair, so Nerris On top of this my colour was starting applied some Wella Enrich Bouncy Foam to look a tad dull, so Nerris suggested then blow dried using a round brush, adding a few highlights to my parting, concentrating on the roots and brushlightening up my tresses. KSPACE

CHECK IN|REVIEW

KSpace Luxury Serviced Apartment Hotels Sheffield is home to some of Yorkshire’s most upscale city centre hotels. Relaxing within aesthetical splendor and comfort is of course a treat, but if you’re spending more than a few days away from your own bed it’s nice to take that rest in a space that doesn’t confine you to only your room or the bar. What you’ll gain by booking into the KSpace Luxury Serviced Apartment hotels is the freedom to lounge and entertain at your leisure. KSpace are sleek and spacious, serviced city centre pads offering a contemporary, refreshing alternative to a hotel. Sheffield’s K Space apartments are predominately

“freedom to lounge” housed within the Devonshire Quarter at leading locations West One and the prestigious Sinclair building. The most recent edition of KSpace apartments- and in this case Town Houses- can be found in the leafy location close to the Botanical Gardens at Sharrow Point. KSpace also resides in Leeds where luxury apartments can be found by the waterfront at Waterloo Court in the city’s Brewery Wharf district. What KSpace provides is the feeling of being more the resident than the guest of whichever city you choose to slumber in. However, this doesn’t mean you won’t receive service akin to that you would find in a high-end hotel. Weekly maid services providing fresh linen and towels, flat screen digital televisions and high-speed Wi-Fi, separate kitchen, dining and living areas are standard features at all the Sheffield locations.

“entertain at your leisure” The newest edition to the Sheffield KSpace is a truly exclusive, contemporary development. Dramatic staircases, floor to ceiling windows, balconies and roof terraces make this abode one of Sheffield’s most urbane locations. Sharrow Point offers a walkable commute to the City Centre whilst being submerged in the leafier end of town. Close to the boutiques and eateries of Ecclesall Road, the Sharrow Point apartments are perfect for those seeking a relaxing weekend of sauntering between cafes and bars. Summer months at these apartments can be spent in Sharrow Point’s secure communal garden or at the nearby Botanical Gardens. Points to note are that most apartments can only be booked for a minimum of two nights and cancellation must be made fourteen days prior to planned check-in, to avoid fees. Although children are welcome and catered for, the pooch and the pussy must alas stay at home. So if you’re planning a gathering of friends for a weekend in the city, remember to check-in to the KSpace serviced

LEGAL|SOCIAL ADULTERY

IS IT REALLY WORTH REPLYING?

It could spell an end to your family’s future...

ARE SOCIAL NETWORKING WEBSITES TO BLAME FOR A RISE IN ADULTERY? In my job as a divorce lawyer I have noticed the rise of a strange new phenomenon over the last couple of years. Many clients who come to me for advice now cite social networking websites as being a contributory factor in the breakdown of their relationship.

“ uninhibited surfing sessions “ The recent surge in popularity of social networking websites like Facebook, Myspace and Second Life have brought with them the possibility to make new friends with common interests, as well as to reconnect with lost friends from school or your more recent past. But do social networking sites also encourage flirtatious behaviour, and are they really to blame for a rise in adultery? As anyone who has joined Facebook will know, that first couple of weeks often becomes a race to add as many ‘friends’ as possible. It is also all too easy, and often irresistibly tempting to look up old boyfriends or maybe just that guy from college you had a crush on, but never did anything about at the time. Of course, it is human nature to wonder what happened to people you were close to in the past. Of course, social networking sites don’t make anyone cheat on their partner. They do make it easy to get in contact with people, and therefore provide the opportunity to cheat to someone who is that way inclined. They also provide a much greater chance of getting caught, as they

People who are shy in person can often act much more confidently in a virtual situation, leading them to be more flirtatious and socially assertive than they otherwise would. As a divorce lawyer I have seen a huge increase in recent years in people producing print outs of emails, instant messages and text messages to back up claims of their partner’s infidelity.

So how many exes does your current partner have on their list of Facebook friends? And for that matter how many do you have on yours? It is worth bearing in mind next time you receive a friend request and you are faced with the option to ‘Confirm or Ignore?’ Is it someone you would be

She only found out that her husband wanted a divorce when friends started phoning her to console her on being dumped. Apparently her husband had posted on his profile, ‘Neil Brady has ended his marriage to Emma Brady’. To make matters worse, someone had added the comment that her husband was ‘better off out of it’. Ouch.

MOMENTUM|REVIEW Hyundai ix20 1.4 CRDi www.hyundai-car.co.uk

THE LIBYAN CRISIS has pushed up the cost of a gallon of petrol in the UK to £6 for the first time. The AA has warned that with unleaded now costing an average of 132.12p per litre and diesel increasing to 137.92p, thousands of drivers could be forced to leave the car at home.

“ Intelligent Stop & Go technology” However, Hyundai is doing its bit to help ease the cost of everyday motoring by producing the thrifty new ix20. The latest model to join the South Korean company’s ‘i-range’ line-up of vehicles has the style of a supermini, the space of Doctor Who’s TARDIS and the economy of a city car. Every manual model features Intelligent Stop & Go technology, low rolling-resistance Continental tyres and an Alternator Management System (AMS), giving it the lowest emissions and fuel consumption in the class.

“It is roomy, tremendously economical, and it has a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating”

Made at Hyundai’s newest European plant in Nošovice, Czech Republic, the ix20 is essentially a compact MPV (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) with a healthy dose of fashion

exceptionally efficient engines which power the ix20: a 1.4-litre with 90PS in both petrol and diesel, and a125PS petrol mated to an automatic transmission. Hyundai expects its new ‘U2’ common-rail diesel engine to be the most popular choice among British buyers looking for exceptional economy. The U2 engines

and functionality. It is not, in my opinion, good-looking but it does have a chic sporty profile, which sets it apart from the boxy ‘minivan’ image typically associated with other MPVs. Inside, the ix20 is firmly screwed together and matches the spirited design of the exterior. The well-appointed cabin features a height adjustable driver’s seat, air conditioning, six airbags, active head restraints, radio/ CD audio system with six speakers, plus CD, MP3 and USB-/AUX-/iPOD-input capabilities. More importantly, the car provides excellent legroom and headroom in the front and rear. It is also very easy to achieve a comfortable driving position. And once on the move, the ix20 delivers an alert and supple ride, even over the most pothole ravaged roads. That is no surprise though because the car is the first in Hyundai’s history to be extensively tested on the worst of British roads. But back to the fundamental running costs of the car; Hyundai has developed three

use high-pressure common rail injection, electronically-controlled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) and a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) to ensure they meet Euro V emissions regulations. What’s more, fitted with Integrated Stop-Start technology and a six-speed manual gearbox, the 1.4 CRDi Style version of the ix20, on test here, records CO2 emissions of just 114g/ km and returns an average fuel economy of 65.7mpg. These class-leading figures will bring reduced motoring costs through lower road fund licence costs as well as saving pounds at the pumps.

In fact the ix20 is so fuel efficient it can actually better or match the figures for rivals’ city cars.

Ok, by their very nature, MPVs, large or small, are never exhilarating to drive, and the ix20 is no exception. But the car is impressive in so many other respects. It is roomy, tremendously economical, it has a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, it has 20,000-mile service intervals and comes with Hyundai’s five-year unlimited-mileage warranty, plus five years of roadside as-
