Welcome lifestyle magazine

March is here, and with it comes hopeful thoughts of spring (if the temperature would be so kind as to raise slightly above freezing), fresh ideas and perhaps a well-deserved spring clean. And, of course, the latest edition of Chic Lifestyle Magazine.

24 DIRECTOR

Our injection of celebs this month comes from an interview with BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing pro, Denise van Outen, having recently appeared in Sheffield on the Strictly arena tour, plus songbird sensation Rae Morris, on the cusp of her musical tour. Our Cuisine pages are fully loaded with sweet and savoury treats this month – can our chocolatey column from Ecclesall Road’s treat emporium, Cocoa, tempt you? Or perhaps our review of the Fahrenheit restaurant nestled within the luxurious Gentings Casino will be enough to get your stomach rumbling. Our Beauty team have made it their mission to sample and report back on all the hottest salons and treatments in the city (it’s a tough job, but someone’s got to do it), and this month we’ve returned pampered and plushed up from a massage at L’Beautique, and glossy and glamorous from new hair salon, Volt. Our Fashion vixen has put together a collection of her favourite wax jackets for the guys and fresh florals for the girls – there’s no excuse not to be looking fabulous this month after taking a peek at our pages. On top of all that we’ve laden this issue with all the regular suspects, from Film and Music Reviews through to Living. Finally, I’d like to take this chance to introduce myself as your new Editor and to welcome you into this month’s luxuriant Chic Lifestyle Magazine. Don’t forget to flip over for Chic Asian Lifestyle, feast your eyes on the mag’s new style and brace yourself for more interesting changes to come! what’s on The Elevation of Landscape: Art in Late 1800’s Britain Millennium Gallery

Babylab: Can Babies Think? Weston Park

Thursday 21st March, Free Entry

Friday 15th March, Free Entry

At the moment The Millennium Gallery is a haven of 19th Century masterpieces, as exhibitions such as ‘Turner and the Monro Masters’ and ‘Force of Nature’ are delighting and entrancing the public of the Steel City in equal measure. However, we need to ask ourselves the question; what does it all mean?

Although there have been numerous studies conducted into how a baby learns to speak, there are very few that seem to have asked the question; do babies think? If you feel like getting intellectual then this session presented by The University of Sheffield will be just up your street.

Luckily, Mark Evans, Senior Curator at the V&A, joins Museums Sheffield Curator, Louise Pullen, to philosophise on the late Victorian need to elevate the status of natural landscape to that of true art, and how it shaped the art world of one of society’s most conservative eras of history. The lecture looks to debunk the myths around such famous figures in the movement as Constable, Turner and Ruskin amongst others; in the process exploring how new techniques came to craft a whole movement in art history. To find out more information visit www.museums-sheffield.org.uk

Running from 10am to 2pm, The University of Sheffield, in partnership with Weston Park, present their research into the topic of baby thoughts. As part of National Science and Engineering Week, the University will be using their extensive research to debate such topics as, ‘Can Babies Think? How Does Language Develop? Can Toddlers Reason?’. It’s basically a psychological study into the development of the mind and how we become what we are. This should prove fascinating. To find out more information visit www.museums-sheffield.org.uk

Soul Sister The Lyceum Theatre

Monday 25th February – Saturday 2nd March, “You’re simply the best, better than all the rest, better than anyone, anyone I ever met!” Yes, you certainly are Tina. Tina Turner is a true cultural icon whose rich, deep voice has delighted and entranced audiences around the world for decades and now the story of the life of times of Tina and ex-husband (and former colleague), Ike Turner comes to Sheffield!

Designed to Shine: 100 Years of Stainless Steel Millennium Gallery Saturday 16th February – Sunday 13th October, Free Entry

2013 is a pretty special year for the Steel City. 100 years ago, Harry Brearley discovered stainless steel, resulting in Sheffield achieving recognition on a global scale for their quality steel and revolutionising the modern world in the century that followed. This legacy is still very much alive and the city continues to innovate, design and manufacture ‘rustless’ steel. To celebrate this historic landmark, as part of the 100 Years of Stainless Steel, the Millennium Gallery is taking part in a year-long programme of events by housing the Designed to Shine exhibition. The exhibition will compile of city-wide arts and heritage partnership from across the city. To demonstrate the sheer diversity of stainless steel objects, dating from the late 1800s through to present day, pieces will be on display including works of David Mellor and Robert Welch. This is a real opportunity to appreciate a legacy, which here in Sheffield we are immensely proud of and will continue to be so throughout the 21st century and beyond.

In a new musical that premiered to rave reviews at the West End’s Savoy Theatre, Soul Sister is a musical that sets the couple’s dramatic life to the best Tina Turner tunes, and has received rave reviews. Coming to The Lyceum for a week as February ends, Soul Sister promises glitz, glam and the best tunes of the Turner back catalogue. Lead actress Emi Wokoma has been described by The Times as “sensational”, and as having “taken London by storm” by the Daily Mail. Chris Tummings has equally been praised as shady co-lead Ike as “triumphant” as the “hissably cocksure and sleazy Ike” by The Independent. This production, featuring classics such as ‘What’s Love Got to Do with It’, River Deep, Mountain High’ and of course ‘Simply the Best’, promises to be a stand out. The Darkness Sheffield City Hall

The Thing about Psychopaths Presented at the Studio

Friday 1st March – Tickets £25

Monday 11th March – Tuesday 12th March, Tickets £12

Don’t we miss classic eye catching, show stopping and make up smeared rock and roll? We’re thinking people like David Bowie here; people who aren’t afraid to go out on a limb, do something a bit wacky and out there, and in the process create something that is pure genius! One band that has carried the flame of flamboyant rock and roll over the past decade is The Darkness. Get excited if this is your thing, because The Darkness is coming to Sheffield this March!

Olly Murs Motorpoint Arena

1st and 2nd March, Tickets £32.50 Having risen to fame as runner up of X Factor in 2009, Olly Murs has not only smashed the charts but also become a TV regular as presenter on ITV2’s, The Xtra Factor. Due to phenomenal demand, his one night in Sheffield has become two, appearing on the 1st and 2nd of March, proving his heartthrob status within the female population!

This is a new play from acclaimed playwright Ben Tagoe (Cold Turkey at Nana’s and Bittersweet Sunshine) that plays for a one night engagement at The Studio in March. It explores every level of British society, from the dank cells of Her Majesty’s prisons to the gleaming boardrooms of Canary Wharf, and exposes our culture of cold social advancement through any means possible. A thrilling ride that acts to make you question the world we live in, it promises to leave food for thought. Corbeau tearing up the back room - Images by Lanty Zhang Studio

With doors opening at 7pm and the band gracing the stage an hour later, The Darkness hit the Sheffield City Hall on Friday 1st March for their Sheffield date of their ‘Let Them Eat Cakes’ World Tour. What promises to be an amazing spectacle, filled to the brim with their classic showmanship, they’ll be featuring all their old hits with a few new ones thrown in. It promises to be a smash!

How opportunistic are we in modern Britain? Most of us would say we left rabid opportunism well and truly behind when we deserted Victorian values and began embracing such concepts as social responsibility. However, the cold hard truth is that we aren’t as altruistic as we’d like to think, and it is this modern opportunism that is explored in ‘The Thing about Psychopaths’.

His latest album, ‘In Case You Didn’t Know’, has been certified platinum, and fans should prepare for hits like ‘Troublemaker’, ‘Heart Skips A Beat’ and ‘Dance With Me Tonight’. After his sold out 2012 tour, this one promises to be even bigger and better. Support comes from Britain’s Got Talent’s Loveable Rogues, who shot to fame after coming fourth on the show with their ‘original, fun and organic’ music, having now signed to Simon Cowell’s label, Syco Music.

Interview | Denise Van Outen

Strictly Come Dancing Tour 2013

D E N I S E VA N O U T E N A staple of Saturday night for many was BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing – screen-filling spectacles of sequinned gowns, more tuxes than you can shake a stick at and, of course, a dazzling array of celebrities going from awkward dancing ducklings to glamorous sashaying swans before our very eyes. But if the small screen just wasn’t enough to satisfy your insatiable need for cha-cha-cha, then the Strictly Come Dancing Tour waltzed around the arenas of the UK at the beginning of the year. The show was a raving success, but before the event we grabbed a couple of minutes with joint runner up of the TV version, Denise van Outen, before she hit the stage. Why did you decide to go on the tour? I know a few people who’ve done it before, like Chris Parker and Julian Clary, who told me it’s absolutely brilliant fun. Robbie Savage said it feels like the prize that you get after weeks of working hard on the show. You get to do it all again, without the competitive element. If you don’t get the glitterball, you get to do this instead. And also, the show is so high-pressured in front of the TV cameras, that it will be nice to just go out and dance and feel a bit more relaxed. The hardest part of the show for me has been learning the dances so without that element, it will just be about dancing and enjoying myself. And when am I going to get the chance to perform in front of that many people again? I’m not in a pop group! I’m used to much smaller theatres. I got such a buzz being at Wembley, so hopefully that’s what this will be like. Are you looking forward to spending time with the other celebrities on tour? Well I’m going to bring my daughter [Betsy] to some of the dates. Michael Vaughan has a daughter the same age - two and a half - so we’ve said we’ll make sure we bring them on the same dates and we can all hang out. But on the other days then I might let my hair down a bit, definitely.

Is Betsy very proud of you? Yes, well she’s a bit too young to really understand it but she loves the sequins and the glitter and the dresses, definitely. We had a kids’ day when we were allowed to bring our children to come and watch us - they’re not normally allowed in the studio - and when I came on she said, really loudly, “That’s my mummy!”. Are there any dates you’re particularly looking forward to on tour? Well being from Essex, the London dates are quite exciting for me. I’ve already done Wembley with the show, and now we get to do the O2 on the other side of London, which will be great! I’ve been to so many concerts there and I’ll never get another chance to perform in front of that many people, so I can’t wait. What impact has the dancing had on your body? I popped my rib out just before the final so I had to have that popped back in, that was quite painful. I got ‘jive whiplash’, and my knees are always cut and bloody. And just general aches and pains every week, towards the weekend. I have toned up a lot, I think I’ve lost weight but I don’t know how much. I always lose weight when I’m working, though. We eat a lot but you’re just burning up so much energy that it falls off. Which celebrity would you like to see doing Strictly next year? I know who I’d love, and I asked him if he’d be up for it. I think David Walliams would be amazing, and he’d look brilliant in the ballroom tails because he’s tall and slim. But I’ve already asked him and he said he’s too lazy! Have you been surprised to learn about any celebrity fans? Yes, Kylie Minogue tweeted that she was voting for me and James [Jordan], which was amazing! I was very excited when I saw that. Will you stay in touch with James? Yes, definitely. I’ve become really good friends with him and his wife, Ola. I haven’t had the chance for us all to go out for dinner with [husband] Lee yet, but I’m sure we will do in the New Year. What plans do you have after the tour? I’d quite like to have a rest, to be honest! I want to have some family time and just be a mummy. I’m doing a one-woman show with a limited London run which will be fun. I’ve been offered three shows which all involve dancing, which I’d never have got before doing Strictly, because I never used to get the dancing parts. There’s one that I definitely can’t do because it’s while the tour’s on, but I’m having a look at the other two, so we’ll see. With thanks to Neil Reading PR Ltd www.strictlycomedancinglive.com

Whirlowbrook Hall | News

Whirlowbrook hall

Whirlowbrook Hall www.whirlowbrook.co.uk 01143 210209 Saxon Hotels Ltd is to re-open Whirlowbrook Hall after signing a 25 year lease with Sheffield City Council. Whirlowbrook Hall, a wedding and events venue that is located in Sheffield’s S11, closed in October 2012. Saxon Hotels Ltd, owners of the Best Western Plus Mosborough Hall Hotel in Sheffield’s S20, plan to open Whirlowbrook Hall in May 2013. Saxon Hotels Ltd have owned Best Western Plus Mosborough Hall Hotel since 2004, during which time they have established the property as one of Sheffield’s leading hotels and a very popular wedding venue. The opportunity to lease Whirlowbrook Hall fits perfectly with the company’s expansion plans. Greg Dyke, owner of Saxon Hotels Ltd, said, “I am very excited to be involved with the re-opening of Whirlowbrook Hall; it is a stunning venue. We have built a very successful wedding and events led business at Best Western Plus Mosborough Hall Hotel and we are keen to do the same at Whirlowbrook Hall”. Whirlowbrook Hall is a stone built, former country house, located within the council owned Whirlowbrook Park. Saxon Hotels Ltd plan to operate the venue as a wedding and events business from May 2013. The Hall is also planned to be open to the public for a number of events throughout the year. Paul Brown, director of Saxon Hotels Ltd, said, “The team and I are very excited about re-establishing Whirlowbrook Hall as one of Sheffield’s leading venues. We are also looking forward to providing the community with a more accessible venue, with many opportunities to use the Hall throughout the year”. Whirlowbrook Hall is to re-open on the 4th May with a garden party. The café within Whirlowbrook Park was closed in October 2012, and Saxon Hotels Ltd have agreed with Sheffield City Council to work together to provide a new café located within the park. It is hoped that the new café will be open to the public by summer 2014. Garin Davies, Director of Longrose Buccleuch, said, “Having been a customer of Whirlowbrook Park café, since my grandparents took me when I was just 6 years old, I am delighted that we have agreed a solution for the café. We shall endeavour to ensure this provides a good facility for users of the park”. Whilst working on the café, Saxon Hotels Ltd plan to open the hall on a number of weekends this summer for afternoon tea. Cllr Isobel Bowler said, “It’s great news for the people of Sheffield that this unique facility will re-open for events and once again play its part in this wonderful public park. The proposed community events will also bring a new dimension to the hall and attract even more people to enjoy the park. I’m also really pleased that for the first time, the operator is offering a dedicated café operation which won’t have to compete with events and that whilst this is being developed, Saxon Hotels will offer a summer refreshments service starting this year”. music Heaven’s Basement Filthy Empire With all the dance sodden chart tunes filtering through the radio at the moment, we’re really missing good old rock music. If you agree, then Heaven’s Basement’s debut album, Filthy Empire, released 4th February, is definitely for you. Think Bon Jovi meets the Sex Pistols meets Muse meets Placebo! A lot to take in, the album is stadium rock with emotion thrown in. In the process, the band has created an album that evokes the spirit of rock at its finest. Earlier songs on the album deal with anarchy and revolution. A particular highlight is ‘Fire, Fire’, which is your classic anarchy anthem. It’s loud, it’s anthemic and it speaks to the social revolutionist within us all! Later tracks are more personal, dealing with the rocky road of personal discovery. ‘I am Electric’ and ‘Heartbreaking Son of a B*tch’ are particularly self-reflective, using clever lyrics coupled with heavy guitars and strong hooks, to define personal identity within the framework of the band’s signature sound. Ultimately this album is one that explores the chaos of identity. It uses fast, pounding lines along with insightful lyrics, bringing out the anarchic chaos that lies in all of our souls.

Emili Sande Our Version of Events There’s a reason why Emeli Sande’s debut set, Our Version of Events, originally released 13th February 2012, has become such a runaway success. It’s absolutely fantastic. A collection of classic R&B inspired love songs with minimal electronic augmentation; it’s an eloquent ode to the strength of love. Tracks such as ‘My Kind of Love’ and ‘Next to Me’ explore love against the odds, using negative metaphors and situations as a contrast to the pure strength of her love. There’s a natural progression with tracks such as ‘Where I Sleep’ and ‘Mountains’, which move on from the strength of budding love to emphasise how love survives the bitter winds of life, as they buffet the metaphorical cliff.

In stark contrast, Sande uses elements of the ridiculous (‘Clown’) and realism (‘Maybe’, ‘Suitcase’), to pose questions about how and why love falls apart. Sande’s plain talking lyrics set off with her heart breaking vocal belts tug on the heart strings; we laugh, get angry and question right alongside her. Our Version of Events is an album that explores the strength of love, no matter the situation. That’s why it’s such a success; it taps into common themes to provide simple insights. We can all relate to feeling a love so strong; it could survive anything, even its own demise.

Miguel Campbell + De:Bug at Fez Club Friday 8th March 2013 After much negotiating, planning and downright begging, one of House music’s true heroes is coming to Sheffield. Miguel Campbell has been galvanised by the House music scene since the early ‘90s, the brains behind tracks like ‘Something Special’ and ‘Baby I Got It’. With solid support from the De:Bug residents, this is set to be a full on party in the re-structured, re-vamped Fez Club. Tickets are due to sell out fast, but can be bought from www.EatMyDisco.com or from EMD HQ opposite SOYO between 12pm to 4pm, Monday to Friday.

Laura Jones Sensoramic Love Chart As DJs go, Laura Jones is up there with the best of them. Regularly pulling in packed out crowds, she’s a world away from the David Guetta pop-infused electro tracks gracing the echelons of the modern chart. After a heightened period of 18 months, Jones has released her own EP, Sensoramic Love Chart. The four track EP is a perfect little gem, filled to the brim with experimental nuggets of electro. Opening track, ‘Let Me In (Original Mix)’, is all bouncy, high synths and space oddity style backing echoes, along with breathy vocals from Jones herself; it’s like we’re Alice and she’s the rabbit, leading us down the hole into her wonderland. The next track,

the Dub Rework of ‘Let Me In’, re-imagines it with darker undertones and heavier grooves. The third rack from the EP, ‘Lose Myself ’, places us firmly in the dreamier aspects of Jones’ mental landscape, with chant-like vocals, chugging grooves and experimental synths. The EP’s closer, ‘Every Thought’, brings us back down to earth with a heavier bass line and strong, echoey synths, bringing us down from the high. Sensoramic Love Chart is short in length, but long in mental fulfilment. It takes us away from the repetitive world of chart synth and elegantly catapults us into the stratosphere.

MARTINEZ BROTHERS The phenomenal Martinez Brothers, two of the best DJ’s around, are gracing the Steel City with their presence this month, dropping epic beats and sparking parties all over the joint as they go. They took some time out of their hectic schedules to sit down and have a chat with us, this is what they had to say! We’re all looking forward to your Sheffield set this May – it promises to be one of the biggest nights of the year – what can we expect from your set?

You better be ready to dance that’s for sure, good music and a lot of dancing. And ass shaking and dancing. Good times.

Do you enjoy life on the road?

Erm, depends where we are going, mostly great but sometimes it can suck - if you’re in a whack country with bad food for example. But usually it’s all good because we have companionship.

How do UK crowds compare with others?

People in the UK are just crazy, you guys are insane, especially in the north - you guys go bonkers. London is a bit more reserved, but you northerners like to get down! Love the energy.

It seems like for a long time, European DJs have dominated the House Scene: is it making a move back across the Atlantic? We sure hope so, the UK definitely took it over for a while. Now in the US we are taking things up again. New York is starting to get really good now. There are better days ahead for sure, just judging by New York it’s all coming up again. A lot of good parties going on.

What kind of position is the international House Scene in now? Who are some other DJs you admire?

For us, the best guys right now - and not because we’re residents - are the Circo Loco guys. Apollonia (Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Soundorom, Shonky), crew are doing really good stuff. Obviously Seth is doing his thing. But there’s a lot of young guys too, Kyle Halls, Jay Daniels, Floating Point, we are glad there’s a lot of young cats in the scene and not dominated by old fogies. it feels good.

Yeah that’s how we feel we had Dyed Soundorom at Fez with the De:bug guys last year it was such an amazing night. If you see him soon tell him Kermit says hi he will know what we mean... I’m sure that you grow tired talking about it, but you’re both so young – do you see yourselves as part of a new movement?

We don’t really see it like a new movement. It’s more like new blood in the scene, like we said and we hope that we can keep the torch lit. No pressure though!

How have things changed for you in terms of style and the way you work since “My Rendition”?

Man, ‘My Rendition’ it was our track and all our ideas, but that track was because of Dennis. we didn’t know how to work the computers and the machines and programmes. We had the ideas, but that result couldn’t have come out without Dennis. From that point on, we can do everything ourselves. It was a great learning experience.

You’ve said that your father was a big influence in your musical upbringing, how so?

In every facet, music and our dad. Not only was he introducing to us to new music and amazing music, but it was the way we bonded. It was a bonding for me, my brother and my dad and was really special. To this day we still love to share music.

Other than those distinct Bronx beats, how has growing up somewhere as culturally and musically diverse as New York City influenced your music?

It definitely has a lot. We haven’t been in New York so much, as much as when we were growing up. We would be lying to say the travel hasn’t influenced us and our music, you can’t negate the rest of the world.

Taking in so many different styles and influences; what is the job of the DJ, both as a musician and a performer?

You have to be a DJ and a performer; the DJ has to make you have a good time. Of course great music selection, but also a DJ that makes me have a good time is one that moves the dancefloor and one that makes you want to party. If you’re not moving the dancefloor, you might as well not be there.

Film | Reviews

film There’s nothing like entering the hushed, darkened space of a cinema theatre, the heady aroma of buttered popcorn filling your nostrils as you stumble up the stairs, the huge screen looming up in awe. We’re no stranger to losing ourselves within the movie world so here’s our top tips for cinema goers this month.

A VISUAL MASTERPIECE

26

Cloud Atlas Director – Tom Tykwer

A Liar’s Autobiography, The Untrue Story Of Monty Python’s Graham Chapman

Original and philosophically minded Science Fiction, codirected by Andy Wachowski - one of half of the brotherly duo behind the Matrix Trilogy, who is now aided by sister Lana and director Tom Tykwer. An all-star cast (Jim Broadbent, Hugh Grant, Susan Sarandon and many more) play people of intertwining lives and adventures (often rather weird ones) throughout the ages. Expect some heavy stuff.

Graham Chapman rises from the grave to tell his life story (or some odd concoction of a life story) which flits between art styles like a class of giddy children with a sugar rush and a pack of crayons. As a result, this film is inconsistent; not just in its visual quality but also in its material. It rarely tries to be anything more than frivolous (one of the few times when an approach for this kind of film is actually a good thing), and is an interesting experience for Python fans the world over, but isn’t quite the fulfilling experience it tries so hard to be.

Lore Director – Cate Shortland

Hitchcock, 12A Director – Sacha Gervasi

Following the end of the Third Reich, a young girl named Lore travels with her family through the German wilderness as the Allied forces close in, seemingly bringing an end to the world she has always known. Eventually, they come across a Jew freed from the concentration camps. Put into contact with a life that she was indoctrinated into believing was inferior to hers, she goes a journey of changing beliefs.

In 2012 we got The Girl, with Toby Jones playing master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock, in a drama about the making of Hitchcock’s 1963 chiller, The Birds. This year, Hitchcock demonstrates Hitch (Sir Anthony Hopkins) on the production of his even more infamous 1960 film, Psycho. Witty script and decent performances (especially a stand-out portrayal of Hitchcock’s wife, Alma, from Helen Mirren) make up for a slightly dull tale which doesn’t quite let us into the psyche of one of cinema’s great masters, despite its attempts.

Interview | Rae Morris

Rae Morris A 19 year old singer-songwriter hailing from Blackpool, Rae Morris is one of the newest voices to break onto the music scene. Praised as being, “understated but strong”, by The Independent, Ray is a girl of maturity beyond her years, forever underestimating her ability. Ahead of her UK tour, we caught up with Ray to discover where her musical passion comes from and what she’s got planned for the year ahead.

First of all, can you tell our readers a little about your background; where you grew up?

I grew up in Blackpool, and I still live there now. Growing up in Blackpool was just totally normal and I have an amazing family there that I wouldn’t be without.

How did you first become interested in music? How did you come to the decision that you wanted to pursue a career in music? Music was always a big interest of mine. In fact, it was less of an interest and more of just a constant thing that I thought was as normal as brushing your teeth or eating your tea! I really started wanting to pursue it as a career when I got to college and grew up a little. I guess I never thought it was remotely possible before then.

How hard did you find it to establish yourself in the industry in the very earliest stages of your career?

It definitely wasn’t easy, but because I didn’t have high hopes for the whole thing, I honestly wasn’t expecting much at all! That meant that anything that did happen was a huge surprise and a fantastic bonus. I was just gigging and playing in pubs and bars, taking each day as it would come and learning a lot.

Who would you say are your biggest musical influences and how have they helped shape your sound?

I would say female singer-songwriters inspire me the most. I remember the first time I heard Amy Winehouse on the radio. My dad had taped a Radio 2 show in the car, and I was completely floored; we listened to it over and over. Feist, Kate Bush, Cat Power, Joanna Newsom; I love them all. There’s something about the female vocal that can be so powerful. The simplicity of knowing just that has probably sub-consciously shaped how I do things; I like it to be all about the voice and the song.

For those of our readers who are unfamiliar with your music, how would you describe your sound? I guess it’s like what I just said; my sound is all about the song and the emotion that’s hidden in its meaning. I like things to be pretty simple, mostly just me and the piano.

Starting to record the album has been a really interesting experience; trying to find the balance of keeping it simple but also trying to get the most out of that simplicity, and pushing it to the extremes.

As a singer-songwriter, how do you approach song writing and can you describe your own personal song writing process to us? I usually just sit at the piano and if there is something worth writing about, I hope that it will come! A lot of the time, it doesn’t (laughs)! I love playing vocal melodies on the piano first. I find that it helps me to experiment and keep things different.

You’re getting the chance to headline your own show; can you tell us what we can expect from a Rae Morris show?

Ah, it’s very exciting when you put it like that! I’m incredibly lucky. Up until now, I usually play on my own, with my keyboard and nothing else. But this next tour is going to be slightly different. I’m going to have a couple of friends onstage with me which will be very new and exciting. I’m quite emotional live. In fact I’m quite emotional full stop!

You’re also getting the chance to support Lianne La Havas on her March tour; can you tell us about what we can expect from that and what it’s like to support Lianne on tour? Supporting Lianne is the perfect scenario for me. I think she’s an incredible musician and I’d love to call her a friend now after gigging with her quite a few times in the last year or so. I’m really looking forward to it.

What can we expect next for you in 2013?

I have a new EP coming really soon, and my album is finally on its way! Things really have started to move already this year and it feels nice to be so productive. I do feel genuinely lucky and excited to be doing all of this for another year!

Rae is currently on tour, with her nearest date at St Philip’s Church, Manchester on 22nd March. Check out her website at www. raemorris.co.uk for more information.

Restaurant

REVIEW Fahrenheit Bar and Grill at Genting Club Address: Genting Club Sheffield, St Paul’s Place, Arundel Gate, Sheffield, S1 2PN Teleohone: 0114 228 8980 We visit Fahrenheit Bar and Grill at Genting Club on a bitterly cold January evening; fortunate for us then, that the restaurant lives up to its name. Despite the modern, minimalist décor, the restaurant exudes warmth and the lively welcome with which we are received by experienced restaurant manager Sam is greatly appreciated. As a casino virgin, I was a little apprehensive about playing the tables, but some complementary chips and the helpful, friendly staff persuaded me otherwise – I came out £20 better off! The playing area is a sight to behold, and the opulence of the surroundings gives the experience an exclusive feel that is betrayed only by the warmth of the staff, both in the casino and restaurant. We start our meal with a stop at the bar, which offers a wide selection of beers, wines and house cocktails, all at reasonable prices – cocktails are two for one between Sundays and Thursdays - I’m the designated driver however, so I let my partner reap the benefits of this offer and they haven’t a bad word to say about the selection of tipples. Sam gives us a brief tour of the establishment - introducing us to the spacious entertainment area which welcomes a host of music and cabaret acts, and with its booth seating, looks the ideal location for impressing business clients, before showing us to our table. Sam’s enthusiasm is infectious and he and his team of waiting staff ensure we are well catered for throughout the night. Now, how about some food? We start by sharing the extravagant Antipasto Platter which consists of Prosciutto, Salami Milano, Duck Pâté, Taleggio, Artichokes, Semi-Dried Tomatoes and a Selection of Olives. The Italian themed dish is, for want of a better phrase, a taste sensation; I find the pickled artichokes a revelation while my partner enjoys the duck pâté. We’re also treated to the soup of the day, Carrot and Coriander, which is a rich, pulpy concoction, maybe a little filling for a starter but it is greatly enjoyed all the same. For mains, I am treated to a helping from each of the vegetarian options - firstly, the Josper Grilled Asparagus with Roasted Tomatoes, Parmesan, Salad Leaves and Truffle Oil. Now, there aren’t too many asparagus fans out there, but I can safely say that this is one of the finest dishes I have ever had the pleasure of tasting; the heavy, creamy cheese perfectly complements the bitter tang of the asparagus and the generous portion sits just right. The second, seasonal veggie option is a Fricassee of Wild Mushroom and Roasted Tomato Risotto with Smoked Paprika Cream, which has a very rich, thick texture and leaves a nutty taste on the palette. In terms of taste, the risotto is a delight, but following our huge starter it sits just a little too heavy. As a grill specialist, Fahrenheit pride themselves on their array of juicy, thick steaks, each one matured 35 days before being seared in their molten hot Josper Grill. However tempting their array of steaks are, it’s the Chef ’s Seasonal Selection – full of secret surprises - that we are drawn towards. My partner opts for Crispy Aromatic Roasted Duck Breast with Butternut and Red Thai Curry Sauce, it is a light, flavoursome dish, although not quite spicy enough for my partner who is more accustomed to a Saturday night vindaloo; still, he wolfs it down before sending his compliments to the chef. While both of us are too full for desserts, we are encouraged, in Mr Creosote fashion, to indulge. Well, if I must. I opt for the Lime and Ginger Scented Cheesecake with Blueberry and Gin Compote while my partner chooses Mrs Barton’s Spiced Fruit Crumble with Cornish Ice Cream. The cheesecake is an airy, New York style affair which has been deconstructed, and while I’ve never been a fan of deconstructed deserts, it tastes so good, this is the last thing on my mind. The lime and ginger lend themselves to the classy dish and give it a bite that is rare in such a sweet dish. Neither myself, nor my company know Mrs Barton in a personal capacity, but we both agree that her Spiced Fruit Crumble is the most enjoyable dish of the night, if only for the unadulterated, sweet homely pleasure it provides. The Fahrenheit Bar and Grill wouldn’t need Genting’s support to thrive, when the food is this good the casino is just a bonus. A host of regularly updated offers allow punters to pay a fixed price for meals and gambling chips for a rowdy night out, but Fahrenheit is just a suited to a romantic meal for too. Go on, treat yourself.

Escoffier Evening at the Showroom www.showroomworkstation.org.uk/ escoffierevening This coming March sees The Showroom live up to its reputation as one of the cultural centres of the modern Steel City, with its Escoffier night. Scheduled to take place on Friday 8th March, the night is being hosted to honour the life and legacy of French culinary genius Auguste Escoffier (1846 – 1935), the man largely responsible for revitalising the modern eatery experience and revolutionising the tradition of dining out, in the process shaping it into what we in the post modern era would recognise. The event itself is to take place in the Showroom Café, with doors opening at 7pm, ready for the public to come in and experience culinary history at its very finest. For the price of £25 per person, or with a discount of £5 for Showroom members, comes a night of sophistication, with top notch cuisine, topped off with the delicately fine ambience French establishments in the heart of Paris are so well known for. The night honours the man who recognised the genius of French cuisine, but also saw its failings. Auguste Escoffier, a talented Chef who was the toast of high French society, opened various successful restaurants in his day. He believed that French cuisine was too bogged down in its own cult of mysticism. He is particularly famous for taking the complex recipes that were in vogue in the society of the time, and simplifying them, in the process making French cuisine more accessible to the masses. He was also the Chef who first embraced culinary showmanship, showing his patrons the tricks of the trade, demystifying the art of the French Chef. On the night, Showroom Head Chef, Simon Ayres, will be evoking the memory and legacy of Escoffier by creating some of his finest dishes. Along with his excellently trained team of staff, they will even be putting on an Escoffier style culinary show to feast your eyes upon. Dishes will include Merlot Punch with a Meringue Iceberg, Pan Cooked Duck Breast, Citrus Fondant Potato, String Beans and Duck Juices and Poached Yorkshire Pear Roasted in Filo Pastry, Vanilla Ice Cream and Chocolate Sauce.

The Shakespeare Whisky Files www.shakespeares-sheffield.co.uk

WHISKY FEATURE

The Shakespeare Pub has a collection of over 120 different whisky varieties, and experts Chris Bamford and Robin Baker are here to share their whisky love with us, giving us their top three every month. The first choice is the Mackmyra First Edition, a Swedish single malt that has been around for over ten years. Quite rare, The Shakespeare is one of the few Steel City establishments to offer the tipple. Tasting of the small hand made roasted Swedish Oak barrels it’s stored in, it contains no additives. At 46.1%, it’s fairly strong and is served at 25 ml or 50ml measurements. Served for £3.20 a single. The second choice is Aberlore. At a whopping 59%, it comes straight out of the barrel; it isn’t watered down to standard. Exclusively made in a Sherry Oak cask, it has a fortified wine and Sherry flavour. Described by experts as ‘so bloody nice’, it’s Shakespeare’s most popular non standard whisky! Served for £3.20 a single. The third choice is Port Charlotte Whisky, the brain child of the head brewer at the Bruichladdich distillery on Islay, who wanted to produce late 19th Century tipples. It’s a love or hate affair with this one; a challenge to the taste buds and strongly flavoured. With 46% strength, it’s served for £3.80 a single.

Dada Address: Trippet Lane, Sheffield, S1 4EL, 0114 276 2930

Instead of shots served without a smile, bar Dada offers a warmer welcome, with a barman as charming as the fairy lights that surround him and a swift hand quick to select a fine wine. Whilst relaxing on a traditional wing backed leather chair with a generously filled glass, free books and board games neatly tucked away on shelves to the side of me created a homely vibe, with well-thumbed boxes of ‘Scrabble’ and ‘Operation’ returning me to my childhood. Dada is very much a rustic alternative to the average bar, which typically offers a strict playlist of the Top Forty on repeat. The main attraction for northern Sheffield drinkers could well be the extensive list of beers available, from Indian pale ale to imperial Russian stout, with the quaint bar being impressively stacked full of Thornbridge beer, with additions even including smoked, and fruit beers. Instantly from the outset, Dada stands alone as a vibrant surprise to stumble upon if you happen to fall off West Street – a dark painted exterior beneath loud stencilled lettering is a stark, rock ‘n’ roll contrast to the cosy couches through the doors. Inside, it is the best of Sheffield’s steelworks used in alternative ways, which makes Dada a shabby chic venue, appealing to anyone desperately in search of an extensive choice of unusual beers on draft or simply a drink away from the mainstream. Mismatched steel chairs placed around table tops screened with original art, lie beneath low steel bins used to flatteringly to dim the lights. Low, Indie alternative songs are convincing enough to confirm your suspicions of finding the likes of Luke Pritchard or Daisy Lowe in a glowering corner, whilst every so often a classic anthem will hum against the dark walls. Small homely touches, such as handwritten notices on chalkboards for instance, rest amongst carefully draped fairy lights, making it the perfect intimate venue to hold an event that will be anything other than standard. I somehow got the vibe that Friday and Saturday nights however, are anything but an intimate affair. Open until 1am on a weekend, Dada transforms from a casual, cosy afternoon bar to an evening outlet for presenting local talent, such as up and coming artists, poets and musicians. With hundreds of gig listings slapped onto the walls of local Sheffield talent, upcoming events such as eclectic discos and the presence of Saturday night DJs playing soul, jazz, reggae, rock and ‘guilt free pop’ make Dada the ideal place for some serious toe tapping. No matter what your taste in music and beer, I can guarantee Dada will have it all.

Having opened in December 2012, Helen Porter and Jenny Copley launched Volt to realise their dream of creating a salon space of their own. A vision of black, grey and pink within an amazing space down a cobbled street by the cathedral, the salon creates a warm, relaxing experience for clients with a team of stylists with over 20 years of experience.

Consultation Kate came in with natural blonde roots and a grown out full head of highlights, the hair feeling dry and lack lustre at the ends. She wanted to keep some of the blonde and add more depth and warmth on the roots fading out, making it lighter through the mid-lengths and ends.

Process Helen toned the highlights down at the root area with a caramel tone in between the foils, using Wella Colour Touch semi-permanent dye to create depth and warmth through the root area of the base colour, bringing texture and thickness through the roots. A shade lighter was applied through the mid-lengths and ends, giving the effect of the colour gradually fading out for a subtle ombré effect. The semi-permanent adds luminous shine.

To finish, Helen blow-dried Kate’s hair with a round brush for volume, using Sebastian Volupt volume spray, then trimmed the hair to file off the split ends and encourage growth. She then created waves and body with ceramic straighteners, sculpting the fringe to sweep across, and pinned the length into a loose knot at the side for an informal hair up style.

The salon uses the Sebastian range of shampoos, conditioners and treatments. Helen and Jenny chose the Volupt range for Kate, as her hair can easily fall flat and limp. The product brings the hair up to its maximum shine and volume, and the treatment locks in the colour.

Styling

The Result An amazingly designed salon, Volt is a stunning place to go for a hair transformation – if only for putting your feet up on their fantastic massage chairs! Helen certainly knows her stuff, working with colour to produce a beautiful effect. Keeping the blonde but toning down the brassiness and introducing some darker shades, the look is expertly executed. The sweeping style is beautiful, with sleek and shiny waves.

BEAUTY REVIEW L’Beautique 205 Middlewood Road, S6 4HD 0114 234 1201 Fulfilling all your hair and beauty needs under one roof, L’Beautique is where our insatiable pampering urges took us to this month. Having recently relocated to new premises on Middlewood Road, the salon is definitely worth travelling out of the city centre for. The L’Beautique team, Jenna, Alice and Lauren, specialise in all aspects of hair styling and colouring, wedding hair, children’s trims and men’s barbering, but the salon also allows clients to relax and unwind in their beauty department with Sharon. Offering holistic facials, full body massages, hot stone massage, luxury pedicures and much more, if you need some relaxation this is definitely the door to pop into. With prices that are unreal compared to those in the city centre, L’Beautique is also specialising in Dermalogica facials, one of only a few salons in Sheffield to do so.

Opening Hours

Our roving Beauty reporter took advantage of the salon’s discounted massage at £10 instead of £15, due to snow problems and cancellations. After the stresses and strains of the New Year back at work, this was a godsend! Treated to full back and shoulder massage by the therapist with over 15 years of experience, she applied the perfect amount of pressure using gorgeously smelling aromatherapy oils, easing out many tough knots from the back and shoulders. Leaving dreamy and light as a feather, a massage is definitely just what the doctor ordered.

Injecting Interior Pizazz to your Home A new year means out with the old, and in with the new. Your home probably seems a tad gloomy after the despair of the winter months, needing to go through its own rebirth into a haven you anticipate retreating back to after a stressful day in the office. You need to breathe some new spirit into your home, and this month, interior homebodies are here to give you a few snippets of inspiration on how to get your home ready to welcome in the spring!

Living Room After the endurance test that is the Christmas season, I don’t think any of us can deal with more tackiness; we’ve honestly had our fill. What it is time for however is a metaphorical counter revolution, and the living room, the former bastion of Christmas tat, is the place to make a stand. Go for elegant furniture pieces that recall the sophisticated glamour of yesteryear with a distinctive Edwardian style. It adds a timeless quality that will ensure these often expensive pieces are worth their weight in gold.

Kitchen With this particular room, it’s time to go practical. Don’t you think it’s time to replace all those outdated devices that have probably seen too much use over the festive season anyway? Take the season of rebirth to reinvent your kitchen. One particularly popular gadget right now is the coffee maker. It’s sleek and purposeful, plus it gives you a little pep in your step to welcome in those brisk spring mornings.

Dining Room The dining room can be one of the hardest places to rejuvenate when it’s comes to touching up your furnishings for the spring season; most of the trappings that symbolise the season of new life don’t quite work for this room. One thing that does is oak; it’s a beautiful wood with a gorgeous colour that adds some spring cheer, without connotations of ostentatiousness and decadence, to a room where that sort of thing really isn’t needed. Yes, this one will break the bank, but one beautiful piece of oak furniture will do your dining room the world of good.

Essence Display Cabinet: Oak £699, John Lewis www.johnlewis.com,

After the sheer pain of having to take a shower in a subzero bathroom, things are finally looking up, as you no longer have to dread stepping into the shower whenever the heating breaks down. Following on from that, add some warmth to your bathroom with homely African coloured printed fabrics. They add a sense of exoticism to a room that for the last several months has seemed mundane, a chore to even step into. Bring a sense of Sub-Sahara to your bathroom this spring!

Bedroom Now we’ve moved out of the austerity of the post-Christmas penny pinching months, it’s time to embrace the new season with a bit of luxury, something to enjoy and indulge in. What says luxury better than silk? Silk duvets and sheets in to-die-for metallic tones are perfect for your bedroom this spring; they’re beautiful, light-weight and perfect for that transition into the hot nights of summer. Add some sparkle and glamour to underscore nature’s most beautiful season!

MOTORING The latest Astra VXR from Vauxhall is exciting to look at and thrilling to drive. - Vauxhall Astra VXR 2.0i Turbo -

The muscular stance, the crazily big 20 inch alloy wheels and the leather hip-hugging sports seats aren’t exactly subtle. And if for some reason you’ve had a ‘senile moment’ and need reminding further that you’re not in any ‘normal’ Astra, don’t fret because ‘VXR’ is emblazoned on the steering wheel. So, in terms of looks, the Astra has done a good job of puffing itself up before even going anywhere – but does it deliver on the move? The answer to that is a slightly schizophrenic one: yes, and no. You see, whilst the VXR benefits from chassis modifications to cater for the 2.0 litre turbocharged engine, which produces 276bhp and 295lb ft of torque, the front wheels sometimes find it hard to command the clout. Therefore when you hit the gas hard there’s a lot of torque-steer and

the steering wheel can almost yank itself free from your grip. But this makes the Astra fun – in a challenging sort of way. After all, it is a thoroughbred from Vauxhall’s hothatch stable, and excitable beasts need to be kept in check.

and four-piston callipers demonstrate that Vauxhall and Brembo have worked hard to develop a braking system which will bring a car capable of 0-62mph in 5.9 seconds and 155mph to a swift stop.

On the straights, the mighty motor certainly attracts looks and the deep rumble, building up to a turbo whistle, turns heads. But through the bends is where you’ll grin like a Cheshire cat. This is because, compared with the 1.6 litre turbocharged GTC model, the Astra VXR’s springs have been stiffened by 30 per cent and the car lowered by 10mm, to allow more driver connection on road and track. The result is exceptional traction when the way ahead starts going all twisty on you.

To make life behind the wheel of the mighty motor even more interesting, you have the choice of three chassis settings, which can be selected at the push of a button. ‘Standard’ delivers all-round performance for a range of road driving, with ‘Sport’ stiffening the dampers for reduced roll and tighter body control. ‘VXR’ is the most extreme mode. Not only does it enhance throttle responsiveness, and change the instrument backlighting from white to red, but the dampers are stiffened even more and tilt is further reduced during cornering.

When it comes to scrubbing off speed – the almighty Astra has it covered. The vast cross-drilled, ventilated front discs

There’s no doubt about it, this is an exhilarating car to

Great; but if I wanted the attention of spotty 18 year olds wearing baseball caps backwards then I’d have bought an old Nova GTE with a fake turbo whistler shoved in the tailpipe. No, for me, the Astra VXR isn’t quite classy enough – but at nearly £27,000 on the road, you’ll need to have a fairly respectable occupation to be able to afford one. Fat Loss – A Diet or a Lifestyle

British Bodybuilding is the ultimate authority when it comes to bodybuilding and weight loss. Luckily for us at Chic Asian Lifestyle Magazine, they’ve consented to imparting some of their expert body building knowledge with us. This month - Calories.

32

Chic Asian Lifestyle Magazine | Issue 12

Food contains calories, the more food you eat, the more calories you consume; hence the more likely you are to gain weight. However, a calorie is not something we need to pay that much attention to, as a calorie is simply a measurement of how much heat energy is released when foodstuffs are burned in a bomb calorimeter. The word calorie is actually derived from the Latin word ‘calor’ which means heat. Scientists put foodstuffs into a bomb calorimeter, where everything is completely burned, and the energy of heat combustion is then measured. The human body is not a bomb calorimeter. A bomb calorimeter doesn’t know the difference between calories, but the human body does. The Keto diet (no carbs) is a good example of this. Following this kind of diet people can eat significantly more calories and still lose weight.

The reason people can lose weight on a Keto diet is because the human body knows the difference between calories. Eating no carbs means that the body will have to convert dietary fats and protein into glucose, putting the body in a calorie deficit, as the metabolism of proteins and fats to glucose, requires more energy than it can provide. Fitness Fix

With Bodyflo’s Paul Morton

With summer on its way, I want to help you make this attempt to get the beach body you’re after painless as possible. With this in mind, here are my five tips for training: 1. Make It Count – Stories of epic two hour gym sessions may sound impressive, but it’s the short and effective sessions that make the difference. Paul’s Recommendation – 45 minutes of high intensity training 2. Use Your Entire Body – This is important, no matter what your goals. As well as being a more effective calorie burning method, training your whole body will promote better posture and a more balanced physique. Paul’s Recommendation – No isolated exercises, eg. avoid bicep curls, try pull ups 3. Keep It Simple – There is an increasing amount of

‘fancy’ equipment in almost every gym, but the fact is basic exercises are often the most beneficial. Paul’s Recommendation – Get familiar with squats and press ups

4. Accumulate – There is no getting around it - we are all busy people, and to top it off we are all really good at making excuses, so putting an hour aside to train may be difficult. Doing short bursts of exercise a couple of times a day will be a suitable replacement. Paul’s Recommendation – Perform a bodyweight circuit * 5. Don’t Stop! – Ok, so before you go and follow the advice above, there is one thing you must do above all else and that is, keep it up. Sadly, training hard for a week or two doesn’t get results. Paul’s Recommendation – Make it part of your everyday routine *Like Paul Morton at Bodyflo to find out more

Super Food

www.bodyflofitness.co.uk

The Black Bean

The black bean (specifically in this case the black turtle bean), is a classic staple of Latin cuisine. They’re one of the ultimate super foods, and are especially useful if you want to lose of few of those extra pounds. Loaded to the brim with protein, fibre, molybdenum, zinc and copper, black beans have all the health benefits of foods which contain these materials, without any of the downsides. The benefits of the black bean go way beyond the normal call of duty however, as they are fantastic sources of anti oxidants, which work to prevent disease and strengthen the immune system. The high anti oxidant count comes from the black bean’s high concentration of anthocyanins, which form the dark coating of the bean. The darker the bean, the higher the count, and the higher the level of anti oxidants. The black bean has high protein (important for muscle mass), high fibre (important for regulating your digestive system) and high amounts of anti oxidants – they’re the miracle bean! Now you don’t have to feel guilty for getting that cheeky chicken in black bean sauce from your local Chinese! Remember to only eat cooked. Chic Asian Lifestyle Magazine | Issue 12

FOOD The Potato Oven

Amigos Mexican Kitchen

Who can resist a steaming, hunger busting jacket potato laden with your favourite topping? Tucked away on London Road lies an establishment taking the humble potato to another level – The Potato Oven.

The range of Halal eateries in Sheffield is forever expanding, and Amigos Mexican Kitchen on London Road brings a taste of the Latino quarter to the selection.

Web: www.thepotatooven.co.uk - Address: 224-230 London Road, Sheffield, S2 4LW Phone:0114 258 5900

Going from strength to strength, since opening only a year or so ago, The Potato Oven has moved from its previous premises into a much larger café-takeaway a few doors down the road. Word is spreading of the irresistibly moreish nibbles available, all of which are Halal.

Web: www.amigosmexicankitchen.co.uk Address: 224-230 London Road, Sheffield, S2 4LW

Potato fillings range from the ordinary to the more stimulating – beans, tuna, chicken tikka, lamb balti, prawn mayonnaise – as they say, the filling’s up to you (but we’re especially partial to a taste of the lamb balti!). All potatoes are accompanied with a range of fresh salad and can even be served without the skin for pure potato bliss.

Having moved into new, larger premises a little further down the road in November 2012, the restaurant can now attempt to meet the huge demand from hungry customers after authentic food. Offering both a main menu and takeaway menu, Amigos mixes popular Mexican dishes with some lesser known Latin specialities.

Don’t be fooled by the name though – it’s not all about the potatoes. Also available are a range of tongue-temptingly good paninis, filled with anything from chicken tikka to lamb curry, made and toasted to order and oozing with cheesy flavour. Their range of pasta will certainly fill a hole, or for something lighter try a salad, made to suit your taste.

The new restaurant is a bright, airy and fresh, with lime green and orange accessories adding a splash of colour, and a mezzanine level providing extra seating.

Sweet teeth are also catered for with their sensational range of desserts, including school classics like cornflake tart, Bakewell tart and flapjack, served with or without custard, their milkshakes made with real chocolate bars, range of ice cream and fruity smoothies and juices.

Starters range from the favourite crunchy Nachos to Avocado and Cactus Salad, or try a larger dish to share like the Taco Tray – soft corn tortilla, chipotle chicken, beef tenga, refried beans, lamb liver, garlic and chili prawns, pickled red onions and a selection of dips.

For total satisfaction of a hungry appetite (or to simply quieten that urge for something sweet), The Potato Oven is ready and waiting load up your plate.

For the main, the menu is split into five sections – From The Grill, Home-Made Burgers, Sizzling Fajitas, Latin Dishes and Amigos Street Food. The Latin Dishes include some tastes direct from the streets of Mexico City, like the Lamb Ensopado, braised in chipotle sauce and coconut milk, served with coriander rice, and the Chicken Poblanos, with Poblano chillies, cream cheese, gratin potatoes and salsa Rojas. Amigos Street Food, however, brings the irresistibly authentic tastes and aromas of the streets of Mexico straight to Sheffield, with Burritos, Quesadillas, Enchilada, Tostadas, Chimichanga, Gordita, Tacos, Panini and Wraps, with fillings ranging from beef chilli, to chicken chipotle, to pepper and corn. To polish off your visit to the world of Mexico, squeeze in a sweet to satisfy any sugar craving, including the Key Lime Pie, Dark Chocolate Brownie and Walnut and Banana Cake. Dust off your sombrero, pick up your cactus and shake your maracas on down to the Mexican extravaganza that is Amigos.

Cake ‘R’ Us

Web: www.cakerus.co.uk - Address: 151 London Road, S2 4LH and 142 Devonshire Street, S3 7SF It’s always time for a cheeky little cake stop, and Cake ‘R’ Us has just that special something to quell that sugar craving. Having carved a well-deserved reputation in their shop and bakery on London Road, they recently opened a new shop and café in the heart of the city on Devonshire Street. Apart from their amazing array of cake creations, what really sets them apart from the competition is that every treat is Halal. Serving a huge range of cake flavours, tastes range from the exotic Mango Cake, to the original Oreo Cake, to the sublime Black Forest Gateaux. Every slice uses fresh cream, tasting incredibly light and fluffy leaving plenty of room for just one more piece! Celebration cakes can be made to order and personalised, and as well as sweet treats, the bakery also offers a range of Chinese pastries, including the Fried Donut Stick, Tuna Puff and Egg Tart. Give in to temptation – there’s always time for a little sweet something at Cake ‘R’ Us.

Zeugma

Web: www.zeugmaiki.com - Address: 146 London Road, Sheffield, S2 4LT - Phone: 0114 258 2223 In the cultural Aladdin’s Cave that is London Road, lies one of Sheffield’s most glowing hidden gems – Zeugma. Bringing a taste of the mystical realms of ancient Turkey, stepping off the street your senses are met with a sight of authentic Turkish design. Rustic wooden tables are framed by eye-catching mosaics and lights imported from Turkey, one of which is the famous Gypsy Girl mosaic depicting a beautiful girl, as discovered by archaeologists in the restaurant’s namesake, the ancient city of Zeugma. Her eyes follow you around the room as though with a life of their own, whilst the smoky aroma of the traditional open grill entices you to take a dip into the varied cuisine that is of Turkey. Having been open for eight years, Zeugma has earned a flawless reputation, with celebrity regulars such as Ronnie O’Sullivan, Tim Witherspoon and Jessica Ennis, and the collection of customer compliment slips pinned to the wall is more than a testament to their success. The popularity encouraged Zeugma to open a little brother a few doors down the road, with Zeugma Iki.

meet our new chef

allam ullah

giving you monthly recipes to follow

We began our journey into the realms of Turkey with a starter of Lahmacun, a delicacy readily available on the streets of Turkey but less so in the UK due to the skill required to cook. Oval shaped, freshly baked dough, baked thin and crispy and topped with finely minced lamb, garlic, parsley, tomatoes and red and green pepper, Lahmacun is a taste sensation in disguise, seemingly simple yet bursting with flavour. Crispy yet doughy, the flavouring was unbelievably moreish, leaving me yearning for more! For the main we tried the Mixed Grill, consisting of a platter loaded with Adana (a renowned dish of Southern Turkey, consisting of very finely chopped prime lamb mixed with flat leaf parsley, peppers and chilli, charcoal grilled), Shish Barbeque, Chicken Shish and Lamb Chops, served with rice, salad and slices of naan bread. Cooking the meat on the open grill gave it a smokey, barbequed taste; delicious and juicy. The chicken was favoured perfectly, and although I’d previously never been a fan of the lamb kebabs, the Adana was on another level – tender, packed with taste and quickly polished off with the rice. The accompanying Cacik sauce set off the delicate spice perfectly, with cool cucumber and a hint of garlic in a creamy yoghurt sauce. The inexperienced may think that the Turkish cuisine is all about the grill and less about the sweets, but they would be wrong. We topped the meal off with Kunefe – shredded noodles with mozzarella cheese, served hot with honey syrup. Although slightly apprehensive of the use of cheese in a dessert, this was quickly abolished after a taste – crispy, wheaty noodles (think Shredded Wheat!) in a devilishly sweet, chewy syrup. A cup of Turkish tea polished it all off. Before entering Zeugma, I must admit I considered Turkish cuisine to be all about the doner kebabs but how wrong I was; a true taste has resulted in a whole new world of flavours and tastes, made straight in front of me in a unique, open grill style, leaving the rest of the menu something I definitely want to try.

CHARITY & FUNDRAISING

Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity What do they do?

How are funds raised?

Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is an organisation who works to support the work of Weston Park Cancer Hospital. They take donations and hold fundraisers to support cancer research to aid the citizens of Yorkshire and Derbyshire. This money is put towards specialised cancer treatments that cannot be provided by local hospitals. Through the research funded by the charity, the hospital can treat unique cases that need unique expertise. Without this money, that treatment would just not be possible.

How can I get involved?

As a volunteer organisation they need all the help they can get. This year the Charity has a fundraising goal of £1.3 million, in order to fund further cancer research. They put on a whole host of charity fundraisers from festivals to fairs, and over the years everyone from the hospital’s staff to friends and relatives of patients get involved, have a good time, and raise a bit of cash in the process!

If you’re just itching to get on board and help, then there are two ways to do so. You can either fill in a form online, or download a paper version, both found at www.wphcancercharity.org.uk. The charity also accepts donations of all kinds, and you can donate via several means including post, gift, gift aid donation and even phone! You can also leave money in your will or leave a gift in remembrance of a departed love one.

Why was the charity set up? Over 6,000 patients are diagnosed with cancer every year in this region alone and the hospital usually receives around 60,000 visits a year. It needed the means to raise funds and the charity was set up to provide just that. The hospital is particularly unique because it is one of four specially designated cancer research hospitals throughout the nation, and it has arguably the best radiology department in the country. The hospital needs the money to maintain the high standard of care they provide.

What’s planned for the future? The Charity is really looking to get people involved in raising cash in 2013. One of the biggest events is coming next month with the Sheffield Rocks for Cancer Aid event on Saturday 23rd March at O2 Academy. It’s basically going to be three hours of non-stop tunes from special guest DJs and surprise music acts - £10 for an advanced ticket and £5 on the door. May also sees the Charity taking part in the Sheffield Marathon!

St Luke’s Hospice www.stlukes-hospice.org What do they do?

St Luke’s Hospice, located at Little Common Lane, is an assisted living facility that cares for people over the age of 18 with incurable diseases. The facility aims to provide long term care, in the process controlling patients’ symptoms, doing all they can to alleviate their pain and ultimately providing the best possible quality of life. The people of St Luke’s Hospice are very generous and give both their time and services completely free of charge.

Why was the charity set up?

The Charity was originally set up due to the overwhelming demand for pastoral care for the residents of the Steel City with incurable diseases. They care for around 1,400 people yearly. Many of those patients never even set foot in the facility since they have a fantastic at home care service. They survive through generous donations and fundraising events. It’s the perfect place for people who have known someone with an incurable disease to get on board and volunteer.

How are funds raised?

St Luke’s Hospice is extremely active in the fundraising department, hosting dozens of events each year to ensure that they stay on target and raise enough cash to keep their projects and care programmes going. Individuals and groups can host events and they take part in everything from local fairs to the Sheffield Marathon on a daily basis. With their dedicated team of volunteers they raise thousands of pounds each year, which all goes towards ensuring the continuation of top quality care.

What’s planned for the future?

St Luke’s Hospice encourages active fundraising to help them carry out their commitment of care to the residents of Sheffield. Taking part in several events each year, this year they are an official charity for the Sheffield Marathon. This will give donators the chance to sponsor an official fundraiser for the run. Other official fundraisers include the Triple Whammy; a chance to take part in three attention gabbing activities all under the same roof, and the Skydive for St Luke’s, pretty self-explanatory. It’ll be a real thrill!

How Can I Get Involved?

If you wish to help you can in a number of ways, donating money online or joining their fundraising efforts. One way in which you can help fundraise is by joining the Hospice’s group fundraising efforts and work as part of a team. You can also help by the unconventional method of joining their Sheffield lottery, with a current rollover sum of £10,000. You can also become a corporate partner of the charity and donate your business acumen. To find out how visit www.stlukeshospice.org.uk.

Party For The People www.partyforthepeople.org.uk Forged from the vibrant underground UK music scene, Party For The People is a non-profit organisation with the sole aim of raising money for charity. Having initially started raising money by selling sweets, Party For The People are now selling tickets and partying to help to generate funds. They work with a range of charities, currently focusing on CRESST (educating children and young adults in conflict resolution skills) and Leeds Little Livers Campaign (run by Leeds Teaching Hospital Charitable Foundation, offering support for children needing liver transplants). Upcoming events include Collect! at DLS, featuring Pig & Dan, Detroit Grand Pubahs and Gareth Whitehead on 9th March, and on the 13th April featuring Andrew Weatherall, Ivan Smagghe, Daniel Avery and The Revenge. AHS Foundation www.ahs-foundation.com Whenever events like Red Nose Day roll around, the nation’s attention is always drawn to the countless number of people out there in the third world who need our help. The drawback to something like that, is that once the day has come and gone, it tends to slip our collective minds that these people need our help. What we need is something more local, a charity that we can help day in and day out, and make our own physical contributions to. If you’re looking for something like this, then welcome to the AHS Foundation.

The Charity

Located a stone’s throw away, in Doncaster, the AHS Foundation is a charity who look to help the poorest, most in need people in the world. They dedicate their efforts to saving lives, improving living and working conditions, as well as rebuilding communities and infrastructures in areas affected by natural disasters. They work by providing training initiatives to local communities, teaching them how to lift themselves above their circumstances. It has fantastic long term benefits for the way people live and work in their communities. Their latest projects include efforts to provide aid to 12,000 people in numerous communities in Kashmir, which was devastated by an earthquake back in 2005.

The Foundation

The charity itself is borne from struggle and hardship. It was initially set up by Nadeem Shah in honour of the memory of his late father, Ahmed Hassan Shah. Since that point, the charity has grown and grown, and now a board of trustees oversee the charity’s efforts to aid victims of natural disaster.

The Fundraising

They manage this by hosting numerous fundraisers on a yearly basis, with the most prevalent being their coffee mornings, which take place regularly and are designed to inform and educate people, to make sure that the plight of those suffering is acknowledged and understood. Future events are taking place throughout 2013, with everything possible on offer as a way to raise vital funds.

Getting Involved

This is an extremely noble cause, and if you wish to get involved there are several ways to do so. If you wish to join in with activities you can either join the events or fundraising staff. You can also donate directly via the AHS website, and even a donation of £1 can provide vital medicine (e.g. £1 buys 100 Ibuprofen tablets). To find out how to get involved visit www.ahs-foundation.com

What your donation can do £1 = Dehydration Salt Sachet (Six Pack) £1 = Antibiotic Syrup £2 = 100 Ibuprofen Tablets £30 = Nebuliser £50 = Sponsor a Health Adviser for 1 week £70 = Sponsor a Pharmacist for 1 week £75 = Sponsor a Square foot of the health centre £100 = Sponsor a Doctor for 1 week £250 = Hospital Bed £500 = Sponsor the Dispensary for 1 month Chic Asian Lifestyle Magazine | Issue 12

Wedding Exhibition | Shaadi Fayre

WEDDING EXHIBITION

The Shaadi Fayre The period between the proposal and the wedding is one of intense pressure and misery for the bride and groom in question. It’s all choices and decisions, which dress will perfectly flatter that figure? What food can be eaten by everybody, no matter preference and allergies? How extravagant should we be with the design and staging? Quite frankly, it’s enough to drive us insane, and that’s before the day itself. Sheffield’s newlyweds-to-be saw a break from the stress of wedding planning last month with the coming of The Shaadi Fayre.

20

Chic Asian Lifestyle Magazine | Issue 12

Sunday 17th February saw a horde of wedding specialists descend onto the Steel City, all ready and waiting to sell their wares and lift the burden. The wedding fair, taking place at the Sheffield Wednesday FC football ground, proved a massive success as prospective brides and grooms descended onto the grounds like ravenous beasts, all ready and waiting to take advantage of this event, the first of its kind Sheffield has ever put on. With a particular focus on Asian wedding products, the best and brightest in Asian wedding companies came out for the event, with top notch companies such as Chandi Weddings, Asianshaadi.com, Asira.co.uk, Apna Sounds and Newroomstyle at the helm of this fantastic event. The stalls and demonstrations put on by these companies and many more proved a spectacular success, the colours, sights and sounds were awesome to behold, and with wedding apparel as the currency of the day, it meant big business and a lot of satisfied customers.

However, big business wasn’t all the day had to offer, as the organisers put on a whole roster of events to delight and entertain the awestruck crowds. A particular hit proved to be the fashion show, which saw top Asian fashion designers wrangle their best models, drape them head to toe in the finest Asian wedding attire and catapult them onstage to strut their stuff. The outfits were quite simply stunning, with everything from the traditional to the avante guarde sashaying down the runway to the delight of the entranced spectators. With additional live music by the sensational Khiza and a free prize draw for lucky brides, the day proved to be a massive success. Quite frankly, Sheffield’s brain-fried newlyweds to be needed it and for all our sakes, we really hope to see a lot more of this kind of thing!

Cutlers Spice | South Asia to South Yorkshire to Slovenia

CUTLERS SPICE Popular Indian cuisine house, Cutlers Spice, which has brought the best in South Asian cookery to the streets of the Steel City for many a year, are upping their game come 2013. Up and coming chef, Allam Ullah, was chosen by the illustrious publication, Curry Life Magazine, to take part in an ambassadorial trip to Slovenia.

South Asia to South Yorkshire to Slovenia

Having jetted off to the Eastern European nation on Tuesday 19th February, the trip was a nine day extravaganza, where the good people at Curry Life Magazine brought the art of curry cooking to the citizens of Slovenia. Ullah has previously worked with Curry Life Magazine before, and even went to India on a good will trip which proved a massive success; establishing him as a top notch curry chef in the process. He was the perfect choice. The trip fell into two distinct parts. The first was a special luxury curry cooking dinner and demonstration on Friday 21st February. Cooking for 100 VIP guests, Allam Ullah (the only Sheffield chef there) and seven other British Chefs cooked up a storm of traditional Indian curry dishes, in the process imparting their wisdom to a few European chefs along the way. The second element took up the rest of the trip; a massive trade fare. Allam Ullah along with the seven other UK curry specialists handled the catering side of things, importing a truck load (literally) of the finest curry ingredients the UK has to offer, with sponsors of the event including Eastern Spices, Cobra and Kingfisher donating their finest products for the people of Slovenia. It was a smash hit; you can see why, as the city they travelled to only have two curry houses, which are always ram packed! There was a significant demand and Allam Ullah, along with his compatriots, made sure this demand was filled. Away from the Curry Expo, Allam Ullah, who is training to take over Cutlers Spice once his parents retire, is going on up in the world, and has some exciting projects coming up. One of these is a meeting with two Michelin Star chefs in April, one of whom he might gain the chance to collaborate with later in the year. Ullah is really raising his game in 2013 and we wait with a poppadum shaped appetite to see what he does next! The Slovenia Curry Expo was a huge success, and Allam Ullah’s trip to the heart of Eastern Europe is only the beginning of what he can bring to the Sheffield curry scene in 2013. Whatever happens next, it’s bound to be creative, innovative and most of all exciting!

Interview | Afshan Saqib

Afshan Saqib Sheffield has its very own hair and make-up maestro in its midst – director of Beauty Beneath, Afshan Saqib. Not only running a successful ladies only salon in Attercliffe, Afshan has also competed in and won countless make up competitions, through which catching the eye of the Art Deco Make Up Couture team. Having adorned the faces of stunning soap stars at the recent National Television Awards, Afshan is a blusher brush wielding, eye palette brandishing force to be reckoned with, and we caught up with her for an insight into her world.

Chic Asian Lifestyle Magazine | Issue 12

Interview | Afshan Saqib

Can you start by telling us how you got started and what inspired you to go into the beauty business? I started when I was young, just from my passion for hair and make up really. Friends and family told me I was talented so I started to further my skills and focus on my passion as a career. I was born to be a make-up star! What inspired you to open Beauty Beneath? I had difficulty myself finding somewhere to get my hair done as I wear a headscarf; it was hard to find somewhere that offered mainstream, modern styles with privacy for ladies. From this I saw a niche in the market and opened the first salon in Sheffield with an environment to create a womenonly environment. What would you say is your overall approach to the art of beauty? What’s your beauty philosophy? As make-up artists, we see the industry as creative imagination, able to put things together to create masterpieces on the models. Make-up artistry is having the confidence to manipulate colour and transfer this onto the face. You recently worked as a make-up artist at the National Television Awards, can you tell us how this came about? After winning the Nationals of Professional Beauty International Make-Up Awards and representing Great Britain in the competition in Germany, supporters of the competition, Art Deco Make Up Couture, spotted me and offered me the opportunity of working on high profile jobs. Art Deco supply and apply make-up to TV programmes and soaps, and demonstrate the products to the stars. I was on the Senior Artistry Team for the Awards.

Which stars did you have the chance to meet and work with? What were they like in real life? Loads of different people – I don’t really watch the soaps so I’m not sure! But Moira from Emmerdale, Michelle Keegan… all the people from Emmerdale and Coronation Street. Do they tell you how they’d like their make-up or do you decide how to do it? They have an idea of how they want it to look, bringing a picture or explaining how they’d like it, and we create the look for them. What have you learnt and taken away with you from your experience at the National Television Awards? When you work with celebrities, you have a different attitude towards them than the general public do as you have to be professional and just see them as normal people. It also develops your confidence, as when celebrities and people in the industry like your work, it inspires you and you progress within the make-up industry. What’s next for you in 2013? I’m hoping to get more jobs within the TV industry and arrange shoots with some of the stars, like the one with Caroline Poole we have coming up. I’m also hoping to participate in shoots for movies. There’s lots planned for myself and Beauty Beneath! Beauty Beneath 620 Attercliffe Road, Sheffield, S9 3QS 0114 242 2122 www.beautybeneathsalon.co.uk

How was the night? How did it go? Were you star struck at all? It was extremely good fun, the stars are lovely and down to earth. As make-up artists we have to remain professional, not screaming fans! I chatted to them as normal people, and we exchange phone numbers to stay in contact. For example, I’ve previously worked with Caroline Poole from X Factor and we’re currently organising an underwater shoot with her – we do their make up for them when they need and they model for us when we need! Our Health pages have had a total revamp, with columns from the experts at British Bodybuilding and Bodyflo, plus we check out a superfood and an alternative form of fitness each month. Chic’s petrol-head takes a spin in the Vauxhall Astra VXR, plus we report on head chef at Cutler’s Spice, Allam Ullah’s trip to Slovenia, AHS Foundation’s charity mission and our hot-footed traveller takes a trip to Dubai to tempt you into a welcome break. Finally, I’d like to take this chance to introduce myself as your new Editor and to welcome you into this month’s luxuriant Chic Asian Lifestyle Magazine. Don’t forget to flip over for Chic Lifestyle, feast your eyes on the mag’s new style and brace yourself for more interesting changes to come!
