what’s on Noise Off Tour Lyceum

The Taming of the Shrew Lyceum

The multi-award-winning comedy will be coming to Sheffield this month for one week only! Michael Frayn’s “Noise Off ” has been hailed as one of the greatest British comic plays ever written. After its sell-out London run, the Old Vic’s smash sensation is heading around the country to tickle us all with their antics.

The Touring Partnership presents The Taming of the Shrew, and in true Shakespearian style, no romance is straight forward; instead it’s riddled with problems, mistaken identity and deceitful intentions.

Monday 13 May – Saturday 18 May

The play itself centres on a play within a play. Didn’t get that? It’s a play within a play within a play! Expect backstage antics, funny frolics and laugh out loud slapstick moments. With a cast of the finest actors, including Neil Pearson (of Bridget Jones’ Diary) and Maureen Beattie (of Lewis and The Bill), this is a show not to be missed. To book tickets call the Box Office on 0114 249 6000 or visit www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk.

Wednesday 8 May – Saturday 11 May

This darkly comic romance tells the tale of two suitors battling for the attention and the hand of the beautiful Bianca, whist Petruchio weds Bianca’s less than friendly sister Kate for money. But can a marriage based on money not love really ever last? If you’re wondering where you’ve heard that plot before, “Ten Things I Hate About You” was a modernisation of this classic tale. Visit Sheffield Theatres Box Office for tickets or call the ticket line on 0114 249 6000.

International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia Millennium Gallery Friday 17 May at 6pm

Journey, Whitesnake and Thunder Motorpoint Arena Monday 20 May

For the first time ever, three mega-bands take to the same stage in this tour of epic proportions. “Don’t stop believing” in Journey whilst they take you through a host of their American rock hits, of which they’ve had 19 in the top 40 so far. Co-headlining the tour will be rock’n’roll gods, Whitesnake, playing hits such as “Here I Go Again” (you’ve got it stuck in your head already, haven’t you?) and “Still Of The Night”. Supporting the tour is yet another treat of music legends, Thunder, who split up back in 2009 but reformed in 2012 for Christmas shows and have yet again decided to take to the stage for this extra special tour. Tickets are available from the Arena Box Office or on the ticket line 0114 256 5656.

As part of “Museums at Night 2013”, Sheffield Museums presents the “International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia”. This is a chance to learn more about gay rights with historic emphasis on the struggle for equal rights. There will be a talk about Sheffield’s earliest gay rights activist, Edward Carpenter, along with performances from the “OutLoud” choir and music from DJ Karl Olsen. For history buffs there will also be an exploration into Sheffield’s LGBT history from way back in the 1960s right up to the 1990s, and theatre and craft activities from the “Pansy Project”. The event is free and put on in celebration of International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia.

Western Park May Fayre Western Park Sunday 19 May

Travel back in time this May to the Western Park May Fayre. This old time event has something for everyone. Take a look at the range of classic and vintage cars or be regaled with stories told by traditional Victorian characters, or take a ride on the mini-steam train. There will also be a fairground with old fashioned rides such as a carousel and a helter skelter, along with many children’s rides. On the Victorian bandstand there will be a mix of live modern and traditional music to keep you entertained all day long. The fayre is being held by the Sheffield City Council Events Team in association with The University of Sheffield and Real Radio. Entry is free and the fayre opens at 11am, so get there early to start your day out in style.

Lee Nelson Sheffield City Hall Tuesday 28 May

The comic genius of Lee Nelson, A.K.A Simon Brodkin, is set to grace the Sheffield City Hall stage this May with his brand new 2013 stand up performance. You probably know him best from “Lee Nelson’s Well Good Show” and recently on the BBC, “Lee Nelson’s Well Funny People”, in which Simon plays a host of characters and alter-egos. His most popular alter-ego has to be Lee Nelson; the outspoken chav lad who will be the host of his latest show with quality jokes and a whole lot of banter. And yes, there will be a great deal of audience interaction, so don’t be shy! Guest appearances from other characters include Dr Bob, Jason Bent and more. In Lee’s own words: “Go on, it’s not like there’s anything else to do in Sheffield”! Ouch. Tickets are available from Sheffield City Hall Box Office or on 0114 2798 9789.

Deathtrap

Library Theatre Tuesday 21 May – Saturday 25 May

Sleeping Beauty Lyceum

Tuesday 21 May – Saturday 25 May Acclaimed choreographer Matthew Bourne OBE returns to the world of ballet and the music of Tchaikovsky, this time with an exquisite production of the classic fairy tale, Sleeping Beauty. This gothic masterpiece sees Princess Aurora, born back in 1890 when fairies, vampires and altogether dark magic reined the land, move to the modern day when she is held under a horrible and seemingly unbreakable spell. This is a supernatural love story to surpass all supernatural love stories (you might forget the likes of Twilight after watching this), and with the dance styling of Matthew Bourne this is a show not to be missed by culture lovers. Visit Sheffield Theatres Box Office for tickets or call the ticket line on 0114 249 6000.

A tale of murder, theft and plagiarism, “Deathtrap” by Ira Levin is the second instalment of the vintage classic season presented by the Tudor Players. A Broadway playwright suffering from a case of writers’ block decides to solve the problem by stealing a student’s play. But how will he get away with it without the student noticing? One word: murder. And if you think we’ve given too much away there, you’re wrong; there are plenty of plot twists and turns along the way to ensure that you’re never quite sure how the play will turn out. Expect spine chilling suspense mixed with a fair share of laughs to keep you on your toes! For tickets call the ticket line on 0114 285 3450. Chic Lifestyle Magazine | Issue 51

VINTEDGE We buy and sell vintage items specialising in 60’s and 70’s furniture and curios. Second hand furniture doesn’t necessarily have to be shabby; in fact it can be quite stunning. Take the range of items at Vintedge, for example! Parents of five, Sally and Andy Mastin, showed some real entrepreneurial spirit and a whole lot of bravery when they left their careers to open their very own vintage furniture and accessories store at 448 Abbeydale Road. After spending a number of years collecting G Plan furniture and a stunning collection of vintage classics, the couple knew that it was time to get a shop to sell and display all the pieces they’ve collected! With beautifully maintained pieces, the shop is an Aladdin’s cave, filled with a number of unique treasures. The husband and wife duo have recently extended their business by buying the adjoining premises to the shop and are now renting out the ten units within it for as little as £60 a week!

Mirage Cigarettes | News

D o You Really Know W h a t Yo u ’ re In h a li n g?

Mirage Cigarettes 0845 475 0148 www.miragecigarettes.co.uk E-cigarettes may be safer than smoking but make sure you know what you’re inhaling before you put the stick to your lips! Electronic cigarettes are a relatively new product on the market, so at the moment there are many brands out there which are unregulated, meaning the user doesn’t actually know what they’re inhaling. Whilst ‘vaping’ is becoming ever more popular, the potential risks of unregulated e-cigarettes and e-liquid are becoming more evident. For example, a user cannot be sure of the dosage within an unregulated e-cigarette, meaning they could be inhaling stronger amounts than they were used to as a smoker. Users may also not be sure of the additives used in e-liquid, which is a little terrifying, to say the least! E-Liquid that is not made or tested in the UK should not be used. There are risks if you use any

untested products; why jeopardise your body, just to save a few pounds a year? Thankfully, recently a new regulating body has been founded which aims to ensure that e-cigarettes are exactly what they say on the tin. The Electronic Cigarette Industry Trade Association (ECITA) has created the Industry Standard of Excellence (ISE) which covers legal requirements for the distribution of e-cigarettes and maintains a high standard of customer service within the industry. Mirage Cigarettes offer a fully UK tested brand, on which you can rely. Choosing a brand which is regulated, such as Mirage, means that there is no ambiguity when it comes to product authenticity and the product is tested to high standards, meaning you know what you’re inhaling contains what it should and nothing it shouldn’t. As with anything else you put in your body, you need to be sure that you aren’t doing yourself more harm than good, and by using Mirage you can be sure that you’re looking after yourself.

A Force Majeure to be Reckoned With

EDDIE IZZARD In 2011 Eddie Izzard, the man who turned talking ‘Bollocks’ into an art form, performed and sold–out Madison Square Garden in New York. He spent a three-month residency at the www.dix-heures.net Théâtre de Dix Heures in Paris performing STRIPPED: ‘Tout en Francais’ (in French!) and then became the first stand-up to play a solo show at Los Angeles’ legendary Hollywood Bowl. It was an extraordinary year from an extraordinary man. Never one to rest on his laurels, Izzard now plans to take on the world with a brand-new comedy tour, Force Majeure. Force Majeure will be the most extensive comedy tour ever. It begins its mammoth journey around the globe during spring 2013. From Cardiff to Kathmandu, Moscow to Mumbai, Izzard will visit over 27 countries throughout Europe, USA, Africa, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, India, Nepal and The Far East, not forgetting Sheffield, appearing at the city’s Motorpoint Arena on 10th May. You’re on tour with your new show, Force Majeure, where you visit 27 different countries. Why did you decide to do this? If you’re ambitious I suppose you’re trying to do better, rather than do less countries. If I announced the tour where I’m doing less countries than I’ve ever done before, everyone would be like, ‘Oh well, that’s not a terribly interesting show’. You can speak on television all the time with X Factor and stuff or you can be throwing televisions out of windows and getting headlines like that. I try to do it by doing gigs in French, touring, playing in more places in countries than people have done before and running marathons. I can do it in a slightly different way so it’s like a fun thing, it’s a positive thing at a time when maybe the country’s being rather negative, or given the financial situation and stuff, everyone’s being pulled back in and retrenching, and sort of disliking other countries, and I’m saying, ‘No, let’s go out and work in other countries and forge new places to play’. So I thought, yeah, go to Russia, go to play Berlin and Serbia and Istanbul and Kathmandu. It seemed like a fun and positive thing, and hopefully some other kids and young people in Britain will be going, ‘Oh that idiot’s doing it, well I’m going to do stuff like that as well’, so it just feels positive.

Where have you been so far? So far, we’ve been to Latvia, Estonia, Serbia, Croatia, Turkey, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, now in Holland, and we’ve got Switzerland to go and going to Belgium next and then it’s all going to be around Britain. There’s Kathmandu to come, which is Nepal, and next year all the states of America and Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Shanghai as well. Where are you most looking forward to performing in? Berlin was amazing, that was in English, and next time I go back there I’m going to do it in German, so that was kind of fantastic as we were playing in a place where Hitler had a box, and being able to stamp on his grave seemed like a good thing to do. With another German comedian who was also doing it in English, and two German people. So it was a mixture of Brits and German and people from all over Europe so that was exciting. Serbia was amazing, because they had that war, the Belgrade people were really happy to have someone coming from Britain in there and their command of English was fantastic, it was like playing London. Moscow’s going to be great, St Petersburg’s going to be great, Kathmandu’s going to be great. And then I’m coming back to Sheffield. Force Majeure is coming to Sheffield on 10th May – what can we expect? That’s back to where I was at college, and I’m going to do a late French gig as well, in Sheffield. What have you got planned for your show in Sheffield? It will be a trawling through my mind from human sacrifice to goat ghosts, to cats with guns to Lord of the Rings done with pipes and done with cigarettes; it’s a wild, surreal journey through my brain. How does it feel to be back in Sheffield again after so many years? I always like to come back to Sheffield. I was there for a short period of time doing my degree, which I then dropped out of, but then I hung round Sheffield and I got to know it and I have a great affection for Sheffield. I always like coming back, I make sure I come back and it’s just good to be there, it will never not be on the tour. How long has it been since you’ve been back? I was there about a year ago or two ago. I’m always coming through Sheffield. As part of my 43 marathons, I chose to do them when I was in Sheffield, so I’ve got a lot of history with Sheffield and it’s always good to get back there and play the Arena. Over your long comedy career you have had many opportunities (such as acting in movies, TV etc). Do you feel your performance style has changed over the years as a result of that? Yes I do actually. I think because I’ve been pushing to do dramatic roles such as ‘Valkyrie’ and the

‘Oceans’, and last Christmas I did it back in Britain and ‘Treasure Island’, so I think the drama work I’ve done has informed the comedy, I suppose in some ways the comedy has informed the drama, probably the other way round. But hopefully if you do some good work, which I feel I have done over the years, then you’re not actually allowed to go below the bar, so hopefully my dramatic work and my comedic work are constantly pushing themselves up. Performing around the world, doing films in America or Germany or wherever they’re filming - Treasure Island was in Dublin and Puerto Rico - and working with international casts, great actors, I mean you just want to do the best work you can. I also want to do the greatest comedy I can, because you don’t want to be sliding down, you want your career to be constantly bubbling up. As I was mentioning before, you want to play more places rather than be playing less places, because then it’s like, ‘Yeah, he used to do it but now not so’, so the bar is set high, and Force Majeure will be hopefully the best show that I’ve ever done. That’s what I’m trying to do, but we’re on course for giving a very good show. What sort of work do you like doing the most? Stand up, acting, writing? If I had to choose just one of them I would say that I’d just do filming, big films on location that is. But I don’t actually have to choose, so I’m not going to choose. The touring is beautiful but it’s all on me, like every night it’s all on me, whereas filming, they say, ‘Hey, you’ve got a day off today’, or ‘You’re only working in the morning’. In doing the filming, drama work, I have to work with other actors. You have to agree everything beforehand. It’s definitely great filming on location, it’s the most fun. ‘Treasure Island’, filming that in Dublin and filming that in Puerto Rico and now that they want to do another ‘Treasure Island’ as well, that’s just very exciting. Have you found any trouble in speaking English in your shows in the different countries? Have you found any points hard to get across, that they didn’t receive it as well? What I’ve done for 15 years, is I’ve tried to make the references quite universal. We talk about human sacrifices, that we used to do it 2000 years ago and why the hell did we do that, everyone can sort of plug into that and go, ‘Yeah, that was weird, what the hell were we doing there?’. It’s not a British thing, it’s more like a human being thing that we did across the planet in some bizarre way, so I try to lock into those things. I can talk about quite small things, I even make references about wrestling in the 70s and stuff which not necessarily everyone gets, but I’m very aware that I’m playing to a progressive audience, kind of open minded audience, they’re not mainstream. I don’t play the mainstream Britain I don’t think, but I don’t play the mainstream Serbia or the mainstream Russia or the mainstream Germany. It’s more the kind of Python liking, Fast Show liking, BBC2, Channel 4 kind of people, who’ve seen quite a lot of comedy and they think, ‘Oh yeah, this surreal, this is all twisted about silly’, intelligent and stupid at the same time, so that’s the audience. But as long as the references are quite universal it seems to work fine.

Works 57

www.works57.co.uk dammich@gmail.com

07812 835 178

There is only one word that comes to mind when you think of Works 57, and that word is design. Each and every aspect of this original and unique work space has been individually designed by ex-product designer and lecturer, Dave Mitchell. Since he bought the abandoned factory just over a year ago, the transformation the building has undergone has been unimaginable. And it is a sight to behold. From the outside it may look old, but the renovations inside are bang up to date! Exposed brick walls feature heavily, as do rustic style pieces juxtaposed by the overall modern furnishings of each quirky room. Each different from the rest, the office spaces serve to incorporate a cool vibe into the converted factory building. Not one to waste character when it’s handed to him, Dave has kept some of the original

graffiti, which once covered the walls of the derelict building completely, to be mounted as art within some of the units. Not that the spaces are lacking character; it’s clear to see that there has been a great amount of planning and careful design to achieve these fantastic offices. The space would very much suit designers or even architects, given its great open plan spaces and fascinating design aspects. The services within the units, workshops and office studios are also in keeping with the modernisation of the building with only the latest and fastest internet connection and massive data room on offer. As yet the space has attracted tenants who, within their skill sets were very much in need of these great facilities, particularly in terms of the huge data allowance and speedy net. Both Synopsis, a web design company, and Dave Brown, an app designer and programme inventor, have rented units recently which attend to all of their technological needs! A great deal of hard work and love has gone into reworking the entire building, but for

Dave the vision was always clear and he just could not resist the place. “I thought it looked a bit run down and a bit unloved, and then just when I’d decided I wasn’t going to do anything for a while, I saw this was up for sale!”, says Dave, who bought the building last year and has since devoted all of his time to developing it. The space offers a great work environment for a variety of small businesses. One of Works 57’s very first tenants, Matthew Hulley, has an appreciation for the office unit which runs a little deeper than pure aesthetics. “I like the old Sheffield industry feel because it is an old factory,” says Matthew, who runs Just Preserves; a business which manufactures and distributes a wide range of jams and chutneys across Sheffield and has been situated in the building for just over a month. Works 57 is situated in one of Sheffield’s creative hubs, just off Abbeydale Road near the antiques quarter, and Dave is keen to get design lead businesses into the building which will create a great networking space for some of the creative within the city. Aside from the sleek and individual design aspects of the units, every office comes well equipped with super-fast internet, perfect if you need to use a lot of data, and unit prices start from as little as £60 a week, which includes water; hardly a large sum to pay for such a stunning space in a great location!

fashion Seasons Clothing 20-22 Carver Street, Sheffield, S1 4FS 0114 275 5031 www.seasonsclothing.co.uk Creating an individual look can be difficult and sometimes high street shops just don’t cut it. We spoke to Fraser Rowlin, owner of Seasons, an independent fashion store in the heart of Sheffield. Have you always had a keen interest in fashion? I always wanted to own my own clothing shop. It’s even in my record of achievement from when I was a child so it goes way back. Your wife is your business partner, how does that work? It’s good because we both do different things, she’s good at more of the accounting side of things and making the barcodes, and I’m more visual and creative. I come in the ‘creative’ bracket, whether that means I can skive more I don’t know!

Marine The camouflage look remains timeless and especially prominent this season, with high street stores, boutiques and London’s fashion week showcasing it heavily. In moderation, the military/camo trend can grub up an outfit perfectly; think tailored cargo pants, field jackets, khaki rain coats or studded denim. Essentially a unisex trend, it has an affinity with men and worn properly can reflect a super strong image. Attention! Have a scan of the items below, they might just get you all fired up.

What is your key item this season? The Goodwood Sports and Racing Revival jacket by Belstaff. We’re very lucky to have it as they don’t have many accounts in the UK so we’re one of the few to stock this product. It comes with original racing badges so it’s quite a unique piece.

Fashionista Summer Trends ByMegan Sutton

I’ll admit, this article might be a little premature, but in the fashion world it’s perfectly acceptable to be stocked up on summer outfits while outdoor temperatures are still sub-zero. So I’m going to shut the curtains on this non-existent ‘spring’ and get all excited about summer fashion. A key trend on the catwalks of SS13 was futuristic fashion. Burberry featured metallic pieces on their runway, and the high street has followed suit. ASOS’ £22 metallic foil tshirt is a practical way to wear the trend; team it with some denim cut offs and a pair of sandals for a stylish summer look.

Sports Luxe The Olympics may have been and gone nine months ago, but the spirit of athleticism is still ripe in the air when it comes to fashion this month. Inspired by the recent influx of hipster trends, this season brings us luxury sweats, bomber jackets, loose fitted pants, leathers and silks. With a palette of lumo colours and 80s vibes, this is the perfect antidote to last season’s wintery wardrobe, and we can’t wait to get our new wardrobe up and running- make the treadmill your runway!

Another main trend for the summer is print- the bigger, the bolder, the better. Modern florals at Prada and colourful prints at Dolce and Gabbana have paved the way for high street collections. Topshop’s take on the summery trend includes their £54 ‘Tiger Lattice’ culotte and sun top set in a bright yellow hue. This outfit is perfect for the British summer as it can be worn on its own on a sunny day, or with tights and a jacket, should the heavens decide to open (which –let’s face it- is very likely). Summer is usually the time when us Brits grab our passports and sun cream and head to sunnier shores. But in 30 degree heat, being on trend can easily be over-looked… SS13 catwalks paid homage to 50s style, and an easy way to wear this trend on holiday comes in the form of a retro bikini set. Topshop’s £34 red check halter-neck top and high-waisted bottoms are a perfect way of channelling vintage style whilst on the beach or in the sea. Finish off the look with a pair of Cat Eye sunglasses - as seen on the runways of Dior- to add an extra pinch of old Hollywood glamour to your outfit. It’s never too early to start filling up your summer wardrobe. Be fashionably ready for the day the sun shows its face- if we all keep our fingers crossed it might just happen.

Top Tips Chunky statement accessories are the winning touch to any outfit inspired by this season’s look. Team a golden chain with a vibrant shirt or blouse, or a neon wrist watch to give a new waterproof sports jacket that needed flash.

Dolphins, tigers, a lake… are actually all fashion musts right now on the high street. Photographic prints are bold and colourful, making a change from the rustic tones of last season’s country life inspired autumn/winter collection. Chic Lifestyle Magazine | Issue 51

music Josh Kumra Good Things Come To Those Who Don’t Wait In an attempt to pitch his style firmly in between the two camps of R&B and pop, young singer/ songwriter, Josh Kumra, offers up his debut album, “Good Things Come To Those Who Don’t Wait”. It’s clear from the first album track, and incidentally the first single, “The Answer”, that Josh has been influenced by a variety of genres in his time. Smooth vocals overlay music styling which could be classed as chill out, whilst lyrics range from love to heartbreak. This is the album to listen to whilst lying with your love post-coitally in bed, or lying alone crying into your pillow after he leaves you high and dry. Favourites include track eight, “Lost Again”, a song which encompasses perfectly the feeling of being alone after a break-up. Soulful vocals confess, “I don’t remember how I got here, How I got lost again”, whilst you can almost hear the pain in the young man’s voice. This is unsurprising, given that many of Josh’s self-composed lyrics draw on personal events and experiences. With influences ranging from The Rolling Stones to Tracey Chapman, it’s really no wonder that Josh’s first album is as much about real substance as it is about style.

Joshua Radin Wax Wings A rare skill in an artist is the ability to really connect with their audience. The album’s title is an unsubtle note to the mythology of Icarus (you remember, the one who made wax wings and attempted to fly, only to have the wax melt in the sun’s heat and fall to his death), in which Joshua finds some personal metaphorical value. The album is a simple song selection of honest, folk-inspired music which searches to find a safe common ground between the listener and his exquisite voice.

Pintandwefall Be My Baby And now for something just a little bit weird: some girl grunge of Finnish and Swedish origins. You read right. “Pintandwefall” are a sweet combination of bands such as “Warpaint” and “Cat Power”, with just a hint of “Bjork” thrown in for good measure. After releasing their debut album back in 2007, the girls have seen some success across the earth, but are hoping that with their latest release entitled “Be My Baby”, they will finally be able to break firmly into the mainstream. To describe the girls’ look and music style as strange would be a drastic understatement; think hypnotic melodies, repetitive lyrics and random break downs (in both senses of the term). The stand out track, “When I Make A Sound”, is upbeat and yet haunting in nature, with lyrics describing a man watching the singer in the most sinister of settings. “You’re in my closet or under my bed” aren’t exactly the lines you expect someone to be happy about, yet the vocals are gleeful by nature until the chorus, in which the tone changes to something which you wouldn’t be surprised if you heard it at a cult meeting. Haunting and insane.

The simple and melodic guitar acts as the perfect frame for soft and honest vocals which proclaim lyrics detailing his own world in colour. Joshua has before noted that singing such personal and intimate lyrics, his signature style, feels a little like therapy. The album starts with the line, “I’m gonna wash the dust off my soul”, and we’re already hooked and ready to be his counsellors for the night! The stand out track on the album, though, has to be “Rainy Days”. As one of the more upbeat sounding tracks this is a pure love song with carefully crafted lyrics to touch anyone who hears it.

An Interview With

DON BROCO The last 18 months have been a whirlwind for Bedford quartet Don Broco. Having played festivals such as Download and Leeds and Reading, finished their first headline tour off the back of the overwhelming success of their debut album, “Priorities”, and supported a host of great acts including Enter Shikari, the band are most certainly in demand. Here at Chic Lifestyle, we caught up with bandmate Matt Donnelly to talk about the tour, high school and what’s next for Don Broco. First the question on everyone’s mind – what on earth is the name “Don Broco” all about? It was a really random process actually. We were working in a call centre at the time and looking for a good band name, but we’d always see the worst side of any name we came up with. We we’re looking through the dictionary for random words we liked and we came up with ‘Don Loco’. Unfortunately it turned out there was a rapper who already had that name, so then we came up with ‘Don Broco’ instead. You’ve just finished your first headline tour. That’s a pretty big deal! How did it go? It’s been awesome actually! The first leg was so good and then it was nice to have a couple of weeks off.[The band had to add an extra eight dates to their UK tour due to popular demand!] The second leg has been amazing too. You guys have been friends since high school where you formed your first band. What’s it like working so closely with mates? I guess we’re in that privileged position where we all know each other well enough so that we can just say things and be completely honest. It really helps us get the best creative results and means there’s a more relaxed atmosphere when we’re on tour together.

Cargo Bank Holiday Special: DJ Sneak/ Paul Woolford/ Hunee/ Matthew The Fez Club, Saturday 26th May, 4pm-7am

Most warehouse lovers wait with baited breath for the next Cargo event, and after a brief hiatus, Cargo will once again be gracing the Fez Club for a bank holiday special. They welcome the legendary DJ Sneak to Sheffield, with his American house music skills, plus a plethora of other international DJ talent from the likes of Paul Woolford, Hunee and Cargo super resident, Matthew Burton. This event also mixes it up with Fez Club undergoing a switch around, with a new layout to the room, added visuals, newly installed LED lighting rig, improved sound, a second room, outside area and day party. Full scale production is promised and it sounds like an epic event not to be missed. Double tickets can be purchased for this and Cargo’s August Bank Holiday event, featuring Kerri Chandler, or a single ticket just for the May event. Visit www.tickets. partyforthepeople.org.uk/events/32 to buy.

You’re known for your simple and upbeat lyrics. Where do you get your inspiration from? Rob [as in Rob Damiani, the band’s lead singer] pretty much exclusively writes the lyrics. We lock him in a dark room and don’t let him out till he’s finished! He cuts it a bit fine sometimes though! Are any of the lyrics based on your personal experience? Rob has always said he finds it hard to write pure fiction, so most of our songs are based on something that actually happened. Whether it’s something somebody we know went through, everyday things or something that happened to us. iTunes named Don Broco “Best New Rock Artist 2012”. How did that feel? That was awesome. When you read the list and see who else was on there, there were some huge names. It really put everything into context. Your music is a sort of hybrid of the pop and rock genre. How did that come about? When we were writing the album we put a lot of emphasis on vocals. We wanted it to sound infectious from a vocal point of view, so the pop element stems from the vocals. The rock element comes from me, Tom and Simon jamming. Who are your artistic and musical inspirations and why? That’s really hard to answer. We’ve all grown up listening to different music and our tastes have changed over the years too. Biffy Clyro is probably collectively our favourite band. It’s been great watching what they’ve done over the years. It really shows the sky’s the limit! After such an eventful past few months, what is on the cards next for you? We’re off to Germany with ‘We Are The Ocean’, which should be good. We have started writing some new songs too and we’ll be playing some festivals over the summer that we can’t talk about yet. There’s a lot on the horizon, but that’s the way we like it.

Interview | John Kumra

An Interview With

JOSH KUMRA I stole the idea from a friend of mine and decided to pass it off as my own

Chic Lifestyle speaks to the man behind that soulful voice about lyrics, love and Nora Jones. If “emotional” were a genre, Josh Kumra’s music would be the prime example of it. In his own words, the 21 year old singer-songwriter is a young man propelled into the music business by his emotive sound and earnest lyrics. To describe that sound is no easy feat. Josh himself struggles, flitting between the definitive sounding, “blues and soul fusion”, to a vaguer, “urban beats”, settling on the, as yet unknown, genre of, “emotional”. There is no doubting the sincerity of Josh’s lyrics; he speaks passionately and honestly about co-writing his début album, ‘Good Things Come To Those Who Don’t Wait’.

“I write a lot of love songs”. He pauses. “Well, more about heartbreak, really”. At such a young age, it sounds like he has already dealt with his fair share of heartache, but he’s not ready to talk about that just yet. In answer to the question of whether the lyrics are based on his personal experience or a particular ex, Josh falters, stuttering over an unconvincing. “No”, then a “Yes”, and finally, a “Maybe”. That was awkward. Delving any deeper into that subject could be a potential minefield, so I attempt to move the interview swiftly on, however this man has love on his mind. “I’d like to collaborate with Nora Jones. She has a beautiful voice and is beautiful in her own right too. It might be a good way to get in there”! It seems there is just no stopping this Casanova in his quest; no wonder he writes such heartfelt lyrics. Having recently appeared on ‘Later with Jools Holland’ alongside Wretch 32, due their a collaborative number one single, ‘Don’t Go’, Josh has already completed one of his life goals. “It’s funny, because I was watching the show about a year before going on it and I said to my dad, ‘That’s what I want to do’”. The singer laughs to himself. “I guess I’m going to have to set some new life goals now!” Shortly after his chart success with Wretch 32, Josh bagged a solo deal with RCA, which has meant that for the past few months he has been touring endlessly acting as the support act for many a wellknown face, including Lianne La Havas. “I’ve toured more than I ever thought I would in my lifetime”, he gushes. It’s not only on main stages of

22

Chic Lifestyle Magazine | Issue 51

arenas that he’s been playing either - Josh has also been travelling the country playing intimate gigs to lucky fans in their own homes. “I stole the idea from a friend of mine and decided to pass it off as my own”, he admits, with a hint of humour in his voice. The private gigs were arranged via his Facebook fan page and attracted a lot of attention from new and old fans. “When you play a big gig, it’s hard to tell whether people like your music, but when you’re playing to, say, nine people, you can easily tell if they like your songs.” Luckily for Josh, he was given a warm reception from all of the fans’ houses, and they aren’t the only ones to enjoy his style. Josh has been likened to a young Ray LaMontagne, a compliment he is overwhelmed by. “I’m nowhere near as good”, he interjects modestly, though he admits that the comparison has been drawn between the two time and time again. From playing to nine people in a living room to 8,000 in a stadium, Josh supported New Republic in April on their vastly popular European Tour. The thought must have been terrifying in itself, but a confident Josh would never let that show. When asked if he was nervous, he simply replies, “No, that’s what I live for”. And there you have it; a confident, soulful, hopeless romantic. What more can a girl ask for? Josh Kumra’s début album, ‘Good Things Come To Those Who Don’t Wait’ and his single, ‘The Answer’, is out now.

film There’s a popcorn bucket full of cinematic treats to get you running down to the flicks this month. We’ve reviewed some of the best so get your text on to Orange Wednesdays now!

DVD Release The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Director: Peter Jackson Thankfully released in the format of 24 frames per second, unlike the rather troubled experiment of 48 frames per second that was part of its theatrical release, the first part of Peter Jackson’s prelude to The Lord Of The Rings, based on the Tolkien book, The Hobbit, is a lengthy and wandering piece that does fall victim a little to Jackson’s over-reaching ambitions (namely adapting a fairly short novel into three films, supposedly near three hours apiece) but for all that it drags, its emphasis on character and playfulness does match, even surpass, Jackson’s Lord Of The Rings work.

one to watch

Spring Breakers Director – Harmony Korine The story of how four young women go down to Florida for Spring Break and instead head down a road of violence and organised crime, Spring Breakers is a neon-blurred shock to the system. Spring Breakers is also the mainstream break from cult filmmaker Harmony Korine. Its intense mix of girls and guns has such an impact that the film is difficult to get to grips with in the early scenes, but with a great lead in James Franco (and a rather strong turn from Selena Gomez, making her way

from teen-stardom to more mature work). Given the subject matter, meshing together both the commentary on gang culture and a leering eye for both sexuality and violence, the ultimate message comes off a little uneven. Despite the film’s rather extreme approach, its intriguing premise, strong performances and moments of odd originality still helps make Spring Breakers an enjoyable film.

The Place Beyond The Pines Director – Derek Cianfrance

Oblivion Director – Joseph Kosinski

Dark Skies Director – Scott Stewart

Built around a central confrontation between the two leads, a former stunt motorcyclist played by Ryan Gosling and a cop played by Bradley Cooper, The Place Beyond The Pines takes a multi-generational epic (the film’s plot has received some comparisons with The Godfather trilogy) and condenses the story into a two hour film with remarkable ease.

Tom Cruise plays Jack; a man who maintains drones on the surface of Earth, sixty years after a series of natural disasters and a nuclear war caused by an alien invasion have rendered almost all of Earth uninhabitable. Confused by strange dreams about a woman (Olga Kurylenko), Jack is even further perplexed when he finds her in suspended animation.

An everyday suburban American family are the victims of alien aggression in this science-fiction horror film. ‘Dark Skies’ is a few things, but one thing it isn’t is original. It’s got some interesting comparisons with Steven Spielberg’s aborted dark sequel to ‘Close Encounters Of The Third Kind’ 1977 known as ‘Night Skies’ which became the duel-basis for ‘E.T: The ExtraTerrestrial’ 1982 and ‘Poltergeist’ 1982.

Both Gosling and Cooper deliver strong, but subtle performances as characters that couldn’t, in many ways, be more different.

From the director of TRON: Legacy (2012) Joseph Kosinski (and based on an unpublished graphic novel of his own creation), Oblivion owes an obvious debt to films such as Aliens (1986) and 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). The film also keeps the smooth silver and blue colour tones of Kosinski’s TRON (1982) sequel, but slowly unravels into some strange, but rewarding, territory until well into the film.

Gosling being tough, impulsive and with little regard for the law; Cooper being affluent, morally-driven and a police officer. A story of guilt, corruption and paternity with some remarkable chase sequences contrasted with quiet, introspective, character-driven drama.

The suburban setting and the emphasis on family life also pushes the Spielberg comparisons (as does the July 4th setting, familiar to anyone who knows ‘Jaws’ 1975.) ‘Dark Skies’ also throws elements from ‘The Birds’ 1963, ‘The Exorcist’ 1973 and ‘The Shining’ 1980 to produce something that is flawed, but not terrible. There are a few good shocks to be had, the performances are strong and the storyline is involving, but there’s nothing here that hasn’t really been seen before. Chic Lifestyle Magazine | Issue 51

www.musicinthegardens.co.uk You need not go far to start off your festival summer, it can start right here on your very own doorstep (well, almost). Music in the Gardens is Sheffield’s very own mini-fest held annually in the Botanical Gardens. Picture yourself relaxing in the scenic setting, munching on a delicious picnic whilst watching some fantastic bands, topped off with a stunning fireworks display. The Jam will be headlining the event with British rock legend Bruce Foxton (of The Jam and Stiff Little Fingers) taking to the stage once again and he’s still got it! The band members are known for their extremely lively performances and on stage antics, so you can expect a lot of energy! Sheffield’s own BADGE will also be performing at the event. The band is a side project for musicians Nick Atkinson and Kat Eaton, who usually perform in their other band Felix, but use the name BADGE to fulfil their need to play covers with a twist! Folk lovers will be pleased to know that this year will see Bellowhead take to the stage. The folk super-group are festival favourites and with their four albums’ worth of material to fill up their set, you will not be disappointed. Payroll Union will be bringing the rockabilly southern gothic vibes, with their blend of unique and original music. The band formed just four years ago and has already managed to fast gain a reputation as one of the best festival bands around. Omar Puente’s Sextet is returning after his sell out show in 2010, with music to suit every taste. Montuno’s Latin soul and funk sound should be enough to get you up dancing whilst the festival is finished off with a performance by the Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra. Proceeds from the event will go to greatly deserving Sheffield charities!

cooking; the easiest way to describe it is a barbeque in a box, because it’s just charcoal, there’s no gas or anything but it’s all enclosed like an oven, as well as being a grill. It runs at about 1000°F, so it’s really hot.

From the Seared Black Pearl Scallops to the 16oz Rib-eye of Scotch Beef of the Bone, the menu at the stunning Fahrenheit Bar & Grill, tucked away within Genting Club, is something special. We popped down to meet the man behind the flavours, Head Chef, Dane Goddard.

What’s your favourite dish on the menu? The steaks are obviously a favourite because of the way they’re cooked, they’re 35 day old steaks as well, so they are really good quality.

How long have you been a chef for? 7 years.

What does your average day consist of? I typically start at about 3pm, and then just prepping, and the afternoon service starts at about 5, until 11pm.

How did you get into a career in the restaurant industry? I studied at college to start off with, did three years for my NVQ Level 1, 2 and 3, and from there I worked in several places, but I’d worked with the Regional Manager of Genting previously somewhere else. Have your created the menu yourself? There’s four Fahrenheit restaurants so we do it between us, the four head chefs. What sort of menu have you created at Fahrenheit? It’s a cross between grill and a la carte, we’ve based it on the Josper grill because I believe we’ve got the only one in Sheffield. It’s just a unique way of

The Shakespeare

THE WHISKY FILES www.shakespeares-sheffield.co.uk Chris Bamford and Robin Baker took us through some of their favourite tipples. Blanton’s Gold Edition The first whiskey this month is quite a treat. Dubbed by Chris as the nicest bourbon he’s ever tasted, this one has to be something special! Blanton’s Gold Edition is a single cask bourbon at a whopping 51.5% abv (the strength varies from cask to cask due to it being a single cask malt). Bourbon varies from Scotch in that it’s generally sweeter in flavour and often has notes of vanilla and honey. It is made using 51% or more corn and often a high proportion of rye, matured in charred new oak barrels for a minimum of two years. An interesting fact is that, despite poplar belief, Jack Daniels is not actually a bourbon, as it comes from Tennessee and bourbons come from Kentucky. Unlike Jack Daniels, the Blanton’s is a very smooth drink and goes for £3.80 for a single.

CHIC

RECCOMMENDS Powers The second selection is a pure pot still whiskey. Pure pot still whiskies are a traditional style of Irish whiskey and are purportedly some of the most drinkable whiskies on the market. We tried the Powers, made at the Middleton distillery near Cork, where Jameson is also made. The complex drink is made using both malted and unmalted barley; malting involves drying and cooking and the unmalted barley give the final product an overall smoother taste. Powers has been released fairly recently and is 12 years old, coming in at 46% abv. You can try it for yourself at Shakespeare’s for just £3.20 a single!

Hazelburn The third and final selection this month, Hazelburn 12 Year Old, has a connection to Paul McCartney that you wouldn’t expect. It is distilled in the Springbank distillery in Cambletown, which is at the end of the Mull of Kintyre, made famous by the Wings song. Unfortunately, the connection ends there, and we can in no way confirm that the drink has ever touched Paul’s lips, though if he is a man of any taste at all, it most certainly should have! The none coloured whiskey (which the experts tell us is so en vogue) is triple distilled meaning it has a smoother flavour, and is around 70% abv before it’s watered down to a safer 46% abv, at £3.80 a pop.

Pesto

57 Abbeydale Road South, Sheffield, S7 2QQ 0114 236 1451 www.pestorestaurants.co.uk Pesto doesn’t follow the usual restaurant premise. Instead, it is situated within the Waggon and Horses pub, after a £350,000 joint investment with Spirit Pub Company, and the pub has undergone a complete refurbishment to house the ninth Pesto in the country. The Waggon and Horses is in a great setting, on Abbeydale Road South next to Millhouses Park; a beautiful stone built pub, originally a pre-19th Century farmhouse. The interior still retains the pub feel, with dark wood and heavy walls, yet is stylish and spacious. Pesto also has a unique dining concept called Carta di Piattini, which is similar to tapas with small, individual dishes of Italian food. The menu is split into sections: Pane (bread), Bruschetta, Generale (everything which doesn’t fit into another section!), Pesce e frutti di mare (fish and seafood), Insalata (salad), Pizzette (pizzas), Carne (meat) and Pasta e riso (pasta and rice). Each dish priced at £1.95-£4.50, and it’s recommended that one person should find two to three dishes filling. Alternatively, there’s the lunch menu, where three dishes are £7.95 from a choice of 15. I opted for a choice from the main menu. With nearly 50 different dishes to choose from, and with Italian cuisine being my favourite, the decision was a tricky one. Eventually I went for Arancini, Gnocchi con Pesto and Cannelloni Ricotta e Spinaci. Arancini, or risotto balls, are one of my favourite treats, and Pesto’s version didn’t disappoint. Deep fried balls of saffron risotto rice stuffed with mozzarella, they were crisp on the outside, with soft risotto inside and a generous amount of gooey mozzarella inside. The gnocchi dish, basilico and parmigiano gnocchi with fresh basil pesto and melted fresh parmesan, was prepared to perfection – I’ve attempted to cook gnocchi myself which resulted in a sloppy mess – and was soft yet firm. Delicately flavoured with pesto, the sauce wasn’t overpowering. The cannelloni filling was a classic – spinach and ricotta. I was a little disappointed with the pasta, as cannelloni should be rolled up tight yet the pasta sheets were a bit loose, however the taste was great and filled with spinach leaves, topped with a tomato sauce and oodles of cheese. I followed this with a fresh and refreshing Torta al limone – a tangy, homemade lemon mousse, made with fresh cream and lemons, and served on a soft biscuit base. Refreshing and delicious, this petite treat was the perfect end to the meal. The menu definitely sticks to well-loved classic Italian dishes that are bound to go down well. The idea of Piattini is amazing – I love how with tapas you can try lots of different dishes, and offering this with Italian food is a great idea. You certainly don’t go hungry – the dishes are slightly bigger than traditional tapas and each about the size of a starter. The service was attentive and friendly and I can’t wait to return to try more dishes!

Summer Barbecue Tips with The Beauchief’s Jack Baker www.thebeauchief.com t: @BeauchiefSheff

Optimism is the name of the game with our weather – but hopefully, warmer days are upon us. And for us Brits that means it’s time to get the barbecue out. We spoke to Jack Baker, head chef at Jack Baker’s Great Northern Brasserie at The Beauchief, launching on May 1st, to get his summer barbecue tips. “I love variety on a barbecue. You can’t beat seafood, great cuts of meat and homemade burgers all complemented by fresh salads and breads. My main tip for a successful barbecue is preparation! There’s so much you can do the day before that will make your food taste better and ensure you get more time to spend with friends and family rather than slaving over hot coals. “24-hour marinades are one of the easiest, most effective methods of prep. Meat like ribs and chicken will really benefit from having a longer time to soak up all the flavours and ingredients in your marinade of choice. Making a marinade from scratch is always preferable to going for shop-bought; it just tastes so much better. “My favourite is a really simple combination for chicken thighs or drumsticks: chop garlic and sage and season it with sea salt and cracked black pepper. Pull back the skin on the chicken and rub the mixture into the flesh, then pull the skin back over to seal in the flavour. Drizzle olive oil and lemon juice over the top, place the chicken in a covered dish or Ziploc bag and let it marinade overnight in the fridge. Simple but effective. “I’m looking forward to putting on some great barbecues at The Beauchief this summer. You can follow us on Twitter @BeauchiefSheff or check out our website at www.thebeauchief.com to find out dates as soon as they’re announced”. Happy barbecuing!

Club 355

The way we’re going to keep people coming back is by selling locally produced homemade goods. We make homemade cakes, flans and pastas, puff pastry savouries.

On a long road between the hilly lands of Sheffield, through a red door lies something a bit special: 355 Club. This traditional English café has been at 355 Abbeydale Road for a year and a half now and is more than meets the eye; supplying not only a spectacular range of homemade delicacies, but also a selection of halal food and, if you happen to step in between the hours of 12 and 7, Friday to Sunday, you will be able to sample their Caribbean food menu.

What dishes do you offer on your general menu?

355 Abbeydale Road Sheffield, S7 1FS

The menu includes dishes such as White Cod in White Caribbean sauce, Mackerel Curry and Rice and Peas. We spoke to owner Paul Simmonds about his extremely varied English Café. Tell us about the name?

The ethos of it being a club is that it’s something we want people to join and continue coming back to.

b u l

Our number one sandwich at the moment is a Spicy Mexican Chicken with Mature Cheddar Cheese Melt. It has been since we opened because it’s such a winner. We also do other dishes like your hot roast pork, homemade lasagne and soups.

What makes you different?

The thing about us is that we like to cook and we like to home cook also. It’s the taste and quality of the product that gets our customers returning. We use the best quality, locally sourced products we can find.

What sort of drinks do you offer?

Our coffee’s all organic and we do a lot of teas, as well as wide range of herbal teas.

Do you cook?

I love to cook. I cook for here, there’s nothing I don’t do. We love doing it at home, so now we’re trying to do it here. We bake our cakes fresh every day. I’ve got a passion for cooking and for me that’s enough!

How much do dishes cost?

Well one of our dishes, the homemade lasagne, is only £2.80 with a salad. What a bargain! And if that’s not good enough for you, there’s 10% off with NUS cards.

8 East Parade, S1 2EP 0114 272 13 77 www.voltsalon.co.uk As innovators in the world of hairdressing, owners of the recently opened Volt Salon, Helen Porter and Jennie Copley, took their courage and decided to strike out on their own with the birth of their stunning salon. A vision in hot pink, shiny slate grey and glossy black, the interior of Volt is old meets new, with the exposed brickwork of the former cathedral bookshop hitting the modern, warehouse-esque design concept. Such creativity is inevitably mirrored in the team’s focus on style and glossy locks; a mantra of ‘illuminate your individuality’. It seems fit then, that Volt should have an opening event to fit their own advice. With tunes spun by DJ Lil Ant, a regular at Manchester’s Velvet club, superb cocktails were expertly mixed and over 100 people were catered to. The party vibes were such that passers-by mistook the salon for being a bar! It was the perfect opening for a salon which looks to redesign the salon experience. With party-meets-hair proving to be such a success, Volt now hosts ‘Fizz Fridays’ every week, offering clients a fizzy glass of bubbly or choice from a tempting selection of treats from wine to Baileys, all whilst you ease yourself back into the styling chair and let the pros work their glossy magic upon your locks, just in time for the weekend. Don’t worry that such a service will delve a little too deep into your pocket, however. Volt offers a fantastic range of special deals, including two-forone Tuesdays, when you’d be silly not to bring your bezzie along for a restyle too, and 20 per cent off for first-time Volt clients. New clients to their colouring service receive a whopping 50 per cent off their cut and finish when booking a full price colour, with an extra treat of a complementary Sebastian treatment! Simply visit the Volt website and print off a copy of the vouchers. If you want to get the Volt experience for yourself, ring them on 0114 2721 377. BEAUTY sixties girl What’s on trend for this year’s spring/ summer? High end beauty companies including Vogue and Elle are infatuated by the “Sixties Girl” for 2013, a look which is easily created yet cannot be ignored. The look consists of light but visible eyeliner, nude lips and bold eyebrows to complete the look. The neutrality of the look is perfect for the upcoming season, embracing colour when the sun is shining.

This month we’ve indulged the stunning Japanese retreat that is City Head Spa, lushed up our lashes at Wigs and Warpaint and prepped our beauty bags ready for the long anticipated shimmer of sunshine.

Flawless Skin To get that clear and flawless look, Dainty Doll is the answer, guaranteed to cover all blemishes and marks. Dainty Doll is a fast growing brand and has been going from strength to strength since its launch in 2007 by Girls Aloud singer Nicola Roberts. The concealer is the perfect tool as an under layer on the face before applying foundation, light and effective. £14.50, Debenhams/ Boots www daintydoll.com

Solid Foundation MAC never fails to disappoint, with their foundation coming out on top. The Studio Fix Fluid is easily applicable to the face, leaving a healthy and noticeable glow. With almost 40 shades to choose from and makeup artists happy to help, you won’t leave empty handed. £20.50, MAC @ Debenhams, Meadowhall www.maccosmetics.co.uk

Cheeky to Cheek Whilst some of us are blessed with natural high and obvious cheekbones, others of us have to apply blush to make them noticeable. Either way, Benefit is the answer. CORALista is able to compliment any skin tone and colour. Applying a little bit to the top of the cheeks will create a subtle outline of the bone, ideal for our Sixties Girl look. To create a more dramatic effect, applying more would look great too. £23.50, Benefit @ Boots, Meadowhall www.benefitcosmetics.co.uk

Get Lippy Kate Moss is running the Lipstick scene for Rimmel, with her new spring collection consisting of natural but pretty colours; perfect shades for the sun. Shade 16 from the Spring Collection is a must have. A nude base with a hint of pink; it subtly draws attention to the right areas, without stealing the limelight from the eyebrows.

Tammy Peat, a managing therapist for both body and beauty, at Body and Face Works on Ecclesall Road, answered some of our burning beauty questions. Her expert advice not only help us to recreate our sixties girl look but puts an end to our beauty blunders and mishaps. Which make up brand has the best eyebrow pencil? How important are eyebrow shapes to the face? There are lots of great eyebrow products on the market. My favourites are MAC Eyebrow twist up pencil, but equally I love Christian Eyebrows, which is a powder product with stencils. The stencils are quite difficult to use alone due to getting the placement of each eyebrow correct, as well as the shape even, equal and symmetrical. Often I will apply Christian powder over MAC to seal it and make it last longer. The shape of the eyebrow is hugely important as this dictates the harmony of the face. There have been many fashions in eyebrow shapes, from the early 1920s, where eyebrows were very thin and arched, a la Edith Piaf to the Brooke Shields heavy, almost unruly brows. Many women have either over plucked their eyebrows or have tadpole shaped eyebrows, perhaps due to being unskilled at shaping them. It is always best to get them shaped professionally.

MAC’s eyebrow pencil is an accurate definer, helping to get the eyebrow shape you really want. Self-sharpening, it’s easy to use with a variety of shades to choose from, ensuring your eyebrows look as natural, or as bold, as possible.

What is the best way to ensure your lipstick stays on throughout the day? Firstly by ensuring that the lips are smooth and in good condition. A good way to ensure this is to exfoliate them by using a little moisturiser and using an old tooth brush to lightly polish them. Use a lip liner of a similar shade to the lipstick you are going to wear and draw a line which follows the natural line of your lips and then fill the lips in with the pencil. Apply a fine film of the lipstick with a lipstick brush, blot with a tissue (pop a tissue between the lips and blot the lips onto this). Apply a fine film of translucent powder to the blotted lipstick with a powder puff and sweep away any excess with a fan brush. Reapply lipstick with a lip brush.

EXPERT TIPS

Chic Lifestyle Magazine | Issue 51

Make-up should be removed from around the eyes using the appropriate products and by not pulling the skin around the eyes. The face should be cleansed using a good cleanser that is not going to strip the face of its natural oils. The cleanser should be worked well into the skin, paying attention around the nose, chin, neck and hair line, and then washed off by using a cloth and water. The face should then be patted dry and the appropriate night creams, serums and eye creams applied, as it is whilst we sleep and rest that the creams have the optimum situation to penetrate into the skin and help to moisturise and nourish the skin. www.bodyandfaceworks.co.uk

Wigs and Warpaint 11 West One Plaza, Fitzwilliam Street, Sheffield, S1 4JB 0114 270 0336 www.wigsandwarpaint.com A set of flirty lashes is the ultimate antidote to a tired face and drab appearance. Whether you’re more of a fluttering beauty or a totes glam TOWIE inspired stunner, there’s a lash for everyone. The most popular lash extension is the strip lash; quickly glued on at home for instant impact, peeling off at the end of the night. A more permanent option is semi-permanent lash extensions, painstakingly, individually glued on in salon for over an hour and lasting for a few weeks. However, Let’s Go Lashes offer a whole new world of eyelashes, with three options to suit all styles, pockets and available time! A self-confessed lash addict myself, of course I was dying to try this out. Luckily, Wigs and Warpaint are already hot on the tail of Let’s Go Lashes. Their beauty therapist, Maria Dallagiovanna, is always looking for new treatments to add to the salon’s already impressive list of treats on offer, so I popped down to find out more.

The Let’s Go Lashes are applied on a chair in the middle of the busy salon as it’s an express service. Firstly, I removed my mascara was to help the lashes stick, then Maria started to apply the lashes. It’s an extremely quick and drama-free procedure; Maria simply stuck small clusters of lashes to the top of my upper eyelashes, with the glue setting almost immediately, applying longer lashes in the middle of the eye then gradually shortening to the edges, mimicking natural growth and giving a wide eye effect. Once each eye was complete, Maria applied a sealant to keep the lashes in place. Having tried many different lash enhancements before, I can safely say that these are the best lashes I’ve ever had! Long and luscious with oodles of volume, the clusters add much more volume than individual lashes I’ve had applied in the past. The lashes should be professionally removed after one week, although will stay on for longer if you decide to keep them on. Care of the lashes is pretty simple – don’t use waterproof mascara (although I’ve not needed to use any mascara at all – my morning makeup routine is transformed), don’t get them wet for the first two hours, avoid steam and swimming for the first two days and remove make up carefully with oil-free products.

The beauty of Let’s Go Lashes is that they cater for everyone. The range consists of 5 Minute Lashes (strip lashes, applied professionally or by yourself, lasting for a day/ night), 10 Minute Lashes (cluster lashes, lasting up to a week) and 20 Minute Lashes (express individual lashes, lasting up to two weeks). As far as lashes are concerned, I believe big is best, so Maria recommended I go for the 20 Minute Lashes, as they give a fuller look.

Something which has taken the salon by storm, however, is HD Brows, a revolutionary seven step treatment giving you stunning brows. Whether your natural brows are in need of a good tidy, or lacking a little in the bushiness department, the HD Brows treatment can solve all brow problems. Giving you brows to suit your face, style, age and personal preference, no HD Brow is the same, using the therapist’s talent to create beautiful brows just for you. Visit www.hdbrows.com for more information and www.wigsandwarpaint.com for details on how to book.

A swift, inexpensive (the cluster lashes are just £20) and peeper transforming product, I can’t recommend Let’s Go Lashes enough. The Wigs and Warpaint Beauty department is going from strength to strength, after a relaunch headed by therapist Maria Dallagiovanna. The salon now offers a range of treatments, including eyebrow tinting, waxing and threading, eyelash perming and extensions, nail treatments with acrylic, Minx and Shellac, Fake Bake spray tans and intimate waxing for ladies and gents.

Hair | Review

HAIR City Head Spa Unit 6, The Plaza, West One, Fitzwilliam Street, Sheffield, S1 4JB 0114 272 4772 www.cityheadspa.com City Head Spa is not just your average hair salon. It’s the first and only Japanese Head Spa in Europe. What is a Head Spa, I hear you ask? It’s a relaxing, stress relieving treatment, to soothe, calm, relieve tension, relax and treat both hair and scalp. Instead of the wash being just a brief shampoo, much more emphasis is placed on this like in Japan, where head spas are the norm! Hairdressing in Japan is regarded with the same respect as that as Law, with stylists training for five to six years to learn their trade. We were more than tempted to try it out!

The Salon

City Head Spa is part funded by Habia Japan, a training school in Japan, and Sheffield College. The salon is run by fully trained stylists however, yet offers a unique exchange program, with students coming over to Sheffield to study hairdressing, and vice versa. Before opening, the stylists underwent a week of intensive training by Japanese stylists with interpreters. City Head Spa uses Cotasera products, a Japanese company which has not been launched in the UK. The Head Spa is a cleansing ritual, proven to work after examining hair through a microscope – even after showering that morning hair looks dirty under a microscope, but after the ritual the hair and scalp is clean.

Head Spa

After a brief consultation, each visitor to the salon is offered a Head Spa. A 20 minute Head Spa is £12, or for 40 minutes it’s £20 – a complete steal as in Japan this goes for around £70! I was taken to the Head Spa area, a retreat hidden away from the business of the main salon at the back, behind Japanese wooden slats. Sitting on the chair, I was given a furry hot water bottle and draped in a furry blanket, keeping me toasty warm throughout the treatment! The chair reclined back, with my head resting comfortably in the sink. The stylist applied shampoo and conditioners, then massaged each in with a relaxing head massage, easing my tensions away. The Head Spa does what it says it should – relaxes and calms, and putting the emphasis on the wash is definitely something special.

Styling

My stylist, Shannon McDonagh, blowdryed my hair straight with a round brush, using Sebastian Volupt volumising spray, Trilliant thermal protection spray and Wella Oil to add some luscious moisture in to my locks. She then backcombed and styled my hair up into a gorgeous updo, taking inspiration from Audrey Hepburn’s sophisticated style. The result was a sleek, perfectly executed, chic shape, shiny and packed with volume.

Chic Treat

With every colour package, clients are spoiled with a free Bubble Tea from the nearby LOL Bubble Tea. I was treated to one however, and went for the Mango Smoothie with a topping of Strawberry Popping Boba. Juicy and refreshing, the smoothie tasted fantastic in the sunshine, with the unique boba bals popping in the mouth to give a blast of strawberry juice.

555 Attercliffe Road, Sheffield, S9 3RA 0114 261 8000 The ‘Wake Up Beautiful Company’, Illusionz Beauty Salon in Attercliffe offers a wide and varied beauty and hair treatments to its clients – body treatments, facial treatments, bridal hair and make-up and tooth whitening, and has recently taken delivery of an amazing new alternative to liposuction – 3D-lipo. As well as a full range of beauty services ranging from manicures to waxing, the salon is one of the top salons in the area for state of the art cosmetic procedures, including semi-permanent make up for brows, eyes and lips, anti-ageing Botox and fillers, skin needling to approve the appearance of skin, Care Quality Commission registered laser treatment, slimming and toning aids and Beyond WhiteSpa System teeth whitening. Alongside Illusionz’ existing fantastic equipment, iLipo (the latest in laser lipolysis), Applisonix (long term hair removal) and Meso-Btox (the ‘no needle’ facial), their latest addition, 3D-lipo is one of the most exciting machines to break onto the bodysculpting market, and Sheffield is very lucky to have one in their midst. 3D-lipo is one of the most advanced machines of its type in the beauty and aesthetic industry and offers a powerful new dimension in the non-surgical fat removal, treatment of cellulite and skin tightening for both face and body. Its new 3-dimensional approach to the problem ensures that nothing

else offers such a complete and effective solution, offering clients a true alternative to liposuction. You may be thinking that something sounding as cutting edge and effective as 3D-lipo is only something to dream about, available only for deep pockets on Harley Street. However, with the treatment now being available at Illusionz Beauty Salon in Attercliffe, your dream body something of a much more achievable reality. 3D-lipo is a powerful three dimensional alternative to liposuction, but unlike most Lipo devices, requires no exercise post treatment. The 3D brand is a culmination of 20 years’ worth of experience developing result driven devices, winning bronze award at the recent Medical Aesthetic Awards for Equipment Brand of the Year 2012/13.Utilising the latest generation technology called Ultrasound Cavitation combined with Cryolipolysis (fat freezing), which is widely recognised as one of the most effective cellulite reduction and localised fat loss techniques available, 3D-lipo is one of the most advanced machines of its type. It offers a powerful new dimension in nonsurgical fat removal, treatment of cellulite and skin tightening for both face and body. The treatment combines the benefits of 3D-lipo with the addition of Cyro and 3D Dermology in one affordable system, transforming the client’s body with an incredibly advanced machine. Fractional Focus RF energy penetrates the skin layers to selectively heat the skin tissue and the extra cellular matrix, where the collagen fibres are embedded. Smoother, healthier and younger

looking skin is the result. The Fractional Focus RF technology is also used to increase metabolism and release of liquid fat from fat cells, restoring skin closer to its original form and reducing or eliminating cellulite appearance. Another technique used in the 3D-lipo process is Lipo Cavitation. Cavitation is a natural phenomenon based on low frequency ultrasound, which is used to pressurise fat cell membranes and disintegrate it into a liquid state, resulting in natural fat loss. The system also includes Cyrolipolysis (fat freezing), which uses the unique combination of electro and cyro therapy to naturally kill 20-40% of the fat cells in the treated area, which dissolve over the course of several months. Additionally, 3D Dermology is utilised, targeting cellulite reduction with vacuum skin rolling. With just one treatment of Cyro therapy, clients can lose 20-40% of fat cells in the treated area. Illusionz is offering a one-off treatment for just £400, plus Cavitation, Focus Fractional Radio Frequency and 3D Dermology treatments for just £80 each. A course of treatments is available at a discounted price, plus package deals are available – give the salon a call for more details. Illusionz is the only salon to offer 3D-lipo in South Yorkshire and it has already has some great success stories with one client losing five and a quarter inches from her legs after her first session. Illusionz owner, Vinisha Ali, has seen fantastic results following the treatment herself on her stomach and legs. To date she has lost a total of eight inches from her stomach and five and a half inches from her legs, which truly is astonishing! The salon also specialises in Botox and fillers and is one of the leading salons when it comes to face and body rejuvenation. The salon works with a Doctor, who conducts a face to face consultation before performing any treatments. Visit www.3d-lipo.com to find out more about the treatment, and www.illusionzsalon.co.uk for a full list of services.

Mosborough Music Festival

www.mosbourghmusicfestival.co.uk The annual Mosborough Music Festival is back for 2013 with a huge host of great bands to get you in the festival mood right here in sunny (we hope) Sheffield. Headlining the tour are Sheffield’s very own Reverend and the Makers, with Jon McClure returning to the stage once again with his original ensemble. Given his reputation for being something of an erratic character, you might expect anything from poetry to spontaneous dancing within their performance. Festival veteran Neville Staple will also be appearing, this time without his ever touring band The Specials, though his solo performances are purportedly extremely lively. Lyrical genius Paul Heaton, of both The Beautiful South and The Housemartins, will be performing an array of tracks spanning his 20 years plus musical career. With a total of 26 bands playing across two stages, the event is fantastic value for money. The festival is taking place on the Old Westfield School site on Saturday 22nd June and Sunday 23rd June. Tickets cost £25 per day or £45 for the whole weekend plus £20 camping. For tickets visit www.mosboroughmusicfestival.co.uk or call the Sheffield Arena Ticket Line on 0114 256 5656.

Fake Festivals

www.fakefestivals.co.uk The festival for people who don’t ordinarily go to festivals! Festival season is great, but the high cost of both tickets and travel mean seeing your favourite bands is by no means a cheap excursion. For people who are looking for that live festival atmosphere, without the financial or travel drawbacks, there is another option: Fake Festivals. This unique touring festival offers the chance to see your favourite bands and artists (almost) in Hillsborough Park, Sheffield. Headlining this year’s event is the most sought after Coldplay tribute band, Coldplace. To ensure you think you’re seeing double or perhaps Chris Martin’s twin, the band tirelessly watch footage of the real deal and aim to mimic everything from mannerisms to the shoelaces the band members wear, so that their performance is the exact likeness of the band itself. “We’ve got a great set list with all the anthems for this year’s Fake Festivals tour and we’re ready to hit Sheffield”, says lead singer of Coldplace, Shane Crofts (Chris Martin). Other acts this year include Kings of Lion (a tribute to Kings of Leon) and Total Stone Roses (a tribute to The Stone Roses), plus five local bands which will be supporting. Sheffield Fake Festival will be taking place on June 22nd. The entire event takes place under a marquee so even the British weather can’t ruin it! Adult tickets cost £15 for early birds and £17.50 (if purchased after May 23rd). To book your tickets visit www. fakefestivals.co.uk.

Interview | Celia Sawyer An Interview With

Celia Sawyer

Four Rooms is a Channel 4 series in which people believing they own a valuable artefact get the chance to sell it to some of the country’s leading dealers, each with a plan to get the best pieces in their possession. Once the owners turn down an offer however, there’s no going back! Interior designer and dealer to the A-list, Celia Sawyer is the most savvy of the dealers, armed with steely determination and an eye for the rare and beautiful, not intimidated by being a woman in a male dominated business. Keen to cut a deal and profit on every purchase, Celia has grown her company into a multi-million pound business in just under a decade. We grabbed a few moments with her as she travelled to her next business conquest, to discover the secrets behind her millions. After leaving school at just 15 you managed to found companies and become a self-made millionaire. Would you say that traditional education wasn’t the right path for you? That’s a very difficult question – I wouldn’t want to put anyone off being educated! Obviously it’s very important and I make sure my children get good schooling. But for me, yeah, maybe it just didn’t quite work out. I wasn’t the best at school, let’s put it that way! How did you start your first business? Just because I decided one day to do it! It was a photography business - I had one photographer that I was representing to get work and I decided to start an agency, so that I would represent photographers and get them work in advertising and stuff like that. I just decided to do it one day and I don’t ever think about who else is doing it, I just think I’m the only one! How did you get into Four Rooms? They were advertising, ‘Can you send in pictures of an interesting object for the show?’, so I sent a picture of myself and said, ‘What about me as a dealer?’. What first got you interested in art and interior design? I guess I’ve always been interested. I’ve always been creative, I’ve always been into drawing and painting when I was young, so I’ve always taken an interest. I used to love looking in show homes when I was very young with my mum. I just always had that fascination, I suppose. Do you have any words of wisdom for aspiring business youngsters? Don’t be afraid to try something you haven’t done before, and just work hard and don’t give up. What has been your highlight of working on the show Four Rooms? The highlight of working on Four Rooms was probably buying some really nice pieces… and getting my own back on Gordon [Watson, fellow dealer on Four Rooms]! Do you have any tips for anyone who thinks they may have a valuable artefact? Do your research, make sure you know everything about it and if you think it’s valuable, go and get it looked at by an expert, and then decide what to do when you’ve spoken to them.

Let more than the sun brighten up your home this summer

Living Room

Finally, after what seems like a thousand years of winter weather but is actually just a few months, we’ve had some sun. However, knowing the unpredictable nature of the British weather, we can’t rely on the sunshine to be blazing through our window panes all summer long. So we’re going to have to do something a little special with the décor to ensure you have a bright summer, whatever the weather. This month your house should be bright and colourful! No excuses, it’s time to step into summer even if the weather doesn’t follow you.

If you have to spend all your time inside this summer then chances are things haven’t exactly gone to plan weather wise, but in order to keep spirits high you’re going to need to brighten up that dull looking room. This month there are some stunning colourful pieces about; stick to warm, inviting colours in the living room, and remember the living room is the heart of the house. Why not liven up a monochrome sofa with a luscious, luminous Yves Delorme Solstice Jaune Throw? A small hint of colour will do wonders!

Kitchen

Le Creuset Tea for Two Gift Set £40, John Lewis www.johnlewis.com

Victor Chairs, Red £160, John Lewis www.johnlewis.com

There might not be the weather for all those garden parties you had planned for this month, so guess where you’re going to be holding those summer spiced events? That’s right, when the rain starts coming down, your guests are going to be headed straight for the kitchen! Better make sure it’s looking lively then. Selfridges have a fantastic range of bright and cheerful kitchen appliances, such as the Kenwood Limited KMix toaster in a half-blinding urban yellow, which will ensure that your kitchen is warm and inviting, even if your garden is dark and dismal.

Dining Room How about some afternoon tea? You’re probably imagining yourself lazing in the sun with an oh-soBritish cup of tea in one hand and your favourite copy of Chic in the other, but unfortunately that may not be the case. If you have to take your tea party inside to the dining room, you might as well do it in style. A cute and cheerful teapot might just be the answer; we love the pillar box red Le Creuset Tea for Two Gift Set, which is hard to miss as it combines bright colours with a stoneware classic design.

Bathroom

Foscarini Twiggy Table Lamp £413, Selfridges www.selfridges.com

Villeroy & Boch Numa Vase £59, Selfridges www.selfridges.com

The bathroom is your personal cleansing zone; a place of relaxation and pampering, right? Wrong, the bathroom is the place that wakes you up in the morning with a hot shower and a cold splash of water to the face. If the daylight coming in through your bathroom window is a little grim, you’re going to need something a little brighter to get you in the mood for the working day. A splash of brightness in your bathroom is just what you need. Take a look at the Linea Ducks shower curtain from the House of Fraser for some inspiration.

Are you seeing white, white and more white? Yes, the traditional bedding colours are plain and white; think clean cotton sheets and fresh linen scents, but isn’t that just a little boring? Adding summery sheets to your bed this month could mean the difference between feeling that summer buzz and staying stuck in the winter blues. Patterns and floral prints which incorporate stand-out colouring are on trend now. We love the Bedeck Capri Duvet Cover Set in Zest Green, with its colourful, chic floral bloom patterns and gorgeous vibrant colours.

Give us some tips for livening up the bedroom this summer. We’ve just received a selection of our new spring / summer bedding. For colours, we’ve gone very neutral so there’s a lot of ivory with accents of silver-grey and taupe. Neutral works with everything, and with these lightweight quilts it looks very stylish. Are there any key trends we should be looking out for when decorating? A trend we’ve seen this year is the tribal and ethnic trend. We have carvings and tribal art, and also lamps which are made from traditional Indian saris. Where do you get these pieces? Are they authentic? The owners, Peter Bennion and Kay Wallace, have travelled extensively over the years and sourced a lot of unusual furniture and accessories from India.

MOTORING THE DOWN-TO-EARTH Subaru XV unites city style with urban and off-road ability. It also has another ace up its sleeve – it’s the safest model in its class for child occupant protection. - Subaru XV 2.0D SE Lux Premium -

Every XV is equipped with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and a Boxer engine – ensuring an engaging and dependable drive in all conditions. Despite a ground clearance of 220mm, the Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) offers a low centre of gravity, which aids its “on-road” grip, and helps it to achieve 0-62mph in 9.3 seconds. The 2.0 diesel XV, on test here, is likely to be the best-selling model, offering class-leading fuel economy of 50.4mpg on the combined cycle, while emitting 146g/km of CO2. The car comes fully loaded with a standard kit list sure to make many premium compact SUV makers feel embarrassed. You can expect to find traction

The flagship SE Lux Premium model also comes with cruise control, a rear-view camera, Bluetooth functionality and USB/iPod connectivity. And if that’s not enough, a sunroof, Keyless Smart Entry, push-button start, leather seats and satellite navigation are thrown in too. If SUVs do it for you, this could be one to consider. A couple of things let the Scooby down though: some cheap interior plastics and a heavy clutch, but it’s a realistic choice if you’re keen to keep your family safe. TRAVEL

“This could be your summer if you choose to take a trip to the grand Spanish capital, though we can’t make any promises about the Spanish lover.” Picture the scene: you’re strolling along the epic sights of Gran Via, exploring the bohemian backstreets of La Latina, gazing pensively at the famous artwork in El Prado, relaxing in the sun whilst your Spanish lover takes the rows of your boat on a lake in Retiro park, or eating in some of the finest Spanish restaurants in the world. This could be your summer if you choose to take a trip to the grand Spanish capital, though we can’t make any promises about the Spanish lover. Flights Fancy a summer city break, but don’t want to break the bank? Well, if you don’t mind travelling light, Ryanair could be the answer. With flights each way starting from just £30.99 in June, not including baggage or any little extras, this is by far the most economic deal going. On the other hand, if you fancy a little bit of luxury to start off your mini break, a trip with British Airways will set you back around £81 each way, but at least you’ll get a comfy seat! Hotels Hotel Preciados www.preciadoshotel.com Located just off Gran Via (Madrid’s main shopping street), this is a hotel which boasts both style and substance. With four stars on Tripadvisor, the most trusted of sources, this hotel is sure to be a safe bet for any traveller who doesn’t want to slum it in a hostel. As a boutique style four star hotel, this is a grand looking building which promises its guests a night of “excellence” and “tranquillity”. Rooms start

from £81 per night and every room is fitted with a plasma TV with 42 channels; not that you’ll need it, given how much you have to see of the city itself! Catalonia Atocha http://cataloniaatocha.madridhotels.it/ For a cheaper option that doesn’t scrimp on style, try the Catalonia Atocha. Located near the Aton Martin metro station means that you simply need to hop on the Metro Line One to get to the centre of town. Being just on the outskirts of the centre does have its advantages though, and with starting prices at just £69 per night this is one of the best deals in the city. The hotel describes its rooms as “cosy, comfortable and fully equipped”, which doesn’t exactly inspire much awe, but with its reasonable room prices, five star status and location in relation to the city, this hotel is a prime choice for many budget sightseers. Bars J&J Books and Coffee www.jandjbooksandcoffee.com A coffee shop meets bar, meets English bookshop? This is one of the most interesting locations in Madrid. If you’ve somehow managed to forget your holiday read, you’ll find that the main bookshop on Gran Via has an extremely limited English section, but at J&J there are literally thousands of used books. The owner is an American named Jamie, who started the shop in 2003 because “the thing she missed most was being able to curl up in a big chair with a mocha in one hand and several books to read on her lap”. Along with her husband Javi, Jamie flew to America to gather thousands of books to sell in

the cosy shop. Ten years later, the place on Calle Espiritu Santo is going strong. Bar Museo Chicote www.museo-chicote.com The saloon style doors, a throwback to the 1920s, lead you into a beautifully decorated bar at the heart of Madrid’s night scene. Wooden booths give the illusion of a scene straight out of a Western flick; though the mix of art deco styling and walls filled with post-modern pictures update the classic look of this trendy bar. Located on Calle Gran Via, this is a central bar without the price-tag to suit. With a wide range of cocktails from the enticing and dangerous sounding Satan’s Whiskers, to the chocolaty wonders of the Alexander, this bar is one of the best places to start your night out. The Madrid party sene is infamous for its wild nights and, as in all of Spain, the party never stops. The price ranges from five to ten euros and, as if that wasn’t cheap enough, happy hour lasts until ten every night. Restaurants La Sanabresa www.restaurantelasanabresa.com If you’re looking for a traditional Spanish meal you’ve come to the right place. This is a Casa De Comida, which figuratively translates as “basic restaurant”, but don’t let that fool you, there is really nothing basic about this place. Located near to El Prado (museum) this would be a perfect lunchtime eatery. Choose from a range of traditional Spanish dishes which vary from eight to 15 euros per meal. The restaurant also offers a very reasonable and

tasty set lunch menu for anyone feeing peckish after a long hard day of relaxing in the heat of the city. La Sanabresa, which translates loosely as “The Natural”, is located on the Calle Amor de Dios. Viva La Vida www.vivalavida.com.es The Spanish food culture is based around meat and fish. This can be an absolute nightmare for any vegan or vegetarian visiting the country. Luckily, Madrid is varied in every area of its culture and has a great range of places serving up Spanish style cuisine, minus the meat. One of the best vegan restaurants, on Costanilla de San Andres, has to be Viva La Vida; a quirky looking boutique restaurant offering a range of vegan dishes and even a buffet. Think bohemian hippy in terms of décor; hanging lamps and luscious vibrant colours and even a garden, where you can catch the Spanish sun whilst you eat.

Attractions El Prado www.museodelprado.es/en You cannot go to Madrid without experiencing just a little of the Spanish culture and El Prado is the perfect place to start. The museum is a short walk from Sol, the city’s central square, and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Madrid. Along with many temporary exhibits, which vary depending on the time of year you choose to visit, the museum is also host to permanent exhibits. Most notably, El Prado is where you can find the Pinturas Negras collection by Fracisco Goya. The collection, which literally means the Black Paintings, is famous for its grotesque nature and depiction of semi-horrific scenes and was created when Goya was struggling in the depths of depression. General admission is 14 euros, and you should allow for at least an afternoon to explore the vast and interesting building. Parque del Retiro www.madrid.es Parque del Retiro is the central park of Madrid, with its beauteous gardens and a variety of attractions to keep you busy on a warm afternoon. This is the perfect free attraction, and is easy to get to via the

Catalonia Atocha Metro, simply alight at the Retiro stop. The park is host to a romantic rose garden, ideal for young lovers to stroll around in holding hands. Lakes are another feature of the park, with the main lake located close to the centre. Not only is the main lake gorgeous, but it is also host to hired boats which can be taken for a quick ride for a small fee. The park was founded as a royal park and as a result is kept in tip top condition all year round. If the weather is warm, and it will be, Retiro is a great picnic location. Make a day of it; the grounds are big enough to spend hours in their midst. Bar Museo Chicote The Oitavos Chic Asian Lifestyle Magazine | Issue 14

expert, Paul Jenkins, explains why in doing that you could be robbing your muscles of some vital energy. Is cutting back on your food intake alone the best way to go for losing body fat? There’s a simple answer to that question: No. Eating less food is not a direct stimulus for fat loss. Contrary to popular belief, losing fat is not just a case of energy in vs. energy out. Fat loss doesn’t quite happen like that if only it were that easy! The body can call on body fat stores in times of need for survival (and that doesn’t mean just

rock climbing at a moderate intensity can help you burn up to 400 calories in one session. Membership schemes are split into a Gold, Silver and Bronze category, each more expensive than the other. when you’ve deprived yourself of KFC). Body fat is not particularly metabolically active, thus it doesn’t require much in the way of energy, protein and amino acids to maintain. Muscle, on the other hand, is very metabolically active requiring a plentiful supply of energy, protein and amino acids. Suddenly dropping your food intake doesn’t mean your body will burn its fat stores and keep your muscle; instead it can rob our muscles of energy and even protein and amino acid (as proteins may be converted by the body to glucose for energy in a process called Gluconeogenesis) supplies. Of course, if you make a big enough reduction in your food intake you will undoubtedly lose “weight”, however not all of this will be fat and you could end up doing more damage to your physique than good.

Super Foods Avocado

When you’re feasting on a juicy Mexican meal and creamy dollop of guacamole, it’d be easy for you to assume it’s just another unhealthy condiment. In fact, guacamole is pulverised avocado, and a lot more healthy than you might think.

If you have never tried any of these activities before you will be surprised at the feeling of self-achievement you gain just from making it out of the door after each session. That said, you will be ‘fighting fit‘! Paul x

Avocado is pumped out with natural fats that are similar to raw organic butters and coconut oil. It’s also full of potassium and they provide close to 20 essential health boosting nutrients including fibre, vitamin E, B-vitamins and folic acids. They’re recommended by medical professionals and nutritionists as being great defenders of illnesses and diseases, most notably liver diseases. Zoya

383 Leeds Road Bradford, BD3 9LY

01274 305 333 Bradford has always been home to a range of gorgeous eateries and restaurants from across the globe. The choice can seem literally endless in this city and sometimes it can be a trial just to pick one type. In Café Zoya you can experience a variety of tastes from Indian food to American food to Italian food and more under one roof! The restaurant is relatively new, in that it only opened nine months ago. Since then it has fast gained popularity, something which can be attributed to the great dining experience offered. The in-house designed menu is made with a selection of locally sourced produce from the likes of John Street Market and St James’ Market amongst

various local trusted suppliers. Here at Chic we spoke to Akbar Junaid to find out what all the fuss is about. You’re quite well known in Bradford… A little bit yeah. I ran my dad’s business for eight years. He had an Asian sweet shop. So how did Zoya come about? My dad sold his business so I was bored. I didn’t know what to do and then I saw this property and I thought ‘Why not?’ I built it from scratch. It was a warehouse basically. Is your father still here and involved? He overlooks it all. He overlooks me as well to be honest with you. Why do you think you’ve been so busy? I think it’s new, it gives people another option in Bradford. Our food is good quality. Yeah, we use lamb where nobody else uses lamb. Everyone else uses mutton which is just fat. We use all HMC products which are halal certified for meats and stuff. We make our own pastries, our own desserts, our own sweets; everything’s cooked in house.

How do you ensure that each style is done to a good level? Well, my pastry chef is the best out there, my sweet chef is my dad and he’s the best out there. I have four guys doing my international food; an Italian lad, a Jamaican lad, an Algerian guy and an Asian guy. Im a big believer in if someone’s good at something, let them do it! What’s your personal favourite dish? Paneer. It’s an Asian cheese. It’s quite a mild cheese. It’s something I’ve always made myself. What kind of events do you cater to? We have a lot of Barrats, which is when before someone gets married, their friends take them out to have a cup of tea or a light snack before they go to the wedding hall. So we do a lot of those. We hold a lot of birthday parties. We’re child friendly as well, we have our own kids’ menu and crayons and colouring sheets and that stuff. And finally, what does Zoya mean? I can’t tell you. I can’t tell you. Well it means ‘blessed’ but I can’t tell you how I got the name. I can’t tell you how I chose it; that’s a mystery!

You have quite a range of different styles of food.

Noodle Inn Centro

15 Westfield Terrace, Sheffield, S1 4GH 0114 270 0735 www.noodleinncentro.co.uk The choice of Halal restaurants in Sheffield is not the most varied of selections, yet Noodle Inn Centro offers a much needed Oriental taste, with their fully Halal menu. The only Halal Chinese restaurant in Sheffield, the restaurant takes the incredibly popular dishes and name from the original Noodle Inn on London Road, bringing their winning recipe to the city centre. We popped down to take a taste. Since opening in Autumn 2012, Noodle Inn Centro has been continuously rammed to rafters with noodle lovers, a sure sign of good things. It’s a bijou haven of gorgeously luxuriant, traditional Chinese wallpaper, glimmering with gold, authentic Oriental accessories and, the hidden jewel, a courtyard area at the back with outdoor seating, twinkling fairy lights adding a mystical, magical atmosphere to the space. We started, of course, with a bowl of crisp and warm prawn crackers – always delicious and we had to remember not to fill up on these before the main event! Next came the starters – Prawn Toast and Honey Ribs. The Prawn Toast was satisfyingly filled to the brim with prawns, crispy and fresh. Sweet and oozing with succulent sauce, the Honey Ribs were moreish and delicious. For the main, there was incredible choice. The menu is split up into Big Bowl Soups, Big Plate Noodles, Big Plate Rice, Beef, Chicken, Duck, Lamb, Seafood, Tofu and Vegetable Dishes, then Hot Pot, Roast and Traditional Village Dishes. If there’s nothing there to tempt you, following this come the Traditional Szechuan Dishes. Faced with such a massive range of food, we played it safe with Chicken in Green Pepper and Black Bean Sauce, Chicken in Sweet and Sour Sauce, Plain Udon Noodles and Egg Fried Rice, plus a side of Salt and Chilli Chicken. When they say ‘big plate’ they mean, BIG plate. Even though we’d not chosen one of the big plates or bowls, even the normal dishes are huge – no one can go away from Noodle Inn still feeling hungry! The Chicken in Black Bean and Sweet and Sour Sauces were delicious – no quickly fried, simple takeaway sauces here. The Salt and Chilli Chicken is incredibly addictive – crunchy and flavoured to perfection, popping a little bit more in is inevitable! As the name suggests, the noodle selection at Noodle Inn is impressive, but Udon are my favourite – thick, juicy and delicious.

Koli has vowed to turn the restaurant around, making full use of the restaurant’s potential on the prime site. He is passionate about Asian cuisine, playing with traditional recipes to produce new dishes, full of intriguing flavours and tempting tastes. Feature | Curvy Kate

curvy kate Curvy Kate’s First Asian Model Makes It To The Final! After ten of Britain’s Best Busts called on the public to vote on their curves, the final of bra brand, Curvy Kate’s annual Star in a Bra search finally took place. One of the final ten was Sonya Kainth, 23 from London, who as half Indian and half Singaporean is the first Asian woman to model for the brand. The shapely selection beat over 700 D+ hopefuls in a fight to prove just how good curves look in lingerie. With British boobs doubling in size over the last 40 years and sales of D to G cups rising by 50% year-on-year since 2005, more women than ever are wearing fuller cup lingerie ranges. Many bra brands still lack in choosing models that relate to these statistics though. Going against the grain, Curvy Kate are championing shapely figures by searching for a D plus girl who is curvy, charismatic and confident, with a fuller body and natural chest. The pioneering model search strives to celebrate healthy figures, a positive body image and diversity. There are no age, size or height limits which means anyone can enter, as Curvy Kate believe a variety of looks should be shown in the media, for all women to relate to. Sonya Kainth comments, “I entered the competition because unlike a lot of people who have plus sized boobs and a curvy figure, I have been curvy and had plus sized boobs my entire life! After losing weight I decided that it is time for me to embrace my curves and celebrate my figure! This is what I hope Curvy Kate will help me to do. Now I am at a weight and shape that I am happy with I am excited to share my curves with all those other gorgeous curvy girls!” Sonya says of the competition, ‘Before I was a bit nervous but then as soon as I got there I realised how much fun it was going to be and really quickly got into it’. Her advice to anyone entering next year is, ‘Be confident! Curvy Kate really is all about your smile! So get it out and smile for the camera! Let them know how gorgeous you are. If you believe it – everyone else will see it!’ After getting through to the final ten out of over 700 entrants to the competition, Sonya did incredibly well and is a great inspiration for all Asian models out there. The winner of Star in a Bra 2013 however was Lotte Williams from Colchester, 22 and a student at London College of Fashion. She wins an international modelling contract with D to K cup brand, Curvy Kate, a fashion shoot with Cosmopolitan magazine and a chance to appear in the first ever lingerie catwalk show this Autumn. Curvy Kate offers lingerie and swimwear in D – K cups and is now available in over 500 stores worldwide including Debenhams, Figleaves, Very. co.uk, Simply Yours and Next.

Golfers raise over £1200 for Chari-Tee! Members of Saxon Golf Society in Rotherham have raised £1260 for Chari-Tee following a year of fundraising after a group member was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Inspired by their friend’s bravery during his treatment and touched by the support he received, the group and Saxon Public House organised a range of fundraising events to raise funds for the Lymphoma Association and Macmillan Cancer Support.

Why was the charity set up?

South Yorkshire Animal Rescue was set up 27 years ago, to counter the cult of giving away unwanted pets. This small service grew over the years and now covers the entire South Yorkshire area. It just goes to show what a lot of willpower and a small group of dedicated group of individuals can achieve. The past two years have proved rough for the charity, as a serious lack of volunteers has proved a massive hindrance. However the charity has been around too long to give up and the problem is being tackled head on.

Paul Joynes, from the society said, “Over the last few years, we have had the sad and unexpected circumstance of losing two past members, one to a brain tumour and one to a cancer related illness. in 2011, we found out that a member had been struck down with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and consequently have been raising funds towards the charity involved with this illness, but also for the care and comfort that the MacMillan nurses provided for him during the time he spent in Rotherham Hospital”.

How are funds raised?

The money was raised at the group’s annual golf day held at the Rother Valley course, along with pub raffles; proceeds were also donated from the Ryan Westwood snooker memorial trophy which is held in the Saxon public house in Kiveton Park, Rotherham.

The charity relies on your help, and cash and gift donations are a huge part in helping keep this vital service afloat. The rescue service is also in desperate need of volunteers to help raise funds in their shops and at their charity events.

Lylah’s Jewellery 97 White Abbey Road Bradford, BD8 8DR

07446 936146 If you’re looking for an alternative to gold bridal jewellery that doesn’t scrimp on style and sophistication there is really only one place to go: Lylah’s Jewellery. The brand new Asian jewellers is situated at the heart of Bradford’s shopping pulse, 97 White Abbey Road. Run by cousins Usmaan Zabair and Amman Sohail who, being fourth generation jewellers themselves, really do have the art of jewellery in their blood, the shop incorporates a traditional know how into a modern setting.

Working exclusively with their supplier of only the finest quality jewellery, Lylah’s Jewellers aims to ensure that every customer can achieve a unique and stylish look. The jewellers has a wide range of products to suits an occasion and with prices ranging from a cheap and cheerful tenner right up to high end products going for around £900; there really is something for everyone. Firstly, why did you decide to open the shop? We’re hereditary jewellers aren’t we? We’re fourth generation jewellers. We’re looking to see where we can expand our expertise.

Why did you choose to put it on White Abbey Road? We see it as a good business market. There are quite a few shops here so it attracts more customers here. It’s one of the busiest streets in Bradford. What sort of thing do you stock? What’s happening now in the Indian jewellery market is that there are different levels appearing in terms of customer preference and ability to buy. We’re talking the crème de la crème here really. Is it mainly focused towards wedding jewellery or is it general occasions? All sorts. Wedding, party occasion, bridal jewellery, really everything covered. Our jewellery will sell itself. Simple as that. What sets your jewellery apart? We’ve got gold plated sets hand made from brass material; that’s like the best artificial material you can use and also the most expensive.

Where did the name Lylah come from? It’s my cousin’s little sister’s name, so we named it after her to make her happy.

Wedding Feature

Could you do a wedding on a budget?

Love is in the air this summer, which may well mean wedding bells are ringing in your mind this year, but if your bank balance doesn’t quite match up to your dream day, you’re going to have to cut some corners. The words wedding and budget may seem mutually exclusive and you think that such a lavish occasion calls for a lavish bill at the end of it, but maybe, just maybe, you’re wrong. Make your own Mehndi You can spend an absolute fortune getting everyone’s mehndi done by professionals, but where’s the fun in that? A more traditional and, frankly, cheaper way of going about things is to do it yourself at home. Traditionally, the bride begins applying mehndi or henna obsessively in the weeks leading up to her special day, so that when it comes she has a dark and professional looking job, which will last post wedding. It is said that the darker the mehndi is the more her soon to be husband will love her during the marriage. Better still though, a new wife is forbidden from doing housework whilst the mehndi still stains her hands, so the more you apply prior the wedding, the less work you will have to do after it. Buying pre-made mehndi is an expense you can simply do without. Why pay for something that’s so simple to make yourself? We have a very simple mehndi recipe so you can make the mix yourself! Ingredients • 1 cup of henna powder • 3 tablespoons of instant coffee • 2 tablespoons of lemon juice • 5 drops of eucalyptus oil • 5 drops of clove oil Directions • Boil the instant coffee using a cup amount of water in a pan. Boil hard on a hot heat until the mixture comes down and forms into a thicker liquid. • Sift out the henna powder and slowly mix in the coffee mixture until you reach a desired paste like consistency. • Add two tablespoons of fresh lemon juice, five drops of eucalyptus oil and five drops of clove oil. Allow to cool and rest for two hours before use.

Beg, borrow, but definitely don’t steal Wanting to look your best on your wedding day is

14

Chic Asian Lifestyle Magazine | Issue 14

a given. This is the day when the rest of your life really starts and in order to enjoy every glitz filled moment of it, you have to feel your best. Gold has traditionally played a huge part in Asian weddings. You’d be hard pressed to find a bride without at least a little (or a lot) of bling on her. There’s a lot to be said for tradition; it is the foundation of the modern world, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune to achieve it. Buying all of that jewellery for your wedding day is just one more expense for something you’ll probably never ever use again. Why not take a leaf out of British wedding culture and go for the ‘something borrowed’ approach to accessorising? Right within your own family doors you have a wealth of ex-brides who would probably be more than happy to help you look your best on your big day. You never know if you don’t ask, so why not ask your family? Chances are they will have a range of unused jewellery that you can raid in prep for your wedding day. Tip: If you borrow just about everything you might be left feeling like nothing was really yours on your big day. To make things extra special choose one specific piece to buy just for you to wear on the day itself. This can double as a keepsake or something to be passed on to further generations.

Save on the invitations You have enough things to be spending the big bucks on for your wedding day, so why not save on something that will end up being recycled after the big event anyway? Making your own invitations may sound a little naff, but it really needn’t be! Instead it can be an excuse to have a pre-wedding party with your closest friends, gossip and generally enjoy yourselves! Spending a fortune on getting professional printing etc. is all very well and good, except it will lack that personal touch. By making this a group activity, you can lighten the load whilst catching up, and you can get as creative as you want with this.

You will need: • Some good quality card - This is the base of your invite. Reds and blues always look luxurious! • Glitter, ribbon and stickers - this is optional and not for everyone, but for all you glamour queens out there this is an essential. • Gold string Try tying up the envelope with a piece of gold string for that extra bit of style. • Calligraphy or fountain pen - practise and practise hard before putting pen to card. When you feel like you have mastered the art of calligraphy, write out your invitations neatly and don’t forget to sign off with loads of kisses.

DIY Décor

The venue has already cost a bomb and you haven’t even made it up yet! Save some money by doing the decorations yourself. Simple curtains and candles can help to create a cool atmosphere without breaking the bank. Of course, you can’t do everything yourself, but making some simple changes to the venue yourself could help you to save a load and keep the personal vibe going right on through to your wedding day! You’re going to need to splash out a little on table and chair covers etc. but there are some small touches you can make at home too. How about making your own favours? Or better still making your own centre pieces or table decorations? This will give your venue a personal touch and save you splurging on decorations that you just can’t afford. Of course, you can’t do everything yourself. We’ve compiled a selection of some of the best wedding suppliers in the region – maybe you’d better start saving!

KYRANJEET SANGHERA Face of Inspiration Couture 2013 Finalist

Launched in 2011, Inspiration Couture is the brainchild of company director, Anshu Saggar, which grew from strength to strength, inspiring the hunt for a Global Brand Ambassador to represent Inspiration Couture worldwide. The Face of Inspiration Couture represents today’s generation and connects the young Asians who want to live and wear the Bollywood dream. With last year’s winner, Jothi Bhachu, having gone on to establish herself as one of the industry’s leading models, the heat was on to find the face of 2013. We caught up with finalist Kyranjeet Sanghera, to find out how she got on in the competition, what she achieved and her dreams for the future. How did you get into modelling and modelling competitions?

My mother always said to dress like there were paparazzi outside – this of course as a young child was to ensure I didn’t go out in joggers and sneakers. However, I think I took that seriously! It has always intrigued me, coming from a Marketing background, how one person’s identity can lift and steer the success of a brand.

You became a finalist for the ‘Face of Inspiration Couture 2013’ competition how did you get involved? Inspiration Couture launched a search to find the next face for 2013, after the success of 2012 Global Ambassador winner, Johti Bhachu.

How did things progress from there?

Through a selection process of our photographs and conversation with Anshu Saggar, founder and director, 30 finalists were selected. Once it started, it rolled very quickly, with a few weeks after our first photo shoot and fittings with OMJ Photography and the IC team; our headshots were produced and the online voting started! The winner was chosen at lavish event on April 13th, hosted exclusively by Opulence

Events at Cavendish Banqueting Suite, with live performances by Avina and Kishan of Eastern Illusions paying a special tribute to the late Yash Chopra, all to be covered by B4U.

confidence; the genuine supporters you have around you and the motivation required to break the stigma in the industry and still being successful.

What have you learned from the competition?

Outside of the competition, what modelling work have you done?

The understanding of the duties of a Global Ambassador! Every few weeks since the finalist selection, the team at IC reminded us of the duties which are required by an Ambassador, not just being a model or face of the brand, but becoming an extension of their core message. Although it was a competition, a number of finalists were so supportive of one another, and the IC team really stood out from the crowd with their ‘family’ feel encouragement to all finalists – it is commendable to have an organisation like that in this industry!

How did the finals go?

It was a very exciting and nervous evening! The final was a glamorous event with a room filled with industry professionals, renowned media specialists, worldwide models and, of course, talented designers, make up artists and the cheering crowds of our family and friends. We got there bright and early for the final runthrough – the moment we were all dressed and in fittings, it all became a lot more real!

Outside of this competition I have worked as an Ambassador for number of reputable organisations, providing a face for their campaigns and promotions. However, this is the first time I have been selected for an Indian brand, which is very exciting because it has always been an area of fashion which I am a fan of !

How have you, as an Asian woman, approached going into the modelling profession? I have been very fortunate to be surrounded by strong successful Asian women in my family (my mother and two aunties); watching their unwavering drive to represent Asian women in their various industries really gave me the confidence that being an Asian woman is not a barrier, but a successful ingredient. Of course, I would be lying if I said there were no criticisms on Asian women in this industry in particular, but like any criticism I take it into account, ensure my values are maintained and carry on.

There were four rounds including catwalk, Bollywood aada and questions. There was an elimination announced after each round, and I am very proud to share that I made it to the final round and the final ten– not bad out of the original 300! It was a great moment sharing the stage with the top ten having successfully made it through all the rounds – it made all the hard work worth it. The deserving winner selected is also the current Miss Commonwealth Asia, so I didn’t mind losing the title to a professional, considering this was my first catwalk event.

What’s your approach to modelling and what advice would you give to young girls looking to follow in your footsteps?

How did the competition experience help you in your career?

Will you pursue a career in modelling further?

The competition has taught me a lot about the industry; any experience is invaluable – it adds to the knowledge and understanding of how it works, and of course you meet some reputable leaders in the industry.

Has this affected your future at all?

This has most certainly affected my future. The event attracted a lot of leaders in the industry who have started to guide me in keeping this up. It also taught me a lot in regards to self-

Never give up and keep your head up! It is a highly competitive industry; you have to be prepared for the critics! But every experience, especially the tough ones, make you a lot stronger, confident and industry wise. If we all stopped at the first no, there would be no one on the catwalk!

Yes, I will continue to do freelance modelling, keeping my focus on my studies and current career. There are some exciting projects I have an opportunity to be part of, so hopefully those will be something I can share with you next time! Having had my experience on the catwalk, it’s without doubt another area in this industry which I would like to be involved with. Follow me on t for the latest: @KyranJeet
