After last month’s delightful interview with gorgeous ginger Tim Minchin, I returned from Oz (one can dream) with courage in hand and this month attempted to quiz Black Books star and creator Dylan Moran. Apparently he is trying to quit smoking, which may account for the expletives. Nevertheless I was charmed into a cackle. The Spanish Plume recently landed and along with it touched down Spanish sculpture artist Jaume Plensa’s new exhibit at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and a new thriller from the creative minds who brought us “The Orphanage”. Exciting stuff that induces a thirst in me for Sangria.

For the past five years the city of Sheffield has been blessed with the quirky, original creations from duo Kirsteen Hardie and Lucy Newell, otherwise known as Syd and Mallory. This independent boutique was born in April 2006, their aim being to keep costs low by re-working new and vintage materials and bringing modern styles without the hefty price tag. The pair have come a long way since their first establishment described as ‘the lowest budget shop you could imagine’ and are now proud inhabitants of their very own boutique in the heart of Sheffield’s Forum.

Arctic Monkeys & Guests - Don Valley Stadium - 10th & 11th of June ‘’Get on your dancing shoes’ the Sheffield boys are touching down on home soil to headline a two day event at Don Valley Stadium this June. Among guests joining them at the 50,000 plus capacity venue are London four-piece indie rock band The Vaccines and Alex Turner’s The Last Shadow Puppets co-frontman Miles Kane. Playing their first ‘’outdoor’’ event from a customised tent, Alex Turner, Jamie Cook, Nick O’Malley and Matt Helders of the Arctic Monkeys will also be joined by fellow Sheffield band Dead Sons on Friday’s sell out gig. After the critical acclaim of his one man show ‘The Great Escape’ at 2010’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Rob Rouse is taking to the road this spring for a thirty date tour across the country. Stopping off at the Memorial Hall on Tuesday June 7th, Rouse-a former geography teacher- will regale us with tales of his recent move from the bustling Big Smoke of London Town to the peaceful tranquillity of the Peak District. Filled with hilarious accounts of bad decisions and the subsequent misfortune it lands him in, the show is Rouse’s second national tour and has received rave reviews. Rouse has been in demand from all areas of the entertainment industry since winning the prestigious Channel 4 ‘So You Think You’re Funny?’ award in 1998 and has risen from ‘warm-up’ act to prime time television star, co-presenting The Friday Night Project alongside Jimmy Carr and appearing on Spoons, 8 Out Of 10 Cats, Celebrity Juice and Sean Locke’s 15 Storeys High. Hilarious and not bad on the eye, we suggest you take the Sunday Time’s advice and ‘’just go see it!’’
The ginger haired, beat-boxing folk singer from West Yorkshire stirs from his current abode on various stranger’s sofas in the Big Smoke, to entertain his fellow Northern folk with treats from his new EP. Though only twenty, it’s already been an arduous climb to critical acclaim for Sheeran who pedaled his wares tuning guitar strings for Nizlopi, rapping and loop pedaling across the acoustic circuit, opening for acts such as The Noisettes and Jay Sean - hopping on a plane solo to LA to perform at every night that’d have him on the set. The latter, brave move caught the attention of musician Jamie Foxx, who invited Sheeran to live and record at his home for the rest of his stay in LA. Mix this with a little inspiration from his idol Damien Rice at the age of eleven and you have the culmination of acoustic folk hip-hop grunge that has caused a furor in ticket sales to his current headline tour. Sheeran is currently recording his first major label release which is due for release this summer. Los Ojos de Julia (Julia’s Eyes) The Showroom - May 20th onwards
Feast your eyes on another spine-tingling Spanish horror at The Showroom this month as they show Los Ojos de Julia as part of their World Cinema screenings. The Spaniards have dominated the genre of late with films such as The Devil’s Backbone, The Orphanage and Rec. garnering worldwide, mainstream success. Julia’s Eyes seeks to be no exception, having conjured much anticipation for its release this May. Produced by highly acclaimed master of horror Guillermo del Toro (The Orphange, Pan’s Labyrinth), the film stars Belen Rueda, who won a string of awards for her lead role in The Orphange. This film sees Rueda in the role of Julia, a woman who is slowly losing her sight to a degenerative disease. Upon finding the body of her twin sister – who shared the same disease - after an apparent suicide, Julia, who intuitively feels something more sinister has taken place, sets out to find the truth. Unkempt and curmudgeons, yet possessing a shambolic charm for which he is renowned, Moran has a loyal following, thus explaining the rare two date residence for a stand-up show outside of London. ‘Yeah, Yeah’ itself has opened to rave reviews for its highly polished content (where no subject is off limits), the ease and sermon-like approach with which Moran delivers it and the aching of the gut you’ll inevitably experience upon leaving the theatre. And are there any accolades that have melted your heart? It has changed my life. I no longer have
to open the fridge or climb up stairs. And yes, I was greatly touched to be voted 3rd runner up in Hull’s Annual ‘Least Lumpy Forehead’ competition. Although critical acclaim landed in your palm at the tender age of 24, were there ever moments when you considered going back into floristry? No, but I am thinking of opening a themed restaurant called ‘Conspiracy’ where all the waiters look like Donald Rumsfeld. Does it take a lot of effort to maintain your persona as an unsociable misanthropist or is it something that comes naturally? I am a cheerful person who experiences the odd mood-swing. Now f**k off. How many cigarettes do you smoke in a day…in a minute? Don’t count, am trying to quit. Don’t smoke children, it ruins their flavour. Aside from nicotine, what else do you adore to consume? I am devoted to warm pints of Walrus blubber mixed with a nice handful of jute. You’ve been described as ‘’a rambling James Joyce who’s had a few too many’’. How do you prepare for your performances and are they fuelled by a tipple of preference? I prepare with a secret routine involving T’ai Chi - Astral Projection, marine exercise drills and obscure breathing techniques from the Monasteries of Ulan Bator. I don’t listen to their insane demands to press me like a wild flower between their thighs. Although you created hugely successful Channel 4 show Black Books, do you have a preferred medium to work in? Oakum. What books do you cherish, Dylan? I cherish ‘ The AA Guide to Caravanning In and Around Rotherham ‘. Thus far, what has been your most terrifying moment on stage? When the shark ate the spare piano. How would you describe the experience of making ‘Tell It to the Fishes’? I would describe it as wet. eturn flights between the UK and Venice can be obtained for under £100 if you have flexible flight dates and are willing to look around a bit- so get searching and you can be in the beautiful Italian city within days! Flights take under three hours and the airport is just a short bus (or boat) ride from Venice itself, so you can be sat in a restaurant in north-eastern Italy in less than half a day. Accommodation wise, there are countless hotels along the canals so you won’t have trouble finding somewhere to stay. With lodgings ranging from the more luxurious hotels costing several hundred pounds per night, to cheaper accommodation costing as little as £50 per night, you can find somewhere perfect for you.
“ peaceful ambience ” Once you’ve arrived at your hotel you’ll probably be feeling peckish for a taste of authentic Italian food. Since it’s a coastal city, classic Venetian cuisine consists of seafood based dishes. Walking along the winding canals, you’ll never struggle to find somewhere to sit for either a romantic evening meal or a quick snack. You can take your choice of the local seafood speciality or opt for the general trademark
Arriving into the city of Venice in the blazing summer heat as the sun sets is one of the most spectacular moments you will experience. With the unique and stunning canal waterways that dominate the city, coupled with its beautiful architecture, you’ll struggle to leave this alluring city once you’ve entered…
Italian dishes- such as their inimitably thin and flavour-filled pizzas, classic risotto dishes, or bowls of spaghetti bolognese that set the taste-buds tingling. It’s also near-impossible to walk even a few yards without stumbling across a delightful gelato-stand offering a positively mindboggling array of flavours and tastes! This traditional, ancient Italian dessert is what inspired the tasty treat we know today as- that’s right - ice cream! So when you’re feeling hot from all your exploring you can cool down with a delicious gelato-treat. Now if you’re looking for a clubbing holiday then Venice may not be the place for you, since the night-life is fairly non-existent in this romantic city. However, that in no way means this city is dull or lifeless but rather it is committed to its cultural and peaceful ambience. The city of Venice is famous for its stunning architecture and visual beauty. Because the city has such a vast and culturally rich history, its buildings reflect the different eras and styles of the period. Perhaps the most famous is the gothic style of the fourteenth century with both Byzantine and Arabic influences. It is also one of the most unusual cities you’ll come across because of its unique
waterway canal system, which coexists with the traditional road system that one would typically expect in a city. Though Sheffield experience of canals may cause images of dank, brown water to spring to mind, the Venetian canals are long strips of deep, turquoise water upon which rows of houses verge. As a result, the city boasts traffic-free roads with a travel service of waterbuses and taxis instead- known as the vaporetti- by which native inhabitants and visitors are able to travel from place to place. There are also plenty of canal boat tours you can go on and this is a truly relaxing way to appreciate some of the cities finest points. Yet another popular tourist attraction of Venice is the Piazza San Marco (aka St Mark’s Square) within which sits the spectacular cathedral of Saint Mark’s Basilica. Upon entering you will be able to truly appreciate its beautifully elaborate and opulent design that is so characteristic a trait of the Catholic Church. You can visit the main room for free on Sundays and during the holidays (though beware the queues!). You’ll immediately be greeted with extraordinary paintings across the walls and ceilings and gold gilding wherever you look, and for a small price

WANDERLUST|VENICE you can also visit the church’s museum. However, it’s important to bear in mind that while this may be a tourist spot for some, it is a religious place of worship, so visitors must be wearing respectful clothing to enter (i.e. just make sure you cover your shoulders and legs!). Although not as famous a fashion location as Milan or Rome, Venice nonetheless has plentiful shopping outlets for our fashionably-inclined friends. So if you’ve just finished an intellectually stimulating visit to the Cathedral, why not wind down with a relaxing shopping trip? There are numerous streets of shops branching off from St Mark’s Square and you can have your choice of designer outlets or one-off clothing stores down Venice’s quaint streets.

“ Byzantine influences ” If you’re willing to splash out, you can also embark on day trips to the Dolomite Mountains of Venice with professional guide companies. Trips can be arranged with knowledgeable guides to ensure you maximise your experience and is only an hours van ride from Venice. During this excursion you’ll be able to enjoy a guided tour, optional lunch, and, most important of all, you’ll be witness to some of the most breath-taking views in the world. You’ll be guided to the Lake Santa Caterina and the famous Lake Misurina- and all this whilst gazing upon the awesome view of the Tre Cime Peaks. And, come the end of your holiday, you might be thinking that those Venetian streets looked vaguely familiar all alongand you’d be right; this gorgeous city features in the classic (and remake) film, The Italian Job, Madonna’s music vid, Like a Virgin, and was even the setting of Shakespeare’s play, Merchant of Venice (as the name suggests). So, as you’re walking along the canal banks, just remember that the likes of Madonna and Mark Wahlberg have walked them too…*sigh*… If you’re looking for a culturally-stimulating, city of romance, set in a stunning location, then Venice is the place for you. Within a matter of hours, you can be out of rainy Sheffield and into Italia’s sunny realms. Enjoy the food, absorb the views and bask in its exotic atmosphere.

Child Accident Claims Anyone with children knows that they are involved in minor accidents on a regular basis. Children are curious, sometimes fearless and often unaware of danger. That is part and parcel of being a child and however much you try to provide a safe environment for them to grow up in, minor accidents are to some extent inevitable.

• Playground accidents: Claims can be made if play equipment such as climbing frames were faulty or too high, or if the ground surface was inadequately padded. Were the children adequately supervised? • Slipping and tripping: If your child suffered an injury due to a spillage or obstruction and someone can be shown to have been negligent in ensuring their safety, you can make a claim. Their accident could have been at school or in a supermarket or other public place. • Nursery accidents: Claims for nursery accidents often revolve around unsafe equipment or unsuitable supervision. • Car accidents • School bus accidents • Faulty toys or play equipment
In some cases though, children can suffer injuries through no fault of their own, for example slipping on a wet floor at a nursery, or falling off poorly maintained playground equipment. If your child is involved in an accident and suffers an injury due to someone’s negligence, you may be able to claim compensation on their behalf. When your child is at nursery or school, they are owed a large duty of care by the people responsible for ensuring their safety. This means giving them adequate supervision, ensuring equipment is safe and being alert to the fact that children are naturally less aware of danger than adults. If this duty of care is not carried out, for instance if children were not correctly supervised, then the accident may have been preventable and the child may be entitled to compensation. Whether your child was at school or 22

A few examples of situations in which accident claims can be made on behalf of children are:
Children cannot make accident claims directly; a parent or guardian must act on their behalf. This role is sometimes referred to as a ‘litigation friend’. The rules on child accident claims are also different
than those for adults. A claim for an injury sustained as a child can be made up to 3 years after the child’s 18th birthday. This gives the child the opportunity to claim themselves for any injury suffered as a child once they become an adult. It is always advisable to make a claim as early as possible rather than waiting. This is because the incident will be fresh
“ someone’s negligence ” in the memory of those involved and any evidence may still be intact, for example photographs of faulty equipment may be available.
LEGAL|CHILD ACCIDENT CLAIMS Child accident claims can be complex and should only be handled by a specialist solicitor with detailed knowledge of the law in this area. Choosing the right firm to help you claim compensation is critical. The vast majority of accident claims today are carried out on a ‘no win – no fee’ basis. CUISINE|RECIPES Fresh Mackerel with Roasted Rhubarb
The first rhubarb of the year is summoned by candlelight from within dark sheds dotted around the ‘’Rhubarb Triangle’’ of Wakefield, Leeds and Morley. Perfect for consumption in early spring, the practice produces a much more tender, sweet vegetable. Such sugary sweet flavours should not only be confined to the crumble, but rather used as an unusual, tasty complement to savory edibles. Traditionally, rhubarb has long been accompanied by mackerel, thus with both these key ingredients in season, it is the perfect time to taste this nutritious, flavoursome dish.
To Cook: Prepared in 30 minutes, cooked in 25. Serves 2. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Cut the rhubarb into lengths of 6 inches. Place in a roasting tin with half a teacup of water and the light brown sugar. Roast for 10-15 minutes, until soft enough to take the point of a knife. Allow to cool, drain and reserve the cooking juices. Dip the skin side of the mackerel fillets into the seasoned flour to lightly coat.

Heat the oil in a large frying pan and gently place in the mackerel fillets, skin-side down. Scatter over the rosemary. Add the roasted rhubarb to the side of the pan to heat through, adding the capers for a vinegary flavour. Turn the mackerel after a couple of minutes, when the fish appears to be cooked halfway up the fillet. Cook for a further couple of minutes, then add the sherry vinegar for richness. Allow the vinegar to just come to the boil before removing the mackerel and the rhubarb. To the remaining pan juices add a little of the juice from the reserved roasted rhubarb to lift the crispy bits from the pan where all the flavour hides. Serve straightaway with the sauce over the mackerel and the rhubarb accompanying.

A small family run bistro facing the bustling thoroughfare that is West Street, Piccolos at first glance is hardly well suited to post modern Sheffield. It’s heavy, off white linens, clunky chandeliers and faux antique furnishings come together to create the ultimate Italian cliché. Low lighting, sentimentally dripped candles and mandolin

Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, the atmosphere perfectly sets the stage for a menu that is authentically Italian. Hitting the streets once again this month on the hunt for the best salons in Sheffield, I popped in to 284 Hair on Ecclesall Road to test out their hairdressing expertise. The shiny black front entices me in and once through the door I’m met with a sparkling boudoir of purple and lime green, complimented by a vintage white and gold couch, flock cushions, glittering star-shaped lights, a dominating spiral staircase and sophisticated black chairs and fixtures. Having opened in 1997, the salon is home to six stylists and aims to focus on fashion, using exclusive and innovative products to produce stunning and striking locks.
“ stunning and striking locks ” I was met by Steven Lakin, owner of the salon and my stylist; having been transforming barnets for over 20 years and at the salon for 13 of those, I was more than happy to put my hairs in his experienced hands! After hanging my head in shame at the state of my heat and backcomb damaged hair, we decided to snip off the dry ends to urge my hair back to glory. First up: the wash. As my hair was in serious need of a drench of moisture, Steven chose to initially use Sebastian Penetraitt strengthening and repairing shampoo, before lathering in Sebastian Volupt Shampoo and Conditioner to boost volume and protect colour, without making the hair too heavy, whilst I sat back and relaxed with a soothing head massage. Once back in the chair and wrapped in a shiny silver gown, Steven soothed in a dollop of Sebastian Potion 9 through my locks – a magical leave-in treatment to repair and protect. Whipping out the scissors, Steven square-layered my hair to inject blunt edges, boosting maximum strength to the ends, combing the hair upwards before snipping in a very unique yet effective style! Rubbing in Sebastian Texturizer, a protein liquigel for shape foundation, Steven then spritzed in a dash of Volupt Spray to build full-on volume, smoothness and elasticity. After blow drying smooth, the GHDs were slicked through lightly, before the magical Schwarzkopf Dust It was sprinkled into my roots to mattify the hair and give an unbelievable backcomb effect without the damage. Not a fan of wearing my hair down without extensions, Steven whipped up my hair and gripped in it place, creating a 60s-esque style with a low, sweeping fringe and high crown, before cementing it all in place with a blast of Sebastian Shaper Zero Gravity and Shaper Fierce hairsprays for a super hold for my structured look. 38

This month, I delve into the dangers of tanning alongside the much healthier alternatives, and popped down to see Alana Edwards at The Stillpoint Practice for a therapeutic massage to rub away those aching pains.
Dying For A Tan? With the sun having finally reached our British shores this month, lazy afternoons in the park are looking very appealing indeed. But the joys of sun worshipping bring with them some not so desirable results; we all know about the dangers of sunburn but the temptation to tan often proves too much to resist.
“ golden tan ” Think there’s no chance of suffering from the sun in Sheffield? Think again – health officials have recently warned that skin cancer rates are “significantly higher” here in the city than the national average, with 112 people having been diagnosed
with the most serious form of skin cancer in 2010. Even a golden tan can be bad for the skin, with unwelcome side effects like premature aging and leathery skin, on top of putting you at the risk of cancer. Avoid being another unfortunate statistic by taking care – spend time in the shade when the sun is at its hottest around 11am-3pm, use factor 15 sunscreen, cover up more at-risk areas with tops, hats and sunglasses and take extra care to shield children’s delicate skin from the harmful rays.
Faking It Longing for that golden brown tint? Don’t look towards the sun beds or even the real thing – with so many fake tanning products on the market there’s a much safer way to top up your tan at home. If the fear of being a glowing OompaLoompa in an orange mess has kept you away from the fake tan then think again – choose the right products and become sun-kissed not Tango-slobbered.
“ beautiful, bronzed bod ” Most products come in spray, foam and lotion form; sprays can end up all over your bedroom and lotions can be a bit streaky, so try the foams. There’s nothing more tell-tale than orange palms – always wear plastic gloves when applying your tan! Start from the neck downwards on clean, dry skin, smoothing on the tan leaving no gaps. Most fake tans have a guide colour so you can tell where you’ve been – this washes off in the morning to reveal the tan underneath. Avoid elbows, 40

knees and any other dry areas as the tan will stick resulting in a suspicious dark patch, and only lightly cover the tops of your feet and toes. Leave hands until last, rubbing the backs of your hands against each other. A dehydrated tan is a patchy tan; smother with moisturiser (a tinted version will prolong, even out and deepen your tan) to ensure a beautiful, bronzed bod fit for summer.

Having never visited a chiropractor or experienced sports massage before, it was with curiosity I stepped into Alana’s room at The Stillpoint Practice. After completing a questionnaire about my general health, lifestyle and any previous or existing
problems, Alana decided to give me a remedial massage to alleviate any tight muscles. Whilst sat down, Alana began with a check over of my spine to assess where any problem areas might be; tension, misaligned bones and any ‘unhappiness’ in the tissue. I then lay on my front with a soft warm towel covering my hips downwards, and using a hypoallergenic massage lotion, Alana worked down my neck and back giving a general massage all over, then concentrated on tight muscles to relieve tension and balance out the tissue. She then ran her fingers down my spine to pinpoint any misaligned vertebrae; on finding one she efficiently and painlessly tapped it back into place. Far from being painful torture, the whole process was surprisingly relaxing and I nearly found myself dropping off to sleep!

THE RODEO is Isuzu’s answer to the all-American pick-up truck. I say
that because I can just picture it doing battle with the rutted farm tracks of the Deep South while banjos play in the distance. But that ridiculous imagery soon evaporates when you get behind the wheel of the Denver Max Plus.
“ oodles of power and torque ” This plush pick-up from the Japanese motor manufacturer features the playthings you might find in an executive saloon: cruise control, two-tone leather upholstery, touch screen sat nav with DVD playback, CD/MP3/ WMA compatibility, and even a Bluetooth hands free kit. And with a throbbing 3.0 litre common-rail diesel engine at its core, the Isuzu delivers oodles of power and torque, whether you’re on or off the tarmac. Even though the toy-toting truck is stacked to the roof with goodies, the real bonus is the savings you could make at the pump. Combined fuel consumption for this burly beast is a very decent 33.6mpg and you can expect around 40 miles per gallon on out of town straight stretches. CO2 emissions are just 222 g/km - not bad for a big lump of metal with a classleading towing capacity of 3,000kg. gets really wild off the black stuff. The braking system scrubs off speed well and occupant safety is good with twin front airbags as standard and side protection door beams for all doors. Also, if you have young children, as I do, ultra-safe Isofix child seat mountings are fitted to the rear seats. Pick-ups certainly seem to be a good compromise these days and the Isuzu Rodeo Denver Max Plus is just the thing for all motoring occasions: it is a workhorse, a weekend towing-machine and a luxury family car all rolled into one.
