Bhagiraj Sivagnanasundaram is a travel and documentary photographer from Sydney, Australia. His body of work usually revolves around the way we live and how we are connected to the world around us. “When I am not shooting, I spend my time thinking about vibrant old cultures, a village, a stranger with a great sense of gossip and a sunrise over the valley of rivers and rice fields, he muses. In the recent past, he was shortlisted as a finalist in the prestigious Travel Photographer of the Year 2017 (TPOTY) contest. The atmosphere was calm and peaceful. The morning sunlight was bright and warm. The lotus leaves gave way as the Vietnamese girl rowed the boat through the silent waters of the Yen river in Northern Vietnam. Ah! How blissful to see all these through the viewfinder.

Abhishek Yadav, a mechanical engineer turned photographer, has always been fond of framing things. He started out with mobile photography. Sunsets were his favourite subject back then. When his best friend gifted him his DSLR and taught him the basics of manual controls, he hasn’t looked back since. He quit his job within the first four days and started doing photography full-time. That brought him to Delhi. Motorsports and travel photography were, and still are, his preferences but getting work in the beginning was tough. He loves framing fast action. “It’s quite hard but that’s what gives you the kick. To create a frame out of moments that zip by at 250 kmph. I don’t mind working all day in the heat as long as I’ve fast machines in front of me doing laps. This is the life I chose and I’m happy and proud. I’ll be happier the day I cover the MotoGP event”, says Abhishek.

A freelance wedding, lifestyle photographer and a traveler by choice. He’s more of an offbeat photographer. His images narrate simple stories but never fail to bring out the art within them. Faiz Sikandar is a true professional photographer people always look out for.
Riding up the mountains, high on adrenaline rush and pedaling through the breathtaking valleys amidst the daunting peaks, a few cyclists did everything possible to mark an item off their bucket lists. And more than just a tick mark, their journey stood the test of endurance and finally awarded them the freedom they set out to seek. The road that leads to Leh from Manali is a spectacular route that has been an awe-inspiring adventurous excursion for most of the seekers. A recent trip by Nomadic Destinations took a group of riders on their bicycles to this amazing journey of uphill and downhill escapade. Our very own Faiz Sikandar, a wedding photographer from Allahabad played a major part in this journey as a cyclist as well as a photographer capturing his dream itinerary. The journey which starts from Manali, actually needs a lot of preparations before the actual ride. Being mentally fit gets your 80% of the work done
already. I have had a friend who rode from Bangkok to Spain and he said this to me, “It’s all in the head. You don’t get tired unless you think you are tired.” So, keeping in mind, the cyclists started out on the expedition from Manali where they were all introduced to each other and were made familiar with the terrain and the journey that lay ahead of them. They were briefed about the laws of the mountains and were asked to follow the lead of the Marshal, Sujeet Pandey. But as exasperating as it was gonna be, the riders knew their prize and started their journey with enthusiasm. On the first day, there was a little warm up ride of about 40 kilometers which was concluded with a long chat and the magnificent win of France in the FIFA World Cup 2018. With France lifting their world cup, our cyclists with their high spirits, rode good and full of passion and ardor on the first day. They rode towards the Rohtang La Pass which is at the
grueling altitude of 13000 ft and the gateway to Leh and Pangi Valleys. Everyone was very tired but happy to have successfully completed the first day of the journey. The riders were up early the next day and prepped for the journey ahead as it was going to be the first of days where they would experience severe climate changes. This was the most challenging part as they were to cross many high altitude regions in a short span of time. The climate and the altitude changes drastically there, bringing a lot of changes in the body. But the cyclists, oblivious to the after effects, rode till 10 at night. The muddy terrain of ZingZing Bar was overcome with ease but the main task was crossing the dreaded Sarchu. In a place like Sarchu, the air seems to lose its moisture. Mostly all the riders felt the changes. Gautham’s (a rider from Bangalore) state started worsening from that day onwards. The journey from Sarchu to Pang FEATURES

What is the most exciting thing about capturing a player in action? How difficult is it to capture quick actions during a game? A. The most exciting thing for me is to capture ‘the moves’ of the players in action. To have a good shot, you need to have an idea of what can be the next move. I always gather some basic knowledge of the game which I’m going to shoot and it helps me a lot in capturing the most exciting moments. Indeed, it is difficult to capture those quick actions because those moments are not going to be recreated for you. Q. You are the photographer of Pro Kabaddi League. How did it happen and how do you feel about it? A. I am working as a sports photographer for the last 20 years and it was by my colleagues’ persuasion that I took to shooting Kabaddi as well. I couldn’t deny a new experience calling on me. And I would say that it’s been one of my best experiences. It’s more fun because the matches take 44 FEATURE
place in different states and I get the opportunity to travel and explore new places. Q. I see that you do both Wedding Photography and Sports Photography. Is it difficult to manage both these genres? Which genre do you enjoy capturing the most? A. Yes, I’m into both the genres of photography and both are very different. But sports photography is a bit difficult as you have to capture very quick actions and you always have to be in motion. You can’t stand still during a sports shoot and you cannot recreate the moments which you have missed. Also, most of the times you don’t get proper shooting conditions. The one with which I suffer the most, is lighting. You can place artificial lights but you don’t get enough time to adjust them. Whereas in a wedding shoot, you can actually relax while shooting because there you can recreate the moments and
ask people to pose. They’ll never deny. Q. Of all the sports that you have shot, which one has stood out for you? A. I guess cricket has stood out for me because I’m a huge fan of the game as well as the players. I don’t get much of it to shoot but it’s my favorite. Shooting cricket is an easy task because you don’t have to keep running with the players to click pictures, it’s mostly only the pitch where you have to focus. Q. The young generation is not very much into sports photography. What message you want to give them so that they are motivated for this genre of photography? A. It’s very difficult to motivate someone because sports photography is a very expensive hobby. If one is interested in the game then he or she will automatically build up a feeling. And, nowadays the youth

The Indian ice hockey team may compete internationally, but has limited resources, largely living off donations from supporters from around the world. Photographer Indrajeet Rajkhowa visits the team in the Himalayas to report on the team’s gruelling training regime in the midst of the Himalayan winter. “In January 2017 and January 2018, I travelled to Leh, Ladakh, to understand what drove India’s players to continue forward against all odds. The indomitable spirit of the players and coaches has fueled a collective dream. A dream to become something bigger. A dream to bring pride home.” In recent years, the tropical nation of India has been watching the growth of an audacious ambition - ice hockey. The game’s origins in the Himalayan region of Ladakh are
humble. In the eighties, locals would play a crude version of the sport to beat the ennui of lifeless winters. It involved chasing rocks on frozen lakes with makeshift skates and hand-carved sticks. In the last decade, fueled by the support of the hockey community worldwide, the sport has seen tremendous growth in India. Makeshift equipment has been replaced by generous donations of second-hand gear; gear that players from modest Ladakhi houses cannot otherwise afford. Amateur coaches (and more recently, professionals like Olympic gold-medalist Hayley Wickenheiser and former NHL defenseman Andrew Ference) from countries like Canada and USA devote weeks, often months, to bettering India’s players. This February, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau extended his support to the team and presented them with Canada’s ice hockey jerseys in Delhi.
