The night sky is a wonder that makes one want to fly. It is the most beautiful art, alive within raw energy, a song for the eyes. At times you could feel it vibrating somehow, whispering in a way the ears cannot hear. It is friendly when the world of people is so devoid of love. Being the sculpture of divine hands, it demands to be seen right. Perhaps, astrophotography was born as a result of this desire to freeze the starry night as a brilliant Van Gogh, with everything bigger and brighter, blurred in the most fantastic way. Chiiz Vol. 27: Astrophotography Special showcases the work of brilliant photographers who have tried and created their own Starry Night. Witness ‘A World Beyond Our Own’ as we present some of NASA’s picturesque photographs. We have Harold Feinstein’s photographs from the archives which just goes to prove how much of a great photographer he was. Ben McRae presents us with a glimpse of ‘The San’— a tribal community in South Africa. Makeup Artist of the Month, Shraddha Naik wows us with her skills and showcases an art of her own. Lucie Nechanicka takes fine art to a whole new level, showcasing the human body with sheer creativity. The work of brilliant astrophotographers like Mauro Cirigliano, Nicolai Brugger, Ninad Bartakke, Sergio Conceicao, Sanak Roy Choudhury, Ulf Aspland and Vivian Ambrose makes one want to stand and stare at the vast expanse that is the universe. Just gazing at the midnight blue canvas above steals every thought from the mind, the usual carousel of worries simply forgotten. The heavenly stars above and a crescent moon to smile down; what else is there to know about? This month, let us lie down and watch those gaseous explosions that reach to us as twinkling lights. Learn from them that just like there are no good or bad stars, no badly or well-arranged constellations, there is no good or bad art. So learn, create and inspire.

Revelling in the Night Sky
For over 32 years now, Ajay Talwar has been photographing the night sky and he says that the excitement and thrill of planning the images, that combine celestial and terrestrial objects, hasn’t waned a bit. Ajay travels with all his astrophotography gear all across India, especially the Himalayas, photographing the starlit skies. India is an enormous country of natural and cultural diversity. Through his TWAN (The World At Night) contribution, Ajay hopes to photograph many of India’s heritage under the starry sky. Shivika Garg from Chiiz talks with him and gets to know the tricks of the trade. Here are the extracts:

How did you get into astrophotography and what do you like the most about it? At first, it was a single photo which had recorded a large globular cluster containing a million of stars. The globular cluster is called Omega Centauri, in Centaurus constellation. I had exposed an entire film roll that night in 1987. The slide film had 36 frames, but just a couple of frames had stars visible in them. The shop where I got the film developed had almost thrown the film in the bin. There was but one frame, which was loaded with stars, Omega Centauri cluster was clearly visible! That was my impetus for astrophotography. It is also the sense of achieving the difficult, because the genre of astrophotography, especially deep- sky work, was not normally taken up by those interested in photography. Astrophotography is quite technical but gives you the satisfaction of shooting something not every photographer does. As I shifted to digital astrophotography, the technical part seemed to get easier, as I was able to review the results instantaneously and improve upon my techniques. My focus then shifted to shooting ‘artsy pictures’, i.e., pictures with elements of the night sky along with elements of the earth such as natural wonders, scenic places, ancient monuments. I was invited to become a member of The World At Night (TWAN) from India. From then on my interest increased in the earth & sky photography. India is filled with ancient, natural and technical wonders. I would like to photograph them all under the stars and celestial bodies. While shooting the deep sky, what are the things you keep in mind? What is the creative process behind it? There are various kinds of deep-sky objects to be photographed in the sky. The main thing to keep in mind while shooting deep sky objects is to match the field of view of the camera and telescope combination to the object being photographed so that the object fills up the field of view considerably but does not overflow on the sides. Traditionally deep sky astrophotography is done using heavy and stable mountings located permanently at observatories or other locations. These days astrophotographers are increasingly using portable equipment to shoot the deep sky. These are known as portable trackers, which run on batteries. These light portable equipment can be carried too far off and remote regions such as a long trek in the
Himalaya. Using focal length lenses such as 100mm to 200mm, you can capture long exposure tracked photos of Milky Way, individual nebulae, etc. Some of the trackers have multiple settings such as half the sidereal rate of motion, which can be effectively used for deep sky objects against the horizon and Earth. How difficult is it for regular photographers to pursue astrophotography and deep sky photography? Deep sky photographers come from a background of being either amateur astronomers or from a background of photographers. To photograph deep- sky objects, a good mount is as important as the imaging camera and lens or camera and telescope combination. To shoot deep sky objects we need to use longer focal lengths. We also need to shoot long exposures. The importance of a good mount cannot be stressed enough. Further the mount needs to be capable of tracking the objects across the sky. These conditions are quite stringent on the mounting. Those with a background of amateur astronomy are familiar and understand the importance of the mounting in deep sky photography. Many of the regular photographers are overwhelmed with the stringent conditions that deep sky astrophotography needs with respect to mount, noise-free low light cameras and fast lenses. There is a fair bit of investment required for astrophotography equipment. Astrophotographers also need to travel to long distances carrying their equipment in order to find dark skies where light pollution is nonexistent and where the view of the deep sky objects is devoid of dust, pollution and clouds. While you can take up nightscape photography easily with lightweight equipment, deep sky photography is more involved. What are the common mistakes in astrophotography that you see other photographers doing? Getting the composition right for astrophotography is difficult, mainly because there is hardly any visibility from the viewfinder at a dark location. The only way to
frame the scene is by shooting a test frame. Some of the common astrophotographers’ composition mistakes that I see are that there is no prominent subject in the sky image, there are electric poles, towers jutting half in the frame, or even half a tree jutting in the frame. Unseen electric and telephone wires always appear in your frame when you come back and see your images on the large screen. Bright lights shining in the image or forming halos when they are out of the frame. Some of the technical mistakes that I commonly see in astrophotos are heavy noise, out of focus stars, saturated white stars and star trails devoid of colors. Sometimes, I see that the tripod has shaken and bright stars are trailed. This is because the image stabilizer is switched on while shooting a nightscape on a tripod. You need to turn off the stabilizer for long exposure astrophotos. I see a lot of star trail images with long and irregular gaps between exposures, which look bad in the final star trail image. Post processing mistakes are also quite common. Sometimes the image is dark and nothing much can be seen except a few stars. Many people selectively brighten the Milky Way and not the entire sky portion, which becomes readily apparent. Tungsten white balance, which makes the image look extremely blue is another common mistake. Overexposed deep sky objects, test frames incorporated in star trails, no contrast or excessive contrast and color in the image are some of the common mistakes. There is also the sacrilege of joining two separate images together, one shot using a long focal length such as an image of the moon using 400mm lens and another shot using a wide angle lens, such as a mountain vista using a 28mm lens and then join the two together to form one composite, really bad!

Movie Review The Mexican Suitcase
Duration: 1hr 26mins. IMDB Rating: 7.6/10 Released: 2011 Genre: Documentary, Drama, History
The Mexican Suitcase is a very wellstructured movie, taking up the background of a series of events that took place before World War II and its impact on people. It is a historical movie focusing on the tragedy that hovered upon the people of Europe and how after all these years, one day in 2007, three lost boxes called ‘The Mexican Suitcase’ were recovered. It is directed by Trisha Ziff who is one of the most fantastic detective story documentary teller of all time. The film had its world premiere at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival and since then it has been added to the shelf of one of the finest historical dramas, it has a good share of viewers, not only from the photography background but even people having an inclination towards historical events have appreciated it. The movie has a very interesting baseline coming from one of the most unexpected discoveries of 4500 photograph negatives found
42 CLASSICS
in a closet in Mexico which had disappeared during the chaotic events that took place in Europe at the beginning of World War II. The film is an absolute portrayal of atrocities faced by the people of Spain. The movie exhibits the work of Robert Capa along with two other photographers who have successfully captured the incident in the best possible way. In the history of photography, there have been very few photographers who were able to leave the footprints behind but nobody could do it the way Robert Capa did it. A Hungarian photographer, he devoted his heart and soul to redefine conflict photography. He has a very peculiar way of expressing a story through his photographs. The frames captured in the movie are very heartfelt and touching for the audience. It features an exiled women tenderly holding up an old worn-out fork while describing the hunger she experienced as a child during that dreadful event. Ziff has also captured the interviews of new-gen Spaniards who were really young when Franco finally stepped in the initial ‘70s. Another man who shares his story of how he had spent his teenage years by eating and sleeping beside his gun to safeguard him against the massacre that took place. The way he has depicted the haunting memories of repression and dictatorship in people’s lives in Spain has created an everlasting effect on its viewers. Also, he has portrayed very well how this exile still defines the identity of people who have established themselves there and what three generations and 30 crude yet progressive years have meant for Spanish people.
Keeping this the base theme, he has also paid tribute to the spirit of three extraordinary photographers Robert Capa, Gerda Taro and David Seymour who passionately believed that photographs could change and shape the way we see the world. It is a film that has satisfied people’s expectations and has done an exceptional job of depicting the storytelling of photographers with a captivating mystery-solving narrative. However, it becomes even more crucial and worth watching because along with the journey of the suitcase, it has a very strong parallel content in terms of capturing the journey of Spanish refugees from Spain to the refugee camps on the beaches of France to their final destination in Mexico. The film also gives an exclusive insight into the importance of memories and their ownership, not only by the photographers who captured events with their cameras but the people who survived those same events. Ziff has really tried to leave an impact on people about how mankind can cause harm to itself and how important it is to value people above everything. It is a good movie that brings together three narratives: the suitcase, the exile story and how people in Spain today address their own past, 30 years after transition. The Mexican Suitcase addresses the power of memory and asks, “Who owns our histories?”

Horsehead Nebula by Williamina Fleming and William Henry Pickering
Location: 05h40m59.0s (right ascension), -02°27’30.0” (declination) Constellation: Orion, the Hunter Distance: 1,500 light years Apparent size: 8 x 6 Arcminutes Magnitude: 6.8 Designations: Barnard 33, IC 434, LDN 1630, M3T 31, [OS98] 52
Approximately 1400 light years from Earth rests a small dark nebula about 2-3 light years across in the Orion constellation. This nebula, located on the eastern side of Orion’s belt, is a part of a much larger cloud complex. Yet, it makes sure it stands out, looking very much like the head of a horse. Known commonly thus as Horsehead Nebula, it was first discovered by Williamina Fleming and recorded in 1888 on a photographic plate in Harvard College Observatory. A nebula is a cloud of dust and gas in outer space, and Horsehead is a region in Orion Molecular Cloud Complex containing over a hundred organic and inorganic gases and large organic molecules of dust. It is prominent in the winter evening sky in the Southern Hemisphere and summer evening sky in the Nothern Hemisphere. It alternates into nearly complete opacity (in optical light) and transparency (in infrared) due to blocking all light and glowing due to nearby Orion’s star. It is beautiful in the sense that it is a womb for bright young stars in the process of formation. The bright spots visible on the nebula are low-mass protostars. It is speculated that the clouds of the nebula have already dissipated but it is made of a more stronger material that stays together and hasn’t eroded. The Horsehead Nebula is most easily recognizable, and most photographed and documented due to its beauty, characteristics and location. Edward Bernard was the person to describe it first, and so, as was common practice at the time to not credit the women behind a discovery, Bernard cataloged it under the name 48 CLASSICS
of Bernard 33 and Williamina’s notebooks were forgotten, alive only in boxes stored at the observatory. In 2015, Lindsay Zrull discovered 118 boxes that held notebooks of many such women and decided to get them transcribed. The process took years. Edward Charles Pickering often shouted at the men in his office saying that his Scottish maid could do the job assigned better than them. He was right. Pickering’s Scottish maid was none other than Fleming, who had no prior Harvard education, or astronomical education. She was a prodigy. Pickering tasked her with improving an existing catalog of stellar spectra. Not only did she ace it, but she also helped in devising a system to classify stars based on their hydrogen content. Williamina Fleming is also the discoverer of the first white dwarf and played a major role in understanding the strange nature of white dwarf stars. In 1899, she became Harvard’s curator of astronomical photographs, remaining the only woman to hold that position until the 1950s. She also became the first American female to be elected to the Royal Astronomical Society in 1907. William Henry Pickering, also an astronomer and brother of EC Pickering had made a telescopic photogrammetry plate on which Fleming discovered the Horsehead Nebula. She described it as ‘a semicircular indentation 5 minutes in diameter 30 minutes south of Zeta Orionis’. It wasn’t until much later that she received its credit.
Fleming belonged to a team of human computers, an all-women team assembled by Pickering to do mathematical computations and categorize stars. Fleming went on to publish “A Photographic Study of Variable Stars” (1907), a list of 222 variable stars she had discovered; and “Spectra and Photographic Magnitudes of Stars in Standard Regions” (1911) along with her comprehensive discovery of white dwarfs in 1910. Fleming discovered 59 gaseous nebulae, over 310 variable stars and 10 novae during her career. Fleming gave a speech at the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago stating that although women lag behind men (at that time), the differences were not biological, but in fact cultural. Given the opportunity, women will become equal to men. She promoted hiring more women as assistants and astronomers. A simple female group that started out as Pickering being tired of his male fellow colleagues, thinking his ‘Scottish maid can do better’ led to not only Williamina Fleming, but also astronomers Henrietta Swan Leavitt, Annie Jump Cannon, Williamina Fleming, and Antonia Maury among others to discover, design and decode a vast array of astronomical observations. Ruchi Kapoor ruchi@chiiz.com Ruchi Kapoor is an enthusiast and an observer. She practices as an architect and believes that she can take best photographs of the built environment; which she calls ‘man-made art’. The San Ben McRae is a photographer based out of Wollongong on the beautiful south coast of New South Wales, Australia. Whilst he is at home, he works as an ocean lifeguard and focuses his attention on the beautiful seascapes that surround his home. His full-time occupation allows him plenty of time off during the Australian winter to follow his real passion in photography, capturing the various aspects of Africa. Ben’s regular travel to Africa and his subsequent photographic journeys have seen him drive thousands upon thousands of kilometers through all of southern and eastern Africa in search of that perfect image. His obsession with Africa began when he was picked up by his relatives to go on a surfing holiday down the South African Coast. Little did he know that his relatives had something else in mind. He was swept into the fabulous Natal National Parks and after a few hours, he was chased by a bull Elephant, he knew then he had a new focus in his life and since then has returned on an annual basis to his mother’s homeland. After some time, he took a hiatus from photography, but returned to it soon. His specializations were children, family, fashion and reportage photography. Andrey began to deal with aerial photography about two years ago with a friend’s proposal to try flying on his quadcopter. Andrey enjoyed his first flight so much that he couldn’t help shooting from the air. The world from a height, of course, is very different and captivating. choose one winner, as all the entries portrayed powerful faces and a wide range of emotions. I chose the portrait of the lady in her traditional dress because it conveys a strong sense of unique culture and has a powerful connection in her eyes which reveals a somewhat quiet and introspective personality. The lighting helps reinforce this mood perfectly with the dark shadows that smoothly blend into the bright natural light and the background also compliments. The composition is also creative, having her face in the lower third and it works well to balance the scene. I find this portrait very engaging while also being culturally fascinating”

When Manuel Diamantino Freitas de Jesus (artistic name- Diamantino Jesus) and José Diogo Vasconcelos de Freitas (artistic name- Zé Diogo) set up DDiArte in 1999, it was only a painting workshop where they brought together the best of both of them for the purpose of creation and painting on canvas. In 2003, after several experiences in the field of digital photography, they discovered the ideal means to express their creativity – Digital Photography artistically touched up. Within the context historiography of art, the use of photography, and more specifically, touching up photographs, is nothing new. However, they do aim to innovate somewhat, in terms of the themes on which their work is based. Regardless of the fact that their main source of inspiration is mythology, up-to-date themes or others that are the simple fruit of their creativity, still remain full of details, of symbols, of images, an attempt to captivate, but mainly, as an attempt to stimulate critical thought in viewers.
