Q. How has your journey in the field of photography been so far? A. It has been an amazing journey. I feel really blessed and lucky to be able to pursue my passion as my profession and grow from being a photographer to a film-maker as well. There is so much to learn and do. I am really looking forward for more learning and experiences.
Q. Having shot across various genres of photography, how would you describe your style of photography? I have always believed that a commercial photographer has to deliver what the clients and project requirements are. So, I would not want to restrict myself to any specific style of photography, but yes, I love to use huge set ups and create images which says stories.
Q. Tell us about ‘Just Click’ and how did the idea culminate into such a big enterprise? A. “Just Click” is my 14-year-old baby that I have nurtured and bagged clients like Skoda, Bajaj, Apollo Tyres, Maruti Suzuki etc. in the automobile industry and countless others in corporate, aviation, industrial, fashion and architectural sectors. Being a self-motivated personality helps me explore different unused methods and ways to be used to grow professionally. I feel delighted on looking back at the distance I have covered since the start of my journey. Just Click has started a venture to help the masses learn photography in the simplest possible way. While most of the professional photographers think of commercializing on photography tutorials, I believe in educating the masses and spreading the knowledge for the development of photography. “Shoot It Right”, a free-to-air YouTube channel, is the product of my belief and a gift to the photography society.
Q. Any advice for photographers to convert? The advice that I would love to share is that if you are doing photography as a hobby then things are different, but if you want to pursue it as your business, then apart from capturing good pictures, you also have to look at yourself as an entrepreneur. This is because you have to do marketing, production, management and lots of other things apart from photography. A lot of people feel that this is a glamorous field and is full of fun and travel. Yes, it is fun, but it also involves tremendous hard-work and dedication. So make sure you are ready for it when you decide to take this up as your profession.

App of the Month A Color Story
Category: Photography Rating: 4.4 Platform: IOS and Android Cost: Free (In-app Purchases)
In this month’s issue of Chiiz magazine, we look at ‘A Color Story’- an app which has become one of the most popular photo editing apps. It is a paid app by Lifestyle company which can be downloaded and installed on both IOS and Android devices. Many Instagram users love the Color Story app for its muted and moody tones, which give bright whites and vibrant colors. It has created quite a buzz in the photo-editing space. But does the app live up to its hype? We review the pros and cons to help you decide.A color story app comes with a wide range of filters which attract photo lovers. It enhances your photos with effects such as the color fog and light flares effects. While editing, you can use multiple effects which can make your images truly stand out. This app provides a desktop version as well and is a slightly lower version of Lightroom in your mobile phones. It enhances your photo editing for social media platforms and includes over 20 free tools. The tools in a color story app are sturdy and one of its reasons for gaining popularity. These tools are easy to use and can help you significantly enhance and alter your photographs. It includes options to adjust brightness, clarity, contrast, curves, saturation, temperature and other elements of every photo. You can also crop or rotate photos, adjust shadows and tints, or add vignette effects. You can also create and save your own custom filter to apply it to your photos again. The best thing about ‘A Color Story’ is that its strong tool collection is available for free. If you are not a beginner and know the basics of photography
adjustment and are comfortable editing photos, the free tools may be all you need. However, if you are a beginner and your editing totally depends on filters, then you might face a few problems as there are limited free filters available on this app. Many social media sites have become a platform for photographers to show their skills. Most people want their pictures bright and vibrant with an aesthetic Instagram feed. Even some small and medium scale businesses including restaurants, clubs, etc promote themselves on social media and ‘A Color Story’ is an app that will not only help in making the colors of their pictures pop but also helps in planning your Instagram grid. With over 20 free tools. While ‘A Color Story’ has quite a few in-built filters and tools, it also requires a purchase for many filters and effects. Users who are totally dependent on filters for editing might have to purchase its filters because it offers very limited filters and effects in its free version. The main drawback of this app is its user interface which is somewhat confusing but not too bad. It may frustrate you while doing editing in the beginning but as you get a hold of this interface you will be able to edit your photos easily. Chiiz Opinion If you are frequently uploading your photos on a social media platform and you are in search of some good editing apps, then ‘A Color Story’ may just be a good option. Its bright and vibrant colored filters give unique effects to your photos. However, it gives you limited access to its filters and effects in its free version and many people don’t wish to spend on editing apps just to upload photos on social media. But if you are the owner of small or medium businesses and have a low budget for a professional photo editing app, then it is the best app for you. It is also a good app for the professionals because it caters to all the requirements of a proper photo editing software and is available in both the mobile as well as desktop. Q. What got you started with Automotive photography and what keeps you interested in it? A. Sheer boredom, to be honest. While doing a degree in animation, I started experimenting with the camera phone I had, playing with compositions— mainly for drawing references. After completing my degree, I wanted to pursue filmmaking but I felt that I wanted to use photography as a medium to tell stories and emotions in a ‘subtext over text’ or ‘read between the lines’ method. My father gifted me a Canon 60D as he saw potential in me and I decided to combine the two things I adore the most— automotive culture and art— and it has been an interesting journey ever since.
Ford GT 2017 Sony A7R 40mm ISO100
Q. Can you break down your creative process from envisioning or planning the shoot till the final output? A. Each automobile has its own heritage and a story to tell. As an automotive photographer, my job is to reflect the symbiotic relationship between artists and engineers. When I get a subject, I do my research to understand their pedigree and conceptualize a theme. Then comes location recce. I take reference images from the location to make notes and create a light graph. Then, I do the post processing and voila! Q. Which gears do you think are ideal for automotive photography? A. Any working DSLR will do, it’s the lens that matters. My go-to lens is the 24-70 2.8 and if I am shooting in medium
BMW R1200 GS Sony A7R3 25mm F/8 1/400 ISO200
Q. Your photographs are quite dramatic and make one wonder about the post-processing. Which techniques do you use to create drama around your photographs? A. If we have the right amount of patience, knowledge in lighting and physics, we don’t need to rely heavily on postprocessing to create these images. I want to create images which have character, if there is no golden hour, then I’ll create one with external lighting. Need dust? You throw dust straight into the camera. Whatever it takes for that image you are looking for.

Ferrari 330 P4 Norwood Sony A7R 35mm ISO100
format, I usually work with 35mm and 40:80 Schneider Kreuznach lens. My current camera gear consists of a Sony A7R3, 55mm 1.8 ZEISS, Sony G Master 24-70 2.8 , Manfroto tripods, Precision heads, Icelight v2 (for light painting ) and my trustworthy profoto b1 for lighting. All carefully placed in my dedicated Pelican Air case.
We do have to improvise things in post when we are not able to get what we need. For example, bad weather, lack of budget or other mishaps. Post-production for me is the final touchup we do to our creation. Tuning the finer details as much as we can. The Porsche GT3 RS rain image took a good 1.40 hrs. It was also a test to see how much I can do with a limited budget. I had to manually spray water from different angles to create the right amount of volume of actual rain and then control the specific ambient lighting on the car, mixing slow and fast shutter. I shot over 300 exposures and then combine all that in a post. Q. Apart from taking photographs from unusual and interesting angles, what other composition techniques do you have in your bag of tricks? A. I get my inspiration from the movies, anime and comics. I always focus on angles that are interesting and work with locations and patterns that helps me to focus more on the subtext. For the more complex and experimental shots, I draw sketches and come up with unique compositions which helps me to create a mental note for lighting as well.

Old is Gold The First Automobile (1885–1886): Benz Patent Motorcar
We all know about the famous Mercedes-Benz international motor vehicle corporation, which is a symbol of luxury, dynamics, facilities and of course domination all over the world. But where does it get its name from? The Mercedes-Benz is a marque of the Daimler-Benz Corporation, which was formed as a result of the merger of the companies DMG and Benz & Cie. Benz and Cie was a corporation owned by three individuals - originally for production of static gas engines and cycles until one of the individuals designed something even better. Karl Benz was sponsored by his wife Bertha Benz when he decided to try making a petrol-run car. This was the first motorwagen that would travel far, by generating its own power, unlike a motorized stagecoach or a horse carriage. It was the first car. And Karl Benz named it ‘the Benz patent motorwagen’ His 1885 model of the car was not stable at all. It crashed when he gave a demonstration to the public. And we know he didn’t give up because we have supercars today. He received his patent for the first ‘automobile fueled with gas’ on 29th January 1886. His second and updated model made a success when he tested them out, finally being able to travel a longer distance with safety. After more changes in 1887, Benz began to sell his invention commercially in 1888, mostly selling units to Paris due to a tie-up with Emile Roger, who made Benz engines in Paris and was also his customer. The ‘Benz Patent Motorwagen’ also became the first commercially available car. This car had no gears and could not climb hills unaided until Benz’ wife Bertha Benz suggested him to add brake linings and gears. Bertha and two of Benz’ sons went on the world’s first long-distance road trip without informing Benz, proving the car’s real worth and opening up a tremendous amount of possibilities. A lot of first’s were coming the Benz’ way. Bertha went on a 104 kilometer trip from Mannheim to Pforzheim to visit her mother. Her intention was to do what we call today as a live demonstration or live marketing. She wanted to show the world what the vehicle was
Contemporary photo of the Benz patent motor car, model no. 3: Such a car from the year 1888 was sold by Emile Roger to Great Britain, as evidenced by the badge. Today, this is the oldest patent motor car in original condition that is known to exist.
capable of. Along the way, however, she learned of the issues she faced and made sure to rectify them. Bertha took her two sons Eugene and Richard with her and stopped at pharmacies on the way to refuel. She easily realized she needed brake linings. She made a shoemaker nail leather on the brake blocks. She made many other repairs along her journey and only notified the husband after she reached. Surprising as this sounds for 1888, this paved a way for Benz and Cie to make a world wide debut of their design in 1889, selling 25 vehicles between ‘86 to ‘93. This design has only three wheels, with spokes made of wire initially and later of wood. It had a tubular steel frame and an electric ignition. The patented model was 958 cc, with 0.8 horsepower and gave a speed of 16 km/h. The commercial model, however, had 1600 cc and was slower at 13 km/h. Which means Bertha Benz spent a good 8 to 9 hours at the rack and pinion steering for her trip. The vehicle had a four-stroke horizontally-mounted watercooled internal combustion engine, initially of gas and later of petrol. A whole range of models was to come. A whole range of patents made. In his own time, he advanced his own invention exponentially. Ranging from Viktoria to Velo to the Omnibus. Benz went on to make the company the largest in the world in his time, and we use his legacy every single day.

Movie Review 24 Frames Genre: Drama / Fiction Director: Abbas Kiarostami Producer: Charles Gillibert & Ahmad Kiarostami Screenplay: Abbas Kiarostami Camera: Dariush Gorji Zadeh, Peyman Solhi, Delaram Delashob Sound: Ensieh Maleki Release: 23 May, 2017 Duration: 1 hour 24 minutes
24 Frames’ is the last film by the acclaimed poet, photographer and director, Abbas Kiarostami and took the work of three years for its deliverance. It premiered after his death at the 70th Cannes Film Festival. Essentially, this feature film consists of 24 short films of a duration of 4 ½ minutes each. Each film breathes life into one still image, thereby bridging the gap between filmmaking and photography. Kiarostami wished to achieve this through his venture. He had expressed this wish in a 2000 interview. He said, “I want my films to become closer to my photography and more distant from storytelling.” A photograph is just a passing image for us. We do want to know the story behind it, but that’s all. This movie has a terrific digital animation technique that compels us to imagine what occurred prior to and after the shot was taken. While Kiarostami’s work does answer this question to some extent, we are left to tie these strings on our own and get our own individual stories. The first frame opens up with the 16th-century painting, Hunters in the Snow by Pieter Brueghel. We can see dogs and men pondering over a small frozen lake. It’s frozen because winter has come. Gradually we see the additions that were made by Kiarostami. The elements of the actual picture remain intact. Therefore, the first scene establishes the tussle between stillness and movement – a struggle that would go on in the entire movie. In Frame 4 and Frame 13, we hear gunshots. But we never see, as to who fired them. It probably means that those gunshots are our own voices- the one we have buried deep down. We are grappling with our own self and many a time, we lose the battle. Frame 15 is the most interesting of all. We see a group of six people standing on a bridge. They seem frozen in time. They are gazing at the Eiffel Tower while day turns to night, without evoking any sense of movement in them. A street performer passes by, perhaps trying to wake them up from their deep slumber.
It seems to be a far-fetched idea, but this picture could also mean how we as a society, have accepted the various norms and traditions that have been heaped upon us. We have not questioned our adages. When someone does try to question, we comfortably ignore that person, never really bothering to understand the entire concept. We can only speculate, something that Kiarostami would have wanted us to do. By the end of this movie, we know for a fact that our understanding of the cinematic universe has deepened and become more expansive. The magic of Kiarostami has worked wonders. Kiarostami did not know that this was going to be the last film he made. But it seems like a perfect ending to his career. We realize that all along, he was trying to teach us a lesson – a valuable lesson for life. The trailer of the movie begins with his quote that says “I’ve often noticed that we are not able to look at what we have in front of us unless it’s inside a frame.” And this is what he wanted us to know. We are so preoccupied in the constant motion of our lives, that we hardly get the time to appreciate something that is right in front of us. We underestimate its value; till the time it is finally taken away from us. Kiarostami, through this film, is trying to make us understand that sometimes, it is imperative to just stop and look – look around. Beauty is everywhere, in every single intricate detail of this world. It is waiting to be explored by someone who has enough time to spare. One thing all of us must remember is that time waits for no man. In the very wise words of John Keating, “carpe, carpe diem, seize the day boys, make your lives extraordinary.”

Born in a beautiful town in the Central Pacific of Costa Rica called Esparza, Alvaro Cubero is a 28-year-old wildlife photographer, TEDx speaker and a certified naturalist guide, in the tireless search of images that make a visual impact on the people. He moved to San JosĂŠ in 2009 where he trained as an audiovisual producer with the desire to capture that rich biodiversity of Costa Rica. However, he felt that he needed to complement his knowledge about nature with his education. This is how he graduated as a naturalist guide from the National Institute of Biodiversity in 2012. He firmly believes that photography can be a tool for conservation, but the only way to make it is with a powerful message accompanied by a powerful image.

The night sky has awed the human race for millennia. There is nothing more humbling than staring up at the stars, and for those of us bitten by the photography bug, this naturally extends to capturing images of this wonder. Photowalk Dubai titled the contest ‘Heavens Above’ for the month of May 2019 wherein the members were asked to share their best astrophotography images. One of the finest astrophotographer, Fabio Crudele, served as the judge for the contest. Fabio is among the very best astrophotographers and is currently exploring the art of deep space photography. Judge Fabio Crudele had the following to say on the winning image: “The man amidst Mother Earth and above him the endless universe. The trees on the left and right seem to protect the man in an inhospitable desert and at the same time, the trees bend forward as if they were paying homage to the starry sky. The Milky Way between the trees acts as a bridge and is another significant symbol. There is a lot of work involved in planning and executing the perfect position for a composition like this. Also, the proportions and the golden section fits perfectly in this photo. The picture looks very harmonious and exudes photographic poetry”

Fujifilm X-T30 “Tiny, yet powerful” Gear Review
Imagine, you got to go on a photo walk, say to the closest village from your house. Or you have to help a photographer friend do a wedding shoot, or you’re just passionate about shooting fast moving objects. If none of the above attracts you, trust me you’ll just fall for the analog looks of this new, very tiny yet extremely powerful X-T30. Shrinking the phenomenal X-T3 down into a smaller package was always going to be a winning proposition. For several years running, the company has followed up on its flagship X-series mirrorless camera with a more portable (and more affordable) option that still offers many of the best features and capabilities of the flagship. This step-down series is actually Fujifilm’s most popular camera line; the X-T20 introduced in 2017, became the company’s best-selling camera ever. And now its successor is here, and it’s putting its competitors aside. Despite its low price, the X-T30 is a very well-built camera, and its numerous direct controls make it a pleasure to use, the X-T30 is surprising well constructed, although it’s not weather-sealed.It has traded the four-way controller from the X-T20 for a small, somewhat fiddly 8-way joystick and swipe motions on the LCD. Dials for shutter speed and exposure compensation connect you with the camera and make it easy to adjust these settings. The X-T30 has even better autofocus abilities than the X-T3 at the moment. Both cameras can detect faces in a 84 TOOLS
frame, but the X-T30 will actually let you pick which face you want as the primary subject. It can also detect and lock onto faces that are smaller (farther away) in a shot. And apparently black hair could throw off Fujifilm’s face detection before, so that’s been resolved, too. Those are the main improvements, and they’ll be coming to the X-T3 in short order. Otherwise, the X-T30 has the same dependable and fast autofocus system of the pricier camera. It can shoot up to 8 fps in continuous mode with the mechanical shutter, a tad slower than the X-T3’s 11 fps. But both cameras can shoot in a lightning-quick 30 fps sports mode that applies a 1.25x crop. There’s no blackout in the viewfinder when you do this and continuous autofocus keeps running the entire time. Fujifilm’s decision to separate its midrange and upper-tier cameras on physical design rather than technical capability is an interesting one, but one that should make X-T30 owners happy. If you don’t need dual card slots or weather sealing and you can get by with a less robust control layout, you will sacrifice little by choosing the X-T30 over the X-T3. The 26MP X-Trans sensor performs just as we expected, having already tested it in the X-T3. That means excellent dynamic range at the base ISO of 160, producing some of the best RAW files we’ve ever seen from an APS-C sensor. Faiz Sikandar faiz@chiiz.com A freelance wedding, lifestyle photographer & a traveler by choice. He’s more of an offbeat photographer. His images state the simple stories but never fail to bring out the art within them. Faiz is a true professional photographer people always look out for.
Despite the changes to the control layout, we remain wholly impressed with the X-T30. This is an astonishingly capable camera for around 90,000/- INR that only gets better when you pair it with a nice lens. When pushed to its limits in both still photography and video, the X-T30 exactly matches the quality of the 1,50,000/- INR X-T3. Yes, best-quality video requires an external recorder — but the fact a camera in this class can shoot at this level of quality is noteworthy. More importantly, when the excitement over the tech fades away, the X-T30 offers a shooting experience that distills the practice of photography into its most important and engaging aspects. And that is perhaps Fujifilm’s greatest strength. For all the features and power, nothing ever gets in your way and nothing distracts you from the essence of the art. A camera that pours this much tech into a design that allows you to completely forget about it is quite an accomplishment. Being a full-time wedding photographer and filmmaker, I loved using this tiny beast to shoot a pre-wedding in Rishikesh. It helped me think in newer dimensions, and with so many options available within the camera, my team and I were awestruck by the presence of it in our kit-bags.

Marije van Panhuis is a vintage style photographer from the Netherlands who specializes in motorcycles, cars and lifestyle photography. When she bought her first camera, for her, car events were the places to be. As a car enthusiast, she enjoys every moment that happens around her in these events. All the photos she takes have a vintage tone and that’s her characteristic style. She recalls that when she was a little girl, she often played with her big brothers with toy cars. Fascinated by vintage cars, she dreams of having an old American car one day. She likes to photograph women in a beautiful way and is of the opinion that women don’t have to be half naked to be beautiful with a car or a bike. Her thoughts reflect on her photography, making her subjects look strong and beautiful at the same time.
