While bugs and insects may be creepy to some people, they become a muse to a community of photographers, opening up a new world for them. Doing bug and insect photography is like discovering a whole new world where the buzzing, humming and droning, membranous wings and thinnest of filamentary legs awaken the insect movement at dust. Where the bees visit every bloom to the applause of the fluttering foliage. What a pleasure it is to capture these tiny beasts with three pairs of feet making their way over the leaf, the shiny exoskeleton reflecting the sunny rays. With their spectacular colours and structures, insects and bugs make for fascinating subjects in photography. With this thought, Chiiz Magazine Vol. 32 is themed on insect and bug photography. We have brilliant bug and insect photographers like Jeremy Squire who showcase his work on the ‘Mini Wonders’ of nature. His eye for capturing the unique in the ordinary is truly remarkable. Biljana Jurukovski explores her ongoing project ‘Painted Souls’ wherein she looks at alternative cultures and traditions, making portraits of the people of the Surma tribe in Ethiopia. Capturing the vibrancy in their traditional attires and their art of beautification, Bijlana stands out in her portrayal of the tribal culture. This issue also showcases the winning entries of the Exposure International Photo Contest & Exhibition, showing exactly what it takes to be a winner. Also featuring are the best of chiiz.com in this month’s Chiiz Gallery. Our Hall of Fame is adorned with Makeup Artist of the Month, Alok Sha, who showcases his masterpieces, breaking the stereotypes of beauty and spreading the message of ‘Bald is Beautiful’. Madhuri Itagi, an actress and model turned photographer, shares her journey of moving on to the other side of the camera. This is what photography does. It forces you to move forward, to change, to transform. Just like nature. Maybe that is why both work so well when they are merged. Photographing bugs and insects as the marvels of nature opens you to witness nature up close and personal. If it isn’t transformation of our ability to view things differently, what is?

What motivated you to become a photographer and why the focus on macro? I’m not sure how I got started in photography — but I do know that macro is a technical challenge and that I find insect behavior fascinating. Is it enough to have the right equipment in order to be a good macro photographer or are there other areas of knowledge that are critical? Good question. It helps to learn about insect/amphibian behavior. For example, it’s much harder to find frogs during the dry season — wait for the rainy season when they are laying eggs. Many insects (eg: mayflies, many beetles) spend long periods in their larval form and emerge as adults for only a few days to mate before dying. Knowing when they emerge is important. Many insects hide during the day so you need to look for them at night. Climate change, habitat loss, and pesticide/herbicide use are devastating insect populations in large areas of the world. How do you think a photographer can contribute to change the scenario? Put pressure on elected officials for meaningful environmental protection laws. I personally use my Instagram feed and website to draw attention to these issues as do many other macro shooters.

Some photographers love processing their images while others see it as a laborious chore. How do you feel about Photoshop or any of the other editing programs out there?
I love Lightroom because it is a database where I can store all my photos (with backups, of course) and process my images. I have a workflow that keeps things simple. First, I try to shoot as few images as possible — hopefully just two or three per subject. I import them to LR where I use presets to make minimal tweaks to the RAW file. My presets mostly target shadows, highlights, blacks, and whites in different combinations. For macro, I find my Olympus M43 does an extraordinary job of rendering color on macro so I seldom change colors in LR. I occasionally use the radial filter to lighten or darken an area slightly. I do not use Photoshop or any other software. That’s about it! Any words of advice or encouragement to someone starting out with or wanting to improve their macro photography? Take a class if you don’t have a solid knowledge of how aperture, ISO, shutter speed, working distance, and available light interact. Get comfortable with the extremely shallow depth of field we work within macro (often only 1mm or 2mm is sharp). It is very obvious to anybody when an insect has been posed so avoid touching or moving subjects — wait for them to get in a good position. Experiment with fill flash and DIY diffusers. Follow insect shooters on Instagram for tips.

App of the Month Enlight Photofox Category: Photo Editing Rating: 4.6/5 Platform: iOS/Android Cost: Free (In-App Purchases)
Out of an available set of different applications to work your photos and videos with, each of which deserves a separate consideration, Enlight Photofox is perhaps a favourite among the photographers who like to edit photos on their phones. After the first inspection itself, you understand that it is really the best free photo editing app with a wide range of various functions. Of course, when you open it for the first time, the number of menu items and subitems may confuse you. Pop-up tips on the entire display when you start using any of the functions really turn off. But you only need to try to edit a couple of pictures and the app will show you what it is capable of. Of special mention is a convenient and simple function, which, for some reason, is not even present in the most well-known services – the capability to undo one last modification and also redo it. Sometimes it is useful to look at the details of the edited picture. As one of the best photo editing apps, you may begin to edit several photos at the same time and save them as unfinished sessions. If you don’t save them, up to 10 items will still be kept open. If you are happy with your results – it is convenient to share a photo directly from the app in social media, messengers, email and of course, Instagram! Aside from the full set of tools for photo post processing, which is available in the free version, the new app now offers the ability to work with layers.

For example, by touching the Canvas button, you get the option to crop or skew a photo. Layers allow you to combine multiple images in one photo, create an original collage, apply different photo overlay effects and so on. You may edit the layers individually, erase objects from the background, modify the transparency of any of the layers, transform their shape, size and perspective.
Enlight has features for Tilt Shift photos, for that miniaturized look. You can turn your images into artistic paintings or sketches with several variations to choose from. You can type in text in multiple different fonts, add drop shadows and blend in with the background. Biljana sees photography as a medium for communication between people. She has travelled in many countries on five continents through some of the most remote areas and has faced very challenging situations in the quest to photograph lives of tribal people.
Nikon D810
“Painted Souls” is the result of an ongoing passion for exploring alternative cultures and traditions, where the subjects are photographed against a plain background in order to capture the full vibrancy of their traditional dress and showcasing their artistic skills in the area of beautification. People photographed belong to the Surma tribe that resides on the border between Ethiopia and South Sudan and one can claim that Surma are one of the most iconic tribes in Ethiopia. They remain isolated, untouched by foreigners due to the location, lack of amenities and due to tribal conflicts. What makes them so iconic is their imagination and artistic skills when it comes to beautification, decorating and being fashionable in their own way. The Surma tribe use their bodies as a canvas, adorning themselves with pigment gleaned from powdered volcanic rock and natural materials such as flowers, leaves and grasses – as well as animal horns and shells – to create an aesthetic which is at once distinctive and endlessly inventive. Biljana Jurukovski wants to encourage the viewers to look beyond the poverty of many of the areas she travel to and seek to provide a window on a world which is rarely seen or talked about. Her work is constantly striving to empower all of us to see the beauty in our differences and diversity – to show that each of us is unique, and this is to be embraced and celebrated. Movie Review Alfred Stieglitz: The Eloquent Eye Genre:Biography/Documentary IMdB Rating: 7.2/10 Release: 2001 Duration: 1 hour 28 minutes
American Masters is a PBS television series that showcases the life histories and the works of such artists who have impacted the cultural standing of the United States of America in some way or the other. This episode has been taken into consideration, in order to familiarize the audience with one of the most influential and greatest photographers of his time, Alfred Steiglitz. It was due to his tireless efforts for more than 50 years, that photography could be established as an accepted art form, as we know it today. Often called “The Father of Modern Photography”, he believed that “In photography there is a reality so subtle that it becomes more real than reality.” He was not only a photographer but also a gallery owner, publisher and a pioneer in introducing modernism in the 20th century America. Steiglitz’ life coincided with the birth of Modernist Art Movement in America, with him an active defender of such artists. The fascinating part about this documentary is that the director, Adato was roped in because he already had footage of Georgia O’Keeffe, an amazing painter and the wife of Steiglitz, speaking about him and the life they led together. O’Keeffe herself had invited Adato for an interview and shared all her experiences with him and about him, about his struggles, how he showcased the works of modern American artists and what not. The footage has been shot in her house, her garden and her studio, thereby adding an additional layer of originality to it. The initial part of the documentary is set in the late 1880s and we see Steiglitz beginning his journey as a photographer, a field that was very new, less known and unconventional at that point of time. In the early 1890s, Stieglitz can be found in New York City, where he dedicates his career in order to legitimize the existence of photography within the field of fine art. By 1902, Steiglitz along established an organization called in collaboration with Photo Secession fellow photographers. They popularized their publication, “Camera Work”, by word of mouth. Next in the documentary, we witness Steiglitz as a gallery owner, showcasing and promoting works of contemporary artists and photographers. An early exhibit of the work of Picasso at the gallery in 1911, was Picasso’s first solo show in the United States. Prior to this, we see Steiglitz going through an emotionally trying time. With the US being a primary stakeholder in the First World War, his gallery had to be closed down and his work was taken away. During this time, Steiglitz was closely associated with painter Georgia O’Keeffe who was there
for him and helped him come out of this low state. This challenging time brought the two closer together, resulting in a marriage in 1922. O’Keeffe greatly influenced his work and he made somewhere around 300 intimate portraits of hers, and was thereby attributed with the creation of one of the first deeply devotional photographic portrait series. The documentary then shifts to the time of The Great Depression. This was a time when the US was more of a collectivistic culture, which did not align well with Steiglitz anarchical thinking. This further inspired him to develop elegiac portraits of New York City. In 1937, Stieglitz finally put his foot down and abstained from doing any more photography. He died during the year 1946. The documentary also shows many artists whose lives were closely linked with Steiglitz. These include, Edward Steichen, Georgia O’Keeffe, John Marin among others. Each artist has their own voice and speak about those times as well as Steiglitz. The documentary is a learning experience, to each and every member of the audience. There is a takeaway for everyone. For some it can be the history of the American Modern Art tradition, for others, it can be the life of Steiglitz and him as a human with vices and weaknesses, not as the great American hero with all the valor in the world. Old is Gold The Dreamer: Manuel Alvarez Bravo Manuel Alvarez Bravo was the stalwart for the rising art of photography in Latin America of the 20th century. While in his developing years, Bravo came under the influence of an intellectual avant garde which included some famous contemporaries of his time such as Octavio Paz, Diego Rivera as well as Xavier Villaurrutia. Priyanka Modh’s love for photography and desire to pursue it began in 2012 with her experimenting with everything that captured her interest. It was only at a job as a photographer in an NGO where she got to interact with school children, did she realize that her interest lies in capturing expressions and postures of people. She shifted her focus towards wedding and pre-wedding photography where she started a firm called ‘Still Emotional’ with her partner. In the meantime, she got the opportunity to photograph her nephew’s birth and newborn days. It was in that period that she discovered this niche of new-born and maternity photography. Being inclined towards family and children, she found her calling. Since then, she has been in this business with a clientele of over 100 happy and satisfied couples and their little ones.

HAMPI - YOUR PERSPECTIVE, YOUR BELIEF India has a vast and diverse cultural heritage. The grandeur and cultural importance of Hampi’s architectural heritage and its temples have earned it the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage status. Vitthala Temple & Virupaksha temple are some of the well known monuments at Hampi. The Vitthala temple is the most exquisitely detailed structure on the site and represents the pinnacle of Vijayanagara temple architecture. Hampi has also got some beautiful monolith structures like Ugra Narasimha & Badavalinga. When I visited Hampi & stood among its ruins, the monuments seemed eager to tell me the story of the rise, the glorious days & the fall of this lost empire. I was awestruck by the grand architecture of its royal complexes, temples, ancient market streets, pillared halls, mandapas and pushkarnis. Hampi is a paradise for photographers. Every photograph shot at Hampi will tell a different visual narrative. This region also offers incredible landscapes that give innumerable possibilities for photography.

When did you first become interested in photography? What sparked it and when did you decide that it was what you were going to do? I have always been inclined towards Arts. I live for it. When I was pursuing my acting career, I realised, I love being behind the camera more than being in front of it. It all started with nature and travel photography. Being an avid traveler I used to never travel without my third eye (camera). It didn’t take long for me to realise how much I loved capturing beauty and emotions. I later finished my advanced course from ace photographer, Mr Jayesh Sheth. And that’s how my career began. Which camera do you prefer to use while shooting important fashion assignments and why? I use Sony A7riii. I’m totally in love with it. It’s the best pro full-frame mirrorless camera. The 42-megapixel sensor gives amazing picture quality, dual SD card slot is one more perk. Last but not the least, because of its light weight, it’s very easy for me to carry it around. Not only for my assignments, I also carry it along when I’m traveling. I don’t have to think twice about the weight. It’s so handy. You’ve clearly worked with a wide range of models, what tips can you recommend to people looking to expand their portfolio? Expanding the portfolio is very important. It does not necessarily have to be a known model or an actor to shoot
Model - Diandra Soares MUA - Vipul Bhagat Sony A7R III 85mm F/2.5 1/320 ISO80
with. Our creativity and quality is what matters most. So one should keep shooting as much as possible, put your heart and soul into it and come up with creative concepts. Select the best of work and display it. What do you consider to be the main difference between yourself and others like you who have failed to get to where you are? I think it’s consistency. Being a newcomer myself, I still have miles to go. None of my work ever satisfies me. That urges me to be my own competitor, and ruthless critic for self. It’s important to grow your knowledge and experience horizontally while building the portfolio and profile vertically. You have a lot of following on social media platforms. What tips can you give to budding photographers who want to get their work seen like that? I think that nowadays, social media is a huge platform for our work to get noticed. However, it’s not the most important thing. There are many great photographers who don’t use Instagram or any social media to showcase their work. Still, I would suggest to keep posting your good work. It is motivating at times to see our work being appreciated. Photography became a serious hobby for Robert Maxim in late 2012. His first and abiding love is studio art nude with minimal background and props but more recently he has added location art nude with its different challenges. For him, the secret lies in the collaborative relationship with brilliant creative models. Self-Portrait by Sebastian Cartier
