Lifestyle photography is storytelling and capturing the everyday lives of the people, objects, and places. It can be considered as an amalgamation of the whole spectrum of photographic genres, the portraits, people, families, children, weddings, places, food, etc. Elliott Erwitt firmly believes that “photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.” Lifestyle photography is an infusion of both authenticity and orchestration. The idea is to reflect the natural elements of the subject through the process of staging. The photography of the subject can also be captured without staging if the photographer wants to capture originality. Most of the themes revolving around lifestyle involve natural light. Subjects like family or baby photography, street, food, and travel or landscape cover the essence of realism while the subject matters like fashion and portraiture are mounted and staged. Using different fundamentals in an image with different categories, colors and textures create visual interest which forms the backbone of lifestyle photography. This issue of Chiiz looks into lifestyle photography as a genre with photographers like Iwona Podwalna, who mostly keeps her focus on the family and interior photography and Kristina Makeeva who creates dreamlike magic art. A unique thing about lifestyle photography is that the conceptualized idea of every photographer is reflected in their images and that becomes their identity. Like Ali Alsulaiman’s travel photography captures the true colors of places with allurement that only our eyes can see. Lifestyle photographs are more than just happy pictures. The arrangement and juxtaposition of contrasting elements and the relationship between them show how all the parts of the photographs form a coherent whole. It’s about every little moment in our everyday lives and how we convert those moments into artwork. Lifestyle photos draw us in and make us wish we were part of the scene. Delve into this genre through this copy and find yourselves in visions only imagined.

determining the light falloff or to help with focusing, and also during closeup and macro shots where minimal flash power may still be too much. BTW, the minimal flash power in this is 1/256 vs 1/128 in other speed lights. The Modelling LED lamp can be increased in power in 10 increments. • There is a Channel scan feature that lets you know the safe channels to use when there are multiple photographers shooting with similar lights in the area. • The battery is a new Li-ion polymer 2600mah battery that can last more than 480 shots in full power. Typically, these Li-ion batteries powered flashes easily last a day’s wedding shoot for me. V1 comes with a compact USB-C charger. Personal Experience as a user: Godox V1 flash head has a magnetic rim and can be used with the AKR1 accessory kit which allows many creative possibilities. The flash recycle time is supposed to be around 1.3 seconds in full power which is great! Although, during my first shoot with V1, when I used this flash in full power for a long duration, the battery heated up and the recycle time became much longer. Although I didn’t understand what was happening at that time, I later came to understand that this is because Godox has put in thermal protection limit to 30 full-power flashes and beyond that, it takes longer to fire until the battery cools down.
GODOX V1 Review I have been using Godox V1 in portrait-shoots and a lot of fastpaced South Indian wedding shoots since it’s launch and here are my thoughts on this product. Prior to the launch of V1, AD200Pro was my favorite flash, especially for Wedding shoots. V1 now comes a close second. The combination of both these flashes and LC500 LED light sticks has been my go-to Lighting Gear for Weddings. The following are the important features and specifications: • The biggest difference in this speed light to others like the Godox V860II is also the most talked-about and anticipated feature of V1 – its round head. Roundhead feels the most natural for an external light although not a very common feature among speed-lights. Prior to this the pocket strobe Godox AD200 also came up with a round-head attachment. The light falloff from a round head is a lot more gradual, the spread is even and the light quality pleasing. • The biggest difference between the AD200‘s H200R and V1, however, is that – V1 being a speed light has a fresnel head and is zoomable. By changing the zoom on V1, like in any conventional speed light, you can control the light spread and reach. By setting a longer focal length, you can direct the light beam to be narrower but reach much further ahead. Conversely, you can set the wider focal length to spread the light beam across a wider (and shorter) region. But the H200R is a bulb in a reflector like a traditional strobe but with a diffuser plate on the front. It does not have zoom capabilities. • V1 is a 75Ws flash with a Guide Number of 92 ft (at 100ISO and 50mm). The build quality of V1 is good and sturdy. The screw lock has been changed to a flip-lock with a switch which makes it so much easier and faster. The screw lock was always slightly uncomfortable for me as sometimes I wouldn’t lock it thoroughly on camera and the contacts would be loose. • The power increments can be made in 0.1 steps now. And for quick adjustments, you can also change the same in full stops making it quicker to set up the flash power. There is also a TCM (TTL-convert-Manual) Mode which allows you to switch from TTL to an equivalent reading in Manual with the press of a button. • There is also a Modelling LED lamp that is new to this speed light. In low-light scenarios, it can come in handy for 26 TRIGGER
One minor design flaw I noticed is in the battery compartment. The battery slides into place through a hole in the flash. It slides out of the other side with the press of a button. I had accidentally pressed that button while shooting, and the battery had partially slid out of its place. Although the flash continued firing, this can become quite irksome. Hope Godox switches back to the previous battery compartment design in the next version. Here are some pictures from my very first shoot with V1. During my Portrait Photography Workshops, participants usually ask me about how they can get started without investing too much money in Lighting equipment. If you are not a commercial photographer, you can manage with smaller flashes like V1. Here, in this shoot, I purposely didn’t carry my AD200Pro and AD600Pro, so that I can avoid the temptation of switching to powerful equipment. All the images are lit with V1 as the key light. Hope you like the images. V1 is a great buy for photographers who would like a flash for both on-camera and off-camera use. Direct modifiers like the AK-R1 can benefit out of its round head and produce great light, and even spread with a gradual falloff. With a simplified menu, it makes learning OCF easier for new lighting enthusiasts.

WONDROUS MAGIC-ART Kristina Makeeva
38 FEATURE
Kristina Makeeva is a photographer based in Moscow, got a hold on camera at the age of 16. She is working on a global project called “Simple Magic Things where she looks for magic in everyday life. A project with dresses is a way to show how people and their creations can organically fit into the beauty of this world. Her favorite countries are the United Kingdom and New Zealand. She tries to implement her ideas inspired by her dreams and the process goes on with every new dream. Everyone is surrounded by exactly the amount of beauty that he/she can see.
Your pictures have a very unique and mesmerizing style. When and how did you discover ‘magicart’ as your signature style? I seem to have discovered it in myself from the very beginning. At the age of 14, I started working in Photoshop, shooting at 16. And I created my worlds from the very beginning. That is how I started and never looked back. I have always wanted to broaden the horizon in what I do. That is, give layers and work on every little detail and make it unusual from the other. Can you describe the elements that are essential to you while creating your images? Rhythms and accuracy are very essential to me while I’m creating my concept. It is important to maintain a balance of both to get a well-defined picture. The efficiency is important to depict the reality of the photograph and the flow of the image is required to show the adaptation of the changes the place or the subject might be going through. And one needs to be a visionary to capture and maintain a balance like that. That is what and how I hope to represent my images. How are you able to create and maintain the essence of both the place and your subjects in the picture? It is important to understand what I create as I feel. There is no logic for me, although for sure someone sees this as a pattern. What I try to do and create is something more abstract. Making something ordinary look magical is a task I believe. And the efforts put
in the process to show that, is what I consider to be abstract and unusual. You traveled to Lake Baikal, a place worthy of your imagination. Can you share the experience of what that place felt like? Baikal is a very spiritual place. And even the most avid urban gossipers will feel it. He draws from the depths of the soul all that is in it at the moment. The connection I feel with the place is what is reflected in my images. Hence, that is what I try to create and show through my images of Lake Baikal. It’s nothing but the beauty of connection and spiritual energy it holds for me. Can you give an insight into how you select the theme for your images? Again, the feeling. What I want at the moment is what I am doing. It’s important for an artist or a photographer to be able to feel that and print it on the paper. That is how it starts and every art in the world is created whether it’s writing or painting or designing or photographing. And one shouldn’t be afraid of creating bad art, because everyone in the beginning does. One needs to believe that no art or image is bad. It’s just that the perceptions are different, everyone in the world has a different way of perceiving things. That is how I started and discovered my signature style and theme. Simran Kaur simran@chiiz.com Born and brought up in Delhi, 19-year old Simran is a trained in graphic designer from Delhi. She enjoys sketching and loves to explore different things. Old is Gold Female IRA Fighter, the 1970s The particular photograph was clicked by an Irish photographer named Colman Doyle, in the 1970s, in West Belfast, Northern Ireland. The woman in the picture is an IRA fighter and can be seen carrying an ArmaLite AR-18 assault rifle. Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) was a paramilitary force that sought to end British rule in Northern Ireland and bring independence with the goal of forming a unified Ireland. The trouble in Northern Ireland began in the late 1960s and continued until the development of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998. AR-18 was procured by the IRA from the US in the early 1970s and it became one of the most unbroken and valuable possessions of the IRA armed campaign. AR-18 rifles became a very significant symbol for the IRA fighters. Even though the weapon was designed and produced in America, it never served in any military service. Its production license was sold to companies in Japan and England. IRA preferred this weapon more than any other because of its capability of rapid-fire. It was small in size and very easy to conceal because of its folding stock. The weapon was nicknamed ‘TheWidowmaker’. Ireland was divided into two groups of females. There were women who were a part of or supported the IRA and then there were women who wanted the continuation of the British Rule in the region. Not only women, but it was also a dispute between the overall public in general. A dispute between the Unionists, favoring the continuation of British rule and the Republicans wanting a united Ireland. The conflict revolutionized the exploitation of women as propaganda used by the rule during the time, preventing them from taking part in any paramilitary services and firing. A few examples like using visual imagery of bombings and explosions, murals representing the deceased women in the war, are the best way of explaining the implantation of the British force. It became a compulsion for the English rulers to use this propaganda because there were more and more Republican women involved in the dispute. They were mostly ignored in the security checking so it was easy for them to hide weapons.
There is still not much information available on the picture. It is still unclear whether this picture was staged or not. Some believe the former while there are some who stand with the latter as there are many versions of stories built-up from the picture from various sources. Movie of the month War Photographer Running Time: 96 minutes Genre: Documentary
“If your pictures aren’t good enough, you’re not close enough.”- Robert Capa The opening scene of the movie featured this famous quote by another war photographer Robert Capa which explained the entire context of the movie. The movie takes us to the world of American war photographer James Nachtwey. Nachtwey put out his whole heart in this movie sharing his experience as a war photographer and representing himself on behalf of the victims suffering from the war. He credits his subjects for the work he has done, finally showcasing his years worth of hard work in a private exhibition. He believes that establishing a rapport with the subject is very important in the time of conflict. The film gets intense when the camera shows the corpses lying around the houses with broken rooftops. It has managed to show the true emotions of the war-stricken areas and the people residing in and affected by it. Malnourishment, poverty, homelessness, disability are certainly other topics that are being discussed in the movie, as a result of the war. Nachtwey believes that through his pictures he can tell stories to people and let them know that nothing good comes out of violence and inhumanity. He wanted to show the world about the struggle of the affected victims. “For me, the strength of photography lies in its ability to evoke humanity. If war is an attempt to negate humanity, then photography can be perceived as the opposite of war.” He understands that a war might start with some internal or external political conflicts until you realize it is a war against people not leaders, ruling the nation. It is important to understand the propaganda brought either by a political party/ leader or an angry mob or public.
By the end of the movie, Nachtwey says he is not gonna stop being a photographer as he is never completely satisfied with what he does. He’s gonna continue gathering stories of the people the world needs to know. In the documentary, he also urges the public to get out of the ‘escapist’ society and see the real world out there because there are people who need help and love to carry on, be it without their loved ones or with them. There were various scenes in the movie that were shot with ‘micro-cam’ mounted on Nachtwey’s SLR camera, which was used in the documentary allowing us to see the photographer’s perspective of the subject. The documentary won the Peabody Award in 2003 and was nominated for an Academy Award and The Emmys. It has received accolades in various other international film festivals.
