Firle Place – A Magical Event

F

irle Place Country Show and Horse Trials is a magical event with a host of activities from equestrian sports to craft displays and countryside activities. Organised by the team at BEDE Events, Firle Place takes place on May 14 and 15, and is also the most southern venue and the first British Eventing Area Festival in the calendar. Held in the South Downs National Park in the village of Firle, Sussex, the idyllic Firle Estate was used as a primary location in the new film adaptation of Jane Austen’s beloved classic Emma which starred Anya Taylor-Joy, Bill Nighy, Johnny Flynn and Miranda Hart. The Firle Estate sits in the heart of the South Downs National Park and is just 60 miles from the centre of London. It incorporates several villages and farms spread over rolling hills, with Firle a thriving rural community set in one of the most picturesque parts of the United Kingdom. From craft stalls to dog shows and dog

agility, terrier racing, gun dog displays and a wide range of artisan food and drink stalls, the event is one not to be missed in the south of the country. If you are a classic car fan, Brighton SexMogs will be in attendance with their Classic Morgan Cars. A fantastic funfair will include bungy trampolines, a small children’s carousel, mini bumper cars and an inflatable slide if you’re looking for some good old fashioned fun.

The hugely popular Dog and Duck display run by the legendary Chris Jupp with his sheepdog and ducks will also be on hand to entertain the crowds. Said Stuart Buntine of BEDE: “We are very much looking forward to the event and it is great to have all the additional activities running this year alongside the horse trials.

Area Championships will be held for BE80(T), BE80(T) Open, BE90, BE90 Open, BE100 and BE100 Open levels. Firle will also include regional final qualifications at BE80(T), BE90 and BE100 with the top percentage of combinations going on to compete at the BE90 and BE 100 Championships held at Badminton and the BE80(T) Championship.

What makes your business stand out from other businesses offering similar services or products? We are one big family, and endeavour through all possible channels to make our customers feel a part of that too. We also pride ourselves on giving back by supporting several local horsey and non-horsey charities. Giving away anything from feed and bedding to competition prizes or support with monetary donations. We also offer support within the equestrian community, backing a local para dressage rider, Amanda Shirtcliffe and offering out an annual Bursary Programme to amateur riders.

What are your customers saying about you? What keeps them coming back? We are not shy in sharing that we regularly get positive feedback from customers via social media 'shout outs', emails and Google reviews. Our customer's comments mainly focus around our quick delivery and helpful and friendly customer service. In fact, this most recent Google review says it all: “Hands down the best supplier of equestrian and country, went above and beyond for me, highly recommend.” L.Mules.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A RACECOURSE VET

W

by Naomi de Pennington MA VetMB CertEM(IntMed) MRCVS

e are proud at Avonvale to provide the veterinary team who look after the racehorses on race days at Warwick Racecourse. But what does this involve? Read on to find out more about the duties of a Racecourse Veterinary Surgeon. At every racecourse on raceday, there is a veterinary team made up of both a team of Racecourse Veterinary Surgeons and a British Horseracing Association (BHA) vet. Avonvale team in the preparade ring

The BHA vet’s duties are mainly regulatory – overseeing the welfare of the horses on the course, and upholding the standards and rules of racing such as ensuring all horses are appropriately vaccinated and free from infectious disease, carrying out pre-race examinations, and overseeing postrace testing for prohibited substances. The Racecourse Veterinary Surgeons (RVS) are a team of two (in the case of flat racing) or three (in the case of jumps racing) highly experienced equine vets employed by the racecourse to provide immediate first aid and veterinary treatment for racehorses, ensuring any horses that are injured receive prompt and appropriate attention. In order to qualify as a RVS, vets must be more than 5 years qualified, work in solely or mainly equine practice and undertake an intensive training course, run by the Association of Racecourse Veterinary Surgeons (ARVS) which they must then attend at least every 5 years. The team is led by a Senior Veterinary Surgeon (SVS) who will have many years of experience of racecourse veterinary work. On raceday, we must be at the racecourse at least one hour before the first race. We ensure our treatment boxes (one at the stables and one at the pre-parade ring) are fully stocked, collect our radios and racecards from the weighing room, and grab a quick bite to eat. We then catch up with the BHA vet, to find out if there are any horses which may require special attention, such as horses which have a history of overheating in past races or horses reported to be ‘poor-movers’. 08

Show Special 2022

We make contact with the horse ambulance drivers, with whom we work very closely. They will collect the case containing the compression boot and splints from the veterinary treatment box to have in the ambulance. This is a kit containing a newly designed boot, closely resembling an equine ski boot, which can be quickly applied track-side to horses with lower limb injuries, in particular suspected fractures, to aid their safe transportation off the course. The clerk of the course, who is responsible for coordinating all the teams on raceday will run through a radiocheck to make sure we are all in communication. We gather in the parade ring as the horses are brought in and led round. As the jockeys come out, the team splits, with two vets taking to their cars to follow the runners in the convoy, and one vet remaining in the paddock until all of the jockeys have mounted and the horses are on their way to ‘post’ (the start). One of the vets will be on standby at the start in case of any incidents such as a horse getting kicked, or a jockey reporting any concerns. In these circumstances the starter will ask the veterinary surgeon to examine the horse in question and decide whether it is fit to start the race. The BHA veterinary officials have a register of horses who are noted to be ‘bad movers’ and any horses that are reported to have a poor action will be assessed on course before being allowed to run. When the flag drops, the convoy of emergency vehicles and groundstaff

follow the horses around the centre of the course. The convoy includes two veterinary surgeons, doctors, two ambulances and groundstaff. The horse ambulance remains stationed in the centre of the track ready to be deployed if necessary. If there is an incident such as a horse fall, it will be called out on the radio by the first emergency responder to witness it. One of the vets and one of the ambulances will then stop immediately to attend, whilst the rest of the convoy continues alongside the galloping horses. Screens are positioned at strategic points around the course, as well as being carried in the groundstaff vehicle, and where there is a significant incident involving horse or jockey, these will be erected around the casualty. When screens are erected around a horse, this does not in any way indicate that a horse has been fatally injured, but it allows the vet to assess the horse calmly. If necessary, the groundstaff will erect bypass signs to divert the race if another circuit is due to pass the site of the incident. In the vast majority of cases where a horse has fallen, they will simply be winded and need some time to recover before being encouraged to their feet. The vet will carry out an assessment of the horse’s cardiovascular status (the colour of their membranes and pulse and heart rate) and their skeletal system (including examining their neck and limbs) before deciding that it is safe to encourage them to their feet. Horses with injuries will be transported by ambulance to the vet box at the stables for further

Post race examination

assessment and treatment, using the air boot or splints where necessary. Oxygen is carried by the vets on course to provide to the horses where indicated. In the rare incidents where a horse has sustained a catastrophic fracture, and there is no possibility they can be saved, euthanasia is performed by lethal injection. If a horse needs to be transported by ambulance back to the vet box for further assessment and treatment such as flushing a wound or applying a support bandage, the third veterinary surgeon will meet the ambulance there on arrival. We have one of our state of the art portable, wireless Xray machines onsite for the duration of racing, should there be any need to carry out further assessment of an injury. Onward transport by horse ambulance to our veterinary clinic or the trainer’s vet practice can then be organised where necessary. When the horses have finished their race, the vets will watch each horse as it enters the paddock or winner’s enclosure, looking for any small wounds or any signs of lameness. These may then be dealt with at the vet box at the unsaddling area or if necessary taken to the treatment box at the stables for further assessment.

Fully equipped horse ambulances driven by highly experienced personnel form an essential part of the emergency response team

Vets and groundstaff are also on standby to attend any horses that are showing signs of heat exhaustion. Particularly on warm days, but even on relatively mild days, some horses are prone to overheating, which can make them wobbly and uncomfortable. Those horses which have shown this problem in the past are highlighted to the vet team by the BHA vet pre-race for careful scrutiny post-race. The treatment involves rapid and Fracture support kit rigorous cooling by application of buckets of water, along with administration of painkillers where necessary. Trainers with any concerns about their horses postrace can request a vet to attend at any point by speaking to the racecourse staff at the stables, who will immediately radio for a vet to attend. Trainers who feel that their horses did not run well can also request to have the horse ‘scoped’ post-race. This is an endoscopic examination of the horse’s airway carried out by the racecourse vets, looking for evidence

of infection or of bleeding into the airway of the horse, which can sometimes happen when horses are galloping and jumping, and contribute to a poor performance. Any treatments given to horses at the racecourse are documented on official forms, copies of which are given to the trainer of the horse and the BHA vet. At the end of racing, the vet team will ensure that there are no more horses requiring attention before catching up with the horse ambulance team and the clerk of the course for a debrief. The smooth running of a race meeting requires well-coordinated teamwork between groups of highly experienced and well trained individuals, all working together to ensure the welfare of the racehorses and jockeys is always paramount.

A DAY AT COCKLEBARROW RACES by Zoe Phipps

C

ocklebarrow Races is an annual event which takes place in January. The course was originally in Heythrop, but moved to Cocklebarrow in 2014. The Cocklebarrow course was built by Johnny Wills, John Phillips and Charlie Brooks. The day sees over 2000 visitors from across the UK with the majority coming from Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Warwickshire. It is a real family day out, with many attractions beside the horse racing. Starting a 10:30am, the racing began with three pony races. followed at 12pm with the horse racing; eight races with a total of seventy-three horses starting. The first race was The Hunt Members which had five runners with two pulling up. The race was won by Raven’s Tower, ridden by Miss Megan Fox and trained by Ben Pauling. The second race of the day was the Restricted. This had eight runners, but two pulled up and one fell. The race was won by Drumlee Getaway ridden by James King and trained by Francesca Poste. The third race was the Pproa Club Members Conditions (level 2) Novice Riders which had fourteen runners, although three pulled up. The race was won by Stacks Mountain ridden by Miss G. Knowles and trained by Fergal O’Brien. The fourth race was the Ladies Open. This had nine runners with one faller and one unseated rider. It was won by Southfield Theatre ridden by Miss L. Bradstock and trained by Sara Bradstock. The fifth race was the Lord Ashton of Hydes Cup Men’s Open Race 12ST5LB which had eight runners. Of the eight, two pulled up and one fell. The last race was the Maiden (DIV 2) 7YO&UP which had eleven runners; three of which pulled up and two were unseated. The race was won by ‘Whatya On About’ ridden by James King and trained by Anabel Murphy. In between the races and after the racing had finished there was still plenty to do. There was terrier racing to watch and a shopping hall that joins onto the family picnic tent. The shopping hall had lots of small local businesses, with a range of items for sale, such as clothes, baskets, jewellery and much more. As well as the shops inside there were plenty of trade stands outside serving food and drink, selling clothes and dog accessories, hot tubs and plenty of

other products. The terrier racing wasn’t just for terriers however. There were four classes; terriers, lurchers, beagles and also an ‘anything’ class. Next to the Terrier Racing was The Tough Farmer Challenge. This had three classes; the Ladies Open, the Men’s Open and the Budding Young Farmers. The aim of the race was to compete doing everyday farm tasks, such as moving a 300kg tractor tracks, moving and stacking hay bales, carrying oil drums, throwing beer kegs and pulling a pick up, finishing with a pint of locally made beer! There was a Junior Tough Farmer and a Senior, the Senior competition was fought between the

jockeys, farmers, Heythrop ladies netball and celebrity teams. This year’s winners were the reigning champions the Heythrop ladies netball team. The Royal Agricultural University beagles paraded and racegoers were able to meet the hounds after the parade. The young racegoers were also well catered for with a bouncy castle, a bungee run and a mechanical bull, which was popular with all ages. In conclusion, the Cocklebarrow Point-to-Point was a lovely family day out and a definite diary entry for 2023!

ith 40 runners in seven races, the Bicester with Whaddon Chase point-to-point at Edgcote on Sunday 3rd April had the highest turnout of the weekend’s eight fixtures and racegoers were treated to some fine performances, with a Cheltenham disappointment returning to form, a popular veteran landing the spoils and the racecourse debut of a potential future star. The feature race, the Equine Bio Genie Edgcote Gold Cup Mixed Open Race over three miles and five furlongs, saw four go to post and was won by Bradley Gibbs on Premier Magic, who was pulled up in the Cheltenham Foxhunters last time out. Held-up early, the nine-year-old made smooth progress through the field on the final circuit, led six out and scored comfortably by three lengths from early leader Vivaldi Collonges. Outsider Ange Des Malberaux was four lengths third ahead of the winner’s market rival Kalabaloo, for whom the ground was too firm. “His run at Cheltenham frightened him,” said Bradley afterwards. “He normally jumps off and travels well but it took me a circuit and a half to get going today. He would have been more impressive if he hadn’t run at the Festival and he was just better than the others here.” Bradley’s partner Claire Sherriff told me, “We thought he’d be in the frame at Cheltenham but he barely went a circuit. We then took him schooling at Maisemore Park last week to teach some youngsters and he nearly stopped at the first – he hated Cheltenham that much. His jumping doesn’t normally miss a beat but it wasn’t perfect today, so it was nice to see him keep going. We might go for the fourmiler at the evening Hunter Chase meeting – he’ll stay all day – but will it scare him again? He’s a good pointer,

12

Show Special 2022

and this might be his game.” Claire, who is expecting the couple’s first child in July – “It’s a boy and we don’t have a name yet, but we might call him Magic after today!” – confirmed that their other stable star Highway Jewel won’t run again this season but will be back next year. Bradley completed a double – after a crunching fall on his first ride of the day – in the two miles five furlongs Bicester Motion Restricted. Just three faced the starter here and The Jolly Pot attempted to make all, as he had done when winning last time, but Bradley on Dawnie Boy tracked him throughout the final circuit and took the lead three out. He was joined by favourite By Appointmentonly, going better, at the penultimate fence (where The Jolly Pot fell when beaten) but the challenger made a mistake, giving the lead back and – though By Appointmentonly rallied up the run-in – Dawnie Boy held on to score by a rapidly-decreasing neck. Claire explained why the progressive eight-year-old had been off the track so long between scoring at Barbury in December 2020 and reappearing at Larkhill in February. “He had a small operation to remove a floating bone in his knee, then fractured another bone, was out for the season and we couldn’t rush him back. He wants softer ground,” she continued, “And that’s probably it for the season now, but you never know. We’ll see the best of him next year over three miles on soft ground.” It was Bradley’s 23rd winning ride of the season and he has trained 18. “I couldn’t be happier with the way things are going,” he admitted. “Dawnie Boy wants every yard of three miles, but we came here because we knew the

ground would be nice and it’s a stiff track. I didn’t realise how close the second horse was two out but, once I heard him, I got him going again!” Also in double form were Francesca and Charlie Poste’s Station Yard Racing, whose brace was sealed when 13-year-old Summer Sounds, number 13 on the card and achieving his 13th pointing success (lucky for some!) won the eight-runner Vindis Bentley Novice Riders Race. Given a great front-running ride by Amber JacksonFennell, he was headed at the last by Skipthecuddles and looked booked for second but didn’t give up and forced his head in front again just before the line and was given the verdict by a neck. Craigmor, always prominent but never looking likely to land a blow, was eight lengths third. “He’s such an incredible horse,” said joint-owner Jenny Jackson-Stops, whose son James won four on the horse before he retired. “We weren’t expecting much when we got him, and we were lucky to find out how he needs to race – he has to front-run. It’s the first time Amber’s ridden him – I was told she was a tenacious jockey, and the pair didn’t want to be beaten, did they?” Fellow owner Graham Fisher added, “He needed the run at Shelfield Park a fortnight ago – it was his first outing since Cheltenham last year – and I was surprised today didn’t come too quickly for him. He looked like he’s still enjoying himself, he loves ground on the fast side of good, and he’ll probably have two or three more runs this season.” Winning jockey Amber was scoring for the third time in points – all this season – and the fourth overall. “I joined Francesca and Charlie in December,” she confirmed, “And they’ve given me

opportunities, so it’s been a good decision to focus on pointing. I’m lucky to be in their yard and I’ve also got four horses at home.” Talking through the race, she said, “It sounded like there would be a lot of pace on, but I knew he’d keep galloping, so I kept him in his comfort zone. He stays and gallops and the track suits and he was getting tired when headed at the last but fought back gamely.” As for her own plans for the rest of the season, “To keep fit and well and to keep getting in the frame. If I ride another winner, I need to decide whether to keep going or stay as a novice for next year.” Francesca and Charlie had earlier won the opening race on the card, the Gade Homes Tim Price Memorial Hunt Members Race, with the progressive Kaproyale. Four of the seven entries took part and the long odds-on favourite, in the hands of champion jockey James King, scored by an easy four lengths having been held up in last as Accord set the early pace. However, when James pressed the button, the response was immediate, and he never looked in danger after taking the lead three out. Long-time leader Accord

kept going to dead-heat for second with Earlshill. Kaproyale is owned by a partnership of Denise Reynolds – whose husband Nick is a former Master of the Bicester with Whaddon Chase – ex-rider Katie Sunderland (many readers will remember the likes of Maid To Match and Sperrin View) and Francesca’s father Chris Nimmo and Denise told me afterwards, “He’s my first pointer. He came from Olly Murphy, who’s a great friend of Charlie’s, and he wanted the horse to go to friends. He’s won five times from six races and we’re lucky to have James riding.” Katie added, “Having to watch the horse running is so much more nervewracking than riding! I ride him at home every day – he’s my baby – and I’ve always wanted to win our Members race.” Plans could include the end of season Maiden Hunter Chase at Cartmel, which Chris has won twice before, once allegedly landing a massive gamble in the process! “I could have done with them going quicker early on,” admitted James,

moving on to 26 for the season. However, he wouldn’t be drawn on the chances of retaining his title, saying only, “It’s too early to say if I can catch Will Biddick, but this time last year, I hadn’t yet ridden a winner.” Gina Andrews continues her relentless pursuit of a record ninth lady riders title and she won two of the three Maiden races on the card. Although only three ran in the four-year-old only Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Early NH Racing Initiative Maiden Race, they represented some of the leading stables in the country and all look to have the potential to do well under rules. It was won by No Questions Asked who – apart from a mistake five out – jumped more fluently than his two rivals. Disputing the lead throughout with As Known As, who had been backed into favouritism, No Questions Asked took advantage of his market rival’s novicey jumping and was unchallenged to score by eight lengths. The third runner, Mugs Of Champagne, also made mistakes and came down at the last when second. “He’s a proper horse,” beamed winning

trainer Tom Ellis, who runs G & T Racing with his wife Gina. “His work’s been good at home and he’s always shown he has talent. He jumped green and the slow pace played into our hands. As I’ve always said, it’s hard to run young horses against experienced ones, as they can go well at home but be clueless on the racecourse. He’s up there with the best of our four-yearolds,” continued Tom of No Questions Asked, “And definitely in the A-team. Hopefully we can send him to the Aintree Sales later this week.” The trainer was moving on to 46 for the season, five short of Jack Barber’s record of 51, but refused to countenance beating that total, telling me, “Go for the record? Let’s worry about that another day.” “He was quite green and having a good look around, but was always travelling strongly,” said Gina. “I knew we were going well after the first circuit.” Gina’s second victor came on Magnetic Zero in the Spratt Endicott Maiden Race for five-year-olds and upwards, in which eight ran. A welcome success for a smaller yard on a day dominated by the big guns, she was continuing her successful association with Nigel Padfield. The five-year-old had finished a close second on his British pointing debut and was favourite to go one better. Always prominent, he led going 14

out on the final circuit and – despite being headed by the well-back All The Ammunition two out – led again at the last and won by three-quarters of a length. Equus Flight, rear early, ran on for two-and-three-quarter lengths third. Nigel, who trains four horses at Abridge in Essex – and is the only trainer I know of within the M25 – was enjoying his second success of the season and told me of Magnetic Zero, “David Phelan found him for me – he was trained by Sam Curling in Ireland – and he ran very well at Guilsborough, where he was just nudged out, and this track suited him better. We’ll try to win a Restricted, then put him away, but he won’t run on anything firmer than good.” Ten – the biggest field of the day - lined up for the Jockey Club Mares Maiden, sponsored by Savills and it went the way of Scorpion Lady, trained by Alan Hill and ridden by Harry Myddleton for his father Guy. Four-year-old newcomer Sweet Talking was made favourite but ran green and pulled up three out and the race looked likely to go the way of the fancied Imperial Pride when she quickened clear five out. However, Scorpion Lady always had the leader in her sights, jumped to the front at the second last and came home by five lengths, with Queen Kalamba making late progress for six lengths third.

Winning owner Guy Myddleton, based on the Cheshire/Wales border, explained why his horses are with Alan Hill in Oxfordshire this year. “We used to have them with Oliver Greenall but Harry’s at Oxford Brookes University so we sent them to Alan so he can ride out there. We bought Scorpion Lady from Ireland – she wasn’t very expensive – with another Maiden to give Harry more experience. She ran well at Kingston Blount, surprising us, and the quick ground here suited us.” The trainer’s wife Lawney added of the winning rider, “Harry’s improved. He’s a good horseman, has a natural eye for a stride and he listens!” It was a tenth career success – and third this season – for Harry, who said of Scorpion Lady, “She carried on going whenever I asked her. I thought I’d have to go round the outside, but she outjumped the favourite, so I didn’t. She enjoyed the ground and enjoyed jumping.” The 21-year-old has no plans to turn professional, telling me, “I want to be a very good amateur and ride as many winners as I can. I’d love to compete in the Aintree or Cheltenham Foxhunters and a winner in one of those would probably make me hang up my boots. I’ve had three rides over jumps under rules and used to ride on the flat when I was younger…and lighter!”

aura Collett realised a childhood dream as she won Badminton Horse Trials, presented by Mars Equestrian, after a superb performance on Karen Bartlett and Keith Scott’s London 52. Laura’s finishing score of 21.4 ; she added a mere 0.4 of a show jumping time penalty to her dressage mark, resulting in a record completion score for Badminton. Runner-up Ros Canter, the only rider to finish on her dressage score, showed she has another world champion in the making with the 10-year-old Lordships Graffalo, while Oliver Townend cemented his world number one position with third and fifth places on Swallow Springs and Ballaghmor Class respectively, each of his greys hitting a fence apiece. It was the first British one-two-three since Pippa Funnell led William Fox-Pitt and Leslie Law 20 years ago in 2002, and Laura Collett revealed that Pippa’s win on Supreme Rock had been her childhood inspiration. “I was going round the cross-country on my aunt’s shoulders and I wanted to be Pippa Funnell winning Badminton”, she said. When Laura entered the arena, she had the luxury of a fence in hand over Ros, but the pressure was huge. “That horse is amazing”, she said of her Tokyo Olympic gold medallist. “He jumped his socks off. I couldn’t see a distance anywhere but he just got higher and higher”.

fourth with just one pole down. “I think that’s the best ‘Tilly’ has ever jumped. She left her heart out on the cross country course so I was a bit worried showjumping, but shouldn’t have been”, Piggy said.

Ros was full of praise for her new superstar who was contesting his first five-star. “Walter’s eyes were on stalks when we arrived but he enjoyed every part of it, especially the prize giving. He will have learned so much in the last few days”.

David Doel, who lives just twenty minutes down the road from Badminton, had a dream debut finishing in sixth place on Galileo Nieuwmoed with a double clear. Kitty King, a member of last year’s winning European Championships Team, was seventh on Vendredi Biats.

The 2019 Badminton winners, Piggy March and the gallant 17-year-old mare Vanir Kamira, set the early standard on the cross-country, finishing an honourable

ninth on Mai Baum. Britain’s Richard Jones and Alfies Clover rounded up the top 10. After a gap of three years, support for the event was huge: 180,000 visitors attended over the four days, and the many tradestands did a roaring trade, delighted to be back.

“It was everything I could have wished for”, said Event Director Jane Tuckwell. “Lots of happy people, fantastic result, wonderful sponsors in our presenting partner Mars Equestrian and our official partner Lifesource BP. It's a dream come true at last. Bring on 2023”. Full results on www.eventingscores.co.uk For the latest news visit www.centralhorsenews.co.uk

It's Show me!

Murco Horse Show at Manor Farm, Murcott, Oxon on Sunday 19th September 2021 Report by Emma Richardson-Steele & Photos by Paul Buddin

T

he second Murcott Horse Show of the 2021 Show Season took place on Sunday 19th September Up at the crack of dawn to sort a few last minute things for the show and with the infamous Otmoor fog hanging in the air and the dew lying heavily on the grass; there was a cool calmness in the air, but I knew that within two hours, the show field would be buzzing with horses and owners getting them ready for the two show rings running through the day. In my opinion, a show is not a show

without an ice cream van and we welcomed Mr Rosetti's trusty ice cream van on the field. The rain tried a couple of times to spoil the day, but the sunshine broke through and much of the day was enjoyed under glorious autumn sunshine. There were 21 classes across two arenas with most classes being well supported, over 80 riders entered and we took over 150 entries overall. With Morning and Afternoon Championships in both arenas, it means that people who qualify in a morning class don’t

need to wait around all day to take part in the end of show Championship at the end of the day. Murcott Horse Show has grown in popularity since it was first started four years ago, and this year proved the quality of future showing stars is improving year on year. The schedule was rewritten putting the Fancy Dress class at lunchtime to allow younger riders to compete before running out of energy. The rosettes for the Fancy Dress class this year featured Disney Princesses and I can't help

wondering if this generated and an amazing 13 entries (at the last show there was just 4!) Or perhaps it was the bottle of champagne offered to the Highest Placed Adult! I am passionate about rosettes and began making them a few years ago to supply my own shows and events. I try to make my rosettes a worthy reward for the work and attention to detail that competitors put into their horses. Almost all the classes are sponsored by local businesses and families, some choosing to

celebrate a special person or to remember a horse now passed away. This extra income means I can make the rosettes really special. This year I have made rosettes featuring unicorns, mermaids and some with tractors and diggers for the boys.

I have received so many messages of thanks and support and I'll get round to responding to them all very soon. Have a rest during winter and I hope to see many of you back out showing again next season!

Kimpton Horse Show comes back with a bang! at Kimpton, Hertfordshire

on Sunday 25th July 2021

Report by Sarah Hyde & Photos by Catch it Quick

A

fter a virtual show in 2020, the 77th Kimpton Horse Show was back with a bang at the end of July this year. Large numbers of competitors, old and new, came out to support the huge range of showing classes, show jumping, gymkhana and novelty competitions at what is one of the few remaining village horse shows in the country. Congratulations to long-standing Kimpton Horse Show competitor Hayley Ward who went home with the prestigious Harding Challenge Cup, having ridden her horse Celestial Vision to success in various classes throughout the day. One of the younger competitors Grace Rist rode her pony Sweet Sunstroke to overall second place to take the Wren Trophy. Some highlights for spectators were the horse and hound class where equine and dog took centre stage, as well as something a little different with some traditional Spanish dress in the best turned out and concours classes. The aim of Kimpton Horse Show remains the same as the year it started, to raise funds for causes benefiting the lives of local people. Over the last decade, the show has raised more than £25,000 for brilliant causes both in Kimpton and further afield. Save the date for the 2022 show: Sunday 31 July. www.kimptonhorseshow.co.uk

The Na onal Veteran Championships ! at Arena UK, Lincolnshire on Friday 1st - Sunday 3rd October 2021 Report by Emma Taylor & Photos by SBM Photographic

L

ocal Warwickshire based amateur combination of Emma Taylor & her Spanish Stallion, Novato Salvatella, danced their way to 2 Championship wins at the recent The National Veteran Championships at Arena UK, open to horses and ponies aged 15 and over. The Society that was founded by Julianne Aston over 20 years ago and has widely he show has now become known as VOYS and in early October, nearly 450 horse and ponies gathered to compete this year and the entire event live streamed on Horse & Country TV. The highlight of the Friday Evening was the Strictly Dress-age Competition, a hugely popular class with combinations at all levels devising their own themed music, floorplans and costumes. Having been the first to go with her “Priscilla Queen of the Desert” themed routine where they were ably assisted throughout by Jenni Winter-Leech (from Flying changes Coaching), their routine culminated with Emma dismounting and then Novato Salvatella (Sparky) completing the final centre line, step by step together in Spanish Walk, which brought the house down. It was a long wait for Emma, as she and the other competitors gathered in the Arena for the prizegiving and was delighted to win the class for the second year running, with a score of 91.67! & also be crown the winner of the Best Costume too. Emma said “THE best fun ever! I have been like an over excited child planning this, (hand sewing pom poms and super glueing my fingers together, littering the house

and yard in orange feathers and endlessly listening to the music) it was 5 minutes of pure fun and joy, as we danced, laughed and lip- synced my way through our test - dream achieved! “ Sparky & Emma continued their success on Saturday as they entered the Ridden Pairs Class with Andrea Wilkinson and her Spanish horse, Pablo, all four resplendent in Spanish turnout. The Ridden Veteran Pairs class is very popular and was split into two Sections and the Pairs need not be matching as this class is judged on the overall picture created and the horses' way of going, with competitors required to give an individual (paired) show lasting no longer than 2 mins. Competing in Section B, the Spanish duo danced their way to 1st Place and a spot in the Ridden Pairs Championship as part of the Saturday Evening Championship Performance. Heading into the arena for the Championship, all four were smiling and enjoying the experience and feeling proud to showcase the beauty of the Spanish horse in traditional turnout. Both Emma & Andrea were quite shocked to hear their names called as “Veteran Pairs Champions 2021”. Sparky & Pablo proudly stepped forwards to stand side by side, as they received their sashes and rosettes before heading out to enjoy their lap of honour and a good canter round! Emma & Sparky are also the winners of the GBPRE Training Bursary Award for Showing 2021/22, so this was a wonderful start to their season.

great new equine bedding created

For all conscientious owners, the most important deciding factor when considering STRAWMAX pellets is that they help you create a healthy and hygienic stable environment for your horses.

STRAWMAX pellets are especially helpful for time-pressed, value-conscious owners. They’re very long-lasting, they isolate urine in small patches which minimises waste, and that makes them exceptionally affordable.

• Minimal airborne dust • Huge volume & depth • Comfort & support • Super absorbent • Suppresses odour

• Very easy to use • Low on waste • Big on economy • Small muckheap • Fast composting

by Bedmax, the UK’s leading manufacturer of equine bedding. STRAWMAX is a very timely, cost effective new option for owners at a time of steeply rising costs. It’s made from locally sourced high quality straw, and it combines all the equine health benefits you would expect from Bedmax but with exceptional ease of use and economy. And unlike straw, STRAWMAX comes in handy 15kg bags through your local equine retailer, so it’s always available, reliably consistent, and easy to handle,

store and use in the stable.

6-8 bags of STRAWMAX make a full bed 20-24cms deep in a standard 12 x 12 stable. A bucket of water per bag will swell them to 3 x volume but still leave them super absorbent to soak up urine. Maintaining an optimum bed should only require about 1 bag per week.

“I would definitely encourage any horse owner who is conscious of time, cost and waste to give it a try. My horse and I give it a big thumbs up!” Farmweek – Horseweek

Charity Horse Show at Tiffield, Northants

fter a miserable 2020 I thought Covid Rules permitting I should try to run the Show this year. Getting sponsors proved challenging as the old sponsors were out of area and new ones were either furloughed or closed for the duration, however after a Facebook appeal quite a few people came to the rescue for which I am eterally grateful, this show wouldn't be possible unless sponsored.

of entries in each class from Young Stock to Veterans, Exracers to Young Handler. With Jane Harper and her lovely horse Crimliave 2 winning the championship. Ring 3 the Hunter Ring judged by Amanda Wilford. Its always a struggle to get entries but all the classes had sufficient and she had some nice horses and ponies to judge and a non-scary course made for more clear rounds than in the past.

Lots of changes the biggest being a new venue, land kindly offered by Sarah Shaw at Tiffield for the Show and the Dressage evenings. Following advice entries were to be online only which worked very well. The weather caused some concern but it stopped raining and the ground dried up well.

Champion in this ring was Leah Sansome with Edwyns Royal Flyer. Supreme Champion was Claire Costello with the Eyecatcher.

Large entries made a long day for judge Belinda Spittle in Ridden Ring, Best Turn Out record entries of 23 split into horses and ponies, Lead Rein and 1st riddden had a good entry and the ridden Veteran was a very large class having to be split again. The rest of the ridden classes were well supported culminating in Claire Costello and the Eyecatcher winning the Ridden Championship. The Inhand Ring judged by Karen Pickwick had plenty

SUN SHINES ON THE EVENTING SPRING CARNIVAL

W

ITH the who’s who of the eventing world in action at the inaugural ‘The Eventing Spring Carnival’ on the magnificent Thoresby Estate, in Nottinghamshire, there was top class action over the three days.

Anya photo by Athalens

‘Warner Hotels Day’ dawned on Friday with three novice sections, the CCI-2*S and the Intermediate all coming to a fitting finale. Novice Sections went to Saffron Creswell on Vivendi Hero, Gemma Tattersall and Chilli King, and Heidi Cloy with Clonshire on Trend after superb performances over the picturesque park land. The stunning grey, ‘De Pleasure’ and Eliza Stoddart continued their winning ways when heading the CCI-2*S, much to the delight of all connections. A brilliant effort in the dressage saw Ricky Hilton and Bank C IV take the honours in Intermediate Section E, over Emily Walker and Piggy March who started their Eventing Spring Carnival campaign with great results. Competitors praised Stuart Buntine’s courses and also the superb old turf of the Thoresby Estate.

Trendsetter’. Felicity Collins and ‘Go Fly’ were also on great form when securing Open Intermediate Section I. 10-year-old ‘Hollywood Dancer’ and Dani Evans fought off a two-pronged challenge from Oliver Townend when

heading the Investec CCI-3*S for owner Ann Butler. Bristol-based, Dani said: “I knew she had a good win in her and she was on great form today. The plan is to get a 3* long run with her before moving up to a 4* short. Thoresby is an amazing venue and we are very fortunate to be here. The event is so well presented

The new walled garden dressage arenas proved a huge hit, while the main international show jumping arena had horses jumping on their best form thanks to superb going. ‘Investec Saturday’ arrived to bright sunshine with competitors and spectators set for a busy day across Open Intermediate, Open Intermediate Under 21 and CCI-3*S sections. Gemma Tattersall’s fantastic form continued with a vengeance, the busy rider triumphing in two Open Intermediate sections with ‘Flash Cooley’ and ‘Johan-Some’. It was the turn of Anya Strilkawski and ‘K’ in the Under 21 section, just holding off Ellie Fredericks and ‘Pure 26

and as riders we couldn’t ask for a more superb event.” ‘Lycetts Sunday’ saw competitors all set for the Lycetts Grantham Cup CCI-4*S and two Lycetts Advanced sections, with major spoils to compete for. In Advanced Under 25 Section, it was Heidi Coy and ‘Halenza’ who just pipped a busy Bubby Upton by the narrowest of margins.

went to Piggy March and ‘Brookfield Innocent’, who made the crosscountry look easy throughout.

He is a naturally fast horse and it was great to let him run on the superb going.”

In form, Bubby Upton and Cola III took the runner up spot from Laura Collette and ‘London 52.

After a fantastic three days, Bubby was again in the winner’s enclosure when finishing joint leader in the Animalintex Leading Rider Award with Gemma Tattersall, rounding off a truly fantastic new addition to the eventing calendar.

Said Piggy: “I really enjoyed the run, we are entered at Burham, but he has had a great run today so we will see how things go before Badminton.

Bubby had great runs on the chestnut ‘Billy Liffy’ and ‘Magic Roundabout IV’, to take home second and third spots. Said Heidi: “What a fantastic event and a great venue for her first big win. I really enjoyed the cross-country; there were enough challenges, and the ground was excellent.” Advanced Section K provided a good win for Arthur Duffort and ‘Toronto DAurois’ over Sarah Bullimore and Tina Cook, who were both on great form with ‘Corquet’ and ‘Billy The Red’. Said Arthur: “We are on the wait list for Badminton, and our win has set us up well for the season. It is a beautiful event and a great addition to the calendar.” The final section of the event was the Lycetts supported CCI-4*S which Please mention Central Horse News What’s On when responding to advertisements

Cotswold Cotsw Cotswold old Farm Farm P Park ark Fun Ride | October October 2021 Report by Charlotte Evans & Photos by Dan Dean from the Cotswold Farm Park.

L

ast weekend, over 300 riders picked up their reins as they headed to Adam Henson’s Cotswold Farm Park Fun Ride and explored the Gloucestershire estate. With a golden, autumnal backdrop and 10 miles of rolling Cotswold landscape to ride, the 2-day event was the perfect opportunity for both horses and riders to ride at their pace around the wider farmland. Riders of all abilities, including lead reins, were welcomed to the farm and had the option of a long (10 miles) short (7 miles) and lead rein route. The scenic ride included a great variety of terrain, including stretches of grass gallops, woodland trails and clear waters of the river Windrush. Riders enjoying the route also had an array of optional fences to jump, with something to suit both beginners and more experienced riders. Georgia Weaver joined the ride on Sunday morning and shared “I’m competing my horse this season, so the fun ride’s long route, open space and jumps were just what I needed to get him ready for his next competition. I’ve done the fun ride several times before and enjoy having such a great facility right on my doorstep.” Accompanied by Charlotte Evans who added “I had a fantastic time on the ride at the weekend! It was the first time I’d jumped cross country jumps, so it was exciting to have the chance to jump along the route, as well as have lots of space to give the horses a gallop. The route was clearly signposted, uncrowded and in beautiful surroundings!”

The clear round jumping was very popular and all riders had the choice of a Christmas rosette or a chocolate selection pack. Lots of riders embraced the festive spirit with Christmas jumpers and horses decorated with tinsel. It was a lovely event, and we were very pleased that despite the cold we had a good turnout.

Charity Horse Show Dressage Series Report by Maxine Ievers & Photos by Paul Buddin

T

he 2021 Charity Horse Show Dressage Series came to a close on Friday evening having run through the summer from April. This is a yearly event for unaffiliated riders of all ages and horses and ponies at any stage of training. We run on a Friday evening fortnightly. My judges are BD judges mainly so you will be getting good professional feedback. This year we started off very busy presumably because of having no competitions during the 2020 lockdown and very few shows running so people were desperate to get their horses out competing again. The first couple of events we were run off our feet with over 60 entries but after that it quietened down and we had enough to run two arenas throughout the summer. Because of Covid we thought it sensible not to do results on the night they were all sent out the following week to avoid people gathering together.

Points are allocated to the winners of each test throughout the series and this year it was a fiercely fought affair, although one rider was way ahead she lost the ride on her horse so it gave several other riders the chance to overtake her. The eventual winner was Tash Rose on Chris Loggins Steel Away J, she won the trophy by 2 points. Josie Herridge on Pollys Boy took Reserve. Special Rosettes, provided by Naomi Fenemore of Bentoms Rosettes, were given out in several categories. Best Veteran was Aubrey Angelica and her rider Millie Baker won the Best under 14, Best under 12 was won by Annie Mynard on Molly, Best Under 16 was Faye Ogbourne on Indian Violet, and Most Promising Young Rider was Grace Patel on Brideswood Ruby Slippers. I ran 2 tests on a long arena as there were riders qualified for ROR at Blenheim who wanted to have a practice on grass. Good luck to them hope they go well there.

Calming the Sensitive Horse_Layout 1 09/05/2022 16:17 Page 2

Calming the Sensitive Horse Stress and diet are closely linked and if your horse has too much energy available for the required exertion, this increases the risk of digestive issues such as colic and stomach ulcers.

J

ust like humans, horses can suffer from nerves that can have an impact on their behaviour and performance.

Stress isn’t always a bad thing as both humans and horses can harness some nerves to enable them to perform to the best of their ability. However, feeling under constant pressure, unable to shake off the tension can have a detrimental effect on a horse’s health. The top five causes of stress in horses are: • Change of routine. • Pressure to perform. • Loneliness due to being kept in isolation away from other horses. • Insufficient roughage or too much concentrate feed in the diet. • Sensing stress from their rider. Recognising the Signs of Stress Stress in horses can manifest itself in a number of ways. Obvious signs of stress include loud snorts, showing the whites of the eyes or nervous pacing. Vices such as cribbing/windsucking and weaving are also recognisable signs that your horses is feeling stressed. More subtle signs that might not be so easy to spot are a faster pulse and breathe rate and tension during training, as well as passing droppings more frequently. Effects of Stress Long term stress can have a damaging effect on your horse’s health leading to a range of common stress related complaints.

42

Show Special 2022

Adrenaline and cortisol cause the liver and muscles to release more glucose; this provides instant energy for brief bursts of power. Your horse’s movements will take place anaerobically without oxygen so the muscles acidify rapidly. The accumulation of lactic acid results in pain and fatigue. High levels of cortisol will compromise your horse’s immune response which means they are particularly susceptible to viruses and infections when under stress. How to Ease Stress When horses feel threatened or stressed in the wild they can flee by running away to relieve the tension. Leisure and competition horses don’t always have this luxury when they are confined to a stable. Nervous horses that are prone to stress will benefit from regular daily turnout, where this is not possible such as when turnout is limited during winter, try to vary exercise using lunging, walking out in-hand or on a horse walker if you are lucky enough to have one. The right diet is also key to managing your horse’s stress levels and lack of sufficient roughage is an important underlying cause of stable vices and increases the risk of stomach ulcers. A painful stomach ulcer is one of the main reasons behind performance and more nervous or aggressive behaviour. If you have a nervous horse, start by modifying the basic rations, ensuring the diet is high in fibre and choose feeds that are higher in fat and lower in sugar and starch, allowing plenty of time for your horse to adjust to any dietary changes.

There are various supplements that can further alleviate stress if dietary and management changes alone do not provide satisfactory results. Cavalor Calm Cavalor Calm reduces stress in nervous horses that have hypersensitive and timid reactions to changing situations or unusual circumstances. These can include many different circumstance such as transport and when on the road, loud noises, colours, lights, commotion, unfamiliar environments, people and animals. Horses that perform well in training may be less attentive in competitions or may withdraw from stress in certain situations and environmental pressure which causes performance to suffer. Cavalor Calm is developed for young, introverted, fussy horses and showy stallions. It helps the horse to maintain composure and concentration. Stress not only affects performance, it also affects a horse’s general well-being and can make it difficult to maintain condition. Ingredients include magnesium sulphate and magnesium acetate which are good, absorbable sources of magnesium which helps to relax muscles. L-Tryptophan: tryptophan which stimulates serotonin, an antistress hormone that the body produces naturally. Vitamins B1, B6 and B12: B-vitamins play an important role in nervous system function. In certain amounts, these vitamins deliver a calming effect. Cavalor Calmix: calming herbal mix containing linden. Cavalor Calm - 800g - £47.50. CHN’S READER 2021 ACHIEVEMENTS Natasha Rose: Steel Away J “My biggest achievement of 2021 was managing to compete, and going on to win Tiffields Summer Dressage Series and our ex point to pointer being crowned ‘Champion’. ‘Steel Away J’ came to Chris Loggins yard in 2014 as a 7 year old to point-to-pointer, where he won his maiden. He was a nervy but friendly horse who would only work on one rein. I gained his trust and slowly he progressed to work on both reins. The fact he is now my ‘little dressage horse’ makes me so proud of the bond we now have. He last ran in 2017, and since then has been my fun horse. He’s still quirky but that keeps me on my toes!

I hope this year we get to compete more, hopefully in few ROR classes. Fingers crossed, we manage to retain his crown from Tiffields Dressage Show!”

Caroline Horsley: Calaghy Hunting Bird (Dotty) > “Dotty is my lovely seven year old Irish Draught mare whom I have owned for nearly three years. First time out eventing, we qualifed to National Championship at Aston le Walls. She has won several ridden Hunter classes and Working Hunter classes at the end of the season. She won Ridden Hunter Championship, then went on to win overall Showing Supreme Championship Great team effort with my mother acting as groom Dotty is always well behaved and we are looking forward to an interesting 2022. Hopefully we can carry on with fabulous training sessions with William Blane and Sofie Cox “

< Bombadera (Bonbon) “Bonbon is my thirteen year old, ex-racehorse. He is a lovely well behaved hack and hunting horse. Unfortunately he is now blind in one eye, but still managed to jump a clear round indoors the other week at 90 cm. He was in training six years ago, retiring at the age of seven having won 28,000 pounds.”

Sandra Samuels: Patrick “Patrick won the coloured Native Cob Traditional classes out of forty entries, and the Show Cob Traditional class out of forty-five! Patrick and Bonnie Follows have had a fantastic first season together winning and going ‘Champion’ in the

majority of classes once the penny had dropped with them both. They narrowly missed their HOYS ticket on a few occasions but nevertheless had a fantastic season. I’m hoping to make my dream come true to get that golden ticket... I found Patrick in a field in the middle of cannock chase in a poor condition with no manners and very tricky. He has come on so well, making me very proud”

Leander Walton: Our journey to HOYS with a homebred filly “Tim and I are based in Stourport and together we have a passion for breeding on a small scale. I wanted to share my recent experiences with local readers and hope to inspire some of you to reach for your dreams with your horses. For us as a small, amateur breeders 2021 was simply a year of dreams. We have a lovely brood mare ‘Sheepcote Compliment’ on loan from a friend and she has produced us some wonderful foals. They say that ‘fools bred for wise people’, and over the years we have leaned that there is a lot of truth in this! However, it is also a wonderful experience that can give a lot of joy. Our first foal Freddie was an amazing sports horse and together we took on the local and county showing world, with huge success. However, we tragically lost him aged nine in a freak field accident, leaving us were heartbroken. We also lost his two year old sister with a very rare untreatable tumour, and this is where our story with breeding horses nearly ended. However, we were offered the mare back and, with a deep breath, we decided to have one more foal. We went down a different line from previously, choosing an Irish draught stallion with the idea of producing a mix with the warmblood. In March 2018, we had a beautiful filly and the only name for her was ‘Hope'. Her show name was ‘Cosette’s Prospect’, a name picked as we viewed the stallion on our way back from a rare trip to a theatre in London. It was actually perfect as she lived up to the name, meaning warrior and fighter! By ‘Avanti Amorous Archie’, she was special from the minute she was born and has won countless championships. As with everyone her two year old career was very limited with the covid pandemic, and we went into her three year old career without all of the experience that we had hoped for. Our first county show of the year, ‘Herts County’ gave us a wonderful win in the Sports Horse class and then winning the Championship gave us our place in the Supreme and a

Photo by: www.1stclassimages.com chance of the Price Family HOYS ticket. We made the journey back the next day with no expectations. However, ‘Hope’ had different ideas and a foot perfect show gave us the ticket that we had been waiting for after fifteen years of breeding – our ticket to The Horse of the Year Show! Only the second ticket of the year, it was a huge honour and a truly emotional experience. Not to be outshone, Hope’s mother, the 21 year old warmblood (Cassander/ Rubeinstein) broodmare, won a huge virtual veteran class during lockdown to give us a place in the In hand ‘Search for a Star’ final at Your Horse Live. She then qualified with ssadl for the Royal International. We had achieved the tree most prestigious shows in one year! ‘Hope’ continued throughout the season to delight us. A wonderful moment was winning the Sports Horse Championship at The Royal Welsh Autumn Fair. She has won every year at Builth since she was a foal at the Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter shows, so finishing on her third year as ‘Champion’ was very special. The year taught us to continue to work hard and never let go of our dreams! We look forward to 2022 introducing ‘Hope’ to ridden work, and continuing to show her rising three year old full brother ‘Tallow’s Prospect’. I achieved my dreams with my homebred and home produced horses. I have been so touched by the support that we have had from the horse world and so many people calling us an inspiration. I hope that I have proved that with hard work and determination, dreams really can become a reality.”

THE ADVENTURES OF GINNY…

January Blues, Saying goodbye to two very The 2022 Event Season is underway! special horses, and Pixie the Pomchi!

T

his season I decided to hold back on competing at the early events due to the weather being so unpredictable early on. We headed to Cirencester Park with a string of six horses over the two days, and what a sunny weekend it was! The first day saw me riding three new rides in the Novice. It was a great first outing and although I ride them a lot at their home, there is nothing like getting them out to a competition; horses often feel very different away from home. This day was very educational for both me, and the horses; learning about them in the atmosphere of an event and how they perform. Three dressage tests that all had plenty to work on, yet showing so much potential for our next event.

The Showjumping phase equally the same; an atmospheric arena with plenty to look at, but the boys felt good. The XC had been causing plenty of problems with a ratherstrong water jump, that horses were struggling to read. I had three good rides; again obviously things to work on, but I came away from the event knowing a little more about each horse. It's very hard taking on new rides from another event rider. The horses have been produced beautifully, but every ride is different, especially going from a male to female rider. I am looking forward to our next event together, where we can continue to build these all-important partnerships. The second day was with my faithful partner CHF Archie, competing in the Intermediate. He did a lovely, relaxed test for 32, an annoying unlucky pole in the

Showjumping, then stormed around the XC. We have had many great rides XC, and it was lovely to have him feel so good and rideable. His last run was Blenheim and I felt he has come on a lot since then, and learned a lot as a result of that International. Sixmilewater was my second intermediate ride and another relatively new partnership. A nice test from him, where he remained rideable and in a good balance throughout. Scoring 34, obviously still many more marks to be had but for his first time in white boards since Osberton I was very happy. He is so bold and scopey, he just eats up the ground. Often finding a long-distance shirt. I was trying a new bit for the Showjumping, having ridden him in it at home and BS competitions where it felt good, and enabled me to control

some of his power. Unfortunately, out on grass, it felt very different and I struggled to maintain a clear rhythm, resulting in a couple of poles. XC, he absolutely loves, again trialling a new bit. As I said before, horses can often feel very different schooling to what they can in an atmospheric situation. The bit was not quite the right one. so there's a bit more trialling ahead. Jumping a lovely round, nevertheless, and showing off his huge engine. A long wait for my last horse Ballinamurra Changsha. Having been on the lorry at 5am, she had to wait patiently for her novice run. The most wonderful dressage for her, and a personal best of 22. She followed this up with a super clear and went into the XC in 3rd

position. A wait of an hour at the start of the XC was far from ideal, drawing close to 5.30pm as we left the start box. A little switched off, sadly the XC didn't go quite as planned. She is a great mare and will no doubt be back to herself at her next event. The event calendar is filling up, as well as my teaching slots. So many clients getting their first events under their belts and doing a fantastic job. I love hearing all the updates from them!

Away from the eventing, we are awaiting our first foal of 2022. Secretly hoping the baby stays inside for just a little longer now the weather has turned, and the snow is falling. It's crazy how we can go from 18 degrees last week and now it's set to be -3 tonight! I hope all your equestrian outings are enjoyable and successful! Good luck!

Ginny x.

My next few events will consist of South of England, Burnham Market and then back to Cirencester for the Advanced and Intermediate. The first International will be Houghton in May.

‘SOFIA’ THE GAMES ON FOR 2022. by Maria Wynne

Into

Thirteen year old Sofia Games is launching into the 2022 season with gusto. The last twelve months have seen many changes, and much training progression. And as ever, Sofia does not limit her efforts to the sporting, but also extends it to the academic and privately intellectual. One challenge is never enough. This uniquely driven young lady has an innate desire to excel at everything she undertakes. Including teaching herself ‘a few more’ foreign languages with podcasts and audio facilities. How? When asleep? A change of school in September 2021 and a revised and intensified academic study schedule meant that an already tight schedule had to be micro-managed to allow for study time. This meant revising in the car to and from training at Kingswood three times a week, whilst being chauffeur driven by ‘Jo-Jo’. (We still don’t use the term “Granny”, it feels inappropriate for such a driven dynamo of a lady. One that is far, far away from the image of a blue rinse, sensible shoes, and twinset with pearls). Indeed ‘Jo-Jo’ has put more hours into Sofia’s schedule than many a magnificent full time employee worker has done over the past two years. Jo-Jo

has also applied for her HGV Class 1 licence in order to share the driving of the new monster truck (known as Shakallaka Boom Boom) with her daughter Katie. Not your average pastime when most mature ladies have joined the local ‘Knit and Natter’ Group down at the local Village Hall. Sofia has also had to contend with the excruciating dental work that accompanies the passage into teenagehood. The removal of some extremely healthy wisdom teeth, which to be quite frank rivalled the molars of Snow-Po. And the ensuing bloodbath that was equally impressive. Sofia, true to form was a complete stalwart. Apart from having to loosen the harness on her helmet to accommodate the swelling and subsequent ‘Chipmunk cheeks’, she was back in the saddle as soon was feasibly possible, training, training, training. Ending 2021 as the Under 16’s Reserve National Dressage Champion aboard her chunky partner Mister Snowman (SnowPo to the initiated) ambitions continued to soar. And we are now hurtling forward into 2022 with many plans afoot.

As a result Sofia now has another partner with whom to dance. And what a privilege he is. ‘Totti’ has joined the Games family. And Sofia’s mantra of “Be with them, be with them” has paid huge dividends. Their results and the burgeoning partnership is already reaping exceptional rewards. The joy and harmony that they display together is enchanting. And scoring a one, two in the early season results aboard ‘her boys’ is a testimony to her dedication. In February Sofia was competing at Hartpury with both Mister Snowman and Steendieks Cadillac. ‘Cadillac’ is the up and coming prodigy of the Games Team. Sofia and Cadillac had to head up the centre line immediately before the legend that is Charlotte. “Even warming up in the same space was an honour” gasped a slightly wideeyed Sofia. To which the eminently wry Jo-Jo commented “Probably the first and last time you’ll be in front of Charlotte my dear.” However, Sofia did score a 9 for her final movement, so maybe the dream is not impossible. There is an earlier prelude to this encounter though. Charlotte and Cadillac are not strangers. Roughly two years ago ‘Cadi’ was being led up on the Abbey Dressage yard when Charlotte was visiting. Ever curious, Charlotte asked for him to be trotted up, because he reminded her so much of her Olympic Partner and protege. Impressed by what she saw, her verdict was “I’d love to teach Sofia on that one. He looks just like Pumpkin”. The ever decreasing circles will hopefully be intertwining soon. 6th April Diary

with aplomb. This weekend Sofia is competing at Myerscough, and already inconvenience has struck, with the hook up for the lorry being left at Kingswood. So it is Jo-Jo to the rescue with her indomitable spirit and initiative. She is now undertaking a 220 mile round trip to retrieve it.

CREATING AN IMPACT – IN MORE THAN ONE WAY 25th April Diary As this is being written, Sofia is preparing to travel to Le Mans CDI in France to represent Team GBR. Having been chosen with her dancing partner Steendieks Cadillac, Sofia is having to juggle schoolwork, training, preparation, a long journey and quarantine requirements. Both her parents Katie and Robert have recently taken their HGV Class 1 licences in order to share the driving across foreign soils. Apart from that (and only because it is illegal) Sofia chooses and prefers to do pretty much everything herself. It is an important part of her mental preparation and has helped to create the very close bond that she shares with the ponies that she rides. The wonderful partnerships that she creates with her equine friends is evident in that she has been longlisted for the

British Pony Dressage Championships in Strezgom, Poland in August on not one, but THREE ponies; Cadillac, Snowy and Totti. Truly a case of ‘One in the wash, one to wear and one spare’. With recent wins at Myerscough Premier League and Keysoe CDI Sofia Games has certainly been smashing a few barriers. And she is not the only family member to have done so. The ever present legend that is JoJo has been smashing barriers of her own too. Although this particular one did in act belong to the Government and Highway Maintenance. However, never one to be outdone, it was done in true style with a Mercedes and a BMW. After training at Kingswood in Staffordshire, JoJo was travelling to get to Keysoe CDI in Bedfordshire as a vital part of the entourage, with the intention of undertaking some errands on the way. The practicalities of popping into Waitrose in a 17 tonne lorry to collect some groceries presents difficulties; none of the parking spaces are large enough for a start. Hence the car. JoJo was on the final junction of the M54 before hitting the M6 when she was hit from behind by an aqua-planing BMW, which smashed her into the central barrier. Leaving her straddling the motorway. In those brief seconds JoJo recalls thinking that this was going to be her final view of life, and what an inglorious way to go. What about Waitrose? The other driver, (a fellow lady) was only mildly concerned and insisted that she had to continue her journey down to London for a meeting. She had only lost a numberplate after all. Hence JoJo was left in the rain, abandoned, with a dead car on the hard shoulder waiting for the tow truck to rescue her. A couple of hours later the truck arrived and duly deposited her at Frankley Services where she had to endure another long wait, and the bureaucratic red tape of the DVLA, tachometers and respite break laws delayed her rescue. Forget being a lone female of a certain age in the early stages of hypothermia, that does not register Thankfully some very helpful policemen sprang to the rescue, and even helped JoJo to circumvent the threatened £100 services parking fine for exceeding the time limit allowable. Despite her having been deposited there by Mr Tow Truck.

Please mention Central Horse News What’s On when responding to advertisements

Ultimately the very tall and burly 6ft 8” AA man did arrive and was charming. He also happened to be quite gregarious, and upon realising the shared equine interests regaled JoJo with a story of his own. Quite recently he’d had to rescue someone after a breakdown due to a blown-out tyre. A man who he described as “A little chap who did a bit of NH Racing”. Turned out it was only none other than AP McCoy. The AA man’s wife was a big fan of AP and was not impressed that an autograph was not purloined. Ultimately, JoJo got delivered home at midnight. The accident had happened at 1.10pm. Astonishingly she made it to Keysoe for the first of Sofia’s tests at 11.20am, proving that the back-up Team has to be just as determined as the competitor in the pursuit of the end goal. Never one to admit defeat, she did of course detour via Waitrose for the ‘on the lorry’ groceries with which to sustain the rest of Team Games. Our next installment will detail the adventures in France. Central Horse News will be providing readers with regular updates on Sofia’s progress. Please enjoy this journey with us.

Jack up the Summer_Avonvale Racecourse Vets 17/05/2022 14:43 Page 2

Ja c k u p t h e S u m m e r W

here do horsey girls go for a sneaky freestyle weekend away from their equine chums ... to Jack up the Summer Retro 80’s and 90’s festival, held on the Isle of Wight every August. The exception, obviously being 2020, when every event across the globe was cancelled due to the pandemic, so the happy huge fun with a capital ‘F’ atmosphere at this award-winning family friendly festival was just the tonic everyone needed. No horses allowed, and posh wellies are only obligatory if it gets muddy. I’ll let you into a little secret; Sandra Power, my partner in dressage crime is also my partner in festival photographic crime, where instead of getting the perfect centre line we try to get the perfect artist pic, and we have great fun doing it. Sandra and I are part of the same online Dressage team, (Foxy Fillies) which we started just before the first lockdown; a better focus during those strange days, we couldn’t have wished for. Over the years Sandra and I have been lucky enough to photograph and meet so many wonderful bands; horses feature in conversation regularly. I recall a night after Bad Manners came off stage, poor Buster Bloodvessel was subjected to endless photos of my horse Durante over a beer... and in turn, told me stories of horses he had come across abroad, including a run away Iberian

horse in Spain that nearly ran him over! A member of East 17 runs a livery yard and told us some hilarious tales - as always, horses crop up in the most unlikely places! It seems that nobody is immune from the equine bug. This festival which takes a welcome step back into the 80’s and 90’s has gathered a remarkably loyal following from far and wide. In the eight years I have been photographing for them, the event has gone from strength to strength. Tickets are extremely sought after, and usually sell out very quickly after they are released; this year was no exception. My little sister, Kate Butler, travelled down from Gloucestershire, together with more horse riding friends all looking forward to a music filled, relaxing weekend with no mucking out involved. The line up this year included the amazing From the Jam, who are always just fabulous to photograph, Aswad, Doctor and the Medics, Heaven 17, Baby D, Phats and Heather Small and the wonderful Abba Chique just to name a few. It made for a music packed heavenly three days. What an incredible explosion of joy, laughter and happiness after the subdued isolated climate we have all just lived through. Organisers, Sarah Moss and DJ Alex Dyke, worked tirelessly to get this event put on safely. This is no mean feat in a world where the event and live music

industry has been one of the hardest hit over the past eighteen months. All the work was well worth the effort as I looked over the sea of two and a half thousand smiling happy, negative tested, faces from the stage. Riding hats off to them. The live music world is waking up again, together with all other events and I was very proud to be a part of it this summer at this amazing festival. Jack up Events run many music events during the year as well as an exclusive ‘Jack up the Summer’ party which will take place on the Isle of Wight on the 13th and 14th of August. And for the ultimate Rock and Roll glamping experience you can stay in one of their iconic Airstream caravans at Retro Staycations at Hazelgrove Farm, just a stones throw from Ryde. Getting there is just a ferry ride away. Like their Facebook page for updates on events and for a feel-good radio show on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights packed full of great music and interviews check out Alex Dyke’s radio show on BBC Radio Solent 10pm till 1am. I guarantee it will make you smile. www.jackupevents.co.uk www.facebook.com/JackUpEvents/ www.retrostaycations.co.uk www.facebook.com/iowcaricatures by Adam at Adamart for individual Caricatures of you and your horse perfect for Birthday or anytime presents

Don’t Get Taken For A Ride By Dr Julie Magnus

S

o you have polished and bathed your pony, you have chosen the show, bribed your friends with chocolates to come along and help, now to choose your transport to get you to a show. With the advent of social media, there are plenty of pages of horse transport, self-drive or trailer hire, and with the usual dangers of social media even horse transport despite it being heavily regulated, has its fair share of scammers or illegals or legal cowboys. So you are now asking what harm is it to give the person down the road £50 to take you to the show, or even someone on the yard to take you. Well this is not legal and whilst you might think you are saving yourself some money, when it goes wrong usually either seriously injuring your horse or worse killing your horse this is where you find out that saving this money was the most expensive thing you have ever done. Hindsight Is a Wonderful Gift. Legal Horse Transport is costly and rightly so. The insurances are very expensive, as well as the requirements to keep the vehicles on the road. There are deaths of horses whose owners who did not know what to check for every single day. There is no recourse for owners who have sadly lost their horse to an illegal transporter; the only thing to do is get an equine solicitor and start civil proceedings against that person. This is very costly and when it does end up at court you will probably find the illegal transporter you used cannot pay back your costs so will pay back at £5 a month! So how do I know my transport is legal? DEFRA hold a database of licenced transporters, but it is a switchboard and not disabled friendly. To negotiate to get to the WIT Team to speak to someone to get the information, you will need the company name, the person’s name and the address of the transporter; not easy on social media where the illegals hide. Worse you can only access this Monday to Friday 9am-5pm.

Show Special 2022

DVSA hold all the transporters who have operator licences, so that is anyone currently over 3.51t and above or 4x4 and trailer. And from May 2022, all international 2.5t and above will have to have an operator's licence, tacho fitted, and a speed limiter fitted. https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-operator-licence-applications This is available 24/7, so is a lot easier and you can tell if the lorry or 4x4 and trailer is legal. What my Transporter should have Must have by law DEFRA ATA T1 under 8 hours & CET OR DEFRA ATA T2 over 8 hours & ACET T2 container certificate International must have EU equivalent of ATA T2, ACET and T2 container certificate and an office based in the country and their business also registered in the EU country. Now a T1 has not had the vehicle inspected; they cannot do anymore than 8 hours (so a day at a show is a no straight away, or a beach ride). A T1 has taken an online test that is all the Certificate in Equine Transport! And then applied to DEFRA for an ATA T1. DEFRA do not check that the person or the vehicle is safe, they just check that the post code is valid. T2 now the person has not only taken an online test, but they have also handled a horse with an examiner and driven the horse on test, unloaded as well and been examined on this. This is an NVQ 3 qualification Advanced Certificate in Equine Transport ACET. A T2 can travel a horse over 8 hours so nationwide transport. (Since BREXIT these lorries are no longer INTERNATIONAL unless they have

gone to the EU country and registered all over again and retaken the ACET, and had the lorry inspected over in the EU country as well and got an office registered in the EU country.) The Lorry will also have been inspected by a company working for DEFRA. Checks will be made to make sure the partitions are safe and will not cause injury, that the fans are working, that the temperature monitors are working, that the ramp angles are no more than 20 degrees and no steps at the top of the ramp, that the on board trackers are working, that the vehicle has equipment to load horses, ferry lashing points front, sides and rear of the vehicle, equipment to feed horses and access to water and forage on board as well. Directory's need to be carried as well listing stabling, vet surgery's. This gives the T2 Container Certificate valid for 5 years. After 5 years the lorry must be inspected again. Insurances Must have by law hire and reward. Optional (but if they do not have it, it is adviseable not to use them): Public and Employers Liability, Care Custody and Control, Trade Equine Breakdown Recovery. Vehicle must have by law 3.51t and above Operators Licence (blue or green disc in the window). 4x4 and trailer must have Operators Licence (blue or green disc in the window) . Transport feature_Transport feature 17/05/2022 15:30 Page 3

From May 2022, 2.5t and above will require operator licences for International Transport. If any of the above is missing DO NOT USE! Self-Drives Trailer Hire around £45 a day. The trailer cannot be older than 5 years old, and must be serviced every 6 months with records kept. The company hiring it out will have Public Liability Insurance for the trailer to go on the road.

If you are hiring a trailer then it is up to YOU to cover this, and they will take the tow vehicle number plate that will be towing the trailer. Do not leave home without cover, and this cover is ADDITIONAL to your breakdown cover for the towing vehicle, so get your trailer covered with your horses! It is only £45 on top of your normal AA or RAC cover, and again Trailer Assist runs for a year so worth it when you are going out all year. You do not want to be stranded on the side of the road for the Police to organise cover as this will be super expensive!

What you need to hire a trailer:Booking B+E licence. Two forms of address. Vehicle to tow with, cannot have detachable towbar and must have an independent break away point. Trailer insurance - your trailer hire company will advise you on which company to use. Equine breakdown recovery trailer assist £45 (for 12 months). Deposit of £100 . 3.5t vans £100+vat per day to £150+vat per day, normally allows you up to 300 miles in that day. If you are going further it is always best to discuss this with the company, as many charge quite a lot of money per mile. You will need to go online to DVLA and give the link to your licence to the company who will print out the copy of your licence and your entitlement to drive.

Pay attention to the times you can pick up and take back and any late penalties if you are late even if caught in traffic. These vans and trailers will have trackers on and you sitting down to your lovely roast dinner whilst texting the company to say you are stuck in traffic will not go down well! Also, ensure you have cleared out and swept out the van and taken out any rubbish. Most companies allow well behaved dogs to go in the van, so make sure you have good blankets for the seats and remember their travel harness or crate. (Also ensure the show centre allows dogs - all service and assistance dogs are exempt) And finally WATCH your weight! By law inside the van will be the height, length, width and the actual payload you can put on the vehicle.

For all Self-Drive Hires Terms and conditions; read these carefully, especially the deposit if there is any damage caused by you or your horse. Damage deposits are required immediately and can be upwards of £1500. So, be careful and pay a little more as some do deposit protection which costs a bit more to book the van but are worth it. Always check the vehicle for damage and take photos (the company would have done this anyway, but for your peace of mind, you take photos of inside and out). Equine Breakdown Recovery Also pay attention that they have cover with an equine breakdown recovery company. Equine Rescue Services are the only company that covers self-drive vans, so ensure that there is cover in place as you do not want to be stuck on the side of the road with no way to get home!

A well made 3.5t will have a payload of around 1 tonne (1000kgs), now when this sounds a lot it isn’t. Start thinking of if you and a friend are hiring and you have 1 horse and a pony (weight of the horse 535kgs and weight of pony 245kgs) all of a sudden you are at 780kgs leaving 220kgs and the average person is around 80kgs so that’s the driver accounted for leaving now 140kgs and that is not a lot! Bridles and saddles, numnahs, buckets, water, haylage, feeds, your picnic, your show outfits all weigh in a lot more than you think so if you are this close to the weight consider taking a car with everything in apart from the water, feeds and haylage!

about with and that you are covered for hiring either self-drive or a horse transporter. You hear of massive tack thefts going on at shows as no one will think twice of someone walking around in jodhpur's carrying a saddle and a bridle! Tack goes missing at shows, as well as feed and grooming kits. Hats and body protectors are not cheap and whilst you don’t think anyone would do this, when someone has emptied your van of all your tack whilst you have gone and got your cheesy chips and looked at all the photos and you return to find all your tack gone. The Police will only give you a crime reference number which is required for an Insurance claim but if you are not insured how are you going to replace everything. It is always best to leave someone that you have brought along to the show to stay with your horse and trailer or selfdrive van. Public Liability for your Horse Remember you are liable for your horse 24/7, even if he gets out of the field. So, the minimum of public liability is needed in case they damage anything. Same thing if they go out and about. You are travelling on a public road and going to a public event. Ensure you have correct Public Liability cover. Some memberships offer this BUT always read the small print as there are a lot of get out clauses. What position of travel suits my horse? Most horses have a preferred position of travel. BARTA reported in both their reports that most of the accidents with horses and ponies were the rear facing breast bars where the horse or pony jumped into the groom's section and get stuck!

Safety and Insurance at shows

I WOULD ADVISE NOT TO USE ONE OF THESE VEHICLES AS THIS COULD BE THE LAST JOURNEY YOUR HORSE WILL MAKE.

No matter what you hire, do remember your tack and horse is not insured unless you have horse insurance and you have listed all your tack! So, ensure you have got insurance to go out and

Coachbuilders like Oakleys, Gazeley Coachbuilders, Gem Horseboxes and Theault all make the long stall/funnel system often copied by competitors and called wrongly ‘stallion partition’.

Transport feature_Transport feature 17/05/2022 15:33 Page 4

The long stall/funnel system first appeared by Lambourn in the early 1930’s. These eliminate the problem of the horse/pony jumping anywhere and they can either travel forward or backwards quite safely. Herringbone; traditionally the horses bottom faced the driver and the head faced the back of the horsebox at an angle of 45 degrees, the partitions are H partitions and the horses can spread their legs underneath the partitions Straight Across; a lot of the professional international transporters have cages (full height partitions) so that each horse is enclosed fully and can travel safely without getting to another. The difficulty of this is you cannot get to the horses to feed or water them. Newer vehicles have little hatches along the side that you can open so you can feed each horse and water them. Forward Facing; most trailers are forward facing and racehorse transport HGVs are forward facing. The Oakley HGV’s can make up any combination with the full height partitions. Most used for poor travellers is the Foal Box 3.3m sq stable on wheels. This is more commonly used for a mare and foal at foot, so the horse can decide which way to travel. This is particularly a requirement when going to the vets with a poorly or sore horse. We all know how we feel when we have hurt our backs and sometimes sitting or standing a certain way aggravates it more, so consider this especially for lameness, laminitics and colics. Most of the HGV horseboxes can take any height and any width horse, and even the longest warmblood!

everyone, including your dog. Get a take away cup of tea/coffee/chocolate and remember the DRIVE THROUGHS are not for trailers or vans!

back. Passports It is a legal requirement that you bring your horses passport on the lorry, not a copy or an e copy, it must be the actual passport. Put it in a plastic folder along with your horse and rider insurance documents to take along with you. It is also required if you breakdown as the licenced transporter that comes out requires this. Pay attention to your vaccinations as you do not want to get to the show only to find you will be turned away as you have not vaccinated your horse! Currently there are many outbreaks of Equine Influenza mostly in unvaccinated horses and ponies, but remember EI it is airborne and can travel 1.6kms. Route Planning Sat navs are not that reliable and certainly google maps should never be used on the road as they currently look at slow traffic conditions and continually re-route you. If you have never been to the show before consider doing a reccy mission a week or so before and go along when there is another show on. Look at potential hazards on the way ie HGV restrictions if you hire a 7.5t, or low bridges. Normal sat navs are for cars and they do not take into account the trailer you might have behind your tow vehicle! DVSA have just released the press release into sat navs for HGVs due to the many bridge strikes that are happening in vans and lorry’s.

It is important to recognise what your horse needs. A lot of the racehorse rehoming organisations will only allow their loan horse in a horsebox, and not a trailer.

You can get an App which you do have to pay for ‘SYGIC TRUCK’ which is ideal if you hire multiple vehicles. You can enter height, width and length and tonnage and this will plot the best and safest route for you, avoiding all the low bridges and narrow roads not big enough for your vehicle.

When deciding what is best, think carefully what your budget is, how big your horse/pony is, what your licence entitlements are and if you are confident at driving with a live animal on the

Use a map book and plan your route to get to the show safely. Print them out and laminate them so your co pilot can read them out. Also, if a long journey identify which services are the best for

Remember to knock off the hay and dirt on your reusable cup; most services give a 50p discount for reusable cups a bonus as services can be expensive. Make sure you have been to the supermarket and bought up crisps and sweets and bottled drink for the journey there and back. A large bag of sweets at the supermarket is usually £1 but at the services I have seen the same sweets for £3.50p. Always put shavings down in the trailer or van as this will soak up the faeces and urine which never ever should be allowed to leak out on to roads. T2 regulations are that floors should be sealed and large transporters have urine tanks so no faeces or urine ever escapes. Know the vehicle you are driving It is a legal requirement that YOU the driver of the vehicle KNOWS all the rules and regulations of the road of the vehicle that you are driving and no excuses. If you have hired a van then there is a checklist for you to tick off. Before you drive off, check the vehicle and carry this onboard. A lot of companies will do a familiarisation for the vehicle, so if you are not sure ask! The height, length and width and payload should be printed inside the cab (legal requirement), and along with this should be a speed limit sticker to let you know what speeds the vehicle can do on single/dual/motorways. If these are missing out the vehicle then something is not right! Finally, if you have followed this advice then you should have a safe trip to and from the show, and your only worry is will the cute fluffy shetland that has just turned up going to win the hearts of the judges!!! When you leave the showground, always thank everyone for being there and let them know you had a wonderful day. Leave no trace that you were parked there with your vehicle and horses!

Kate Hardt article_Avonvale Racecourse Vets 17/05/2022 14:14 Page 2

Have you ever wondered how the Master Saddlers and skilled craftsmen and women of today started out in their chosen career? Here we talk to Kate Hardt about her journey into the saddlery world.

KATE HARDT - A JOURNEY IN SADDLERY

L

ike so many horse-mad teenagers, Kate Hardt was determined to find a career that fulfilled her dream to work in a job connected to her favourite pastime.

Kate had started to ride at the tender age of four-years-old and developed a passion for all things saddlery, stripping her first saddle at just 13-years-old. Said Kate: “I so wanted to be a saddler and saved up £5.00 to buy a saddle with a broken tree just so I could take it apart and marvel at how everything came together for the finished product.

“I was really lucky at the time as I was doing a lot of riding on my 13.2hh jumping pony, Jamie, who was palomino and such a star. She wouldn’t go in a trailer so I had to hack her to shows with my mum following in the car behind with her lights on, they were fun but crazy days.” Aged 16, Staffordshire-based Kate left school and secured herself a job as an apprentice at H. Wooley & Sons, a wellestablished saddlers based in Uttoxeter. Kate remembers fondly:

“I was their first female member of staff and the team were highly skilled and had years of experience and knowledge that I was fortunate to learn from. The head of the family was Bert Wooley, who was a saddler during World War I and II. He also worked on the Queen’s side-saddles and was very well known in the industry. Bert’s son, Andy was in charge and it was a small family business that had a lot of passion for saddlery and the skills required. I stayed at H. Wooley & Sons for about three years but I was not allowed to take any qualifications, as I would have been seen as a competitor to them at the time. I was working on saddles, bridles, harness and military saddlery and kit, as we worked for every mounted police branch in the UK. 58

Show Special 2022

Without doubt I really loved the job and learning the skills required to be a saddler. The team were fantastic to work with and what they taught me in both saddlery and life skills definitely helped set me up for later years. This was borne out by me winning a second in the Young Craftsman of the Year awards at Staffordshire County Show for a stallion bridle I made while working there.” Wanting to branch out and gain further knowledge in all areas of saddlery, Kate left H. Wooley & Sons to further her career at Hulland Saddlery, running the shop at Marchington Equestrian Centre and working as their in-house saddler for saddlery repair at their shop at Hulland Ward. Adds Kate: “I was really keen to learn all aspects of the trade and spent about two years at Marchington, which eventually became Field House Equestrian.

It was then that my career took something of a change as I moved closer to home and worked at GEC (General Electric Company) in Stone where I got their highest ever recorded dexterity test at my interview I think due to all the intricate sewing I did as a saddler.” During her time at GEC, Kate also enrolled as a Special Police Constable, a role she did for two years until she finally went full-time in the police force for 20 years working in traffic on motorway patrol.

Said Kate: “I always felt joining the police force was a calling and originally thought I would do 10 years, being my tenure of post, in traffic before applying for the mounted police, but they disbanded the mounted branch just as I joined traffic and before I had a chance.” During her time with Staffordshire Police Kate revived Horse Watch and used her saddlery skills in developing an awardwinning saddlery security-marking scheme that was rolled out across several UK police forces. She explains: “For most of my service in the police force I used to ride for friends as the job was so busy I never felt I could devote enough time to having my own horse, however in 2006 we bought our own horses again. After 20 years of service I felt I had done my bit and moved back to my first love saddlery.

Even throughout the years in the police, I would often go to Walsall to see friends I had made, to look at new developments and techniques in the industry, so making the decision to go back into saddlery came very easily.” About eight years ago, Kate started her own business and attended further training courses.

“I had kept my hand in doing bits of saddlery for friends and family over the years and was really keen to get back to having more time to develop my saddlery skills. For the latest news visit www.centralhorsenews.co.uk

Kate Hardt article_Avonvale Racecourse Vets 17/05/2022 14:14 Page 3

It is wonderful to be focusing on saddlery and have been busy training with a number of highly qualified names in the industry.” Over the last few years Kate has visited Master Saddler, George MacEachran at UK Saddlery in Scotland and has also undertaken the Society of Master Saddlers’ Introductory Saddle Fitting Course. This year Kate has attended training courses with Mark Romain at The Saddlery Training Centre in Salisbury and has passed her Level 3 qualifications for bridle making and saddle making, a momentous occasion so many years on from when she originally wanted to study and pass the exams. Added Kate: “It is wonderful all these years on, to be back full-time in the saddlery industry and to be studying for and gaining the qualifications I wanted to do in my late teens.”

Platinum Mariella

This year for the first time Kate entered a class at the Society of Master Saddlers’ National Competition at Saddlers’ Hall in London, finishing a very creditable second in the Laced Rein section - a result she was understandably proud of. Kate commented: “I was thrilled to get this result upon my first time ever entering the National Competition. I am planning to attend more courses with Mark Romain next year, for harness making and side-saddle building.” Based in Eccleshall on the Staffordshire /Shropshire border, Kate now runs Kate Hardt Saddlery on a full-time basis and is living the dream, finding fulfilment in her work and studying for the next level in her journey to one day be a Master Saddler.
