Working visas for Greek visitors looking good!

The Federal Minister for Immigration Mr. Chris Bowen provided an exclusive interview on the 3XY Greek radio program (The pulse of the week) last Monday The interview was in relation to the granting of visas to a number of young Greeks who visit Australia giving them the right to work during their holiday stay. Mr Bowen said that it is a temporary visa on a reciprocal basis.

It is suggested this visa would be granted to 500 young Greeks and 500 young Australians visiting Greece respectively. It is a token of help by Australia to Greece in a time of great difficulty he added. Negotiations have started and its application will follow upon agreement. This is the only scheme in operation now days. An extension

of the visa is possible should circumstances require it, but may never become replaced by a permanent visa. He also added that people wishing to apply for permanent stay, should follow the appropriate procedure. He also praised the recently formed Ministerial Consultative Committee that has already begun its work dealing with all issues concerning the Greek Community.

During a Ethnic Media conference at Treasury place last Thursday, The Leader of the opposition Mr Tony Abbott also promised that his party would support and look at better ways to improved this type of agreement for Greeks coming to Australia and said that the Greek community at large had contributed significantly to the development of our Australian society and deserved every assistance in this matter.

AN average of almost 70 asylum seekers have arrived each day since Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced a return to Nauru and PNG with the latest intercepted overnight.

The vessel carrying 56 people was spotted north-north-west of Cocos Island by a RAAF maritime patrol plane last Sunday night. They will be flown to Christmas Island for security, health and identity checks. The announcement of the boat’s arrival came on the same day the government launched its

No Advantage campaign in the region to warn asylum seekers their claims would be treated the same way as if they had waited in a refugee camp. Since the government announced offshore processing at Manus Island and Nauru on August 13, 1527 people have arrived on 26 boats.

dangerous boozers VICTORIANS are boozing at dangerous levels and openly admitting it on a new State Government online drinking assessment site. Almost four in 10 admit to drinking five or more standard drinks in a session at least once a week. At least one in 10 said they drank five or more drinks in a session at least three times a week. VicHealth manager responsible for alcohol policy Bruce Bolam said the “Say When” website’s early success, with more than 10,500 visits in two months, showed many people wanted more information about alcohol, but did not want to discuss it with a doctor.”It enables people to access important information and measure their own alcohol consumption against the right medical yardstick,” he said. Minister for Mental Health Mary Wooldridge said it was pleasing the website was attracting wide-ranging interest, “including a significant number of risky drinkers who report negative effects such as injury, memory loss and failure to meet expectations as a result of their drinking”.

The website shows:

MORE than one in five people indicated that in the past year a friend, relative or health professional had been concerned about their drinking or suggested they cut down. FOUR in 10 said they had failed to do what was normally expected of them because of drinking. ONE in five was unable to remember the night before because of their drinking on at least a monthly basis. Prof David Kavanagh, whose team at the Queensland University of Technology developed the program, said self-assessment was a first step in recognising and dealing with a drink problem. To help people reduce their alcohol intake Prof Kavanagh said the program also offered help to consolidate changes with repeat visitors able to record ongoing changes to their drinking levels.

Greece Wouldn’t Have Needed A Bailout If It Wasn’t For Tax Havens: Papandreou

Former Greece prime minister George Papandreou has said his country might have avoided a bailout if the economy had not been robbed by funds being funneled to tax havens. Papandreou told the opening of Socialist International’s fouryearly conference that $21 trillion was hidden in tax havens around the world. “Whether it is in developed or developing nations, it is our citizens that are being robbed,” he said, saying this “plain robbery” denied governments the

capacity to invest in areas like welfare and education. “I know this, Greece is suffering from this. Had this alone been tackled, Greece would have most likely never have needed a bailout. “Yet Europe, the G8, G20, the banking system despite my pleas as prime minister, despite token reference in our council of G20 decisions, have done nothing to change this.” Greece’s finance ministry in February said Greeks had legally moved €16bn (£12.7bn) abroad in the past two years, while efforts to clamp down on tax evasion have met limited success.

A tax transparency report last month said the world’s wealthiest individuals had stashed $21 trillion worth of assets in offshore tax havens, which was equivalent to the combined GDPs of the US and Japan. In 2010, Greece under Papandreou became the first eurozone country to get a bailout in exchange for tough austerity measures. He resigned late last year amid mounting discontent over the measures to help stave off bankruptcy.

Migrant raids to continue until year end Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias told Skai that the police’s «Xenios Zeus” operation aimed at tackling illegal immigration will continue until the end of the year with raids being extended beyond the capital to other cities where the population of undocumented migrants has been growing.

Raids will focus on apartment blocks and other premises believed to pose a public health risk, Dendias said. The minister added that three new temporary reception centres for migrants would be created by the end of the year, without determining their location, but emphasized that the centres would not create problems for local communities.

Meanwhile Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis stressed that authorities would not violate the basic rights of migrants during the raids. «Whoever is found to be in the country illegally must be arrested but with full respect for human rights,» he told Skai. More than 12,000 migrants have been stopped and questioned by officers since earlier this month when the “Xenios Zeus” operation was launched.

YOUTH LEAD

ABOUT TOWN

THE WAY: AKRITES

The Pontic Educational and Cultural Association of Victoria “AKRITES TOU PONTOU”, Melbourne’s newest Pontic club held its very first function on Saturday the 1st of September at the PAOK soccer complex in Altona. Peter Stefanidis, President of the Association, was asked whether Melbourne had room for another Pontic Club to which he replied “I have to apologise to the additional 7080 people we had to turn away from tonight’s function because of the lack of space. The response has been overwhelming and beyond our most optimistic estimates.” Estimates put the number at 250 guests at their inaugural function for this new and relatively unknown organisation. “I can’t explain why” Peter continues. “We simply have a very different approach to running an organisation. We are not about preserving an old culture but investigating its evolution here in Australia. We are not hampered by the issues that have become part and parcel of most organisations weighing down even the most progressive committees. We simply focus on the needs of the youth and respect the forefathers and bearers of this invaluable knowledge.” The message seems to be emanating loud and clear when a flurry of musicians offered their services to help kick-start the club. “I couldn’t believe the response and willingness to help we received by so many” said Kosta Thalalaios, Vice President of Akrites. “We had so many offers that we were not able to fit all of them in one night and have to organise a second one to do so. Music is what gives our culture colour and musicians are the artists that preserve it. They are held in very high regard within our organisation.” Akrites wish to thank the following musicians for their brilliant program and enthusiastic support: -

Akrites youth come out in numbers for event!

Without a doubt, the highlight of the evening was the number of young people at the event. Peter Stefanidis continues “The number of youth at our event is indicative of the makeup of our committee. Most members are parents of children and teenagers. Hence, it is in the committee’s interest to make these events appealing to the youth otherwise there is no real reason why a parent would waste their time being on a committee. That is our edge.” Other guests at the inaugural function included the President of the Pan Maniot Union of Australia Sotirios Mourtzas, Vice Presidents of two prominent Pontian Melbourne clubs: Mr George Mouratidis of Pontiaki Kinotita and Mr Paulos Maridis of Panagia Soumela Whittlesea as well as two representatives from the Sydney based Pontian club “Aitents” including Ms Christina Banos and Mr Efthimi Avgetidis. “We are adamant that we will work with the wider community to support the cause. Another club only means that we have other means of bringing people together. The show of support by our sister clubs only proves the resolve that we can work together for a more united community.”

Young Vassily Xanthopoulos proves it is never too young to start learning to play Pontian

Finally Akrites wishes to acknowledge all their supporters such as the PAOK Soccer club and the Greek Community of Kelior who offer use of their premesis every week. Akrites further wish to thank their sponsors including their Major Sponsors Miltiadis and Panayiota Vamvesos, proprietors of Hellenic Bite 172 Swan St Richmond who were presented a plaque as acknowledgment of their faith in the committee and its goal in developing a number of unique programs to recapture the imagination of the youth and engage the 3rd and 4th generation Greeks once again to discover the gem that is the Pontian culture. DID YOU KNOW? (rule, govern, chief). The Greek root “-arch” has two closely related meanings - “chief, principal” and “rule, (form of) government”. A monarchy is a one person government since -mono- is one. An archbishop is the chief bishop, and an architect is in effect a “master or chief builder”. The element “-tect” in this word is derived from the Greek “tekton” - meaning ‘builder, craftsman’

SPORT

Brazil 2014: The Journey Jones replaces for Greece begins in Latvia Federici in Qantas

Atromitos wins at PAOK through late goal

Greece manager Fernando Santos has called up such fresh players such as Charis Mavrias of Panathinaikos and Panayiotis Glykos of PAOK to revitalize the squad that will represent Greece in the opening two games for the World Cup qualifiers on September 7 and 11 against Latvia and Lithuania respectively.

Atromitos joined Olympiakos, Panionios and Asteras Tripolis at the top of the Super League after defeating visiting PAOK 1-0 at Peristeri.

Goalkeepers: Orestis Karnezis, Alexandros Tzorvas and Panayiotis Glykos.

With the absence of such mainstays as Giorgos Karagounis and Michalis Sifakis, who are

Defenders: Loukas Vyntra, Stelios Malezas, Vassilis Torosidis, Kyriakos Papadopoulos,

without a team, and injured Dimitris Salpigidis and Avraam Papadopoulos, the Portuguese coach has resorted to some new blood for the national team. Here is the full squad for the games in Riga on Friday and in Piraeus next Tuesday:

Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Dimitris Siovas, Nikos Spyropoulos and Jose Holebas. Midfielders: Alexandros Tziolis, Costas Katsouranis, Yiannis Maniatis, Elini Dimoutsos. Lazaros Christodoulopoulos, Costas Fortounis, Charis Mavrias and Sotiris Ninis.

Socceroos Squad against Lebanon on Friday

Forwards: Giorgos Samaras, Fanis Gekas, Costas Mitroglou and Stefanos Athanasiadis.

The host was clearly a better team throughout the game, but had to wait until the 79th minute to turn their supremacy into goals. Atromitos now has six points from two games, while PAOK is left with three points. Olympiakos, Asteras Tripolis and Panionios doubled their victories in the Super League over the weekend to top the soccer table after the first couple of rounds. The Reds defeated visiting Levadiakos 4-0 thanks to two goals by Rafik Djebbour and one each by Dimitris Siovas and Yiannis Maniatis, in their first home game of the season.

Liverpool FC goalkeeper Brad Jones has been drafted into the Qantas Socceroos squad for the international friendly match against Lebanon on Friday September the 7th and the 2014 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifier against Jordan on the 11th.

Europa League

Suspended one year ban for PAOK UEFA handed PAOK Salonika a suspended one-year ban from European competition after the Greek side’s fans invaded the pitch during a Europa League playoff tie against Rapid Vienna. The European soccer body’s control and disciplinary panel have accepted the recommendation of Greece’s sports prosecutor, which also included a punishment of playing three matches behind closed doors and a fine of 150,000 euros. The one-year ban is suspended for three-years and allows PAOK to continue playing in this season’s Europa League but the side will be suspended immediately, should any similar incidents occur within that timeframe. Several skirmishes ensued after dozens of PAOK supporters spilled onto the pitch at the Toumba Stadium in response to having flares thrown at them by Rapid fans. PAOK spokesman Kiriakos. Kiriakos told Reuters that the club intended to exercise its right to appeal the decision in the coming days.

Jones replaces Adam Federici who has been ruled out of the squad due to injury. This will be the first time that Jones has been with the Qantas Socceroos since the AFC Asian Cup 2011. The Lebanese FA have also advised that the venue for the match has been moved to the Saida Municipal Stadium due to a virus in the grass at the Sports City Stadium.

The Saida Municipal stadium is a 22,600 capacity stadium south of Beirut and is built over the Mediterranean Sea. This will be the first official meeting between the Qantas Socceroos and the Lebanon and Jordan national teams at senior men’s international level. The Qantas Socceroos are currently in third position of Group B with draws against Oman (0-0) and Japan (1-1) in their opening two matches of the final round of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Asian Qualifiers, whilst Lebanon are in fifth place of Group A after losses to Qatar (0-1) and Korea Republic (03) and a draw against Uzbekistan. Jordan are in fifth position of Group B on one (1) point following a draw with Iraq in their opening match of the group and a 6-0 loss to Japan on match day two.

Asteras Tripolis thrashed Kerkyra at home with a 3-0 score courtesy of second-half goals by Emanuel Perrone and Christos Pipinis as well as a Jan Hable own goal. Panionios scored an important 1-0 away win at Veria Costas Mendrinos was on target for the Nea Smyrni club. Panathinaikos stumbled at home against PAS Giannina last Friday but the 1-1 result hardly does the game any justice. Xanthi grabbed its first win this season by beating sinking AEK 1-0 on Saturday. The Thrace team had Marko Markovski to thank for his goal, while AEK played the last 20 minutes with 10 men after the dismissal of Nikos Kourellas. Platanias scored its first ever victory in the top flight by defeating fellow new boys Panthrakikos at Iraklio, where the Chania team is playing its home games for the time being. Aris and OFI were unable to score for a second weekend in succession, sharing a 0-0 draw in Thessaloniki.

PARDON ME, YOUR GREEK ROOTS ARE SHOWING: “Man” or “mankind” is the meaning. What is the root? -anthrop-. Think of “anthropology”, the study of man or mankind, as one example of this root, with another example being “philanthropy”, “love of mankind”, and “misanthrope” being the opposite since it means the “hatred of mankind”. Greek roots can be used singly or may be combined with another when creating a word, as in the case of “philanthropy” as phil- = love and -anthrop = mankind.
