Sponsors walk away from under-fire Jones Another sponsor has abandoned Alan Jones as the fallout continues over the broadcaster’s controversial comments in relation to the Prime Minister’s late father.

On Sunday, Jones apologised to Julia Gillard after telling a group of Young Liberals a week ago that her late father died of shame because of what he says are her political lies. The remarks have prompted senior government ministers to say Sydney radio station 2GB should be reconsidering Jones’s employment.

Jones has said 2GB management and his program’s advertisers were well aware of his position on political issues and that they were not looking to withdraw their support. However, about 15,000 people have signed up to an online campaign targeting companies such as Harvey Norman, Big W and Mercedes-Benz, urging them to boycott 2GB and Jones.

Financial services provider Challenger and Lexus Parramatta this morning joined Freedom Furniture in pulling advertising, saying the company does not support Jones’s comments.

Mercedes-Benz too has instructed its dealers to cease any form of advertising on Jones’s show.

A spokesman for Ms Gillard says the Prime Minister has declined to take a call from Jones.

Supermarket giant Woolworths says while it is not a sponsor, it will suspend its periodic advertising during the program.

He denies Jones’s claims that his speech was made under the convention of Chatham House rules, a principle that allows for the confidentiality of sources of information received at a meeting.

“Our company does not condone such inappropriate comments,” the carmaker said in a statement.

Jones says he did not know his 58-minute, off-the-cuff speech to the gathering of Young Liberals was being recorded.

It took a week for a News Limited journalist to reveal what he had heard.

“The old man died a few weeks ago of shame,” Jones told the gathering. “To think that he had a daughter who told lies every time she stood for Parliament.” In a 45-minute press conference yesterday, the broadcaster apologised, then sought to explain his comments.

“This was a throw-away thing at a private function, which - I thought it was a private function,” he said. “A bit of a smart aleck remark, and if I’ve got to be belted up for it, well so be it.”

The journalist who recorded the controversial speech, Jonathan Marshall, has defended his story.

“Even if there were, I think the public interest in this would greatly override any of those concerns,” he said.

“I think you’ve got a group of people, who many of them plan one day to be an MP, there are people in that room who want to be the prime minister and lead this nation. “None of them got up and left when the comments were made and I think that the public have a right to know what Alan Jones said and that these people who want to lead this country thought it was so appropriate they would remain in the room.

“You’d like to think that most of the people in the room were shocked and gasping but there is a lot of laughter.”

Reserve Bank cuts interest rates The Reserve Bank has cut interest rates by 25 basis points, taking the official cash rate to 3.25 per cent.

That level of official interest rates is only just above the low of 3 per cent reached during the height of the global financial crisis in 2009. The move, if passed on in full by the major banks, would take their standard variable mortgage rates down around the 6.5-6.6 per cent range. That would save a household with a $300,000 mortgage on a 25-year term just under $50 a month in repayments. Bank of Queensland was the first financial institution off the mark, announcing a 20 basis

point reduction in its standard variable mortgage rate within a minute of the RBA’s decision becoming public.

The move surprised most economists, with only nine out of 28 surveyed by Bloomberg expecting a cut this month, with many expecting the RBA to move rates in November, as it has done every year for the past six. A fall in the currency would have been one of the desired effects the bank was seeking in lowering rates today, with the Reserve Bank governor Glenn Stevens noting that the Australian dollar has remained stubbornly high. “Financial responded

markets positively

have over

the past few months to signs of progress in addressing Europe’s financial problems, but expectations for further progress remain high,” Mr Stevens explained.

The Reserve Bank governor also expressed concern that lending growth has softened recently despite recent rate cuts and that the official unemployment figures may be understating weakness in the jobs market. “Labour market data have shown moderate employment growth and the rate of unemployment has thus far remained low,” Mr Stevens noted. “The bank’s assessment, though, is that the labour market has generally softened somewhat in recent months.”

Tens of thousands march in honour of Jill Meagher Tens of thousands of people gathered in Melbourne on Sunday for a solemn march in honour of murdered ABC employee Jill Meagher. Posters calling for the march appeared around the city and online after the 29-year-old’s body was found last Friday morning, almost a week after she disappeared. Police say Ms Meagher was raped and murdered after a night out with friends at a bar on Sydney Road. About 30,000 people attended the march in Brunswick, which started on Sydney Road and travelled south to Brunswick Road. After crossing Brunswick Road, people stopped for a minute’s silence in a nearby park, in the hope that the demonstration had made a difference. The public show of sadness and anger gave some comfort to Ms Meagher’s mother, Edith McKeon. “Just thank you, simply thank you. I hope they put more cameras in here to keep people safe,” she said at the march. “Just thank you everybody for your support.” Moreland Mayor John Kavanagh says it was an important event for the community.

“It’s actually not a councilorganised march, but we’re supportive of whatever the community want to do,” he said.

“We’ll be looking at ways in which to recognise the life of Jill over the next few days. “But at the moment it’s the community’s role and right to celebrate her life in which ever manner they feel fit, while respecting the family.” Councillor Kavanagh says the outpouring of grief over Ms Meagher’s death has been overwhelming.

It’s really comforting that in a time when people feel isolated in the community, that when things are really down, and they couldn’t get much more tragic than this event, that the community is able to come together and unite and comfort each other. Moreland Mayor John Kavanagh “And really, it really is a time for comfort. I feel as though there is a black cloud hanging over our city, particularly the suburb of Brunswick.”

The organiser of the march, Philip Werner, says the turnout is a sign of how strongly the community feels about Ms Meagher’s death.

“Once we got to Brunswick Road and looking back up the hill there’s just this sea of people,” he said. “Something that I feel really strongly is that everyone is here of their own accord, and everyone is here for this message and to show solidarity. Everyone’s here because they feel the same way.” Adrian Ernest Bayley, 41, of Coburg in Melbourne’s north, has been charged with Ms Meagher’s rape and murder. He will face a committal hearing on January 18. Ms Meagher’s last-known movements were captured on a Sydney Road shop’s security camera. The footage played a crucial role in the police investigation and prompted the Victorian Government to order an audit of Melbourne’s CCTV network to identify any black spots in the city or suburbs. Premier Ted Baillieu has told ABC local radio he expects more CCTV cameras to be installed over the next year.

GREEK NEWS

Big drop in number of Greeks studying abroad, OECD finds Although Greece still has a high percentage of university students traveling abroad for their studies, a recent report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) showed a significant drop in their numbers.

Greek 2013 budget sees sixth year of recession

Greece will bring forward painful budget cuts to end a decade of primary deficits while grappling with a sixth year of recession, according to a 2013 budget draft aimed at satisfying international lenders.

According to the study, titled “Education at a Glance,” 22,000 Greek students were studying abroad in 2012 compared to 33,500 in 2011 and 34,200 the year before that -- an indication that the economic crisis is preventing teenagers from pursuing studies at foreign universities.

The government unveiled a tough austerity budget after Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras met the so-called “troika” of International Monetary Fund, European Commission and European Central Bank inspectors, whose approval is vital to unlock the next slice of aid, urgently needed to avoid bankruptcy.

However, Greek students abroad still account for 5.8 percent of the country’s total student body, with most choosing universities and colleges in the UK (36.1 percent), followed by Germany (15.8 percent). The report also suggested Greece has yet to find a formula for attracting more students from abroad to its higher education institutions, as 78.7 percent of the country’s foreign students are from neighboring countries and just 20.7 percent are from the OECD’s other 33 member states.

Far-right Golden Dawn party Serifos ‘chora’ to filling vacuum for those be declared an neglected by state after archaeological site

Greece will aim for a primary surplus before debt service of 1.1 percent of GDP next year, the first positive balance since 2002, after a 1.5 percent deficit in 2012. But the economy will continue to shrink for a sixth year by 3.8 percent. Economic output will have declined by a quarter since 2008 in a vicious spiral of austerity and recession, with the most heavily indebted euro zone nation repeatedly missing targets set under its EU/IMF bailouts and at risk of being forced out of the single currency.

CHILD’S BALLOON ‘KNOCKS OUT MAIN GREEK RADAR’

The ‘chora’ or main town on the Aegean island of Serifos is to be declared an archaeological site, according to a decision of Greece’s Central Archaeological Council (KAS) that was announced on Thursday. The island has a rich history, featuring in ancient myth and legend as the home of the hero Perseus, and has been settled since prehistoric times. Its chora, situated high on a hill overlooking the island’s main harbour, is notable for its dramatic views and is classic example of traditional Cycladic architecture.

Greece’s far-right Golden Dawn party is increasingly assuming the role of law enforcement officers on the streets of the bankrupt country, with mounting evidence that Athenians are being openly directed by police to seek help from the neo-Nazi group, analysts, activists and lawyers say. In return, a growing number of Greek crime victims have come to see the party, whose symbol

bears an uncanny resemblance to the swastika, as a “protector”. One victim of crime, an eloquent US-trained civil servant, told the Guardian of her family’s shock at being referred to the party when her mother recently called the police following an incident involving Albanian immigrants in their downtown apartment block. “They immediately said if it’s an issue with immigrants go to Golden Dawn,” said the

38-year-old, who fearing for her job and safety, spoke only on condition of anonymity. “We don’t condone Golden Dawn but there is an acute social problem that has come with the breakdown of feeling of security among lower and middle class people in the urban centre,” she told the Guardian. “If the police and official mechanism can’t deliver and there is no recourse to justice, then you have to turn to other maverick solutions.”

Included in the archaeological site are the town’s Medieval settlement, the ‘Kastro’ or fort, its post-Byzantine churches, a large segment of open land where mosaic floors have been discovered and the Church of the Birth of the Virgin. Excluded from the site is the neighbourhood Lakka, where no archaeological remains have been found. In ancient times it was known as the ‘Iron Island’ due to its many mines and antiquities found scattered about the island date from the early protoCycladic period to the Byzantine era. It also served as an island of exile during Roman times. The current chora evolved from an ancient settlement and a medieval all built on the same location. Most of the archaeological finds are statues, funerary stele and mosaics from the classical, Hellenistic and Roman eras - many of them embedded in later walls and inside houses. Very few of the antiquities on the island were discovered as a result of formal archaeological excavations, apart from some mosaic floors, sections of a roadway and a drain.

A child’s helium balloon has been blamed for a power failure that knocked out Greece’s main civil aviation radar and snarled flights for over an hour over the weekend, a report said on Monday. Top-selling Ta Nea daily said the balloon knocked out the “heart” of the Athens flight information region (FIR) radar that oversees Greek airspace. Officials at Greece’s civil aviation authority and the electricity distribution network confirmed the problem but declined to comment on the report. The civil aviation authority YPA said the radar controlling the Athens and Macedonia region had sustained a “loss of image” around midday on Saturday for over an hour due to an electrical failure that followed a power outage.

DREAM OF A SHADOW

We would like to announce the release of the new Greek-Australian production, DREAM OF A SHADOW, a drama series about the new wave of Greek migrants to Australia. DREAM OF A SHADOW tells the story of the protagonist Spiros Cheliotis who has recently emigrated from Greece with a new dream. Co-starring are well known Greek actresses Joanna Pilihos, and Sunny Hatziaryiri, Nikitas Ballas, a member of our own Greek community as well as new immigrants Stratos Attalithis and Themis Tzanis. The cast includes other members of our local Greek community such as Christina Kato, George Papadakis and Michael Manthalis. The cast also features popular models/actresses Hollie Nilsson, Tanya Jani, Rebecca Catalina and Monica Eklund as well as many young and upcoming actors from Greece and Australia. The four member Production team comprises Director of Cinematography, Tasos Kontovasis, Artistic Director Christina Kato and of course Nikita Ballas and Spiros Cheliotis, the two writers and composers. The main sponsor of the series, DREAM OF A SHADOW, is Melbourne’s well known cafe Vanilla Cakes & Lounge situated in Oakleigh, where filming will be undertaken. The official sponsor and coordinator of communication is none other than the nation’s most awarded and loved OPA! magazine. The intent of the drama series is to highlight the difficulties (or challenges) confronting recent Greek immigrants in their new country. It projects a positive image of Greeks widely as having a love for life, decency, humanity, creativity and invention, Thereby discarding the negative and insulting stereotypes of Greeks being cheats and lazy. DREAM OF A SHADOW further explores the ideal that the Greek charm will win through irrespective of the adverse developments in Greece, and how at anytime, Greece may shine again and win the sympathy of foreigners. The Greek people have many talents, first and foremost, imagination. The challenge is therefore to create a new foundation from which they can express themselves and that this can only be achieved with a new vision. By building new dreams, the Greek people can triumph again if they can succeed in maintaining a healthy balance between reality and fantasy. The script focuses on the history of Spiro (Spiros Cheliotis), a new Greek immigrant who manages to become famous; mesmerizing Australian society with effortless charisma, whilst struggling to not be damaged and altered by the ephemeral glory that suddenly seduces him. The title of the series, DREAM OF A SHADOW refers symbolically to the very human condition, that of our indecisiveness between reality and fantasy. Filming commenced in Athens on 14 September 2012 with great success by Tassos Kontovasi and Christina Cato. The production of the series has now been taken over by the famous Greek director Marina Leontaris in Melbourne, and is scheduled to commence shooting in late October. The Hellenic Australian

YOUTH WORKING HOLIDAY VISA AGREEMENT

a “Priority” Between Greece and Australia A function took place last Friday evening at the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne building organized by the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria and the Consulate General of Greece in Melbourne to honour the Federal Minister of Immigration Mr Chris Bowen Mr Bill Papastergiadis, president of the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria welcomed all guests and thanked the minister for his commitment to develop and deepen the relationship between Australian and Greek societies. The latest initiative to expand migration opportunities of Greeks to Australia is an important step in the strengthening of our bonds and expanding the opportunities between these two long-standing allies. We see enormous opportunities that will flow from this policy. He added the Greeks are amongst the most highly educated people in Europe. They have the highest proportion of tertiary students studying abroad and the opportunities for them to apply the knowledge and skills in the Australian context will be of great benefit to both societies. The arrival of New Greek migrants will also be a wonderful injection of cultural and social vitality to the Greek community in Australia and generally for multiculturalism. As we all know multiculturalism is one of Australia’s most highly cherished social values. However, without migration, multiculturalism would soon shrink. It could be said that migration is the oxygen of multiculturalism. Therefore we see the creation of this new bilateral agreement as an opportunity to enhance economic social and cultural connections between these two countries. Minister, we would like to assure you that the Greek Community is here to partner with you in any future developments on the issue of relations between Greece and Australia and, we would be delighted to play an active role. The Consul General of Greece in Melbourne Mrs. Eleni Lianidou during her speech thanked everyone present and added that it was a great pleasure and a privilege to attend the

event on the occasion of the commencement of negotiations with Greece in regard to establishing a reciprocal work and holiday visa arrangement. This event gives us an opportunity to welcome the Honourable Minister of Immigration Mr Chris Bowen to Melbourne and thank him for his efforts to promote and strengthen the already existing excellent relations between Greece and Australia. Dear Mr Minister, she added, your presence here tonight honours all Greek Australians in Melbourne and Victoria. It honours their history from the first days of immigration to the present times of prosperity and growth. The first generation of Greeks arrived in Victoria in search of a better future. They were young. They had an adventurous spirit and were keen to build a new life in a, then, unknown continent very far away from their homeland. They arrived here in search of economic opportunity and they hoped they would soon go back to their families, their villages, their friends and their homes.

The Greeks brought cultural diversity and richness to Australia. They worked very hard and even fought under the Australian flag for democracy and freedom. Australia offered them in return, a new homeland of vast natural recourses and a strong economy, nurtured by a political system free of agedold class antagonisms. Australia soon became a new, warm home for all those Greek immigrants, who crossed the oceans searching for a better future. This Agreement, when concluded and signed, shall apply to young people up to the age of 30. And It would certainly make it easier for Greek and Australian Youth to travel to and work in the other country, an arrangement both countries have with many other counties. The most recent example being the Agreement signed by Greece and Canada in 2011. Australia has similar Agreements signed with 17 European Union members, Cyprus included. Therefore, it is normal for us to expect that Greek youth can benefit from traveling to and working in Australia at the same level and on similar terms with our other EU countries’ young

people and that young Australians can benefit from traveling to and working to Greece the same way they do today in Ireland, France, Italy, Germany and Cyprus, only to name a few. This is a positive step long due. I am very pleased that there is bipartisanship on these issues about Greece between the political leaders in Australia both on a federal and state level. They appreciate the contribution of the Greek Australians to what has become the Australia of today. The leader of the Federal Opposition Mr. Tony Abbot has recently announced that he wishes to facilitate better arrangements for Greeks who come to work in Australia and he is willing to give people from Greece every opportunity to make a new contribution to Australia. We welcome these kind of positive positions and remarks that express the existing political will to support Greece and its people during these difficult times. The commencement of negotiations with Greece in regard to establishing a reciprocal work and holiday visa arrangement for the Youth is long due and will only provide benefits for both countries.

This Agreement is not related to migration issues and has nothing to do with working permits or permanent residency. Federal Minister of immigration and citizenship Hon Chris Bowen thanked the Greek Orthodox Community of Melbourne and Victoria the Greek consulate general of Melbourne for organising the event and welcomed all distinguished guests and acknowledged all state and federal members of parliament. He added we are at a very significant time particularly in regard to immigration, you all know many discussions have taken place the last few months in regards to the proposed holiday working visa agreement between Greece and Australia the holiday working visa agreements are very popular. Every time the foreign affairs minister Bob Carr comes back from over seas he has a new list of countries interested in having this arrangement with Australia. Let me say this, at the top of the list is Greece as a priority and this is due to the great work of the Greek community, the Greek

Consulate, and members of parliament who have put this issue on my agenda as a priority. As we all know Greece is doing it tough, and the young people of Greece deserve a chance in Australia The holiday visa started as a cultural exchange program and still is, these agreements are reciprocal and will give the opportunity for young Greeks to come holiday, and work in Australia and will also give the opportunity for young Australians to holiday and work in one of the most beautiful countries in the world, Greece. Discussions have taken place between both countries and we have provided Greece with a full detailed proposal, these things can take some time, but I assure you we are doing our best to facilitate this agreement with Greece as soon as possible. This reciprocal agreement, when concluded and signed, will give the opportunity for up to 500 young people under 30.years of age Greek and Australian Youth to travel to and work in the other country, for a period of 12 months, an arrangement both countries have with many other counties.

New relationships could evolve through group activities. You may find your nights sleepless due to bad dreams. You can work in conjunction with those in the know in order to get to the bottom of any pending issue. Travel, although enticing, will cost more than you expect.

Plan your social events carefully. Be careful not to consume too many spicy foods, or minor health problems could put you out of commission for the day. You can get good solid advice from relatives or close friends you trust. Opportunities will come through long term investments.

This is a good day to check out your investments. Your partner may make you feel jealous and unloved. Don’t let others take advantage of your good nature. Compromise may be necessary.

Raise your self esteem and your confidence if you want to get back into the mainstream again. You could make extra cash through creative hobbies. Be careful to avoid wrong doings. You can meet someone who will become very dear to you if you get out and socialize.

It is time to clear your decks. Don’t push your mate if you want to keep this union going. You should take good care of your health; get lots of rest. People you live with will not be terribly happy with you regardless of what you do this week.

Your position may be in question if you haven’t been pulling your weight. You need an energetic outlet that will help you dissipate your anxiety. Don’t be too eager to give a piece of your mind or even your opinion this week. Control your anger.

Your best efforts will come through hard work. Call a good friend. Regardless of your first reaction, the outcome will be favorable. Outbursts of passion may cause arguments with your mate.

Loss is evident if you don’t consider all the angles. Make plans that will take you to exotic destinations. You must not allow them to force you to rush. Secret enemies may be holding a grudge that you’re not even aware of.

You will be well looked upon due to your compassionate and giving nature. You may want to put everyone to work on a project that will keep them all too busy to complain. Take a close look at contracts and agreements that have been offered to you. You are best to sit back and think it through, rather than add to the ranting and raving.

23 Jun - 23 Jul Avoid any hassles. Try to iron out any friction over money with your mate or conflicts could prevail. You have to believe in yourself and your talents. Avoid being overly opinionated or you will alienate friends.

SPORT

SWANS SNATCH VICTORY IN CLASSIC GRAND FINAL The grand final surprised no one with its intensity - it was a game of bursts, and savage swings of momentum, with first one, then the other team looking down and out, before the Swans won 14.7 (91) to 11.15 (81). Both teams found kicking for goal difficult in blustery conditions, although thankfully earlier predictions of heavy rain and hail proved unfounded. There was a symmetry to Sydney’s grand final, as Nick Malceski kicked the Swans’ first and last goals of the day. In between there was only slightlycontrolled chaos at the MCG, with six lead changes - each more improbable than the last. After the game, Hawks captain Luke Hodge was gracious in defeat. “Congratulations to Sydney, you’re not only a well-respected side, but you’re a well-liked side in the AFL,” he said. By the usual metrics, Sydney should not have won the game - the Swans were beaten at the clearances (by 23), in contested possessions (by 26) and forward entries (by 18). The Swans’ defensive line absorbed the wave of Hawthorn attacks and more importantly did damage on the way back, with counter-attacking football that created goals at key points during the game. There were many gamechanging moments, but if one encapsulated the reasons behind Sydney’s win, it came at the 14-minute mark of the second term. The Hawks had appeared unstoppable, with goals from Lance Franklin, Luke Breust

and Jack Gunston threatening to break the game wide open.

The Hawks needed to stop the flow, and they looked likely to do so, delivering the ball deep inside 50 to a contest. Standing in their 20-year-old Alex who corralled the pivoted quickly defence into attack.

way was Johnson, ball and to turn

He switched the ball to Malceski, who went straight up the corridor and found another Swans’ young gun Daniel Hannebery, who booted it long to spearhead Sam Reid, and the 20-year-old bounced the ball clear from 40m. Within 15 or 20 seconds the Swans had engineered an effective 12-point turnaround, and they would go into half-time 16 points to the good. Cue the usual suspects for the Hawks, with two goals to Lance Franklin along with majors to ruckman David Hale, forward Jack Gunston and Isaac Smith, as Hawthorn gave a vivid display of the kind of football that had made them the highest-scoring team in the league in 2012. There was a point the difference at three-quarter time, and the tension switched to the Sydney side of the equation. There was still time enough for the Hawks, and they had their chances, but misses from Breust, Gunston and Brad Sewell - whose 33 touches and 11 clearances could easily have made him Norm Smith medallist in a Hawks’ win cruelled their chances. Finally the ball fell to Malceski, who snapped truly to seal the game.

Melbourne Victory LAWRENCE Thomas will start between the posts for Melbourne Victory in the season opener against Melbourne Heart on Friday night. Coach Ange Postecoglou yesterday said the 20-year-old had got the nod over Tando Velaphi mainly because he felt Thomas would be more comfortable with the style of playing out from the back that he wants his team to use this year. Victory stalwart Leigh Broxham, often regarded as a bench player by previous coaches, looks likely to get a chance as a central midfielder in the high tempo, pressing set up that Postecoglou will seek to employ. Thomas was between the posts in a practice match yesterday in which one of the sides was Postecoglou’s likely first team. The hard-working Broxham occupied a central midfield spot alongside Jonathan Bru, with Brazilian Guilhelm Finkler in a more advanced role.

Marquee player Marcos Flores did light drills on the side of the pitch while Danny Allsopp lined up alongside Archie Thompson and Marco Rojas in the training game. Postecoglou expects the Argentinian to be fit enough to train fully on Wednesday and be available for selection for Friday evening’s opener to the eighth season of the A-League. ‘’Flores is all right, he pulled up a little bit sore after the weekend but he will train fully Wednesday, I don’t think there will be an issue,’’ the coach said. ‘’We will go with Lawrence [in goal], there’s not much between them, they both have trained really well. Lawrence is pretty comfortable with aspects of our game, particularly playing out from the back, and he’s a good keeper as well, but that is a big part of what we do and that gives him the edge at this stage. ‘’Tando had a really tough year last year with injury. Cannons book spot in VPL Grand Final Oakleigh Cannons are into the Victorian Premier League Grand Final after sneaking past Dandenong Thunder in a tense penalty shootout at George Andrews Reserve on Friday night.

After a scoreless 90 minutes, the two evenly matched sides both scored in extra time to send the game to penalties, where Oakleigh won 5-4.

missed a whole year of football but I see signs that he’s coming back to the form I know. I have coached him in the past and rate him pretty highly.

Close to the halfway period of extra time, substitute Ross Thompson put Oakleigh in front with an own goal.

With minutes to play, Dandenong’s frantic pressure was rewarded when Nate Foster finally tucked away one of his many chances, to equalise and send it to spot-kicks.

Liam Kearney went wide with the only penalty miss with an outstanding Lambros Honos sending his side into their second consecutive VPL Grand Final.

‘’There’s not much between them and I am not fixed on one or the other. Lawrence will get the first crack at it.’’ Broxham has often looked to be surplus to requirements at Victory but the 24-year-old has hung tough through several coaching regimes and looks to have impressed Postecoglou, who used two small, hardrunning midfielders in Matty McKay and Massimo Murdocca in his successful Brisbane side. ‘’Lee has done really well through the whole of pre-season and we’ve got some options through there. Jimmy Jeggo, Billy Celeski is fit again, Diogo Ferriera, Jonathan Bru, we’ve got some people we can rotate through there,’’ Postecoglou said.

The lethal pairing of Luke Sherbon and Nate Foster pressured the Oakleigh defence well, creating a couple of chances early on but were unable to finish.

‘’But I have been really pleased with ‘Broxy’ in the pre season. Probably the last month or so in training and in games. He’s now a really experienced player and I think he’s got more to his bow than he’s probably been able to show in the past couple of seasons. I have freed him up a bit and he will be all right. ‘’All you can do is give him an opportunity and it’s all about fitting into the style of game we want. He’s got attributes that can do that. But it’s up to him, he gets the opportunity. I think he’s good enough to do a job for us.’’

After the break, Oakleigh enjoyed a short period of control with the Thunder defence struggling to clear the ball.

However, the minor premiers regained the ascendency with a steadier Lewis Italiano producing strong saves from Thompson, who replaced an injured Matthew Theodore shortly before halftime.

Despite a late chance for Rasmus Festersen, Oakleigh barely troubled Stuart Webster and the match went to extra time.

On a fast break, a tiring Ricky Diaco galloped down the right wing and managed to cross a low testing ball into the Thunder box, with the unfortunate Thompson smashing the ball into his own net.

After a rushed changeover, the home side frantically chased an equaliser and that eventually came when Foster, near the edge of the box slotted his shot low and into opposite corner, past a despairing Italiano.

Oakleigh co-coach Peter Zois was pleased with Lambros Honos’ clincher from the penalty spot.

“I have a lot of confidence in him as a player but watching him, through the week, taking penalties, I was quietly not all that confident,” Zois joked.

He believes there will be little need for change ahead of the Grand Final.

“We have a way that we like to play. I think if we change too much, you’re admitting that there’s something wrong and I don’t think there’s much wrong.”

Next week, Oakleigh have the week off and will wait to see if Dandenong can rebound against Nort hcote or Green Gully.
