WELCOME... Theatre, concerts, sports and much more is taking place in Malta and Gozo during the month of February. Celebrate Carnival on both islands with so much activity and colours in the street. This year there is more to do with activities related to Valletta being the European Capital of Culture. Valletta is full of activities of all sorts and there is also a choice of events for the sports enthusiasts taking place this month. In Malta there is so much to do and all within minutes from wherever you are staying. Enjoy your stay!

HERZLICH WILKOMMEN... Im Februar finden in Malta und Gozo Theateraufführungen, Konzerte, Sport- und andere Veranstaltungen statt. Der Karneval lädt ein mit vielen bunten Aktivitäten auf beiden Inseln. Valletta ist dieses Jahr eine der zwei Kulturhauptstädte Europas. Aus diesem Anlass gibt es noch viele zusätzliche Veranstaltungen. Außerdem finden diesen Monat auch eine Reihe von Sportereignissen statt. In Malta gibt es auf kleinstem Raum so viel zu tun und zu erleben! Wir wünschen Ihnen viel Vergnügen!

BIENVENUE... Théâtre, concerts, sports et beaucoup d’autres activités se déroulent à Malte et Gozo tout le long du mois de février. Célébrez le Carnaval dans les deux îles car il y a un grand choix d’activités et les rues sont pleines de couleurs pendant cette période. De plus cette année il y a beaucoup de choses à faire car La Valette est la Capitale Européenne de la Culture. En février, à La Valette, ont lieu toutes sortes d’activités. De plus il y a aussi un choix d’événements pour les adeptes des sports. A Malte il y a tellement de choses à faire et tout à quelques minutes de loin d’où vous vous trouvez. Amusez-vous bien pendant votre séjour dans les îles maltaises !

Quest'anno c'è di più da fare con le attività legate a Valletta come capitale europea della cultura. La Valletta è piena di attività di tutti i tipi e c'è anche una scelta di eventi per gli appassionati di sport che si svolgono questo mese. A Malta c'è così tanto da fare e tutto a pochi minuti da dove ti trovi. Goditi la permanenza!

Questioning local customs and the identity of their visitors, these places can be both a paradise and a threat. Carefully selected visuals – many of which include a connection to Malta and its cinematic history – will be projected as a ‘live’ mix, accompanied by an improvised electronic music performance by Maltese artist Sonitus Eco. Events to look forward to in Gozo Jesus Christ Superstar In Gozo 1971 under the direction of Tom O’Horgan, where the musical lasted two years with more than seven hundred performances. The story is loosely based on accounts of the last days of Jesus’ life, as narrated by the Gospel. The lyrics are packed with contemporary attitudes, as well as ironic allusions to modern life. Running Is For Everyone - The Gozo Half Marathon
Have you got what it takes to run Gozo’s half marathon? The 13-mile route offers some of the most continuously uneven terrain one could possibly find. And to top it all off, the final two kilometers are probably the most challenging
one could find in the Maltese Islands. The route meanders through Gozo villages and unfolds idyllic sights of the island in spring awakening. The half marathon offers different levels of entry and includes a 2 km run for all ages. It is an event for family and friends and for the most athletic who complete the whole route, it represents the longest-standing half marathon in Malta. Gaulitana: A Festival Of Music 2018 The highlight will be Bellini’s opera Norma, to be staged at the Teatru tal-Opra Aurora on the 28th April. Colin Attard will direct the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and the Gaulitanus Choir. The OPERA+ Weekend offers a feast of musical events, concluding the festival. The festival is supported by the Gozo Cultural Support Programme of Arts Council Malta in collaboration with the Ministry for Gozo. Spanning a month of excellent musical events, Gaulitana kicks off in April, culminating in an Opera+ Weekend, making Gozo a top choice for a Spring stay in great style. “Gozo’s main classical festival” will feature a multifarious programme of events in various genres and styles.

A Surviving Tradition St Paul’s Shipwreck 10th February celebrates the national feast day of Saint Paul’s Shipwreck, one of Malta’s beloved patron saints. Malta first became Christian in 60AD when the apostle of the Gentiles, Paul from Tarsus, who was a prisoner, was shipwrecked on our shores. Biblical stories and legends of the Roman prisoner, Saint Paul three month stay on the island of Malta en route to Rome have been passed on from generation to generation. Saint Paul’s stay in Malta is documented in the Holy Bible, Acts of the Apostles Chapters 27 and 28. In that time Malta was occupied by the Roman Empire. When the settlers saw this ship colliding with boulders of rock at sea they tried to help the crew survive from drowning. When the crew went to shore, the locals made a bonfire for them to warm, and Saint ‘Paul had gathered together a bundle of sticks and had laid them on the fire, a viper coming out of the heat fastened on his hand.’ Acts of the Apostles 28:3. The locals had thought that he would die from such a bite, however, to their amazement he survived. According to tradition from then on all vipers around Malta’s archipelago stopped being poisonous. The Pauline cult started in the 17th century when the Order of Saint John ruled the island. During their stay on the island chapels, churches and our Cathedral were erected all dedicated to this patron saint. Saint Paul’s grotto which is believed that the saint was kept a prisoner for 3 months, became an important spot for pilgrims around Catholic Europe, wanting to visit and be buried near the grotto. Moreover, pilgrims used to cut the limestone found inside the grotto and use it for medicinal purposes as they believed that it heals the sick.

The Maltese Carnival: Renewing Old Traditions And Creating New Ones
The Maltese Carnival has provided a platform for artists to showcase their creations for the past 91 years. People from all walks of life meet to celebrate Carnival, which sees artistic floats, grotesque masks, dance performances, elaborate costumes and live music. The festival is spread over six days across the island with the main activities happening in Valletta. In the past few years some lost traditions have been revived while new projects have been included. The Maltese Carnival is one of the oldest festivals in Malta. In the past years it has brought back satire, making the celebration more politically relevant.

Carnival is a festival which gels families together and does not discriminate against age or social backgrounds when it comes to participation. Malta is one of the few countries which celebrates Carnival with a combination of artistic floats, dance and elaborate costumes. The Maltese Carnival has always been committed to showcasing and promoting art and craftsmanship among Carnival participants and audiences. It is a historical, traditional, spontaneous and improvised, as well as choreographed, theatrical and interactive event. Another important function of this historical festival is to diversify and be all-inclusive,
thus providing the possibility of reaching out to and attracting new audiences. While respecting heritage and traditions, Carnival also revives past rituals, often giving them a modern twist, all while maintaining the philosophy of fun, entertainment and spontaneous merriment. For the past four years, the Maltese Carnival has brought to life the historical Qarcilla, a poetic farce that had long been forgotten, as part of a street traditional festivity. During these years, there have been street performances with the participation of actors and comedians who had previously never taken part in Carnival. This helped revive and develop the theatrical aspect of the festival. The same goes for musicians. Until last year, musicians had not participated in the festival for over 20 years. But in 2017, the artistic director encouraged the inclusion of live bands parading the streets, adding musical flair to the event and bringing new flavours to the
festival, and of course this also increased participation. Throughout the years, Carnival organisers have strived to improve the quality of their installations as well as provide a decent space where these creations can be produced, exhibited and stored. It is through this shift in mindset that a new project entitled The Malta Carnival Experience Project will soon come to fruition. The new project will see the construction of a year-round Carnival village. In keeping with the aim of encouraging the celebrations in localities and communities outside Valletta, some national activities have been organised outside of Valletta over the past few years. Other localities where the tradition of Carnival is alive and kicking, such as Għaxaq in which a spontaneous Carnival takes place, have been supported in order to help them better their product.

Petrozavodsk Symphony Orchestra At The MCC On Sunday the 18th of February, the Symphony orchestra from Petrozavodsk, Russia shall be performing in the Republic Hall of the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta. The concert features also violinist Karen Shahgaldian and conductor Alexei Galea Cavallazzi. The Programme shall consist of the Beethoven Egmont Overture, Tchaikovsky violin concerto in D Major and Bruckner symphony number 0 in D minor. The Petrozavodsk State Glazunov Conservatoire was founded in 1967 as a branch of the oldest in Russia Saint-Petersburg (Leningrad) Conservatory. In 1991 the branch became an independent music institute with around 100 faculty members and 500 students. In 2003 it was named after the famous Russian composer and conductor, one of the directors of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, Aleksander Glazunov who visited Karelia in the early 1900s and created several orchestral compositions devoted to the beauty of the northern area (Finnish Fantasy, 1909; Karelian Legend, 1916). This concert is part of the Mediterranean Conference Centre Cultural Calendar and shall be held in collaboration with the European Foundation for the support of culture. The MCC has been very active in hosting quality symphonic music and in promoting concerts with both local and foreign orchestras. It has also been at the forefront in inviting acclaimed musicians to perform in Malta.
