n 1960, Ta’ Ġawhar Tower was excavated by the renowned archaeologist David Trump. In his notes, he reported that the circular tower was constructed with massive square blocks and its diameter was approximately 16 metres. Many signs of burning indicated that the tower was destroyed by a fire which seems to have taken place around 300 AD, after which it was completely abandoned.
I
The excavation also led to the recovery of a number of artefacts which included a small earring of gold wire, two small bronze buckets, one within the other, an iron double bladed axe, a bronze coin, a jar neck with a potter’s mark, shreds of a large imitation Samian platter, and a carbonised item which appeared to be a part of a bread roll.
F E AT U R E S Further investigations revealed that the site was already occupied at about 1800 BC, during the Neolithic Age. No structures of this era have survived. Four centuries later, during the Bronze Age, the site was used once again but only a few pottery remain to tell this story. Apparently, at some uncertain date, Ta’ Ġawhar Tower was built for defensive purposes, either against the Romans in 218 BC, or against the piratical raiders in the troubled last century BC. Eventually, at about the 1st century AD, the tower seems to have been adopted for domestic use, possibly a small farm. Various alterations were made to accommodate the necessities of the time, including the widening of the outer door, the enlargement of the lobby, and the addition of a ‘shrine’ on the roof. The tower saw its sudden end when it caught fire at around 300 AD. Even the few artefacts which were unearthed seem to reflect a hurried escape from this place. From then on, the structure remained abandoned, slowly disintegrating across the centuries, leaving only a picturesque ruin. Heritage Malta’s exhibition ‘Ta’ Ġawhar Tower – Gold, Bread and Fire’ shows how the excavations were carried out at this intriguing site, what was discovered, and what is known about the site’s beginning and end. Visitors will also be able to learn about the new studies which are currently under way by Heritage Malta in an attempt to enhance further the knowledge about this site and the archaeological potential within it and its artefacts. Location of the exhibition: National Museum of Archaeology, Republic Street, Valletta. Open till: 28th September 2019 Opening hours: 9.00am – 5.00pm (last admission at 4.30pm) Admission is free of charge.

he festival has recently been recognised for its work with the Best Artistic Programme or Season Award from il-Premju għall-Arti 2019, and it has also received the EFFE label from the European Festival Academy – a mark of quality that places the Malta Jazz Festival among the best cultural events in Europe. The 2019 edition of the jazz festival will feature events around the island, including jam sessions, masterclasses, concerts and a photographic exhibition, some of which will go beyond the festival’s ancestral Valleta home. 14 | malta&gozodaybyday July 2019
While all of these changes lend an air of innovation to the schedule of events, one thing has remained the same throughout the festival’s history – its commitment to hosting world-class acts in exceptional venues where audiences can enjoy listening to this complex and dynamic musical genre. Groundbreaking new voices and genre-defining artists will be performing in what is shaping up to be an unforgettable programme at the Malta Jazz Festival this July. Let’s meet some of them. Jazzmeia Horn Vocalist Jazzmeia Horn has a name that speaks for itself. This young singer and songwriter has been compared to great jazz voices such as Betty Carter, Nancy Wilson and Sarah Vaughan. Her fluid, confident vocals and message-driven storytelling have delivered success in a number of competitions, including the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition in 2012 and 2013, and the Thelonious Monk Competition in 2015. Horn’s first album, A Social Call, won her a Grammy nomination in 2018, and her sophomore project is due for release this summer. The Kenny Garrett Quintet Preeminent alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett has forged a groundbreaking career over the course of some 30 years, developing a melodic, distinctive style, alive with curiosity and creativity.
F E AT U R E S
Garrett has won (and been nominated for) dozens of awards, recognising both his solo work and band collaborations. A bandleader for the last two decades, his mastery of composition has been given the opportunity to grow and develop. At the Malta Jazz Festival, Garrett is joined by Vernell Brown on the piano, Samuel Laviso on drums, Corcoran Holt on bass and Rudy Bird on percussion. Together, the Kenny Garrett Quintet promise a performance that celebrates Garrett’s wide-ranging and inquisitive approach to music, as illustrated on his latest album, Seeds From The Underground. Chucho Valdés Considered the most influential figure in modern Afro-Cuban jazz, pianist and composer Chucho Valdés has spent the last 50 years creating exceptional, captivating music. He has toured extensively as a solo artist and with ensembles large and small. When he is not on stage, he is passing on his invaluable knowledge to younger generations through teaching. Valdés has released 26 albums since 1964 and the latest, Jazz Batá 2, returns to an idea he first explored in 1972 in the album Jazz Bata. At this year’s Malta Jazz Festival, Valdés joins Jazz Batá 2 alums Dreiser Durruthy on the batá drum and Yaroldy Abreu on the congas, alongside Abraham Mansfarroll on percussion and Ramon Velasquez on bass for a performance that will showcase Valdés’ inimitable style. The Malta Jazz Festival is taking place between 15 and 20 July. For more information and to make bookings, visit https://www.festivals.mt/jazzfestival.

n the 10th August, Vittoriosa celebrates its village feast in honour of its patron saint, Saint Lawrence. Lawrence was born on the 30th December 225 in Spain. His interest in Christianity grew as he sought lessons from Catholic leaders. Lawrence befriended one of his teachers, who would in fact go on to become Pope Sixtus II.
O
Lawrence and the future Pope eventually decided to leave Spain for Rome - a daring move since the Romans were not Catholics. In fact they had a bloodlust towards Christians as the Romans charged them with ‘hatred against the human race’. The two men made it to Rome and in 257, after he was elected, Pope Sixtus II made Lawrence the first of seven Deacons, the Deacon of Charitable Events.

Lawrence was entrusted with the treasury of the church, collecting alms and distributing them to the sick and poor people of Rome. However, those rewarding times would not last for long due to the bitterness the Romans felt towards Christianity. During the beginning of August in the year 258, Emperor Valerian ordered that all men of the Church be put to death. On the 6thAugust Pope Sixtus, Lawrence and many others were captured. The Pope was immediately executed. After the death of the Pope the Prefect of Rome demanded that Lawrence collect all the treasures of the church and hand them over to Rome prior to his execution. Lawrence agreed but explained that he would need 3 days to complete this laborious task, the Prefect submitted and granted him the time. Lawrence had a cunning plan and worked very quickly - collecting all the riches and property of the Church and then craftily and carefully delivered it all to the poor. On the third day Lawrence handed himself in to the Prefect but when ordered to present treasures and riches he presented the poor, crippled, blind and suffering people and declared that these were the true treasures of the Catholic Church. This act of defiance led Lawrence to his martyrdom. On August 10th 258, Lawrence at age 32, suffered a martyr’s death.
F E AT U R E S after quite some time of being cooked on his back he called out to a Roman solider and cheerfully told him “I’m well done on this side, you can turn me over now”. Because of this act Saint Lawrence is the patron saint of chefs and comedians. In images of Saint Lawrence, he holds a griddle in his hand. Each feast in Malta commemorates the patron saint of the village or town and each has a different story to tell, but more than that the feasts showcase the strong community spirit and friendship that is alive and well throughout the beautiful Maltese islands. In order to participate in this event, on the 9th August, Esplora will be hosting “La Notte Di San Lorenzo”. Visitors will be able to watch the magnificent fireworks display from the vantage point of our viewing areas overlooking the noble walled city of Vittoriosa. They will also be able to enjoy the interactive exhibits, perhaps create their own digital pyrotechnic display whilst learning the chemistry behind the fireworks, and more, as the exhibits will stay open until 21:00 and then they can enjoy an evening out – with drinks and tasty food -until late.
The usual death was by beheading, however as Lawrence had angered the Prefect so much, he ordered that Lawrence be cooked slowly on an iron griddle or gridiron over hot coals. The story goes that Lawrence took all his strength from his faith and
