WELCOME Welcome...
June brings the start of summer and the longer daylight makes it more comfortable to enjoy the Maltese outdoors. The festa season has started and therefore you can join in the celebrations in the villages around Malta and Gozo. So much to do during the day, from sightseeing to visiting the various sights and museums as well as relaxing on the various beaches around the islands. Walking in the countryside is also enjoyable since the temperature is mild and the days are longer. Then end up your days with a dinner outdoors by the sea or in the village squares with the colourful fireworks lighting up the skies.
Herzlich Wilkommen...

This is an opportunity not to be missed by the general public since it is not a common occurrence to have such high calibre performers directly from Teatro Alla Scala di Milano and thanks to the support of the Order of St. John at a subsidized price. Therefore music lovers should avail themselves of this opportunity and book tickets for this exclusive concert at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta at the earliest possible. he exhibition aims to investigate the circumstances which led to the Maltese uprising against the British colonial government, and its consequences. Up to 31st August 2019, the exhibition will be held at the Parliament House in Valletta. Then, it will move to the National Museum of Archaeology in Valletta until the end of the year. The First World War ended with enthusiastic declarations that the Allied victory was in actual fact the success of free people and national self determination over autocracy. It was a time of great expectations and yet also a time of great disillusions. Britain was aware that its empire had to be reformed to reflect the new twentieth century requirements in order to be sustainable. It also had to deal with increasing pressure for self-government from colonised territories. Therefore, after mercilessly repressing protests in territories such as India and Egypt, it came up with novel constitutional instruments granting limited doses of selfgovernment, while at the same time not endangering in any way the imperial interests and retaining final ultimate power. Ireland also went through the war of independence in 1919-21.

F E AT U R E S
Colonialism had started turning full circle. Europeans had conquered most of the globe with the excuse of spreading Western culture, supposedly superior to that of the conquered territories. This was in fact so successful that conquered territories adopted Western values and principles such as self determination and human rights, and during the twentieth century, they started claiming equality with their conquerors in the name of those very values. Following more than one hundred years of British domination and broken promises regarding a constitution which included self-government, the Maltese people too increased their hopes that they would finally obtain what was due to them. Yet this was easier said than done. Under British rule, Malta was not considered as an ordinary colony, but exclusively in its military function as a fortress. Some British high officials even suspected that constitutional rights were intrinsically incompatible with Malta’s role as a fortress, and that this was inevitably doomed to fail. Yet this ‘fortress argument’ which was quoted for decades was not holding water any more. As a ‘fortress’, Malta’s economy generally flourished in times of war, but stagnated during peace. As the First World War came to an end, rumours started spreading that once again, many people will be discharged from work, leading to mass unemployment and widespread poverty. War had changed people’s outlook as they became aware that they were being exploited. Instead of being discharged, Maltese workers now claimed for their reward in return for their sterling service towards the war effort, not only in the dockyard, but also in the service they provided in the health sector, which earned Malta the nickname ‘the nurse of the Mediterranean’.
Revolutionary messages which urged people to claim their rights, the arrest and court martial of leading figure Enrico Mizzi, censorship of the press, the strike and protests of university students, a strong feeling of exploitation and disregard by the foreign authorities, the different treatment and salaries between Maltese and English workers in the dockyard, dismissals from the dockyard, the great scarcity and inflated prices for essential foodstuffs such as bread, and the imposition of new taxes were bringing the Maltese to a boiling point. As Dr Giuseppe Mizzi had observed in the newspaper ‘Malta’ following the first meeting of the Assemblea of 25th February 1919, ‘Only a spark is required for the fire to break out’. What eventually took place on 7th June 1919 was an unprecedented and unique episode between colonisers and colonised in Malta. The riots which emerged became known as ‘the bloodiest street confrontations during the entire British period’. Heritage Malta’s exhibition ‘Culhat al Belt: Sette Giugno 1919-2019’ presents an intriguing narrative about how several factors finally led to the revolt of the Maltese people against the British rulers on 7th June 1919. It also highlights some of the consequences which emerged once this decisive action was taken. Recognizing the Sette Giugno as a milestone which unites past struggles and future aspirations, and seeing the respect towards its commemoration by both political parties and by the State, the exhibition also contemplates the idea whether this meaningful day should be recognized as Malta’s only national day as a symbol of the national unity which ensued in 1919, when the leaders deliberated and the people operated for one objective.

Message from The Counselor for Cooperation and Cultural Action Embassy of France in Malta
T
o You this June 2019 of musical and cinematographic celebrations,
Which bring us together under the sign of cultural diversity and brotherly solidarity. In sharing, beautiful “interior and exterior” days, which will lead us to revisit the crossed stories of the mixed Seas and Oceans. We will rediscover the Songs of Yesteryear - French-Italian “Promenades à trois Voix”, on June 8 and 9, in places of heritage of your beautiful Archipelago (Chapel of Santa Maria in Ta’ Bir Miftuh and the Falson Palace in Mdina). We will decline dazzling destinies: that of the “Grande Dame Noire”, the singer Barbara, “Claire de Nuit” was written from “Elle”, to that of Agnès Varda, director, actress by the 7th Art, at Spazju Kreativ, on June 12 and during the Valletta Film Festival, from June 14. Then we will slip into the warmth of summer by listening to jazzy rhythms, on June 21, at the StoreRoom in Ta’ Xbiex, the group Sherazade et LavionRose, between blues, electro, oriental rock, from France, on June 22 in the Botanical Gardens of Argotti in Floriana and on June 23 at Mġarr in Gozo. A music of crossed worlds, of voices singing of joys and sorrows, of the beauty of shared heritage, which unites us around the same need to meet, to converse, to find ourselves, to “Savoir Aimer” what We are. Power of Words, Images, Sounds, Duty of Harmony, Transmission, a Mission “en Fête” that takes the floor, the pen or the moment photographed to tell it again.

But What Exactly Is Għana?
This Year’s Line-Up
Well, traditionally, it took place in small, intimate settings like the village bar, among friends and relatives. It appears in a number of forms but, the most popular of all, is the improvisational ‘spirtu pront’, in which two singers engage in a lyrical duel, accompanied by guitarists. The history books trace it back to the days of the Knights of St John, and it was largely practiced by housewives and labourers. But, while għana was always popular in Malta’s smaller towns and villages, and among friends, Għanafest has created an opportunity for the skill and talent of these musicians and singers to reach a wider audience, who might otherwise not have had the chance to enjoy the music in its traditional setting. Performers from all over the region will be attending Għanafest, giving visitors an experience of folk music across a range of musical styles and languages.
With this year’s programme, Festivals Malta hopes to challenge and engage visitors like never before. The festival will take place over two days packed with entertainment and activities. There will be plenty of music, of course, including local and international folk bands. Maltese bands Skald, The Travellers and Mistura will be performing, as well as Sherazade et L’Avion Rose – a fantastic French folk group. Għanafest will also feature storytelling sessions in the original dialect, an exhibition of Maltese crafts and local gastronomy, giving visitors a chance to experience a bit of Maltese culture in one place. Għanafest will take place at the Argotti Gardens in Floriana between 21st and 22nd June. Tickets are available from www.kultura.mt. For more information visit www.festivals.mt/ghanafest.
