he Gozo Museum of Archaeology is located immediately behind the original gateway of the Citadel. You can enjoy the refined architecture of the 17th century townhouse which houses this museum, while exploring the intriguing exhibits, all of which help illustrate Gozo’s rich archaeology and history. Artefacts range from prehistory to the Classical period, to the Medieval and Early Modern periods. One of the most curious exhibits within this museum is a human skeleton which was discovered inside a split large amphora on the island of Comino, dating back to Roman times.

T

The Gozo Nature Museum is situated behind the Courts of Justice in the Citadel. It is housed within a 17th century building which is endowed with several authentic architectural features. The exhibits in the museum mainly focus on Gozo’s natural resources

and their use by the island’s inhabitants. Geology, minerals, human and animal evolution, marine life, insects, birds, flora and local ecosystems are all covered in the permanent display. One of the most important exhibits specimen is the ‘Maltese Fungus’, formerly believed to grow only on the so-called ‘Fungus Rock’ in Dwejra. The Gran Castello Historic House is found in a cluster of medieval buildings in Bernardo De Opuo Street at the Citadel. As evidenced by the elegant architectural features, these houses originally belonged to wealthy families. The exhibits on display illustrate the local domestic, rural and traditional ways of life. Traditional implements and tools on display have long stopped being used, but the visitor is given the opportunity to recall the hard yet simple way of life back then. You can also walk through a reconstructed 18th century townhouse with authentic handwoven soft furnishings, as well as appreciate the domestic set-up in bygone times. The Old Prison which lies adjacent to the Courts of Justice at the Citadel is an intriguing place to visit. This prison was in use from the mid-16th century until the beginning of the 20th century. The Knights of St John used this prison to intern their rowdy and disruptive members, but after their expulsion from the Islands, the prison remained in use. Besides the architectural value of this oldest surviving prison in Gozo, the most interesting characteristic is its human element. Indeed, a large number of graffiti of sea vessels, palm-prints, crosses, names, dates, games, and anthropomorphic figures are tell-tale witnesses of who was incarcerated within these walls. At the Gozo Area Office Exhibition Hall, you can visit Heritage Malta’s intriguing exhibition ‘Exploring the Phoenician Shipwreck off Xlendi’. The exhibition focuses on the unusual find of a Phoenician shipwreck which lay submerged in the sea for hundreds of years at the depth of 110 metres. Only a handful of such vessels were identified in the Mediterranean. The exhibition highlights some of the innovative techniques which were used in this project, including the methods utilized to recover a number of artefacts from the shipwreck, some of which were previously unknown in the archaeological record and are now displayed in this exhibition. The Ċittadella Visitors’ Centre is housed in two old water reservoirs built in the 1870’s in part of the Citadel’s Ditch. Various

interactive displays portray the evolution of this historical city over three millennia. You can also enjoy the surround theatre which presents an immersive experience about the salient moments of the millenial history of the Citadel. Heritage Malta’s sites and museums at the Citadel are open from Monday to Sunday, from 9.00hrs to 17.00hrs (last admission 16.30hrs). Finding the Time – Building Meaningful Relationships with our children HOW DO WE BUILD POSITIVE R E L AT I O N S H I P S WITH OUR CHILDREN? HOW CAN WE P R OV I D E A WA R M , S U P P O RT I V E , A N D T R U S T I N G R E L AT I O N S H I P ?

uality interactions can allow us to do just this with our child and help them gain the inner strength to overcome problems they face in their day to day. Young people gain confidence from being surrounded by adults that are truly invested in their well-being and their experiences.

Q

The great news is that the most meaningful of connections are based on the simplest of gestures. Something as simple as a proud smile or a moment of patience where we listen to them and engage with them can be extremely meaningful. Make sure that kids have your undivided attention. Be engaged in the process as they learn a new skill. These can be highly prized interactions.

F E AT U R E S Children need adults in their life that find the time to play with them. Give them a chance to choose what they want to do with you. This improves a child’s feeling of belonging and significance. The summer months provide the perfect time for this. Prioritise activities you can do as a family that provide a space for these moments to take place. Find the value in the simplest of interaction as these can mean the world to the young people in your life. At Esplora we pride ourselves with offering a safe space where these everyday interactions can take place. We try our best to provide a space to connect over a shared interest and play together, for kids and adults alike. Join us for Family Science Days from the 13th -18th August. Build and launch a rocket into space during ‘Blast Off ’. Watch and engage with bubbles of all shapes and sizes during our Beautiful Bubbles Show.
