VB COUNTRY MARKET - 5 Years old this year M. Haddad The VB Country Market started with a little fund-raising idea to help finish the Victoria Beach Community Centre building, inside and out. The plan initially was to offer local area folks a chance to get fresh and unique, homemade items made and grown in the area. “IF” it worked, maybe a second year would raise a little more to get the walls painted and the siding on. Perhaps even it would bring people to see what was happening in their neighborhood and get a few more members or participants in the activities open to all of East Beaches. Speaking on behalf of the Board of the Centre, we have received phenomenal support and many, many cottagers, residents and visitors have
come to experience a new Saturday morning tradition at the Beach. Everything is better with food, so Year 2 the volunteers decided to offer breakfast to raise money to outfit the canteen. We now offer our apologies for the wait-times for the pancakes and eggers. Even inclement weather does not stop the flurry of hungry shoppers! Although there are close to 50 registered, our largest group of vendors at one time came on the August long week-end (28 in all). The flexibility offered and reasonable cost has been part of the success, but may disappoint shoppers who did not make a decision on the spot. If anyone needs to contact a vendor, feel free to contact me by email at: mmurrayhaddad@ gmail.com.

Message from the Executive
Hi again, It’s hard to believe that another great summer is coming to a close. As I look at the schedule of events I see only two things to remind you about. This weekend, August 18 and 19 is the Novelty Tennis tournament. Even if you aren’t playing, drop by check out the action. And, although it pains me to type the S word – SeptemberMonday the 11th is the 55+ golf tournament and dinner. As I look back at the events calendar, and all of the events that we cram into 7 weeks of programming, I want to send out a big thank you to all our convenors and volunteers. Every year the community pulls through to make sure the events and activities continue to run. There are a number of openings for convenors and if you are interested please contact Lindsay Stevenson, Cathy Bizrachuk, or any board member. I can assure any interested party that the support from the club and past convenors is fantastic. I would like to comment about the film festival that was held on the long weekend. It was a great
couple of evenings of films by local film makers. They were one of the highlights of my weekend and I encourage you to attend next summer if we are lucky enough to have this event return. A couple of the films definitely inspired some great conversations. Thanks to all of you that support our club. I have heard from a number of people this summer that have commented on the unique community that we are lucky enough to be part of. Have a safe and happy off season and I look forward to seeing everyone in the summer of 2019. And, just because I can’t help myself, please check our website www.victoriabeachclub.com in the spring for our online registration link. You may or may not have heard me mention how great the process is and that I really like it. Enjoy the last official weekend of programming, and here’s to a great fall season at VB Dave Wilson VB Club Treasurer

About the Victoria Beach Herald
One of the longest continuously publishing community newspapers in Canada, now in our 93rd year, the Victoria Beach Herald is a service of the Victoria Beach Club. The Herald prints nine issues each summer on Fridays from late June to mid-August. The Herald welcomes submissions from readers focused on family events, beach happenings, community issues, etc. Letters to the Editor are always welcome: they must be signed with the author’s name and be written with the understanding that many people read the Herald, including youngsters. Submissions should be sent via email to vbherald@shaw.ca. Those without access to email can place written submissions in the VB Herald mailbox behind the cash counter at the Victoria Beach General Store. Submission deadline is 4PM Fridays with the exception of VB Club event convenor submissions for events occurring on weekend days. Editor

Council Corner
Your new council has been working quickly to ensure that we have a terrific close to the summer season. In order to do this, we had to take on the challenge of providing all municipal services during one of our busiest weekends, with only 44% of our usual summer workforce. With patience from the community and the addition of several large blue bins to help with the overflow at our primary garbage depot, our employees were able to get through this hurdle with the determination and dedication they have shown to this community since our inception nearly one hundred years ago. Our first public meeting was held this past Tuesday August 7, 2018 at the municipal office, where we passed a resolution to amend the Procedural By-Law. This resolution ensures that future Council Meetings will be held in the RM of Victoria Beach on a rotating schedule with the Municipal Office, so that we are able to properly represent all our residents. We will be checking into live streaming options for meetings held here at VB. On that note please join us for our upcoming Council Meeting on Tuesday, August 21 at 7 p.m. at the Sr. Scene. We also passed first reading of By-Law 1572, otherwise known as the ‘Organizational By-Law’. This by-law will keep our Council more informed of all issues affecting the municipality. As a result of this change in our organizational structure we unanimously agreed that a change in administration was necessary. We thank Andrew Glassco for his service to our community as our CAO, and we wish him well in his future endeavours. Finally, we committed to two key projects. The first, is to develop a Communications Strategy for the municipality so that we can develop proper two-way communication with all our residents, levels of government, and stake holders. The second was to affirm our pledge to build the Albert Beach dike, which we addressed with the affected land owner. From this discussion, a question arose regarding the drainage of the new development in Albert Beach. Council was informed that the proper planning measures have been taken to prevent any sort of flooding coming from this area. To ensure that this is the case, Council is reviewing the documentation and will be working diligently with the appropriate authorities. Council will also be providing an information package to the Albert Beach Residents to answer such future questions. To close out the summer and the last edition of Council Corner in the VB Herald, we leave you with this inspirational quote. “Unity is strength…when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved.” – Mattie Stepanek The Council of Victoria Beach.

Dear Summer 2018, You went by too fast. I thought we talked about this last year? I was under the impression that you agreed that you would slow down time and let us all have a little bit more of you? Maybe I didn’t specify enough time? We want more mornings at the bakery, and meetings at the Moonlight. We want more games in the Village Green and to get our adrenaline pumping for the scavenger hunt. Not to mention, the relaxing romantic nights at movie nights where we can all snuggle up and watch a good oldfashioned flick and hang out. We just wanted more time to bond. Can you do that for us next year? Please talk to your powers at be and help us out here! The last 7 weeks have been a absolute success and blast. The sound of screen doors slamming, the bike rides in the warm rain, and the beaches that were so far out that you could walk for miles. We could never have or do this without all of our people. So THANK YOU to everyone for coming out to play, sing, dance and laugh. This is our community. This is our Victoria Beach. Cherish these memories forever. See you at the beach, Monica White monlywhite@hotmail.com

VB Ladies Golf results The sun shone bright, the winds blew gently, it was balmy and warm and — no wait, that was last year’s ladies golf tournament. This year’s extravaganza on July 25 was a brisk grey day that challenged the second set of golfers with at least six holes of notso-fine drizzle. Still, the two best scores of the day were scored in that later round, going to prove that a good Scottish mist is just what you need for a winning round of golf. Lana Ritchie won the low gross score trophy (Open) with a 41, and Sally Lawler won the low gross score trophy for members, with a 44. Other winners of the day: Flight 1 Danielle Zelinsky, 44 (countback) Norma Purdy, 44 Tracy Sutherland, 4 5 (countback) Flight 2 Fay Berthelette Joan Marshall Maureen Watchorn Flight 3 Norma Dupont Susan Flanders Kate Friesen
Flight 4 Marlene Boyda Jeanne Barr Vicki Janzen Flight 5 Rhonda Plett Tanya Koop Irene Enns Flight 6 Maureen Tyler Debbie Dryden Elaine Smith
Tanya Koop won the Longest Drive contest, Leanne Van Bergen was Closest to the Line, Lisa Lucht won the Birdie draw, Carol Hutchison won the On In One draw, and Wendy Bates, Peggy Maeren and Lana Ritchie all won $35 apiece in the Putting Contest (which also produced a sizable donation to the East Beaches Animal Shelter.) Margo Goodhand hit the target on 8th, winning a Bed in a Box from Dreamstar Bedding and Dave’s Furniture and Appliance. Thanks so much to all of you who donated to our Silent Auction, which helped us raise funds for Nova House Women’s Shelter in Selkirk plus the Victoria Beach Community Centre, which again

VB Community Church
The season is flying by and it’s been a great summer. The VB Community Church meets on Sundays at 10 am in St Michael’s Church, corner of Pine & 8th. All are welcome to attend our multidenominational services. Thank you to Majors Ray & Cathie Harris for leading our service last Sunday. Next Sunday, August 19th, we look forward to having Hans Boge from the Mennonite Church lead the service. Hans is a part of the VB community and a regular at the Community Church. Choir practice starts at 9:30am prior to the service. Not only do we harmonize our voices, but often our wardrobe as well. Check out the photo of Church attendees last Sunday. If you enjoy singing, come on out and join us. Mark your calendars for the VB Community Church Annual General Meeting to be held Sunday, August 26/18 at 9am, prior to the service.

Congratulations to Janet and Allan Brown of 6th Avenue on the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary this August 24th. Janet’s family (the Youngs) has been coming to Victoria Beach since the 1950s and Allan started coming to the Beach in the late 60s. He has since made up for lost time and has been a fixture on the golf course for many, many years. Janet and Allan brought their 3 daughters to Victoria Beach every summer and are so happy that the tradition has continued with their grandchildren. Lots of love to Janet and Allan on this very important occasion from your family. Thank you! Cathy Landolt

Eight at the Gate
11
We have had a great season with minimal “incidents”: numerous flat tires (Patrick has the record at five) and four “tip overs”, none of which were caught on camera so therefore didn’t happen. The one tip over involving a husband and wife duo did not result in a trip to the hospital. Tire changes at roadside resulted in minimal blood loss (Bob’s thumb is almost healed) and multiple contributions to the swear jar. The group will continue to ride through the remainder of the season. By the time you read this, we will have already switched to 09:00, and will adjust again after Labour Day to 10:00. Our group wind-down will take place on Sunday September 2nd. For information contact Bob Marshall cell 204 261-4292, email jmarsha@mymts.net or find us on Face Book at “Eight at the Gate”. VB Novelty Tennis Tournament - 2018 – Aug 18th and 19th
Described as “The most fun I have ever had in my entire life” by virtually everyone that has ever attended the event, it is time once again for the VB Novelty Tournament. This year the Saturday mid day break will be filled with a serving clinic (complete with ball speed radar), a groundstroke clinic (with an awesome ball machine), and a prize court where we
give away the farm. If that’s not enough for you, at the same time there will be GVS on the back courts. Roam around between the clinics, GVS, and the prize court while awesome tunes play in the background. The format of the tournament will remain as a team tennis event. There will be 4 people per team, playing in two divisions. Winners will be decided by total games won. All matches will be pro-sets, and games will be no-ad deuce. Teams will be meticulously selected and blended to maximize your enjoyment no matter what your level of play. There will also be additional prizes given out by our roving prize judge for pretty much anything considered to be “impressive” while maintaining at least a smidge of good taste. And now for the fine print ….. Sign up sheets will be posted at the tennis courts on Friday Aug 10th at noon. Sheets will be taken down at 5pm on Thursday Aug 16th or as soon as the first 48 players have signed up. Teams and draws will be posted no later than 5pm on Friday Aug 17th. Entry fee is $5.00 please pay before you play. All entrants must be members of the VB club, and have their own shoe tag. Duane Lucht Jeff Hollins Bruce Eyford

To say that David from Edinburgh handily won the Belair Road segment of our ride on August 4th would be an understatement. As noted in last week’s Herald, David took first.

Second place went to Andrew from Albert Beach, while Brady took third. Lisa (first overall last year) took third overall this year and first in the new women’s division this year. Suzanne, another Albertan, was second, while Kerri from Beaconia took third.

The pancakes and mimosas at Marshall’s were quickly consumed. Maureen stepped up at the last minute and took over the second griddle while Joan worked inside on third griddle as well as keeping the batter flowing.
Sunshine & Smiles at Albert Beach
Back row: Lise Bourassa (Owner) Dan Lester (RRNTA), Reeve Raymond Garand, MLA Wayne Ewasko, Reeve Penny McMorris, Councillor Jack Brisco, Councillor Mike Bartmanovitch, Michelle Carlson, President, VB Permanent Residents’ Association. L to R in Front: Jesse Kleinschmit and Jillian Franczyk (proudly sporting the commemorative T-shirts).
Wayne Ewasko, MLA for Lac du Bonnet, made a Manitoba Government funding announcement for the Red River North Trail Association (RRNTA) in support of the development and construction of the Safe Crossing of PTH 59 in Victoria Beach and the Belair North Project Greenway Multi-Use Trail construction in the RM of Alexander. The announcement that took place at The Beach Exchange in Albert Beach was symbolic of how closely connected all of the East Beaches communities have become. Standing on RM of Alexander soil, looking across Saffie Road to the RM of Victoria Beach can only serve to remind residents and cottagers alike, that boundaries are only on paper. The
significance of this announcement was the culmination of a vision and hard work by Ron Lester, Executive Director of Red River North Trails Association. A well-written proposal to the provincial government has netted enough funds, which cobbled with two RMs committing their support, will enhance the Trans Canada Trail system even further. This completes a project planned by local volunteers working together as an ad-hoc committee to usher in another spur line on The Great Trail. For the RM of Victoria Beach, the safe crossing of PTH 59 will include maze gates (similar to these at Belair) on either side, which are Provincially approved; culverts on each side of the highway, connecting the trails which will be shored up for safe passage. An observation opportunity along the west side through marsh land, is an added bonus. For those waiting to bike safely to the Moonlight Inn for a treat, this can’t come soon enough. One more hurdle of a Dept. of Highways presentation which has already been pre-screened, and the plans will be ready for a Request for Quotation.

2018 VB Dog Show Results
Here are all the participants:
It was a hot Saturday morning for the annual VB Dog Show. We were pleased to have such a great turnout - 37 dogs graced the stage of the Art Vincent Memorial! From tiny chihuahua’s to giant Newfie’s, there were so many wonderful dogs to see. This year, participants got to enter into one of 5 different categories with a winner picked in each category who then went on to compete for VIP (Very Important Pooch) of the Show. Categories were Puppies, Seniors, Doodles, Pure Bred and Mixed Breed dogs. The judges had a VERY difficult time making their selections as all the dogs were just so cute! Winnie, a 3-month-old Golden doodle won the Puppy category. Lego, an amazing 12-year-old chihuahua won the Senior group. Lucy a beautiful mini doodle won the Doodle category. Gracie, of unknown breed, won the Mixed category and Sophie, a gorgeous English Setter won the Pure-Bred grouping. Sophie, who is 7 years old and deaf since birth, was our VIP winner of the show! Congratulations Sophie and her able handlers Emery and Cooper and all the Stewart family!

Walk for Water
On a sweltering August Day, close to 200 lake lovers from Victoria Beach and surrounding areas, took to the avenues and paths of Victoria Beach and Walked for Water, in support of a healthy lake and the Lake Winnipeg Foundation (LWF). With pledges from their families and friends, people of all ages, several babies and 8 dogs, met at the VB Clubhouse and set forth on a 2.5 Km walk to express their passion for “My Lake – Lake Winnipeg.” The LWF works to address the root causes of harmful algae blooms through research, public education, stewardship and collaboration. As an environmental non-governmental organization (ENGO), it relies on membership fees, grants, donations and proceeds raised through the annual Lake - A -Thon campaign and signature events. Walk for Water is the largest grassroots fundraising event held in support of a healthy lake. This year, VB’s Walk for Water raised over $ 23,000 to provide assistance for education and research projects which help restore and sustain the lake for the benefit of future generations. A big thank you goes out to all the walkers making the trek and to all donors who pledged support. Your advocacy sends a strong message that we at Victoria Beach value and love our lake and want to join forces to make our lake healthy once again. This event is only possible with assistance of a cadre of volunteers, supporters and sponsors. Thanks to: The organizing committee; Deanne McDonald, Sheila Grover, Janet Sampson, Brenda Hearson, Kathryn Dompierre, Karin Boyd, Susan and Matt Hall and Sandy McCaig. A special thanks to; Bob McInnes, Joan Dawson, Jonathon Dart, Lisa Yagi, Susan Flanders, Duncan McCaig, on registration; Gail Henderson, Sheila Grover, Sophie McGoey, Marilyn Davis at the T-shirt table; Kathleen Grover and Linda Kliewer at the draw table and Pat MacRae and Susan Hall on sales; Janet Sampson at the door, Matt and Susan Hall on music with support from the Rec. Assistants and the Rec. Director, Bruce; Route Marshals; The Boyd family, and photographers; Karin Boyd and Kevin Dube; Kelly and Brenda Hearson on prizes, Karin Boyd on freezies; Matt and Susan Hall on transportation, Dunc McCaig on set up and Bill McDonald and Greg Thomas on advertising. Alex Martin, just back from completing his solo 1750 km kayak trip around Lake Winnipeg, graciously helped hand out prizes at the bandstand. Congratulations on your circumnavigation and your promotion of water stewardship. Nancy Sarchuk, Director of the VB Club’s Children’s Arts and Crafts program, with assistance from her daughter Lily, organized a beach craft, on the theme of Lake Winnipeg, during which,
the kids created designs in sand clay discs, which were proudly displayed at the Walk. Way to go kids – our most enthusiastic ambassadors for a healthy lake! Thanks also to the LWF staff; Marlo Campbell (Communications Director), Joanne De Cosse (Summer Outreach Coordinator) and Alexis Kanu (Executive Director), who provided ongoing office support and Chelsea Lobson and Elizabeth Earl McCorrister who helped at the Walk. A big hand goes out to our newly elected VB Reeve, Penny McMorris who officially kicked off the event and Greg Thomas, our amiable MC and strong Walk for Water and LWF supporter. Thanks to The Victoria Beach Club for providing the facility, set up assistance and publicity. Several businesses, individuals and families supported our Walk through their generous donations to the LWF. Thanks to the following businesses: Lakeside Surveillance (Sandra and Kevin Ateah), The Beach Lawyers (Jeff Hirsch, Adrian Frost), Bluewater Lawn Service (Gary and Charles Wingate), Workshop Designs (Nancy Owen), Wayne’s Backhoe Service (Onale and Randy Thomas), GBL Construction (Jason Ateah), DMD Electric (Laurie and Dennis Danwich), Treeworx (Jeff Hughes), East Shore Realty (Cheryl Demidiuk), Ateah Realty, Sunset Spray (Debbie Bell), Hillside Lumber (Colin), Waterford Global (Karen Swysten). A special thanks to our very important sponsors: Johnston Group, Quintex Services, Payworks and Desjardins Financial Security Investments. Victoria Beach’s Walk for Water is just one of several Lake-A-Thon fundraisers happening throughout the summer in the East Beaches. Several Manitobans have supported the LWF by organizing their own events. Saffie’s annual evening of French music and Dessert auction was held on August 11. The Chez Sophie bake sale was back, thanks to popular demand with great baking from our resident chef Sophie McGoey. Beach people treated themselves to a variety of cookies, small cakes, granola and other goodies. Over $500 was raised in support of Lake Winnipeg Foundation. Sheila Grover and Greg Thomas led two Bike Tours of Victoria Beach, to explore the amazing history of our beloved beach community. Our two local historians regaled participants with tales and sights of the past. All donations received were designated for LWF. Even the younger generation got into the act; Sisters Jillian and Erin Doiron with cousin Misha Grover as well as Abby Mason set up a lemonade stand at the tennis tournament making $40 for LWF. The Leslie grandchildren sold cookies at the same time while Isla Harrison and Ilsa Buckholtz made $27.50 at their lemonade stand on the King Edward path. Thanks for all your innovative ideas and being part of the solution through the giving of

time, skills, donations and promotions. Together, we can make the changes required for a clean, healthy Lake Winnipeg and surrounding watershed. Thanks to everyone for making this year’s Lake-A-Thon events so successful. See you next year on the starting line to ‘ Save the Lake.’a

I guess we are getting older! Lol) . We have two rules when it comes to the tournament… have fun and everyone receives a prize

We would like to thank the VB rec staff and parents of the juniors for volunteering to make this event possible, also to the VB Golf Club and staff who are so friendly and have the course in great shape. Thank you to Men’s Tournament/VB Council/Langreen Construction for donating money for our prizes. This year was extremely special as we had a few new timers to the game that played in the event, we would like to point out that even if you are a beginner we will make sure you enjoy the day! Sad to say it’s the end of another season on the water. This year brought new and interesting challenges in the form of wind and waves. Our hearty group collectively explored the elements only to be rewarded with calm and peaceful waters at the end of the season. By far the most interesting event was our paddle with the adventurous Alex Martin. Fresh home from his 27day epic solo tour paddling the entire circumference of Lake Winnipeg, Alex inspired us with paddling tips and stories from lesser known parts of our lake. Thank you Alex!!! Please come back anytime!!! We invite you all to organize your kayaks for summer 2019 and join us in the silence on the water. Many thanks to the VB Yacht Club for giving us a home! Best Spot on the Lot Raffle
There are just a few tickets left for the Best Spot on the Lot Raffle. They are $2.00 each and available at The Parking Lot. Thanks to Kevin and Sandra Ateah and Carol Danwich from Carol’s on Leon for donating the prizes. Thanks also to those who have helped every year with ticket sales: Janet Sampson, Clarice Matthews, Lynne Paterson, Betty and Ab Hancock, Arroll Stewart and Nancy Van Berkel. I have learned a lot about the running of our Doctor’s Office and all our great First Responders. This year we hope to help equip our VB ambulance with a new Zoll cardiac monitor/defibrillator and we have again asked our wonderful doctors what we can supply to help them better serve our community. I have enjoyed running the Raffle for the past 5 years but would like to turn it over to someone new. If you are interested, please give me a call and we can work together next year. Thanks, Betty Lodewyks 204-894-7517

Tennis Wrap-up
Well, another fabulous summer of tennis has come and gone. The weather was awesome, and we experienced many highlights along the way. The Novelty Tournament is set to begin this weekend, and it will mark the official end of tennis programming at our beloved Victoria Beach courts. It has been an absolute honour and privilege to convene the courts once again this summer. As you know, the numerous volunteers are what makes Victoria Beach the incredible place we all love. The tennis courts are no exception. This year, we were very fortunate to have a group of hard-working volunteers who helped keep things running smoothly over the summer season. Thanks to Margaret Meulendyk, & Jane and Bill Turk, for their hard work running this year’s Masters Tennis Tournament. As well, thanks to Andrea O’Connor, Brad Nechwediuk, Derek & Lisa Zeilstra and Philippe Champagne for the ongoing commitment in running the Junior Tennis Tournament. Also, thanks to the intrepid duo of John Heppenstall and Alan Morrish for their work in putting together a fantastic Senior Open Tournament over the August long weekend. Thanks to Duane Lucht, Bruce Eyford and Jeff Hollins for their dedication in making the Novelty Tournament a fun way to end our summer season. Finally, a special thanks to Eamon Wallace who volunteered some of his summer holiday to spruce up the area in and around our tennis shed. Cheers to all who heeded the call of the “squeegee army” and to those who ran the clipboard. Our tennis community relies on these people and others to make it such a special place. These roles are vital to keeping our tournaments running smoothly and your efforts are all greatly appreciated! We would also like to take time to thank our tennis staff who worked very hard all summer handling the kiosk, planning and executing lessons, round-robin and GVS and for their overall dedication and effort into making our courts such a great place to be. This was a year of great growth in this group as all of them took on leadership roles throughout the summer. This year’s crew included Alex Kirbyson, Jared Siragusa, Mark Edmonds, Sam Drybrough, Arabella Zeilstra, Chris Edwards and Thomas Partridge. We are sure to have missed some people along the way, but rest assured, your time and commitment to our tennis community is greatly appreciated. See you next year, folks. Stino Siragusa and Rex Neuendorff

VB Yacht Club News
As the sun begins to set and the waters go calm... so does the Victoria Beach Yacht Club. We had an absolutely amazing, jammed packed year at the Yacht Club. We would not have had the success we did without the help of a number of key people. Ryan Van Berkal (Past Commodore), was instrumental in helping me transition into my first year as Commodore. Ryan also ran our Sailing School flawlessly. Thank you for everything Ryan!!! As Treasurer, AJ Tooley ran the books for us again and he was also the backbone of our executive committee. AJ always had an ear for me to bounce ideas off of and provided me with his ongoing insight and humour. A special thanks to Dan Schott, Jeremy Ritsema and Rick Demetrioff for their ongoing contributions. Recent Team MB Success - Congratulations to club member and Team Manitoba Athlete, Tomas Green who placed placed 4th out of 24 in the Laser Radial Fleet at the Sail Canada - 2018 Sail West Regatta at Wabamun Sailing Club, near Edmonton. AB. In addition to 4th overall, Tomas claimed a silver medal in the 16 & Under age category within the fleet. This is Tomas’s first year in the Laser Radial Fleet and an impressive first major event performance after sitting out the earlier part of the season due to an injury. To see the full results please check out our website www.vbyc.ca Sailing School - Our VBYC Sailing School had another great year, during the 3 of 4 weeks lessons were offered, the club taught over 30 kids, youths and adults the basics of sailing. Our fantastic coaches, Tallon Sparks, Olivia Thompson and Andrew Thompson did an incredible job ensuring everyone had a fun and safe experience. Racing - Shout out to Colin DeGagne & Daniel Derksen for Race Committee and congratulations on attaining your Canada Boater Safety Course. Well done boys! The pessimist complains about the wind; the optimist expects it to change; the realist adjusts the sails.
Social Bridge
August 8th, although a very hot day, we had very cool breezes off the lake, and comfortable temperature in the clubhouse. The afternoon was saved with the arrival of Karl Ruban, we were so glad that he didn’t bolt when he heard three of us squeal with delight when he came through the doors. What a sport! It was a wonderful afternoon of good bridge....thank you also to Marilyn Pike for joining us for the last time as she departs for Victoria. . 1st place was Linda McMillan. 4750. winner of the big prize -- a tooney . 2nd place was Karl Ruban 3830 taking home a looney. Noel Pritchard

obituary
“It’s a peach of a day,” Noel would announce loudly to the sleeping members of his family. In his hands a bag of cinnamon buns and a carton of chocolate milk while being followed by his loyal dog Red. Noel has returned to the cabin after snipping small branches along the roadways for the safety of cyclists and pedestrians. He would always say he was going to make a sign to tell people keep on the right. Noel would either turn on a loud T.V. or toss on the big band sounds of his favorite musician Benny Goodman. Victoria Beach has always been a special place for our parents from traveling up on the train, renting a cabin, to ownership. In 1970, at the end of the season, Noel’s wife Marj spotted the rustic log cabin on the corner of First and Arthur. It was one of the very first structures at VB and filled with small little rooms and several doors. Between the two of them they
came up with a plan to remove walls and place a new entrance at the front utilizing a beautiful set of cathedral-like wooden doors from our mother’s summer home. Both Noel and Marjorie were active members in the local RM council, Victoria Beach Club executive as well as many other committees and community projects over several years. They founded the flea market, moved the book sale to its own day, started the community raffle, canvased for membership, and planned dances. They organized a committee to place street gardens for all to enjoy. Weekends at V.B. were filled with many social functions from theme parties to family and friends’ gatherings. Returning from a party, and typically in the company of others, Noel enjoyed the opportunity to use his strong and powerful Welsh voice to ‘sing the bears away’. We were certain we could hear him all the way up on 8th. Noel was independent, determined and a community advocate. Noel taught us to lead by example and become active in one’s community, enjoy the beauty and serenity of the beach, and be kind to one another. Noel is survived by his son Douglas (Diana Jones), his daughter Barbara (Kevin Dube) and his four grandchildren - Aislin, Dylan, Chayse Dubé and Grayce Dubé. He was a loving father, husband, grandfather and friend to all. Memorial donations on his behalf can be made to the Victoria Beach Club to purchase a bench for all to sit and enjoy magical sunsets. Douglas & Barbara Pritchard
