Walk For Water 2018 Love Lake Winnipeg? This family sure does. Three generations of Rozzi Hughes kids have grown up at VB, with an extended family of grandmothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, parents and kids. Pictured here is the gang as they do the final prep for hosting the Sandcastle Building Contest on Clubhouse beach this month. Although the family has relocated to Alberta, it’s important to them to return each summer. The family is heavily invested in the health of the lake as the kids are all swimmers and have summer jobs. Jeff and Maggie are avid sailors, and Jeff can be seen kite surfing on the windiest days. The family is also invested in the local economy, with Jeff the owner of Treeworx, an arborist service in VB. “We love it here. The lake is the heart our summer experience in this special place. The health of the lake is vital to everyone, including our family’s future here. As Albertans, we recognize that the watershed reaches far to the west, which includes our home province. We support the Walk for Water to build awareness and support for Lake Winnipeg and any agency that works towards its long-term health.” Please join many other lake-lovers and take part in this annual fundraising event in support of the Lake Winnipeg Foundation (LWF) on Sunday, August 12th. (The walk is only 2.5 km!) The LWF educates, advocates, and leads important, science-
based projects aimed at improving the health of our beautiful Lake Winnipeg. Things will get underway with registration at the Victoria Beach Clubhouse beginning at 9:15 AM and the 2.5 km walk will start at 10. As usual, this event will include a prize draw, freezies, a silent auction, and an opportunity to get LWF information and perhaps purchase an LWF gift item or 2. Also, parking in the VB lot will be free for participants that morning. Pledge forms are available at several Victoria Beach locations, at Saffie’s in Albert Beach, online at lakewinnipegfoundation. org -- AND a pledge form will be inserted into each copy of the August 3rd issue of the Victoria Beach Herald. Those who are unable to participate may still support this important cause by pledging money to a walker or simply by making a donation to the Lake Winnipeg Foundation by cheque or online. (Donors are requested to indicate that their donation is being made in connection with the VB and District Walk for Water.) For more information, contact Deanne McDonald (204 756 2911 or deamcd@mymts.net) OR Joanne DeCosse (204 956 0436 or events@lakewinnipegfoundation.org).

August long weekend is here! Who knew it would come so quickly?! Time flies quickly at the beach, especially this year with an abundance of sunshine and the absence of biting insects! My name is Sheri Hyra, Director at Large for the VB Club, and it is my turn to share my thoughts with you this week on behalf of the VB Board. It’s another busy week ahead. The senior tennis tournament will provide lots of entertainment this weekend. Whether you are a competitor or a spectator, it will be time well spent! Stop by the village green on Saturday and pick up some tickets for the Victoria Beach raffle. The proceeds go toward VB Club programs. The prizes are always amazing, with something for everyone. Good luck! The rest of the week will keep the kids super busy. The youth soccer tournament on the morning of Monday, August 6 is always well attended. Please watch the Herald for details on how to enter. On Monday afternoon, kids can take part in the Rogers Rookie Tennis Tournament from 2 to 5 pm. That’s an action packed day! On Wednesday, August 8, the teens can gather at the clubhouse for teen movie night. The junior golf tournament happens on Thursday August 9at the golf course. If you sign

your kids up for all of these activities, you might not even see them this week! I would like to call your attention to the volunteer appreciation event that will be held at the clubhouse on the evening of August 10. If you have helped out at VB in any way, might help in the future, or if you are interested in asking some questions about volunteer opportunities that may suit you, then you are sincerely encouraged to attend. Volunteers make VB the great place that it is, and the Victoria Beach Club Board truly wants to show our appreciation to those who have, do or may contribute! Beverages, snacks and good company will be supplied. On a personal note, my family had the opportunity to host a young guest from Switzerland for 4 weeks in July. He spent several days at VB with us and commented many times on how open and friendly everyone was and how welcome he felt. He also assured me that the beach here was even nicer than the French Riviera, which he has visited several times. It reminded me of how amazing it is here, and how we really do have something special right in our backyard. Enjoy every moment. Sheri Hyra, Director at Large, Victoria Beach Club.

Chez Sophie Bake Sale Cooks up a Storm on 5th Avenue Kudos to the VB community for making our fundraiser a huge success as over $600 was raised in support of Lake Winnipeg Foundation! Delicious cookies and small cakes, the pride of several local bakers, flew off the tables set up in the sunshine at Madame Sophie’s cottage-turned-bake-shop last Saturday. Local artist Robin Jewers sold her delightful cards with VB scenes as well, also in support of the lake. Grateful thanks to our many expert contributors who whomped up their best baked goods for the sale and delivered them safely by bike. You are AWESOME! Special thanks as well to Cathy Rippin-Sisler for being the banker and contributing excellent ideas for next time. In support of a healthier lake. Sophie, Lisa and Sheila

Letter to the Editor
Dear Party Boaters Clearly I missed the meeting where you all decided that the ideal spot to weigh anchor and drink all afternoon was 30 feet off shore at the end of yacht club beach. Because I wasn’t there (my bad) you don’t know that our cottage is just at the top of those stairs and so I tend to sit there when I want to catch a few rays. It’s a sorry stretch of beach – not much sand and really rocky – and, as a result, it tends to be quiet and frankly a bit dull. Not any more thanks to you. Cranked up tunes, raucous, alcohol-fueled blue language conversation and the endless whine of jet skis charging back and forth have turned this sorry patch of sand into a happening place. I will admit to being a bit dismayed with how all of you hop out of the boat on arrival to empty your bladders. You see, after 30 minutes or so of trying to read my book I realize that I have, once again, forgotten my noise cancelling headphones. So I think a little dip in the lake might be refreshing before I head up but I’m unwilling to wade into that sea of pee. But far be it from me to be a party pooper (I do hope you’re not doing that out there). I get that you are just having a little fun. But how about spreading the joy further afield? I’m sure the birds in the lagoon would love to rock out to the sounds of “Love Shack” turned up to full volume. Scott Point is a great spot to mindlessly race back and forth on a Seadoo at full throttle. And I bet the shores of Elk Island could stand a little sprinkle of uric acid. Or here’s a wild and crazy idea! How about dropping that anchor out in the bay far from shore where you can rip it up without bothering a single solitary soul? My little patch of beach would be far less interesting, I know, but I’m willing to take one for the team. Catherine Fast 145 Victoria Boulevard 778-879-8840

VB YOGA Well we have come to our final week of yoga classes. Thank you to all the wonderful instructors that drove up from Winnipeg to guide us in the most lovely variations of this practice. Thank you to our local teachers, Jane & Ruth who so graciously stepped in to lead us. Thank you to the Rec staff, the VB Club team and everyone who helped out on yoga days. To all participants that came to open their bodies, minds, and spirits together 5 times a week, we appreciate you sharing such positive and grateful energy at each class. August 6th - We have Ruth Veitch; Ruth has been sharing her practice for over 10 years and has training in both yoga and pilates. Her classes infuse gentle movement, mindfulness and connection to breath. Encouraging students to listen to their bodies, to feel their breath and cultivate awareness. Students can leave the mat and journey into the rest of the day feeling grounded, inspired and ready to explore their true potential. August 8th & 10th - We come full circle with Savannah Luff, she taught the first 2 yoga dates and is back to teach the last 2 yoga dates. Savannah has been teaching yoga for over a decade at studios, festivals, workshops and retreats. She blends her knowledge of movement, breath-work and meditation with authentic storytelling and humour. Each class is unique and approachable for all yoga levels. It has been a pleasure to coordinate the yoga program this year! Enjoy the rest of your summer and keep practicing that tree pose! Namaste, Mairen (mkops@hotmail)

Yacht Club Dance “A long cruise was it sailor?” This is what the girl you’ve been admiring at the Yacht Club Dance will ask. You will say, “too long.” A romance will ensue, and you will end up a Top Gun instructor with a history of high speed passes – over 5 air control towers – and one Admiral’s daughter. Maybe not, but you could end up a VBYC windsurfer with a history of high speed passes - of the pier - and a high-end date at The Birchwood with a Commodore’s daughter or son. This is the real thing. This is what you have been trained for. This is Yacht Week Croatia consolidated into Yacht Night VB. You probably already have your tickets. Those luffing their sails better sheet in, max out, and set your course towards your favorite local establishment to get a ticket for $20. Call/text AJ Tooley on VHF Channel 16 or 204-941-0162 if you missed all squall advisories and failed to reach port in time. See our posters or the advertisement in this issue for more details. The party starts at 9pm and arriving early will enhance your chances of securing an item from this year’s limited run of Victoria Beach Yacht Club gear. Plus, you will not want to miss even a single bar of Yacht Rock. The Pink Sox and Sunset Soundsystem are the elite. The best of the best. You’ll make them better.

Friday July 27/18 ride featured 4 riders from Alberta, 1 each from Texas and British Columbia and 4 from Manitoba. I know, there’s only 7 in the picture; one had to go back early to go to work and two turned for home at Sandy Bay.
Eight at the Gate, Why we ride! • Because it is fun! Beer, Einfeld’s cinnamon buns, I hate my wetsuit, • Riding is a great anti-depressant and weight loss pill combined, • Don’t have to keep score or book tee times, did I mention beer? • We ride faster than mosquitoes, it is a sport that the whole family can do, • Don’t have to listen to the spin instructor’s music choices, • Riding with a great group of people, running makes my knees hurt,
• Because injured runners need a place to hang out for a while, • Because I want to prove you’re never too old to learn a new sport, • Stay in shape and enjoy the beautiful VB scenery, train for other major events, • I ride for physical fitness and I enjoy it. Check out the bikes we donated to the VB Club Raffle. Buy lots of draw tickets, your child could be riding in style. Our Gran Fondo Gran Colazione (Big Ride Big Breakfast) will be held on Saturday
August 4th. This year we are adding a “Team Time Trial” for the competitive types. 10kms with a handicapping system designed to aid the more senior of our riders. We ride every morning from the gate at 08:00 like it says on the shirt. We always welcome new riders. Call Bob Marshall; VB land line 204 756-8255, Cell 204 261-4292, email jmarsha@mymts.net. We are also on Face-book “Eight at the Gate”.

Farewell Chief MacPherson Hello fellow VB’ers, For those that may not have heard, this summer will be the sixteenth and final year that Stewart MacPherson will be the Victoria Beach Chief of Police. Prior to becoming the Chief, Stewart retired from a full 26 year career as a Constable with the Winnipeg Police Service and in March 24, 2003 took on the responsibility of protecting and serving our beloved community. During his 26 year career, Stewart served in multiple units within the Winnipeg Police Service, but connected strongest with the Community Service Centres where he spent the majority of his time interacting with civilians on the street. Stewart excelled in the community liaison role, focusing his energies on reducing area crime rates and targeting the criminal element present in his ward. In one of his last projects, Stewart targeted street-level drug trafficking operations within the Osborne Village area. Through his efforts, he greatly reduced the frequency of drug transactions that were negatively impacting the area businesses. As the Police Chief in Victoria Beach, Stewart has had a significant impact on the community. My first interaction with Stewart came on a fateful Friday evening when I was 19 years old. I arrived at the cottage around 11 PM that evening and the first thing I did was bike over to the beaches to see if I could find some of my friends. On my way to Patricia beach, I crashed head first into another on-coming cyclist and was promptly trampled by a hoard of teen and young adults, sprinting away from the beach stair case,
yelling, “Run!!!...” “it’s the Cops, the fuzz, the 5-0,” and something about, “Bacon.” As a result of my crash, my bike chain became caught in the pedal of the other bike and I was left trapped at the top of the Patricia beach approach where I stared helplessly at the encroaching menacing flashlight beam of Chief Stewart MacPherson who had undoubtedly created this swarm of fleeing youth. One thing worth noting is that unless he is responding to a crisis, Stewart is never, never, and I mean never in a hurry. So, when I say that I saw a “menacing flashlight approaching,” it was in actuality a slowly sauntering light that took about five minutes to reach me while I frantically tried to untangle my bike. I could hear Stewart cheekily quip to the panicked crowds as he meandered up the bank, “Ok, thanks for coming,” “Great party,” “Get home safe now,” “I think you forgot some of your clothes down at the beach…” He also added a few nonsensical Scottish proverbs told in his version of a Scots’ accent. Stewart walked up to me, introduced himself and asked if I needed a hand with my bike. He didn’t believe a word out of my mouth and assumed that I had been part of the vacating beach crowd, but he was professional, friendly, and extremely nice to chat with. He impressed upon me and the surrounding group, the rules about bon fires and alcohol on the beaches and went on his way. It was a calm approach that opened up conversation and understanding of the police role at Victoria Beach. It was also, as is the case for many young people in the cabin area, my first real CONTINUED ON PAGE 13

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 11 interaction with a police officer. Without knowing, Stewart had left a very meaningful and impactful impression on me. The following summer, I was fortunate to be hired by Stewart to work as a Victoria Beach Constable and I ended up working five summers in the community that both of us care so much for. Though I have countless examples of Stewart’s accomplishments during his time as the Chief, I will share a single example that stands out and defined him as a person and officer. One Spring evening a group of three males were walking the avenues after ingesting an assortment of “adult,” beverages. One of these males decided to perform a feat of strength by lifting a large rock over his head and tossing it into the front windshield of a parked vehicle. At some point during this act, our “suspect,” left behind a very telling clue at the crime scene. A puddle of DNA evidence described as follows: • A 5” in diameter, Hubba-bubba bubble gum coloured puddle complete with Alphaghetti chunks. About an hour later, Stewart, myself and another officer located three males in the sports field. And one of them had a very distinct bright pink stain on his pant leg and about a cup full of half-digested Alphaghetti pooled in the top part of his shoe. Another Clue! After some very bad attempts at bending the truth, the culprits were arrested for mischief and transported to the Grand Beach RCMP detachment where the group came clean and admitted to their wrong-doing. This incident was the first time Stewart implemented community service as a diversion technique for those under the age of 18. The males were all held accountable for their actions and agreed to
pay off their debt to society through community service in VB that summer. In my time with Stewart we successfully implemented this approach as a “learning lesson,” on numerous occasions with very positive results. Common sense, empathy, and professionalism are Stewart’s best strengths when it comes to police work. Community relations were Stewart’s bread and butter, but it didn’t mean that he lacked investigative prowess when it came to more serious criminal matters. Stewart has both been involved with and overseen successful investigations for robberies, assaults, break & enters, stolen vehicles, drug trafficking, impaired driving, and firearms offences all within the VB area. Stewart is also a trained Identification officer (CSI) and his skills have not only been used within VB to solve property crimes through forensic techniques, but in surrounding RCMP jurisdictions as well. Another aspect of Stewart’s presence in VB that cannot go without mention is his involvement with the VB Cops for Kids bicycle relay team who have raised over $100,000 for the Children’s Wish Foundation in his time as the Chief. Whomever replaces Stewart in the upcoming seasons will certainly have some large shoes (or a kilt) to fill. Stewart is a peacekeeper and a community oriented person, who takes pride in making VB a better place. He cares about people and takes satisfaction in knowing that cottagers would wake up in the morning not knowing about some of the issues that were prevented, stifled, or tidied up while they slept peacefully. 14 August 3, 2018 CONTINUED FROM PAGE 13 Over the years, Stewart has mentored countless officers, bestowing upon them his wisdom. This has served as a strong foundation for his, “young apprentices, many of whom have gone on to fulfill their dreams of working for larger police forces across Canada. Over a dozen officers under his tutelage have been employed with the Winnipeg Police Service and have worked in uniformed general patrol capacity as well as detectives in plainclothes investigative units. Other officers under his guidance have moved on to work for the RCMP, the Edmonton Police Service, the Morden Police Service, and the St. Anne’s Police Service. As a cottager, I thank Stewart for the diligent and top notch service he has provided to the VB community. Any cottager would agree that it takes a special person to make an impact while not disturbing the general sense of calm and peace of our cottage paradise. As a fellow police officer, I thank Stewart for his teachings and his guidance. As a person, I thank Stewart for being who he is. I encourage every reader who runs into Stewart this summer to take the time to get to know this highly respected man and thank him for his service over these past years. - Lindsey Stevens, Lifetime VB cottager Former VB Constable Current WPS Detective

The VB Swim Program Session Two of the VB Swim Program is well underway and our fabulous Swim Staff are still gung-ho and still taking new students. Big thanks to our Swim Instructors who are out there on the beach and the Dock every weekday rain or shine: Head Swim Instructor Tess Poulton and the crew –Kayleigh Russell, Duncan Lamont, Katie McClymont and volunteers Ella and Keiran. Twice a summer the staff and conveners get together for lunch and talk about how the swim program is going. It’s so great to hear the enthusiasm of our instructors as they talk about their strategies to work with kids to teach swim skills and water safety. It’s also great to hear their stories of the funny things kids say and do while at lessons. Dead fish have been a hi-lite (or low-lite!) this past month. Kids are totally freaked out by the odd dead fish but kudos to Kieran for grabbing that really gross one out of the water and heaving it away from the swim dock! If the VB swim program had a swimmer of the month (we don’t) the instructors would have nominated two swimmers for July: Lucille and Ernie. Lucille for being a good student and Ernie for being a good sport! The VB Swim Program is an affiliate of the Canadian Red Cross and the Canadian Lifesaving Society. We teach according to the standards laid out in those programs and we work hard to ensure that our program is every bit as rigorous as programs in the city. learning water safety and mastering skills. Moving kids along before they are ready would be irresponsible of us and no favor to our kids. Repeating a level is not a failure…it’s an opportunity. Just one more week of swimming lessons this summer. All the best to the Bronze Medallion and Cross students as they finish up their 6-week program this week with the big exam. Please take the opportunity to give a word of thanks and encouragement to our instructors and volunteers! Alice Russell and Tamara Roehr Swim Conveners

VB Children’s Fishing Derby
Category Biggest/ Smallest/ Most Fish
First Place Will Owens 17 inch Bass 13 inch Bass
The fish pulled a fantastic vanishing act for the 2018 children’s fishing derby. Thirty-five young anglers came out to the pier with rods in tow but somebody forgot to tell the fish the derby was on. In sharp contrast to last years total of forty-three fish caught this year there was a total of two. Will Owens broke the donut at the forty-eight-minute mark of the derby landing a 13 inch silver bass. Shortly after that he pulled what looked to be the fishes older brother out of the water hauling in a 17-inch silver bass. Carter Goetz seemed hopeful the action would pick up and that his golden spot would pay off but unfortunately for him and the rest of the kids the message of free minnows at the pier never seemed to peek the interest of the fish. Nobody caught any more fish the rest of the time. A big thank you goes out to all the adults of the families who helped support the young anglers setting up hooks and rods and safely returning the two fish we caught back to the lake. I would like to thank the VB Rec Staff for their help in running the derby, Kevin Ateah for providing the transportation of the equipment to and from the pier as well as the VB club for providing the prizes for the anglers. I wish everyone an enjoyable rest of the fishing season and better luck than we had today. Jeff Lailey VB Fishing Derby Coordinator

Rent Your Cottage? Your insurance isn’t likely valid.
River Heights and/or Academy Lanes
We recently started renting our cottage as we had long stretches we couldn’t enjoy the cottage and wanted others to enjoy the great spot we all have at Victoria Beach. Not to mention cover the taxes! To our surprise our standard insurance policy on our cottage was not valid, even if we only rented for a week. When speaking with our insurer, they explained that our insurance only applied to the property owners. Because someone other than yourself is using the cottage when you rent, the insurance company cannot assess the insurability of the person. To fix this, you need to speak to your Insurance Agent, they can provide a few options. Also, when I first spoke with my insurer they said it was expensive and difficult to get. I got a second opinion from another provider and they assured me it is not that expensive and can be gotten easily. If you want the name of our insurer, just drop us a note. This addition to your insurance is going to increase the cost to renting, but not by much. Most importantly both you and your renters will take comfort in knowing you’re both properly covered. This is money well spent. If you are interested in having us manage the rental of your cottage, or have questions about renting your cottage, feel free to drop us a note at colleen.henderson@nirvanarentals.ca or call us at 204-452-8760.
If either or both of these strike a chord with you, read on! I recently had the opportunity to acquire and “Reharvest” all of the wood bowling lanes from Academy Lanes before the building was gutted. It is beautiful reclaimed material, far superior in quality to many woods found today. Academy Lanes at 394 Academy Road is not only a historic building and a landmark in our City, but a place where we all had great memories as kids playing video games, bowling, having a birthday party etc. Our hope is to selectively use the material for unique and interesting woodworking projects. Currently, it is being used for a multi tier office space, floating stair treads for a new modern design home in River Heights and a unique desk in a home office. Other requests we are currently considering include Butcher Block Counters, Dining Room tables, Cribbage Board Tables, Cutting Boards, End Tables, and Boardroom Tables. The material is old growth Maple and Clear Pine and due to the construction methods used during the lanes original construction, the wood can be reworked in a number of ways. The good people at Academy Lanes have also allowed us to use their logo, which we can Hot Iron Brand in to the wood if people are interested. If you have a gift idea for someone, or want a special piece for your home or business, please drop us a note at info@nirvanawoodworks.ca or call us at 204-452-8760.

We were very fortunate to have great weather this year for the masters tennis tournament with rain only on the final match of the day. It rained just enough to completely soak the court but, as in VB fashion every squeegee, broom and leaf blower was put to use and the men’s 55+ doubles match was completed. There were 84 participants in the three age categories of 40+, 55+, and 65+ men’s and ladies singles, doubles and mixed. Thanks to the many volunteers that helped with the clipboard and tennis staff that kept the tournament running smoothly. We tried using a dog as a ball boy this year but we are rethinking the idea until further work with dog trainer Mike Manning. Thanks everyone for making this event so successful. A 70th birthday to remember: local endurance athlete takes on personal fitness challenge in support of healthy water John Sawchuk is swimming, cycling and running his way to his 70th birthday to draw attention to the health and fitness of people, and the health and fitness of Lake Winnipeg. John’s goal is to complete 777 kilometres of swimming, biking and running in just 28 days, beginning on July 26 and ending on August 21, his birthday. He is also using his challenge to raise funds for the Lake Winnipeg Foundation (LWF). John lives in Winnipeg and cottages at Wanasing Beach. “My dad built the cabin that my wife and I now own. Our summers have been spent swimming, sailing, boating, water-skiing, fishing
21
and just enjoying the beach. Our children, grandchildren, relatives and friends have also enjoyed cottage life there. However, the health and fitness of Lake Winnipeg has declined significantly over the years, and will continue to do so unless changes are made,” he says. “In tackling my endurance challenge, I hope that others reflect on their own health and fitness and what can be done to maintain and improve it. I also want to increase the awareness of the condition of our Lake Winnipeg, and what can be done to help its health and fitness.”
John has been physically active his entire life. In the late 1980s he began running marathons and in 2005 he completed his first triathlon; he has since participated in approximately 40 triathlons, including the 2014 International Triathlon Union World Championships in Edmonton. The Purejohn70 Challenge will consist of fourday segments each totaling 111 km, repeated seven times as follows: • Day 1: Swim 1 km • Day 2: Cycle 100 km • Day 3: Run 10 km • Day 4: Rest “John’s challenge is a fitting tribute to Lake Winnipeg,” says Alexis Kanu, LWF’s executive director. “Meaningful change requires sustained commitment, even when the challenges seem daunting. I’m encouraged to see a lake-lover making the connection between his personal actions and our collective responsibility for the health of this vibrant, living ecosystem.” The Purejohn70 Challenge online fundraising campaign has launched and John’s goal is to raise $7,777 in donations. Supporters are encouraged to make a special 70th-birthday donation – for every $70 donation received, LWF will send John a birthday card. Online donations can be made through the Purejohn70 Challenge CanadaHelps page, www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/35800. The Purejohn70 Challenge will take place at various locations in Winnipeg and around Lake Winnipeg. More information is available on the Purejohn70 Challenge Facebook page – including updates on planned routes for supporters interested in swimming, cycling or running with John for all or part of a challenge segment.

Top 10 Reasons to win the “Best Spot on the Lot” Here are the top 10 reasons why you would like to win the best parking spot in the lot for the 2019 Summer Season: 10. You will never have to ask your spouse, “What row did you park the car in?; and then have them answer, “I think , maybe, around....?” 9. Friends and family will know when you are at the beach (more Happy Hours). 8. You will never be tempted to squeeze your car on to the end of a row and risk a bike scratch. 7. You are 20 steps to the bike rack. 6. If you don’t need it, you can sell it to the highest bidder or gift it to someone special. 5. You won’t have to worry about whether you are under a light when the fish flies are bad. 4. There are how many rows in the lot now, including overflows A, B, C and D. It only seems like you parked half way back to Winnipeg. 3. You won’t have to tip the taxi driver an extra couple of bucks to keep driving around looking for your car while you press the alarm button on your keys. 2. It’s FREE parking for the season. 1. You will feel good about buying a raffle ticket to support the VB Doctor’s Office and our First Responders. There are 2 other great prizes: 4 free taxi rides, and a $75.00 Gift Certificate to Carol’s on Leon. There are tickets available at the parking lot and we will be selling them on the Village Green on Saturday August 4th. They are $2.00 each or 5 for $10.00. The draw is at noon on Sunday, Sept. 2nd. 30 August 3, 2018 Junior Tennis Tournament
Despite the best efforts of an angry mother nature on day 1, the 2018 edition of the VB Junior Tennis Tournament was once again a huge success! We had the exact same number of participants as last year, 84, and a significant increase in the number of mixed doubles entries, which was great to see! Despite periodic rain and fierce winds, we were able to complete 58 matches on Wednesday. Thursday was a beautiful day for tennis with whispering winds, sunny skies and moderate temperatures allowing us to finish 53 more games and complete the tournament by 5:30pm. This second day of tennis did not disappoint, and many of the matches, particularly the semis and finals were won and lost in tight, highly competitive battles. All players worked hard and showed excellent sportsmanship, particularly in their line calling. The skill level of the players was impressive and the future of tennis is bright at the VB courts! Speaking of the future, it didn’t take much arm twisting to convince a couple of young families to co-organize the tournament next year. Thank you in advance to the Goetz and Hasenack/Bru families! And finally, a huge shout out to the tennis attendants for helping us stay organized at the kiosk, parents and players for squeegeeing, friends and family for coming out to cheer, and to Kick It Dance CONTINUED FROM PAGE 29 Balloon Break Relay 1st Heat 1st Cedrick Schvermann 2nd Jack Holmes 3rd Chloe Wilson 1st Noah Barnes 2nd Eddie Partridge 3rdMaggie Sirrell 1st Brandon Lailey 2nd Isla Partridge 3rdIsabelle Frost 1st Kai Peacock 2nd Paige Edwards 3rdNick Carlson 2nd Soren Wallace 2nd Heat 1st Luca Pura 2nd Kai Veitch 1st Carter Goetz 2nd Pascal Schurmann 1st Oakley |Prusak 2nd Cameron Lailey 1st Colby Bru 2nd Liam Mancer 1stTyson Nemetz 3rd Heat 1st Brooke Oxenforth 2nd Georgia Holmes 3rd Kennedy Stubbs 1st Declan Bowden 2nd Bianca Pura 3rd Andreas Davison 1st Matt Kaul 2nd Mikaela Nimetz 3rd Juan Viera 1st Caitlyn Willison 2nd Izzy Dyck 3rd Joe Lawrence 1st Annika Falkenberg 2nd Ben Dyck 3rd Sam Menec 4th Heat 1st Declan Preston 2nd Asher Ferguson 1st Stella McCaig 2nd Sadie 1st Jessica Preston 2nd Charlsey Goetz 1st Piper Hughes 2nd Rilee Reimann 1st Alexis Bru 2nd Lauren Johnson Coach: Paige Edwards OPEN RELAY 1st Heat 1st Tia Davison 2nd Nick Carlson 3rd Sasha Bargen 1st Alex Kirbyson 2nd Kate Nechwediuk 3rd Lisa Zeilstra 1st Chris Edwards 2nd Ryan Carter 3rd Lauren Johnson 1st Jared Siragusa 2nd Isabelle Frost 3rd Ainsley Clayton 2nd Heat 1st Samuel Menec 2nd Jackson Sirrell 3rd Kennedy Stubbs 1st Mathhew Kaul 2nd Maclean Fish 3rd Annika Falkenberg 1st Juan Vieira 2nd Benjamin Hoole 3rd Brooke Oxenforth 1st Declan Bowden 2nd Chris Derksen 3rd Caitlyn Willison

ObituarY In Loving Memory of Walter Bushuk On Saturday July 7, 2018, Walter’s family and close friends Keith and Susan Knox gathered together to honour a life well-lived at an internment service at the Victoria Beach Cemetery beside a beautiful birch tree. Thank you to Keith Burr for your thoughtful words helping us to reflect on Walter’s life and how much he meant to us. Walter had passed away on October 14, 2017 at the age of 88. For many years Victoria Beach has been a special place for Walter and Jean, his wife of 62 years. Walter and Jean first came to Victoria Beach in the early 1960’s and enjoyed many summers at the cottage socializing, playing and watching tennis and playing bridge, cribbage and donuts. Many strong friendships were born here and flourished over the years. Darrell and Don, their sons, grew up here at Victoria Beach and Walter in recent years was also able to see his grandchildren experience the pure joy of the simple life offered here in the summers. He had a very distinguished career as a cereal chemist and received international acclaim for his research on the biochemistry of wheat quality. Over 40 scientists from 27 countries came to Winnipeg to train with him. Walter was most proud of the legacy of these students, who are now spread around the world working on cereal science. In 2003, he was appointed Member

of the Order of Canada for outstanding lifetime contributions in research and teaching. Walter was an extremely generous, humble, witty, caring, hardworking and determined gentleman. We all remember his warm and welcoming personality, his self-deprecating humour and priceless one-liners, his love of life, and his dedication to family. He lived a full and rich life, overcoming obstacles and inspiring many. He will be missed dearly.
HELEN ELIZABETH (Beth) ANDERSON (nee Thomson) – January 12, 1930 – July 28, 2018 It is with profound sadness, and a tinge of relief, that we announce the passing of our beloved mom, devoted gramma, friend. Beth was deprived of her memories some time ago, and her memories were rich, full of life, full of love. Beth was born in Brandon, Manitoba, and, after living in Winnipeg until 1970, she moved with her family to the West Coast to continue to devote her life to her husband Glenn and their 4 children. She leaves behind her sons Riley (Joni), Todd (Sue), Reid (Kim), and her daughter Nicole (Peter), 14 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and a multitude of friends spread across the country. Beth had so much love to give and she always let the people in her life know how much she loved them. She loved unconditionally, without pretense, without judgment, always with an open door; the ultimate hostess. Beth’s place of joy, her place of peace, was Victoria Beach, Manitoba, where she had a cottage that she maintained over the years and welcomed her family, watched them grow and expand, and will be her final resting place.
