Message from the Vice-President Hello! Allow me to introduce myself! I am Jennifer Engbrecht and I am the new VicePresident this year! Thanks to those who had confidence in me to welcome me to the executive! I have a lot to learn, but am surrounded by amazing and experienced people on our executive so I will hopefully get to learn so much from them! A big thank you (and a big sigh of relief!) to Suzy Cramp who immediately stepped in to return to the role of President again this year after the newest president moved away! I am so pleased to have an opportunity to work with her! By now all our fantastic activities are humming along at the beach! So much to choose from every day, for kids and adults! I love that there is so much for kids to do, with crafts, sports, family activities, movies, the bike hike etc, led by our well-experienced Bruce Sirrell. And for adults, there are so many social activities, as well as lots of ways to keep in shape throughout the summer! Thank you to all the conveners of our activities for stepping up and volunteering to keep these traditions going! Up next, we have the famous Flea Market, run
by Lyndsi da Roza, and the Clean Up afterwards, run by Andrea Pratt McDowell, Jenny Sime, Laura Hilland, as well as myself! Lyndsi has a lot of experience with the Flea Market, as well as Mavis with the Clean Up end of things. Please check the Flea Market post in this Herald for more information! Then on Sunday, there is the beach events, expertly run by the Peacock family, followed by the book sale, run by the Verras and Wilson families. Again, please check their posts in the Herald for more information! Wednesday evening this week, on July 11th will be the annual Ladies’ Night, a surprise movie and a lot of visiting! All of these events can use volunteers, so please check the articles in this Herald if you are able to help! • For up-to-date information throughout the week, don’t forget to follow us on social media: The VB Club is still active on social media (Twitter (@VBClubMB), Facebook (Victoria Beach Club) and Instagram (@vbclubmb). Council Corner
The Victoria Beach golf course is one of our community’s hidden treasures. For some of the members, it is the reason they chose to buy property in this RM. (Others are here for the beaches, the tennis courts, the Beach Club activities or our trails and forests.). It is an asset that over the 95 years of its existence has provided great pleasure to those who use it. In 2017, people were on the course before it opened and by the May long weekend, many were enjoying their 10th or 15th game. Not true for 2018 when we had a late spring. This has been a difficult beginning. When we first turned on the water system to the golf course, zebra mussels were found in the sprinkler heads. To understand some aspects of this, one needs to understand the system. Victoria Beach takes its water from Lake Winnipeg. The water goes from the intake through a long pipe into a wet-well (a 40 foot plus deep ‘holding tank’). There are 2 outlets from the wetwell. The upper outlet goes to the pump-house where the water is treated and sent through the distribution system to our homes. It is checked weekly to ensure our drinking water is safe. The lower valve is open during the summer months. It provides water to the golf course. In the autumn, the valve is closed off so that the water in the wet-well is available to be used by the fire department should there be a need to fill the pumper trucks and take water to the scene of a fire. In 2017, the water pump in the wet-well that provides water to the golf course stopped. When we looked for evidence of maintenance and repair, we found no records. It seems that when the new water treatment plant was installed a decade ago, no one budgeted money for pumping out the wet-well periodically as you would clean your septic tank. The silt, sand, shells and other debris accumulated over the decade. This spring, when the system was turned on , several nozzles that sprayed water onto the greens were damaged by zebra mussels being caught in the system.

Our golf course manager, Karl Hutchison, worked closely with Tim Maunder from the water treatment plant, and our CAO, Andrew Glassco, to problem-solve. The unusually dry spring (the second driest in recorded history) and the unusual heat of June wreaked havoc on the sunny holes – 7, 8, 9 and parts of other holes. By mid to late June we knew that we had to work hard to save our golf course as it is one of the assets of our community. In late June, some of council and our senior personnel put their heads together. No one in our area has the equipment to clear the wet-well. Tim Maunder found a company in Stonewall who had the equipment and could come that day to clean the wetwell. They removed ten years of debris on June 22. Our water treatment plant operators, Tim and Darcy, and our golf course manager, Karl, worked along with the contractor to ensure there was enough man-power to do the job. THANK YOU. On Monday June 25, a sponge was put into the outflow pipe and the water pressure pushed it down the big pipe behind 8th Avenue. Pictures show the water changing from black to clear when the sponge went through. On June 26, the sprinklers were working. Fortunately, in 1992, the golf course manager, John Evans, and the council of the day, installed an automatic sprinkler system which can control the water sprayed on the course overnight. This system will allow the course to regenerate. At time of writing (10 days ago) we hope that the crisis is resolved. Thanks to the cooperation of our employees, we will not need to reseed or re-sod. REEVE AND COUNCIL

The Doctor’s Office
The medical committee has been very busy this past winter. Shopping trips to flooring companies to get quotes and select flooring that will survive freezing and thawing. Several trips were made to the cottage to measure, prepare, and install the new flooring In the living room and kitchen. They also itemized the supplies that were in the office and met with the doctors to determine what additional supplies were needed. The medical committee is looking for a newer white stove, preferably with glass top and self-cleaning feature. If you are changing your appliances, and have a stove in great condition, please consider donating it to the doctor’s cottage. Please call Kathy 204 756 8605. A tax receipt can be issued. Victoria Beach HERALD
The TCT Train has rolled into VB
You may have noticed something new around the beach, tiny signs steering you in the direction of a new adventure! Yes, the Great Trail has arrived in Victoria Beach. The 15 km TCT trail circumnavigates the entire peninsula creating a 15 km loop that will link and connect every corner of our community. If the TCT has reached the shores of VB, it has only been because of the efforts of the Red River North Trail Association. Through the leadership of executive director Dan Lester, The RRNTA has now championed the TCT through 10 municipalities. VB Council passed the routing and the donated signs were put up last fall at no cost. Throughout the process, our ad-hoc committee, the Victoria Beach Trail Association with representation from every cottage association and corner of our municipality has played a significant and supportive role. So what does the TCT mean for VB? It would allow 15 kilometers of safe and enjoyable recreational TCT trails throughout the RM of VB for hiking and biking (non-motorized active living) that would permanently connect and link our community. Get off Manitoba PTH Hwy 59 – and provide a safe commute without cars or traffic between Albert Beach and Victoria Beach. Explore and rediscover the beauty of VB. The TCT Greenway trail would traverse wetlands and marshes, boreal and mixed forest and pristine beaches that rival the finest in Canada. Reward one the most unique and active communities in Canada that throughout its history has walked the talk by choosing a lifestyle that promotes active living over the automobile. Celebrate the Centennial of Victoria Beach in 2019 by promoting an opportunity for recreation, safe transportation, continuing health benefits and a sense of community. This is a true legacy project that would permanently connect and enhance our community for generations to come. The definite advantage of having TCT routing through our community is the opportunity to leverage funding. We are extremely thankful to have a financial commitment from the municipality of VB (current council) and the Federal government (TCT). We are now waiting on the Province to step up to the plate. With funding in place, the first priority will focus on the safe commute between Albert and Victoria Beach. I am sure many have either experienced or seen that wobble and weave of an eight year old with a concerned parent riding be-

Safety is a huge concern regardless of the age. We are pleased to say that we are on our way in resolving this situation by permanently getting off the highway. During the past year, the VBTA has participated in many exciting events in a bid to create awareness and appreciation of our goals. In this vein, you are cordially invited to join us, Saturday, July 7th between 10 AM – 2 PM at Saffies at Albert Beach for the launching of The Great Trail and the official opening of the Beach Exchange Kiosk (across from Saffies) – that will provide education and information regarding the TCT. The event will also include the roll out of the “The Great Victoria Beach Trail Challenge” an exciting family summer event organized and sponsored by what has to be one of the most community-minded stores in our entire Province - Saffies. Thanks Lise! There will also be an upcoming event in August - an interpretative walk titled “If a Forest Could Talk” with details to follow. Please come learn, celebrate and become involved in this great enhancement to our fantastic beach community on Saturday, July 7th at Saffies at Albert Beach 10 AM. If anyone is interested in becoming either a Trail Stewart or an Angel Donor (all donations are tax deductible), do not hesitate to reach out to us. See you on the trails... VB FLEA MARKET
Saturday, July 7 • 12:30pm–2:30pm Victoria Beach Clubhouse
Welcome back to Victoria Beach… our happy place! Once again, here is your opportunity to donate to the Victoria Beach Club by gifting us your treasures. Last year, with the help of our VB Community & all the Volunteers we had the most successful Flea Market ever by raising over $3800 for our Victoria Beach Club. As the new flea market convener last year, I was overwhelmed & privileged to have so many members of the community come out & support this important VB Club event. The success of the Flea Market begins with Volunteers who can provide their own trucks to help with the early morning pick-up followed by Volunteers for unloading, setting-up, sorting, pricing & to work at the Flea Market event in the afternoon.

Environmentally Friendly Clean Up The Clean-up from 2:30pm-5:00pm is always a challenge after the Flea Market. We are looking to have as many unsold items donated to other organizations. Aside from the Spence Street Thrift Shop, the other charitable organizations in Winnipeg and the surrounding areas cannot make the trip to pick up items at the end of the day. We are looking for volunteers with a truck or van to help with the clean-up. You may take the items to a charity of your choice or drop them off at the skate building next to the VB Community Centre on Hwy 59, which will be open after the flea

So if you can help us out with the environmentally friendly clean up so no unsold items end up in the landfill please contact Jennifer Engbrecht who is one of our Clean-up Conveners at jennifersings@ mymts.net. Once again, I hope you’re all looking forward to this year’s Flea Market & I’m confident with the ongoing support and encouragement of our wonderful VB community, our 2018 VB Flea Market will be a resounding success for our Victoria Beach Club! Zebra Mussels:
July 6, 2018
15
A Review and Update
The presence of zebra mussels on our famously beautiful beaches may have brought forward feelings of frustration and despair to many cottagers over the past year. Here is some information on zebra mussels from the Lake Winnipeg Foundation and Scott Higgins from the International Institute for Sustainable Development. What are zebra mussels? Zebra mussels are small, brown-striped, D-shaped mollusks. Their hair-like filaments (byssal threads) allow them to attach to hard surfaces like rocks, boats, docks, and water-intake pipes. They are an invasive species that multiply very rapidly – one mussel can produce a million eggs during a spawning season. Where did they come from? Zebra mussels originally came to North America from Eurasia in the bilge water of ships. Current information suggests that the zebra mussels in Lake Winnipeg came from North Dakota via the Red River. Zebra mussels can spread by water currents but are most often transported by water users (e.g. boaters) who don’t realize the mussels have attached to their equipment. Why are they a concern? In addition to dead shells washing up on beaches and mussels on rocks making footing treacherous while swimming, there are other potential concerns. The growth of zebra mussels on water infrastructure (e.g. drinking water pipes) is problematic, requiring regular maintenance. Zebra mussels remove algae from water, which may seem like a good thing for our lake – unfortunately, they consume good algae that fish and insects eat, and not bad blue-green algae that often plague our beaches. This may negatively affect Lake Winnipeg’s fishery and can lead to an increase in the size of blue-green algae blooms near the shore. What can we do? No approaches have successfully eradicated zebra mussels from a lake the size of Lake Winnipeg. As such, we now must focus on preventing the spread of zebra mussels to other water bodies throughout the province by decontaminating boats, boat trailers, and other gear before moving them to another lake or river.

It is illegal to possess or move invasive species like zebra mussels; consequently, it is currently illegal to remove their shells from our beaches. (So wearing water shoes is recommended!) However, the province is currently working on a policy for the disposal of zebra mussels that will allow cottagers to do so. If you have any questions about this policy, please contact Manitoba Sustainable Development at 1-87-STOP AIS-0. (1-877-867-2470) In anticipation, some Victoria Beach cottagers have already started developing tools to help separate zebra mussel shells from sand so they may be cleaned from our beaches in the future (see image). The Lake Winnipeg Foundation is interested in hearing your ideas on how to minimize the impact of zebra mussels on your beach experience! As zebra mussels may cause an increase in blue-green algae blooms, we must continue to support the efforts of the Lake Winnipeg Foundation towards decreasing phosphorus in the lake. This will reduce the overall potential for blue-green algae blooms to occur. To support the Lake Winnipeg Foundation, join us for the 2018 Victoria Beach and District Walk for Water on Sunday, August 12th. Pledge forms are available at several Victoria Beach locations, at Saffie’s in Albert Beach, and online at lakewinnipegfoundation. org. For more information, contact either Deanne McDonald (204 756 2911; deamcd@mymts.net) or Sandy McCaig (204 756 8855; sandy.mccaig@gmail.com).

Kayaking Meet Up (Sunset Paddle)
The kayak group is an informal, fun and friendly meet up. Open to adults (18 and over) and youth accompanied by a parent, we launch each week from the beach in front of the Victoria Beach Yacht Club on ‘sailboat beach’. Our goal is to get out on the water on a regular basis and enjoy Lake Winnipeg’s calm water and spectacular sunsets. The minimum requirement for participation is that you’ve had some experience and can keep your boat moving forward on a straight course. For safety reasons, a rescue boat and trained water rescue instructor from the sailing program accompanies the group to ensure no one is left behind. This also allows us to go wherever we want to paddle. If you would like to join us, please come early, prepare your kayak and be ready to paddle at 6:30 pm.
Thus far, participants have to supply their own kayaks but we want to grow the program to be more inclusive. If you have a kayak that you are maybe storing and not using, please consider donating it to the Victoria Beach Yacht Club for use in the kayaking program. It would be greatly appreciated!
Meet-up dates for the summer of 2018 are: Thursdays, July 5/12/19/26 and August 9/16 Please call Susan Hall 756-3318, Sheila Grover or Greg Thomas 756-2367 with any questions. For more info, please go to the Victoria Beach Yacht Club website at https://www.vbyc.ca/

Over the years our riders have participated by donating their “time, talent and treasure” to many great bike/lake related causes. The list includes The VB Police sponsored Children’s Wish Ride, our local VB Community Club Raffle and the Walk for Water. We have participated or contributed to Habitat for Humanity, Gear Up For CF, MS Ride, Ride to Conquer Cancer, Ride Don’t Hide as well as World Bicycle Relief. We will be collecting once again for the junior mountain bikes to donate to the VB Community Club silent auction. These bikes will be purchased with the generous assistance of Walter Jozwiak, owner of Lifesport on Pembina. The bikes will have a twoyear warranty and will be “VB Compliant” with bell and registration sticker. Please give what you can spare to these worthwhile causes. Contact me to contribute to the VB Raffle opportunity, Clyde Raven VB Police for the Wish Ride and direct to the other organizations. Our group leaves from the “Gate” daily at 08:00, as it says on the shirt. We ride highway 59 to Albert Beach then Traverse Bay Rd, west to Hillside Beach and down Lakeshore Rd to Lester Beach. The pace (25 – 35km/h) varies with the composition and size of the group as well as with the discussion topic of the day. Some days we will add some hills (ok “speed bumps”) and distance for people training for longer more challenging events. New riders are always welcome. Come and join us! Hi I’m Tess, and I’m back for another great year of swimming! I just finished my first year of sciences at the University of Manitoba, while running track for the Bisons. I’m super excited to spend summer eating dream cookies and making memories. If you see me out and about VB, come and say hi! I hope to see everyone at the swim dock!
Hi I’m Kayleigh, I just finished my first year at The University of Winnipeg in International Development Studies followed by a French immersion program at Université de Québec à Trois-Rivières. I’m looking forward to another summer of teaching swimming lessons with a vigorous environmental component. See ya at the beach!
Hi I’m Kate, I’m new to the swim program and exited for a great summer of swimming lessons. This year I finished grade 11 and worked as a lifeguard and swim teacher in the city. I’m very excited to spend this summer eating happy face cookies and jumping off the pier!
Hi my name is Duncan Lamont. I am 16 and a half years old and just finished grade 11 at St Paul’s high school. I volunteered with the program last summer but this is my first summer as a full swim instructor and I’m looking forward to a great summer of swimming.

We took a cruise on the Love Boat at last year’s 30-plus dance and we’re going to continue in a Caribbean vein this year with “Jamaica Me Crazy.” The Hit Boss Band returns to our little piece of paradise to play the hottest songs by Bob Marley & The Wailers, UB40 and Jimmy Cliff. You might even hear some steel drums. If you’ve never had the pleasure of visiting the Caribbean, the 3 million-degree temperature inside the VB Clubhouse is a reasonable substitute. You’ll be hungry and thirsty, so we’ll be serving jerk chicken and rum-flavoured drinks. There will also be a vegetarian option.

Tickets are $45 each and are available from Geoff Kirbyson (204) 771-0973 and Suzy Cramp (204) 292-0397. This event sold out 10 days before last year’s dance so please do yourself a favour and get your tickets early. Unfortunately, there is no prize for the most original excuse for forgetting until the last minute. And while we appreciate your effort if you organized this dance back in the 1980s, it does not entitle you to free admission for life. If you buy a ticket, however, we will welcome you on stage for one song to play the cow bell.

The Last VB Bike Race
Ladies Golf Tournament 2018
Now that I have your attention. This will be the last year for our family to coordinate the VB Bike race. After 5 years it is time to hand it over to another family. If you are interested in taking over and want to learn the ropes this season let me know. This year’s race will be held Saturday July 14th at the sports field. Registration will start promptly at 9:30am, all kids aged 4-18 are welcome. Awards will be presented to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners for boys and girls in the following age categories: 4 & 5 year olds (short course) 6 & 7 year olds (medium course) 8 & 9 year olds (medium course) 10 to 12 year olds (medium course) 13 to 18 year olds (long course) If you are not familiar with the bike courses, not to worry - all the courses will be colour coded with signs along the road so even the youngest of riders can follow. More detail on the courses will be outlined next week. To keep things running smoothly, we would like approximately 13 adult volunteers on race day to assist with keeping the riders on track. Please call Todd Hyra at 204-782-8906 if you can help on race day. All riders must wear a safety helmet and we strongly suggest wearing proper clothing and footwear - loose gravel and pot holes can make the courses challenging and dangerous at times. Trophy winners from last year, please return the trophies to Todd or Sheri Hyra at 317-3rd Ave. no later than Friday July 13th. Look in the Herald next week for more information on the Bike Race and make plans to be at the sports field for Sunday morning. See you then. We look forward to a fun and safe race! Thanks Coordinators The Hyra Family
Don’t miss out on the annual Ladies VB Golf Tournament on July 25 — sign up now at the golf course! Space is limited and the draws (8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.) fill up quickly to this popular and fun nine-hole event. Create your own team or sign up as a single; it’s a great way to meet new friends. This year’s tournament fee is only $20 — an excellent deal as it includes a prize-filled wind-up party at the Victoria Beach Community Centre on Hwy 59, with delicious treats from the Merry Makers. Registration at the golf course is open now just until noon July 23. All participants must be 18 and over, and payment is required at registration (non-members also pay $15 green fees). The golf tournament committee has been out soliciting donations for prizes and silent auction items, which can be dropped off to any of the organizers below, or at the golf course up to July 20. Donors are, as always, gratefully acknowledged at the event and in the Herald online and in print. All proceeds from this fun beach event go to three local causes this year — our own V.B. Community Centre, Nova House Inc. and the East Beaches Animal Shelter. Don’t forget to tuck a little cash away to compete in the putting contest and enter our silent auction — it’s shaping up to be another year of great stuff from our local sponsors. Art Thursdays
If you would like to attend one of the classes listed below, please contact the artist. This will give the artists enough time to purchase supplies for the students. Classes with a minimum attendance will run only if the minimum is met. Last year the clubhouse was buzzing with creative artistic energy. All ages and skill levels are welcome to attend. If you don’t have a club membership a $5 day pass can be purchased at the door. Each Thursday there will be several artists all teaching at the same time. Please stop by and check it out. Any Artist/Craftsperson who would like to teach a skill are encouraged! Email me at artthursday@shaw.ca to discuss your ideas to teach. You don’t have to be a professional artist to teach a class. Here is a list of all of the artists confirmed so far for this year. Please contact each artist directly to attend their class. Some classes are full and have a waiting list.
