President’s Message How time flies? The summer is coming to an end, as is my term as President of your Victoria Beach Club. Who knew that while at a party, on a deck, at a cottage, at VB, that my VB experience would change when two lovely ladies (Maureen Neuendorff and Brenda Vielhaber) approached me and convinced me (this didn’t take much) to take on the role of Vice-President with the Victoria Beach Club. Over the last four years I have met tremendous people and learned just how much work goes into creating the VB experience each summer. The volunteerism at VB is nothing less than amazing – year after year people step up and do extraordinary work on behave of the community for the community. My heartfelt thanks to each and every individual who has volunteered to run a program or activity – and those behind the scene (often family and friends) – over the years. My deepest gratitude also to those who cannot volunteer, but contribute by donating funds and services when needed. YOU do all this without recognition or reward. Truly amazing!! If I may, I would like to acknowledge the hard work and effort by some key people who have taken on very challenging roles: Pam Beazley and Lise Simonsen for membership; Tamara Roehr for Swimming; Bryan and Lisa Yagi for Tennis; Jill Kirbyson and Shauna Filuk

for Special Events; and Kevin Dubé and Barb Pritchard for the Herald. Great big thanks to you all on behalf of the entire VB community! I will take this opportunity to also thank the people I have had the pleasure of working with on the Board. They say that “behind every man there is a great woman” – In my case, each year, there have always been 4 great women (plus my wife – of course!). Maureen Neuendorff, Brenda Vielhaber, Wendy Derksen, Leslie Sarchuk, Cathy Finnbogason, and Suzy Hester – you all work tirelessly for the sake of the community and give so much of your time throughout the year. It has been my privilege to work with you all and you all have my utmost admiration as individuals on and off the Board. I have truly enjoyed working along side you all and I will be leaving with your friendship as my biggest reward! Lastly, I want to thank my wonderful wife (Marnie) and sons (Andrew and Matthew) for their love, support, and understanding while I served on the Board, because it took me away from some family time over the years. Please forgive me if I forgot to thank anyone, it was not intentional I assure you. I will continue to serve the VB Community in other roles and I will always look forward to seeing you all on the avenues! With sincere thanks, Anil Kaul

About the Victoria Beach Herald

One of the longest continuously publishing community newspapers in Canada, now finishing our 90th year, the Victoria Beach Herald is a service of the Victoria Beach Club. The Herald prints ten issues each summer on Fridays from late June to mid August. The Herald welcomes submissions from readers focused on family events, beach happenings, community issues, etc. Letters to the Editor are always welcome: they must be signed with the author’s name and be written from the perspective that many people read the Herald, including youngsters. Submissions should be sent via email to vbherald@shaw.ca. Those without access to email can place written submissions in the VB Herald mailbox behind the cash counter at the Victoria Beach General Store. Submission deadline is 4PM Fridays with the exception of VB Club event convenor submissions for events occurring on weekend days. We take this opportunity to thank our readers. All of what it takes to put this publication in your hands is worth it when we see people scouring its pages from cover to cover all over Victoria Beach. Thank you all, and we look forward to the 91st year of the VB Herald! Barb Pritchard and Kevin Dubé Editors, The Victoria Beach Herald

VB Doctor’s Office Update

Council would like to thank Kathy Brydon and her medical committee for their hard work last winter and over the summer. They found doctors who were willing to come to Victoria Beach and provide medical services to the community. This summer our doctors included Doctors Katherine Kearns, Carry Martens-Barnes, Joan Swain, Garth Campbell and Belynda Salter-Oliver. We certainly appreciate the hard work of everyone. In this last Herald, we would like to thank Dr. Garth Campbell for his services the past three weeks. Having the same doctor in place for a longer period of time certainly helps with follow up. We would also like to welcome Dr. Belynda Salter-Oliver who will be with us until September 6th. Once again for the benefit of newcomers to the beach, the Doctor’s cottage is at 124 Birch. The phone number at the doctor’s office is 204-756-6305. There are 2 clinics Tuesday through to Saturday. Clinic hours are 9:30 to 11:30 and 5:30 to 7:30. On Sunday and Monday there is one clinic only from 5:30 through to 7:30. Remember to bring your Manitoba Health card with you when you go to the Clinic. RMVB COUNCIL

Hope you can join us.

Victoria Beach HERALD

Novelty Tennis Tournament 2015 What a weekend of fun tennis! This year’s new “Novelty” rules were very well received. The wooden racquet play was particularly entertaining. As well, it was great to see all of the happy faces during our “mystery events.” Wipeout has quickly become a VB favourite! The laughs, smiles and enthusiasm on display were great to see. I would like to thank all of the participants who came out to have fun at our annual event. Just further evidence of the amazing tennis community we have here at Victoria Beach. Once matches were underway, the players put on an impressive display of fun tennis, along with some amazing shot-making and rallies. The “novelty rules” added a bit of humour to the competition. On Saturday, each player played their first service game with a wooden racquet. Needless to say that made for some rather intriguing serves! On Sunday, the first four games of each set were played with the red and yellow low bounce balls. This created some excellent rally points and some awesome volleys at the net! Many thanks to those who helped make the weekend a success. It is a privilege to be a part of such a great community of tennis players. Thanks to Stuart Juzda, Allan Morrish and Robert Kennedy for supplying the wooden racquets. They added a little nostalgia and fun to the event. Special thanks to the Vielhabers. Herb’s antics over the weekend continue to entertain and were appreciated by all! Thanks to Brenda for assisting with the “number crunching” and getting the matches out on the courts promptly. I would also like to thank the court attendants, Julia Lucht and Cole Paige with assisting with set-up. As well, thanks to Stuart Juzda and Bryan and Lisa Yagi for their assistance in making the teams and for helping out over the weekend. Special thanks to Bryan and Lisa Yagi, for their dedication to making our tennis club such a thriving place over the summer. You have significantly improved the tennis experience for all ages and skill levels through your innovative approach and commitment. All of us at the Victoria Beach Tennis Club owe the two of you our deepest gratitude for all you do for our community. Here are the winners of the various categories for the Victoria Beach Novelty Tennis Tournament 2015: Spirit of Sportsmanship Award: Elly Black Tag Team Singles: Brad Nechwidiuk, Barb Pritchard, Bruce Eyford, Allan Morrish, Alan Adamson, Brent Prusak, Leslie

Super Soccer Sunday 2015

It was a beautiful day to showcase the beautiful game down at the sports field. We had a record number of players (approximately 170), and a great competition began at 9:00 am with the Squirts Division which was won by Team Maggie. Way to go! The Youth Division winners were VB United. This team was an ensemble of single entries that came together as a team and won the championship! Congratulations! The Open Division had a record setting 10 teams which made the draw a challenge for your humble convenors. The play was very competitive with some great skill on display. Congrats to The Significant Others who were undefeated on their way to the championship. Well done! Our thanks to the Rec staff and Bruce Sirrel for their support and help throughout the day. Also to Rob Hester for refereeing a game for us. Thank you to Austin Siragusa who helped with field marking and refereeing while also playing. Now that is a demonstration of the good old VB volunteer spirit. Also thanks to Dennis Ludwig for supplying “fuel” for the convenors. The cinnamon buns and drinks were greatly appreciated. Until next year. Rex Neuendorff and Stino Siragusa

Best Spot on the Lot Raffle There are still tickets available for that first prize of the prime parking spot in the parking lot. No more worries about where you parked your car or whether you are under a light and covered in fish flies. Second prize of 4 taxi rides would sure come in handy on one of those rainy evenings. Thanks again to Kevin and Sandra Ateah for donating both those prizes and their staff at the parking lot office for selling the raffle tickets. Thanks also to Carol Danwich for generously donating the 3rd prize of a $75.00 Gift Card to Carol’s on Leon. Carol increased the prize from $50.00 last year. Please stop by her Gift Shop (just off 59 highway, south of Traverse Bay Corner) and check out all the wonderful gift ideas she has. Last year I met with our wonderful First Responders to ask about their work in the beach, Herald article in Issue #7, 2014. This week I sat down with Kathy Brydon to learn about the Victoria Beach Community Medical Committee, who they are and what they do. The committee was first established by the V.B. Council in the fall of 2013 to see about the reopening and continued running of the Doctor’s Office. That first year, the members were Candice Bishoff, Kathy Brydon, Bruce Morrison, Garett Surcon, and Dr. Peter Duke. This year the committee members are Kathy Brydon, Garett Surcon and Mike Mason. They report to the V.B. Council. The committee is responsible for securing & scheduling the

doctors, identifying & purchasing the required equipment and consumables. This year the committee was able to add a pharmacy component to the medical services. They are also responsible for maintaining the cottage at 6th Ave. and Birch (it is owned by the municipality) which includes furnishings, upgrades, spring cleaning and improvements. The doctors who staff our clinic are not paid by the municipality but bill Manitoba Health. In 2014 the office was staffed for 7 of the 9 weeks with the doctors attending to over 350 patients. Getting the office & cottage up running again, improvements, & the basic supplies, for the 2014 season came in under the budget of $2,500. This year, 2015, the office will be staffed for 9 of 10 weeks. Doctors are on track to see more patients than last year. This year the expenses focused on more needed equipment. The committee would like to purchase a new lamp & a few specialty items at just under $1,000. If you are interested in volunteering to help in any way or would like to join the committee, please contact Kathy Brydon at 756 2739. You can also show your support of the Doctor’s Office and the great work this committee is doing by purchasing your “Best Spot on the Lot” Raffle tickets. The cost is $2.00 each and they are available at the parking lot. Proceeds to the V.B. Medical Assistance Fund. Betty Lodewyks

VB Community Medical Committee

You have all heard the quote “The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” Well, that is what happened this summer here with our community medical community. Such a big thank you goes out to so many. Thanks to our Reeve and council: Brian, Kathy, Linda, Penny and Gord; CAO Shelley, and office staff Tammy and Lynne, who each supported our committee helping to make this year’s medical services even better than last. (Mention the word ‘pillow’ and watch the expression on some of the councilors’ faces. Or maybe don’t.) Thank you to Doctors Kearns, Martens-Barnes, Swain, Campbell and Salter-Oliver, who staffed our clinic 9 of the 10 weeks this summer. However; there are 2 other members of your medical committee who need to thanked in such a big way. Meet Garett Surcon and Mike Mason, the almost silent partners who have worked with me throughout this past year. They not only have brought their expertise, knowledge and support to our committee, but also accepted late night emails and phone calls from me when I thought I could not solve one more problem. Thank you so much Mike and Garett. I was not a committee of 1. Thank you to the beach community who helped us by driving, sewing, cleaning and fixing. And an extra big thanks to public works for all they do for us. Kathy Brydon

VB Club Membership That’s A Wrap!

It is hard to believe that August is drawing to a close - the beach is quieter, the sun is setting earlier, and all the VB Club activities have taken place. It feels like a long wait until next summer’s Masquerade, Dog Show, Sport’s Day, etc., but the good news is that it will all happen again in 2016! We are pleased to say that a strong team of four has come forward to lead Membership and get activities rolling with the July long-weekend Membership Drive. Please support Monica White, Jen Campbell, Heather Wallace and Darcie Reimer as they take on this role for 2016. We have really enjoyed getting to know so many people through working on the Membership Team, and are pleased to report that even without a July long weekend, membership sales were pretty strong this year. The Club sold 561 memberships ($28,050), 705 tennis tags ($10,575), and 59 day passes ($295), and received donations of $6,280.15, for a total of $45,200.15 raised. Last year, the Club raised $45,010 with sales of 584 memberships, 689 tennis tags, and donations of $5,475. Thank you to everyone for their support over the last three years, particularly the canvassers, the tennis, library and swimming staff, the Club Executive, the Information Booth staff, our families and previous convenor Jenny Hasenack Bru. We could not have done it without you! See you next year! Pamela Beazley Lise Simonsen

I would like to thank the staff and all the volunteers that helped at the golf course this year for there hard work in making the course an excellent place to golf and visit. East Beaches Senior Scene News

As the summer of 2015 inexorably winds down, begrudgingly yielding to the cooler winds of autumn, we at the Senior Scene can reflect on a busy, productive and fun summer. Besides the many regular programs offered to both members and nonmembers, we also hosted catered and non-catered weddings, RM Council meetings, a craft sale and are looking forward to hosting two special anniversary receptions. We have completed an outdoor barbeque shelter and recently received a federal grant that will permit us to build a back door ramp, a new automatic door system for the rear of the building, a handicap washroom in the basement and upgrade the basement lighting. The latter upgrades are in anticipation of building a wood work shop and lounge/games room in the basement. We still have one major community event in the fall, the 5th annual Fall Supper. This event is open to everyone so if you are planning to be at your home or cottage on Saturday, September 26th and would like to avoid cooking, then why not bring your family to the Senior Scene. There will be two sittings, the first at 5:00 pm and the second at 7:00 pm. The cost is $15. Tickets will be available at the VB Store, Senior Scene and Saffie’s Store. This is a sell-out event so get your tickets early. Finally, if your summer vacation is coming to an end, rather than getting down, think wistfully about next summer and our major fundraising event, a gala Lobster Fest. What better way to start off a new season, than to meet with old friends over a glass of wine and a scrumptious lobster meal. This is another sell-out event so mark June 11th on your calendar and watch the local bulletin boards for ticket availability.

Walk for Water 2015 was another huge success, VB!

This year, VB’s Walk for Water raised $15,600 to provide assistance for education and research projects to help restore and sustain the lake. A big thank you goes out to all the walkers making the trek, and individuals, families and businesses who supported the Walk through their generous donations and pledges to the LWF. Your involvement sends a strong message that we at Victoria Beach love our lake and want “a clean, healthy Lake Winnipeg and watershed now and for future generations.”

VB Country Market As this is the last Herald for the season, we want to let you know how much we appreciated allowing us to put a little notice in about the market. And the vendors want to say a big thank you to everyone who came out, rain or shine, to make it a special event every Saturday. Thanks also to Al Rear and Brian Bowden who helped with setting up, putting out signs and those who were commandeered when they could not be there. Did you see the size of those monster pancakes? Somebody must not have gotten their measurement conversions wrong. Qudos to the crew, led by Pauline Einfeld were terrific, serving up breakfast and coffee to the hungry shoppers – especially while they wait for the Veggie Truck to swing into place just in time. (I was told they are picking right up until the truck leaves). It looks like lunch hour at Tim Hortons! And we sure have fun doing it. Thank you and we hope to “See you at the Market” again next year. Margaret Haddad and the 39 Vendors.

I would like to thank all who supported PritchArt Wear Clothing & Design this summer. All of my clothing items are made in Manitoba and are from my own bright and whimsical original artwork. If you would like further information on my Fall/ Winter clothing I can be reach at info@pritchardartwear. com or follow along Facebook at Pritchard ArtWear.

PS: The Market will run until the end of August, so keep showing up, because we will. Thank You for your business and another great summer at VB! Victoria Beach Restricted Area
