Well the masquerade has passed, along with the fishing derby and the 800 metre swim. We’ve danced into the wee hours in our western wear and the open tennis tournament has wrapped up. Whatever are we all going to do for the rest of the summer? One option is to gather up the gang and watch another beautiful sunset at Victoria Beach.

THANKS TO THE EMPLOYEES OF PUBLIC WORKS. The residents of Mc Cord Avenue have extended their thanks to the staff of Public Works for the recent replacement of the stairs to the beach. They are happy that they once again have access to their little beach. Now launching of kayaks is safe. The residents of Wanasing will also be happy to see the third set of stairs. They will make access to the beach so much easier. Once again, thanks to the Public Works employees for a job well done!

CIVIC ADDRESS SIGNS. Our Emergency Measures personnel encourage both seasonal and permanent residents to invest in proper green civic address signs for their dwellings. At night, the reflective signs stand out clearly. In case of emergency, First Responders can find your home more quickly.

Pick up an application form at the Seniors’ Scene on Monday, Wednesday or Friday from 8:30 to 4:00, from the Victoria Beach store or from Saffies. Fill out the form and return it with a cheque for $50.00. In about four weeks, your sign will be installed by volunteers from the Seniors’ Scene.

And here is another suggestion, if you live on a corner lot, you might consider ordering two signs, one for each entrance.

DEFIBRILLATORS - AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) are present at the

beach. There is one at the Seniors’ Scene, one at the tennis court, another at the Victoria Beach Club house . The new Victoria Beach Sports Club also has a defibrillator. It is taken out to the sports field when there are activities there.

The Police and the Victoria Beach Fire Department also have AEDs; so when you call 911, there is help nearby.

MUNICIPAL ACT – The Municipal Act outlines the purpose of municipality, the duties, powers and responsibilities of the CAO and Council. The Act sets rules for financial administration, By-laws, and corporate powers.

It sets rules for taxation, tax and debit collection and legal matters. In short, the Municipal Act sets the procedures that we, as Council, are expected to follow.

BICYCLE PATH NEAR HIGHWAY 59. Did you know that there is a path that runs from the recycling bins by the parking lot to the Municipal Works yard? It provides a safer way to travel from the gate area to the Post Office or Sports Club. You do not need to risk riding on the highway. And on your return trip, you can ride the Evergreen Trail that runs from behind the Public Works yard to the Golf Course parking lot. From there you can either take the road to Patricia or the path to Alexandra.

One of the longest continuously publishing community newspapers in Canada, now in our 90th year, the Victoria Beach Herald is a service of the Victoria Beach Club. The Herald prints ten issues each summer on Fridays from late June to mid August.

The Herald welcomes submissions from readers focused on family events, beach happenings, community issues, etc. Letters to the Editor are always welcome.

Submissions should be sent via email to vbherald@shaw.ca.

Those without access to email can place written submissions in the VB Herald mailbox behind the cash counter at the Victoria Beach General Store. Submission deadlines are end of day Fridays with the exception of VB Club event convenor submissions for events occurring on weekend days.

~ Letters to the Editor ~ We are concerned about our tax dollars and would like to make you aware of the following: 1. At the council meeting on July 21, Council did NOT give second reading to Borrowing By-law 1557 which is to borrow $1.7 million for a new 3 bay Public Works building ($1.55 million plus contingencies). An additional cold storage garage is now being considered which is not included in the above noted figure of $1.7 million.

2. The MB Municipal Board is required to authorize municipal borrowing by-laws. The Board met on July 23 to consider RMVB borrowing By-law 1557. Due to the objections filed by over 200 people, the Board did not authorize By-law 1557 and has scheduled a Public Hearing in September (date and location to be confirmed). Council can avoid the Public Hearing by cancelling By-law 1557 which we feel is the prudent course of action.

3. After further investigation, we remain confident that a new 4 bay Public Works building that meets the needs of public works AND meets current building and new energy code can be completed for less than $1 million. This is a long way from the $1.7 million currently proposed by council. We will provide a detailed quote to Council at the August 18 Council meeting at Victoria Beach.

this level. And definitely, I can’t even begin to think about a life without cars. Rather, a life full of ridiculously lovable bikes.

So I don’t think about VB. Until I arrive in VB. Then, it takes about 5 minutes to remember what I love about this place. And about ten minutes before the wave of relaxation takes over my somewhat anxiety-ridden mind. A day later, I wake up for a ride with the 8 At The Gate crew followed by a cup of bakery brew (and a dream cookie) to enjoy on the Manning’s couch. At this point, I’ve arrived and I remember what makes this place, a seriously special place to me.

These are the observations of an outsider. I married into a VB family. And have been fortunate enough to come here for the last nine years in a row. I have friends here. I have a bike here. I now have spent the night on Elk Island (Thanks Dubie and Mike). I feel at home here.

Dear VB (and the entire Manning family), thanks for welcoming me year after year. I want you all to know how thankful I am to you for sharing this wonderful place. A place too difficult to comprehend, describe or even look forward to… so I won’t even try.

Three Stages of Learning

According to Clay Ballard from Top Speed Tennis, there are three stages of learning when it comes to sport. These are the stages we all go through as we participate and try to get better in a given sport.

The first stage is called Consciously Incompetent. In this stage the player realizes that there is something they are doing wrong or improperly and that they can improve on it. For example, realizing your technique isn’t correct and that it can be improved.

The second stage is called Consciously Competent in which players think about the correct motions or actions as they execute them. As they try to correct their technique they have to slow down and consciously think about the movements. This requires a lot of repetitions, 3,000-5,000.

This leads to the third stage called Unconsciously Competent.

This is where the motions or actions become ingrained. Players have been doing the action so many times that it becomes automatic. These are motions they don’t have to think about and do almost automatically.

We are in all three stages of learning all the time. There are parts of our game that we realize need improving (Stage 1).

There are things we are consciously working on (Stage 2), and there are parts of our game that are automatic and we perform without thought (Stage 3).

Even though we all want to be in Stage 3, the worst performing athletes, those who improve the least over time, are those who live or stay at Stage 3. They are happy with their tennis and do not try to consciously or continuously improve. They may not have the best technique but are satisfied with their game and are not interested in new information. They want to stick with what they know.

The highest performing, or those who show the most improvement, are those that stay in Stages 1 and 2. They love to find their weaknesses, find the solutions, practice to correct their weaknesses and move them to their strengths, and improve their game. That’s how to constantly get better and better every year.

The challenge is for everyone to stay in Stages 1 and 2, find weakness, find solutions, and practice to get better. It’s a lot more work but it makes tennis much more fun and rewarding.

We had 13 couples out to our fifth duplicate bridge (Monday evening) session of the season on July 27th. Congratulations to Barrie Heiman and Bob Lawler (first North / South) and Barb Roche and Ken Capelle (first East / West).

Last Chance Lake Huggers!!

Support VB’s Walk for Water on Sunday, August 9th Remember: this annual event is held in support of the Lake Winnipeg Foundation, an organization dedicated to finding ways of improving the health of our wonderful lake.

To you potential walkers: There’s still time to grab a pledge form. One was inserted into each copy of last week’s Herald (July 31rst). Take a look; it might still be there. Pledge forms are also available at VB’s key locations and at Saffies. You can also register online at lakewinnipegfoundation.org. You can walk alone or with others, and don’t fret about having to bring in a large amount of $. Every little bit counts!!

Things will get underway at the VB Clubhouse with registration beginning at 9:15, and the Walk starting at 10. In the hope of being child, dog, and energy friendly, there are 2 routes from which to choose: 2.5 km and 5 km -- and, as an added incentive, there will be a participants’ prize draw at the end. (NB: WALKERS ARE ASKED TO BRING ALONG THEIR OWN BOTTLE OF WATER.) Between 9:15 and 10, members of both the VB Walk organizing team and members of the LWF staff will be present to chat with folks, give information, etc. There will also be some neat, ecosupporting items for sale – such as “Hillary Druxman” LWF pendants (2 styles), bottles of Tiber River’s H2Whoa hand soap, and lovely, limited edition, black and white wood engraving prints by artist Henri Eric Bergman of flowers from the Brokenhead Wetlands Ecological Reserve.

To those who prefer not to walk: You can definitely still support this event by signing a walker’s pledge sheet or by simply making a donation to the LWF. Come down to the VB Clubhouse between 9:15 and 10 on Sunday, August 9th. We’d love to see you!

Fri. Aug. 7th is the 3rd and final Rogers Rookie Tournament of the summer. It’s an active Saturday and Sunday. There will be something for everyone! On Sat. Aug 8th Lisa Lucht and Sophie McGoey are running the Volleyball Tournament and the Johnson Family is convening the Cross Country Run for yet another summer. Then on Sunday Aug. 9th it’s the LWF Walk-For-Water run by Deanne McDonald and Sandy McCaig.

Also on Sunday it’s the Soccer Tournament with convenors Rex Neuendorff and Stino Siragusa. Thanks to all these amazing volunteers for keeping August so packed with fun events.

Our final weekend of programs starts off with the Volunteer Appreciation from 7-9 PM on Fri Aug. 14th. Come down to the Clubhouse to see what Wendy Derksen and Leslie Sarchuk have planned as a thank you to all our volunteers. The Dog Show is Sat. Aug. 15th at 11 AM. Thanks to new convenors Barb Hansford and Trish Nesbitt. Stino Siragusa continues to volunteer and is running the Novelty Tennis Tournament both Sat. and Sun. VB Club President Anil Kaul is chairing the AGM on Sun. Aug 16th at 4 PM at the Clubhouse. Thanks Anil!

There is more golf in September with the 55+ Golf Tournament and Dinner on Sept 14th. Once again we have new convenors – Dennis & Gina Roth, Ray & Lise Plouffe, and Claude & Gloria Fillion. Should be a great fall day!

V.B. Club Novelty Tennis Tournament August 15th and 16th

The V.B. Club Novelty Tennis Tournament is a fun-competition. It is a great way for our tennis community to mark the end of another spectacular summer season at Victoria Beach by doing what we love the most; playing tennis! Last year, the event was very well attended. The level of sportsmanship and competition on display was further evidence of what a wonderful little slice of heaven we have here at the V.B. courts (couldn’t resist it). This year promises to be equally entertaining.

Here are a few important notes for your information.

• Sign-up sheets will be posted at the tennis courts on Friday, August 7th at noon.

• Sheets will be taken down at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 13th (or when the first 48 players have signed-up). Please sign up early to avoid disappointment. Last year’s draw filled up very quickly!).

• Teams and draws will be posted no later than 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 14th.

• Entry fee is $5.00. Please pay before you play.

• All entrants must be members of the V.B, Club and have their own shoe tag.

• The Match Committee will make up teams of 4 players. (Groups are highly encouraged to come up with a team name). Prizes will be awarded for originality!

• Each entrant will play a total of 4 sets. (2 on Saturday and 2 on Sunday)

Golf Club Update

Hello everyone from the VB Golf Club. On Friday the 24th we held the Men’s open with 70 golfers, it turned out to be a beautiful day.

The winner of the tournament was Chris Papageorge with a score of 71. Congratulations to all the golfers who participated.

The junior tournament is Wednesday August 5th, we are now taking registrations at the golf club, and everyone is welcome.

The season is short, so come out and enjoy the golfing while you can. Looking forward to seeing you here!

Rain Rain Go Away!

Ladies Golf Tournament 2015 Come back another day! This is what many of the ladies were saying at the Ladies VB Golf tournament. I cannot remember having such terrible weather in all the years I’ve participated.

However, in spite of the rain and wind, it was awesome to observe all the wonderful and positive attitudes throughout the day. What a wonderful group of ladies!

My committee -- Sally Lawler and Laureen Johnstone -- added some new twists to the tournament so we were glad to receive positive feedback on the tee-gift-bag for everyone (look for those neon socks!), the fun contests and draws, and the food and festivities at the new VB Community Centre. The Merrymakers did a beautiful job catering our event in that comfortable setting with their tasty appetizers displayed so elegantly, and all the cute decorations. We continue to be very grateful to Kathy and Laith Gagnon for their wine donation each year so everyone can receive a complimentary glass of wine.

Thank you to all the clubhouse staff especially Karl, Ramona, and Lissa for all their help with the sign-up and organization.

Their patience and expertise was very much appreciated.

Accolades to the maintenance staff too, for keeping our course in such great shape.

Howdy VB kids I’m sad to say it’s already week 7 but what an amazing summer we had. We had great attendance this year. Here is the plan for the Final week – Monday, August 10.

Bike Hike this week will a surprise!! We had hoped to go to Elk Island but the lake level rose to an unsafe level. Please remember to bring a helmet- no helmet, no bike hike! Bring money for treats , nets , bug spray and a bathing suit.

We meet at the clubhouse just before 10 and are back usually just before noon. Parents and grandparents are always welcome and appreciated on the hike!

Claire Elizabeth and Charlotte Mae Oleszczuk, twin granddaughters of Barbara and Rob Riess experienced Victoria Beach for the first time this summer.

They enjoyed Happy Face Cookies, baby cones, the playground, the beach, and especially the chipmunk that lives on grandma’s front yard!

40 Years of Memories

Paddling Home

A story of some temporary, adopted Beach People On Canada Day, Victoria Beach became a rest stop for the Gendreau-Berthiaume Family. They left Edmonton on May 1st and are paddling home to Montreal in a 17-foot Prospector canoe.

Benoit Gendreau-Berthiaume, his wife Magali Moffatt and their 5-year-old son Mali spent the past several years living a very busy life in Edmonton where Dad Benoit was completing his Ph.D. in Forest Ecology. The family decided to relocate back to Montreal.

To slow their life down, meet new people and explore the paths and waterways once travelled by the Coureurs Des Bois, they decided to paddle and portage the 5,000kms home.

On the day of their stopover at VB, Mom Magali wasn’t feeling well and the family noticed, as they were paddling by, that the beach looked nice. They stopped for the afternoon at Clubhouse Beach so Magali could rest while Dad Benoit chatted with local cottagers. Young Mali spent time playing with 7-year-old Shane.

Before departing, Benoit picked up some fresh Einfeld’s bakery bread, and Mali was given a keepsake toy shark for the road by his new friend. Dad Benoit said at first moving on was difficult for Mali, but he had become accustomed to brief friendships and saying goodbye. The family is truly enjoying the bonding of traveling together and the experience has been wonderful for their son.

The Gendreau-Berthiaume family journey will take approximately 4 months. They expect to arrive in Montreal at the end of August. To learn more about their excursion or see updates, search “paddling home” online or visit them on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.

I could have filled a time capsule with happy great moments from way back in August of 1975 since moving from Toronto to Manitoba. Hans and I and John and Jennifer were lucky as our neighbours were the McDonald family. They invited us to VB and as a young family, we fell in love with the sun, sand, tennis, biking activities, jumping in the waves, spending fun fun time with the McDonalds and so many other families in the VB community. Thanks for the memories.

Thanks also to many VBers for dropping by and celebrating with us. Thank you also for your gifts of food for the Oak Table Community lunch program held in Augustine United Church Guild Hall and for supporting our special fundraiser with the cedar board clothes lines hanging with beach glass.

Eight at the Gate Our riding group celebrated another Gran Fondo - Gran Colazione (Big Ride – Big Breakfast) on Sunday August 2nd. The usual gang of great riders (35+/-) turned up as well as some new riders. A fast group of riders competed for the sprint honours with four sprints contested; the men’s winner Gord Mahwinney collected the coveted 6 pack of Leffe beer (Belgian for “Lion”; I know we don’t have cobblestones, but we do have Pitt Rd and strong winds).

The Ladies winner was Sharla Mahwinney collecting the bubbly Pinot Grigio, which I don’t think she plans on sharing. We split into three groups after the controlled roll-out to Saffies, with the speedy group adding a couple of extra kms past the Domo at Hillside, while the main group kept up a fast pace of 30 – 35 km/h and the “conversational” group enjoyed the scenery of Lakeshore Rd. all the way to Lester Beach (no, the Stanley Cup had already left). We reconvened at Marshall’s, where we all enjoyed pancakes, mimosas and conversation. The group will continue to ride thought the fall, meeting at 08:00,

weather permitting, switching to later start times as the weather cools. Some of our riders will be participating in major events later this season: Banff and Whistler Gran Fondos as well as the MS “Biking to the Viking.” Special thanks to Jim* from Beaches Bike Repair, pancake flipper extraordinaire. *Jim is also known as Amelia’s Dad. A History of St. Michael’s Church

The Early Years How many of us pass the corner of 8th and Pine Road and notice the Church placed back on the birch-treed lots on the corner? Do you wonder of its origins and how such a lovely building came to be? The Church has a long history within the beach community and has developed with the development of the Beach itself.

The early settlers of Victoria Beach came from many different countries representing many different religious denominations.

At that time with no meeting place, services for the various religions were conducted in local homes and later in the oneroom school house. Subsequently with the Legion Hall being built services of all faiths were held there.

The Anglican ministers began coming in the early 1940’s arriving Victoria Beach on the local train on the third Thursday of each month and would lodge at Mrs. Fall’s house on Pine Road from which she also operated her General Store. The minister would hold services that evening, at the Legion Hall returning to Winnipeg Friday morning.

Sophie David conducted weekly Sunday school for a total of 40 years, at the school and subsequent locations. Sophie, also President of the Ladies Auxiliary organized teas, baking and sewing sales for many years putting aside monies for the day when they could begin the construction of the Church. As donations added up the planning for construction began. The RM of Victoria Beach in 1949 donated the two lots at the corner of 8th Avenue and Pine Road. The Anglican Diocese donated the building plans to the community.

In fall of 1950, the elections of Church officers were held at the Legion Hall with John Ateah elected Treasurer and Walter Whyte Secretary. At the first meeting, Mrs. Falls gave a donation of $500 enabling a bank account to be opened. Lillie Lester suggested the name St. Michael’s Church for the new building and the name was enthusiastically adopted.

Construction materials for the new building were purchased from Brown and Rutherford in Winnipeg. Mr. Brown knew Alfred Ateah as he had doing “timber cruising” for Company on the east side of Lake for several years. Materials required were provided on very favorable terms.

In the spring of 1952, building got underway with Bert Martin and Stuart Linklater hired to oversee construction. The whole

community volunteered much time during this process until all was completed.

On August 16, 1952, the Church was dedicated. That first service drew a standing-room-only crowd as pews were yet to be installed. The Most Reverend L.R. Sherman, Archbishop of Rupert’s Land, assisted by Archdeacon N. Holms and The Reverend R. Dawson dedicated St. Michael’s Church. At this point, the National and Provincial flags and the “Roll of Honour” of those community members who served in the two World Wars were brought from the Legion Hall and placed in the Church.

Those early years, services were Anglican, with others holding marriages and funerals, In the early ‘70s the Roman Catholic services began using the Church and in 1983 the Summer Community Church began to worship at St Michael’s.

Plumbing was installed in 1980 with other improvements as well. The stained glass window above the altar was designed and created by John Nutter, in memory of his father Phillip.

Later, a 12’ x 20’ addition was built onto the back of the Church with two wheelchair accessible washrooms and a year round water system. In the ‘90’s the exterior was refurbished and a new roof added. It is this addition that now needs our attention.

East Beaches Animal Services Annual Fundraisers – A thank you.

It was a warm weekend and you warmed our hearts by coming out to our Raffle fundraiser (July 11 and 12th) and supporting us by buying tickets with the hopes of winning a prize all the while knowing that even though you did not win it was for a good cause. Congrats to the winners!

Our annual BBQ/Flea Market held on June 6th was well attended despite the constant downpour. You could say it had rained cats and dogs!!

36th Annual Victoria Beach 55+ Golf Tournament and Dinner WHEN: Monday, September 14th, 2015 WHERE: Victoria Beach Golf Course and the dinner is at the East Beaches Senior Scene, #3 Ateah Road.

There will be ample parking at the Senior Scene, on Ateah Road, and across the highway. The turkey dinner, catered by the Merry Makers will be at 6:15 pm, and the doors will open at 5:00 pm.

TIME: 2 shotgun starts at 9:30 am and 1:00 pm.

[Please arrive 30 minutes prior to the start time for registration] ELIGIBILITY: Please note, to play in the tournament, you MUST be a member of at least one of the following: the VB Golf Course; the VB Club, VB Sports Club/Community Centre or the Senior Scene. [Golfer’s spouses/partners may be under 55 and may golf, but cannot win a golf prize.]

Thank you to KickIt Dance Studio for donating Gatorades to all participants in the Junior tournament; to tennis court attendants Ben Charbonneau, Erik Kapilik, Luke Charbonneau, for helping to manage and maintain our wonderful tennis facility; Congratulations to Alex Kirbyson who will represent Manitoba at the Western Canada Summer Games this week in Fort McMurray, AB. He is playing boys doubles on the tennis team. Earlier this year he wore Manitoba’s colours as a member of the squash team at the Canada Winter Games in Prince George, BC.

Tennis Round Robin Results This week’s round robin winners were on July 27 Andrew and Karl Ruban with a total of 13 points! And on July 31 our winners were Marlene Boyda and her partner Karl Ruban with again a total of 13 points!
