It is Tax Time in Victoria Beach. Taxes are due July 31. This year there is a possible complication.

It looks like we will still have postal service until the end of July, but just in case – send that cheque a little earlier. Please include your water bill that was sent in May with the boiled water advisory.

Most people who bank in Canada also have the option to pay directly through their bank bill pay system. (RBC is the once exception that we know of). BUT if you choose this option, be careful.

Send it to the RM of Victoria Beach (Not the RM of Victoria which is in western Manitoba; and not to the city of Victoria in B.C.) Bears have been spotted in the beach again. One has been feeding on garbage left out in the King Edward area. This is a problem every summer.

Please do not leave garbage in a plastic bag at the front of your property. It is not safe. You are training the bears to become problem bears. If you leave on Sunday, take your garbage to the bins

by the parking lot. If you are staying out, do not put your garbage in your bin until the morning of your pick up.

Bike stickers – You can improve your chance of getting your bike back if it is registered. Why not visit the police and buy a $2.00 bike sticker?

Please consider getting a green civic sign for your cottage. We live in dense foliage. Many people have lovely signs painted on stone, wooden signs hung in trees or brass numbers attached to the building. The EMO officials cannot easily identify your building in the dark. For your safety and the safety of your neighbours please get a civic sign that glows in the dark. The applications are available at the village grocery, the Seniors’ Scene on Ateah Road, and at Saffie’s store in Albert Beach. Fill it in and take it to the Seniors’ Scene along with a cheque for $50.00 any Monday, Wednesday or Friday.

Welcome to Doctor Garth Campbell Garth Campbell July 25 - Aug. 7 The medical committee and council would like to welcome Dr. Garth Campbell back to Victoria Beach once again. We are so happy to have doctors come back summer after summer. He will be with us until August 7. It is good to have doctors who are familiar with the clients and the way the community functions.

Also, thanks you to Dr. Carry Martens-Barnes for coming out once again and spending time in our clinic. We really appreciate all the work you do before the summer begins and then the time you give while you are here.

For anyone new to the area, the doctor’s cottage is at 124 Birch Avenue. The phone number there

is 204-756-6305. This year, the Clinic hours are 9:30 to 11:30 and 5:30 to 7:30 Tuesday through to Sunday. On Monday there is one clinic only from 5:30 through to 7:30.

This service is available to everyone. If you live outside the vehicle restricted area, stop at the white information building and ask. The attendant will help you get to the doctor safely.

The Herald prints nine issues each summer on Fridays from late June to mid-August. The Herald welcomes submissions from readers focused on family events, beach happenings, community issues, etc. Letters to the Editor are always welcome: they must be signed with the author’s name and be written with the understanding that many people read the Herald, including youngsters.

Submissions should be sent via email to vbherald@shaw.ca. Those without access to email can place written submissions in the VB Herald mailbox behind the cash counter at the Victoria Beach General Store.

Submission deadline is 4PM Fridays with the exception of VB Club event convenor submissions for events occurring on weekend days.

A Smashing Good Time!

Hi everyone! What better way to enjoy the summer than playing GVS! As previous years show, GVS is one of the most popular tennis activities of the summer. It is an hour filled with laughter, music, smiles and of course tennis! If you follow us on twitter you would see that even in the rain everyone still wants to play! So come on down to the courts from 11-12 on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday for Adult GVS! If anybody is unsure of the rules, or is brand new to the game, here’s how you play.

To begin the game, 2 people (the challengers) will line up on the baseline to receive a groundstroke from the court attendant or feeder. The point is rallied out and, if the challenger wins against their opponents (Kings/Queens) they get to move up to the service line. If the challengers lose and have touched the ball they are out and have to wait for another turn. But, if one of the challengers hasn’t touched the ball they stay where they are and will be fed the next groundstroke. When you have won your first point and moved up to the service line, you will receive another feed, but this time you will have to volley the ball over the net. The challenger’s partner will then be fed the volley. If the challengers win the point again, the person who hit the groundstroke will then be fed an overhead ball to smash. If you win all 3 points, you have 3 seconds to run to the other side of the court to become the new kings/queens. If you ever hit a ball over the net and the kings/queens don’t touch it, you automatically become the new

Door-to-door pickup is as follows: MONDAY - Albert Beach, all areas south of Arthur Road and west of Ateah Road, including Ateah Road TUESDAY - All avenues in Restricted Area north of Arthur Road including Sunset Boulevard WEDNESDAY - Municipal garbage enclosures in all areas.

Garbage is to be placed in garbage bags and left in containers (preferably bear-resistant ones). Containers are to be placed in the front yard - not on the road allowance - by no later than 8:30 am.

Ladies VB Golf Tournament – July 27th

Have you signed up yet? Please remember that the tournament is for beginner and experienced golfers so don’t worry about shooting 90...or more! (Actually, the highest 9-hole score you can shoot is 71 since there is a maximum score for each hole!)

Everyone gets a tee gift and is eligible to win other draws and prizes for things like landing on the third green or in a sand trap!

Here are the details: Time: 2 shotgun starts at 8:30 AM and 11:30 AM with a postround wind-up at 2:30 PM. Registration: Sign-up at the VB Golf Course; first come, first served. Tournament-day registration will be at 8:00 am and 11:00 am for the two starts.

Cost: $15.00 per person (plus $14 green fees if you’re not a member of the VB Golf Course).

Wind-up: 2:30-4:30 PM at the new Victoria Beach Community Centre on Hwy 59. Includes visiting, prizes, and draws while enjoying a complimentary glass of wine and appetizers prepared by the Merrymakers.

Silent Auction: We would appreciate any donations monetary or otherwise. Please drop off at the golf course by July 23. Silent auction tickets will be on sale at the wind-up so don’t forget your $$! We are supporting the new VB Community Centre so we are keen to surpass last year’s total of $1100.

Kids Fishing Derby – Sunday, July 24

The annual V.B. Children’s Fishing Derby is this Sunday, July 24.

The horn will blow at 9am to kick off the derby at the VB Pier.

The total fishing time will be two hours. The derby is for all kids 12 and under. Prizes will be awarded for the biggest, smallest and most amount of fish caught. For all those parents attending the dance the night before Toga’s are always welcome on the Pier and in some cases can substitute as an excellent net to help land those master anglers. Kids, please wear your VB membership bands and make sure to register at the kiosk before you cast your lines.

VB Paint Nite

We would like to have a Paint Nite at the Victoria Beach Clubhouse on Wednesday, August 17th. We need 30 people in order to book our artist. It’s $40/person. There will be wine and refreshments available for sale.

Don’t know what “Paint Nite” is? It’s a night with painting and beverages. The painting is decided on beforehand and there is an instructor/artist to help you create your versions of that painting. It’s a fun social evening with an artistic twist.

VB Swim wants a record number to come out for the 800 Meter Open Swim on Saturday, July 23 at 2 PM at the Pier (come early to register). Relay Teams – put together a relay team of 4 swimmers and swim the course as a team. Individual swimmers will swim the race first and then we’ll do the relay.

In honor of the Olympic Games we are giving away a prize at the 800 meter Open to the Individual and Team that displays the most Olympic Spirit with “team colours”, flags, face paint and cheering squads, etc.!

VB Swim wants you to still sign up for Swimming Lessons any weekday morning from 9:00 - 10:30 at the Swim Dock. At $25 per session lessons are such a steal-of-a-deal that even if your child can only attend for part of a session they still get experience swimming in a lake (murky, sometimes choppy, etc.) and it is a great way for them to meet other kids their age and for parents to meet other families as they sit together at the beach/swim dock.

Last Saturday’s 200 Meter Swim Race was a grand success! 47 swimmers came out to the pier to join in the event. They ranged in age from 5 to “a lot older”. First Overall Winner in the Men’s was Cameron Russell with a time of 2 minutes 31 seconds. First Overall Winner in the Women’s was Ella Russell with a time of 2:49. Congratulations to the brother/sister team! See full results below.

Are you and your bikes ready for the annual Bike Race? This year’s race will be held Sunday July 31st at the sports field.

Registration will start promptly at 9:30am, all kids aged 4-18 are welcome. Awards will be presented to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners for boys and girls in the following age categories:

WHEN: Monday, September 12th, 2016 WHERE: Victoria Beach Golf Course and the dinner is at the Victoria Beach Community Centre/Sports Centre at 5 Ash Avenue The turkey dinner, catered by the Merry Makers, will be at 6:15 pm, and the doors will open at 5:00 pm.

GOLF TIME: 2 shotgun starts at 9:30 am and 1:00 pm.

[Please arrive 30 minutes prior to the start time for registration] ELIGIBILITY: Please note, to play in the tournament, you MUST be a member of at least one of the following: the VB Golf Course; the VB Club, VB Community Centre/Sports Centre or the East Beaches Senior Scene. All riders must wear a safety helmet and we strongly suggest wearing proper clothing and footwear - loose gravel and pot holes can make the courses challenging and dangerous at times.

Meet some home-grown LWF Water Walkers As the fourth generation of kids growing up in Victoria Beach, the children of Kristie and Doug Pollard love their lake.

The kids, ages 10, 8 and 6 have spent all their summers here. They swim a lot, take swimming lessons at the dock, skip rocks on the beach, jump waves, get gooey in the shoreline clay and search for frogs in Lost Lagoon. The water and the beach, and the joys that these offer, are indelibly part of their family life.

Mom Kristie’s family cottage is across the lake where she grew up; Doug experienced the lake as a sailor and a wind-surfer as well as in his present role as a devoted dad. Both adults are heavily involved in local programming and value the long-term health of the VB community.

Understanding how critical the health of Lake Winnipeg is to sustaining their summer community, Doug and Kristie (including their wonderful extended family) have been strong supporters of the Lake Winnipeg Foundation’s Walk For Water over the years.

Bringing their children on the Walk has always been important to them. Kristie says “We have done the both the short course (2.5kms) and the long course (5kms). We began doing it with a stroller, with the kids getting out to walk portions.

Now they are walking with their friends, having fun while supporting a great cause”.

Last summer they raced laughing into the Village Green to finish their Walk and claim their freezies, beating their parents in the process!

Kristie adds “Cottage life is where you develop special memories as a family. Lake Winnipeg is OUR lake and we want it to be here for future memories to be made”. We look forward to seeing the Pollard family race back in on the Walk For Water again this year, on Sunday August 7th.

Brass Band

The German Society of Winnipeg Brass Band serenaded all who were around the village green on July 16th, including the players in the Master’s tennis tournament.

Some of our Founding Riders 2009, still riding, still smiling!

Our group now includes riders from Calgary, Canmore, California and Collingwood. We also have riders from Saskatchewan and Switzerland and even some from Vancouver! Children’s Masquerade rocks the Village Green July 16, 2016 115 kids came from near and far for the Children’s Masquerade last weekend. The far group was led by Nicole Ballon Carrillo, all the way from Mexico. In fact, she was dressed as El Sol de Mexico and she delivered – it felt as sunny and hot as she’s used to in Zihuatanejo!

Between other tasks, our costume judges watched the crowd carefully. And after much debate, they settled on: Chayse, Grayce, Aislynn and Dylan as the Best VB Theme (the Moonlight Inn); Piper as the Most Original (VB Puppet Master); Maggie, Emma, Ella, Abby, Rachel and Alicia as the Best Group Costume (VB Rec Assistants); and the parents of Georgia Lodewyks for the Best Adult Costumes (Party Animals). Honourable Mention went to the extended Peacock Family as Snow White, the Seven Dwarfs and the Poison Apple.

It’s always fun to salute our youngest participant. A warm welcome to Victoria Beach to Alice Wheatley (8 months) who was dressed as Judith the Cabbage Patch Kid. Thanks to our favourite musical couple – Kim and Aaron Burnett – for entertaining us one more time. We tried something new this year with Aaron playing music for the kids waiting patiently in line. Let me know your feedback if you thought that was better than recorded music.

Despite natures attempts to thwart the event from completion, our intrepid participants braved the elements to make some incredible sandcastle creations. Imaginations ran wild Sunday morning producing some memorable sandcastles. The poor weather and close competition made judging particularly difficult, but regardless, there were plenty of chattering smiles all around. Especially when the freezies were brought out!!

Tropical Storm Fraser Frasier is on a northerly track from its current location at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine Rivers and, if models prove accurate, the remnants of the storm could reach the Lake Winnipeg area in the next few weeks. Berks ‘Bilgewater’ Trembles, Head of Marine and Social Forecasting, also expressed concern about a low pressure system that’s been languishing near the shores of Lake Ontario in the past few weeks. Hurricane Quinny is lazily moving around with no particular cause or direction, but models indicate the possibility of it moving west and strengthening. Trembles said the models are not powerful enough to predict what might happen if Frasier and Quinny converge at Victoria Beach simultaneously. Scientists were overheard whispering about ‘The Sunset Soundsystem’.

A team of experts has been dispatched – The Brock Street Bandits have assured local authorities that rock music and dancing will be enough to confine the event to a designated area. Jonathan Tall Tide, VBYC’s Head of Lubrication and Fuel Services, has ensured that copious amounts of adult refreshments will be available for purchase. The Oliver Pollard design team will have limited edition Victoria Beach Yacht Club shirts and koozies on hand to keep you warm and your beverage cold.

Batten down the hatches and join the party at the VB Community Centre at the sports field off Hwy 59 on Sunday, July 31 after 8pm. This was a hot ticket last year, so sheet in and set your course for the Parking Lot or VB Store to pick up a ticket for $20. All proceeds benefit the Victoria Beach Yacht Club, junior sailing development, and the VB Community Centre.

Start practising your sprints, your hopping skills and your slowest bike rides as this year’s Sports Day will be on Saturday, July 23rd at the Sports Field.

We will be starting promptly at 10:00 a.m. with our youngest sprinters.

This year, we have split the Family Relay into two separate relay events. First, we will have the Family Relay which will be in the traditional format, but it is reserved for family members.

Secondly, we will have an Open Relay event where you can put together a team of any four individuals. However, due to the huge popularity of the relay events, individuals will be permitted to run on only one relay team.

LESSONS IN WALLEYE FISHING...

I am 13 years old, and, like many of you, have been coming to Victoria Beach since I was a baby (3 weeks old). I have also been lucky enough to grow up fishing in Ontario as well (mostly on Long Lake near Vermillion Bay) FISH STORY...

I was on the pier last Saturday (July 2nd) and was watching as a family caught a 25-30” walleye (pickeral). This thing was huge!!

I have adult witnesses that also estimated the size to be more than 25” -- closer to 30”) This family that caught the fish were taking pictures and discussing whether to keep the fish to eat.

Unfortunately, the fish was dropped a few times while they held it awkardly while making decison.

My dad always taught me that, although you are legally allowed to keep one large fish, it is best to throw back the big big fish as they are “breeding fish”. I guess it is a matter of opinion, but I’ve always thought the best “eaters” are about 16-18”. I decided to tell this family what I knew about breeding fish.

I thought this may have been a female as it had a big fat tummy.

Because she was over 25”inches long, I guessed she’d be over 20 years old. These bigger fish are the ones that populate a lake. I told them it would be harder to fillet and not as tasty & big fish are a bit harder to cook evenly.

They decided to keep the fish.

By then the fish had stopped breathing so I walked back, with my cousin and friend, to my aunt who was farther back on the pier (my aunt stayed away as she said she was ‘traumatized’ by watching a fish die because she is NOT a fisher-woman!). Then we noticed that this family had suddenly decided NOT to keep the fish --- as they had just put the fish BACK in the water!! So we went back to see if the fish would live. They had dropped it over the edge near the stairs and it was floating on it’s side - Dead?!!

As they had decided NOT to keep the fish..

I thought I’d see if I could help it revive.

I climbed down the stairs and I was able to hang on to the ladder and still reach the walleye with my other hand. I turned the fish over (up-side right - so tummy was down) and I did what I’ve done many times before when a fish was out of water for a bit too long: I swished it back n’ forth in the water forward and

backward.... forward and backward... This allows the gills to fill with water again (kind of like getting air/oxygen into a drowning victim’s lungs).

I continued to swish... forward and backward.... over and over...

I could feel the fish twitch a bit in my hand (part of me thought this was just the fish continuing to die as it had been out of the water for a good 15+ minutes! I was not sure this would work).

I hung from one arm on the ladder and continued this swishing action for at least 3 minutes (which is a long time!!)... FINALLY: WHOOSH!!! ZIP! SPLASH!! THE GIANT FISH SWOOPED OUT OF MY HAND AND ZOOMED STRAIGHT DOWN TO THE BOTTOM OF THE LAKE!!

Everyone that was watching from the pier above CHEERED!!!

Needless to say, I was very glad that the fish was not “wasted” in death and left floating on the water. I was really glad I knew how to revive a fish. My cousin, Branson, and my friend, Sierra, were both very excited and happy. They called me a hero. That made me feel very good (and my aunt was less traumatized with a “happy ending”!)

My mom and dad walked up shortly and my dad said that the fish will probably sit on the bottom of the lake for a bit to recover.

He compared it to the “Concusion Quiet Room” where athletes go to recover from their injuries. We like to believe “she” had a good chance of recovering and continuing to proprogate our lake with more walleye that can grow to be caught in our fishing tournaments in years to come!! Maybe she can live a few more years yet!!

P.S. If your’re going to keep a fish, try to decide quickly... and don’t let the fish stay out of water too long before you decide you’re NOT going to keep it! remember.. fish out of water is like you being UNDER water! and dont thow it back -- but place it gently and swish it back n forth until it’s ready to go on it’s own.

P.P.S. I am not 100% sure on the details in our Manitoba Angler laws regarding length of fish you are allowed to keep and the other regulations around fishing but believe a licenced fisher(wo)man can keep only 1 larger fish. The details on this regulation can be another article in the next VB Herald!

Sign-up sheets for volunteers and players will be posted with player’s code of conduct on Friday July 22nd and will be taken down on Thursday July 28th at 5:00pm. No late entries will be accepted after the sign-up sheets have been taken down. Pictures of the Draws will be tweeted out from @vbtennisclub early on Friday July 29th and the draw sheets will be posted at 3pm that same day. Maximum 3 events per person ($5 per event). My First Year in Tennis

The Start I was 73 years old when I started to play tennis. In February, 2015, Ken Capelle invited me to attend one of the weekly sessions of the Tennis Academy offered by the Leisure World Tennis Club (LWTC) in Mesa, Arizona. I accepted and had a wonderful time as the volunteer coaches of the Academy introduced we novices to the basic strokes of the game. They also encouraged us to attend the Potluck Games held each morning from 7:30 to 9:00. I participated in these during the last six weeks that my wife Mary and I were in Arizona, and unsurprisingly perhaps, by the time of our departure, I was hooked on the game.

My Activities in 2015-16 I became a member of the VBTC in the summer of 2016, and the extensive program established by Bryan Yagi and his team was exactly what I needed at that stage of my development. I was a keen participant in the skill building clinics including the lessons with the professionals, in the Ground - Volley - Smash games, and in the round robins. I did not play in any of the tournaments though as I did not feel sufficiently prepared.

In September, I joined the Taylor Tennis Club (TTC) in Winnipeg and played about four times a week, mostly in men’s doubles but occasionally in mixed doubles and singles. I have particularly appreciated the efforts of the staff there to place me with three different groups of players, and of course I am very pleased by the warm welcome I have received from the players.

Mary and I returned to Leisure World in January, 2016 for a three month stay, and upon arrival, I immediately took out membership in LWTC. Now however, buoyed by my play at VB and Taylor, I was eager to play in the league and tournaments in which LWTC participates. Before being able to do so, I had to be rated.

There are 16 seniors’ tennis clubs in the East Valley of Phoenix with a membership of approximately 4,000. So it is not surprising that the levels of the league and tournaments correspond to the seven point scale of the National Tennis Rating Program where 1.5 means that you are a beginner and 7.0 makes you Novak Djokovic.

I applied to be rated, and the Chair of the appropriate committee organized the event for me, I was assigned to play 12 games with three other players (four with each) in a doubles format before a panel of three raters. I was quite nervous about this as the games began, but the other players certainly tried to put me at ease. As a result, I was given a 2.5 rating and assigned to one of the two 2.5 level teams of LWTC. My team had three activities each week - a practice, a round robin, and a league game each Friday morning. My rating also entitled me to play in the 3.0 round robins, and I regularly did so.

March was tournament month. I played in the men’s doubles, the mixed doubles, and the team (4 men, 4 women) competition.

Our teams won about half our sets and games which was moderately disappointing but this didn’t detract at all from the fun of the competition.

LWTC benefited very much this past year by the presence of Helle Sparre, a former U.S. Doubles Champion and the author of the book Dynamite Doubles, now in its third edition. Helle coached our team, and we certainly were helped by her.

In addition to playing, I began to become interested in the ATP tour. I do read a lot, and the best tennis book I read while in Arizona was Break Point: The Inside Story of Modern Tennis by Kevin Mitchell which was published by John Murray Publishers in 2014. The book tells the story of the 2013 season and makes the case that the modern professional game is essentially a ground stroke game played by athletes in superb physical condition.

Kids Fishing Derby Sunday July 24

First year continued...

Some Things I Have Learned During my first year in tennis, I have been a member of three clubs.

A check of my calendar indicates that I played about 225 times and about 300 hours. I certainly will not make the 10,000 hours commonly thought to be necessary to achieve expertise.

Fortunately, expertise has not been one of my goals, though clearly, I would like to become more proficient than I am now.

I have learned a lot.

1. Tennis can be enjoyed for many years. One of the joys of the past year has been playing with people who are in their 70s, their 80s, and in at least two cases, their 90s. I tell them that they are my new heroes. Of course, I have witnessed lots of elbow wraps, wrist bands, knee braces, and ankle supports which testify to the demands of the support.

2. The camaraderie of the tennis world has been very enjoyable. I have found that virtually all the players I have met are welcoming, gracious, and friendly.

3. I have come to appreciate highly the skills that people have to make all eight strokes associated with the game - the serve, forehand, backhand, volley, half-volley, drop shot, smash, and lob. When I apply my current rating to that range of strokes, I can see how far I have to go.

4. I love the strategies associated with the doubles game, and I am trying to develop my skill to be a good partner, 5. Most of all, I have learned that tennis is great fun! I very much am looking forward to another summer in the VBTC. John Stapleton

The annual V.B. Children’s Fishing Derby is this Sunday, July 24. The horn will blow at 9am to kick off the derby at the VB Pier.

The total fishing time will be two hours. The derby is for all kids 12 and under. Prizes will be awarded for the biggest, smallest and most amount of fish caught. For all those parents attending the dance the night before Toga’s are always welcome on the Pier and in some cases can substitute as an excellent

net to help land those master anglers. Kids, please wear your vb membership bands and make sure to register at the kiosk before you cast your lines. Looking forward to a fun morning of fishing.

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden death of Gordon Ross on Sunday July 10 2016. Gordon was a valued member of the Council of the Rural Municipality of Victoria Beach serving our community since he was elected in 2014.

Gordon came to the RM as a cottager at Albert Beach where he was involved in many undertakings. In 2001Gordon and his wife Cec built their dream home and in 2006 moved to the beach as permanent residents. He was involved, serving on the Albert Beach Cottage owners association executive and on the Shoreline Advisory committee.

Gordon was hard working. He served on the Public Works committee, the Municipal Buildings committee, the Finance committee and the district Health committee. He took pride of the fact that he did not miss meetings. He listened to the concerns of the electorate. His efforts will be missed by council, public employees and members of the community.

A celebration of Gordon’s life will be held on July 23, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. at the Victoria a Beach Community Centre (the Sports Club)
