V.B. Summer Reads A Hundred Summers by Beatriz Williams Last summer I was scolded for not reviewing Fifty Shades of Grey. It was not for lack of trying but I could not pry the book from my wife’s hands. She has since lent it to Dan Sudermann (no joke). So this summer I plan to lighten the subject matter and stick to a theme. All books reviewed will involve lakes, cottages, beaches, and some randiness. Starting us off is author Williams’ fine novel and entertaining beach read. This story of deception and unrequited love toggles back and forth between 1931 and 1938. The primary locale is a very tony summer community in Rhode Island. There are just forty- three cottages in Seaview though parallels with Victoria Beach abound. Given the period husbands only appear on weekends commuting from their jobs, cottages have been in the family for generations, and a clubhouse anchors the community offering bridge, dances, dinners, and boatloads of gin. The main character of Lily is attracted to Seaview for “its old-fashionedness, its never-changingness” but she recognizes “the same conversation, the same patterns, evening after evening, summer after summer.” This provides comfort in 1938 but soon some shocking unresolved issues from seven years earlier come up. The catalyst is the arrival of Lily’s former friend Budgie now married to Nick who was Lily’s ‘one that got away’. While this plot is hardly unique the author provides surprising twists and all is definitely not what it seems. The dialogue is believable and the book well-paced. The characters are at once familiar and original. Lily is the stalwart while Budgie is the wild card - “she never runs to form”. Lily’s relatively young Aunt Julia is quick of wit. At one point Julia is basking on the beach and professes she needs only sun and sand to be happy then promptly asks if anyone has any whiskey. There are salacious scenes and occasionally humorous descriptions like “All the men were in

their bathing trunks, without shirts, and Graham shone among them like a golden Adonis, tanned from the sun, muscles etched in picture-book perfect symmetry, jaw squared and blue eyes flashing. His cheekbones rose elegantly above the rest of humanity.” That one set of cheekbones can rise above humanity is amazing (I am still getting used to this chick/beach-lit genre). The book concludes by blending fact and fiction. It culminates in the great New England hurricane of 1938. That actual Category 3 storm was so ferocious that seven hundred people died and two billion trees were felled. In her biography, Katharine Hepburn wrote that she played nine holes of golf that morning and “had lost her home, her possessions, and nearly her life by dinnertime”. A Hundred Summers was a surprising pleasure like an MLCC sale on Tanqueray. Jeff Swystun is the author of The Brand Glossary & #24 top reviewer on Amazon Canada. His short story, Start-Upped, spent six weeks on Amazon’s Hot New Releases for Satire.

Once again it is time to kick-off our summer season. What better way than with fireworks! Don’t miss this wonderful display on Sunday night. Thanks to Rob Hester for once again organizing what has become a favorite annual event. Wonderful events like the fireworks are only made possible with the revenue that comes from membership dues. Please consider supporting the VBC club by buying a membership this weekend. The cost is only $40! Seriously – only $40 – for the entire family! It seems like a no-brainer really. However for those who may be thinking – hmmmm – I’m not sure that we really need a membership this year, I thought I would try to provide some gentle persuasion. So the following is my stab at a Top 10 list. In the interest of not being directly compared to David Lettermen I have actually crafted a Top 11 list instead. Top 11 reasons why all adults need a VBC membership: 11. Sitting out on your deck with your morning coffee, listening to the birds and reading the VBC Herald. 10. Witnessing the sense of accomplishment that your child or grandchild feels when he/she passes their next swimming level. 9. Feeling a sense of accomplishment that YOU feel after winning the slow bike race on sports day!
Letters to the Editor After having read the letters to the editor from the June 21st Herald, I am surprised to read that that our council told Dr. Martens-Barnes and 3 others that they decided not to service the doctor’s office. I am surprised because one of the main reasons for not staffing the doctor’s office that I received in a letter from the RM on March 20th (and again at the RM meeting on March 27th) is that they “have continued difficulty each summer staffing the Doctor’s Clinic for the entire period of the restricted season.” This led me to believe they had not been able to find doctors for this summer. From what Dr. Martens-Barnes says in her letter, I now no longer understand why the doctor’s office is closed this particular season because it seems we did have doctors lined up for this summer. I am disappointed and concerned about its closure because our community, which can swell to 10,000 in the summer months will now be a burden upon the already over-burdened local health services such as Pine Falls, which services 13 communities (according to their website), and there has been some indication that they are having difficulties staffing their facility. Not only would it be difficult for our community
8. Sitting out in the warm sunshine enjoying a beautiful VB day while watching your child or grandchild laugh and play games each week with VBC recreations staff. 7. The compliments you receive from your latest home décor flea market find. 6. Reading a great summer book that you borrowed from the VBC library. 5. Feeling completely relaxed and restored after Yoga in the VBC clubhouse. 4. Feeling rejuvenated and energized after an aerobics class in the VBC clubhouse. 3. Knowing you have challenged your brain cells each week at duplicate bridge - also in the VBC clubhouse. 2. Learning a few great tips at a tennis lesson with Robert Kennedy and then using them to beat your spouse at tennis on the VBC courts. 1. Being able to reflect on so many wonderful memories that were made over the years while you, your children or your grandchildren participated in VBC activities! Now, I may be no David Lettermen, but have I at least convinced you to buy a membership? See you on the avenues, Maureen Neuendorff.
Responses to the letter to the editor from June 21st, 2013 continued on Page 5 to see a local doctor, but we will now be making it difficult for all of these other local communities to receive health care as well. Perhaps we could form a committee of residents to help find doctors and manage the doctor’s office in the future. I would be happy to volunteer for this. According to the Municipal Act, “the purposes of a municipality are…to provide services, facilities or other things that, in the opinion of the council of the municipality, are necessary or desirable for all or a part of the municipality.” I would state with confidence that seeing as over 100 people are listed as having sent letters regarding the closing of the doctor’s office in the April 16th RM meeting minutes that this service is certainly desired. Because of the current indication of concern for local health services I would say it is also a necessary service in that we need to consider not over-burdening the local health care facilities that service the surrounding 13 communities. I would like to thank Dr. Carry Martens-Barnes for her services and the services of all the doctors over the years who have helped my family and the community. Jennifer Engbrecht
Victoria Beach HERALD
Looking out at the lake in the spring affirms that, although we know only too well that there are challenges, the clear, cold water reminds us that a return to a healthy lake is possible. The 2013 designation of Lake Winnipeg as the global Threatened Lake of the Year underscores the need for immediate action to reduce the phosphorous loading that feeds excess algae and chokes the lake. Our Manitoba government has committed to reduce the phosphorous levels by 50%, which will take co-ordination and leadership among stakeholders to share strategies, information and resources. In seeking this common goal, Lake Winnipeg Foundation (LWF) is partnering with respected conservation organizations across the province who are stepping forward as Champions to lead in eight key actions identified in the Lake Winnipeg Health Plan: 1. Improved monitoring of nutrient sources 2. Keeping water on the land 3. Municipal sewage treatment

4. Conservation and wise use of boreal wetlands (including our own Traverse Bay Marsh) 5. Individual actions, individual responsibilities (see the orange Do What Matters booklet, delivered to your cottage this May) 6. Economic instruments for water quality 7. Agricultural best management practices, and 8. Coordinated shoreline management We will explore some of these actions in later articles. Building this capacity as a key player has been accomplished in part through the support and interest of people like you, and we are very grateful. The east side community has stepped forward to play a strong support role as stewards and contributors of lake health, and we hope we can count on you going forward. As a grassroots organization, LWF continues to need ‘boots on the ground’ and personal and corporate support. There was a vivid example of what citizen momentum can do this winter as the decision to eliminate the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) was reversed by the combined impact of thousands of Canadians who took the time to inform themselves of the value of this exceptional facility in fresh water research, and make the change happen. A great way to support LWF is to join in this year’s Golf-Fore-Water golf tournament on Tuesday afternoon July 16th at Larters at St. Andrews. Led by VBer John Heppenstall, this is a fun event with a BBQ lunch, 18 holes of golf, a dinner following and awards with great prizes. Information and a registration form are located at www.walkforwater.ca The Walk for Water Walk-a-thon, to be held in VB and elsewhere on Sunday August 11th is just part of our summer Lake-a-thon program where we invite you to dream up your own fund-raiser to benefit Lake Winnipeg Foundation. Brodie Quinton, an energetic and concerned young environmentalist in VB, is offering his terrific Victoria Beach Recycling Pick-up again this year as his contribution to the Lake-a-thon fundraiser. Last summer VB resident and chef extraordinaire Sophie McGoey raffled and prepared a ‘fantastique’ French dinner for six lucky cottagers. We’ve seen swimathons, Justin Bieber screamathons and cycleathons to raise funds for LWF. All very much appreciated! We can’t wait to see what develops this year as the creative juices flow. Information and support for developing your own Lake-a-thon activity can be found at www. lakewinnipegfoundation.org/get-invovlved/lake-a-thon Save the date for the VB LWF Information Night at the Clubhouse on Wednesday 24 July. We can’t reveal the program so early but it will be interesting. There will be an update on lake matters and a cool quiz on your lake knowledge as well. This is a family-friendly event. LWF was honoured to be Manitoba’s first recipient of the 2013 Council of the Federation Excellence in Water Stewardship award for outstanding achievement, innovative practice and excellence in water stewardship. As well, we garnered Honourable Mention in 2013 Manitoba Sustainability in Water and Natural Area Stewardship Award. This recognition, your ongoing support and the granting approval of agencies such as the Winnipeg Foundation and the Walter and Duncan Gordon Foundation will keep the movement going forward with the vision of a healthy Lake Winnipeg in a healthy watershed.

Letters to the Editor Is there a Doctor in the house? For the first time in many years, the answer in Victoria Beach is no. Council’s decision to close the medical office in the middle of winter was made with inadequate notice, no consultation, and for unjustified reasons. Council’s only attempt to inform the public of their intention to close the clinic was posted on their website in early February, stating that it would be tabled for a March council meeting - the motion was then passed in late February. It appears no attempt was made to spread the word through the VBCOA, social media, or even neighbourly phone calls. Part of the reason council gave for this mid-winter motion was that this was the time of year they needed to contact doctors for summer scheduling and therefore a quick decision was needed. They also stated that this issue had been discussed over the years by current and previous councils. If so, why was this not announced last summer in the Herald when input could have been provided? I can recall several years ago when council contemplated discontinuing brush pickup. Notice was given in the Herald and the community was able to provide feedback. I would have expected council to pay the same heed to our health as they do to broken branches. Attending the late March council meeting, I learned that council felt justified closing the clinic because they had not received any community comments between February 6 and 26. Despite the fact that 6 delegations spoke against the decision and over 100 letters were received, a motion by Councillor McKibbin to reopen the issue went unseconded . We were also told that it simply took too much time to find and convince doctors to come to VB for the summer. While this might be true, it appears from Dr. Martens-Barnes’ letter in last week’s

Herald that four doctors could have been easily arranged for 2013, allowing council time to hear the beach’s feelings on the issue this summer. The Minister of Health’s office estimates that the clinic was used 362 times last year, or an average of 8 visits per day. The VB financial statements list the 2012 budgeted cost of the medical clinic at only $3,000 as the doctors bill Manitoba Health directly for their time. I find it hard to understand why something that was valued by the community, used frequently, and cost so little would be closed in such haste. Our CAO commented to me that council decided to close the clinic for 2013 and use the summer to gauge our reaction. Perhaps we can see our clinic open again. Council meets at 7 pm on July 23 at the Seniors Scene. . Garett Surcon The council’s decision to “no longer provide summer doctor services” as written by Councillor McMorris in the June 21 Herald does not give taxpayers a reason for this decision. Does this mean that the taxpayer will be reimbursed for this service that is no longer provided? On a recent visit to the emergency department at the Pine Falls Health Complex there was no doctor available. I was told that I should call ahead since doctors are not always on duty 24 hours, 7 days a week. This is an important omission on the Information for Residents Card for medical care alternatives. This decision by council is not acceptable and as a long time cottage owner I am both disappointed and angry. Bonnie Pike On behalf of the Seniors Scene, I would like to express our appreciation to Joyce and her staff from the catering company Sis & Me for the terrific job they did for our dinner dance last Saturday. Without a doubt, they served up an excellent meal, on time, with ample food, offered extra serving duties and went beyond our expectations with their care and concern that we have a great dinner. We can only expect that their food and service at the Moonlight Inn this summer will be equally enjoyable and worth sampling. Good job ladies! Margaret Haddad, Social Committee Chair

Every July Long weekend, volunteer canvassers fan out across VB helping us all get our club memberships, our wristbands, and our tennis memberships. With this time upon us this weekend, this is a primer on the ins and outs of getting just the right membership for
your circumstances! Funds raised from VB Club Memberships supports all of your Club programs all summer long! Donations made through the membership campaign help the club maintain the facilities and equipment that make these programs possible.
1. No participation, but Donation. Some empty nesters elect not to purchase a membership but make a direct donation to the VB Club and receive a tax receipt for all gifts over $20.
2. One family cabin, many families or friends. Many cottages are shared by two or more families. Memberships are nontransferrable and are for use by a single family. So, in this example, these families signed up with a canvasser on one form, but purchased two memberships and made a donation. Donations over $20 are eligible to receive a charitable contributions receipt! “My parents are seniors and I bring my family to the family cottage each summer … do I need to get my own family membership?” YES! 3. Single Family Membership. Most membership forms look like this … one family in one cottage purchasing one membership and requesting a number of wristbands equal to the number of people in the family, no “extra” wristbands.

FRIENDSHIP FIRES
Part 1 of a 6 part series on Friendship & Bullying Special to the VB Herald by Marianne Vardalos When it comes to our children, conflict is often charged with negative meanings and reduced to concepts like “behavioural disorder”, “angermanagement issue” or “bullying”, particularly when our children are the victims. Even when they are the perpetrators, our emotional responses can lead us to be overprotective, reactionary, defensive and even in denial. A more rational part of us knows that most of the painful conflicts our children encounter are not with some common school-yard bully, but with friends, siblings and relatives. But they hurt, so we hurt, and we want to extinguish the friendship fire before it spreads. Our own adult relationships tell us so much about conflict. That we have some crummy people in our lives; that we don’t have as much control as we would like; that not everyone who looks like an adult acts like one. But also that conflict can be an opportunity to bring about something positive because it requires communication, transformation and reconciliation. These are our healthy relationships…and these are what we want for our children. GirlPower is a friendship program for tween girls with the ultimate goal of seeing them in stronger, healthier friendships. In August, 2014, GirlPower will be at Victoria Beach, offering workshops for girls 6-12 and their parents. Unlike many anti-bullying programs which seek to eliminate conflict by advocating zero-tolerance policies, this program is aimed at better equipping girls to manage conflict and understand that conflict is part of a normal friendship. Girls are taught to surround themselves with friends who treat them with respect and gain their trust precisely through moments of conflict which, when dealt with honestly, lead to better self-understanding and greater respect of differences. GirlPower lays the groundwork at an early age so that girls create a network of support which is in place as they leave their teens and enter the turbulent adult world. GirlPower’s skills-based program provides practical, step-by-step instruction for dealing with conflict in a way that leads to growth, integrity and strength of character. We’re on a mission to end the stereotype that girls are mean, catty, and gossipy. We help girls learn to create more transparent female relationships and better prepare them to deal with the growing complexity and emotions of life after High School. The programs are designed to help three groups of girls: 1. Potential Victims: By learning that they deserve to be respected and by gaining the tools to manage unhealthy relationships, potential victims learn to identity and cope with conflict before it festers and becomes bullying. If it already has become bullying, the girls learn the various avenues to get support and a variety of strategies from standing up to a friend who is not respecting their wishes, to using “quick comebacks” in the face of unrelenting teasing.
The Anglican Parish of St. Michael VICTORIA BEACH
The Anglican Parish of St. Michael 8th and Pine, VB invites you to worship with us each Sunday in July and August at 9:00 am in a service of Holy Communion. Note: September 1st we will recommence regular services at 11:30 am
Please join us… all are welcome!
Victoria Beach HERALD 2. Potential Bullies: By letting them know what acceptable behaviours looks like in a friendship, potential bullies learn that conflict can be healthy only if it is taken through the full cycle to resolution. Using the language of “Friendship Fires”, potential bullies learn that conflicts stemming from feelings of injustice are legitimate but they also learn that the consequences for their unwanted behaviour are that they will be stood up to. Through roleplay they learn better ways to manage their feelings of aggression. 3. The Silent Majority of Girls: By providing ‘bystanders’ with support and a safety zone from unfriendly relationships, the silent majority learn that ‘survival’ does not have to be the goal in Girl World. Armed with the language of friendship, girls can go beyond the realm of ‘not making waves’ to a place where they identify conflict as a necessary process that brings about clarity, communication and stronger friendships. They also learn they have a moral obligation to stand up for a friend but not to get stuck in the middle of conflicts not of their doing. As parents, how can we come to view conflict as only one type of a broad spectrum of relationships that we have with other people? And how can we embrace conflict as a phenomenon that can be transformed into something that benefits everyone? A good place to start is to recognize that conflict isn’t simply “anger” or “hostility”, and that conflict is actually caused by different beliefs. Researchers, Roy Eidelson and Judy Eidelson (2003) postulate that five broad belief domains play a central role in triggering, managing or constraining conflict between individuals and/or groups: “superiority”, “injustice”, “vulnerability”, “distrust”, and “helplessness”. Each of these beliefs will be discussed in this series special to the VB Herald. If your child and another child (a friend, neighbour or cousin) recount the same conflict, their differing points of view will very likely be impacted by at least one of these belief domains. By broadening our understanding of these belief triggers, we acknowledge that conflict inevitably accompanies diversity. From there, it is a short distance to embracing conflict as the potential for growth. References: Eidelson, Roy, J; Eidelson, Judy I (2003). “Dangerous ideas: Five beliefs that propel groups toward conflict”. American Psychologist 58 (3): 182–192. Next edition of the VB Herald, Part 2 in this 6 part series, “Superiority” Marianne Vardalos, Ph.D., is a sociologist and educator in the field of critical media literacy, social justice and gender equity. As a tenured professor at Laurentian University, Barrie Campus, Ontario, Marianne lectures, facilitates workshops and hosts seminars on the social construction of gender in popular culture and society at large. As a Licensed Girl Power Facilitator, she seeks to inspire young girls to create their own destiny, to seek healthy, reciprocal relationships and to cultivate within themselves the strength to reach their personal goals. She will be hosting a series of workshops for girls 6-13 and their parents in at Victoria Beach in August 2014. 4. Renters. Many people rent their cottages for a portion of the season. Often renters have families of their own and wish to participate in VB Club activities and this requires the renters to purchase a membership of their own! NOTE: People wanting to enjoy tennis while renting and/or visiting require a membership and toe tag to play tennis or participate in VB Club Tennis events.
Victoria Beach Club
2013 Membership Drive We would like to welcome everyone to Victoria Beach for another great summer! The Victoria Beach Club has been busy over the winter months organizing another season of fun activities for the whole family. You’ll be able to see the line-up in the much-anticipated Calendar of Regular and Special Events (it’s RED this year). It will be available during the V.B Club Membership Drive taking place this July long weekend. The Victoria Beach Club, an organization of volunteers, sponsors many of the recreational programs and events held during the summer. The Recreational Programs offered include: swimming, tennis and golf lessons, yoga, aerobics, mixed bridge, movies, arts and crafts for children, supervised hikes and bicycle rides, teen nights and family recreation night—just to name a few. Some of the Special Events include: sports day, beach events, the sandcastle building contest, the cross country run, the masquerade, the dog show, open swims, and tournaments for tennis, soccer, and volleyball. The Club is responsible for the publication of the Herald, the maintenance of the swimming dock, the clubhouse and the tennis courts, as well as the salaries of the recreation director, the recreation and tennis court assistants, the librarians and certified swim instructors. The major source of revenue to provide all these programs and services is through the sale of memberships and club donations. We need your support to continue the traditions that have made Victoria Beach so special. Please support the VB Club by buying one or more memberships for your family and any visitors you may expect. To help the Club out even more, in addition to buying your membership, you can make a tax-deductible donation to the Club. (Canvassers will provide a taxreceipt for donations of $20 and up). Should you not need a membership, perhaps you could still consider making a donation, to help maintain the traditions of VB. Again this year memberships will be $40 per family (a great bargain!). A single Family is defined as mother and/ or father and their dependent children. Memberships are non-transferable to other relatives, friends or renters.
They are encouraged to purchase a membership at the info booth or the tennis courts. The membership is good for the season. Drop-in fees are not allowed, members only. Several memberships can be sold at the same cottage – one for each family at the cottage. Memberships are sold to cottage owners and renters as well as cottagers in other beach communities. A membership entitles you to voting privileges (1 vote for each $40 membership). Payment by cheque is preferred. Cheques should be payable to The Victoria Beach Club. Please remember that you must wear your wristband to all VB Club activities in order to participate in any club event. Each family member will receive a wristband upon the purchase of a membership. NOTE to Parents—it would be a good idea to write your child’s name on the wristband in the event that it gets lost. Replacements for lost wristbands are available for $5.00. Wristbands will be checked at events. If you miss the Membership Drive you can buy your membership at the swimming lesson registration on Sunday, June 30 at the Clubhouse (we will start selling memberships at 9:30am which is a half hour before swim registration starts), or throughout the summer at the Library (during regular hours), Tennis Courts and the V.B. Info Booth. The Membership Drive for the Victoria Beach Club is planned for Saturday, June 29th to Monday, July 1st. Volunteer canvassers will be going door to door to assist you in the purchase of memberships for your family. Canvassers can also take payment for your tennis shoe tags ($10.00 per person). To obtain your shoe tag, you will need to take your membership application receipt to the tennis court. Volunteers are always needed for Membership Drive! If you would like to be added to our list of canvassers please let Pam know at 756-3682. It’s a great way to get reacquainted with your beach neighbours after a long winter and it provides a valuable service to the Club. V.B. Membership: Pam Beazley, Lise Simonsen, Trish Nesbitt

Festival organizer Glenn Halgren says: ““Two days of great entertainment can go a long way to help our community benefit for years to come. It’s the volunteers and sponsors that are making this all happen for our community and we can’t thank them enough.” Thanks to the commitment of our dedicated festival fans, as well as the support of outstanding volunteers and generous area residents and businesses, we’ve have raised over $150,000 to date.” Go to the Festival’s new website at summerwindsfest. com to plan your unique festival experience, or join the excitement as a volunteer.

Welcome Back from your Herald Staff
The editors and publishing staff of the Victoria Beach Herald welcome our readers back for another fabulous summer of all the delights our community and our Club have to offer. We feel it important in this first issue to give our readers and contributors an update on who is producing your VB Club paper, how it is produced, and how and when you might contribute content of your own to the weekly issues. Again this year your Herald editors are Barbara Pritchard and Kevin DubĂŠ. They are also contributors of some of the photographs published of weekly Club events. The paper is physically typeset, assembled, printed and finished by Lana Meier. Lana also produces several community newspapers in the Stonewall area so she is a very experienced newspaper publisher. Lana also manages the advertising for the Herald. Anil Kaul is the representative of the VB Club Executive who represents the Herald to the Club. From week to week, you may see special interest pieces from Free Press reporter Geoff Kirbyson, and hopefully other compelling content from people reading this now! The Herald welcomes submissions from our readers, members of our community who have an interesting story, event news, etc. The Herald is a service of the Victoria Beach Club and, as such, we publish news and information to our members, for our members, and about our members. Each week, 1,300 to 1,500 copies of the Herald are printed and distributed within VB. We will soon put each weekly edition of the Herald online in PDF format for those who prefer to read it on computers, tablets, and smartphones. An announcement on this will follow in the next few weeks. The Herald is printed on Tuesday, assembled on Wednesday for Thursday delivery to Victoria Beach. This means that digital production happens Monday. Working backwards, content for each weekly edition must be locked Sunday at noon to allow the editors time to proofread and assemble the content for what Lana must do on Monday. This is why we have a weekly deadline for submissions at the end of day on Friday. (exceptions, of course, for VB Club events that happen Sunday morning or afternoon). Last year we established an inbox dedicated to the Herald. Anybody is welcome to submit content to vbherald@shaw.ca. This inbox will be monitored daily and as of this first edition we have already received over two dozen submissions so the inbox works!!

Articles, classified ads, letters to the editor, Club activity write-ups, photos ‌ these are examples of the types of content we welcome you to submit to this email address. We can accept content in almost any format; however, we prefer a format that we can edit. Email, Word documents, text files are examples. We will work with PDF files but prefer more easily editable formats. For those without access to email, or to a computer, there are other choices. The good people at the VB Library have a working computer and USB Sticks. So if you have a computer but no Internet access feel free to borrow a USB stick and return it to the library. No computer? Visit the Library and type your submission on their computer. Just because of the volume of content submitted for many issues, please limit your submissions to fewer than 600 words when possible. This does not apply to the event coordinators i.e. Sports Day winners, etc. Editors who receive content well in advance of the end of day on Friday are very appreciative!! The Victoria Beach Herald is non-profit and funded exclusively by revenues generated by the advertising you see in our weekly issues. The elected members of the Victoria Beach Board oversee the contents and the tone of the paper. The Herald is a great Victoria Beach institution and all of us working to produce its weekly pages are privileged to continue the tradition in 2013. Happy reading! Herald Staff

They will wrap up the day by assisting with our first Rogers Rookie Tournament from 1:00-3:00 p.m. You can sign up for both of these events at the kiosk. $180.00 $110.00 $4.50 Priceless
Well, actually there is a cost. But for a meagre $10.00, you get lessons, clinics, tournaments, GVS and endless hours of play in a beautiful setting. What other club offers this type of value? How fortunate we all are! This year you can beat the rush and purchase your membership or pick up your shoe tags down at the courts on Sunday from 10:00 til 3:00. Please remember your yellow membership receipt if you are picking up your shoe tags. Beginning Tuesday morning, everyone will be required to wear a shoe tag in order to play. We have a great crew working at the courts again this year. Court attendants for the first half of the season include Ben Drybrough (returning head court attendant), Abby Eyford, John Guest, Eric Kapilik, and Sam Brownell. These young people are keen to give you a positive and fun-filled VB tennis experience! This season we are focusing on tennis programming for children, teens, and adults. We have kept all the programs we had last year, added a few and made some adjustments. Please note that all of our additional programming will take place during the afternoons when the courts are less busy. We have doubled the frequency of kids’ tennis lessons. We feel that one lesson per week is too infrequent to make any significant improvement in a child’s skills or maintain their interest. All three age groups, 5-6 years, 7-9 years, and 10+, will now have two lessons per week. The lessons will start later than last year which might make mornings less hectic for late risers. Keeping in mind that the courts are busiest from 8:00-10:30, we have avoided scheduling any activities during this time slot, six out of seven days a week. Please keep in mind that these lessons occupy no more than 2 courts. To spark some interest in teen tennis, we have invited one or two past tennis heroes to play King of the Court with the teens. We have also changed Teen Nights to Mondays and Wednesdays to avoid any conflict with the Kid’s Movie night. For the adults, we have freed up more prime court time by moving kids’ tennis lessons to later in the day. We have increased GVS to twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:30. We will also continue to offer Robert Kennedy lessons on Mondays from 1:00-4:00. Both of these activities were very popular last year. We noticed that there was a group of adults who seemed to be very keen on improving their tennis skills last summer. In this regard, we are introducing “Hit with a Pro” lessons. George Kylar, Roland Burrell and Geoff Kirbyson will each offer an afternoon of lessons this summer. For the youngest set, we are planning a Family Fun Night for 3-6 year olds and their parents (one night only). We will have games, activities and races with a focus on fun. Hopefully, this will make the tennis courts a less intimidating place for the wee ones when it is their turn for lessons. A schedule of all tennis activities can be found on your membership

Ben Drybrough (Head Tennis)
Hi everybody! I am looking forward to another great summer at the VB tennis courts! Everything is shaping up very well and this should be one of the best summers yet. I have been at VB for my entire life, hanging out at the tennis courts which has become my favourite spot. My favourite bakery item is an apple turnover with cream. Running into the water one year I broke my foot on a rock which was definitely my lowlight. And blue is way better than green because it is the colour of the lake (supposed to be at least). Hope to see you around the courts!
Abby Eyford
Welcome home VBers! My name is Abby and I can’t wait for another amazing summer at the Victoria Beach tennis courts! I just graduated high school and am ready to experience university in the fall. My favorite bakery item is a cheese biscuit; I can eat multiple at a time. I would have to say bike crashes are my worst enemy, especially when it comes to braking too quickly! Trust me, don’t do it! I love green because that’s the colour we’ll be seeing all summer biking around VB!
John Guest
My name is John Guest and I am very excited to be returning for another summer at the tennis courts. I have enjoyed playing tennis at VB for the past several summers. My favorite bakery items are dream cookies and cinnamon buns. The worst thing that has ever happened to me was when I was a little boy I was swimming in the waves and my bathing suit fell off. I had to wait in the water, for what seemed like hours, until my mom brought me another one. My favorite thing to do at VB is to lay on the beach and relax. Hope to see you all at the courts this summer!

Hi my name is Sam Brownell and this is my second year working at the Victoria Beach tennis courts. I have been going to VB every summer for my whole life. I’m going into grade 11 at St. Paul’s High School and I play hockey, football, rugby and tennis. At VB I love pier jumping, going to the beach and playing tennis.

I have been going to VB before I can remember! My favorite baked good from the bakery is a happy face cookie. My worst accident was when I decided to teach myself how to ride with no handle bars. While going down Gibson I hit a pot hole and wiped out pretty hard. My favorite thing to do at VB is to hang out with my friends and family, golf, fish, play tennis, lounge and jump off the pier… I can’t pick one favorite thing. If I had to choose between blue and green, I would choose blue because I’d rather go to the beach and swim in blue water than green water.

The Swystonian 2013
This year the tournament experienced beautiful weather, incredible social events, and a bit of golf. Graham Cameron hosted the kick-off “Colonel Sanders Dinner” on the Thursday. The group recognized the passing of a good friend. John Homik loved the camaraderie of the event and enjoyed being the official deliverer of the KFC. A new Colonel Sanders trophy was commissioned in John’s honour. Friday night’s festivities were held at John Heppenstall’s and Saturday night’s awards dinner was hosted by Al Morrish in his renovated cottage (Al is offering tours to the women of VB). The awards were MC’d by John Heppenstall and Jeff Swystun gave a presentation on the Swystonian in the 1970’s. Special thanks to Greg Loader for putting the whole event together. Here are the golf results but the Swystonian is not really about the golf: John Homik Memorial Colonel Sanders Trophy Won by Winning a Skill Contest & Eating the Most Chicken Bob Sudermann (he ate 17 pieces)

*As usual, we will do our best to have the various areas well labeled, but we rely on our experienced VBers to help anyone looking overwhelmed. Thank you in advance. *Please note that persons in default of payment from last year will not be allowed to register this year until their accounts are cleared by cash payment. *Again, we are asking you to “know” your expected date of departure. Too often we have found that suddenly a child will greet the instructor with “Today is my last day!”. Of course the instructor, not having known this, has not prepared a progress report, and is unable to complete one while teaching that day’s lesson. The child is disappointed. We hope that asking for this date in advance will eliminate this problem. The date is not intended to be binding. You are free to change your mind, though we will still require two or three days notice if you decide to leave earlier than your stated date. *If you cannot attend Registration Day, Jevian will be available for swimming registrations and the purchase of VB Club Memberships daily at the Swim Dock from 9:30-11:00 am (at the Clubhouse if it is raining). The above fees apply. The base rate for Red Cross Swim Kids is $25.00 for three weeks or any part thereof. Please ensure that you have your copy of the VB Club membership form and medical insurance numbers and either cash or cheque payment. *Looking forward to seeing you on Swim Registration Day, Sunday, June 30th from 10am – 12pm @ the Clubhouse. Happy Canada Day! ~Brad Nechwediuk & Anndrea O’Connor

Well, well welcome back ...... to where we all belong and all love this place. We can all be thankful that the weather is finally as it should be (and just in time, too). I welcome back Staff Sergeant Paul “Lightning” McQUEEN and Sergeant Clyde “bike guy” RAVEN, both former Winnipeg Police members. I also welcome back Constable Mathew PICARD and new Constables Dean FARGUSON and Ken POOLE. Ask them yourself what their nicknames are this summer. Bears are not a problem this year and they will continue to NOT be a problem if we do not use bird feeders, handle our household garbage responsibly and in general do nothing to attract them to us via the food chain. If there is no food for them you will not see them. We have attempted to regulate traffic more effectively near the front gate and have put up 7 orange delineator poles on the middle of the road as you approach the front gate. Please stay in your correct lane and do not turn left to get into the VB parking lot early. Also, please keep the other lane open by not making a half turn and then stopping, thereby blocking the lane. We appreciate it when we get invited to your parties but we are usually invited by your neighbours … to stop your party. Want us? then by all means have a large fire, play loud music, play drinking games which require shouting loudly and swearing and stay outside instead of going inside at 11pm. Please be courteous when we arrive, though because, after all, you DID invite us. If you party in a manner respectful of your neighbours, we will not see you and by all means, enjoy your friends, the summer season and cottage life at Victoria Beach. Fireworks next weekend … Sunday June 30th at the pier at 10:45 pm … and then on Monday night July 1st at 10’ish from Saffies Store in Albert Beach. We will be piped down to the beach at 10’ ish to enjoy the fireworks on the beach. Bicycle auction Sunday June 30th at 2 pm at the Police Office (part of the VB Fire Hall ). Victoria Beach HERALD
New Bicycle Helmet Legislation governs young VB Cyclists On May 1st, 2013 a new law took effect in Manitoba that makes it compulsory for cyclists under the age of 18 to wear a suitable helmet while cycling. The law also applies to an individual under that age when the individual is a passenger on a bicycle or on or in anything attached
to or towed by a bicycle. Helmets must be certified by standards such as the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), Snell Memorial Foundation, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) or the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
Parents and guardians are responsible to ensure their children are wearing bicycle helmets when cycling. If you are the parent of someone under 18 that is not wearing a bike helmet while cycling, you can be ticketed under The Highway Traffic Act of Manitoba. This law also provides an alternative to paying a fine, for cyclists who have received their first ticket for not wearing a helmet. They can take the Manitoba Bike Helmet Safety Course and have their fine dismissed. The course provides cyclists with important safety information about bike helmets. With the prevalence of children on bicycles here at Victoria Beach, and with parking restrictions now in effect, this is a reminder to all of us of this new, common sense, requirement!
Best Spot on the Lot Raffle 2012 Another successful raffle this year. Everyone supported this and all the tickets were sold. We turned over $1200.00 to the Victoria Beach Medical Trust Fund. The Victoria Beach Community Centre
With Phase 2 of the new Community Centre on Highway 59 nearing completion, it is fitting that some quick facts be presented as we prepare to open the East Beaches newest state-of-the art multi-purpose facility! The development of this multi-functional facility will be capable of well serving both the year round residents and the summer cottage communities.
This multipurpose space is so versatile that the possibilities are limited only to the imagination! With the curling area now having a cement floor we intend on having art shows, craft sales, council meetings, socials, bingo, weddings, exercise classes and drama club productions in this area. All of the items that used to be held in the hall of the old site. Smaller events could be held in our 1500 sq ft viewing area upstairs or in our 1700 sq ft atrium. Our intention for the Post Office to move in this fall; we are hoping to have a small coffee shop operating along with the sale of newspapers. This could also be our “10th hole” for those using our park and walk trail. This facility is not operated by the RM of Victoria Beach and does not depend on tax dollars for operation and/or maintenance. It is totally a volunteer effort. The location is very noteworthy. The site change has brought the facility out of our summer vehicle restricted area, thereby reinforcing appropriate land use and the quiet cottage lifestyle, by reducing the impact of club activities on adjacent cottage owners...
All residents, seasonal and permanent, benefit from a thriving local community. The Victoria Beach Fire Department offers fire and EMS service all the way to Belair and beyond into Lester Beach (EMS). It is vital that the area has enough to offer young families in order to keep a strong force of men and women who volunteer in the emergency services. Summer or winter, seasonal, permanent, weekenders or “just visiting”... the Victoria Beach Community Center will add quality to the life for all that choose to use it. All donations over $10.00 will receive a receipt for income tax purposes. Receipts for pledged amounts will be provided in the year that the actual amount is received. The initial fundraising campaign is being broadened. This portion of the campaign will begin this summer and details are being finalized. Children’s Fishing Derby - Saturday, July 6, 2013
The annual Children’s Fishing Derby will be held a week earlier than normal this year due to some scheduling conflicts. We will also start an hour earlier as well. But fear not intrepid anglers, this should all add up to one thing … MORE FISH!!!!! Let’s see if we can top the two Master Angler fish caught last year. All anglers 12 and under are invited to haul their parents out of bed, grab their gear and head down to the pier for some fishing fun from 9am until 11am. Don’t forget your VB Club wristbands for admission. Just a quick reminder that all Manitoba fishing regulations apply, one rod per angler and all barbs must be pinched. See you on the pier! VB Yacht Club News Happy Canada Day cottagers and welcome to another fun and exciting summer at Victoria Beach. Our anticipation to get out on the water has grown during the extended spring and is now nearing a fevered pitch. We are locked and loaded with sailing schools for all ages running all summer and several weekend windsurf clinics. For more information and registration see next week’s Herald ad or follow the link at www.vbyc.ca for online registration and payment. As always you can send an email to: vbyccommodore@gmail.com for further inquiries. The club has a nice complement of dinghies for young and old and we welcome members to come down and take these boats out at your leisure when they are not in use for sailing schools. In addition anyone is welcome to come down to the club and crew in weekend races, we are always looking for enthusiastic new faces. Just show up around 9:30am and we can get you set up, it’s a great way to get acquainted with the sport and see if it is for you. The VBYC is in the second year of our plan to re-energize youth sailing. For the second straight year we will be hosting Junior Racing on Saturday mornings. All members or anyone who has or is currently taking sailing lessons is welcome to come down and use the club boats for some friendly competition. Certified instructors will set the course and be on hand to supervise and offer tips. This is an unparalleled way to improve sailing skills and to get more time on the water and the best part is it is free! We sincerely hope that you and your family will consider giving sailing a try this summer. Just one more way to have the best summer ever. Have a great weekend and we hope to see you around the club.
