Do your memories of Victoria Beach hold a special place in your heart? By Bruce Eyford, VB Planned Giving. Most people would like to be remembered for contributing to the life of their community. Victoria Beach is a unique community, and truly a special place on earth. It is a place where our children can grow, learn and most of all have fun. All of this is made possible by programs and facilities developed and run by the Victoria Beach Club. The Victoria Beach Club is a registered charitable organization and is operated by a volunteer board. You can make a charitable donation to the Victoria Beach Club at any time and receive a tax receipt for your gift. Another option is to earmark a gift for the future from your estate that will not only benefit the club, but will be tax effective as well. A “planned gift” such as a bequest from your Will, stocks, life insurance, or an asset such as real estate can help to keep the programs of the Victoria Beach Club strong for future generations. Planned Gifts can take many forms; · A Bequest, i.e. a gift through your will as a specific amount or a percentage of what is left after you have provided for your loved ones. It could also be property, stocks and bonds or other non-cash assets. A bequest also has tax benefits for your estate. · Outright Gift; Most outright gifts are made in cash, but as with bequests anything of value may be given. I’m sure if you are anything like me, you are just SO relieved that summer is finally here!!! Doesn’t it feel good to know that our wonderful programs are only a week away? Once again great activities have been planned for the summer and wonderful staff and volunteers are in place to organize and implement these activities. Everyone on the VBC board has worked tirelessly over the winter to ensure that all of our programs and activities will be delivered with excellence. There are some exciting new additions to the VBC this summer. I am pleased to announce the creation of our very own VBC website. The purpose of the website is to provide enhanced communication opportunities for our members, particularly members who are not able to always be out at Victoria Beach, but would like to keep their “finger on the pulse”. The Herald will also be available on the website ensuring that even if we run out of Heralds one week you can always find out the latest information or view pictures on the website. A big thank-you to Chris Thomas and Danielle Hall for volunteering their valuable time and expertise to develop this wonderful new resource. The website will be fully operational by July 1. Further details will be in the next Herald. The second new addition to the VBC is the purchase of two Automated External Defibrillators (AED). The Heart

and Stroke Foundation along with the government of Manitoba has mandated that all community and recreation facilities have AED units available by 2014. Did you know that the use of a defibrillator increases the chance of a cardiac arrest victim’s survival by up to 75%? In order to encourage the purchase of these life-saving units, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba is offering special pricing and packages through to the end of 2013. By taking advantage of this special offer we were able to purchase two units with money that was donated to the VBC specifically earmarked for these units. Both units will be mounted in alarmed cabinets, with one of the units located in the clubhouse and the other at the tennis courts. This will ensure that an AED unit is within the recommended 3-minute radius of most of our VBC activities. Signage will clearly identify where these units are mounted. All of our staff will be trained in the use of the AED units. Like any insurance policy, let’s hope we never have to use them. There is more news to tell, but you will have to stay tuned. For now it’s time to sweep out the cobwebs, pour a nice glass of wine and enjoy this beautiful slice of paradise. See you on the avenues! Maureen Neuendorff

Letter to the Editor I’d like to thank the Victoria Beach community for giving me the wonderful experience of working and playing in beautiful VB for the last sixteen summers. I will have fond memories for years to come, of practicing medicine in such a unique setting, enjoying time there with my children, elderly mother and more recently, my grandchildren. I was surprised and disappointed to be told in March,

that the VB council had decided to “not service the doctor’s office” this summer. Equally disappointed were the other 3 doctors that had already committed to VB this year. I wish all a safe and healthy summer. Hope everyone manages to avoid the poison ivy this year. Dr. Carry Martens-Barnes

Update on The History of VB

The annual Victoria Beach Book sale will take place on Sunday July 7th from 1-3pm at the clubhouse! This is a great chance to stock up on your summer beach reads!! Some selections of books that will be offered are children’s, young adult, mystery, romance, science fiction and more! All of the money we raise goes directly to the Library and for buying new books! If you want to donate books or magazines from home or cottage, please drop them off at the Library when it is open. You can also leave your books on the boulevard by 8:00 am on Saturday July 8th to be picked up with the Flea Market donations. No Reader’s Digest, Dictionaries or Encyclopedias please! This year VB club members will be let into the book sale first! Thanks in advance for your support! We are looking forward to seeing you there!

Once again, a great opportunity to help the Victoria Beach Community Club and to pass on your treasures that are in good condition and need a new home. Last year, our crew raised $3,100 for our clubhouse. As your flea market conveners this year, we hope that everyone, both new and experienced will again support this important event. We believe that thanks to your ongoing support and encouragement and with the support of our wonderful VB community, our 2013 VB Club Flea market will again be a success. “Come on Down” to help with pricing, sorting, pick ups, set up, etc. between 8 am and10:30 am…the earlier the better. If you have a pick up truck, please bring a partner and a crew if possible and pick up an assigned route so that we do not miss anyone. Please bring work gloves if you are joining a truck crew. We’ll supply the latex gloves for sorting. If you have past flea market experience, please identify yourself and your area of expertise –pick up trucks, antiques, toys, artwork, linens, electrical, sporting goods, furniture, pricing, etc. Please put your articles out by 8 am Saturday morning, July 6th. Children’s Fishing Derby-Saturday, July 6, 2013

The annual Children’s Fishing Derby will be held a week earlier than normal this year due to some scheduling conflicts. We will also start an hour earlier as well. But fear not intrepid anglers, this should all add up to one thing … MORE FISH!!!!! Let’s see if we can top the two Master Angler fish caught last year. All anglers 12 and under are invited to haul their parents out of bed, grab their gear and head down to the pier for some fishing fun from 9am

Info Booth. The Membership Drive for the Victoria Beach Club is planned for Saturday, June 29th to Monday, July 1st. Volunteer canvassers will be going door to door to assist you in the purchase of memberships for your family. Canvassers can also take payment for your tennis shoe tags ($10.00 per person). We would like to welcome everyone to Victoria Beach for another great summer! The Victoria Beach Club has been busy over the winter months organizing another season of fun activities for the whole family. You’ll be able to see the line-up in the much-anticipated Calendar of Regular and Special Events (it’s RED this year). It will be available during the V.B Club Membership Drive taking place this July long weekend. The Victoria Beach Club, an organization of volunteers, sponsors many of the recreational programs and events held during the summer. The Recreational Programs offered include: swimming, tennis and golf lessons, yoga, aerobics, mixed bridge, movies, arts and crafts for children, supervised hikes and bicycle rides, teen nights and family recreation night—just to name a few. Some of the Special Events include: sports day, beach events, the sandcastle building contest, the cross country run, the masquerade, the dog show, open swims, and tournaments for tennis, soccer, and volleyball. The Club is responsible for the publication of the Herald, the maintenance of the swimming dock, the clubhouse and the tennis courts, as well as the salaries of the recreation director, the recreation and tennis court assistants, the librarians and certified swim instructors. The major source of revenue to provide all these programs and services is through the sale of memberships and club donations. We need your support to continue the traditions that have made Victoria Beach so special. Please support the VB Club by buying one or more memberships for your family and any visitors you may expect. To help the Club out even more, in addition to buying your membership, you can make a tax-deductible donation to the Club. (Canvassers will provide a tax-receipt for donations of $20 and up). Should you not need a membership, perhaps you could still consider making a donation, to help maintain the traditions of VB. Again this year memberships will be $40 per family (a great bargain!). A single Family is defined as mother and/or father and their dependent children. Memberships are non-transferable to other relatives, friends or renters. They are encouraged to purchase a membership at the info booth or the tennis courts. The membership is good for the season. Drop-in fees are not allowed, members only. Several memberships can be sold at the same cottage – one for each family at the cottage. Memberships are sold to cottage owners and renters as well as cottagers in other beach communities. A membership entitles you to voting privileges (1 vote for each $40 membership). Payment by cheque is preferred. Cheques should be payable to The Victoria Beach Club. Please remember that you must wear your wristband to all VB Club activities in order to participate in any club event. Each family member will receive a wristband upon the purchase of a membership. NOTE to Parents—it would be a good idea to write your child’s name on the wristband in the event that it gets lost. Replacements for lost wristbands are available for $5.00. Wristbands will be checked at events.

Summer 2013! It’s finally here and we couldn’t be happier to be back for another great VB summer. For those that don’t know me, my name is Bruce Sirrell and I will be the rec director. We have some familiar faces back and also some new ones as your 2013 Rec Staff. I am pleased to introduce the 2013 Rec Staff: Head Rec Assistant, Tori Grant, Rec assistants Alanna Vielhaber, Emily Brownell, Jessie Hoole and Brendon Proulx. We have some great things lined up for this summer. Here’s what’s up for week 1. Hey everyone, my name’s Alanna Vielhaber and I’m super excited to spend another summer as a Rec Assistant! Many of you have probably gotten to know me these past few years around VB at games, movies or just around the beach, but for those who haven’t here’s a little bit about me! I’ve been coming to Victoria Beach for as long as I can remember and it’s always the highlight of my year! I’ve just finished my first year at the University of Manitoba and I am hoping to get into the Faculty of Nursing in the future to specialize in paediatrics. During the winter I spend most of my time at Shelley Shearer School of Dance competing and teaching as a full time student. I can’t wait to see all your familiar faces this summer as well as meet a few new ones! See you all at world domination!

Hi everybody! My name is Brendan Proulx and I’m 16 years old. I love basketball, bike rides and hanging out at the beach…most likely with a pecan bun in my hand! I just finished grade 11 at J.H Bruns collegiate and my favorite subject is history. I have been coming down to VB since I was born and I’m very excited to have the opportunity to be able to spend another summer out at the lake. Hopefully it is an enjoyable summer for everyone and I am looking forward to getting to know all of you!

Jessie Hoole As some of you may know, my name is Tori Grant. I am 20 years old and just finished my second year of biology at the University of Calgary. I am returning for my third year with the rec program, and second year as head rec assistant, and can’t wait for the summer to start! I’m looking forward to movie and game nights, and hope to see as many people coming out to the events as possible! I can’t wait to see all of the familiar faces from past years and to meet some new people also! Let’s make summer 2013 the best one yet!

As a kid I always loved going to kids games and movies and am so excited to get the opportunity to be a Rec assistant this summer! Although I live in Toronto I have been coming down to VB every summer since I was two weeks old. When I am at Victoria Beach I like visiting the bakery and hanging out with my summer friends at the beach. When it’s not summer I go to school (Going into grade 12) and enjoy playing many sports along with alpine ski racing. I am looking forward to meeting many new kids and having fun with them this summer! I’m Emily. I just graduated from St. Mary’s Academy in Winnipeg. I’ve been coming to VB my whole life and have wanted to be a Rec Assistant since I was little and I used to go to kids games and bike hikes! Some of my favourite things about VB are tennis, stuffing myself with bakery food, and seeing all my friends from out of town. I’m looking forward to a long hot summer (hopefully)! See you around the beach!

Grilled Chicken Berry Salad The hot days of summer call for light eating, such as this delicious main course salad that combines Ontario Strawberries, grilled chicken and whole grain pasta.

Preparation Dijon Honey Dressing: In bowl, whisk together wine vinegar, oil, balsamic vinegar, mustard, garlic, honey, salt and pepper. (Make-ahead: can be covered and refrigerated for up to 2 days.) Salad: Remove 2 tbsp (25 mL) of the dressing and brush both sides of chicken. Place on greased grill over medium-high heat; close lid and grill, turning once, until chicken is no longer pink inside, 10 to 12 minutes. Transfer to cutting board and let stand for 5 minutes. Slice diagonally into thin strips. (Make-ahead: can be covered and refrigerated for up to 24 hours.)

Dijon Honey Dressing: • 3 tbsp (45 mL) each white wine vinegar and extra-virgin olive oil In large pot of boiling salted water, cook pasta until al dente, about 13 • 2 tbsp (25 mL) balsamic vinegar minutes. Drain and refresh under cold water. In serving bowl, combine • 1 tbsp (15 mL) Dijon mustard pasta, strawberries, green onions, sweet pepper, basil and chicken; toss • 2 cloves garlic, put through garlic press or minced with remaining dressing. Sprinkle with cheese; toss again. Taste and • 1 tsp (5 mL) liquid honey adjust seasonings if necessary. • 1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt • 1/4 tsp (1 mL) pepper Tip: Use a thermometer Salad: to check the internal • 3 boneless skinless chicken breasts temperature of cooked • 3 cups (750 mL) whole wheat rotini pasta chicken. It seems that since the election of July 2010 our municipality has been faced with one difficult situation after another. The unprecedented storm of October 2010 brought flooding to low-lying areas in Albert Beach, areas off of David Road and Pelican Point and we witnessed major erosion to various beaches and shorelines. Dikes along the shorelines of Albert Beach, Wanasing and along the Y were reinforced and brought up to regulation high water levels. The lake level was high going into the summer of 2011 and that saw higher than normal water levels at Lost Lagoon and in the Sandy Bay area not to mention little or no beaches for the public to enjoy. The health of our lake continues to be a huge concern and the blue green algae seems to arrive earlier and stay longer causing health issues for swimmers and pets, and water quality concerns. We also had drought-like conditions last summer and irresponsible water usage was a problem in our community. Please do your part to respect and protect our environments here at VB. Use eco-friendly, lake-friendly products, limit water consumption, use common sense and get some more exercise by walking the extra distance to utilize the stairs and ramps provided to access our beautiful beaches. We held public meetings and formed a community task force to provide us with suggestions and input regarding our shoreline issues. We hired and continue to work with Pete Zuzek of Baird Engineering to work toward a detailed study of our shorelines and beaches. We had discussions with the community regarding our Draft Development Plan, now stalled due to lack of government resources and unpredictability regarding the real possibility of forced amalgamation with our neighbouring municipality, the RM of Alexander. Our Public Works team removed hundreds of dead and dying Balsams from our RM in an effort to lessen the effects of the disease and/or bugs they carry infecting other trees in the area. In late May the Public Works guys scooped up hundreds of dead carp from the shoreline at Albert Beach. They were either caught in the late spring ice or had a parasite that caused them to die in such dramatic numbers and the wind was blowing from the north-east, pushing them up on to the shore. In the last couple years we utilized a more environmentally friendly chipping program in the Spring and Fall instead of the previous back-hoe method used for pick-up of our brush piles. We encourage all property owners to continue to bag your leaves for pick-up. A reminder though that your building debris, old furniture, bbq’s, etc. are your responsibility and you must take that garbage to the

Traverse Bay refuse site or arrange to have it picked up at your expense. Removing your deadfall and bagging your leaves for pick up help keep the fire risk down and our new fire sign on Highway #59 informs us all of the risk of fire in our area on an ongoing basis. It would take only one carelessly tossed cigarette butt or wayward spark to start a fire that could send a large part of our community up in flames in a heartbeat. All applications for a back yard fire pit, bonfire and fireworks will be given very serious consideration by our Fire Chief and Council prior to approval as the fire risk to our community is simply too great. The proposed amalgamation of our RM with the RM of Alexander is taking up an incredible amount of our time. We trust all property owners received letters from the RM outlining our concerns regarding amalgamation. Council registered individually to speak at the Standing Committee in the Provincial Legislature in opposition to Bill 33 – The Municipal Modernization Act - and we appreciate that many of you have registered to speak and have written letters in support of our position to remain independent and retain our resort municipality designation. At the time of writing this piece (June 1) we have not received notice regarding when the Standing Committee will hear submissions, what amendments may be made to the Bill or when decisions regarding our municipal future will be made. We also have been mandated by the Province to form a Police Board this past year. Albert Beach permanent resident Isabelle Brunel was appointed by the Government, long time summer resident John Gow was appointed by the Council and I am also on this Board. We are a liaison between our Police force, Council and the Community. We do not interfere or get involved with the day to day activities of our police but rather we oversee the financials, plan long term goals and set a strategic plan in concert with our Chief of Police. Please join us at our Police Board Public Meeting on July 9th at the Sr. Scene, 7 p.m. This summer two of our constables are living in the Doctors’ cottage on Birch Avenue. Council made a decision in March to no longer provide summer doctor services. Please see your yellow 2013 Information for Residents Card for medical care alternatives. Upcoming Council meetings are in the RM office in the city on Tuesday, July 9th at 1 p.m. and at the Sr. Scene on Tuesday, July 23rd at 7 p.m. Persons wishing to speak as a delegation must register with the office 7 days prior to the meeting. Novelty Tennis Tournament ~ August 18-19 2012 Well, Mother Nature didn’t exactly cooperate with us, but with the help of some expert squeegee operators and some much needed wind and sunshine, we were able to have a wonderful Novelty Tennis Tournament last August. MUSIC ON THE GREEN The German Society of Winnipeg Brass Band

Will be performing for your enjoyment on July 21st, 2013 , in the Art Vincent Memorial Band Stand on the (Village Green) from 2:00 p.m.

The Brass Band is part of the Community Bands of Manitoba and perform all around Manitoba and Northwest Ontario. The members are comprised of teachers, accountants, truck drivers, police officers, students, retirees etc. They play traditional German music, such as Polkas, Waltzes, Foxtrots, Marches as well as Latin numbers, with that fun Oompah sound. You may have heard them last spring when they entertained at the Fish Fry. Come out and listen to some good old time fun Music.
