VB Eight at the Gate – Red River Trail February 12, 2017 From the left: Rick D, Rick B, Kerri, Bob and Matt.
Yes we DO ride in the winter, and as you can see we also don’t always ride road bikes. Some of us ride mountain bikes, some hybrids as well as cyclo-cross bikes. This winter was great for a break from riding the trainer indoors as well as a change from cross country skiing. Our summer rides at VB started on the May long weekend at 10:00 for two weekends then at 09:00 for two weekends with the return to 08:00 this weekend. The group leaves from the “Gate” daily at 08:00, as it says on the shirt. We ride highway 59 to Albert Beach then Traverse Bay Rd., west to Hillside Beach and down Lakeshore Rd. to Lester Beach. The pace (25 – 35km/h) varies with the composition and size of the group as well as with the discussion topic of the day. Some days we will add some hills (ok “speed bumps”) and distance for people training for longer more challenging events. We participate in various fundraising rides and events; includ-

President’s Message
Welcome back to VB! Volunteers have been working hard over the winter to help make the summer fun for you and your family. We kept some things the same and came up with a few new ways of doing things. We’ve kept the following the same: Same fun activities and events that we’ve been enjoying for decades. $5 day passes are still available so that a non-VB Club member can participate in a day’s worth of activities. We are continuing to charge a $15 user fee to attend yoga for the summer. There will be gel bands for yoga sold during the membership drive and where memberships are sold (library, visitor center and tennis kiosk). You must purchase a VB Club membership as well as a yoga band to participate in yoga. Children under 13 will not be permitted to participate in yoga, so do not purchase yoga bands for them. We’ve changed some things: Increased activities to a 7 week calendar starting on July 3rd and ending on August 20th. Do to the popularity of yoga, there will now be an additional class on Mondays and Fridays. There will be classes Mondays and Fridays 9:00-10:15 and 10:45-noon, and Wednesdays 10:00-11:30. We ask that people only attend one of the Monday and Friday classes rather than both unless there is sufficient room. New activities have been added - details to be provided in upcoming Heralds: • Paint Night July 15th • Art Thursdays • Trivia Night August 4th • VB Film Festival August 5 & 6th • North 59 Fine Art Exhibition Aug 6th • Boot Camp • French lessons Wednesdays 6-7:30 excluding July 12 and August 2nd Only minor improvements have been made to the clubhouse over the past year. Work is still progressing on the design and plans for the expansion and restoration of the clubhouse. The reason for this project is two-fold. The first reason is to restore the existing structure doing things like levelling the clubhouse and replacing windows so
Victoria Beach HERALD
that it can be enjoyed for many years to come. The second reason for the project is to increase the usefulness and comfort of the clubhouse by having an expanded kitchen, better ventilation and a separate space that can be closed off to facilitate two activities occurring in the clubhouse at the same time. You can expect to see drawings as well as notices of community presentations in future heralds. The VB Club offers a fabulous opportunity to meet community minded people and give back to the community we all love! Four new volunteers have stepped up this year to replace volunteers who have donated a tremendous number of hours over the past several years. Lindsay Stevenson and Cathy Bizruchak took over from Jill Kirbyson and Shauna Filuk who efficiently and energetically organized all of the conveners and the Calendar for the VB Club for several years. Barb Hansford took over from Wendy Derksen who, as our secretary, kept us organized. Sheri Hyra is now the Director at Large and has been working hard over the winter to secure as many grants as Leslie Sarchuk worked so hard to get us in past years. We are lucky to have such fabulous volunteers! If you are looking for an opportunity to get involved at VB, there are a couple of opportunities opening up at the end of the summer. This summer represents the second year of my two year term as President and, as such, I will be looking for a replacement. Mike Clement, the current Vice President, has agreed to take on the President role. As such, we would be looking for a Vice President. Pam Beazley has been the yoga convener for the past couple of years and is now looking for a replacement. She transformed the program from 2 classes a week to 5 in her term and created a program that more than pays for itself with the sale of yoga wristbands to cover the cost of the expanded program. If you would like more information on either of these positions, please let me or another member of the Executive know. The tan lines may fade, but the memories will last a lifetime, Suzy Cramp
About the Victoria Beach Herald
One of the longest continuously publishing community newspapers in Canada, now in our 92nd year, the Victoria Beach Herald is a service of the Victoria Beach Club. The Herald prints nine issues each summer on Fridays from late June to mid-August. The Herald welcomes submissions from readers focused on family events, beach happenings, community issues, etc. Letters to the Editor are always welcome: they must be signed with the author’s name and be written with the understanding that many people read the Herald, including youngsters. Submissions should be sent via email to vbherald@shaw.ca. Those without access to email can place written submissions in the VB Herald mailbox behind the cash counter at the Victoria Beach General Store. Submission deadline is 4PM Fridays with the exception of VB Club event convenor submissions for events occurring on weekend days. Editor

Council would like to invite you all to come to an Open House on Saturday, June 24 from 2 to 4 p.m. An insert in your tax bill explains the financing of the structure. You also will have discovered that the bakery has been brought up to Health Standard, insulated and generally refurbished. The refurbished building will be an asset on our village green. The Reeve and Council would like to thank Lynne Kimelman and Tami Mitchell for the extra effort they put forth in the past four months. They have gone above and beyond to keep our Municipality moving forward. We would also like to welcome our new CAO, Andrew Glassco. We all look forward to serving you this year. Let us all enjoy and celebrate. REEVE AND COUNCIL

Victoria Beach HERALD
Victoria Beach Club 2017 Membership
Welcome back to the beach! We are very excited for another glorious summer at Victoria Beach! The Victoria Beach Club has been busy over the winter months organizing another season of fun activities for the whole family. You will be able to see the full line-up in the Calendar of Regular and Special Events (printed in PURPLE this year), which is provided with the purchase of a family membership. The Recreational Programs offered include swimming, tennis, yoga, aerobics, mixed-bridge, movies, arts and crafts for children, supervised hikes and bicycle rides, teen-nights and family recreation nights – just to name a few. Some of the Special Events offered are: Sports Day, Beach Events, the Sandcastle Building Contest, the Cross-Country Run, the Masquerade, the Dog Show, as well as open swims, and tournaments for tennis, soccer and volleyball. The Club is also responsible for the publication of the Herald, the maintenance of the swimming dock, the clubhouse and the tennis courts, as well as the salaries of the Recreation Director, the Recreation and Tennis Court Assistants, the Librarians and certified Swimming Instructors. A major source of revenue to provide these programs and events is the sale of memberships, and so to participate in the above programs and activities, a membership or day-pass is required. We need your support to continue the traditions that have made Victoria Beach a summer home to many. In addition to buying your membership, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to the Club (a tax-receipt will be provided for donations of $20 or more). Memberships are $50 per family. A single Family is defined as parent(s) and their dependent children. Memberships are non-transferable to other relatives, friends or renters. If additional memberships are needed after the Membership Drive, they can be purchased at the V.B. Info Booth (at the Gate), at the Library or at the Tennis Courts during their regular hours. The family membership is valid for the entire summer. Several memberships can be sold at the same cottage – one for each family at the cottage. Memberships can be purchased by Bacon N’ Egger® and Small Coffee for $4

cottage owners, as well as by renters, guests and cottagers in other beach communities – essentially, by anyone who wishes to participate in the V.B Club’s programs and activities. One membership also entitles you to voting privileges. Please remember that wristbands must be worn to all V.B. Club activities and programs in order to participate. Each family member will receive a PURPLE wristband upon the purchase of a membership. Note to Parents – please consider writing your child’s name on their wristband in case it is left behind at an event. Replacements for lost wristbands are available for $5.00 at the library and tennis courts. Where do I buy a family membership? The door-to-door V.B. Club Membership Drive will take place from June 30 th – July 2 nd. Over this weekend, volunteer canvassers will be going door to door to assist you in the purchase of memberships for your family. Canvassers can also take payment for your tennis shoe tags ($15 per person). To obtain your shoe tag, please take your membership application receipt to the tennis courts. We will also be selling memberships at the following times; Information Booth at the V.B. Gate, during their business hours (8:00 am – 8:00 pm) and at Clubhouse, from 10: 00 am – noon on Sunday, July 3rd Payment by cheque is preferred. Cheques should be made payable to The Victoria Beach Club. The Victoria Beach Club will be offering day-passes again this year. These passes will be available at the Tennis Courts, Library, and Information Booth at the V.B. Gate during their regular hours, at a fee of $5.00 each, and will allow the wearer to participate in all Club activities and programs for the day, as if they had a seasonal membership. The passes are for individuals, and are valid for the date for which they are marked only; wristbands may be purchased in advance, but the dates will be written on the wristbands by staff at the time of purchase. Volunteers are always needed for the Membership Drive! If you are interested please contact Monica at 204 461 1694. We are currently seeking 15 more volunteers for routes. Rec Staff Bios
Hi my name is Jaxin da Roza and I am excited to be your 2017 Head Rec Assistant! This is is my third year working as part of the Rec team and I’m looking forward to another great summer of activities. I live in Vancouver, BC, but I have been coming to Victoria Beach every summer since I was born, 18 years ago. I recently graduated from Vancouver College and will be studying commerce at the University
of Toronto this fall, where I will also be playing Varsity Lacrosse. My favourite part of VB is the beautiful beaches; perfect for long walks, rom-com novels, and watching the sunset
Hi, my name is Tia Davison and I am sixteen years old. I attend Shaftesbury High School and I will be entering grade eleven this upcoming fall. I love to play both indoor and outdoor soccer and I was the captain of my school volleyball team. My family and I have been coming out to Victoria Beach for the past five years. We are an active family and enjoy taking our dog Daisy for sunset walks on the beach and going on long bike rides… to the bakery. I have always loved participating in the many events offered by the VB Club and was always excited for every new craft and movie. This will be my first time as Rec. Assistant and I encourage everyone to come out to the activities and introduce yourself! I am really looking forward to making sure that this summer is filled with laughter and great memories, so I hope you will join me in having an awesome summer at VB!
Hi, my name is Hope McAuley and this is my first year being a Rec. Assistant. I just finished my first year at the University of Manitoba and will be returning there in the fall. I’ve been coming to Victoria Beach ever since I was a kid and look forward to being a part of the Rec. Team this year. My favourite part of the summer is spending time with my family and friends as well as going to the beach almost every day. I remember going to events as a little kid like the movies at the club house, beach activities, and sports days, and I am super excited to help make the summer as memorable and fun for everyone as they were for me. I can’t wait to meet new people at all the events and make it an awesome summer. It’ll be lots of fun so I hope to see everyone there!
Hi, my name is Karissa Bowden and I’m very excited to be a Rec Assistant this year! This fall I will be going into grade 11 in French Immersion at Kelvin High School. I am a competitive dancer at Kickit Dance Studio and my favourite dance styles are lyrical and ballet. In my spare time, I enjoy sketching, photography and playing volleyball. Some of my favourite things to do at VB are going on bike rides, getting treats at the bakery and spending time at the beach with a good book. I am looking forward to meeting everyone and having a great summer!
Hi VB! My name is Parker Menec for those who don’t know me. I worked as a Rec Assistant last summer and am looking forward to another summer here! I am 18 years old and have started my first year of university this past year in the education program at the University of Winnipeg. I am very excited to start another fun filled and sun filled summer with everyone!
Hi my name is Julia Beazley. I am currently 18 years old and I just finished my first year of university. I am working towards a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Manitoba and hopefully in the future make me way up to being an animator for Disney! I have a strong interest in dance and I would love to teach aerobics some day. In the summertime a really enjoy reading a book on the beach, hanging out with family and friends and creating art. I am really looking forward to another amazing summer at VB!
Hi there! My name is Matt Lawrence. I am currently at the wonderful age of 18 and just graduated from Kelvin High School. I dabble in the game of hockey and enjoy the Winnipeg Jets. I played on the Kelvin Clippers for the past 3 years and was assistant captain for my final year. Next year, I am moving to beautiful BC to play on a Junior B team. In the summer months, I enjoy catching some rays, hitting the beach, and having fun with pals. Hope everyone has a pretty neat summer!

Book Sale
The summer is just getting started, but maybe there’s still some spring cleaning to be done at your cottage! We don’t judge! In fact, we welcome with open arms any and all books hanging around from last season or seasons long gone! Make sure to pass on the power of organized words, ideas, and information to your fellow VBers by donating your books to the Victoria Beach Club Book Sale. The sale will be at the Clubhouse on Sunday, July 9th from 1-3 p.m. The profits will go towards the improvement and stocking of the VB Club Library, as well as various other VB Club initiatives. The Flea Market team will be collecting your books that are ready for new hands along with your Flea Market donations. Please make sure to put out the items before 8 a.m. in a secure container like a box or a plastic bag. Remember to be mindful of the weather so that if it’s rainy, you can cover your donations accordingly. We would appreciate a clear separation between Flea Market and Book Sale donations. Last but not least, we’re putting out a call for volunteers! If you have some time to spare on Saturday evening or Sunday morning for set-up or after 3 for clean-up, then come on down to the Clubhouse! New and returning volunteers are welcome. Extra hands make light work! Thank you for supporting the Victoria Beach Library! The Beazley and Edwards families

Art Thursdays at the V.B. Club House
What is Art Thursday on the calendar this summer? Each Thursday I am planning to run an art program that will be a mix of artists, crafts people, and dancers. Each teacher will be providing the materials required for each class and a description of the course. The teacher will be charging a fee for attending their class to cover the cost for teaching, travel, and materials. Prices will range from $20 to $50 for the three hours of artistic instruction. Examples include a watercolour class taught by Nancy-Lou Ateah, a stained-glass jewelry workshop, expressive dance class, spa soap making, work carving, and other ideas. These programs are designed for a young adult to adult/senior audience. Attendees are asked to sign up in advance as each instructor has a minimum and maximum for their class. The cut off for sign up will be the Tuesday each week before the Thursday program. Check the Herald and VB Store notice board for class schedules and details. I am still looking for instructors so if you have an idea that you might think could work please send me a private message and we can talk. The V.B. Club has been very generous and have provided a lovely space. They will not be providing any art supplies for these programs. If you have any questions please contact me at 204 7916624 or email to barbpritchard@shaw.ca Barbara Pritchard

Sailing
June 23, 2017 Continued FROM PAGE 20
Sailing builds character. A sailor knows how to read the wind, the water, and the weather. A sailor must react quickly when faced with challenging circumstances, often without the support of others. A sailor knows their vessel and can make adjustments or repairs with limited resources. A sailor finds that the experience, the respect for nature, and the seamanship they develop offshore can be equally important onshore. The Victoria Beach Yacht Club is proud to offer the opportunity to introduce sailing to people of all ages through the CanSail program – a structured program in which sailors strive to achieve progressively higher levels of skill and certification. Our coaches are Sail Canada and NCCP Certified sailors who grew up at VBYC and have had success at Provincial and National regattas. Youths aged 8-13 sail the Optimist – a small International Class dinghy and one of the worlds most popular boats. Older youths and adults of any age sail the Laser II – a wonderfully designed doubled handed sloop rigged boat that is easy to sail but also a quick, high-performance racer under an able skipper and crew. The coaches teach the basics of equipment, safety, the fundamentals of sailing, and how to read weather and wind. The course is designed to maximize students’ time on the water – learning to handle the boat, adapt to shifting winds and lake conditions, trim the rigging while underway, and eventually to get the most out of the boat and themselves. Most importantly, they will enjoy the outdoors while they make new friends and learn a skill that may eventually become a hobby, a competitive sports activity, or even a way of life. Classes run 4 weeks between July 17 and August 11. Each session is 5 weekdays, 3 hours per day, morning or afternoon. Please visit www.VBYC.ca for more information and to register.

Special Events News
Welcome back to VB - Summer 2017! Lindsay and I are excited to get all the activities and special events underway. Please read the Herald each week or look at the calendar to see what’s planned as we won’t be having a “Special Events News” section each week. Everything is listed in the Calendar for the Special Events and the convenors’ names. We would like to thank the executive, event convenors, Rec staff and numerous other volunteers for all the time and effort that goes into making all of the activities a success. Without volunteers, we wouldn’t have the quality programs we do, so make sure you give them a big Thank-You when you see them. We are looking for raffle convenors for next year. Angela Roehm has put together a binder with contacts and general information. She also mentioned she would be willing to chat to review things, so the transition would be easy. Thanks to Angela, Yvette, Lori and Tracy for working on the raffle the last two years. Please contact Lindsay or myself if you are interested in volunteering for this or any other special or regular event. Have a Safe and enjoyable summer! See you at the beach! ~ Beach People ~ Ab & Betty Hansford are happy to announce the marriage of their granddaughter Kaija Bailey to Ryan Hendry. It was a beautiful day, after a rainy morning. Kaija always wanted to get married at the “beach” where she spent her summers, so, on June 10th, she & Ryan tied the knot on Clubhouse Beach. The reception was held in the Clubhouse. It was a fun evening with their family and friends. We wish them many happy years together.
Happy 50th Anniversary!
On June 23rd, 1967, Joan Isbister married Richard Dawson. Joannie’s family gave them the cottage for two whole weeks for their honeymoon and they’ve barely missed a summer since (except when they lived in Geneva and Buenos Aires). They rented and later bought their own cottage, raising 3 kids and welcoming 6 grandkids. Many books, burgers and slamming screen doors later, this tremendously fun and inspiring couple are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this week with a family reunion. Congratulations to Dick and Joan Dawson! Love from all of us - Jaimie, Ashley, Kae, Perry, Heather, Christopher, Amy, Paige, Brynn, Garrett and John.
