VB FLEA MARKET “Reuse, Renew and Recycle” SATURDAY, July 8th 12:30 pm–2:30 pm at the Victoria Beach Clubhouse Once again, here is a great opportunity to help the Victoria Beach Club by passing on your treasures that are in good condition and are in need of a new home. Last year, with all the Volunteers and the wonderful help of Joanne Gibson, Deb Covernton and Lyndsi da Roza we raised over $3000 for our VB Club. As the new flea market convener this year, I hope that the entire VB community will continue to support this important annual VB Club event. The success of the Flea Market begins with Volunteers who can provide their own trucks to help with the early morning pickup followed by Volunteers for set-up, sorting, pricing and to work at the Flea Market in the afternoon. Thanks to the continuing effort of Al Scurfield, the RM Public Works Team, our VB Rec Assistants, Charity Coordinator Mavis Whicker and last year’s Clean Up Coordinator Lorraine Cook every effort was made to “Reuse, Renew and Recycle” and to avoid sending items to the dump. Sunrise Set Up If you are willing to get up early in the morning, just “Come on Down” to help with pricing, sorting, pick up and set-up beginning at 8:00 am … the earlier, the better, as we are in desperate need of your help. If you have past flea market experience, please identify yourself and your area of expertise – antiques, toys, artwork, linens, electrical, sporting goods, furniture, pricing, etc... Volunteers may arrive anytime after 8:00 am and are free to stay as long as you like. Due to safety concerns, ALL Volunteers between 8:00am – 12:30pm (whether or not accompanied by an adult) MUST be over the age of 12. If you are a Volunteer with a truck, please contact Lyndsi da Roza at 204-756-3633 or lyndsidr@ telus.net before Friday, July 7th to register as you will be assigned a special entrance pass then on Saturday morning bring a partner or a crew and pick up your assigned route sheet. Remember to
bring work gloves if you are joining a truck crew. A very important reminder, please put your donated items in front of your property on Saturday, July 8th between 5:00am - 8:00am. Unfortunately donations put out on Friday evening disappear and don’t make it to the Flea Market. On another note the Flea Market will only accept small electrical appliances that are in good working order and CSA approved. Also, very important if you are donating books please have them in a separate box and labelled for Sunday’s Book Sale. The following items will NOT BE PICKED UP: life jackets, mattresses, sofas, love seats, large appliances, TVs, microwaves, electric fry pans, car seats, bed frames, cribs, toilets, carpets, building supplies, fridges, stoves, washers, dryers, gas BBQs and please … NO clothing or broken items! Formidable Clean Up The Clean-up (2:30pm-5:00pm) is always a challenge after the Flea Market. Aside from the Spence Street Thrift Shop, the other charitable organizations in Winnipeg and the surrounding areas cannot make the trip to pick up items at the end of the day. We therefore need volunteers to help deliver unsold treasures to the important charities. There are several possibilities for volunteers to assist with this. The first and closest drop off is the skate building next to the VB Sports Centre on Hwy 59, which will be open after the flea market until 5:00pm. Special thank you to Lynn Anderson and Yvonne McPherson for their help and collaboration with the Merry Makers who are hosting a rummage sale in the fall. In turn, it would be great if we could help them in the fall at the end of their rummage sale to take items to charities. Also, thank you to Al Scurfield (Public Works) and the RMVB who is providing trucks to help bring items to the skate building that day. CONTINUED ON Page 5
About the Victoria Beach Herald
One of the longest continuously publishing community newspapers in Canada, now in our 92nd year, the Victoria Beach Herald is a service of the Victoria Beach Club. The Herald prints nine issues each summer on Fridays from late June to mid-August. The Herald welcomes submissions from readers focused on family events, beach happenings, community issues, etc. Letters to the Editor are always welcome: they must be signed with the author’s name and be written with the understanding that many people read the Herald, including youngsters. Submissions should be sent via email to vbherald@shaw.ca. Those without access to email can place written submissions in the VB Herald mailbox behind the cash counter at the Victoria Beach General Store. Submission deadline is 4PM Fridays with the exception of VB Club event convenor submissions for events occurring on weekend days. Editor

Victoria Beach - the place where we brag about our no-vehicle policy in the summer and drive like idiots in the spring and fall. Throughout the Saturday of the May Long Weekend, a cloudy but pleasant day with the temperature around 16C, there were routinely 15 to 20 cars and trucks in various stages of arriving, departing and parking outside the bakery and store. Nobody was delivering anything. Nobody with an IV pole was being dropped off. The able-bodied drivers and passengers were doing nothing more than buying coffee and getting their first pecan bun fixes of the season. You know, the kind of thing you instinctively ride your bike or walk to do from late June until Labour Day. You’ll often do this in the middle of a driving rainstorm in July because you need hamburger buns or a dream cookie. CONTINUED ON Page 6

6 June 30, 2017 CONTINUED From Page 5 But outside of those blessed 10 weeks, motorists are increasingly treating our tiny gravel avenues like they’re paved roadways. Just ask anybody on Gibson Drive, Pine Road or 8th Avenue, to name but a few. At one point that Saturday, a large pick-up truck backed up into a bench just outside the bakery where a young boy was munching on a happy face cookie. The boy wasn’t injured and, luckily, the F-150 escaped without a scratch. It’s only a matter of time, however, until a serious accident occurs. As the area around the bakery and store became increasingly congested with cars and trucks, people walking their dogs needed to be on high alert. It was the same with parents whose children wanted a treat after swinging on the swings and running around the play structure.
Victoria Beach HERALD
If you had the audacity to walk or ride your bike down to the Village Green, there was no mistaking that you were in the minority. Cyclists had to be creative after getting off their bikes because the cement wheel stands were often inaccessible because vehicles had been parked on them. The victim could be your son or granddaughter and the perpetrator could be your neighbour or friend. It won’t be you, of course, because you leave your car parked outside your cottage until it’s time to go back to the city. Our police officers have a radar gun, how much could they rack up in fines if they staked out one of these high-traffic areas? More importantly, what kind of a message could they send just by making their presence felt in the restricted area rather than the 70 km/h stretch on the highway? Driving 20 km/h - the speed limit in the restricted area - often requires riding your brakes. It’s abundantly clear that the value of the precious weeks without cars are the only way that this community remains pristine. The area is a resort municipality with no water most of the year and preserving the resort atmosphere involves more than just laws. It involves a commitment from the community to embrace what makes it special and thereby valuable. (How many times have you scoffed at Grand Beach because of the traffic jams there?) Uniqueness is partly the land and the beaches but the bylaws that preserve them can’t be ignored. We believe the time has come for the municipality to institute a parking ban for vehicles in the vicinity of the bakery and store and perhaps other areas, such as the pier, as well. If you insist on driving to get a loaf of white Irish, park your car at the parking lot and walk a couple of hundred meters. It’ll do you good. Children become conditioned to the bike culture during the summer and think nothing of running over to the store or bakery outside of the restricted period. If you think that should fall on the parents, you’re partly right. But sometimes in the craziness of the play area, you can lose track of your child - or the child you’ve been asked to look after - and the last thing you should have to worry about is them getting hit by a car. Walk for Water 2017 - Supporting the Lake Winnipeg Foundation
Since 2008, Victoria Beach has hosted an annual Walk for Water in support of the Lake Winnipeg Foundation. Over the years, lake-lovers have given generously, with last year’s walk raising the most to date. This is amazing, and we hope to raise even more this year! Why are so many supporting this cause? In recent years, there have been many concerning reports on the health of Lake Winnipeg. This can be especially worrying for residents and cottagers, as the lake’s wellbeing directly impacts our community’s beauty, recreation, and prosperity. However, the future of Lake Winnipeg may not be that dire – as long as we continue to support programs focused on improving the health of our lake and its associated ecosystems. The Lake Winnipeg Foundation is leading this pursuit by supporting local research, managing monitoring programs, providing educational material, and advocating for better regulations. Over the next four weeks, The Herald will feature key

achievements of the Lake Winnipeg Foundation this past year. How can you get involved? Those participating in the 2.5 km walk can register at the Victoria Beach Clubhouse, beginning at 9:15 am on Sunday, August 13. The walk will begin at 10:00 am, followed by a prize draw and Freezies. Pledge forms will be available at most Victoria Beach locations, at Saffie’s in Albert Beach, and online at: www. lakewinnipegfoundation.org Participants may also create their own custom fundraising page through CanadaHelps (accessed through the Lake Winnipeg Foundation website). Those unable to participate, can certainly still support the cause by pledging money to a walker, or by making a donation to the Lake Winnipeg Foundation by cheque or on their website. When doing so, please indicate that your donation is being made in conjunction with the Victoria Beach Walk for Water. For more information on the walk, please contact Deanne McDonald (204 756 2911 or deamcd@mymts.net), Sandy McCaig (204 756 8855 or sandymccaig@gmail.com), or the Lake Winnipeg Foundation Events Coordinator, Carolyn Townend (204 956 0436 or events@lakewinnipegfoundation.org).

Book Sale: Sunday, July 9th, 1-3 pm. Book Donations Collected Saturday, July 8th in the Morning The summer is just getting started, but maybe there’s still some spring cleaning to be done at your cottage! We don’t judge! In fact, we welcome with open arms any and all books hanging around from last season or seasons long gone! Make sure to pass on the power of organized words, ideas, and information to your fellow VBers by donating your books to the Victoria Beach Club Book Sale. The sale will be at the Clubhouse on Sunday, July 9th from 1-3 p.m. The profits will go towards the improvement and stocking of the VB Club Library, as well as various other VB Club initiatives. The Flea Market team will be collecting your books that are ready for new hands along with your Flea Market donations. Please make sure to put out the items before 8 a.m. in a secure container like a box or a plastic bag. Remember to be mindful of the weather so that if it’s rainy, you can cover your donations accordingly. We would appreciate a clear separation between Flea Market and Book Sale donations. Last but not least, we’re putting out a call for volunteers! If you have some time to spare on Saturday evening or Sunday morning for set-up or after 3 for clean-up, then come on down to the Clubhouse! New and returning volunteers are welcome. Extra hands make light work! Thank you for supporting the Victoria Beach Library! The Beazley and Edwards families

STEP 2/AREA 2 – Buy a membership, if you haven’t already got one. STEP 3/AREA 3 – Get Signed Up - There will be several lines in this area each ending in an instructor who will assign students to classes. Just pick the shortest line and keep an eye on the master list of classes as spots are filled in. STEP 4/AREA 4 –Payment/Fee Calculation - Pay by cash or cheque (payable to the Victoria Beach Club). - If possible, please use line-up time to complete your cheques. * As usual, we will do our best to have the various areas well labeled, but we rely on our experienced VBers to help anyone looking overwhelmed. Thank you in advance. *Please note that persons in default of payment from last year will not be allowed to register this year until their accounts are cleared by cash payment. *Again, we are asking you to “know” your expected date of departure. Too often we have found that a child will suddenly greet the instructor with “Today is my last day!” Of course the instructor, not having known this, has not prepared a progress report, and is unable to complete one while teaching that day’s lesson. We hope to eliminate this problem by asking for this date in advance. The date is not intended to be binding. You are free to change your mind, though we will still require two or three days’ notice if you decide to leave earlier than your stated date. *If you cannot attend Registration Day, our Swim Staff will be available for swimming registrations and the purchase of VB Club Memberships daily at the Swim Dock from 9:00-11:00 am (at the Clubhouse if it is raining). The above fees apply. The base rate for Red Cross Swim Kids is $25.00 for three weeks or any part thereof. Please ensure that you have your copy of the VB Club membership form, medical insurance numbers and either cash or cheque payment. *Looking forward to seeing you on Swim Registration Day, Sunday, July 2nd from 10am – 12pm @ the Clubhouse. VB Library News
July is finally here and the VB Library is ready to supply you with all the summer reading you will need at the beach. Coming soon is the Book Sale, which will be at the Clubhouse on Sunday, July 9th from 1-3 p.m. We are looking for any and all books to be put out on the side of the street early in the morning on July 8th for pick-up by the Flea Market team. If you have some time to spare on Saturday evening or Sunday morning for set-up or after 3 for clean-up, then we invite you to give us a hand down at the clubhouse. New and exciting things are happening at the library this year! We’ve got children’s story time on Wednesdays, a leadership-based youth book club on Fridays after closing, a sticker and candy contest, and much, much more. Stay tuned for more information on Canada 150 activities, Mindful Mondays, and chances to be featured on our volunteer showcase wall! You can follow us on Instagram @VictoriaBeachLibrary and on Twitter @VB_Library for day to day updates and book recommendations! This is our first gentle reminder that we’re still searching for overdue books from last season, all the way back to 2006. Please take a look around your cottage to see whether you have held onto a library book by accident. Thank you for supporting the Victoria Beach Library! Rachel Beazley and Avery Edwards
Meet your Librarians Rachel Beazley Hi there! My name is Rachel. I just finished my first year in the Faculty of Education at the University of Winnipeg. In 2016, I graduated from St. Mary’s Academy and I credit my love for the written word to high school English class. I especially enjoy reading poetry and creative non-fiction. You can often catch me reading up on the latest news and research to do with mental health too! My favourite book is Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom. When I was younger, Nancy Drew and YA dystopia novels were my go-to summer reads. I hope to meet many new faces this year at the VB Library! Cheers to another summer of reading, relaxing, and having fun at this special place. Avery Edwards Avery Edwards here and I am super excited to be working at the library this summer! To learn a little about me is to say that I have always enjoyed collecting ribbons and participating in all the activities at the VB Club. My favourite activity, besides movie nights, has to be the annual bike race. At the beach, I have also been very active in my free time as a babysitter. When was younger, I even used to volunteer at the library, so I guess you could say I was made for this job. Don’t forget to follow us on Instagram (@victoriabeachlibrary) and Twitter (@VB_Library) and remember that there are lots of fun activities in our kid’s corner - we even have a youth book club. I can’t wait to get started and I look forward to helping everyone, young and “young-at-heart,” find that special summer read. See you at the Library!

Yacht Club News
As Canada Day long weekend is upon us, it finally feels like summer is underway at the Victoria Beach Yacht Club! We are excited for another summer packed with Learn to Sail Programming, Weekend Racing and Social Events. Sailing Lessons & Weekend Racing is open to all that are interested, for dates and contact info please visit our website at www.vbyc.ca. In addition to our ongoing programming and events we are very excited to announce a new drop-in paddling activity. Several club members are initiating an open “meet-up” paddle date for kayakers at VB which is planned to be up and running by mid-July. All are welcome to come down to the club on the weekly date to join in a casual kayak paddle on a summer evening. The group paddle activity will be provided club resources to ensure a safe experience for all. Currently the plan is (to) run the activity on Monday evenings for minimum interference with regular VBYC programs but will be flexible if opportunities emerge. Stay tuned to The Herald and the new VBYC website for details by mid-July. Anyone interested, please contact Greg Thomas at 204-233-0092 or 204-756-2367, or Susan Hall at 204-756-3318 The Victoria Beach Yacht Club is proud to offer the opportunity to introduce sailing to people of all ages through the CanSail program – a structured program in which sailors strive to achieve progressively higher levels of skill and certification. Our coaches are Sail Canada and NCCP Certified sailors who grew up at VBYC and have had success at Provincial and National regattas. Youths aged 8-13 sail the Optimist – a small International Class dinghy and one of the (world’s) most popular boats. Older youths and adults of any age sail the Laser II – a wonderfully designed doubled

handed sloop rigged boat that is easy to sail but also a quick, highperformance racer under an able skipper and crew. The coaches teach the basics of equipment, safety, the fundamentals of sailing, and how to read weather and wind. The course is designed to maximize students’ time on the water – learning to handle the boat, adapt to shifting winds and lake conditions, trim the rigging while underway, and eventually to get the most out of the boat and themselves. Most importantly, they will enjoy the outdoors while they make new friends and learn a skill that may eventually become a hobby, a competitive sports activity, or even a way of life. Classes run 4 weeks between July 17 and August 11. Each session is 5 weekdays, 3 hours per day, morning or afternoon. For more information or to register please visit www.VBYC.ca or come down to the Victoria Beach Club House on Sunday July 2 from 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM to visit our booth at “Swimming Registration” day and check out a rigged Optimist Sailing Boat. Weekend racing will continue at VBYC where we boast the largest catamaran fleet in the prairies. Come down to the club early to check it out or maybe even get on a boat. Memberships are available to those interested in racing, recreational sailing, boat storage, and enjoying the best deck at VB. Visit www.VBYC.ca or email info@vbyc.ca for more information and for the schedule of events, including the legendary Aug.6 Yacht Club Dance. (Also on the website is a wonderful feature: ‘Windfinder‘ 7-day Forecast provides information on Lake Winnipeg’s wind direction and speed, cloud cover/precipitation and air temperature for the upcoming week, an amazing tool for anyone heading out on the water or planning a trip to Elk Island.) we would also like to thank Jeff, Heather & James at Alter Ego Sports for their kind donation. This program will return this year for the month of July. Sadly, we are still seeing many Children riding their Bikes at Victoria Beach and NOT wearing their Helmets. During the summer, we had a few cyclists not wearing their Helmets crash and get injured. Crashes can happen anytime! There were a wide range of injuries that occurred as a result, including one Woman who suffered a skull fracture and hospitalization after knocking herself unconscious. Helmet wearing has been law for two years now. The only other option to gain compliance is enforcement! The fine is $63.10. Don’t get caught by the Police NOT wearing your Helmet! Some of the Special Events offered are: Sports Day, Beach Events, the Sandcastle Building Contest, the Cross-Country Run, the Masquerade, the Dog Show, as well as open swims, and tournaments for tennis, soccer and volleyball. The Club is also responsible for the publication of the Herald, the maintenance of the swimming dock, the clubhouse and the tennis courts, as well as the salaries of the Recreation Director, the Recreation and Tennis Court Assistants, the Librarians and certified Swimming Instructors. A major source of revenue to provide these programs and events is the sale of memberships, and so to participate in the above programs and activities, a membership or day-pass is required. We need your support to continue the traditions that have made Victoria Beach a summer home to many. In addition to buying your membership, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to the Club (a tax-receipt will be provided for donations of $20 or more). Memberships are $50 per family. A single Family is defined as parent(s) and their dependent children. Memberships are non-transferable to other relatives, friends or renters. If additional memberships are needed after the Membership Drive, they can be purchased at the V.B. Info Booth (at the Gate), at the Library or at the Tennis Courts during their regular hours. The family membership is valid for the entire summer. Several memberships can be sold at the same cottage – one for each family at the cottage. Memberships can be purchased CONTINUED ON Page 26

Council Corner HAPPY CANADA DAY!
A reminder - Brush and leaf pick up are over. Most of you got your brush and leaves out on time, but if you were late, please tidy up your debris and store it on your own property until the autumn pick up begins September 5. Recycling - Our public works staff are now in charge of taking our recycling to the plant in Lac du Bonnet. Would you please reduce the number of trips by FLATTENING YOUR BOXES. We don’t have the manpower to do that task. It only takes a few minutes to do the job, but multiply that by 100 and the task is enormous. Taxes - Taxes are due July 31. You can pay your taxes on line from all major banks. This year you can also pay your taxes by cheque at the Information Office. Please give it to the attendant. Cheques will be accepted until July 28. Two mobility scooters will be available this summer. Rates will be posted at a later date. Fire - Please be extra cautious with your fire pits. You must have a valid permit (available from the firehall). No fires are permitted on the beach. Private fireworks are forbidden. Have a wonderful celebration. Reeve and Council

VB Doctors Clinic
As most of you know, our “community clinic manager” was Kathy Brydon until her untimely passing on May 27, 2017. To say we will miss her leadership is an understatement! In 2014, when Council agreed to re - establish the doctor’s office, Kathy was asked if she would chair a community committee to accomplish that job. She readily accepted. She took on the huge task of setting up the office, recruiting doctors, and making sure the medications were on hand. Her husband John took on the “paperwork” tasks for the office. He has been active, even in the last few weeks, helping us compile what is needed for 2017. We know many of you knew Kathy, our tiny but mighty VBer, and are felling shocked and sad at her passing. There is to be a Celebration of her life at some point this summer. Dr. Carry Martens-Barnes has taken the lead, over many years, aiding our community in maintaining a summer doctor. VB owes her a great thank you for all she has done and is doing for us. If you get the opportunity, please thank the doctors when you meet them. June 11, seventeen wonderful workers showed up to clean the doctor’s cottage. Many helpers make a big task a small one! We would like to thank Terry Angus, Jennifer Engbrecht, Chris and Tamie Archer, Brian and Nancy Hodgson, Kathy McKibbin, Linda McMillan, Richard Jones, Clarice Matthews, Marg Richardson, Sheila and Kathy Grover, and all four Masons, Mike, Trish, Alexandra and Abi! Job well done!!
