Celebration of Life for Kathy Brydon

Please join us Saturday, July 29th at 2pm at the Senior’s Scene as we remember Mom and celebrate her life. We welcome any stories that you would like to share with us for her memory book; feel free to bring a printed copy with you or send it via email to victoria_beach@yahoo.com John, Heather and Lynne A lively group of VB and area residents escaped to Malaga in February this past winter. We had an awesome time visiting and experiencing the coastal and mountain villages. The beaches were beautiful, but they didn’t hold a candle to ours at VB. We embraced the Spanish passion for Paella and fresh seafood. We developed friendships at happy hour while we shared our experiences of the day.

Thank you to Diane and Dave Holmstrom, Pat and Bernie McMullan, Mary McIntosh and Bill Forbes, Linda McMillan Gary and Nancy Danwich, Susan Thomas , Cheryl and Clifton Trainor, Janice Tomlin, Carol Polonski, Mary Chalmers, and Judy McLean. The fiesta you threw for my special birthday was amazing. MUI Bueno and muchos gracias, Amigos. Tammy MacIntosh June 17, 2017 was a special day for the Cheate r- G o o d h a n d - O s t e rSchmied families, some of whom have enjoyed Victoria Beach for three generations. About 80 guests — from Berlin and Detroit to Ottawa and Victoria — gathered at Clubhouse Beach for the marriage of MacKenzie Cheater to Liv Oster. The Winnipeg boy and the girl from Hamburg met picking fruit in New Zealand, and eight years later chose the VB Clubhouse for their reception. Best man Nik Friesen-Hughes delivered a brilliant toast to the groom; emcees Dan and Patrick Cheater kept things moving with grace and wit; and maid of honour Caroline Kassin delivered a show stopping toast to the bride that involved impromptu Thriller-dancing zombies and confetti guns. Margo and Glenn would like to thank all the VBers who helped make this happen, lending us everything from fridges and freezers and Xmas lights to their beautiful cottages. It was a grand party with family and friends; relaxed and fun and unforgettable. Margo Goodhand

Victoria Beach Club

BOARD

PAST PRESIDENT Anil Kaul PRESIDENT Suzy Cramp 756-3016 VICE PRESIDENT Mike Clement (204) 894-3142 SECRETARY Wendy Derksen 756-6515

A hectic first week of summer is behind us and we’re just getting started! Shout out to all club volunteers, especially convenors with the flurry of events this past week including VB Membership Blitz (Monica White, Darcie Reimer, Jen Campbell), Canada 150 fireworks display (Rob Hester), Swim Registration (Tamara Roehr & Alice Russell), Tennis Manitoba Day (Tennis Manitoba Staff), Girl’s Tennis Day (Robert Kennedy & Nancy Sarchuk), and the Rogers Rookie Tournament (Tennis Manitoba Staff, VB Tennis Staff, & Robert Kennedy). Thanks also to Rec Director Bruce Sirrell and his great crop of rec staff for this week’s activities…it’s going to be another great summer! In the season’s first Herald, our club President,

Suzy Cramp outlined numerous updates about this summer’s activities that are worth noting. If you didn’t get a copy of the last two Heralds, an electronic copy can be found on the club website at www.victoriabeachclub.com. Please also note that the club’s Facebook page is a great place for club updates (simply search Victoria Beach Club in Facebook). I’m now into my second year on the VB Club council and remain extremely impressed at the passion that everyone involved puts into this club to create a positive and social environment every summer. It’s all worth it when we see beaming kids at Family Games and when we see “grown ups” wiping out in the Potato Sack Race! Get outside and get active folks. If you’re inside, you’re losing! About the Victoria Beach Herald

One of the longest continuously publishing community newspapers in Canada, now in our 92nd year, the Victoria Beach Herald is a service of the Victoria Beach Club. The Herald prints nine issues each summer on Fridays from late June to mid-August. The Herald welcomes submissions from readers focused on family events, beach happenings, community issues, etc. Letters to the Editor are always welcome: they must be signed with the author’s name and be written with the understanding that many people read the Herald, including youngsters. Submissions should be sent via email to vbherald@shaw.ca. Those without access to email can place written submissions in the VB Herald mailbox behind the cash counter at the Victoria Beach General Store. Submission deadline is 4PM Fridays with the exception of VB Club event convenor submissions for events occurring on weekend days. Editor

VB FLEA MARKET

5

“Reuse, Renew and Recycle”

SATURDAY, July 8th • 12:30 pm–2:30 pm at the Victoria Beach Clubhouse

Once again, here is a great opportunity to help the Victoria Beach Club by passing on your treasures that are in good condition and are in need of a new home. Last year, with all the Volunteers and the wonderful help of Joanne Gibson, Deb Covernton and Lyndsi da Roza we raised over $3,000 for our VB Club. As the new flea market convener this year, I hope that the entire VB community will continue to support this important annual VB Club event. The success of the Flea Market begins with Volunteers who can provide their own trucks to help with the early morning pick-up followed by Volunteers for set-up, sorting, pricing and to work at the Flea Market in the afternoon. Thanks to the continuing effort of Al Scurfield, the RM Public Works Team, our VB Rec Assistants, Charity Coordinator Mavis Whicker and last year’s Clean Up Coordinator Lorraine Cook every effort was made to “Reuse, Renew and Recycle” and to avoid sending items to the dump.

Sunrise Set Up

If you are willing to get up early in the morning, just “Come on Down” to help with pricing, sorting, pick up and set-up beginning at 8:00 am … the earlier, the better, as we are in desperate need of your help. If you have past flea market experience, please identify yourself and your area of expertise – antiques, toys, artwork, linens, electrical, sporting goods, furniture, pricing, etc... Volunteers may arrive anytime after 8:00 am and are free to stay as long as you like. Due to safety concerns, ALL Volunteers between 8:00am – 12:30pm (whether or not accompanied by an adult) MUST be over the age of 12. If you are a Volunteer with a truck, please contact Lyndsi da Roza at 204-756-3633 or lyndsidr@telus.net before Friday, July 7th to register as you will be assigned a special entrance pass then on Saturday morning bring a partner or a crew and pick up your assigned route sheet. Remember to bring work gloves if you are joining a truck crew.

A very important reminder, please put your donated items in front of your property on Saturday, July 8th between 5:00am 8:00am. Unfortunately donations put out on Friday evening disappear and don’t make it to the Flea Market. On another note the Flea Market will only accept small electrical appliances that are in good working order and CSA approved. Also, very important if you are donating books please have them in a separate box and labelled for Sunday’s Book Sale. The following items will NOT BE PICKED UP: life jackets, mattresses, sofas, love seats, large appliances, TVs, microwaves, electric fry pans, car seats, bed frames, cribs, toilets, carpets, building supplies, fridges, stoves, washers, dryers, gas BBQs and please … NO clothing or broken items!

Formidable Clean Up

The Clean-up (2:30pm-5:00pm) is always a challenge after the Flea Market. Aside from the Spence Street Thrift Shop, the other charitable organizations in Winnipeg and the surrounding areas cannot make the trip to pick up items at the end of the day. We therefore need volunteers to help deliver unsold treasures to the important charities. There are several possibilities for volunteers to assist with this. The first and closest drop off is the skate building next to the VB Sports Centre on Hwy 59, which will be open after the flea market until 5:00pm. Special thank you to Lynn Anderson and Yvonne McPherson for their help and collaboration with the Merry Makers who are hosting a rummage sale in the fall. In turn, it would be great if we could help them in the fall at the end of their rummage sale to take items to charities. Also, thank you to Al Scurfield (Public Works) and the RMVB who is providing trucks to help bring items to the skate building that day. CONTINUED ON PAGE 6

Please bring a yoga mat and water bottle, as well as either your green yoga wristband or an orange day-pass. Although the classes are geared towards adults, older teenagers can attend as well. I have really enjoyed convening the yoga program and meeting so many other yoga enthusiasts. As this will be my last summer as Yoga Convenor, I am hoping to meet a person or two who could organize/teach a yoga program for 2018, so that our beach community can continue this wonderful practice together. If you are interested, please approach me at yoga or contact the Special Events Coordinators. Namaste, Pamela Beazley (Yoga Convenor)

Yacht Club Update VBYC’s Sailing School program starts July 17th and runs for 4 consecutive weeks. There are still spots open so please visit www. vbyc.ca to register before it’s too late! Our Advanced Optimist classes are filling up quickly as previous participants graduate to the next level of sailing. Let’s get the new generation of sailors involved and introduce kids to sailing in our beginner classes. It’s a safe and fun environment for kids aged 7 and up. They’ll learn a lot

about the sport, the wind, and the lake and they’ll have a blast doing it. Classes for teens and adults are also available so grab a friend or sign up solo and meet new ones. Many great friendships began in sailing lessons over the years. We are pleased to confirm that the regularly scheduled racing program will continue this year. VBYC hosts the largest catamaran fleet on the prairies. We’d love to get enough monohulls (Lasers etc.) out to run races as well. Skipper’s meetings are at 10am on weekends with racing starting approximately half an hour later. Come down to the yacht club for 10 to participate or maybe get on a boat as crew. Or watch the action from the pier! It’s a VB tradition. Got a kayak? The club is supporting an initiative for a weekly meet-up group paddle. Stay tuned to the Herald or our website for updates or contact Greg Thomas (756-2367) or Susan Hall (7563318). Mark your calendars – the legendary Yacht Club Dance goes down August 6 at the VB Sport Club. The Yacht Club is pleased to have welcomed a good deal of new members over the last couple of years as VBer’s continue to embrace water sports at the lake. Come see what all the excitement is about!

Duplicate Bridge

Welcome Back Duplicate Bridge Evening – Monday, July 10 at 6 PM We are having a welcome back duplicate bridge evening on Monday July 10th starting at 6PM. Please bring an appetizer to share and a beverage (alcohol is allowed) of your choice. We did this at the “wind - up” of last season and it was such a success that we thought that we’d do it again to start this new season of duplicate bridge. On June 26th, we had 16 enthusiastic bridge players out for bridge on a beautiful June evening. Congratulations to Donna

Thain and Patty Johnston (1st) and Sheila Ruban and Ken Capelle (2nd). Duplicate bridge would not be possible without the support of the Victoria Beach Club, so please return the favour by buying a Victoria Beach membership. Please come to duplicate bridge with a partner or if you need one call Ken at 756-3612. The cost for duplicate bridge remains at $1.00 per person - best deal at Victoria Beach! Cans of soda and bottled water are available for just $1.00. See you at bridge.

Meet your Swim Instructors for 2017

Tess Hi, I’m Tess, and I’m back for another great year of swimming! I just graduated from Oak Park High School and next year I will be attending the University of Manitoba. I’m entering the Faculty of Science and I’m also going to be running track and field for the Bisons. I’m super excited to spend summer at Victo-

Cameron The legend returns for round four! I’m Cameron, one of the veterans of the VB swim staff. I’ve just finished my second year at the University of Winnipeg, majoring in physics. In the city, I’ve been teaching swimming lessons for Benchmark Swimming Academy. Some of my hob-

ria Beach, pier jumping, eating dream cookies, hanging out with my friends, and making memories. If you see me out and about VB, don’t be afraid to come and say hi! I can hardly wait to meet all of my new and returning swim students, and to do my best to improve everyone’s swimming ability. I hope I can teach my swimmers to conquer their own level 5 (which was, personally, my most challenging level). I hope to see everyone at the swim dock!

bies are swimming, ultimate frisbee, and tennis. During my youth, I went through the entire VB swim program, learning to swim in the cold, wavy, tormenting water. Although it was challenging, the experience moulded me into the tough, persevering man I am today. As head swimming instructor, my goal is to do as good a job as my predecessors did over past summers. I’m looking forward to seeing all the old and new faces and working with the rest of the staff this summer!

Sasha Hi, my name is Alexandra (Sasha) Shewchuk-Taylor. I just graduated high school and I am attending the U of W next year in the faculty of arts. I love to play soccer and spend time out at the lake with family and friends. I have been coming out to Victoria Beach ever since i was 7. I spend the majority of my summer at the cottage relaxing and spending time with

Lake Winnipeg Foundation: Paving a Way Forward with Community-Based Monitoring

This is the first of a four-part series highlighting initiatives of the Lake Winnipeg Foundation aimed at understanding and improving the health of our lake. Over the last decade, residents and cottagers at Victoria Beach have experienced more frequent and larger algal blooms, affecting the water quality and recreational use of our lake. These blooms are the result of increased phosphorus concentrations. Phosphorus is a nutrient found in fertilizers and manure. More phosphorus present in a water body means that there are more nutrients available for biological activity, causing increased algae growth. To mitigate this water quality issue, it is necessary to understand which waterways contribute the most phosphorus to Lake Winnipeg. In 2016, the Lake Winnipeg Foundation started a communitybased monitoring project to investigate phosphorus concentrations in streams and rivers flowing into Lake Winnipeg. Volunteers from two Manitoba conservation districts (Seine / Rat River and La Salle / Redboine) collected a total of 200 water samples from 12 sites. The water sampling follows the same standards as federal or provincial government monitoring programs. The water samples collected in 2016 demonstrated areas in the province with higher phosphorus contributions than previously reported – ultimately showing that phosphorus ‘hotspots’ are present in Manitoba’s waterways. By identifying hotspots, the Lake Winnipeg Foundation can direct resources towards water quality improvements in those areas. The results also illustrated the importance of sampling after snowmelt and severe storms to identify

areas where phosphorus enters the waterways. The Lake Winnipeg Foundation’s community-based monitoring network continues to grow thanks to the success of the pilot project. The network now involves 70 sampling sites throughout Manitoba, and volunteers will collect over 1,000 samples this summer (5x more than last year!). The Lake Winnipeg Foundation will continue supporting this program in order to accumulate a significant body of data – the more data, the greater potential for insight on what is happening in the watershed. Ultimately, the Lake Winnipeg Foundation hopes that this data will inform policy, and help with both designing and assessing the performance of remediation efforts to mitigate phosphorus hotspots. You can support the Lake Winnipeg Foundation by participating in the Victoria Beach and District Walk for Water on Sunday, August 13th. (Registration: VB Clubhouse at 9:15am; Walk: 2.5km starting at 10am.) You can support this event by (a) collecting pledges and walking, (b) pledging money to a walker, or (c) donating to the LWF by cheque or online at www.lakewinnipegfoundation.org (Please mention that your donation is being made in conjunction with VB’s Walk for Water.) Pledge forms are available at most Victoria Beach locations, Saffie’s in Albert Beach, and on the Lake Winnipeg Foundation website. For more information on the Walk, please contact Deanne McDonald (204 756 2911 or deamcd@mymts.net), Sandy McCaig (204 756 8855 or sandymccaig@ gmail.com), or Carolyn Townend, the Lake Winnipeg Foundation Events Coordinator (204 956 0436 or events@lakewinnipegfoundation.org).

Victoria Beach HERALD

Letter to the Editor

Sometime between June 12 and June 30 this art work was stolen from 203 Sunset Blvd. The value to us is sentimental and priceless. They have been a part of our cottage since it was built in the 1920s. If you have any information on the whereabouts of these pieces please contact 204-756-8394 or email nictorrie1@shaw.ca. Sincerely Anderson Family Cottage.
