STATE OF MINDS ISSUES THE INITIAL CALL FOR HIP-HOP SITE ANALYSIS: STATE OF MINDS ASKS "WHAT IS HIP-HOP?"

STAFF Publisher: Scorpion Media of TX Editor In Chief: Scotty Ward Managing Editor: J.P. Oates Advising Editor: Chuck Jones Web Coordinator: Chuck Jones

Though the question "What is Hip-Hop?" sparks all kinds of debate, a new website called State of Minds is using it as the initial call to bring people together to participate in what the About page describes as a "Hip-Hop community driven social content website". To be honest, when I first heard that Leo Libiran was trying to start a hip hop related social networking site, I had a dubious response because I simply imagined a MySpace clone focused on hip hop. So I was happily surprised to find that his first public effort is both unique and interesting.

Contributing Writers: Lex Flores, Lisa Suarez, Chuck Jones, J.P. Oates,

As you'll see, the site currently focuses on postcards created in response to the question

"What is Hip-Hop?" that can either literally be snail mail postcards or .jpg images that are entirely digital. The responses are interesting because they don't all literally address the question but they all do address various meaningful aspects of hip hop.

dia saturated environment, even fairly simple ideas can be quickly misread and dismissed. On the positive side, that might weed out some of the silliness one encounters in many rap related discussion boards and comment areas.

Though my own tendency in a new project is to maintain fairly tight boundaries and loosen them later, I'm happy to see that State of Minds is taking a more open approach to responses, since a site relying on community created content should ultimately draw much of its direction from the community it facilitates.

For me, such concerns raise marketing issues related to reaching receptive sectors of the larger hip hop community via online media.

My concern is that people initially visiting State of Minds will be thrown by the use of the term postcards, especially since, in a me-

Many hip hop sites are working within fairly restricted boundaries and aren't going to boost a site they view as competition, though the uniqueness of the site might get past such barriers leading to some kind of coverage and there are many sites concerned with defining hip hop, whether or not they forefront the question.

D.M.C. “CAMPS OUT” FOR THE KIDS u RUN-D.M.C. GROUP MEMBER DARRYL "D.M.C." MCDANIELS HAS ANNOUNCED THE FORMATION OF CAMP FELIX, A SUMMER CAMP FOR CHILDREN WITHOUT PARENTS. Founded through D.M.C.'s The Felix Organization, Camp Felix has a mission of sending 150 children to summer camp with hopes of giving them a life changing experience. "There are many children growing up without parents, in the foster care system or with parents who aren't really equipped," D.M.C told AllHipHop.com in a statement. "These children do not have the opportunities we had, or parental hands to guide and support them as we did. We want to give them what so many of us are lucky enough to take for granted, new opportunities. New adventures." D.M.C. has partnered up with The New York Foundling to gain access to a 350-acre existing camp located in Putnam Valley, New York for 3 weeks in August. The 136-year-old Foundling is a nationally recognized as a leader in providing services

to children without parents. In January 2006, DMC was the subject of a VH1 "Rock Doc" titled My Adoption Journey, that focused on the pioneering rapper's recent, shocking discovery that he was adopted. The program also followed D.M.C. as he revealed his new perspective on life while discovering his birthroots. Donations to support The Felix Organization can be sent to: 43 Oyster Bay Road, Locust Valley NY, 11560.

KELLY'S NOT WITH CHILD Y'ALL!

From AllHipHop.com’s ‘Rumors’section

r b a n r u m o r s

For some reason, people want Kelly to have a baby. The rumor is so heavy that the singer has released a statement to address the stuff. Her label said, "...statements attributed to Kelly regarding her alleged pregnancy were never made by the artist and a purported interview with the AMG never took place." This AMG is some site that I told you had no credibility to begin with.

DMX VS. THE POLICE!

t h i s j u s t i n

We heard DMX got a new ticket on the street yesterday. We heard he was so furious, because he got a ticket and the cops were harassing him again. DMX said that after he was knocked he continued to do a "buck 30 (130 mph)" after the police pulled him over. That's a real rebel! "I'm nice behind the wheel! How many people you know can do 140 in a Suburban? I gets my whip on! I tried out for Nascar," DMX told Hot 97's DJ Green Lantern later in the evening.

LOCAL PAINTER, DORA OREJEL SHOWS HER ‘LOVE’ COLLECTION IN AUGUST SA Urban is proud to announce that one of San Antonio’s local painters, Dora Orejel, will be showcasing her latest collection, “Love”, througout the month of August at Tito’s Restaurant on South Alamo Street. Make sure you support our local artists to the fullest and make an effort to see the passion in her work. DORA OREJEL A little about me... Name: Dora Orejel Age: 30 Hometown: Ulysses, Kansas but grew up in Andrews, West Texas. Schooling: 2 years at Texas Tech University and currently a student of Love.

I started painting approximately a year and a half ago and my inspirations are those of Love and Heartache (same difference) My goal is to show people that no matter what a person goes through--Love, Heartache, Broken promises--We will always go back to what our instincts are, which is knowing how to love someone unconditionally right after you have learned to love yourself the same way. I believe that we are all students of love, wondering when and where, if and how many mistakes we have all made or are about to make in our lives. But it is that longing for a complete connection with someone who sees no faults in us (and if he or she does, only embraces with admiration that you’re not afraid to make the mistakes in front of them).

SPORTS A DREAM COME TRUE

BY: Lex Flores, SA Urban Sports writer

It was a deal that would have wiped all the other deals off the back page, the front page and all the pages in between. It might have been a deal that would have changed history and pennant races. It was a deal that didn't happen this weekend, but apparently could have and maybe it should have been. It was a deal that no expected involving the only active 343-game winner currently active. The owner easily could have done for Clemens what the Cubs did Monday for Greg Maddux. There are times when certain people deserve to be rescued from their losing season. This year, for those two living legends, was one of those times. The Cubs couldn't be sure if this was Maddux's final season. But if it is, he doesn't deserve to finish it with a team that's trying to hold off the Pirates in the NL Central dungeon and Clements with no run support. It would be ashamed to see these two icons’ not see them for the race for the pennant. In this version, the Red Sox weren't told the Astros didn't intend to trade Clemens. Instead, the two sides exchanged ideas, scenarios and even lists of potential players who could have been sent to Houston in exchange for Clemens. The Astros putting up there best

and consisted pitcher Roy Oswalt. It is so obvious this team is missing something huge and vital that it advertised its flaws to the world this weekend by chasing names as powerful as Tejada and Soriano but why give up your best picture. Let’s give up Clemens so that the Astors organization can free up salary cap to get players like Tejada and Soriano. Oh but wait didn’t we already had a player like that, name “Carlos Beltran”? That was the worst mistake that the Astros did. Yet the owner maintains his boundless optimism. He sees what he wants to see. He believes what he wants to believe. And he believes, mostly, that as long as he has Roger Clemens in his clubhouse, they will never run out of miracles. Comments: The reason why Clements doesn’t get any run support or why the bull pen blows a lead for him. My theory is because he held out half the season and received $22 million to play the other half of the season. How much was Beltran asking for? It couldn’t have been that much more to keep a young All-Star that generated most of the Astros offense. Why is it that Oswalt win games and the team has an average score of 5-10 runs. I think the players are trying to send a message don’t you think? Don’t get me wrong I like Clements but all the evidence is there that the team doesn’t have his support.

MISTAKES WOMEN MAKE IN BED

THE FIVE BIGGEST MISTAKES WOMEN MAKE ABOUT LOVE: PART 3 OF 5 (part 4 next week)

dictable. And if we're bored, it's hard for us to orgasm because we need a lot more mental and physical stimulation than he does to topple us over the edge.

Hot - or hopeless? Find out how you rate as a lover and pray you're not guilty of any of these...

I admit, it's not the healthiest of attitudes but it is understandable. Most people wouldn't dream of sitting down to the same meal every single night of their life yet most couples follow the same routine every single time they have sex. Vary just one thing every time you have sex. It might be a different position. A new room. The lights on or off. You might be dressed, half-dressed or completely naked. Music on, music off. It's easy! It takes little imagination but works wonders.

by sex expert Tracey Cox

What makes a woman great in bed? Who better to answer that question than the guy she's in bed with. After extensive interviews with men from all backgrounds, professions and relationships, these constantly surface as the top five female sexual sins. Even if you can twist yourself into 56 positions and quote from the Kama Sutra, you're never going to win Lover of his Life if you're guilty of any of these nono's. 3. We only seem to like sex at the beginning. Once the relationship is serious, we lose interest. 'It's been the same with every girlfriend I've ever had. They're all over you in the beginning but stop wanting it at all once you've been together for a while.' Some guys think it means we're just not interested in sex at all. We fake it in the beginning until we've 'got him', then drop the act. I think there's a far less sinister and more logical reason to explain it. Women get bored with sex if it becomes pre-

50 CENT’S HITMAN TALK UNDERMINES “RAP CAPITALIST” IMAGE By Pro HipHop News

I've long been interested in 50 Cent the businessman but I remain baffled as to why he continues to refer to his ability to hire hit men in interviews for major publications, in this case, while discussing Supreme: Either way, he’s a wrap now, because the changes they don’t see is the financial transition. Same way the nigga that shot me wasn’t an in-house for them—he was just a shooter. I have access to that now. I have the finances. The shooters shoot as soon as

the bag is dropped. So now, either they give him life, or they let him go and I give him life. They don’t understand the difference. The first album I was trying to explain it, Power of the Dollar. They had money when I didn’t have money, so I had to take bullets.

This is the second time I've read an article in which he makes such a statement [unfortunately I don't have the other reference handy but I think it was in a VIBE cover story in '05]. Considering that I don't really read that many 50 Cent interviews, that seems like a rather glaring error on his part,

especially since he disses various opponents for talking about criminal activity in public. At the very least, it could help establish premeditation if he ever ended up in court on related charges.

Whether he considers such statements a necessary effort to sew fear in the hearts and minds of his opponents or whether he's just too angry to think straight when the topic of Supreme arises, I have no idea, but it just doesn't align well with his now well cultivated image of a legitimate "rap capitalist".

sa urban gaming review: round 3 “Round 3” is Undisputed By Malik Abdullah

Introduction OK, boxers EA’s “Fight Night” series, which has been knocking out the competition since the series began, is back to defend its title with its third installment “Round 3.” It should come as no surprise that it’s the most realistic boxing simulation seen to date. Gameplay Just like its predecessors, “Round 3” features an analog punch system that will take a lot of sparing to perfect. But if you can figure it out you’ll be able to deliver lightning fast combos that will turn your opponents into bobble heads. Now if this is too hard, you always have the trusty button punch configuration that sometimes can be just as deadly. There’s also the new Impact Punch feature that WILL leave you on the canvas if you’re not careful. Unfortunately, button mashers don’t have access, as you can only pull off this high-risk, high-reward move with the analog stick. Still, if you are able to parry an impact punch you will have a chance to deliver a devastating combo in return. local r eview:byrd s eason 15.5 Entertainment Byrd Season

Rating:

out of 5 stars

Review by DJ HEARDITB4 I’m b-b-back, so get on your P’s and Q’s and let me tell you this; BYRD SEASON is super hot but I’m about to get on them. First things first, you are really swimming in very dangerous waters. You boys are really giving the copyright laws a run for its money putting uncut, unedited, non-altered commercial songs on a C.D. and selling it for profit. It’s not good, to put it plain and simple. What the problem is; local Rap groups don’t think that the industry is looking at Da Tone, but let me tell you they are because the next thing out of Texas will be from Da Tone, so be careful. I don’t know why 15.5 is doing the mix tape s**t anyway because their original s**t is super hot. I mean #2, #5, an #19 are off the mother**** chain. I was riding to it and I had to listen to each one of those tracks at least 3 times. Your production was super tight, the mix down and mastering was very good. Shouts out to your production team. I hope you guys paid them what they are worth. I really like the way you guys give shouts-out on track 2 (FLOW) to all schools. That’s what it takes to build a fan base. You show love, you get love. Tracks 5 (DAT BOY CHEVY)and 19 (YA ON FIRE) are just sizzling but you just have to get way from that mix tape thang when you got hot s**t like this. Don’t be scared to let your own music stand on its own; you can do it. Trust! You put me in a funny position were I have to rate it like this but I want do it again!!!!!! Next time It won’t even make the paper, don’t be scared, leave that mix-tape stuff to the d.j.’s, especially when its’ hot. Make your own music. Put it like this you would’ve been rated 4.5 out of 5 if it was all original.
