the sa-ttown urban street pulse PALOMA METAL WINS EISENHOWER MIDDLE SCHOOL FUTURE ARTIST AWARD by Sherril, contributing writer

THE BOSS BAR...

“The Little Bar That Could.” by Chuck Jones

Once reprimanded for her compulsive drawing habit, Paloma Metal now wins the Future Artist Award presented to her by Eisenhower Middle School. It was just two years ago that Paloma's compulsive drawing habit had her grades plumitting. Now, she is all A's and a couple B's and her parents couldn't be prouder! At just 12 years of age Paloma has filled up dozens of sketch books with her anime influenced art. When asked who her favorite artist is, Jhonen Vasquez of Invader Zim fame is the name that flies out of her mouth! "It's all about Zim" she says. Paloma and Vasquez have somthing in common, they are both native Californian's. Paloma's art has caught the eye of someone else as well, Nick Jones (Hip Hop artist with the M7 Movement and Co-founder of Graffitti Radio). Graffitti Radio puts out a monthly E-Zine called "The Stash Box" and Jones has asked Paloma to contribute monthly cartoons for their Zine. "This is going to be scary but fun because I draw for myself, my friends and school projects, but have never drawn for a E-zine where I know there will be real deadlines and stuff."

For some time now, since first hearing about the Boss Bar (located in an offthe-beaten-path location off Fredericksburg Rd.), the SA Urban staff has been waiting for the hip-hop club curse to rear its ugly head and cause problems for the little bar that could. We have been there for a couple of bar brawls and miscellaneous mishaps but for some reason this little bar endures. In no way am I eluding that this is a bad thing, in fact I am pretty glad to see it! Since I have heard about it, this bar has been a beacon for local rap artists to come out and strut their stuff and I have to give kudos for the way they support our local talent. Good Job Boss Bar! Keep supporting our culture!

THIS SUBJECT IS ONE OF ‘DEATH’

MEMORIES

Before I turned the age of 18 I had alot of my closest friends die. I mean we experienced much together. Some of the most memberable times of being just young and free were with those people. Some were innocent accidents and some were very tragic but regardless of how they died..in an instant, they were gone. I never realized what they meant when they said you could be here one day and be gone the next. It's 8am in the morning and I still haven’t gone to sleep. It's strange because what had me thinking about this was that my next door neighbor died. He was a nice man but honestly I hadn’tt known him well. It was just a little crazy because I had seen him the day before and he usally comes by to just kick it with my sisters and I; but not this time. That night his sister and mine found out they declared his death. Do I feel sad that I never got to say things I needed to say? Or Do the things that I should've done for him to help improve his life?

truly care for? Our dearest family and friends? Do we remember to tell them that we are there and that we could help them live a better life if they wanted? That we do love them. It really doesn’t seem to hit us untill that person is gone. I think thats gotta be the saddest part of it all. The fact that everyday we walk around taking life for granted. Not appreciating the beauty that lies in just saying ‘I love you’ to the people who also helped you in your life. Think about what that could do for them after having a bad day, or an overall bad year. Sometimes we as humans need to hear it, but being Gods children we need to live his love everyday. So I would like to say that even though I don't say it very often ..at all atcually. “I love you.” I love the you who has never let me down no matter what choice I made; the you that when I raged against you, you still worked over time to save me from big mistakes. I love your dedicaton to me; I love you over and over again. In memory of all the ones we love in life and death. Dedicated to my neighbor who helped me even after his death to understand again why I love.

Written by Cruz Gatica

I believe that everyone does things in their life that they would'nt be proud of after death...but God still forgives them. I can't say that I paid that much attention to his personal life either, because I focus too much on mine; which everyone seems to do. The whole “out of sight, out of mind” thing, but what about those who we truly,

IT’S JUST NOT THAT SERIOUS PEOPLE! LOCAL R&B GROUP ‘SWOLE’ OVER RUMORS OF TEENAGE PREGNANCY by SA Urban News Contributor

A rumor has recently come to the attention of the SA Urban News staff concerning a local R&B group and the rumored presence of a written letter accusing one of the members of impregnating a teenage girl. Now, usually a story so shrouded in hearsay and unverified information would never make black and white with SA Urban because we are not a ‘rumor mill’ paper and will never be as long as the powers that be are in charge but the way the story was told to our staff, we just had to give a little ‘maturity talk’ to those involved in this local soap-opera. We have changed the names where applicable to protect the innocent; blah, blah, blah... In short... a member of a local group, lets call him “Clarence”, was accused of getting “Sally”, a girl apparently too young for Clarence to be dealing with, pregnant. and in a strange twist of events, a letter is written and sent to a local night club owner requesting that the group Clarence is

part of be refused from performing there because of this. Now, how and why any of these events have anything to do with each other is beyond me but apparently the presence of this letter is communicated to Clarence and he becomes enraged at the possible negative effects this news on his budding career and takes his anger out, verbally, on the Jill, the daughter of the person he believes wrote and mailed the letter. Jill informs him he is wrong, the mother calls SA Urban and here we are.

It’s all just a little too petty, but not at all surprising. I say all of that, just to say this... It’s just not that serious people! I’m not sure if the rumors are true and I really don’t care. The issue here is that if you plan to move forward in your music career to the point of becoming known nationally or even worldwide, get used to the B.S. There will be much more serious issues you will have to address in the future and the best way to deal with ‘false truths’ is to make the news, don’t let the news make you. Ignore the B.S. if it ain’t true; and most times even if it is. *wink*

During his lifetime, Dr. King sought to forge the common ground on which people from all walks of life could join together to address important community issues. Working alongside individuals of all ages, races and backgrounds, Dr. King encouraged Americans to come together to strengthen communities, alleviate poverty, and acknowledge dignity and respect for all human beings. Service, he realized, was the great equalizer. On January 15, 2007, Americans across the country will celebrate the national holiday honoring the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As they have since 1995, hundreds of thousands of Americans will remember Dr. King by participating in service projects in their communities. Together, they will honor King’s legacy of tolerance, peace, and equality by meeting community needs and making the holiday “A day ON, not a day OFF.” - courtesy of the MLK Day of Service website.

Born in Atlanta into a family of Baptist ministers, Martin Luther King Jr. came to lead and symbolize some of the most important civil rights campaigns in the 1950s

and 1960s.

Articulation the movement for African American civil rights as an essential fulfillment of the spirit and ideals of American democracy, and using Gandhian tactics of nonviolent resistance to minimize bloodshed, King was instrumental in breaking the back of institutionalized racial segregation during those decades and in bringing unprecedented visibility and support to the cause of racial equality. In 1964 King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the youngest person ever to gain the honor; in his acceptance speech he described his work as a “creative battle to end the long night of racial injustice.” Since his assassination in 1968, and with the designation of his birthday as a national holiday, King has assumed a place as one of the most important American leaders of the latter half of the twentieth century. - courtesy of the LIbrary of Congress, U.S. News and World Report Collection.

THE POETRY CORNER MEN artist unknown

Good Men! are indeed all around us. We pass them on the streets, in the malls, and at work. Most we can't see because we don't know what a good man really looks like. He usually isn't flashy enough or rich enough to turn our heads. He might not wear a suit or push a Lexus. He might not have a body like Brad Pitt or a face like Denzel. But, as you mature, you realize it's better to find someone who's got your back rather than someone who turns your head. A good man doesn't agree wholeheartedly with everything you say. He doesn't just tell you what you want to hear and do the opposite. He doesn't declare how sensitive, sweet, caring, sincere, etc. he is (he won't have to because it shows). He has his own opinions and yours may clash, but he doesn't have to degrade you to prove he's right. He even admits at times to being wrong, especially if you are willing to do the same. A good man is not going to meet every item on your checklist. He is human with frailties and faults mixed in with all of his wonderful, strong attributes. He needs your love and respect. He needs to feel that you don't live to catch him doing something wrong so you can declare, "Aha! I knew you were a dog!" A good man isn't insecure about his woman having great achievements. In fact, he is her number one supporter and becomes disappointed with her when she begins to lose herself, especially for the sake of not hurting his feelings, or only wanting to make him happy. His happiness comes with seeing her excel in her dreams and accomplishing her goals. For as she excels and is exalted, a good woman will bring her good man right along with her. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!! A good man doesn't necessarily give you a huge birthday or Valentine's gift. He shows his love in the ways that are comfortable to him. Don't judge him by TV standards. No one is really living a fairy tale. You'll miss out on your own fairy tale by buying into the myth that our men are no good. It's just not true. A good man is a man of his word. He says what he means and means what he says. His word is his bond. He never leaves you wondering if he is going to call or show up - he is dependable. That is right! A good man has a love and a heart for his Higher Power. As his relationship and love with that Higher Power grows so will his relationship and love with and for you grow. (AMEN!!!) Our beautiful men, we salute you, appreciate you and thank you for who you are and all you've done.

local/independent cd review TOP FLYTE G’Z “The South’s Best Kept Secret” Review by SA Urban Review Staff

Man, I actually remember the night at Kristals when this CD was passed to me. I’m not even sure who it was but for some reason I decided to tuck it into my pocket. This was probably about 2 to 3 months ago during one of the G’s Night Out concerts. I actually listened to the CD in my truck a few days later (it took a few days because the presentation didn’t make a big impact on me initially) and to my surprise, I caught myself zoned out on the infectious beats included throughout the project. That being said, lets get to it! As I said, the packaging of this CD had to grow on me at first, because it wasn’t all flashy and photoshop intensive as a lot of the rap/hip-hop CDs are these days but upon further inspection it’s actually quite fitting. The lyrics and beats are clean and pressed for the streets and the packaging reflects that. The entire CD only lists 12 tracks which is definitely a positive, not a reflection of the music but an indicator that they’ve actually put some thought in the project; anything over 15 probably won’t make it to my ears. Take a hint people, if you’re not already a superstar, packing a CD with 20 tracks just ain’t the way to do it but if you just have to, make sure your hottest sh*t is near the front. Audio quality is industry ready and I have to give kudos to Levcon and Terra Nova Studios for great mixing and mastering. These guys have great urban appeal with music and lyrics that seem to be made for each other. I believe Top Flyte G’z will be around for a while if they can carve out a niche for themselves. The only major negative I have have to say about this CD is that I didn’t really figure out they were reppin’ Houston until the very last track. If they’ve said it in their lyrics they arent sayin’ it enough. The mixing and mastering were done in Hollywood, CA and Austin, TX respectively and there’s no real mention of what part of the “South” they are the secret of. At the time of this printing, I tried to contact them through their email address but it was returned as undeliverable because it was an unknown account. If anyone knows how to get in touch with these guys, hit us up at news@sa-urban.com
