Originally postponed due to a “threat of snow” as Chuck D. put it, and censored off the bat on the rescheduled day, Chuck D’s visit to San Antonio seemed to have a negative aura surrounding it from the onset. The SA Urban staff settled into the Laurie Auditorium for a much anticipated “vibe” session with the member of Public Enemy and waited for him to appear. Camera’s were poised while pens and pencils were eager to write. Once Chuck D appeared and began to speak, the negative aura quickly dissipated and the audience settled in for what would later become one of the best “vibe” sessions we’ve seen in a long time, even after finding out Trinity University decided to censor him from Bush-bashing or saying the “F” word (why would they do such a thing? Maaaaan, let Chuck D be Chuck D!. Maybe it was because of the many young impressionable, caucasian minds in the crowd... hmmmm. But that’s just my thoughts...) What it came down to was just a rap session. He was restricted to a 1 hour session and seemed to be rushed but when he finally was able to get into the flow it was a Chuck ‘D’elight to hear. Touching on subjects from cell phones controlling our lives to the definition and history of the word “Cracker”, I felt like I was recon-

necting with my roots and hearing the things my mother/grandmother used to tell and warn me about over the years. After the 1 hour session, he was given time to answer questions from the audience of whom a few seemed to be somewhat versed in the political and governmental aspect of his speaches and writings no matter what color or nationality they were. Whether it was knowledge gained over many years or gained in the immediate fact that he was visiting the school is unknown but either way this was a good thing and showed a bit of promise for a generation about to be thrust into the world of “reality”. Formalities out of the way and taken care of, the feeding frenzy begins as Chuck finished his sessions and the crowd converges on him prematurely. His host quickly takes control and informs everyone that she will be excorting him to a place where everyone can “meet and greet” with him; unfortunately, a chair in the hall was no better; on a chair in the hall. It had cookies and lemonade though so I guess that helps some. Chuck actually hung out with the people signing autographs and posing for pictures into the night and agreed to sit in to one of the Universitiy radio personality’s shows. Overall, the visit was informative and entertaining. Chuck is a down-to-earth cat with his own opinions and isn’t afraid to speak his mind. A true black leader for a generation without one. Chuck D, SA Urban’s got your back 100%

the sa-ttown urban street pulse LIL’ AUBREY (Young King Of The Mic)

naz, Lil’ Aubrey has collaborated with New York based rapper Katastrophy, Varcity Squad, and Cacalacky just to name a few.

Lil' Aubrey a.k.a. Yung King Of The Mic, in his own words, has to be one of the most talented and underrated lyricists in San Antonio.

Lil' Aubrey is slowly but surely getting the credit he deserves for all his hard work in this music industry.

Coming from a very musical background, his great grandmother Dorothy Sweat Warren inspired him; for she was a great gospel singer that was well known in many churches and on the radio airwaves in Virgina and San Antonio, Texas.

He is currently unsigned and will be dropping his first solo project entitled UNSIGNED HYPE.

She sung at the Appollo Theathre, and Carnike Hall in New York.

Be on the lookout for Lil’ Aubrey performing at many local and regional shows in San Antonio and the surrounding areas.

SAN ANTONIO'S HIP HOP SAVIOR SAN ANTONIO'S HIP HOP SAVIOR: CAN JAI MIKE DO IT? By Sherril Metal, Club ENVY / Urban Metal

San Antonio's Hip Hop scene has been struggling for quite some time to make a come up. I have personally watched it and been involved in it for 4 years now. There always seems to be something missing from the equation. There are damn good artists here, good performers, decent promoters and venues, a sometimes sketchy audience, but there is always something missing. A feel, a look, a greatness, a sound, a trust... it's something that we haven't been able to put a finger on. Till now.

The Streets Are Soaking In It...

"A BRAND NEW R & B SOUND, WITH A HINT OF HIP HOP, 2 CUPS OF EMOTION, SIMMERED IN DA HOOD, WITH DA DIRTY SOUTH SPRINKLED ALL OVA IT!" Now add this to the mix... a six foot two, two-hundred plus pound, Rican and Black mix Sagittarius... that is wet dream material right there for his female fans. And for the male fans... oh he has something for you too. The kind of RnB, Hip Hop, ultra sexy music that will put your girl in the mood every time. Don't believe me? Go listen to his joints while you finish reading what I am telling you. http://www.myspace.com/jaimike or http://www.jaimike.com/main.htm Meet 28 year old Jai Mike (pronounced Jay Mike). Born in Abilene Texas, he visited San Antonio with his family when he was twelve years old, and, has kept coming back ever since. In fact, he lives here now, and strongly considers SA-town his home. He is a man with high expectations for himself, but oddly enough, fame and fortune are not the driving forces in his life. "I just wanna make every average kid realize that he can make it. I am no silver spoon baby, I am just a big country boy." A big country boy being courted by Def Jam. Right before the "Big Freeze of 2007" Jai Mike was on his way home from a weeks stay in Houston where he was meeting

people and handing out CD's, doing what artists do when they are on the grind. Cell rings, he answers, it's Def Jam, they talk for a minute and they schedule a phone meeting for the next day. Jai Mike calls, a deal was offered: Baby Boi Records to become Baby Boi / Def Jam. A dream come true? "This doesn't come without a huge hustle, the biggest yet." Jai Mike says. The artist has ninety days to prove himself and his marketing capabilities to Def Jam. Can he do it? "As humbly as I can put it, this is my time. I realize this and I have to embrace it." And embracing it means throwing out the negativity and staying positive, something Jai Mike struggles with. "I represent a regular country boy from a town of 60 thousand. My own mother even said I wouldn't make it." But with an inner belief, he knew that she and everyone else was wrong. He felt something bigger within himself and he just tried to prepare for it. "You have to make yourself." Jai Mike was Eliza Doolittled by a Dominican man named Joel Contreras. For three hundred days Contreras took Jai Mike under his wing teaching him good manners, what's what with formal table settings, how to handle himself politely, proper speech, humility, respect... everything. Jai Mike went from a ruff neck to a gentleman. "Joel was more of a father to me in three hundred days than my own father was my whole life. I owe him so much."

Lil' Aubrey has been rappin’ since he was 9 years old and puttin it on cd since he was 12. He was one of the founders and performers of the group ‘HeadTurnaz’ which consist of Lil' Aubrey, Sir Qpid, Lil' Dee XCess and Da Bachelor. At the age of 18 he is at the top of his game and striving for a higher plateau. Other than working with HeadTur-

We have talent down here and we have promoters down here over charging them. It shounldn't cost an artist $100 just to perform. Sure, you get paid but that doesn't get people to come to your shows. Its our job as promoters to go out almost every day and promote; downtown is not off limits.

At a recent concert here in SA Town( Club Kristal) Houston, Texas rap artist Lil' Flip Graced the stage and rubbed elbows with local personalities. Pictured above is Lil' Flip and David Sterling. Also lending their star power to the night were these lovely ladies who came out to make sure Power 106.7 was well represented at Club Kristal. Shout Outs To Tino Cochino for puttin us on with his Peeps.

It doesnt make sense the we are one of the biggest places people come to visit and our shows are not drawing the crowds they’re supposed to. The other thing is that it’s not just “a black thang”; all colors love hip-hop too. You won’t get the crowds you’re looking for if we dont include all of them. Now! For the artists that are the first to perform and leave right after your show, your not right. San Antonio has not made it big yet. Sure people know about us but what they

Stay at the whole show, have some CD's, and most of all rep your city with pride. Thats the only way we will get somewhere. If we don't we’ll get passed up after this year. If we unite we will rise, if we dont we will get lost in the crowd. It took Houston ten years to make it and the only way they did that is by working together. I'm not saying be their best friends, I’m jus saying support all your local artists. And promoters, promote. Makin Major Moves will work wit anyone who's serious. Sorry if I upset anyone but the truth has to be told. If your agree keep doing what your doing just dont keep it to yourself. So my final words are we have this year and this year only to show what we’ve got it. Untied we STAND divided WE FALL.

SA URBAN SENDING SHOUTS OUT TO THE BEXAR COUNTY BOYS! DIGGIN THE FLOW!

“UH HUHHN! IT’S TRUE! I SAW IT ON OPRAH!”

SCOTTY SPEAK’S

by J.C. Williams

First, let me start by saying: "I like Oprah!". Every time I get the chance I tune in to see what the big homie is talking about that day.

fun. Ms. Valadez put on a great show with many great designs showcased (right).

LOCAL DESIGNER STITCHES TOGETHER A BUZZ FOR HER CLOTHING LINE. Hey hey Ms. Valadez! Pull ova! Pull ova! We’ve gotta issue you a “fun” citation for havin’ “Way too much pizaaz!” SA Urban had the priveledge to attend the local fashion designer, Jane Valadez’s, show on January 28th at Ruta Maya and we were pleasantly surprized and had a lot of

Somehow suggesting that if it is seen on Oprah it must be true. My apologies to Tommy Hilfiger, but I still won't buy his clothes because someone told me they saw him on Oprah saying he didn't make his clothes for "The N-Word".

After the show, we took some time to do a looking around on Ms. Valadez’s MySpace page and found her personal notes on the hectic ‘behind the scenes’ workings of ‘crunch time’ at your own personal fashion show. Such commitment and love is a wonderful thing.

For whatever reason, affluent AfricanAmericans seem to become members of the white royal family as soon as they become rich, turning their noses up at the Serfs(look it up!). I asked the richest black people I knew; "Why won't affluent black people pool their resources and create financial growth in the black community?" They all said, "Because black people don't stick together!" Don't act like you have never heard this before, or even said the same thing yourself. It's true, we don't. Look at Oprah, a billionaire black woman, won't give another black person a chance to

URBAN WORLD: LONGEVITY ENTERTAINMENT INC. & ARTIST DROE HEFNER Q: What is your Artist name? A: DROE HEFNER Q: What is your Art of Preference? A: Hip Hop, R&B, and Rock Q: Please give a brief explanation of your genre or style. A: My artist does hip hop and reggae. that’s what makes him a ‘start’ in the making. Q: At what age did you start and how long have you been seriously persuing your art? A: I used to be an A&R for two independent labels for 4 years and I guess I started in the entertainment world at the age of 20 years. In March of 2006 I started my company ‘Longevity Entertainment Inc.’ and so far my main artist for the label is Droe Hefner; age 24. Q: Who and what are your inspiration or influence(s)? A: My influences are Sean Combs, Kanye West, Dr. Dre, 50 Cent, 2PAC, Russel Simmons, Ralph Lo and myself. Other inspirations are... not working a 9 to 5 my whole life. I see too many people living their lives like that and after 20 years on the job they still have nothing to sow for it. I’ve been working a 9 to 5 since the age of 15 and I’m

still working at the age of 25. Q: What kind of message or feeling would you like your audience to walk away with after witnessing your art? A: After I get the right opportunity to show the world what I am about, I want them to know they can do anything they want in life, just go after it and keep good people around you. That’s how I got this far in life. Q: Where can we usually find your art performed or displayed on a regular basis? A: Your can see most of what I am up to on my MySpace page (myspace.com/longevityent) or you can check out my artist Droe Hefner’s page (myspace.com/droehefner). Q: Do you have a website? A: No, just the myspace page for right now. Q: How can our readers get in contact with you? A: You can contact me at my email: longevity1981@yahoo.com or on MySpace. Q: Please list some of your upcoming shows and/or performances. A: Right now I have no shows lined up but you can check my Myspace page for updates. I will always update it with shows that my artist is doing. We are currently

Chuck D., Chuck D. What do I have to say about hearing him speak, or should I say in his words “vibe”, which was good. I mean very good.

Do you remember when folks would say "Uh Huhhn... It's true I saw it on Oprah."

The venue, Ruta Maya, seemed to be the perfect location as it is a testement to all forms of art and is a great place just to sit and reflect on things in your life while sipping a latte.

We at SA Urban understand what it means to ‘go for your dream’ and we support any and all ‘dream hunters’ and ‘dream catchers’. Kudos for you Jane Valadez! Let us know when the next show is scheduled and we’ll be there to support!

ABOUT LONGEVITY ENTERTAINMENT INC. & DROE HEFNER

Stand alone! Be remembered!

Lately Oprah has been getting alot of criticism from the Hip-Hop community, for her treatment of some of our favorite artists, such as Ludacris and Ice Cube.

The turnout was great and since this would be my first “actual” fashion show I can only imagine that the next one will be even better.

working on his album. Q: Do you have anything else you would like to comment on or say to our readers? A: Yes. Look out for my mixtape “Longevity Entertainment Inc. Presents: I’m Built 4 This, Vol.1” hosted by G. Child. Email me to get your free copy at longevity1981@yahoo.com or on MySpace. This mixtape is for hip hop/R&B fans as well as for A&Rs. I hand picked all the unsigned artists on this CD and no one pays me to be on the mixtape. I’m doing this for the love and to promote my label and artist. A lot of people are always talking about [we] need to work together but they never do it. Well, I’m doin it so enjoy.

promote their projects on her number one rated talk show. What's up with that?

Winfrey in the 12th or 9th Wards of New Orleans BEFORE Katrina?

Would we rather our children grow up in poverty and stay there? If I'm lucky, an affluent Negro who grew up in the 'hood, is reading this story and saying to himself how he doesn't owe any-one anything.....

Probably not.

You are right, you don't, the problem is when the ashy elbowed Negro makes something of himself you still have your nose in the air. I look at it like this: Many rappers and C.E.O.'s of Hip-Hop record labels came from the 'hood. Some of these guys grew up in areas most of our affluent AfricanAmericans won't go unless there is an injustice that makes national news or a natural disaster. Would you have caught Ms.

People have been looking for hope in the wards and many of our neighborhoods before any hurricane or the ongoing injustices that are still present. Do I sound upset to you? Good because I am. It is 2007 and the rhetoric continues Is it true that we don't stick together, or is that just an excuse not to? To all my beautiful African-Americans in the hood, you can make it, "It's true I've seen it on Oprah!"

I don’t know if it’s because I’m an old school hip-hopper, but Chuck D. spoke and said everything that I’ve thought, and always said to young people of San Antonio. Be yourself and don’t follow the crowd; create your own identity in whatever you do. Dress in what makes you feel comfortable and act the way you want to act. Make your performance your performance and stop copying everyone else’s. Basically don’t dress like the videos if that’s not you, don’t Rap / sing like the videos unless that you and remember only the unique are remembered; like Michael Jackson, Prince, Mary J. Blige, and Muhammad Ali. Think about this; why do you think Kobe told a reporter that Michael Jordan’s his own man, do not compare me to him? Only the best. Stand alone and be remembered.
