THE STATE OF SAN ANTONIO'S MUSIC "SCENE": PT.1

by Sherril Metal (see May ‘07 issue for pt.2)

STAFF Publisher: Scorpion Media of TX, Editor In Chief: Chuck Jones Web Coordinator:

If you are an artist in San Antonio ... then you know the title "The State of SA's Music Scene" is a fecisious one. You may be shaking your head like I am right now, knowing exactly what I mean. If you are an outsider, a clubber or a radio listener, then it's likely you have no clue as to what is going on. 23 hours of interviews in 4 days, loss of voice, wrists hurting from typing, and all I can say is ..... there needs to be a State of Emergency issued to save us. You think not? Read on my friend. I asked several people from all corners of the music scene some questions. It shook me to find that they all were saying the same things. Check this out:

Scorpion Media of Texas

I asked "What is up with SA's music scene?"

Contributing Writers:

Big Stan, a rapper from the group Cold Blooded said: "I dont know. You got people that really hate on each other here and they dont support each other enough. We all trying to do the same thing, we all wanna make it .. we need to support each other."

"You are getting on somthing that those of us who have been on the music scene the longest have known for a long time." Phil Pepin of Tunesmith Studios (www.myspace.com/tunesmithstudio) said. "There is a need here. One of the biggest problems is venues. In Austin they know that the big appeal is music. They call themselves the "Live Music Capital of the World", so there is this whole fence within the community with the business owners ... there is so much more there and Austin is half the size of SA. It (Austin) has a cohesive nature that draws artsit from all over the world. The South By Southwest Convention draws people from all over the world. SA has nothing. There is a scene here, it's just not cohesive." My buddy Jason who works for a major owner of radio stations in America had this to say: "The music scene in SA is missing diversity in the music AND the art form. The majority of emcees are talking/rapping about the same

THE NEW FACE OF TEXAS COMEDY by E. Fox ebfox35@yahoo.com

I was excited and lucky enough to get invited to a friend of mines Party the other night, I was even more excited to find out that a fairly unknown comic by the name of J.West would be preforming at the event.

Daniel Salazar aka DJ Necio (www.myspace.com/djnecio210) said: "I saw a problem with unity. It was every man/group for themselves. However, Nick Trey (www.sarealhiphop.com) and myself came up with 'Squashing the Beef and Uniting the Streets', an organized effort where we are getting groups who were beefin to start working together to make it big here in Sa-Town." The Official Playboy of SA Urban Radio: "I think San Antonio's music scene is missing support most of all amongst the artists, and then with in the local radio!" Dirty Cratez leader Voodoo (www.myspace.com/audioforensicks) had this to say: "I believe that S.A. is a prime location, but the crowd just doesn't continue to come out to the shows. I think what 21Nothing is missing is the normal unity that other cities pull together, it's like we don't have a common goal. In other cities I've lived in, the one thing you get is local unity and love, it just don't go down like that here in the Tonio." So here we have our first recognized issue ... lack of support and unity. How did this happen?

thing and that's one of the major reasons not many in the Hip Hop community are standing out in the crowd. I have heard several rappers/artist here, there is a lot of talent, however I have yet to hear one rapper that has "IT" all together (focus, lyrics, beats, production, charisma and business sense). There are numerous ones (artists) that are just about there, but not all the way yet."

I was very surprised to find a talent like J.west here in Texas. His raw an unfiltered look at life, relationships, religion and family will leave you in stitches. J.West has brought the funny back to Texas. With his quick wit and sharp tongue which borders on a young Eddie Murphy or Richard Pryor is sure to have you rolling in the isles, J.West is definitely one to watch for in the future. Hats off to you sir for a fine job, I hope to see you and more like you in the very near future.

THE MADD CRITIC SPEAKS ON THE 10 WHO’S TOPS IN S.A.?

by The Madd Critic www.myspace.com/thesacritic

All I know is... about a month ago, I heard Lil’ Flip on Power 106.7 talking about this kid, Bugsy. Now I’ve been hearing this kids name for a while but every since Lil’ Flip has come into the picture, his name comes up a lot more. The same way SA Artist, Famous or Lil’ Ken’s name come up due to his affiliation with Chamillionaire. With that being said... how can you make a top 10 SA artist list and not name Bugsy? What about lyricists like Ty-One, SoS.A., and Liveola? I’m not going to be biased and say I’ve never heard of 5’6 and Ched’r, because honestly I have, but #1 in San Antonio? Please!!! If we had to make a list today according to the way things are going, it would not look like this: (TOP 10 ARTIST IN SA ACCORDING TO STR8 SHININ ENT)

sa-urban.com

3

1.) 5'6" AND CHED'R (STR8 SHININ ENT)

2.) BIG RODDY (DAMN DEAL ENT) 3.) KYLEE (3RD DEGREE) 4.) QUESTION 5.) LIL KEN (CHAMILITARY ENT) 6.) TEXAS FINEST 7.) GMC (GET MONEY CLICK) 8.) BIG KIA 9.) 15.5 ENT 10.) POLAR PIMP ENT. OK... Who thinks that’s bullshit? Lets keep it real! Here’s MY list... 1.) MOJOE 2.) QUESTION 3.) FAMOUS OR LIL KEN 4.) BUGSY 5.) MR. KYLE LEE 6.) 15.5 ENTERTAINMENT 7.) LIVEOLA 8.) GET MONEY CLICK 9.) FADE DOGG 10.) TY-ONE

When I think about the top 10 artists in the city, I think about what these artists are bringing to the table! It’s about the quality of the music! Not how many CDs you can hand out! Whether you consider yourself an artist in the 210, a manager, media rep, friend or family member of an artist, or simply a fan, please place your vote on this subject. I’m going to keep score by the comments you leave. Let’s Go...!

SA URBAN SPOTLIGHT: TECH, C.E.O. OF SCRATCH AND SPIN PRODUCTIONS “IT IS WHAT IT IS”. C.E.O. OF SCRATCH AND SPIN PRODUCTIONS SPEAKS ON PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE. Interviewd by Jesus Cosme SA Urban Staff

Just recently, I had the opportunity to chopp it up & do a little Q&A with Tech, C.E.O. and artist of Scratch & Spin Productions. For those of you who haven’t been keepin’ up with us on the INet radio, you can log onto sa-urban.com & request his single “In Da Lone Star State” which has been on our top 10 requested songs for some time now. SAU: Why don’t you introduce yourself to our readers and let them know who you are, where you’re from and what you represent just in case they don’t already know. TECH: My name is Tech, originally from Dallas but now I reside in San Antonio. I also represent Scratch & Spin Productions. Q: So how long have you been in the music business, and how did you get started? A: Actually I started in 2000 as a producer when I was in the Marine Corps. stationed in Maryland and at the time I had a couple of artists on my label, as far as being an

artist it started gettin’ real around ‘05/’06. Q: Who are your musical influences?

A: If the people enjoyed the single, they’re definitely gonna enjoy the CD “It is what it is”. The single’s been getting a lot of good press and there’s definitely more to come with that.

A: I think my biggest influences right now are Ludacris & T.I., & of course Tupac. As far as being a southern artist, there aren’t many artist with the lyrical content out there and I think Ludacris really brings that to the table.

Q: So who else is on the album? anY features?

Q: Cool, cool. Umm... so you have a CD comin’ out soon, tell me about that & what can our readers expect?

Tashina Munoz. A lot of in-house. There’s a couple still in the works so I don’t wanna say too much. There’s gonna be some surprises.

A: The CD was supposed to drop in March but got delayed. It’ll probably end up droppin’ in July or August. This CD is gonna be about “real hip-hop”.

A: We’ve got Big Biz (top billin records), Greg G, a lot of scratch and spin artists like young chase. Don’t wanna get too many to make it seem like it’s all features.

Q: So Scratch and Spin is your production company? A: Yeah, I’m the CEO as well as an artist. I Started in 2000 and signed a couple of artists in the last couple of years like young chase and we’re negotiating to sign a new R&B artist.

It’s gonna be about telling the truth. It’s not gonna be talkin’ aobut 24s or havin’ a cadillac truck; that’s not what we’re about or what I’m about. ; Bein real to the people letting em know where I’m comin from.

Q: I know you have a show coming up… what’s that gonna be like?

Q: So what’s up with “In Do Lone Star State?” Is the CD gonna be on the same level as the single?

A: It’s gonna be crazy.. the title is The Big Fiesta After Party. San Antonio already knows how fiesta is and we’re tryin to give

everyone somewhere to go afterwards. Everybody can jam with DJ nappi and really see some live performances of what San Antonio’s hip hop scene has to offer. Q: So what’s the lineup look like? A: Myself, Young Chase, Greg G from dynamic entertainment, Mike B and Tashina. Also, Tone City, who have a reputation for themselves already. We don’t want to over flow it so we’re not gonna put too many people on it. Q: Do you have any upcoming projects? A: young chase will be releasing his mixtape around May or June so look out for that. Look out for our R&B artist Tashina and look out for Scratch and Spin ‘cause we’re comin. Q: Any shout outs you wanna give? A: Shout out to my man Greg G. He shows me love. He did a lot of beats on my album. And to everyone out there that’s keeping it real. The SA Urban Staff would like to thank TECH and the whole Scratch and Spin Productions team for sitting down with us and letting us know what’s on his mind. Look out for Scratch and Spin! We see good things to come.

SA URBAN EDITOR, JP OATES GETS 15 MINUTES OF FAME WITH J-TWISS JTWISS by JP Oates

I have seen music videos, written about music videos, I have even been to the premier of a music video, but it was certainly to my surprise when I showed up on the set of the J-TWISS video shoot for his new song "I'm So Fly 2007" to get an interview with him and he asked me to BE in the video. If you have never had the opportunity, I can tell you it is more work than it looks. Shooting a video is a long, drawn out process of takes and retakes from every conceivable angel. It took an entire day of filming in Crooke (Cooke) County to get the footage needed for a four minute song. Needless to say, after a long day of shooting, all everyone wanted was some cold beers, a bit of food and relaxation time, deadline or not the interview was gonna have to wait. Luckily I hooked up with my boy J-TWISS the next day and we finally had a chance to just sit down and talk. JP: What's up J-TWISS? Man, I appreciate the hospitality you showed a brother the other day during the video shoot. JTWISS: Man, That's how we do it kin-

folk. JP: So, tell me about yourself. JTW: Well, I'm from a small town called Pearsall, also known as Crooke County. We call it that because even the law is crooked around here, I wrote a track called "Crooke County" a few years ago to explain about the Sheriff getting caught selling drugs, you know, confiscating drugs from dealers and then turning right back around and selling them on the street. I write about all that in my music and that is basically where the whole Crooke County thing came from. JP: That is crazy. So, who do you look up to in this music game? Who do you listen to? JTW: You know I listen to everything in the Dirty South, I like some East Coast stuff too though, like; Nas, Jada-Kiss, The Lox, Styles-P. As far as the South is concerned I used to listen to S.P.M. before he got locked up, I like Lil' Jon, Scrappy and people like that and just try to blend it all together and create a style all my own, you know something the people have never heard before. JP: So, you just finishing up an album right? JTW: Yeah man, I just finished up the Crooke County mix tape. Now we are in pre-production for my new album which is gonna be mainly produced by Big Mike from OFF DA' CHAIN, just tryin' to get the

J-TWISS name out there and let people hear my side of the story you know? JP: How long have you been with OFF DA' CHAIN? JTW: Well, I started with O.D.C about four years ago man, But I was more about my hustle than rap so I kinda fell off from it, but a cousin of mine heard some stuff that I had done and told me I need to get back to my music, so here I am. JP: Yeah, I like your vocal style, how did that come about? JTW: When I first started, I sounded different, I was basically just reading my words off the page, I wasn't really tryin' to make the people feel what I was saying. Now, I realize if I'm gonna do this for a career I really have to connect with the people and really let them know how I feel and what's going on inside my head and my lyrics. JP: So, who do you have on the new album? Do you have any feature artists? JTW: Yeah man, Spook-G has really been helping me out a lot, from the video shoot to arranging this interview with you and SA Urban. I also have some of my boys from my hometown like Casper and Saint, I also did a track with Tino Cachino from 106.7fm called "The Takeover". The next CD I do I'm gonna have a lot of features, but this time around I just want to really showcase myself. I'm always com-

ing to San Antonio and I got a lot of love for the artist there so hopefully we can all shine together. I'm not tryin' to leave anyone behind, I'm just doing me right now. JP: Alright, tell our readers your myspace address so they can go get a sample of JTWISS. JTW: You can check it out at myspace.com/jtwiss2007. JP: Cool. Man I'm gonna let you get back to handling your business, I appreciate you for taking time out of your busy schedule to sit down with me for a couple of minutes. JTW: Man no problem, I'm gonna get a copy of this interview and put it up on my myspace page. I appreciate all you guys at SA Urban and the good things you are trying to do to bring us local artist to the forefront. JP: There you have it, San Antonio to Pearsall and all points in between. SA Urban has got your back 100% Definitely a very cool experience, big thanks to J-TWISS and the whole OFF DA' CHAIN staff (what's up SpookG, Big Mike and all my new kinfolks out in Pearsall, TX).

when you’ve got so much on ya table but I’m finally gettin a little help and takin a breath when I can. Yeah, I think 106.7 is cool but they were better when they first started... I thought they would do a little better than 98.5 but lately it seems like they’re doin’ the same ol’ thing. I wish they would play more of the old school hip-hop/rap but they just seem to keep playin’ the same ol’ stuff the other stations play. I personally think the hype is gone but that’s my opinion. I listen to Texas beats sometimes but I hear that they charge the artist to play their music... Do you know if that’s true? If it is, that’s pretty f*ck*d up. Business is good, life is chaotic but I’m stable. Can’t complain about too much but I do it anyway. LOL! Keep focused and strong my brotha and stay wit’cha pen and pad. THE RAPID GROWTH OF CHID ABUSE IN OUR CITY FOR OUR CHILDREN

I myself have seen the affect of child abuse and how it is holding a dark future for our children.

How many of you readers have known someone that has been physically or mentally abused as a youth?

If a young girl that had never been shown any kind of love happens to have a child of her own, how is she going to be able to give that child what was never given to her?

by CORE corismopen3@hotmail.com

Better yet, how many of you readers have been subjected to child abuse yourself? Too many. This is a serious issue that is rarely brought up in our local hip hop scene, which, if you think about it, doesn't make sense at all. There are so many songs about struggle and trying to make it out of harsh surroundings to pursue a life of happiness and stability, but the majority of these topics are about drug dealing, being broke, or growing up in a hostile environment.

My point is this, in most cases of death caused by child abuse, the mother and/or fa ther is often uneducated, poor, and most importantly, abused themselves by their parents or close relatives when they were children.

in a world of almost no morals or ethic values whatsoever, All we ever hear or on the radio, or see on T.V. is the same, disrespect to women, which are our creators, and raw sexual explicit material 24/7.

What we fail to realize is that our children are also seeing these things without the knowledge or understanding of what is right and what is wrong. And we are wrong for not voicing our opinions on this epidemic, or not even showing that we care.

Also, most abusive parents are often in their teens when they have their first child, these are kids having kids!

We are the leaders of tomorrow and it's time that we start leading today and put a stop to these atrocities before there is no tomorrow.

As we move on into the future, our youth are becoming worse and being brought up

You can make a difference if you choose to... for our children.

D-RAY THE RAW DOG. “BOSS CITY RECORDS REPRESENTA”

REPRESENTING FOR THE “NOBODIES”, D-RAY COMMANDS RESPECT.

Texas underground rap artist D-RAY started recording in 1998 with his brother "JBLAK" and and partner Antwon; they started a group called "T.A." AKA "Texas Assasins". Struggling with incarceration, the group soon ended without releasing an album. But their single named "T.A. Don't Play" received regular rotation on Killeen, TX station 92.3FM. While in state jail, he used to rock the barbershops and everybody noticed his unique voice and style; the way he put his words together was nice. After his last bid, released in 2003, DRAY came to light and knew exactly what he wanted to do. Make music. In 2004 he completed a group album with Big Ed, a close friend in the hood, called RawDawgs. They sold copies by hand in such cities like, Belton, Killeen, Temple, and Dallas Texas; and also Shelbyville Indiana and Los Angeles California. D-Ray soon began having additional problems with family and decided to make a solo journey. His first solo release "2 Let It Be Known" hit the streets in 2005. It included 16 tracks

of real-life music talking about his pains, trials and tribulations, being poor, losing his Mother and continued speaking on what he would do to "maintain."

At the moment, D-Ray is actively performing at shows all over Texas. Residing in San Antonio, he's got his "mind on his money and his money on his mind."

One thing you notice about D-Ray is his tendency to "speak freely". He doesn't bite his toungue and makes a point to represent for the "nobodies". He knows how to put songs together showing his creativity and versatility.

He's dropped many mixtapes of his own and featured on others With a resume of video features with Lil Rahiem and Dr. Teeth but now with his latest release "During Tha Rain" hot off the press, he's throwing things into high gear; expanding his reach with a new group named "F.U.N." that includes artists such as TClover, D.G., Dubb and J-BLAK. Being his own boss keeps him busy but grindin' is the number one thing for him. He's a hustler. You can catch him and his street team selling CDs at car washes, clubs, mom & pop stores, and the list goes on... Some of his credits include DJ Lates "Wreckless in Texas" hosted by Trae and Chamillionaire, Solo G's Music Mixtape, "Good Bad and Ugly" mixtape and he was featured in Block2Block Magazine. Rise and Shine

Shouts outs to Do it Big, Hombase promotion, H& M Management, Joc, DJ Ghost and 9 Milla, 2 real, Cutter County, and last but not least SA Urban. After February’s article, we’ve seen a little difference. More people bringing CD’s. That’s about it. More people need to support our artists. They work hard to get CD’s done and nobody goes out to see or buy them. This city can be fun again. Go checkout the artist s and you will see. Also, for promoters go to the clubs where people like rock & roll. They will give rap shows a chance they sometimes love it more than us. Its’s time for San Antonio to shine. We need to put SA-town on the map and we have all the talaent to do it. So what’s up, y’all awake yet? San Antonio artists are now doing many shows all over the state thanks to people like Yolanda of H&M Managment and DJ Ghost of Haunted House Entertainment.

The Streets Are Soaking In It...

WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF SPOOK! SPOOKS WORLD!! SPEAK ON IT! by Spook DOC Danger-Us email: codkoops@yahoo.com www.myspace.com/drupzproductions www.myspace.com/docbodega

First I would like to congradulate the artist/producers reppin San Antonio's vast and original music scene: Question, Bugsy, Lil Ken (FAMOUS), Fyngas of Fynga Made Productions, Mojoe and yes.....even Tony Parker! All artist/producers mentioned is either working on a major deal or has been recently been signed. Not to forget myself Spook Doc Danger-us of The Drupz Productions, venturing out for a major production deal. I would like to advise the up and coming local artist to observe the hustle by following positive and progressive efforts foward into the " Music Industry". With that said, I would like to point out an issue that i have with the local spectators and critics of the urban underground here in San Antonio. Shots out to Sa Urban!! In my everyday quest to find out what's hot and new in San Antonio, I picked up an issue of the Sa Urban weekly last month only to be shocked on what the critics have to say about our local "show promoters". Of course you know me from working with other "show promoters" such as Ken Bubble of Bubble Rap Promotions, Official Playboy of Hot Spot events and Sa Urban radio, Dj Ghost of Haunted House Entertainment and G-style Records, Rick Reyes of PKP and so on... To my surprise I ran into an article in the Sa Urban Weekly that definitely caught my attention! The article was titled "SAN ANTONIO...WAKE UP!!", written by Aaron Harrison of Makin Major Moves. I have some questions, what is "Makin Major Moves? Is it a record company? Promotions company? Production company? what?....will someone fill me in? Anyway while reading the article, I find subjects and statements mentioned that were disturbing. Why are local "show promoters" charging the local artist to perform at major events? That question will definitely be answered by yours truly, Spook Doc Danger-Us! Well lil buddy, it worries me to think that your train of thought in the music buisness is a little bit slower than average! To an-

swer your question of ignorant measure, myself as a promoter, producer and artist will have to tell you the truth: THE GAME AIN'T FREE HOMIE!!! REAL TALK!! The dollars asked by the promoters prior to a major event is for promotion of the main act, the local openers, the venue, the dj, the sound equipment, the flyers and whatever loose ends need to be tightened up prior to the show for a successful event. Sorry you didn't know this! I also wanted to point out that, San Antonio is awake homie!! You’re opening title was a bitter example of non-awareness to what is going on in the underground music, promotions, media and production movement. San Antonio is now getting the recognition that we need to be apart of the worlds urban music market. As you can see in my opening statement, there are quite a few artist/producers that are making the noise for our city to deserve that attention. The Sa Urban team is definitely a crucial tool for our success in marketing and promotions because the "media" always keeps a firm ear to the streets, events, and talents. Last but not least, I want to address the local talent here in San Antonio, i might not be from here but iIlive here now and i just want to say that I am impressed by the progress that San Antonio's artist, producers, promoters, and media have made in my few years here! REAL TALK! I will support any and every talent as long as it has a goal, potiential, and the will to network! I do agree with Aaron Harrison on one thing; we do need to stick together, complaining about the order of operations is not how we do it. Supporting each other is how it's done! Spooks Quote: "A dream is only a dream if you don’t believe it can be reality!” Shots out to: chuck, Scotty, Jesus, MaryJane, Official Playboy, Ace Boogie (Beatshop Worldwide), all the artists in San Antonio, Power 106.7, and all local show promoters! Contact “Ya Father” Spook DOC DangerUs @ 210-324-4288. Holla Say-Town! This is our year!
