Protecting pooches

With criminals looking to make a quick buck from the increased dog prices nationwide, pet owners have been warned to take extra precautions to protect their pooches from theft.

Thousands of dogs are stolen from their owners each year in the UK, so experts from Quotezone.co.uk have some pointers to help owners deter dognappers.

Prices for a new pup have stabilised at a higher level than before the pandemic at over £1300, unfortunately making furry friends prime targets for thieves*.

Over 2,000 dogs are subject to theft each year in the UK**, with reports increasing since the pandemic, driven mainly by their increase in value.

There is concern that the cost-ofliving crisis will trigger a new wave of dognapping, with criminals seeing it as a way to make quick cash.

In the Greater London region alone, the Metropolitan Police revealed that 1029 pets were stolen from gardens in the first five months of 2022.*** This was a 662% increase from reports the previous year, with only 135 reported garden thefts.

Dogs are the most commonly owned pet in the UK, and as a nation of dog lovers, 34% of households are at risk of being targeted for their furry companions. ****

Greg Wilson, Founder and CEO of Quotezone.co.uk, said: “Although precautions such as micro-chipping can help reunite pets with their owners, it, unfortunately, doesn’t stop the actual theft. Visible collars with GPS tags may help act as a deterrent but it’s important to review home security and where your pup spends time alone.

“Since lockdown, there has been a significant increase in the price of dogs, making them a lucrative target for criminals.

“However, there are many preventative measures that pet owners can take to reduce the risk of dog theft. We’ve created a list of some suggestions to help improve security and protect your pup.

“No one wants to imagine their pet

being stolen, but the reality is that the crime will only get worse with the cost-ofliving crisis as thieves see an increasing opportunity to make money.”

Quotezone.co.uk has revealed ten tips to help prevent dog theft:

1. Keep pups on the lead

Dogs love nothing more than a bit of freedom out on a walk, but owners eager to avoid harm’s way should keep their pooch on the lead to stop them from wondering too far. With no one around, anyone could capture a free-roaming dog. Investing in a long-line lead is a good idea so pets have more space but are still safe and close by.

2. Practice recall

If owners would rather not keep their dogs on the lead and like letting them engage freely with their new surroundings, teaching them to be highly responsive to recall is vital. Dogs with poor recall are more likely to get lost and targeted by criminals.

3. Take photos

Be sure to take pictures of your dog from all angles to help identify them, should worse come to worst you may need proof to get them back from rescuers and even photos with yourself and the dog, to help confirm ownership.

4. Stick to open spaces

Sticking to open spaces and walking with

NEWS

a friend is highly recommended for dog walkers because it’s safer, and owners can see all around them. Try and avoid areas such as forests and woodlands with less visibility, it’s also more likely that dogs could get lost.

5. Secure home and garden

Unfortunately, many dogs are stolen from their homes and gardens, so pet owners should consider improving their home security where possible with cctv cameras, burglar alarms, motion sensor lighting and joining the local neighbourhood watch scheme. Gardens are a prime spot for dognappers to target, so ensure they have locks and fences that people can’t jump or fit through. Even fitting a bell to the gate, pebble stones around the entrance and additional lights are helpful to alert owners to any potential intruders.

6. Microchip pooch and keep it updated

If a dog is found after being stolen, pet

organisations can read the registration information stored on the microchip to tie registration back to the owner. If a dog is resold after being robbed and an unsuspecting new owner takes it to the vet for a check, they can be reunited. For microchipping to work, information must be updated in the microchip registry. Immediately update contact information such as a phone number and addresses if it changes so the owner and pet can be reunited should they be stolen.

7. Be wary of social media

Be careful of oversharing location tags and your favourite spots for walks on social media channels, especially live posting, it could make you and your pet more vulnerable.

8. Invest in a GPS Tracker collar

GPS dog trackers allow dog owners to monitor their pooches’ location constantly. As long as the tracker remains attached, they can be located in real-

time if they escape, are stolen or run off on a walk.

9. Don’t leave pups alone in public.

Aside from the danger of overheating in the car, leaving dogs in the car is also tempting for thieves. They can quickly smash the window and steal lone pups. Similarly, leaving a pet unattended outside a shop is just as risky.

10. Vary walks

Dognappers can target people they see going on the same walks regularly, so make sure to alternate routes in case suspicious strangers are watching. Be extra cautious of overly friendly people who ask lots of questions about your dog.

You can teach an old dog new tricks!

Experts have revealed the top things dog owners should be doing to keep senior dogs healthy and happy in old age. Keeping them mentally stimulated, tailoring their diet to suit their life stage and adapting their walks are key to a happy and healthy senior dog.

Research of 2,000 UK dog owners, commissioned by Forthglade Natural pet Food found almost half of UK dog owners (43%) believe you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. But, 93 per cent recognise the importance of keeping an old dog mentally stimulated, to keep their brain active.

Celebrity vet Dr James Greenwood and dog behaviourist Caroline Wilkinson have teamed up with Forthglade to reveal the top do’s and don’ts for caring for your older dog including the benefits of teaching your old dog new tricks to help keep senior dogs healthy and happy in their golden years.

Caroline Wilkinson said: “It’s absolutely possible to teach an old dog new tricks, in fact, it’s a great way to keep them mentally stimulated in later life and reduce cognitive decline”.

However, expecting them to run long

distances, drastic changes to their daily routine and high-impact activities are big no-nos for our older canine companions.

Dr James comments; “As a dog ages, it’s important to keep them moving, but be sure to keep it within their own individual capabilities. If stiff joints or mobility problems do start to become an issue, speaking to a vet should always be the first step, as lots can be done to keep older dogs mobile”.

The research also found that 37 per cent of dog owners feel unsure if they should change their dog’s diet as it ages. Dr James continues; ‘“It’s really important to think about what our dogs need at every single step of their life. When they reach about 7 years old, it’s a good idea to change them to a diet that’s natural and complete, that is lower in fat, calories and with the right balance of vitamins and minerals.”

The research follows the launch of Forthglade’s new meals for senior dogs that are tailored to support their needs. The Devon-made recipes include 60%

meats or fish (lamb, turkey, white fish) to offer a lighter fat recipe, plus vitamins, minerals and botanicals to keep senior dogs fitter for longer. Omega 3 is added to help maintain brain function and healthy joints, higher levels of glucosamine and chondroitin which can help support joint and bone health and chicory root extract, a prebiotic that helps older dogs maintain a healthy digestion. The range of wet meals includes grain free and wholegrain recipes, all free from junk or fillers. The right tools for the job

Now, this may come as a surprise to some, but it makes sense the more you think about it, trust

me! You might be thinking that a table is a table, right? A bath is a bath? Well, you couldn’t be further off!

Tables

As the first point of call for a lot of your clients when it comes to their grooms, you’re going to want to ensure that you’ve got the best equipment to demonstrate to your clientele. The correct grooming table is one of the best ways to show this.

First things first, a dog grooming table is easily manoeuvrable and allows you to adjust the height to whatever works best for any particular job. Neat, right? This can help provide the best angle for clipping, brushing or anything else you can think of really!

This doesn’t even include that you can quickly assess a situation if something were to go wrong. More angles mean more accessibility, no matter what.

Often, you’ll find that some leashes and restraints may come with the table. This is because manufacturers will be taking any dog’s health and safety into account. Even due to the surfaces you can explore for extra grip on your furry client’s paws.

The variety of easily cleanable materials is something that you shouldn’t let slide. We understand how frustrating it can be during the cleanup process, and a lot of tables make this as hassle-free as possible.

I know that we often mention this for any product, but it’s important to take note of the size of your fluffy clients. If they vary in size, then bigger may generally be better. If you specialise in smaller breeds then there’s no use having the table with the biggest surface area.

Hydraulic tables can be found to be a little more expensive, however, we still recommend looking at paying a little extra if it’s within your budget. It’s about

TABLES & BATHS
totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk @totalgroomingmagazineuk @TotalGrooming 14

finding that mix between expense and results.

You can even factor your own health into this. What sort of tolls might a cheaper table have on your body? It’s the small details such as these that are key to think about for your grooming business.

Before you invest, ensure that you’ve got the space for your new table and that it meets all of the requirements that you have for your business. Now, onto baths…

Baths

We’re all too familiar with how bad odour can be when it comes to our canine companions. Aside from that, health is a vital part of a dog’s life, and it’s important that the correct bathing options are readily available to your clientele.

Professional dog grooming baths are there to help you wash a pup efficiently and fast. There are a plethora of benefits to consider, so let’s dive in!

Reassuring your clients that keeping their pet clean will not only look after their health, but it will also keep their home tidy, is an important thing to mention for your clientele.

Groomers who offer bathing as an add-on are a must, and this will only bring an increased revenue stream to your business. Healthy skin and a healthy coat should be a part of any dog’s life, so that’s why you should be investing in your business by looking into the best baths for your grooming salon.

If you would like advice on what best bathing service could work best for your business, we recommend exploring your options and reaching out to companies, vet clinics and even other groomers to gain some insider knowledge on what could work for you.

Choosing the right tub consists of considering clean-up time, how good it is for the environment and how much it will be costing you to run.

After speaking with some groomers, we found out that some of the best methods for helping a dog enjoy their

wash are with that all too familiar word… “Treat.” It could never hurt to stock up, especially if you know a fluffy client is on their way who’s not overly fond of a bath! Lastly, something that should accompany any good method of dog bathing is a good dryer! Sounds obvious, but similar to above, there are so many options for you to explore. Take a look at what works best for you, explore your options and really show off to your clientele how amazing their pooch will look after coming to you for their regular appointment!

Smart products

As is when choosing any large appliance or new product for your grooming business, it’s important to consider more than a few aspects of what is right for you when choosing your bath or table.

Size matters

Now, this might not come as a shock to most, but not every dog is the same size! We know for a fact that there are groomers who specialise in small breeds, bigger breeds and often the whole shebang.

Consider the size of the table or bath that works best for you. Naturally, if you’re working with a variety of breeds, bigger might actually be better since you can cover more ground.

Storage

Speaking of the size, you’ll want to ensure that you’ve got the room to accommodate your new bath or table. It’s all well and good investing in the biggest table with all the best features you’ll need, but it’s not so practical if it takes up too much room and you can’t freely get around it when needed!

Think about the space you have available and where these items can be stored when not being used.

Cost

This one mainly focuses on baths. Can you afford the latest tech with all the best new features? Obviously, we want to ensure that everyone can get the best bang for their buck, but only if it’s within their price range!

Consider your budget when looking into investing in new dog grooming gear!

This brings us to our next point…

Eco

One of the most important aspects of any industry, let alone dog grooming, is being eco-friendly, especially in 2023! Luckily, considering the environment is something that we’re seeing more and more of lately and we couldn’t be happier!

However, even making a small change to your bath can have some ecological impacts. Do your research, think about what your clients need and do what’s

best when you combine the two!

Reviews

We can’t stretch this enough when it comes to any product in the dog grooming industry, let alone just tables and baths… Check your reviews before

you buy!

Ask around, see what others in the industry have been working with and, ultimately, decide what’s best for you and your business. Doing the right research can do more than simply benefit your profit.

A little recap…

Tommy, Master GroomerUSA

NY is a high-paced, high-stress environment, much like most grooming shops. Take care of yourself first. Your body and mind matter more than working five, six or seven days a week. Put yourself first and your clients and business will reap the benefits.

Sally Hart - South Africa

Groomers in South Africa have learnt to groom and accommodate clients’ requests and expectations without relying on the latest and most modern time-saving devices. I think the skill they have, to give out neat and stylish grooms, shows that in some cases, we in the UK rely a lot on this equipment and sometimes forget to focus on the basic and fundamental techniques of grooming.

IG: @upyourgroom

Asami Terada - Japan

Speed could be the priority, but many Japanese groomers think there are more important things such as a courteous manner for both dogs and customers, detailed explanations for clients, thorough treatments, politeness to clients and careful cutting.

Diana Paiva - Brazil

I strongly believe that they [UK groomers] could get to know a better way to finish the grooming with shears, always valuing the dogs’ body structure and their own beauty. I have an online course where I show how to do a cute face, the Chanel Cut, with focus on the technique details. I also teach some of my techniques on Instagram and will be starting a YouTube channel soon, too. Another thing is the “updo” and the treatment for different types of dog coat such as hydration, nutrition and reconstruction. All of that

Generally, I always say that every groomer needs to practice high levels of patience; both on the learning curve, as grooming has endless capabilities, and on the level of dealing with animals. If you cannot be patient, grooming may not work well for you on the long term. Also, as an important note; never compromise on the quality of the products and the hygiene levels. Sadly, I have seen many use cheap products to increase their profit margin, resulting in skin defects and hair loss.

Meghan-Leigh SmithCanada

I think perhaps not grooming to ‘pawfection’, but to the pet owners’ version of ‘paw-fection’ always suffices in order to keep up with the number of bookings and demand for grooming.

I love making my clients (dogs and humans) feel special every time they come in for an appointment. I have an open-door policy, no hidden rooms. All the dogs are happy, and enjoying a true spa day.

Everyone leaves with an accessory and a polaroid photo, which I think makes it a special experience that they don’t necessarily get from other grooming salons.

Being CPD approved can have a massive impact on your grooming business. Find out more over the next few pages. Photo by Scott Graham on Unsplash
Professional Development

What is CPD?

You may have heard that it’s good to look into a CPD-approved course, but what does that mean exactly? Here are five simple questions and answers that you should know about CPD.

What does CPD mean?

CPD stands for continuing professional development and essentially consists of developing and keeping knowledge, skills and experience that one might gain as they work. You may find that CPD encourages going above and beyond your training, providing some essential guidelines that can really help you to progress through the dog grooming field.

CPD courses vary quite a bit, ranging from sitting in formal education centres to attending workshops and seminars. Overall, you can search for what is best for yourself and your business. We encourage searching around and seeing what’s out there!

What does being CPD certified mean?

If you attend a CPD-certified training course, it means that you have reached

a certain standard that many may not possess in the field. Overall, if you’re CPD-certified, you would have finished a course and are putting your skills to good use!

Is CPD a qualification?

Researching the topic of CPD, it has been said that CPD is not, in fact, a qualification, as the learning style can vary to a degree. That shouldn’t sway you away, however, as it is internationally recognised as being something incredibly valuable in the industry. Overall, wouldn’t you want to have something else that you can add to your skills list to show your clients that you’re the best of the best? You’ll find that the skills you develop do nothing aside from aiding you in your dog grooming journey.

Is CPD certification recognised in the UK?

A CPD certification is recognised in the UK. But, the fun doesn’t stop there, however! You’ll be able to share your skills far and wide with internationally recognised CPD qualifications. Be sure to check online to see a list of where they are recognised!

Are CPD courses legitimate?

The simple answer is yes. An accredited CPD course is recognised, and is something that you should absolutely include on your grooming CV!

With a wide range of people who are looking to CPD courses all around, it’s really showing signs that it could do nothing but benefit your business if you are looking for something a little extra for your clientele.

Extra curricular

Now, we understand just as much as the next person how these daunting business-minded phrases can be. However, that’s why we’re here to help introduce you to the concept of CPD. Let’s dive in…

So, we’ve had a brief look at what CPD is and what it can mean for your business in our essential five. Now, let’s really take a closer look to examine CPD and how it can have a positive effect on your dog grooming business.

CPD stands for continuing professional development and ultimately involves developing yourselves to further expand your skill set and knowledge as you work. Think of it as an apprenticeship almost, but more advanced.

This will encourage you to expand out of your comfort zone, as well as provide some guidelines that will help you explore this fantastic industry [dog

grooming] further. As mentioned in our essential five, this can range from talks to mentoring, to first-hand experience doing what you love with your canine companions.

If you’re an educator in the dog grooming industry, you understand how important it is to stand out from the crowd. If your training is CPD certified, this can mean that it has achieved some higher standards. Any people who take part in CPD-certified activities will have, by definition, completed a CPD course.

CPD-accredited content has been noticed for its relevance and quality within the industry. This will assure people that the benefits included will really be applicable to an individual’s work.

If you commit to learning in a CPD course, the results and return can be incredibly high for a business so we suggest taking a look where you can!

Technically, CPD isn’t a qualification as it’s a slightly different learning style than what would normally be applicable, however, it’s still seen as something that is highly invaluable within the industry.

Long story short, you won’t receive a qualification but you’ll receive skills that would be recognised in a vastly different

CPD totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk @totalgroomingmagazineuk @TotalGrooming 28

way, boosting your career drastically, if done right.

Adding CPD to a list of your achievements as a groomer is something that shouldn’t be looked past. It shows that you’re dedicated to going above and beyond, even if there technically isn’t a qualification to go alongside it all. Plus, it shows that you really know your stuff!

One thing to note, however, is that CPD points can exist. These aren’t quite UCAS points, however, they are still something to note down as some employers may require a set annual amount. We recommend keeping track simply for personal development, too!

Speaking of employers, some may keep an eye out for CPD when hiring! No matter what sector of the dog grooming industry you’re in, you’ll want to appear your best. We don’t see a downside!

CPD courses are generally recognised as legitimate, certified achievements. This will essentially leave a huge “stamp of approval” on your portfolio.

Overall, take away that CPD accreditation is something invaluable to add to any training course, and it will demonstrate that you carry a lot of experience in the field. It shows that learners can really achieve their personal goals.

CPD accreditation can really help you become a trusted education provider if that’s the route you’re going down.

It’s not uncommon to see someone create their own training course, and you’ll see many jumping on the same train to expand what they can offer the grooming industry.

CPD can massively help certain educators stand out amongst the crowd. It demonstrates an added layer to add something extra, so you know that you’re really getting the best of what’s available to you.

There are a fraction of the educators who create their own courses who truly know what it means to provide excellence in the industry, so ensure that you keep an eye out for them.

There are standards set to support educators who strive for excellence, so having an accredited mark will absolutely help you to communicate with your fellow groomers that you’ve made your mark.

CPD Accreditation is for educators who strive to deliver world-class training and enhance their professional field. If you offer a CPD Accredited course, you can demonstrate your commitment to wanting to better the future of the grooming industry, as an educator.

One thing that’s not been mentioned is that it’s a fantastic way to network! Being accredited opens the door to hundreds of professionals who are all striving for the same goals - to help better our industry and to see it thrive.

Naturally, it always comes down to this hard part… Can you afford to invest in being CPD accredited? It honestly does depend o the type of learning that you commit yourself to, the types of which we mentioned earlier. Luckily for you though, there may be payment plans available to suit your needs. The best advice that we can give is to do your research and see what the best fit for you is.

So, how long does being accredited last? Well, it can range, depending on how you choose to proceed with everything. With the CPD Standards Office, for example, membership is for a minimum of two years. This can then roll on, depending on what you choose to do from then on out.

Overall, we want to stretch that there are simply so many benefits to getting yourself CPD certified. If you’re an educator with your own course, it simply makes sense to boost yourself in this fantastic, ever-growing industry.

Whether you’re looking to get yourself CPD certified or not, you can never learn enough about the industry you’re in and CPD certifications are a part of that. Do some research and hey, who knows? You might just find yourself searching for the next best thing in your grooming career!

Naturally…

In recent years within the dog grooming industry, there has been an increase in natural pet products and remedies. This is seen as a plus, so let’s explore why…

More and more companies, groomers and individual brands are exploring the options that come with healthier, sustainable solutions to use when it comes to pet care.

The benefits of using natural products are almost unmatched in some sectors, so it might not be a bad thing if you were to invest in some for your grooming business!

Using natural products can promote effective skin and coat care, a mustknow for groomers and pet owners alike! Silicones may provide artificial smoothness to a hair follicle, however, this may be stripping natural oils from a coat and we don’t want that.

Instead, take a look at products that might derive from natural substances, coconut oil for example. When natural ingredients are used in products correctly, you’ll find that they are a much better alternative to the more unnatural products that you may find. Natural options provide conditioning properties that will greatly enhance a dog’s coat.

Aside from the hair itself, skin irritation is something else that can get in the way of having a happy pup. On the daily, dogs are exposed to so many irritants to their skin, whether they are cleaning products or even simply living in a polluted area. Chemical-based products add to this, only causing more harm in the long run. This can lead to long-term

skin conditions.

By switching to natural, a dog may be exposed to less toxic chemicals every day. Consider using natural dog shampoos and your clients will be grateful! Don’t forget that using a natural conditioner alongside will help hydrate and repair some damage.

Whilst a dog is being bathed, their skin is exposed to ingredients that they are soaking in. Similarly to how good things are absorbed into the skin, bad things are just as easily and this could lead to some long-lasting health issues that your clients simply won’t want for their fluffy friends.

We can’t emphasise the importance of using non-toxic shampoos and

NATURAL DOG GROOMING

conditioners enough. This will leave your clients at ease that their furry pals will be safe and healthy for the foreseeable future. Especially when considering that some dogs are known to eat a lot of things they shouldn’t!

Similarly to humans, a dog’s skin has one of the biggest jobs in the human body, being a barrier to all of the nasty things outside of it and keeping them out! That being said, it’s important to not use any chemical-based products that can cause harm to the skin. A dog’s natural immune system is essentially boosted when using more natural products.

Now, this next point is somewhat of a no-brainer to most (we hope) but it still needs to be talked about. Animal testing is no joke, and there are still so many products that are tested on our friends that are extremely harmful. Some brands, such as Doglyness, commit to crueltyfree products and you can rest easy knowing that the products that you use don’t harm any animals. Always do your research before buying!

Speaking of friendliness, being ecofriendly is also something that should be taken into consideration when looking at what you’re putting on your canine companions!

Luckily, we’re finding that a lot more people in 2023 are looking to be more ecologically friendly and are doing their part for the greater good of Mother Earth. Using natural dog products also play a huge part in this, as there are so many benefits to the environment such as not washing away toxic chemicals down the drain whenever you bathe a dog.

Lastly, think of your clients. The impact that this can have on their pets is incomparable to so many things. Even simply letting them know of a way that they can be using more natural products can have such a huge impact on so many lives. Even just talking them through your products and process.

Word of mouth is a strong thing, after all. They may explain the importance to their fellow dog owners and, you may even get some new clientele out of it!

Ultimately, it’s crucial that you really do take some time to research the products that you’re using. If you’re environmentally conscious, then that’s amazing! Please keep going. If you’re looking to be better at animal skincare

then that too, is a fantastic mindset to have. We can’t stretch the importance of these factors enough, and we hope that

Harvey’s Dog Grooming Salon

John Hollinrake, 52, own’s Harvey’s Dog Grooming Salon in Carnforth, Lancashire and tells us all about how he built the fantastic grooming business.

Can you please introduce yourself?

After working as an analyst for a bank for almost 25 years, and whilst recovering from a serious illness, I was made redundant. I decided a change of career was needed and my wife encouraged me to retrain to be a dog grooming professional.

It was a totally new experience and

a great summer was spent at Canine Groom School in Gisburn where I was trained and gained my qualifications. I never thought after a quarter of a century in an office job that I’d then be grooming dogs for a living, but here I am!

What can you tell me about Harvey’s?

The salon is named after my handsome

golden cocker spaniel Harvey who is sadly no longer with us. However, I chose his name for my salon so, that way he’s still with me!

Although a lot of my clients call me Harvey, I don’t even bother correcting them now, it’s become my stage name. We opened by renting a space at a local dog boarding kennel, but unfortunately, that didn’t really work out.

GROOMERS OF THE MONTH
totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk @totalgroomingmagazineuk @TotalGrooming 38

I wasn’t getting the level of customers that I should have been, plus there were issues with their opening and closing times.

I decided I needed to leave there and took a leap by renting a high street shop that had become available nearby. My salon is directly opposite the newsagents my parents ran back in the mid-1970s!

I’ve always loved Carnforth so I’m super happy to be back. I took over the lease on my salon in December 2021, and it’s been really busy ever since!

What’s your USP, how does it work and how does it affect business?

I’m the only dog grooming salon in the area that also provides teeth cleaning services. I use Emmi-pet, it’s been a really great product to add on, and I have dozens of dental clients now.

I find the initial session is the one with the ‘wow-factor’ and then they go and tell their friends and family, and it spirals from there.

I also now have a sprinkling of cat clients too. It started off with a dear old lady who couldn’t travel and she asked me if I would collect her cat, brush her through, and then take her back. I agreed and didn’t charge her very much, but word has started to get around and now I’m getting a few queries from potential cat clients.

Although I do tell them I’m not a certified cat groomer, I still take them on. I guess the other thing is I’m able to handle the really big dogs too, and I’m just as happy lifting a 50kg Shepherd into the bath as I am a 5kg Chihuahua.

How has your business grown over the years and where do you see yourself going?

From starting off, to running my busy high street salon and being full for weeks in advance, I’m now looking into how to take the next step up. I’m considering taking an apprentice on, or a dedicated bather, allowing me to see more clients in a day and keep the waiting list down to a manageable level.

The last thing I want is to be turning customers away, I want them all myself! Having a bather would allow that to happen. After that, a second bath and table and a second groomer, allowing me to actually take some time off - that

would be nice!

Am I too old to open a second salon after that? Maybe, but my ultimate plan is to have a couple of salons run for me by staff while I take a step back. That’s the longer-term plan anyway.

What advice would you like to give to our readers, if any, about the grooming industry?

The best advice I could give is to value yourself. Know your worth. Don’t undersell yourself. You provide a great service to a large market, and people need you. Solve their problem and charge a good fee, that way you’ll appreciate what you do even though it’s very hard physically and mentally draining work sometimes, and you’ll keep coming back for more. If you are

cheap, it’s a chore. Also, always be looking for ways to improve your groom, and invest in good equipment always!

Any general thoughts you’d like to share?

I just like to think that you are never too old or never of the wrong skillset to retrain to become a grooming professional. There are good training schools around, so if you are thinking of a change of direction or looking for the vocation for you, go for it! You’ll learn a skill and trade that can carry you through life, plus working with dogs is always better than working with people.

Tennis balls

For many of our dogs, a walk just isn’t the same without their treasured tennis ball, and we all have seen the tremendous lengths that some dogs will go to retrieve a ball, leaping into the air, or even jumping headfirst into the water. But, what many of us won’t know is that your dog’s tennis ball can actually save their life, so I’m sharing a top tip, that every dog owner should know.

Alot of dogs love tennis balls, and whether you throw one for them to chase, or they like to carry it in their mouth for the walk, the brightly coloured items are a staple part of life with a canine companion.

Canine First Aid is far from just the basics of CPR and choking first aid, some techniques are bordering on genius.

This is an injury I have had experience with working in Veterinary Practice and is more common than you think.

If a dog lands on a fence post or a sharp broken branch it can damage the brachial artery which runs through the armpit. Like humans, it’s a difficult place to a tourniquet, so the best action is to apply pressure immediately using your fist, hands, and fingers.

Your dog’s tennis ball is a great object to use to help reduce blood loss. If a ball is squeezed in the armpit, it compresses

the brachial artery, stopping the blood flow.

Jam it in the armpit and keep it there as hard as possible until you get to the vet. It may just reduce blood loss enough for the dog to recover, and save their life.

And if you have a dog that loves to fetch, it is also very useful to know how to deal with a stick injury.

This can happen occasionally and can occur when the dog bites the tongue or bites down on a sharp stick, which should be avoided.

It usually looks worse than it is and after a few minutes, it can stop. Saliva contains proteins which play a role in the different stages of wound healing. Saliva contains substantial amounts of tissue factor, which dramatically accelerates blood clotting.

If the injury is minor but doesn’t clot quickly and stop bleeding then do call the vet as there could be a clotting issue.

If the tongue is split then a veterinary visit will be necessary as they often need stitching.

The most serious tongue injury is when the lingual artery is severed, usually by a stick injury or similar.

This can be life-threatening owing to severe blood loss.

Five reasons cat grooming is for you

Adding cat grooming to your offer is not only rewarding, but it is building on your existing skills, and with an iPET Network Cat Grooming Qualification, you will leave with the bespoke skills you need too. In this latest cat grooming column, iPET Network tutor, and skilled cat groomer Katie Gwilt, explains why this is the career move for you...

Network.

We are heading for summer, and the lovely bank holidays which give many of us a little bit of time off, to reflect on a few things.

For some of us, it might be ways that we could enhance or expand our business offer.

Welcome to the wonderful world of cat grooming! I trained as a cat exclusive groomer in 2020 and haven’t looked back. I have always been an animal lover in general, but grew up with cats and always had a special bond with them over all other species.

It’s been amazing to realise my dream and make working with felines my fulltime profession. I know most readers are exclusively dog groomers, but have you given any thought to working with cats as well? Or even just cats? Here are 5 reasons cat grooming could be for you.

High demand for services

According to Cats and their Stats in 2021, there were a reported 10.8 million pet cats in the UK with 26% of households owning at least one feline. Now have a think about how many cat groomers you know and it doesn’t take a genius to do the maths. There are so many cats out there just waiting to be helped by you. Many long-haired cats need a hand with their grooming as well as older and sick cats with short hair too. I have four shorthaired cats and you should see the fur I regularly brush off them! Mats form very quickly on cats with dense fur and they only have their tongue to look after their coat so any help a trained professional can give can make such a positive impact on their life, health and well-being.

FELINE FOCUS
totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk @totalgroomingmagazineuk @TotalGrooming 42
Sultan showing you how relaxing a good groom can feel Working with rescue cats like Lucy who has very poor health can be extra rewarding

Cat grooming is becoming more popular

There are not just literally millions of pet cats in the UK, their humans are starting to hear more and more about cat grooming and are looking to find these services. Many vets will do sedated shave downs for health reasons, but many don’t have the time, resources or training to be able to do regular grooming (rightly so, their focus is always health). Many cats need regular maintenance grooming just like dogs and you could be the person to provide such a service. People specifically trained in cat grooming are still very hard to find and worth their weight in gold to many cat owners.

A chance to learn a new skill set

Cats are definitely not small dogs. Working with cats you will need to learn a whole new set of behaviour and body language signals as well as additional techniques and handling skills. Cats’ skin is thinner than that of dogs too (0.42mm in cats depending on the breed versus 0.5-5mm in dogs) and so they have different requirements and not all the same products are suitable for both species. This is a pretty exciting prospect if you are looking to change things up a bit and broaden your skills in general. Some skills will definitely cross over, but it’s like a whole new world out there…

Making a differencepositive in a cat’s life

Cats can be very misunderstood and it takes a little time to learn to read their signals. When you do though you really start to see the difference grooming can make to their life. Often it is after you leave and they are relaxing in their home again that their owners really start to appreciate the positive changes. Seeing a very matted cat be able to go back to being able to get into all those amazing yoga positions again after removing the mats is one of my favourite things ever. Once they are freed from the mats, ingrown claws, dirty bottoms or mucky ears they are happier and can go back to showing kitten-like behaviour again. They often play more, enjoy being stroked again are generally more sociable as a result of feeling more comfortable in themselves. I work a lot with a couple of local cat rescue centres as well where I can make a real difference in the welfare

FELINE FOCUS totalgroomingmagazine.co.uk @totalgroomingmagazineuk @TotalGrooming 44

of the cats and also help them look and feel their best to better their chances of being adopted.

Cats are fascinating animals

Cats are all so completely unique and it’s not until you start working and living with cats that you really start to appreciate this. My four are two sets of brother and sister littermates with 10 years between them and all act completely differently and have very unique personalities. I love this about cats so taking the time to work with cats on an individual level and finding out what works for each specific cat on that day is one of my favourite parts of the job. They can be quite quick to change their minds so you need to keep on your toes, but again I love this about cats and they always let you know exactly how they are feeling. Having a cat purr during their groom and give you head bumps is just wonderful, the same as slowly starting to gain the trust of a timid or nervous cat. Knowing I have done something to help a cat is my motivation to go to work every day and I love constantly learning and studying felines in an effort to better understand them.
